HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF PICKLEBALL? What is it?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis.

Who plays? Two or four players of all ages! Pickleball was invented

in the mid 1960s and has become one of America's most popular growing sports among all ages.

Would you like to see Pickleball in Hamilton Mill? Take the survey here: https://tinyurl.com/HamiltonMillPickleball Or fill out a survey at the Lakeview Clubhouse office.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

DEAR RESIDENTS: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gaye Cantrell for her service and commitment to Hamilton Mill over the past year and a half. As many of you are aware, due to a neurologic condition that Gaye has been seeking treatment for, she is unable to continue in her role as your property manager. She will be a tough act to follow! While I am new at Hamilton Mill, I am not new to the industry. I have been a property manager for over 10 years and have been with Shaben and Associates since 2004. This past year I have helped at Hamilton Mill in various ways, and I am familiar with the community. I am excited to meet the residents of Hamilton Mill and hope you will stop by and introduce yourself. Summer is always a busy time of year in the community. This year we have installed a card reader on both pool gates. So, please remember that you must have an Amenity Access Card in order to enter the pool areas. The Rules and Regulations for use of amenities state that membership cards must be presented upon request and states that individuals that do not have a membership card while using any of the amenities will be asked to leave, until a valid membership card is presented. If you do not have a card and wish to obtain one, please contact the Property Management office. Residents must be current with their assessments for the card to be activated. Starting in June we will only issue amenity cards on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to 5pm. On Mondays we will be extending the office hours to 7pm, by appointment only.

10 | HOMETOWN HERALD | June 2018

With the warmer weather upon us, it is a great time to complete outside projects. Don’t forget a modification request form must be submitted for approval, prior to work being started, for any exterior changes to your home and yard. This includes the front and back yards. To avoid a violation letter, please make sure the following items have been completed:

• Your mailbox has been painted and numbers are intact. • Your lawn is mowed and edged on a regular basis. • Your lawn and landscape beds are weed free. • Refresh the mulch and pine straw in your landscape beds. • Prune shrubs as needed. I look forward to working with the residents of Hamilton Mill and thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself. Here is to a safe, fun-filled summer! TENNIS NEWS

TENNIS NEWS

from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis As we get into June - besides the weather heating up - the summer teams are in full swing. Summer tennis consists of ALTA mixed doubles, USTA, flex league, lessons, camps and roundrobins. I thought spring and fall ALTA were a busy time but with summer being so short, everything is played in a compact 21/2 months. The matches in the summer are some of the best because the players have been playing a lot, and they are at the top of their games. Head down to the courts to one of the league matches and cheer on Hamilton Mill! ALTA LEAGUE PLAYOFF TEAMS: Weekday Women: Hanes A3 – Division Winners Visintainer B3 – 2nd Place D’Adamio C8 – 2nd Place Saturday Men: Perkins A5 – Division Winners Kopanski B8 – Division Winners Sunday Women: Heusel A3 – 2nd Place

favorites - slushies and ice creams - along with sodas and sports drinks. CALLING ALL JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS We are trying to form more junior ALTA teams for the fall. Sign up is June for the fall. Calling all “part time” players, “I love tennis” players and “tennis is my second sport” players. The ALTA Junior Tennis League is designed for boys and girls ages 7 to 18. The teams are organized by gender with the girls’ teams playing on Saturday afternoons at 1:30 pm and the boys’ teams playing on Saturday afternoons at 3:30 pm. Teams are broken down into 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under, and 18 & under age groups. Team Managers, typically the parent of one of the team members, organize the eight (8) or more players. We will do a once a week clinic for the kids with a coach. I know Saturdays can be busy, but if we get enough players on the team then the child doesn’t have to play every week. Email the tennis shop at milltennis@bellsouth.net for info. on how to sign up. You must be a Hamilton Mill resident to play on teams.

FALL ALTA LEAGUE DEADLINE The sign up for the fall ALTA league is June 11th -July 6th. The deadlines are usually 2 months before the league. The fall league starts in September. New teams and players wanting to switch teams need to sign the online book. For questions on which team to sign up for (or to transfer to) give us a call, or email us at the shop. We will help you with your decision. PRO SHOP NEWS With Hamilton Mill Pro Shop staying current with the new styles, the new NXG Head rackets have arrived for you to demo for FREE. TENNIS TIPS

TENNIS TIPS 9 WAYS TO INSTANTLY IMPROVE YOUR TENNIS GAME from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis

1. STICK WITH ONE PATTERN OF PLAY. Stop trying to get creative on the court and start hitting the shots you know will work. “Better players only have one or two patterns of play through a match.” 2. PULL BACK ON YOUR SERVE SPEED. The serve is the most important shot in tennis, but that doesn’t mean you should wail on the ball at all cost. Pros use 80% of the speed to produce better placement. 3. GET YOUR BACK LEG BEHIND THE BALL. Check to make sure your bodyweight is fully loaded on your back leg before you play every shot. Getting your back leg and weight behind the ball allows for easier weight transfer and a much more consistent shot. 4. PLAY THE MOMENTUM OF THE MATCH. Losing by a few points to that person that you normally kill on court? Adjust your momentum. A lot of league players will lose two points and try to rush to get back. They’re less organized and more panicky. Simply slow down. Take the full 20 seconds you have between points to gather yourself. Take a deep breath. Winning two points in a row is a momentum. 5. DRINK ON EVERY CHANGEOVER; SNACK ON EVERY OTHER. Many league players don’t keep up their nutrition; they don’t keep eating and drinking throughout the entire match. After the changeover you are not sure how long you will be out there until next changeover.

6. DON’T GO FOR THE LINE EVERY SHOT. It’s one thing to be aggressive—it’s quite another to be reckless. You don’t want to risk your shots. Bring your sights in, and pick a target on the court where you feel confident that you can play a solid offensive shot without incurring much risk of air. 7. IDENTIFY YOUR OPPONENT’S WEAKNESSES AND HIT THERE. Every match has a five-minute warm-up beforehand. Use that time to get ready to play (obviously), but also to test your opponent by hitting forehands and backhands to determine which is the best or worst at returning. 8. STRETCH. If you don’t typically play well the first 15 minutes of a match, you may want to consider stretching—or stretching more— beforehand. Whether this means taking up static stretching, holding a pose for a short period of time, or dynamic stretching where you loosen up by moving through specific exercises… just do something. 9. GET YOUR RACQUET STRUNG BY A PROFESSIONAL. Stores or basement stringers don’t know how you play. Your neighborhood professional knows you. They are watching you play the league match. Your racket strung correctly, for your game, could be how you won the last match.
