EDUCATE STERLING This was an initiative developed by a relatively new resident to Sterling on the Lake, Tameka (Shelly) Brown. Shelly saw a post on Facebook that the state of Georgia was not participating in the “Tax Free Weekend” holiday this year. Many teachers spend out of pocket monies to supply their classrooms with necessities needed that operating budgets do not cover and in the past counted on the tax free weekend. The conversation continued on Facebook and became the groundwork and vision for creating the community wide initiative to collect school supplies to be distributed to those teachers living in Sterling on the Lake that signed up to receive supplies. That is when two resident teachers, another parent and Shelly formed “Education Matters at Sterling on the Lake.” We now have a thriving Facebook page called Educate Sterling, a hub for SOTL teachers and others who join to learn more about our initiative. We also provide resources and up to date school happenings and youth activity information. There are currently 25 teachers in our community that we wanted to help. Most teachers in SOTL teach either in Hall county or Gwinnett county. Several are Co-Op teachers as well as homeschoolers. The teachers “wish list” was posted on the Facebook page as well as on display with the collection box in the community clubhouse. The collected supplies were then distributed to those teachers that participated in the program. We currently have 4 members in our group including Shelly Brown the organizer and founder, Nicole Beard the administrator and marketer. Lynn Aniskiewicz

Please visit our facebook page Educate Sterling. You can also email us at educatesterling@gmail.com or call Shelly Brown at 678-481-4716 for additional details and to learn more about our initiative and how you can get involved. “I am humbled by the support we have received from so many undocumented angels as I’d like to call them. Those residents have been so gracious in giving what they can even if its words of encouragement, a shared link of discounted school supplies and/or events on our facebook page. All forms of support are appreciated. This project is our way of giving back to those who educate our future.” Thank you for your support, Shelly Brown

Family, Friends, Fun & Fireworks Sterling on the Lake entertained residents and guests with an amazing display of fireworks on July 7, 2018. The weather cooperated, and the day was filled with sunshine, a refreshing breeze and lots of activity throughout the day. Residents came early to set up their chairs in anticipation of the day’s scheduled activities. Lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and tailgating tents filled the area. The air was filled with great music and the sounds of children playing with their friends, dancing and showing off their prizes and artwork created at the creative station. The event sponsors, food and craft vendors came prepared with a wide variety of information on their services. A large menu of delicious food items as well as one-of-a-kind crafts and gift ideas were offered. As the afternoon turned into night, the anticipation grew waiting for the fireworks display. There was complete silence in the air when the fireworks started to light up the night sky followed by cheers and applause. Many of the younger children sat on a parent’s lap in complete silence and eyes drawn to the brightly lit sky filled with color and sparkles. A special thanks goes out to

SUMMER CAMP HIGHLIGHTS THE TALENTS OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S
Budding Engineers
“Young Engineers East Lanier held their STEM Adventure Summer Camp at Sterling on the Lake the week of July 23-July 27. Our campers participated in scientific experiments and enriching activities that challenged their minds to visualize natural phenomena and the forces acting around them. The children were charged with applying these scientific and physics concepts while constructing Lego models. They enjoyed an educational experience exploring the science behind motorcycles, cars, Ferris wheels and more. These children are our future, and we must say, our future is looking bright!”

HALLOWEEN REMINDERS A message regarding Halloween and Trick-or-Treating within the Sterling on the Lake community... Just a reminder that Trick-or-Treating is observed each year on Halloween Night, October 31st. Free Halloween Goody Bags for the first 100 resident children that stop by the clubhouse from 5:00PM – 6:00PM (while supplies last).
Trick-or-Treating: A Halloween Night tradition. As our community has become a popular location for Trick-or-Treating, please keep the following in mind: • If you would prefer to not participate in Trick-or-Treating and are home during the evening hours, please be sure your outdoor lights, front door or porch lights are turned off. • While Halloween activities affect many communities across the Greater Atlanta area, it is not specifically a Board nor Association regulated issue/activity. We have proactively partnered with Flowery Branch Police Officers to help manage the increased traffic associated with Trick-or-Treaters visiting Sterling on the Lake and to help keep this a safe activity for all local families. • If you are able to walk to the homes in your immediate area to Trick-or-Treat instead of driving vehicles, or able to use your golf carts if available, this helps lessen any congestion on the streets. Signage is placed at all of our entrances to inform guests that house-to-house Trick-or-Treating ends at 8:30PM.

September Fun Facts
October Fun Facts
As the ninth month of the year, September marks the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere (and the start of spring in the southern). Traditionally considered the month that marks transitions between seasons, it is often one of the most temperate weather-wise.
October comes from the Latin word octo which means eight. In ancient Rome, October was the eighth month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the tenth month of the year but it has retained its original name.
The name September comes from the Latin septem, meaning seven, since it was the seventh month of the Roman calendar, which began with March. There are 30 days in the month of September, which starts on the same day of the week as December each year but does not end on the same day of the week as any other month in the year. Birth Month: September has three birth flowers: the forget-me-not, the morning glory, and the aster. Forget-me-nots represent love and memories, asters represent love as well, and the morning glory represents unrequited love. The birthstone for the month is the sapphire.
The traditional birthstone is the opal and it symbolizes hope. Tourmaline is the modern birthstone for October. The flower for the month of October is the calendula. Another name for calendula is the pot marigold. Libra and Scorpio are the astrological signs for October. Birthdays from October 1st through the 22nd fall under the sign of Libra while birthdays that fall on the 23rd through the 31st are under the sign of Scorpio. More American Presidents were born in the month of October than any other month. They were John Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter.
• Labor Day is the most well-known holiday in September. It is observed every year on the first Monday in September.
October folklore tell us that when deer are in a gray coat in the month of October, expect a hard winter. It also says that if we have much rain in October, we will have much wind in December and if we have a warn October, we can expect a cold February.
• Native American Day is always celebrated on the 4th Friday of September.
Halloween:
• Grandparent’s Day is observed in the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
More candy is sold on October 28th than any other day of the year.
• Constitution Day, celebrating the ratification of the governing document of the United States, is observed on the 17th.
Today, nearly 35 million pounds of candy corn are produced each year. Between costumes, decoration and candy, Halloween is the second-largest commercial holiday in America. The top pumpkin-producing states - Illinois, California, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan - produce 1.31 Billion pounds of pumpkins.
Holidays in September:
• The autumn equinox, which is the traditional transition from summer into fall, takes place on or around September 22nd, depending on the year. Fun Days: • September 5th: National Cheese Pizza Day • September 9th: National Teddy Bear Day • September 16th: National Play-Doh Day • September 19th: International “Talk Like A Pirate Day” 34

Landscaping Tips for the Fall Season TURF: • Warm season turf starts to shut down and go dormant. This is a good time to schedule your pre-emergent treatment. • Cool season turf needs to be aerated and over seeded this time of year. FERTILIZING FACTS: • Fertilizing shrubs is a good idea. Choose a fertilizer that has a higher potassium in it to promote a healthy root system. When you are choosing a fertilizer for this time of year please make sure it has a lower nitrogen number because you do not want to promote growth now that will get damaged by the upcoming cold temperatures in the winter months. FALL COLOR BEDS: • Start thinking about changing out your summer annuals to winter annuals and choose colors that will compliment your landscaping. IRRIGATION: • You should plan to schedule your home irrigation systems to be drained and shut down sometime in October. FALL LEAF CLEANUP: • As the leaves begin to fall, please do not let them build up and cover any areas of the landscape or turf. When they sit on plants too long it can cause damage to those areas. 38
