SPRING PROJECTS AND REMINDERS: “April Showers Bring May Flowers . .” They also bring warmer temperatures, pollen, weeds, and the season to get outside and do Spring Cleaning projects. Your Property Management team is working in coordination with the Board of Directors and Committee Volunteers to prepare common areas and amenities for Spring and Summer Activities. Pressure Washing of Pool and Tennis facilities will be completed along with the wooden fencing and other common areas. Summer flowers and pine straw will be installed before Memorial Day. We want Hamilton Mill to look its very best for you and your guests. Residents are reminded that Spring is also time for exterior home and landscape maintenance. Common notices for violations of the guidelines include: • Weed Control (Pre and Post Emergent Treatment) • Mow and Edge Your Lawn and Properly dispose of grass clippings and yard debris. Do not blow clippings into the storm gutters. • Mailbox Maintenance – Please keep your mailbox clean and the approved numbers on both sides. See page 4 for helpful information. • Modification Requests – Exterior changes to your home and property requires approval by the modification committee. Making changes without submitting a Modification Request Form and receiving approval may result in fines and suspension of amenity use. Spring is also a time to make sure your amenity access card is working and that members of your household have an amenity card. Cards are issued to residents in good standing with the Association and must be shown when asked by property management, amenity monitors, lifeguards, and Gwinnett County Police. This policy is intended to protect the association against liability from use of common areas by non-residents. IMPORTANT REMINDER REGARDING GRADUATION BANNERS: The Board of Directors voted to limit Graduation Banners to only be placed on your property from May 1st to May 31st, and be no larger than 4 sq. feet. Banners are not permitted to be placed on common areas including neighborhood entrances. Signs placed on common areas will be removed by Property Management and will be held at the Lakeview Clubhouse for pickup. Let us know how we can help with your Spring cleaning projects. Thank you, Gaye Cantrell, On-Site Manager for Hamilton Mill Hamilton Mill Community Association, Inc.

DUELING PIANOS The famous Andrew Brothers were back for Dueling Pianos at the Lakeview Clubhouse on Saturday night, February 17. This show sold out (again) overnight! Groups of friends shared tables, food, and drinks as they listened to 3 solid hours of comedic pianists Damian and Mark go back and forth with requests straight from the audience. The night started out with a little Ray Charles “What’d I Say” to get the crowd warmed up. We had some 80’s rock classic requests (ladies, you remember “Pour Some Sugar On Me”), 90’s rap and boy band requests, some deep track Toto requests, and of course some “Sweet Caroline” that got the entire crowd singing. We had a request for “God Bless America” to pay tribute to the Florida school shooting victims and their families. There were a few sports rivalries as song requests (and tips) went back and forth between Georgia and Tennessee, but Georgia ended up winning the battle with $100 down on “Georgia on my Mind”. “Sweet Home Alabama” was a big hit (and we had a few a “Roll Tides” that were not interrupted!). By the end of the night, everyone was dancing and singing along to the well-known piano bar classic, “Piano Man” by Billy Joel, and had a great time interacting with the Andrew Brothers. Thanks to everyone that came out and made this event an awesome one!

TENNIS NEWS
TENNIS NEWS
from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis Welcome to April! It is the 5 letter word that makes everyone get out and play tennis. There is a 4 letter word from this month that all tennis players can do without - RAIN! Good luck if you have to reschedule your match. Singles is not as difficult to reschedule because there are only 2 players but getting 4 players to agree on another date is another thing. With Easter and Spring Break being the same week, it should be easier to reschedule those matches for that week. The busy spring ALTA league will end at the end of April. The playoffs will start the following week. As usual there will be plenty of teams from Hamilton Mill that will make the playoffs. With all the flex leagues, social play and league matches, there is a match going on every day on the courts during April. Tennis is big in Hamilton Mill, and it shows it with all the players using the courts. SUMMER LEAGUE DEADLINES Remember these deadlines are to play in the league for that season. If you want a chance to be picked for a team, you must sign the online book on the hmill.com website. Please sign the book at least 14 days prior to the league deadline date. ALTA–Summer League ALTA mixed doubles - deadline April 9th starting Saturday, June 2nd @ 9:00am. ALTA senior women - deadline April 9th starting Thursday, May 31st @ 6:30pm. ALTA senior men - deadline April 9th starting Friday, June 1st @ 6:30pm. USTA–Summer League USTA Thursday women - deadline April 26th starting Thursday, May 17th @ 9am. USTA Sunday women - deadline April 26th starting Sunday, June 3rd @ 12 noon. USTA Men - deadline April 26th starting Sunday, June 3rd @ 4pm. USTA junior league - deadline April 11th starting, May 12 (girls at 1 and boys at 3). LADIES’ TOURNAMENT AND ALTA CAMP Did you miss the tennis events in March? Stay in touch with Hamilton Mill Tennis with our weekly newsletter. The Hamilton Mill Adult Ladies’ Tournament/Lunch was held on February 23rd. All 32 ladies battled in a round robin format making it a success! Congratulations to the winners Michelle Ashwood / Julie Crawford and April Crowe / Ceci Engstrom. The following weekend was the ALTA 3-day camp. We had rain the first day, but the weather broke for Friday and Saturday. It was good to see the guys come out Saturday. Thank you to all who participated in both events!

JUNIOR USTA LEAGUE (WE ONLY NEED 4 PLAYERS TO MAKE A TEAM.) This is great! We are very excited about the new format and hope that it will make it easier for Hamilton Mill to put together teams for this summer. We are in the process of collecting Juniors who are interested in league tennis. The league is for 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u and 18u beginner and intermediate. The 8u will use the 36ft court and 10u will use the 60ft court. The deadline to submit the team is on April 6th. Before that deadline can be created, we must have at least 4 players plus a team parent (that has been approved by the USTA). Email the shop the name of your child, birthdate, Hamilton Mill address and if you are interested in becoming a team parent to milltennis@ bellsouth.net to sign up for a team. Here is some helpful info as you plan your teams: ∙ Hamilton Mill resident only ∙ 8 under, 10 under, 12 under, 14 under and 18 under - Age you are before Aug 31st. ∙ Single gender teams ∙ Team parent (approved by USTA). ∙ 4 players needed ∙ 2 lines of singles; 1 line of doubles ∙ Match times - Girls: Saturdays at 1pm; Boys: Saturdays at 3pm ∙ Season is from May 12th – June 30th ∙ Team coaching for the teams ∙ Free T-shirt ∙ Fees-league fee 24.00, USTA membership 20.00 (10 and under is free membership for a year.) For more information the USTA website is www.ustaatlanta.com/ summerjtt.
TENNIS NEWS Let me know what other questions you may have after reading over the info. My email is jeff.milltennis@gmail.com ADULT BEGINNER 101/102 CLASSES STARTS IN MARCH A NEW SESSION STARTING AT THE END OF APRIL Did you see all the players on the courts? Don’t be left out when they all head to their tennis team party. Come join the most popular event at Hamilton Mill. Tennis 101 is for new players and 102 is for players who have played. It is 5 one-hour group lessons once a week for $70.00. The class will break for spring break in April. If you do not have a racket or it is over 5 years old, we will let you use a demo with the new technology until you are ready for a racket. The classes will get you ready for summer league play. Email the tennis shop at milltennis@bellsouth.net or call 770-945-6472 for class times and days. We fill up quickly on the classes, so do not wait until the deadline. DRILLS, DRILLS, DRILLS Tuesday Night Adult Drills - 7:30-8:30pm; Cost $10.00 - Join us Tuesday evenings for an hour of fast paced, high energy drills to help you improve your game. RSVP by 5pm Monday – you must have a reserved spot to attend.
BALL MACHINE What crazy wet weather we have had! If the sun is out and your partner/team can’t play, then come try the ball machine. It is a great work out, and you will feel better about your match. It comes with the ball mower to pick up all 200 balls in 5 minutes. The cost is 15.00 for the hour, and we also have unlimited monthly and yearly rates. Call or email the pro-shop to reserve your time. It cannot be reserved on the court scheduler. COURT NEWS With the amount of play the courts get during the warmer months, remember to hang the roll drys back on the fence. If the court trash if full, empty it in the big containers outside the court. Don’t forget we have big blue recycling cans located at Millview and Lakeview. Report court issues to the shop at milltennis@bellsouth.net so we can get it repaired in a timely matter. The Wilson ball recycler will be hanging on the back fence at Lakeview. Please donate your match balls for the junior program. I find quite a few balls in the trash cans that have only been played with once. If the whole neighborhood works together as a team, then we will all win!
Friday Adult Drills - Friday 9:30am-10:30am; Cost $10.00 - TGIF Drills! Did you have a bad match during the week? Come to drills and work on your tennis skills to be ready for that next match. RSVP by 5pm Thursday - you must have a reserved spot to attend.

TENNIS TIPS
TENNIS TIP - THE OVERHEAD SMASH from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis The overhead has become a lost art with the pro level game. In league tennis the overhead is a vital part of shot execution. Most of us play the Atlanta Lawn ‘Lob’ Tennis Association league throughout the year. If the opponents can’t beat you with their strategy or technique, then they will lob you until the “Cows Come Home.” If you grew up around farm land, like I did, you will know what this means - “forever.” You can’t stop them from hitting the lob, but you can ease the frustration with a good overhead smash! Here are a few tips. 1. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BALL As soon as you start thinking about missing, you might have the tendency to take your eyes off the ball before contact. The wind can always change the direction. When your eyes leave the ball, your head shifts, and when the head shifts, the face of the racquet does so as well. 2. USE YOUR FREE HAND As soon as you see the shot is an overhead, get your free (left or right) hand up and point at the ball until you hit it. Doing this helps you keep your eyes on the ball. Keeping your hand up helps with balance when you take your racket back to hit. 3. OVERHEAD OR UNDERHEAD Make contact with the ball above your shoulders a foot in front of you. Letting the ball drop will make your hitting arm bend, and you will lose power and control. Do you hit your serve below your shoulders? 4. GET SIDEWAYS BEFORE YOU HIT THE BALL With your hand and racket up and ready early to hit the shot, make sure you turn sideways. Turning sideways will let you swing up on the ball - like your serve. If you are sideways, then your back can’t bend. Guess what?
Your head will not drop before you hit the ball. Remember, if you can’t turn sideways, then it is not an overhead shot. 5. LET IT BOUNCE Is the lob too high? Is the sun in your eyes? Are you too close to the net? Are you moving in from the baseline to the net? Are you tired? Has it been forever since your last overhead? If you have to hurry and hit the ball, then hit the shot out of the air. However, letting it bounce gives you a lot more time to hit the shot. Additionally, you will be in a better position if it comes back. 6. OVERHEAD IN DOUBLES If you don’t have an overhead that ends the point in one swing, then it is better to hit the ball back crosscourt in front of your partner. They can be there for the shot that comes back - what I call “getting the rebound.” You will be ready if the lob return goes over your partner’s head. 7. KEEP THE BALL IN PLAY If the ball gets behind you, just try and hit the ball back in play. Trying to hit an overhead that gets behind your body will make the ball soar too long. Blocking the ball or swinging 50% will keep you in the point. 8. LOOK THE PART Your opponents hit the lob because you are at the net, in trouble, strategy or they have nothing else to do. Even if you miss the overhead, following these tips on technique and placement will not tip them off to keep lobbing. If you show frustration, plan to see the lob until...The “COWS COME HOME.” YOU LOOK GOOD, YOU PLAY GOOD! See ya on the courts!
