RESIDENT COLUMN

Reading Tidbits by Deb Puszewski, Ed.S.

As we prepare for another school year, I thought it might be helpful to share a few ideas to get things going in the right direction. As a former elementary school teacher, literacy coach and reading specialist in Gwinnett County for more than 25 years, I was often asked: “How do I decide if a book is the correct level for my child?” That is a great question, and here is a simplified answer when you are trying to make a decision quickly at the library, bookstore etc. (Note: Non-fiction is generally more difficult than fiction due to the technical vocabulary and the plethora of text features readers will encounter.) 1. Listen to your child read about 100 words from the book. 2. Count the number of errors they make. (If they correct a mistake on their own, do not count it as an error…but be sure to praise them for noticing it and fixing it by themselves!) 3. Use the chart below as a general guide for book selection. The percentages indicate the number of words they read correctly.

95%-100% = Independent Reading Level

This is a great book for them to read by themselves.

90%-94% = Instructional Reading Level

This is a book that will need some support from you, a sibling etc.

Below 90% = Hard Reading Level

They will probably struggle through this book. I do not recommend this! Be sure to check your child’s comprehension level as well. Ask them to retell (in their own words) what they have just read. Those with limited comprehension may want to find a slightly easier book. (**Remember that your child’s teacher is ultimately the best resource, and they can provide you with your child’s reading level once they have finished initial assessments.) Our goal is to motivate and keep kids interested in reading! Remember to include your child in the selection of books. You want them to be interested in the topic that is chosen. However, we also need to be sure to expose them to different genres – especially non-fiction - as much of our adult life deals with non-fiction literature.

Teaching kids to read is truly my passion, and I look forward to sharing more tidbits with you in the future! 6 | HOMETOWN HERALD | August 2018

THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A PATIENT. This is Ginny—a daughter, a friend and an elementary school teacher with a passion for shaping young minds. She loves that her primary care provider understands her unique health needs as well as her hectic schedule. With convenient locations and 24/7 online scheduling, they make it easier for her to make health a priority. Ginny’s goal is to start the school year off right— feeling her best and ready to meet her students. At GMG Primary Care, we make that possible.

She’s more than just a patient.

SWIM TEAM NEWS

THE HAMILTON MILL HAMMERHEADS

2018 Season Overview

The Hamilton Mill Hammerheads had another amazing swim season this year. All swimmers learned a lot, improved their times and most importantly had fun! Thank you to our head coach Amy Smith, Assistant Coach Joni Graves and all of our junior coaches that did an amazing job leading all of our swimmers. Our swimmers of the week for the entire season were Corrine Dunnington, Landon Goldstone, Graham Bollier, Kate Davis, Emma Wallace, Adelaine Dunnington, Ethan Peeples, Jack Galvin, Amelia Dyar, Faby Pena Damoni, Allie Niehoff, Landyn Anderson, Halle Staples, Henry Hughes, and Taylor Keister. Congrats on your hard work! Many of our swimmers achieved times that made them eligible for the Gwinnett County Swim League Championships on July 14 and 15. Best of luck to all those that earned a spot, and we hope you had a great time! Photos courtesy of Ashley Patch, Christy Chromek and Carrie Smola. Cover photo by Ashley Patch.

HAMILTON MILL’S INDEPENDENCE DAY PARTY This year, the party started at 4:00 on Saturday, June 30 on the Lakeview pool deck with DJ JayD spinning some tunes and playing pool games and trivia. The Fruit Smashers and Edee’s BBQ trucks served residents as they enjoyed the pool party, Space Ball ride and Triple Play Game inflatable. We also had Bubba on deck with Balloon Animals and a Magic Show in the clubhouse! Our charity this year, Jambos, brought Chopper from the Gwinnett Stripers, and he danced on deck with the DJ and kids while Jambos served free popcorn. Thank you to everyone that donated to the pajama drive… we collected over 60 pairs of pajamas for foster kids in Gwinnett. We even had one mystery resident donate 20 pairs… whoever you are… your generosity is very much appreciated! Residents Marcia Cristal, Mikella Betanzos, Donna Daugherty, and Brenda Weller were the lucky winners from the raffle for two infield box seats to the Gwinnett Stripers game of their choice. Congrats to them!

and Fireworks

After the pool party, people gathered on the basketball courts and common areas to dance and sing along to the R&B Inc. Band. R&B jammed to hit dance songs from the 60’s to now! They played Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” right before the fireworks began... talk about giving you chills! The AMAZING fireworks show lasted 15 minutes with amazing views over the lake. After the fireworks, the band continued to play and the weather held out for a great evening! Thank you so much to Gwinnett County PD and the Fire Marshall for your help during this event. A huge shout out to our sponsors, Karate Atlanta and Hermes Realty Group– thanks for hanging out with us and for all the great beach balls!

RECIPE

ENJOY A REFRESHING BREAKFAST

Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese Breakfast has long since been dubbed ‘the most important meal of the day.’ While some might dispute that distinction, there’s no disputing that a delicious breakfast can be a great way to begin a day. Freshness can go a long way toward making breakfast something special. For example, fresh peaches make this recipe for ‘Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese’ from Christopher Hirsheimer’s ‘The San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market Cookbook’ (Chronicle Books) something to savor. The dish also works as an appetizer and can be made with nectarines. Serves 4

Ingredients • 4 slices country bread • 2 peaches • Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing • 1/4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola cheese

Directions 1. Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. 2. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. 3. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread onefourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.
