EMPTY NESTERS

(Finally) Do Bocce

A well planned and much anticipated Reunion Empty Nester Bocce Championship Challenge that had been meticulously planned for this past spring was totally washed out by torrential rains. Not to be denied the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, the Empty Nester group was determined to fit the bocce tournament in before the end of the year. The afternoon of October 21 brought 51 members of the Empty Nester group together to witness and to participate in the now annual Empty Nester Bocce Championship Challenge. Prior to the originally scheduled Bocce Challenge this past spring, JoEllen and John Marshall had hand crafted a custom trophy to be awarded to the winning team and then perpetually passed on to subsequent victors throughout the ensuing years. With the United States Open in golf having the Wanamaker Trophy, the International Tennis Federation having the Davis Cup and Augusta National having the famed green jacket it seemed only proper that the Reunion Empty Nester Bocce Championship Challenge should have‌the Marshall Hand. Demand for the coveted and hallowed award was surprising as 24 of the 51 attendees of the event formed 6 four man teams, all of whom were seeking that most cherished symbol of success in boccedom. When the dust had settled and after team after team had fallen in the single elimination competition, one team stood victorious. Congrats to the team of Nancy Scroggins, Ron Scroggins, Tom Dibble and John Santorelli for taking home the Marshall Hand for their 2017 triumph. With appetizers having been served during the bocce competition, the group was ready for the main meal immediately after game end. The theme of the evening was Soups, Sandwiches and Salads and there was a wealth of selections of all three categories. Chili, Red Beans & Rice, Beef Stroganoff, Split Pea Soup and more slow cooker delicacies were complimented with party sandwiches of chicken salad, pimento salad, roast beef‌yummm. Then, of course, no Empty Nester gathering would be complete without the always well received dessert table. As usual, everything was deliciously prepared and highly enjoyed by all in attendance. The event was hosted by Judy and Don Smith. Many thanks go out to all who contributed to the evening by bringing food items and to those who assisted in setting up before the event and for cleaning up afterward. A very, very special thanks goes out to Mike and Peggy Reiland and their hard working grandchildren for setting up the bocce courts even though Mike and Peggy were not going to be able to attend the event. Great job guys, many thanks. 6
