TENNIS NEWS
TENNIS NEWS
from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis When July hits we are in full swing in summer tennis. Our Summer ALTA mixed-doubles, Senior teams, and USTA League play will come to an end in July. Playoffs will start and continue on until August. At this time, Hamilton Mill teams are competing for playoffs. July is the last month for Summer Kids Tennis training and Academy before school starts in August. Scheduling your time on the court is a must in July. Remember, courts 15 and 16 are walk on courts that can be scheduled up to 30 minutes before you play. JULY 6: IMPORTANT FALL ALTA DATE The deadline for signing up for fall teams is approaching. All players must sign the online book at hmill.com before they can get picked for a team or move to another team. This date is an ALTA deadline. If you want to play, sign the book at least a couple of weeks before the deadline. The Fall tennis season begins in September. SUMMER LEAGUE PLAY TIMES • Weekday Women’s USTA-Thursday 9:00am • Weekday 40+ Women’s USTA-Tuesday @ 9:00am • Alta Senior Men-Friday @ 6:30pm • Alta Mixed Doubles-Saturday @ 9:00am • Sunday Business Women-Sunday @ 12:00pm • Men’s USTA-Sunday @ 4pm • Summer Leagues will continue until the end of July.

I also want to welcome Madison Park to the staff at the Hamilton Mill pro shop! PRO TENNIS IN ATLANTA BB&T Atlanta Open, July 21-July 29th Come watch your favorite veteran players and new players trying to qualify for the US Open in New York City. It is a good tournament to see up close as the pros speed and pace on the ball. It is an ATP World 250 Tour event. The draw is a 28 player drawer with a 16 player doubles event. Tickets and more information are at the tournament website at www.bbtatlantaopen.com
USTA HILDERHAUF 40 AND OVER TEAM After qualifying for state playoffs for USTA, the Beth Hilderhauf team went down to Columbus, Georgia to the state competition in June. The tournament was played on clay but that did not stop them from competing at the highest level. After winning 5 team matches in a row, they qualified for the finals. They came up short in the final but they represented themselves as champions. Congratulations to Carmen Hermes, Mary

TENNIS TIPS
TENNIS TIPS 7 TIPS ON RETURN OF SERVE from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis
1. KEEP THE RETURN SIMPLE. Your job is to put the ball in play and only go for a better return if you get an easier serve. In doubles, try to put the ball back in front of your partner. 2. MOVE IN ON KICK OR SPIN SERVES. If the server hits a kick serve, the returner also tries to keep control of the court by moving in and taking the ball before it kicks too high and wide. Moving in early can give you the opportunity to make a strategic return on this tricky serve. 3. MOVE FORWARD IN AN ANGLE TO RETURN THE BALL. Check to make sure your bodyweight is fully loaded on your back leg before you play every shot. Getting your back leg and weight behind the ball allows for easier weight transfer and a much more consistent shot. 4. PLAY THE MOMENTUM OF THE MATCH. Find the spot you want to return the serve then move back a few steps. This will give you the movement forward against the serve.
5. IS IT A FIRST OR SECOND SERVE? Your position on the court when you return the serve will be different if the serves have different speeds. 6. GIVE YOURSELF MORE TIME. If you find that you still can’t react quickly enough, another way is to stand further back from the baseline. Each step you stand further back will give that little bit of extra time to meet the ball. And when it comes to returning big serves, every moment can help. 7. SLICE FAST BALLS. Instead of trying to drive your returns, slice the ball. With a slice, the impact of the ball on your racket can be further back. It is also easier to control the ball with a slice and can buy you some time to get back into position on court if you’ve been pushed out of your comfort zone. SEE YA ON THE COURTS!
4. RETURN AN IMAGINARY BALL. Good returners also have another habit that can help improve their returns. When the opponent serves the ball in the net, they return an imaginary ball. Their objective is to make the initial decision of reading the direction of the ball before it hits the net. If they can accomplish this, they can also by inference return the fastest balls.

HAMILTON MILL FOR HOPE
Our 3nd Annual Hamilton Mill HopeFest tennis tournament was held on May 14th and 15th and raised over $16,000 to support breast cancer care and prevention at Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation. The fun began at the 13th Annual Buffalo’s Café PINK PARTY in their new location. There was an amazing show of support from the community and a great night with friends. We raised a lot of money selling Pink Party tickets and raffling items donated from local businesses. Thanks to Buffalo’s Café for their generous support and to all the great staff for making it a big success.
Each day started with a goody bag and continental breakfast donated by Juniors Deli, which led into a 10 team round robin format tournament. The event brings together players from all levels and teams and proves how great it is to play tennis at Hamilton Mill yearround. The closing luncheon was catered by Buffalo’s Café at the Hamilton Mill Clubhouse, which included a guest speaker, prizes and a fund-raising raffle with awesome baskets donated by HMill tennis teams. Special thanks to Heidi Floyd for sharing her inspirational story about her diagnosis and ongoing efforts to fight breast cancer, and continuing her life mission to support others and save lives. You can connect with Heidi on LinkedIn and Facebook as Heidi Floyd, and on Twitter as @followheidi.
The Tennis Tournament at the Lakeview Tennis Center had over 40 participants and many volunteers and spectators who enjoyed a fun, action-packed day of tennis and shopping at the booths set up by local businesses.
Many thanks to all our participants, volunteers, coaches, sponsors and businesses who made this event so successful and for supporting our fight against breast cancer. ~ Hamilton Mill HopeFest 2018

SUWANEE FARMER’S MARKET
DISNEY’S NEWSIES
“The Suwanee Farmer’s Market has a loyal customer and farmer base,” notes Suwanee Events Manager Amy Doherty. “Our market is almost as much a social event as it is an opportunity to access locally grown produce and a variety of other items, such as salsa, honey, eggs and meat, and baked goods.” suwanee.com
Based on the Disney film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. Inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this high-energy musical soars with rousing dance numbers and non-stop thrills. In New York City at the turn of the century, publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst look to take advantage of newsboys to increase profits. Enter charismatic Jack Kelly who unwittingly leads a ragged band of teenaged “newsies” across the city to strike for what’s right. This Tony Award-winning musical, based on the timeless Disney film, is toe-tapping fun for the entire family. www.auroratheatre.com
