Merging of classes continue without student evaluation Zhen Lee N. Ballard

SG President and SR Arnold-John Bulanadi was disappointed to the administration for having failed to conduct a semestral student evaluation regarding the merging of classes despite the fact that the Board of Regents (BOR) suggested that there should be an evaluation immediately after the first semester to determine its viability in the academe. “We just have to wait for the result of the evaluation of every department/college which will be presented to the BOR meeting on December 5,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Adelaida Gines. Dr. Gines stated that the large class, as what she prefers

to call the program, is primarily a research for innovation on pedagogical approach and not a result of PNU budget crisis. She also said that the future teachers need to be exposed to large classes because this is a reality which awaits them in the public school system. As part of the evaluation, the administration must have met the following conditions – conducive classrooms, space for teaching innovative instructional techniques/ strategies (i.e. use of technology), and only competent or quality faculty members shall handle large classes. According to Bulanadi, aside from these conditions, the evaluation from the faculty and students must be conducted in order to see the pros and cons of the program, to know if they have met the main objectives and to make use of the things that work and to abolish the things that did not work.

“Yung effects ng merging of classes ay hindi akma sa objectives, parang nagiging bagong problema lang kasi hindi na natututo at madalas nagdadaldalan na lang ang mga estudyante. Tapos wala ring matibay na batayan ng grades ang mga prof dahil halos di kami makilala sa sobrang dami namin at ang tanging nagiging batayan na lang nila ay ang finals na hindi naman namin sigurado kung maipapasa dahil wala naman kaming

natutunan,” shared by some first year students under merged classes.
