BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINATIONS COMING SOON! The Hamilton Mill Board of Directors Election is fast approaching for the years 2019-2020. There are three seats to be filled for a two year term. We will call for nominations in our November issue of the Hometown Herald along with an application, so please be thinking if you would be willing to serve on the Board. Nominations will be due by 11/30/2018. In addition, we will plan an evening in December for a meet and greet with the candidates which will give you an opportunity to ask questions. (Date to be determined). New members to the Board will be announced at the Annual Meeting in January. The Hamilton Mill Board of Directors

DEAR RESIDENTS: Welcome Fall and cooler temperatures! We hope you are enjoying football games and tailgating this season. We would also like to welcome Sam Basquin and E’Lane Tullis to the Board of Directors. We look forward to working with you! Thank you to all the residents who have completed home improvement projects so far this year. We have processed approximately 250 requests for 2018. We appreciate everyone taking the time to submit the form and follow the process. Now for a landscaping tip - if you have not applied a fall pre-emergent for winter weeds in Bermuda and Zoysia grasses, please do so as soon as possible to avoid weeds and violation letters from your property manager. Thank you for continuing to make Hamilton Mill the great community it is! Maureen Murphy and Chris Shanks

RESIDENT COLUMN

HAMILTON MILL GRADUATION BANNERS There is some exciting news to share regarding Graduation Banners for Hamilton Mill! The Board of Directors has approved the formation of a Banner Committee, which would serve as a ‘sub-committee’ under the current Grounds and Facilities Committee. The purpose of the Banner Committee will be to streamline future Graduation Banners within our community. This is a wonderful opportunity to allow group graduation banners to be displayed at the entrance of every neighborhood with clear directions as to size, posts, etc... This will ultimately give those of us who choose to participate in a group banner a chance to celebrate our Hamilton Mill Graduates in this “tradition” of the yearly graduation banner displays. Hamilton Mill is comprised of 27 neighborhoods. Whether you have an upcoming graduate, had one in the past, or just want to help, we need the cooperation of dedicated, dependable, and organized neighbors who will act as the liaison responsible for organizing the names, taking the group photo, collecting funds, ordering the banner, and placing and removing the yearly Graduation Banner at the entrance of your particular neighborhood. If you are interested in representing your neighborhood, we plan on having a preliminary meeting in the Lakeview Clubhouse Conference Room sometime in January 2019. The exact date is yet to be determined. It is imperative that volunteers from each neighborhood attend, otherwise, the only alternative would be the generic ‘Congratulations Hamilton Mill Graduates’ as was displayed this past May. I can be contacted at the following email address for any additional questions: congratz.grad@gmail.com Regards, Jackie Johnson

SOCIAL NEWS

Dueling P ianos The Andrew Brothers were back with Dueling Pianos to “wow” yet another crowd of singing and dancing Hamilton Mill residents at the Lakeview Clubhouse on Friday night, August 17. This show sold out in 4 hours! Groups of friends shared tables, food, and drinks as they listened to 3 solid hours of comedian pianists Damian and Mark go back and forth with requests straight from the audience. The night started out with a toast and a little “How Sweet It Is” to get the crowd warmed up. Shortly after that, the crowd got into the swing of the night and requested “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” that was quickly trumped by offering more money to stop that song and play “Dream On” by Aerosmith instead. Mark was afraid his voice was not warmed up enough that early on in the night to take on that famous high note, but we were pretty

12 | HOMETOWN HERALD | October 2018

sure he nailed it. The requests started rolling in and everything from John Cougar Mellencamp to Outkast to Tears for Fears to Dexys Midnight Runners were sung and played. The night could not go on without the classic requests that everybody knows: Livin’ On A Prayer, Friends In Low Places, and Don’t Stop Believin’! By the end of the night, everyone was dancing and singing along to the well-known piano bar classic, “Piano Man” by Billy Joel, and had a great time interacting with the Andrew Brothers. Thanks to everyone that came out and made this event an awesome one!

HAMILTON MILL POOL CLOSING MOVIE NIGHT It’s hard to believe that the Summer of 2018 pool season is over and Fall is upon us! We celebrated the end of pool season with a fun family event on Saturday, September 8th. Everyone enjoyed beautiful weather and a lovely night catching a flick on a HUGE poolside inflatable movie screen! Starting at 6:30pm, DJ Tony started the party with music and games with the kids (and adults)! We had a limbo contest and played hot potato and the winner took home The Greatest Showman movie! Kids danced, swam and sang along to their favorite songs one last time this pool season. Speaking of singing along… at dark, we watched “The Greatest Showman” and kids and adults knew all the words to all the songs from this year’s best musical performance. We served FREE popcorn during the movie as people hung out in the pool and on deck making memories with friends and family. It was a great night and a great end to the 2018 pool season. A special shout out and big thank you to North Georgia Pediatric Dentistry and the Dacula Goddard School for sponsoring this event and hanging out with us all night!

RECIPE

GET CREATIVE with Apples this Fall Autumn is apple-picking season, and many farmers’ markets, grocery stores and even roadside apple stands are chock-full of delicious apples this time of year. That makes fall the perfect time to whip up some apple-inspired foods. This recipe for “Elsie’s Stewed Apples” from Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey) requires a tad more effort than traditional applesauce recipes, but the extra work is well worth it in the end. When shopping for apples in advance of preparing this recipe, avoid apples that have a mealy texture as well as those that are overly sweet. Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients • 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices • 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey • 1/2 cup white wine • Zest of 1 lemon • Juice of 1 lemon • Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

Directions 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Pumpkin Carving Tips and Tricks

• Start with a fresh pumpkin. Look for pumpkins that have a thick, green stem. These usually are fresh and haven’t been handled much. A thick stem also may indicate fleshier pumpkin walls that can be carved more easily. Avoid pumpkins that are soft or full of blemishes, or those that have dried, shriveled stems. • Rather than impeding the structural integrity of the pumpkin by cutting off the top and the stem for interior access, cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin. This will still make it easy to reach inside and clean out the pumpkin. • Scoop out the pulp and seeds. Be sure to thoroughly clean the inside of the pumpkin. Leaving the pulpy, stringy matter and seeds inside can cause the pumpkin to rot that much faster and produce a foul odor. • Keep it cool. Heat can adversely affect carved pumpkins, so work in a cool area and store the pumpkin in a cold garage or refrigerator if you need a few extra days before displaying it. Also, carving experts suggest using an electric light inside rather than a candle. • Work in your lap. When carving faces or intricate designs, looking down onto the pumpkin provides more control. • Don’t cut all the way through. Many pumpkin designers end up shaving or scraping off the outer rind of the pumpkin, but leave a delicate orange film underneath. Light can still shine through, but the design will not collapse on itself as easily if you were to cut straight through the pumpkin wall. Experiment with different tools to achieve the desired look. • Rubbing exposed areas of the pumpkin flesh with petroleum jelly may help keep the pumpkin moist. Some designs will last for a few days. However, since pumpkins are highly perishable, it’s wise to wait to carve until a day or two before putting a pumpkin on display.
