CarraraMarmotec 2012 OTTIMO TRENd dI PARTECIPAZIONI excellent numbers of participants Aumentano le presenze nel settore marmi; positiva la partecipazione per le aziende delle tecnologie. A due mesi dall’evento già confermate l’85% delle adesioni. Dal 23 al 26 maggio le attività business nel complesso fieristico con un’interfaccia in Carrara Marble Weeks che si svolge in contemporanea nel centro storico.

Carrara Marmotec 2012, la 31 Fiera Internazionale di Marmi, Tecnologie e Design (www.carraramarmotec.it ) si avvicina rapidamente e tutti gli indicatori della biennale relativi alle presenze espositive, alla partecipazione di visitatori italiani e stranieri fino al programma di eventi tecnici e culturali presentano segnali positivi.

Come sempre si prevede un’edizione con riscontri in linea con l’andamento generale del settore monitorato sempre con attenzione dall’Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara che, a fine 2011, ha svolto un’indagine congiunturale nazionale sull’andamento del settore lapideo e delle tecnologie attingendo direttamente dalle aziende dei principali distretti produttivi valutazioni e previsioni su trend commerciale, investimenti, ricerca e criticità del comparto. A chiusura di anno il 22% delle aziende ha dichiarato un aumento del fatturato nel corso dell’esercizio, con una percentuale sensibilmente più alta all’interno del comprensorio apuo versiliese dove anche il comparto dei macchinari e delle tecnologie è quello che mostra migliori segnali di ripresa rispetto al resto d’Italia con circa il 50% delle aziende che ha dichiarato un fatturato in aumento rispetto all’anno precedente.

La crescita di fatturato è da attribuire principalmente alla domanda estera che nel complesso ha tenuto nonostante la crisi che ha influito anche sugli investimenti.

An increased number of natural stone companies; a good number of technology companies. At just two months from the event, 85% of companies have already confirmed their participation. From 23 to 26 May business at the exhibition centre accompanied by Carrara Marble Weeks, the cultural event to be held at the same time in the old town.

Carrara Marmotec 2012, the 31st International Fair for Marble, Technologies and Design (www.carraramarmotec.it ) is just around the corner and all aspects, including the number of exhibitors, Italian and foreign visitors and the programme of technical and cultural events, are looking very positive.

As always the fair is expected to reflect the general trends in the industry which the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara constantly monitors throughout the year.

At the end of 2011 the IMM drew up a report based on information including the assessments and forecasts on trade trends, investments, research and critical issues in the industry given by the companies themselves in the various production areas all over the country.

This report shows that 22% of companies said their turnover had increased over the year, yet the percentage was much higher in the Apuo-Versilian area where the machinery and technology sector showed the best signs of recovery compared to the rest of Italy, with approximately 50% of companies declaring an increase in turnover compared to the previous year.

This growth is to be attributed mostly to foreign demand which held strong overall despite the recession which also affected investments.

Le aziende toscane, in controtendenza, hanno dimostrato di credere nello sviluppo perché almeno il 20% di loro ha dichiarato di aver aumentato il livello degli investimenti con una percentuale superiore al resto dell’Italia.

“Carrara Marmotec 2012 si inserisce in questo quadro – annuncia Paris Mazzanti, direttore di CarraraFiere – perché, a due mesi dall’apertura, abbiamo un livello di adesioni pari all’85% rispetto al 2010 con diversi nuovi espositori sia nel settore dei marmi che in quello delle tecnologie.

L’assegnazione delle aree esterne è ormai completata con 25.000 metri quadrati di esposizione, con un aumento del 15% delle aree occupate, dove hanno un ruolo di primo piano i marmi.

Abbiamo un riscontro positivo anche dalle aziende che espongono prodotti finiti mentre il settore delle tecnologie presenterà diverse novità sia per le aziende presenti sia per i prodotti presentati. Sarà un’edizione completa – conclude Mazzanti – nella quale presenteremo il miglior panorama del lapideo e delle tecnologie, comparto importantissimo nel quale i prodotti e le aziende italiane detengono un primato di eccellenza”.

L’obiettivo è quello di confermare le presenze dell’edizione del 2010 quando gli Espositori sono stati 330 dei quali 52 stranieri, da 21 Paesi occupando una superficie di 40.000 metri quadri.

Carrara Marmotec proseguirà la tradizione di evento commerciale ai massimi livelli con un programma di convegni e seminari tecnici rivolti alla platea di espositori e visitatori che dall’appuntamento che rappresenta l’universo delle aziende toscane e liguri attende informazioni e anticipazioni che permettono di disporre di nuovi strumenti che, come il volume annuale Stone Sector, concorrono a elaborare strategie aziendali partendo dalla conoscenza del comparto e delle sue evoluzioni.

In contemporanea con Marmotec, che sarà l’appuntamento di natura commerciale e professionale, si svolgerà Carrara Marble Weeks, evento che affianca e integra la Fiera dei Marmi e delle Tecnologie con iniziative ed attività che si terranno nel centro storico di Carrara per offrire ai visitatori della fiera, ma anche ai residenti e a quanti vorranno conoscere meglio l’universo del marno e i suoi riflessi economici e sociali sul territorio, nuove opportunità di informazione e approfondimento in un contesto spettacolare che contribuirà ad avvicinare ancora di più la Fiera alla Città con un obiettivo condiviso: fare sistema e promuovere la cultura e la conoscenza del marmo che, da sempre, è simbolo di una cultura collettiva.

One - IntO the vOId CONCEPT

Ispirato dalle cave di marmo di Carrara, il progetto crea un dialogo fra le pareti di marmo monolitiche e il vuoto definito all’interno. La natura solida del progetto sta a significare stabilità e lascito, in contrasto con la natura implicitamente temporanea dell’installazione. La natura scultorea del padiglione rimanda al collegamento fisico fra la cava (solida) e ciò che è estratto (vuoto). Lo spazio vuoto interno mette in risalto il verticale piuttosto dell’orizzontale, il negativo piuttosto che il positivo, un negativo che invece diventa positivo nella panchina che segna lo spazio esterno.

Inspired by the marble quarries of Carrara, the project creates a dialogue between the monolithic marble walls and the void defined within. The solid nature of the project signifies a permanency and legacy, contrasting the inherently temporary nature of the installation. The sculptural nature of the pavilion echoes the physical connection between the quarry(solid) and the quarried(void).

The void within is carefully depicted both during the day and at night time, emphasizing the negative rather than the positive, the vertical rather than the horizontal, the tactile rather than the smooth...

THE PROJECT Il progetto consiste nella sovrapposizione di spessori di 100mm, a formare un unico blocco di marmo lungo 4.8m, largo 2.8m e alto 2.8m. La sottile variazione di colore e tessitura creata dalla disposizione orizzontale celebra la tessitura naturale delle cave di Carrara.

La forma finale è il risultato dell’alternarsi di una serie di complesse geometrie lineari, che hanno come riferimento la stratificazione artificiale generata dall’uomo nell’atto dell’estrazione del marmo. Il vuoto generato cattura la luce e genera, durante il corso della giornata, diverse chiavi lettura di un unico materiale al variare dell’incidenza dell’angolo solare. Ispirandosi al contrasto tra pieno e vuoto, la dinamica geometria del progetto incoraggia i visitatori a percepire lo spazio creato all’interno e a relazionarlo con la panca nera a voler sottolineare chiaramente la forma del vuoto.

Il tutto galleggia su una pedana in pioppo e trova nel fuoco, elemento posizionato a chiusura dell’istallazione, un segno forte e allo stesso tempo estremamente debole quasi a voler ribadire la posizione dell’uomo a confronto di tutto ciò che viene creato dalla natura.

The project consists of 100mm solid marble slabs, horizontally stacked to form an overall marble block, 4.8m long, 2.8m wide and 2.8m tall. The subtle variation in colour and texture created by this horizontal arrangement aims to celebrate the natural texture of Carrara quarries.

The project’s simple yet elegant form is generated by carving out of a series of complex linear geometries in the East-West direction, inspired by the intriguing man made strata present in the marble quarries. The linear void, formed by this simple carving operation, aims to capture dynamic light effects throughout the day, marking the changes in solar angle. Inspired by the contrast between solid and void, the dynamic internal geometry of the project encourages visitors to experience the space created within and relate it to the geometry of the black

Dopo il grande successo della prima edizione di carraramarble week, che nell’estate 2011 ha coinvolto il centro storico della città, la manifestazione organizzata da Carrara Fiere e pensata come naturale estensione di Carrara Marmotec, la fiera internazionale di marmi, tecnologie e design, sarà riproposta, ancora più ricca di eventi e di presenze. È una decisione che nasce dalle riflessioni e dalle consapevolezze nate dopo la prima edizione, l’evento così si arricchisce di una “S”, il plurale che sottolinea un prolungamento temporale perché la manifestazione, che nel 2011 era stata progettata per durare una settimana, si è protratta per oltre un mese.

L’edizione 2012, che è stata ideata con modalità di svolgimento, velocità e appuntamenti diversi, si concluderà in settembre con l’apertura di “Convivere” il festival annuale della cultura e del giornalismo, avrà una dimensione molto più ampia perché, all’interno di un cerchio che avrà il suo centro nella via Roma, comprenderà l’intera città a partire dal rinnovato Centro internazionale delle arti Plastiche fino al San Giacomo, con il centro storico, il Palazzo Binelli, l’Accademia di Belle Arti e corso Rosselli che nella prima edizione è stato l’epicentro del design.

After the great success of the first edition of carraramarble week, which involved the whole historical town centre last summer, this year it will be richer with new events and participants.

It is organized by Carrara Fiere and planned to be a natural extension of Carrara Marmotec, the international fair of marble, technologies and design. This decision was born of consideration and awareness after the first edition: the event will be presented again and will be held over like it happened last year, when it was due to last one week but was then extended to more than one month.

The 2012 edition, which has been planned in a new way with a different development and schedule, will end in September, in conjunction with the opening of the event of “Convivere”; this annual festival, dedicated to culture and journalism, will involve the whole town of Carrara: the renewed international plastic art centre, Saint James church and its historical centre, Binelli Palace, the Academy of Fine Arts, Via Rosselli, which has been the core of design of the last edition and Via Roma, the new one.

Carraramarble weeks sarà un grande teatro nel quale saranno rappresentate le eccellenze del lapideo, coinvolgendo le aziende che partecipano a Carrara Marmotec. Le aziende, e non solo loro, saranno protagoniste di un percorso che, partendo dalla fiera, troverà il suo compimento in città per proseguire un cammino che muove dalla consapevolezza di disporre di un patrimonio unico fatto di storia, qualità ed eccellenza, un patrimonio che le consente di riappropriarsi di un ruolo, quello di capitale mondiale del marmo, che non deve essere solo un titolo ma porti ad una testimonianza collettiva della capacità nuova di stare sullo scenario nazionale e internazionale. I temi sviluppati saranno ancora quelli dell’architettura che avrà una preview a Milano durante la design week di aprile con la partecipazione delle aziende del marmo ad INTERNI LEGACY con un progetto firmato dal prestigioso Studio di Architettura SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) che verrà poi presentato anche a Carrara; a Carrara si terrà anche la seconda edizione della conferenza organizzata da “INTERNI” “progettare con il marmo”, mentre in collaborazione con la rivista ‘IQD’ sarà realizzato un progetto che prevede di illuminare i palazzi storici di Carrara.

L’arte avrà il suo centro naturale nell’Accademia e interesserà ancora l’intero centro storico coinvolgendo i laboratori di scultura che esporranno opere in alcune piazze, faranno parte del circuito anche Palazzo Binelli, Palazzo Forti e il complesso di San Giacomo.

La seconda edizione di carraramarble weeks si arricchisce di novità con l’introduzione dei temi del “fashion design” e del “food” che vedrà i locali della città protagonisti del progetto “assaggiami”, circuito pensato per guidare alla riscoperta dei sapori della città a partire dalla colazione fino a tarda sera.

Via Roma, la storica strada del commercio e della socialità, sarà la protagonista del fashion design un progetto che va a riscoprire la via del passeggio cittadino: così marchi importanti come Peuterey, Mason’s, Natural Winning woman bag, sotto la direzione artistica di Riccardo Coppola e Ilaria Biggi, saranno protagonisti di istallazioni ed eventi.

Companies and many others will be protagonists of an event which starts from the fair and reaches its high point in the town. But this is not the only target because the town, aware of its magnificent cultural and historic heritage, wants to regain possession of its role of world capital of marble, in order to be able to cope with the national and international scene.

Architecture will be one of the main topics and there will be a preview during the April design week of Milan, with the participation of marble companies at INTERNI LEGACY and a project signed by the prestigious Architecture Studio SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), which will be presented in Carrara too; in Carrara there will also be the second edition of the conference “design with marble”, organized by “INTERNI” magazine, while a project in collaboration with the ‘IQD’ magazine will provide palace lighting in Carrara historical centre.

Art will have its natural centre in the Academy but will involve the whole historical centre (including Binelli Palace, Forti Palace and St James parish), together with sculpture workshops, which will exhibit some of their works of art in the squares. The second edition of carraramarble weeks will be richer of novelties, introducing new topics such as “fashion design” and “food”; the last one will see restaurants and bars as protagonists of the “try me” project, which will give you the possibility of discovering the flavours of the town, from breakfast to late night snacks. Via Roma, the historic commercial and social centre of the town, will be the protagonist of “fashion design”, a project which will rediscover the high street of the town: under the artistic direction of Riccardo Coppola and Ilaria Biggi, important brands such as Peuterey, Mason’s and Natural Winning woman bag will be protagonists of art installations and events.

L’area toscana soffre la crisi meno del resto d’Italia e le aziende specializzate in tecnologia prevedono aumento del fatturato.

The Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara conducted its analysis throughout Italy with the direct help of the companies themselves. Tuscany is feeling the recession less than the rest of Italy and companies specialized in technology are actually expecting an increase in sales.

L’internazionale Marmi e Macchine ha presentato agli operatori e alla stampa i risultati di un’indagine congiunturale svolta alla fine del 2011 per raccogliere le valutazioni di delle aziende del settore del marmo, delle tecnologie e dei settori correlati per comprendere, attraverso le dichiarazioni dei diretti interessati, le dinamiche in atto e i riflessi della crisi sulle aziende e, più in generale sul comparto che rappresenta un segmento importante del Made in Italy.

The Internazionale Marmi e Macchine has presented the results of the analysis conducted at the end of 2011 to gather the opinions of companies involved in the stone, technology and related industries so as to understand the trends underway, the repercussions of the recession on the companies and on the industry in general which is an important Italian industry.

“We have brought the results out earlier than usual this year because the situation is particularly complex and we want companies as well as associations and institutions to be in a position to make their own assessments of such a difficult year as 2011 by accessing this information – said the IMM Chairman when presenting the work – which also contains indications for reflection for 2012.

L’analisi è stata illustrata nei dettagli da Manuela Gussoni come risultato di un lavoro complesso che tiene conto di un quadro generale nazionale e locale nel quale emerge che l’andamento del fatturato vendite del comprensorio apuoversiliese abbia sofferto meno nel corso del 2011 rispetto al resto d’Italia.

Infatti, la percentuale di aziende che hanno dichiarato un aumento del fatturato è complessivamente del 22% ma è sensibilmente più alta all’interno del comprensorio rispetto al resto del paese per tutti i settori analizzati.

Il comparto dei macchinari e delle tecnologie comprensoriale, in particolare, è quello che mostra segnali di ripresa poiché quasi metà delle aziende ha dichiarato un fatturato in aumento rispetto al 2010 (come riportato nel grafico che segue dove le percentuali sono calcolate sul totale delle risposte).

In fact, nationwide 22% of companies declared an increase in their sales while in the Apuo-Versilian district a much higher percentage declared an increase in all the sectors taken into consideration.

The machinery and technology sector in the district in particular showed signs of recovery as almost half the companies said sales increased compared to 2010 (as shown in the graph below where the percentages are calculated out of the total responses).

L’impatto della crisi economica ha influito pesantemente sugli investimenti delle aziende nel 2011 con un saldo negativo per tutti i settori ma il comprensorio apuoversiliese sembra essere quello che ha tagliato di meno la voce investimenti con il 20% che li dichiara in aumento contro il 14% del resto d’Italia.

Alle aziende intervistate è stata posta anche una domanda specifica relativa alla realizzazione di progetti di cooperazione nel corso del 2011 e la propensione ad investire nel 2012; dalle risposte emerge una propensione forte ad investire, anche per il futuro, da parte delle aziende che hanno partecipato a progetti comuni e reti d’impresa. Il risultato sottolinea l’importanza della strategia di rete nella crescita del settore, in quanto l’attività cooperativa comporta una serie di vantaggi legati alla condivisione dei costi e del rischio di processi innovativi particolarmente onerosi per singole aziende con la realizzazione di economie di scala attraverso accordi di co-produzione o con l’acquisizione di conoscenze complementari.

Investments: forecast reduction in all sectors.

The impact of the economic crisis heavily affected company investments in 2011 with a negative balance for all sectors. The Apuo-Versilian district, however, seems to have cut back on investments the least, with 20% of companies declaring that they increased their investments compared to 14% in the rest of Italy.

The companies interviewed were asked a specific question as to what joint projects they had carried out in 2011 and their intention to invest in 2012. The responses showed a strong intention to invest, in the future too, on the part of companies that took part in joint projects and company networks. The result emphasises the importance of the network strategy for growth in the industry as working together brings a series of advantages involving the sharing of costs and the risk of innovative processes which are particularly expensive for individual companies, with the creation of scale economies by co-production agreements or the acquisition of complementary knowledge and skills.

Stabilità nell’occupazione: l’80% delle aziende manterrà il numero degli addetti.

La ricerca ha dedicato particolare attenzione al mercato del lavoro rilevando che il 18% degli intervistati ha effettuato nel 2011 almeno una nuova assunzione, anche temporanea. Il comparto più attivo è quello dei macchinari e delle tecnologie dove ogni azienda ha avuto in media un nuovo addetto. Le previsioni per il 2012 però non sembrano essere particolarmente positive per la crescita occupazionale dei settori analizzati in quanto l’80% delle aziende intervistate non intende modificare il numero dei dipendenti.

La ricerca e l’innovazione nel triennio 2009-2011 Molto interessante il risultato delle risposte fornite in relazione all’innovazione perché il 63% delle aziende ha risposto che nel triennio 2009-2011 ha introdotto almeno una innovazione di prodotto/servizio o di processo considerando che alcune potrebbero essere state a costo zero. La percentuale è ottima se si considera che il processo si è realizzato in anni molto difficili.

I settori più propensi all’innovazione sono risultati quelli dei macchinari, delle tecnologie e collaterali, dove circa l’80% delle aziende ha introdotto almeno una novità.

Le aziende del comprensorio apuo-versiliese risultano però meno propense ad investire in innovazione rispetto a quelle che operano nel resto di Italia come testimonia una spesa media in ricerca e sviluppo tendenzialmente più bassa.

Le prospettive per il 2012: possibile una contrazione della produzione.

La domanda che comportava le risposte più difficili e complesse era quella relativa alle previsioni degli operatori rispetto alla produzione nel primo semestre del 2012. le valutazioni mostrano un sostanziale pessimismo sia per la tendenza della produzione del settore sia per l’azienda interessata. Anche in questo caso però il comprensorio Apuo-Versiliese risulta tendenzialmente meno pessimista rispetto al resto del paese con le aziende del comparto dei macchinari e tecnologie che prevedono un aumento della produzione che sopravanzano di circa 24 punti percentuali quelle che ne prevedono una diminuzione.

Stability in employment: 80% of companies will keep the same number of workers.

Particular attention was given to the labour market and research revealed that 18% of those interviewed employed at least one new person in 2011, whether temporary or permanent. The most active sector was the machinery and technology sector where every company took on an average one new worker. The outlook for 2012, though, does not seem as positive in terms of a growth in employment as 80% of companies interviewed said they did not intend to change the number of employees.

Research and innovation over the threeyear period 2009-2011 What is very interesting is the result of the responses given as regards innovation.

63% of companies said they had introduced at least one product, service or process innovation in the three-year period 20092011. Some may have been at zero cost yet the percentage is excellent if we consider that we are talking about very difficult years.

The sectors more inclined to make innovation are the machinery, technology and related industries where approximately 80% of companies introduced at least one new feature.

Companies in the Apuo-Versilian district proved, however, to be the least inclined to invest compared to the rest of Italy as is shown by the average spending in research and development which tends to be lower.

Prospects for 2012: possible reduction in production.

The most difficult question concerned companies’ forecasts for production over the first six months of 2012. The responses substantially show pessimism both in terms of production figures for the industry as a whole and the individual companies. Once again the Apuo-Versilian district tends to be less pessimistic compared to the rest of the country with around 44% of machinery and technology companies foreseeing an increase in production compared to around just 24% for those that foresee a reduction.

PROVINCIA dI MASSA CARRARA E IMM VALUTANO L’INdICE dI PERFORMANCE PROVINCIALE PER IL LAPIdEO PROVINCE OF MASSA CARRARA ANd IMM ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PROVINCE IN TERMS OF THE STONE INdUSTRY La provincia di Massa-Carrara e IMM valuteranno congiuntamente realizzando un progetto messo a punto appositamente, la performance del comparto lapideo provinciale con un’attenzione particolare agli aspetti occupazionali.

Attraverso questa nuova iniziativa, supportata dalla Regione Toscana, sarà valutata, in un’ottica di benchmark con le altre province del distretto (Lucca e La Spezia) sarà valutata la performance del comparto lapideo di Massa-Carrara sulla base di una serie di indicatori che vanno dalla produttività media aziendale, alla spesa media in attività di ricerca e sviluppo. Ma soprattutto sarà dedicato un focus particolare ad aspetti connessi con la performance occupazionale calcolando indicatori come la percentuale di aziende che hanno effettuato una nuova assunzione nell’ultimo anno o la variazione percentuale di dipendenti a tempo indeterminato.

Gli indicatori saranno suddivisi in sei aree tematiche: performance occupazionale, economicità aziendale, innovatività, crescita, performance internazionale e responsabilità sociale. Per ognuna di queste aree e per ciascuna provincia del distretto, sarà calcolato un punteggio sintetico la cui media ci fornirà un indice di performance provinciale del settore lapideo (IPPL).

In via sperimentale i risultati del progetto costituiranno una guida utile per la programmazione delle politiche di tipo economico e sociale sui livelli provinciali e forniranno alle aziende elementi di riflessione sui punti di forza e di debolezza che caratterizzano il distretto, sui fattori di competitività e sulle opportunità di investimento.

The province of Massa-Carrara and IMM will be working together on a specific project to assess the performance of the stone industry in the province with particular attention to employment.

Through a process of benchmarking the province will be compared to the other provinces in the stone business district (Lucca and La Spezia) based on a series of indicators ranging from the average company productivity to the average spending in research and development establishing benchmarks.

Above all the focus will be on aspects concerned with employment, calculating indicators such as the percentage of companies that have employed new staff over the past year and the percentage variation of employees with permanent contracts.

The indicators will be divided into six areas: employment performance, company efficiency, innovation, growth, international performance and social responsibility. Points will be given for each of these areas in each province of the district and the average will provide a provincial performance index for the stone industry (IPPL).

In its experimental stages the results of the project will serve as a useful guide for planning economic and social policies in the provinces and will provide companies with information as to the strengths and weaknesses of the district, factors determining competitiveness and investment opportunities.

L’ultima edizione del censimento è stata realizzata nel 2000 quando, grazie ad un importante lavoro di rilevazione face-to-face, erano state censite 1093 aziende nelle quali operavano 6622 addetti.

Per il censimento 2012 sono state introdotte alcune novità per facilitare la partecipazione: il questionario sarà inviato per posta elettronica alle aziende che, dal registro delle imprese della Camera di Commercio, risultano operative nell’ambito del settore lapideo per codice attività (Ateco).

Sarà possibile compilare il questionario direttamente on-line grazie ad un processo di semplificazione delle domande che riduce al minimo il tempo necessario alla compilazione.

Le aziende che lo preferiranno potranno compilare il questionario in formato cartaceo oppure essere intervistate per via telefonica o personalmente dai rilevatori inviati dall’Internazionale Marmi e Macchine.

Le aziende che, per motivi doversi, non riceveranno il questionario potranno comunicarlo all’indirizzo stats@immcarrara.it per essere immediatamente inserite negli elenchi ufficiali.

Il censimento servirà a contare le aziende del distretto, ma soprattutto a raccogliere le informazioni che costituiscono il punto di partenza per individuare le adeguate politiche e azioni di sviluppo.

Le informazioni fornite saranno naturalmente tutelate dalle disposizioni di legge in materia di segreto statistico e sottoposte alla normativa vigente sulla protezione dei dati.

The last survey took place in 2000 when, thanks to a lot of hard work with face-to-face interviews, 1093 companies with 6622 employees were surveyed.

Originally the translucency effects, the main characteristic of these products, were used to enhance interiors of public spaces, but only small surface areas.

Bars, casinos, shopping centres, etc. are mostly where marble-glass products have been used and architects, constantly looking for special effects able to enhance these environments, have certainly not lacked creativity in the combination of colours, the integration of forms and back lighting systems.

Since they first appeared on the market, these products were particularly precious and any extensive use was avoided due to potentially very high costs.

It has taken time for the products to progress from being niche market products for luxury interiors to their use on larger surface areas, yet the results achieved seem somewhat comforting if it is true that today large buildings (thousands of square metres) can be covered with slabs of marble-glass laminates.

Among the most recent examples that demonstrate the products’ new reliability, what is very impressive is the “Library Building” on the Academic & Administration Campus of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, designed by HO+K in Saudi Arabia.

The exterior casing is made of glass and white Estremoz marble (Portugal)-laminated slabs supported by a metal frame backing that they are attached to by means of specially designed anchoring devices.

The external appearance of a monolithic volume contrasts with an interior full of chiaro scuro effects and varying degrees of luminous intensity which is constantly iridescent during the day; while at night the marble wall comes alive and shows the vitality of its veins and the degrees of opaqueness of its white colour.

Marmisti palestinesi interessati a collaborare con Carrara Delegazione in visita all’IMM per valutare la possibilità di partecipare a Carrara Marmotec; incontro con i vertici del Consorzio Carrara Export.

Si è conclusa con un incontro nella sede dell’Internazionale Marmi e Macchine la visita di una delegazione ufficiale palestinese interessata ad attivare nuovi rapporti tecnici e commerciali con Carrara e le aziende che operano nel settore del marmo e delle tecnologie.

Il gruppo era composto da presidente dell’ Union of Stone & Marble in Palestine Suhbi Thawabtih, accompagnato da Maher Hushaysh in rappresentanza del Palestine Stone Export Consortium e da Charles Steel, Consigliere del rappresentante del Quartetto a Gerusalemme, Tony Blair.

Una delegazione annunciata dal Consolato generale d’Italia a Gerusalemme e fortemente rappresentativa considerato che il “Quartetto” comprende nazioni e organismi internazionali e sovranazionali coinvolti nella mediazione del processo di pace nel conflitto israelo-palestinese: gli Stati Uniti, la Russia, l’Unione europea e Nazioni Unite che hanno designato Tony Blair come inviato speciale per contribuire, anche con stanziamenti, alla pacificazione del Medio Oriente costruendo un apparato economico e produttivo.

Scopo della visita, che ha avuto un primo incontro ufficiale nella sede della Camera di Commercio, è quello di presentare la produzione delle imprese palestinesi associate avviare una riflessione su possibili forme di collaborazione incontrando anche istituzioni e organizzazioni che operano nel settore lapideo.

Tappa obbligata è stata perciò l’Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara nella cui sede il gruppo si è recato per illustrare il processo in atto che può essere attuato attraverso la collaborazione e gli scambi di informazioni che consentono di portare alla distribuzione dei prodotti lapidei palestinesi. Un momento di promozione importante per i prodotti lapidei palestinesi può essere rappresentato da una partecipazione a Carrara Marmotec, che si svolgerà dal 23 al 26 maggio, sia con uno spazio espositivo sia con una delegazione ufficiale, ipotesi che gli ospiti valuteranno

attentamente. Molto vivo l’interesse a collaborare con IMM come ha sottolineato il presidente Suhbi Thawabth “costruendo rapporti con il mondo dell’università e della ricerca oltre che con l’IMM considerata la necessità di produrre secondo i protocolli e gli standard accettati dal mercato europeo che rappresenta un’area di sbocco primaria”.

Proprio in relazione a queste azioni si è svolto, nella stessa sede, l’incontro ufficiale tra il Consorzio Carrara Export ed il Consorzio Export del Lapideo Palestinese, ultimo di una lunga serie di appuntamenti e contatti che si protraggono da quasi due anni: è proprio nel C.C.E. e nelle sue aziende, infatti, che l’Unione Palestinese sembra aver individuato il partner ideale per il programma di collaborazione commerciale di cui sopra.

L’intesa, per la quale l’ufficio del Carrara Export e quello del Quartetto di Tony Blair sono al lavoro congiuntamente da mesi, è nata dal riconoscimento dell’unità di intenti nonché delle affinità strutturali e di business tra le due organizzazioni; e si auspica porti ad un vero e proprio Agreement ufficiale tra le parti. Pertanto “l’incontro - ha detto Sabrina Corsi, presidente del Carrara Export al termine del meeting – si è rivelato quanto mai utile come conferma della già avviata pianificazione di partenariato strategico con il Consorzio dei marmisti palestinesi; anche per questo motivo abbiamo voluto che ne fosse sede proprio il nostro centro fieristico, a conferma della costante linea sinergica con Carrarafiere e IMM mirando ciò ad un’operazione che possa comportare reali opportunità ed il mutuo vantaggio dei partner stranieri, delle nostra aziende consorziate e del territorio tutto.

Al termine degli incontri il gruppo si è intrattenuto a lungo nella Marmoteca dell’Internazionale Marmi e Macchine dove Paola Blasi, responsabile di ISICENTRY l’ufficio specializzato nel fornire tutte le informazioni che riguardano il settore lapideo internazionale, ha illustrato ( nella foto) la struttura e fornito informazioni anche su singoli materiali.

Palestinian Marble industry interested in working with Carrara A delegation visits IMM to look into the possibility of taking part in Carrara Marmotec; meeting with the managers of the Carrara Export Consortium.

The official visit from a Palestinian delegation interested in setting up new technical and trade relations with Carrara and companies operating in the marble and related technology industry came to an end with a meeting at IMM’s head offices.

The delegation included the Chairman of the Union of Stone & Marble in Palestine, Suhbi Thawabtih, together with Maher Hushaysh representing the Palestine Stone Export Consortium and Charles Steel, advisor to the Quartet representative in Jerusalem, Tony Blair.

A delegation announced by the General Consulate of Italy in Jerusalem and extremely representative considering that the Quartet includes nations and international and supranational entities involved in mediating the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Russia, who have appointed Tony Blair as their special envoy to help the peace process by setting up an economic and productive apparatus.

The aim of the visit, the first official meeting of which took place at the Chamber of Commerce, was to present the Palestinian companies’ products and start discussing possible forms of cooperation by meeting with institutions and organisations operating in the stone industry.

The delegation then of course met with representatives from the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara at the company’s head offices to present the Palestinian industry and discuss possible working relationships and the sharing of information. An important opportunity for the promotion of Palestinian natural stone products may be their participation in Carrara Marmotec, due to be held from 23 to 26 May, with both a stand and an official delegation which the delegation are now considering carefully. There is a very keen interest in working with the IMM, as emphasized by the Chairman Suhbi Thawabth “building relations with academia and

research as well as with the IMM is necessary in order to make production comply with the protocols and standards accepted by the European market which is prime for us”.

With regard to this, the official meeting between the Carrara Export Consortium and the Union of Stone & Marble in Palestine also took place in the offices. This was the last of a series of appointments and meetings which have been going on over the last two years. It is in fact the Carrara Export Consortium and its companies that the Palestinian Union has chosen as its ideal partners for the marketing plan. The agreement, which the Carrara Export office and Tony Blair’s Quartet have been working together on for months now, stemmed from the recognition of the common intent and the structural and business similarities between the two organisations.

It is hoped that there will soon be an official agreement between the parties. “The meeting - said Sabrina Corsi, Chairman of Carrara Export – was very useful to consolidate the strategic relations already underway with the Union of Stone & Marble in Palestine; this is one of the reasons why we wanted our exhibition centre to host it, thereby confirming the constant synergy with CarraraFiere and IMM, aiming at a plan which may bring real opportunities to the mutual advantage of the foreign partners, our member companies and the entire area.

At the end of the meeting the group spent a long time at the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine’s marble library where Paola Blasi, head of ISICENTRY, the office responsible for providing comprehensive information on the international stone industry, showed ( see photo) them around and gave them information on the individual materials.
