Moonshine Festival Patrons, As I write this letter, I’m reminded of the history of the many volunteers over the past 50 years who have taken the initiative to keep this great event flourishing. I can’t help but think that Mr. Fred Goswick, who started what is now known as the Mountain Moonshine Festival 50 years ago this month, is proud of what a community event it has become. I would also be remiss if I did not give credit to The Dawsonville Pool Room and Gordon Pirkle for those years he was able to ensure we did not go a year without the festival. The list of volunteers and organizations that have poured every spare second of their time into making this event successful is endless. As president of K.A.R.E. for Kids, Inc., I have had the pleasure of working with a great community that I call home each year to make this fundraiser a success. K.A.R.E. for Kids depends on the generosity of its volunteers and is most appreciative of the assistance and support that is received from volunteers, business owners, the Boy Scouts, civic organizations and all who come through the City of Dawsonville during the fourth weekend of October. K.A.R.E. is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to provide for kids in the community. Our main focus is to provide every child in Dawson County the Christmas they deserve. In years past K.A.R.E. has had the great pleasure to assist 500-700 children annually within the community. We work closely with our Dawson County School System as well as community organizations to provide year-round support on a referral basis. The Mountain Moonshine Festival is the sole source of fundraising for our organization. Where it all began…
A history of the Mountain Moonshine Festival Over 50 years ago, Dawsonville resident Fred Goswick asked a few farmers and crafters to come to town on Sunday to sell their products to leaf lookers as they drove around one of the oldest courthouses in Georgia. Little did Mr. Goswick know what the event would become. After growing success, Dawsonville’s fall festival was born in 1967. The Dawsonville Lions Club hosted the festival until the Dawson County Jaycees formed in 1969 and took over the festival in 1970. Founding members included Millard Bowen, Gordon Pirkle, Charles Finley and many other dedicated young men. The Jaycettes then formed in 1971 under the leadership of president Judy Bearden. The Jaycees and Jayettes were very busy in the early 70s. Their activities and projects were numerous as documented in archived newspaper articles, and many of the Jaycees received district, state, and national awards and many of them served as officers at all these levels. The main event for the group continued to be the festival, with proceeds going to the Empty Stocking Fund, which helped give local children a Christmas their families couldn’t afford. The Jaycees hosted the festival for the next 25 years, until their membership fizzled and the charter was lost. In the early 1990s, Jaycees Danny Pugh, Cat Castleberry and Gordon Pirkle, along with a few other concerned citizens, met in the Dawsonville Pool Room to discuss forming an organization to continue helping less fortunate children. The StarBright Foundation was formed in 1993 with Gordon Pirkle as president. The festival, now coined the Mountain Moonshine Festival, grew as the county rose to the occasion, and Dawson County quickly became the envy of other counties because of its concerted dedication to a very worthwhile project. In 2004, a similarly named organization in California requested StarBright change their name for legal reasons, and although the name changed to K.A.R.E. for Kids, Inc., its purpose has remained the same and continued to grow stronger. For the past 24 years, the Mountain Moonshine Festival has been hosted by StarBright/K.A.R.E. for Kids, but the basis of their mission was sparked by the Jaycees and Jaycettes. A desire and energy to help less fortunate children in Dawson County is the glue that has held the Mountain Moonshine Festival together for 50 years. For 50 years, the event has funded efforts to assist underprivileged children in Dawson County. And for 50 years, businesses and citizens of Dawson County have joined in this effort and together have made a difference in the lives of thousands of children. Thank you Jaycees and Jaycettes for your part in starting a 50-year tradition. Together we make Dawson County a great place to live. Here’s to 50 more!
