SOCIAL NEWS

SPRING CARNIVAL 2018 On Saturday, March 24 close to 500 kids and parents came out to the Lakeview Clubhouse recreational area and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and all the activities! The weather held out and kids and adults alike enjoyed dancing to top 40 tunes spun by DJ Dan, played games and won AWESOME prizes like Easter candy, squishies, and Fandango gift cards! Everyone was taking selfies with the fun props and with the Easter Bunny in the photo booth. We had two fun inflatable jumpy houses to play in. The kids enjoyed petting and playing with the cutest farm animals and got their faces painted by Ariel, Elena and Captain America! Everyone enjoyed the FREE popcorn and cotton candy, carnival food from Fruit Smashers, BBQ sandwiches from Edee’s in Dacula, and shopping with our awesome local vendors! We had DoTerra, Lipsense, Code Ninjas, Juke N Jive Creamery, Limelight Cosmetics, Sugar Hill Spine, Pure by Simone, Agnes and Dora Clothing and Junior’s Deli in on the fun and mingling with Hamilton Mill residents. To wrap up the festivities, we had an Easter Egg hunt for the little ones (4 and under) at 2:30, and then let the bigger kids take over at 3:15 for their hunt on the terrace. The Easter eggs were filled with candy and toys, and a few lucky kids got the golden eggs with REAL golden dollars inside. Everyone had a BLAST! Thank you to the Mill Creek High School Beta Club volunteers and a huge shout out to our sponsors Dacula Dojo and Hermes Realty Group. Thank you so much for helping make this event happen!

TENNIS NEWS

TENNIS NEWS

from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis Yes, it is May already. Hopefully this month the weather will be better than last month. This used to be a “catch your breath month” but not anymore. I like to consider May as our event/repair month before the ALTA mixed doubles and USTA leagues get going again. We have plenty going on this month with Hamilton Mill for Hope 2018, summer junior training, and Memorial Day Round-Robin. SUMMER LEAGUE DEADLINES Remember that summer league is a very busy time during the tennis season. Reserve your court for all your flex league and social play, but also remember to cancel the court time if not needed. ALTA–Summer League Mixed Doubles starting Saturday, June 2nd @ 9:00am. Senior Ladies starting Thursday, May 31st @ 6:30pm. Senior Men starting Friday, June 1st @ 6:30pm. USTA–Summer League Women starting Thursday, May 17th @ 9am. Women starting Sunday, June 3rd @ 12 noon. Men starting Sunday, June 3rd @ 4pm. Starting Saturday, May 12, Girls at 1:00pm and Boys at 3:00pm. COURT NEWS Court resurfacing will begin the week of April 30th for courts 9-12. Weather is a big issue when you resurface the courts. Be patient, because we are trying to get it done before summer league starts. We will open courts 15-16 for reservations. Call the shop to reserve the courts. 2018 HAMILTON MILL FOR HOPE The 13th Hamilton Mill for Hope will be held on May 14th and 15th at the Lakeview courts from 9-2. Forty ladies will compete in a two day ladies round robin with vendors. It will culminate with lunch and a speaker. This is one of Hamilton Mill’s biggest charities for breast cancer. The Hamilton Mill for Hope committee and all residents of Hamilton Mill are the catalyst for this charity tennis round-robin. Last year they raised over $10,000.00!

TENNIS TIPS

TENNIS TIP - BASIC TIPS FOR TENNIS from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis

When I went to the US Open and saw Rafael Nadal practicing, I wanted to see what his coach was saying to him during the session. During Rafael’s ground stroke practice, I got close enough to hear the coach’s advice. After what I heard, I was excited to take his words of wisdom back to Hamilton Mill. As Rafael was hitting, his coach simply said “take your racket back.” That was it. I was expecting some new, mind-boggling instruction. Instead, I heard something so simple, which is why I am discussing the fundamentals of tennis. The basics solve the problem. If it works for Nadal, then it will work for you. Tennis is a challenging sport. Don’t expect too much from your performance too soon, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. However, these 10 essential tips will help you get off on the right foot. 1. TENNIS RACKETS There are plenty of rackets to choose from (with the standards being particularly good even at the lower end of the scale). Rackets for beginners and junior-sized rackets are relatively inexpensive — but don’t just go for the cheapest — choose one that matches your body and grip size. At the tennis shop, we have rackets for you to demo to figure out which one best suits you. 2. PRACTICE The world’s best players have spent years getting to where they are by starting at an early age and with the help from some of the best coaches. You may play well one week, and then notso-great the next for no apparent reason. Don’t get frustrated by this — it’s normal! Just keep playing and your game will sort itself out.

Memorial Day Tennis Round Robin When: Monday, May 28th 10:00am-12:00pm Where: Millview Courts What: Hamilton Mill pro will run an adult doubles round-robin... Changing partners every round Cost: $10 single player/$15 for couples Water will be provided-BYOB

3. TAKE LESSONS The best way to improve is to take lessons. Playing league tennis every week will improve your match play, but it may hurt your stroke technique. Playing with the incorrect stroke for weeks will create bad habits. Did you know it takes 3,500 strokes to cure a bad habit? You have certified pros right in your backyard! 4. WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN Always warm-up and cool-down before and after play. This should involve the stretching of your arms and legs as well as light jogging. Do the same at the end of the game, ending with the stretches. 5. STAY REFRESHED Remember to drink your favorite sports drink (not beer) and water. You can even eat some light snacks. You will see professional players taking a drink or eating a banana when they take their breaks. 6. HIT THE BALL After you are confident with your strokes, the ball machine is the best way to practice on your own. 7. IMPROVE YOUR SPEED Tennis players need to be able to react to an opponent’s shots by moving quickly around the court. Jump rope or sprint to get your feet moving. 8. THE RIGHT GRIP There are different types of grips for different shots. Either take lessons or talk to an experienced player to give you advice. You will want to use the correct grip for each shot to avoid bad habits in the future. 9. IMPROVE YOUR STAMINA It doesn’t matter how fast you are around the court, if you’re dragging after only a few games. A good frequent aerobic workout will help. Play more tennis or take time to play other sports to increase your endurance. 10. ONE POINT AT A TIME Forget about the past, especially if you just lost the previous point. Concentrate on the current point. Getting angry or frustrated doesn’t help you play better. Focus on the future.
