Empty NESTERS’ CORNER

EMPTY NESTERS’ Enjoy Trivia Night A wise man once said that if you will give an artist and idea and leave him or her unhampered and free to exercise their talents, a masterpiece will result. The Empty Nester group of Reunion Country Club has, at least for the short term, adopted that wise man’s observation by once again relying on the unbeatable skills of our resident cooks with another Pot Luck Supper. While the terminology and theory of another Pot Luck Supper seems redundant, it is far from that as the last meeting of the this group abundantly proved. Forty-eight members of the Empty Nester group gathered on the night of February 18th for an evening that is, annually, one of the favorites of the group…Trivia Night. To showcase the event even more, the menu selection of the night was simply Pot Luck Supper. “Simply Pot Luck Supper” is a true oxymoron when it comes to the cooks of the Empty Nester kitchens because the fare of the evening was predictably tempting to the taste buds. New Orleans style red beans & rice, shrimp & avocado, lasagna, a variety of casseroles and on and on. All to be topped by an equally tantalizing dessert table. When the dining was done, Jack Ofsharick and his side kick Mike Reiland once again spent a little more than an hour devoted to exercising the brain cells in the room with a series of trivia questions the answers to which everyone knew

they knew, but weren’t sure if what they knew they knew was absolutely correct. When the dust settled, the winning trivia team consisted of Ellen Kirk, Joyce Carey, Carolyn Notheis, Joanne & Michael Giel and Merridee & Ken Michelsen. It was a fun filled evening with lots of laughs shared by everyone there. Many thanks to the Smith Team: Judy & Donna and Jerry & Don who served as hosts for the event. Appreciation also goes out to the many volunteers who helped in set up before the event and clean up afterward not to mention the people who provided all the fantastic food. The Empty Nester group is open to and composed of Reunion residents who meet the sole requirement of no longer having children living at home with them. The group is totally selfsustaining and all Empty Nester functions and events are financed wholly by Empty Nester dues and occasional membership assessments with no supplement or financial assistance coming from HOA dues. Prospective members are invited to come to an event, free of charge, to see if there is an interest in joining. The membership is more than just a party club. It has evolved into friendships that provide strong support for one another. If you have an interest or more questions, please contract Rebecca Hagler at 678-641-6209 or email haglerrebecca@yahoo.com

Preparation for Stormy Weather Weather is unpredictable. Winter ice storms, a tornado or a summer downpour after weeks of drought can disrupt the flow of energy to our homes, schools, businesses and factories. Dangerous weather events can cause hazardous road conditions, downed power lines and extended power outages. If power lines go down because of a severe storm or tornado, it may be for an extended period of time leaving you without heat, air conditioning, running water or a way to cook your food. It’s a good idea to be prepared and collect supplies in case or an emergency. Before the storm create a 72 hour disaster kit: • flashlight and batteries • battery powered radio • one (1) gallon of water per person • non-perishable ready - to - eat food and a manual can opener • first aid kit • cash and credit cards • sleeping bag or blanket for each person • toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and other personal items • complete change of clothes for each person • food and water for your pet

April 2017

After a storm • Report outages and downed power lines to the power company. • Treat all power lines as dangerous- NEVER attempt to move power lines • Inside the house, unplug or turn off important units. When electricity is restored, power surges may be created that could destroy electronic devices. • Keep the refrigerator door closed – if unopened, food will remain cold for four hours. An unopened full freezer can hold the temperature for 48 hours; 24 hours if half full.
