Becca Dinsdale Pisgah Forest Elementary - Third Grade I grew up in Canton, Ohio and went to Miami University in Ohio. I was a substitute teacher and also taught preschool in Ohio before moving to Lexington, N.C., where I taught both 5th and 3rd grades. When we first moved to Transylvania County, I taught 4th grade at Rosman Elementary, then I took several years off from teaching when my children were young. I was a Teacher Assistant at PFE last year, and I’m excited to be teaching again this year. I loved school as a child, and I think I always wanted to teach. I remember my elementary school being such a comfortable, welcoming place that I looked forward to going to, and I want all children to feel that way about school. I am married to Bob Dinsdale, and we have two children – Jack, who will be in third grade, and Paige, who will be in first grade. We have a cat and a dog. I love to read, and I joined a book group so I would be forced to read books that I wouldn’t normally pick. I am terrible at crafts, but I like to cook and eat any kind of ethnic food. I love to read, and I also like to cook and run (so I can eat what I cook!) and spend time with my family. I am really looking forward to teaching at PFE this year! Carolyn Smith Pisgah Forest Elementary – Music Carolyn Smith grew up in Lancaster, Ohio, where her parents still live. Majoring in music education with a focus on piano instruction, she attended Eastern Kentucky University beginning in 1990, where she earned both a bachelor’s and master’s in music education. Her first teaching position was at Jackson City Schools, in Jackson, Ky., as the kindergarten through twelfth grade music, band and chorus teacher. In 1999, she moved to Brevard to teach at Brevard Academy charter school, where she began the first band and chorus program. In 2004 she moved to teach band at Rosman Middle and High School, where she achieved National Board Certification in 2009 as well as the Rosman High School Teacher of the Year. Her last year at Rosman, she was awarded the Lillian Cothran Golden Apple Teacher Award. Mrs. Smith spent the 2013-2014 school year at Glen Arden Elementary in Buncombe County, but is pleased to once again be back in Transylvania County as the music teacher at Pisgah Forest Elementary School. Mrs. Smith’s father and grandmother were both music teachers in Ohio, and she has been involved in piano studies and other areas of music study since the age of four. She has taught many years of private piano lessons as well as many other band instruments, and continues to do so. Knowing she wanted to be a music teacher from an early age, Mrs. Smith constantly worked hard to be an accomplished pianist and instrumentalist to reach that goal. She is married to Rivers Smith, who has recently accepted the position as chorus teacher at Brevard High School. Married to Mr. Smith for eleven years, she has two children, Rhea Jones, who is starting in ninth grade at BMS, and Joe Smith, a soon-to-be fifth grader at Pisgah Forest Elementary. Rounding out the family is Maggie, the shaggy two-year old Labradoodle that currently resides on the family’s couch as often as she can. Mrs. Smith is an avid reader, loves to knit, and enjoys boating on her pontoon with her family at Lake Keowee, S.C. Her favorite movie is The Princess Bride, (inconceivable!), and her favorite music playlist includes everything from Eric Whitacre to Eminem. I’m so glad to be back in Transylvania County. I’m home! Cassondra Green Rosman Middle School – Seventh Grade Math I’m originally from Rosman. I graduated from Rosman High School in 2009. I then attended Western Carolina University, where I graduated in 2013. This past year, I taught middle school in Jackson County. I come from a family of educators. I have always wanted to teach. I remember teaching my stuffed animals as a child. There is nothing else I can remember wanting to be. I chose math and science as my specializations because I love and have always loved science. I love learning how things work. I also chose math because I love a challenge and for a lot of students math is a challenge. I live by myself with my beautiful 4-monthold puppy, Luna. I have a younger sister who is in college, and a brother who is a junior in high school. I love the color green, it my favorite color and last name! My favorite movies are “Toy Story,” “Grease,” and “She’s The Man.” As far as music, I listen to a little bit of everything. I love to travel. My goal is to travel to all 50 states. I enjoy spending time with my family, watching Clemson football or playing with my puppy, Luna.
Elizabeth A. Privette Brevard Elementary School I was born in Chicago, Ill., but I spent most of my formative years in Indiana. I received my teaching degree in special education from Indiana State University. My previous teaching assignment was in Leonardtown, Md., where I taught special education at Chopticon High School. While following my husband in his military career, I have taught in seven different states and two foreign countries. During my first semester in college I did an observation in a special education classroom in an elementary school. There I discovered I had a passion for working with kids, especially those with special needs. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for over thirty years. I have two adult sons. The oldest, Nick, lives in Madison, Ind., and my youngest, Jeff, lives in Durham, N.C. We have no pets other than what nature provides. I love potatoes: fried, baked, mashed, you name it I like it. No day is a good day without chocolate. A hot cup of tea and a good book is a perfect way to spend leisure time. Favorite colors are red, white, and blue. I have several hobbies. I sew, knit, and draw/paint, read all likes of books. I enjoy ice skating, hiking and kayaking. Erika Kristin Mayhew Pisgah Elementary School – Third Grade I am from Shelby, N.C. I graduated from Shelby High School in 2003. Upon graduation, I attended Western Carolina University. While at WCU, I majored in elementary education and maintained a focus in psychology. Also at WCU, I added on my reading licensure for grades K-12. I graduated from Western in May 2007 and accepted my first teaching job, teaching fourth grade, in Statesville in the fall of 2007. After one year of teaching, I decided to obtain my master’s in elementary education at night at the Hickory Metro Center (via Appalachian State University). I took a fourth grade teaching position in Hickory to make my travel lighter while attending school during the evenings. After two years of teaching in Hickory and going to school at night (and graduating with my master’s in 2010), I decided to move closer to my hometown where I took another fourth grade teaching position on the side of Hickory closest to Shelby. While in this position I only taught fourth grade math, science, and writing. Finally, in spring 2011, I landed a teaching position in my hometown at Washington Elementary School, again teaching fourth grade. In the summer of 2012, my principal asked me to loop up with my students to fifth grade. I did as asked and taught all subjects in the fifth grade during the 2012-13 school year. In May 2013, I graduated with my principal’s certificate. During the 2013-14 school year, I remained in the fifth grade but only taught mathematics. As a child I always taught my baby dolls. I’ve known since I was little that I wanted to be a teacher. My fourth grade teacher encouraged my dream of becoming a teacher by building a close relationship with our class and by encouraging me both inside and outside of the classroom. During my first semester of college I joined a teaching organization at Western Carolina University called C.H.I.L.D. This club led me down the elementary level of education. My mother and father live on a small manmade lake in Shelby, Moss Lake. My father is retired and enjoys golfing four to five times a week. My mother works for the Cleveland County School System in the payroll department. She enjoys reading and walking during her free time. I have a half-sister who resides in Gastonia, N.C. with her husband and two boys. My nephews are great academic students and highly involved in athletics. I decided to move to Henderson County as my boyfriend is in law enforcement and works in the area. I also have several friends from WCU who live in the surrounding area. My boyfriend and I love anything outdoors - mountain bike riding, hiking, kayaking, swimming, picnicking, fishing, trapping, etc. We have a mini-farm – two dogs, 15 chickens and 22 rabbits. My favorite past time is running and mountain bike riding. I also love researching math strategies. My favorite food is Mexican and my favorite music is country and oldies. I enjoy reading children’s books. Two of my favorites are “Soft Rain” and “Love, Ruby Lavender.” My favorite teaching quote is - “A lack of learning in any particular situation should first be interpreted as a result of inappropriate or insufficient use of teaching strategy, rather that inability on the part of the learner.” – Marc Gold: “Did I Say That,” 1980. My favorite Dr. Seuss quote is - “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ― Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!” I am super excited to be teaching third grade at Pisgah Elementary School. I can’t wait to work alongside my students, parents, community and colleagues to build a classroom full of energy, learning, and compassion!
Grayson Gregory Barton Rosman Middle and High School – Choir I was born and raised in the small town of Cadillac, Mich., and attended McBain Public High School. I attended Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Mich., and graduated with a K-12 music education degree. I have worked in the East Grand Rapids and Dearborn school districts teaching choir and general music. I began teaching guitar and piano lessons in high school. I realized early on that I enjoyed helping students progress, obtain skills, and develop a love and appreciation for music. My favorite class in school was music, and I wanted to pass that passion along to future generations. Music is an enjoyable, mind-stimulating activity that helped me focus in school. I also found the connection between music, community, and quality of life to be profound. Some of the most meaningful experiences of my life have been participating in music ensembles, especially high school and collegiate groups. One of my newfound passions is conducting, and I’m looking forward to serving the students and community of Rosman. Most all of my family resides in Michigan, although I do have relatives across the country. I personally do not have any pets, although I grew up on a farm with many animals. Music: As far as genres go, I love rock (classic and modern), Celtic, choral, blues, folk, singer/songwriter, classical (especially medieval, renaissance, and romantic), bluegrass, piano, reggae, solo guitar, roots, and more. I listen to a little bit of everything! Food: I love any and all food, and I love trying new things. I do enjoy movies, especially comedies and documentaries. When I am not playing music, I enjoy kayaking, running, biking, swimming, motorcycling, exercising, watching movies, going to concerts, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with family and friends. I’m very excited to begin the school year in Rosman. Go Tigers! Heather Lynne Finch TC Henderson Elementary – Library Media Specialist I am from Florida originally but have lived all over the country. I went to Simmons College in Boston, Mass. and Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where I finished with a B.A. in visual arts. I earned a master’s degree in library and information science from Kent State University. I have worked as a reference librarian in public libraries in Palm Beach County, Fla., and for the past 11 years in elementary and high school libraries in Birmingham, Ala. I moved to Asheville in 2012 and worked as a substitute and a teacher’s assistant. I love working with children, reading, and getting kids excited about reading! I believe that empowered with the ability to find and utilize information, children can explore their world and find their passions. Reading is key! I love the look on the faces of early readers when they finish reading a book! They have sparkle and excitement and that’s what it’s all about! I am so happy to be in a position where I can aid classroom teachers and enhance children’s education as another branch of the learning tree! I have a terrific 15-year-old son, Piper, who is the love of my life. No pets right now but highly considering a dog. I adore anything with goat cheese or sun dried tomatoes on it. If those ingredients are on a menu I will order it! I love all kinds of music and find it essential to my daily life. My favorite band is Phish, who I will travel anywhere to see. My all-time favorite children’s author is Chris Van Allsburg (but there are so many great ones!). My favorite color changes with moods and seasons – all colors are beautiful! I make dresses and quilts, love to paint and read, and spend time outside appreciating our universe for all of its natural splendor. I feel very fortunate and excited to be working at TC Henderson Elementary this year. I look forward to bringing a positive energy and being a part of this wonderful caring school! Jenita Pace Brevard High School School Counselor I’m originally from Minnesota (which yes, is on the Canadian border, but no, I am not remotely Canadian). I went first to Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C., to study the Bible. I met my husband there, who then followed me back to Minnesota for seven years. After he got laid off, I agreed to follow him down here to North Carolina, where I attended WCU to get my master’s in school counseling. Recently, I was working at Haywood

Jenita Pace (continued) Early College but previous to that I was working at a high school in Minnesota. I’ve also taught horseback riding on the side. I love students, especially high schoolaged students. When I taught riding, I found out how much I enjoyed working with kids of all ages. I chose counseling because I found that I really enjoy helping people in all aspects of their life. (I also easily ruled out teaching math because I am hopelessly flawed at math). I have one dog, a one-year-old Shih Tzu named Chewbacca. I have one son, Carter, who is ten. He loves life and has a great sense of humor. I have one husband, Tim (who we call Timmer). Timmer is a pastoral intern at Grace Community Church in Mills River. It’s hard to capture our family life into words but I can say that we laugh a lot, dance around the house when a good song comes on, build bonfires in the summer in our backyard, and we occasionally enjoy a harmless prank on each other. Home is good. I love sushi, watermelon and doughnuts (but not together). I listen to all kinds of music, except rap; but I guess Eminem is okay. My favorite groups include Imagine Dragons, One Republic, and I also enjoy Brandon Heath, Brooks and Dunn and Toby Mac. Reading is fun again now that I am past being in grad school. I really enjoy true crime books or anything by C.S. Lewis. I am a huge fan of the now deceased Chris Farley and “Tommy Boy” is my all-time favorite. The old SNL episodes are always worth watching and quoting. I am very much into “The Office” and find it therapeutic after a long day at work. Call it nerdy, but I am into strategy games like Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, and play cards. I enjoy horseback riding but currently am horseless. Having a son, my activities tend to be watching his sports activities, but I also enjoy reading, writing, and playing “Just Dance” on the Wii. A few random facts about me. •I seem to have horrible luck when I travel: four different road trips included blown tires, getting stuck in a riot in Paris, being on a plane that had paneling fall apart while in flight, etc. But I have been to 48 of the 50 states. •In my previous job at the early college I pulled an annual Christmas prank, some of which have included me jumping out of a wrapped gift as an elf and providing a 12-foot Christmas tree in a co-worker’s office. I am very excited to be joining the staff at Brevard High School! Jonathan Russell Brevard High School – Exceptional Children’s Education Program I grew up in Hendersonville, graduated from Hendersonville High, went to college at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. Relevant experience includes working in group home settings, in a psychiatric facility for young people, and at a private boarding school for young people with Asperger’s, autism and other learning differences. I began at the private boarding school working in the dorm and eventually moved to a position that had me working closely with parents and teachers to develop behavior and learning plans for the students. I am fulfilled when helping set young people up for success. I have a wonderfully supportive and intelligent wife, three young children (8, 6, and 4) a Jack Russell Terrier and a fat housecat. I love Mexican and Chinese food. I listen primarily to sacred music though a good show tune is usually not far from my lips. I like to read thrillers and suspense novels but prefer movies of a more inspirational
nature. I love sports. My favorite is baseball and I coach my son’s little league team. We won the 7year-old state championship last year and just recently lost the 8-year-old championship game by one run. I enjoy mentoring other young people. It is rare for my house to be void of “extra” children on the weekends because I want to impact as many young people as I can. I am super excited about joining the Brevard High family, though being a Tar Heel fan, it will be an adjustment cheering for Blue Devils. But I’ll make the adjustment and be the number one fan. Justin Ausburn Brevard Middle School I was born and raised in Brevard, and left to attend Appalachian State University as an N.C. Teaching Fellow. I worked as a summer camp director for a couple of years before getting a teaching assistant position at Davidson River School, which is what led me to my current teaching position at BMS. In high school, many of my teachers steered me towards the teaching profession, and since most of them were science teachers and science was my favorite subject I naturally chose to be a science teacher. I love learning about the world around us and understanding how everything is put together. I come from a big extended family and we still try to get together several times a month for big family dinners and game nights. My favorite music ranges from Appalachian ballads to modern folk music, with my favorite band being the Avett Brothers. Recently I find myself reading lots of nonfiction, mainly on history and woodworking. I spend most of my free time either out in the woods exploring or in my workshop restoring vintage tools. Katie Wanson Brevard Middle School I am originally from a small town in Central Pennsylvania, and I attended the University of Pittsburgh for undergrad and graduate school (Go Panthers!). For the past three years I have lived in Northern Virginia, teaching sixth grade Language Arts at Rippon Middle School for a year and 10th and 12th grade English at Patriot High School for two years From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I’ve always loved learning and passing knowledge onto others. I took an interest in English as I entered high school, and as I pursued a bachelor’s degree in fiction writing, I knew English education was where I should be. I have the most loving and supportive parents and an older brother named Joe, who teaches social studies in Erie, Pa. I’m engaged to an incredible man named Tim and we have an adorable dog named Django. I cannot POSSIBLY choose my favorite foods because I really love EVERYTHING! There are a few things I won’t eat, though, like mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, onions, and goat cheese. I listen to a lot of country, alternative rock, and some of the top 40 artists, and watch movies ALL of the time. I am particularly interested in documentaries, rom-coms, thrillers, and Disney movies. As for books...well, I’m an English teacher, so I really enjoy them all. Recently I’ve been reading the classics and sappy Nicholas Sparks books, but Jodi Picoult is my favorite author ever. I spend a lot of time cooking, reading, running (at least trying to), and spending time with my fiancé and our dog. I like to hike and swim, and moving to beautiful Brevard definitely indulges my adventurous side.
I am so excited to join Transylvania County and look forward to creating a wonderful life with my soon-to-be husband here in Brevard! Marlon Gregg Morris Brevard High School – American and World History Born raised in High Point, N.C. I graduated from High Point Central High School in 1991. I graduated from Guilford College in 1997 and got my teacher certification from Greensboro College. I have taught at Eastern Guilford High School, SW Guilford High School, Ledford High School, and RB Stall High School. I became a teacher because I wanted to teach history and coach football, two things that I love. I have a wife named Shannon and a cat. I like all kinds of food. All kinds music. Blue is my color. Favorite books: “Winning Everyday,” “The Soong Dynasty,” “Rogue Warrior,” “War as I Knew It,”etc... Favorite movies: “Gone with the Wind,” “Cassablanca,” “The Sting.” I like old movies. Matt Tuckey Brevard High School I grew up in the Thumb of Michigan (which is about as flat as your thumbnail but not quite as interesting). There are three times as many cows as there are people and there are hundreds of windmills. I have a master’s degree in the teaching of chemistry and physics from Michigan State University, home of the mighty Spartan basketball team. I became a teacher because I needed a good cover story. I have a wife, daughter, and son that I love with all of my heart. Megan McGee Pisgah Forest Elementary Kindergarten I have lived in Brevard all my life. I attended Brevard Elementary, Middle, and High School. I attended Brevard College where I received my degree in Elementary Education. After graduating in May of 2014 I began substituting in Henderson County and continued to substitute until the end of the school year. I have worked as a pharmacy technician at Ingles Pharmacy, and an office assistant at Pineiro Family Practice. I was always interested in my teachers growing up. I loved helping them in anyway I could and would even stay after school to clean their rooms and prepare any resources they would need for the next day. As I got into high school I started to realize that my love for children and helping them learn and grow kept getting stronger and stronger. I was able to have an internship my senior year of high school, working in a fourth grade class at Brevard Elementary School. After my internship I knew for sure that I wanted to teach. I have a very close family. Most of my family lives in Brevard, so we are able to (continued on pg. 4)

Megan McGee (continued) see each other at least once a week if not more. I enjoy spending time with my family and could not imagine life without them. I have two dogs that are very spoiled. They are treated like princesses and expect nothing less now. While I do not necessarily have a favorite food, I do enjoy good food and love trying new things. My favorite color at the moment is turquoise, however, I tend to favor a coral pink color as well. I love all types of music but my favorite music is country. If I can sing along to it I like it. I am a hopeless romantic and enjoy reading stories about relationships and love. My favorite authors are Nicholas Sparks and Karen Kingsbury. I enjoy going for hikes and being in the forest. I do not get to spend as much time as I would like but I go for hikes and picnics as much as I possibly can. I have recently started to paint. My paintings are nowhere near Picasso’s paintings, but it allows me to express myself. I also enjoy knitting. This past winter I began to knit and it has become a stress reliever for me in times when I become overwhelmed. I am excited to teach at Pisgah Forest Elementary. I cannot wait to help students learn and provide them with the support they need to be successful. I am currently certified Elementary K-6 and Exceptional Children: General Curriculum and hope to continue my education through LenoirRhyne’s Language Development in Learning Graduate Program. Even though I will be moving a few hours away from “Daddy and Momma Llama,” they are very excited for all the opportunities TCS has to offer me! I am a lover of: The Carolina Panthers, American Sign Language, coffee, Colorado, sweet potatoes, Beth Moore, Disney, sweet tea, the color gray, twinkle lights, salmon, Elvis Presley and the Avengers! Having spent the past two summers working at a camp in Colorado, I am a lover of the mountains and all the activities that come with them! Other than that, I can be found in a movie theater, browsing Pinterest or thrift shopping. If I could pick any activity to pick up as a hobby, I would pick horseback riding without hesitation, but I typically only go about once a year. I am excited for all that TCS has to teach me this year! Moriah Poland Rosman Elementary I was born in Pennsylvania, a daughter raised in the military world. I attended East Carolina University. I have worked as a babysitter, a night shift nanny, and a bus driver/telecommunication for East Carolina University. I knew whatever I did I wanted to work with young children. After having a baby sister with speech problems come along into the family when I was 15, I knew that teaching young kids was a passion of mine just to see the growth that she was able to make in the few months with help from a speech therapist and working with us. Right then I knew I was meant to teach. I have two sisters. One is 25 and is a science teacher in Wake County and the other is seven and going into first grade. We have three beautiful children: Brian (age 7), Allysa (age 6), and Cameron (age 2). I love Italian and Mexican food. I’ve always loved working with children. I started babysitting when I was 14 and that was my first experience around young kids. I have also been a lifeguard at the Hendersonville Elks Pool where I also gave private swim lessons and that allowed me to be a “teacher” to kids needing help. That’s when I knew I wanted to work with kids. However, my final decision came during my senior year of high school when I completed my Senior Project on Autism. I worked one-onone with these students at Hendersonville Elementary and that answered all of my questions about what I wanted my future career to be. I come from a fun, loving family. I have two brothers. One is my twin who attends NC State University while also interning at Borg Warner. I started working as a teacher assistant at PFE February 2013 until May 2014. I am very excited to continue at PFE as a 4th grade teacher! I come from a family of educators. I didn’t realize until I was in college that it was in my blood to teach! I have always enjoyed working with children and teaching people new things. I enjoy all the subjects taught in elementary school and determined that would be the best fit for me. I think that my love for children, learning and fun are key elements to becoming the best teacher I can be! My parents are Taffy and Larry Galloway of Charlie’s Tire Center in Brevard. I have two brothers, and two nieces. I am married to TJ Souther, his parents are Steve and Linda Souther of Little River. TJ has a sister and brother-in-law and they have two sweet children. I love my family and extended family! TJ and I have a dog named Buster, he is 4 years old and a retired coon dog! He loves leftovers from our table! My parents have my other dog, Sadie. I got her when I was in the 9th grade and she is definitely my dog-sister! My favorite color is purple; my glasses are purple, my bedroom is purple, many of my clothes are purple! My favorite food...anything chocolate, potatoes, bread, and deer meat! I like to listen to many different genres of music, particularly Country and Christian music. I like to read all kinds of books, I don’t have a favorite book! I enjoy a good chick flick or a good action movie! I attend Brevard Community Church, Ioften help out with children’s Sunday school and am involved with helping out in our youth group. My husband, T.J., introduced me to rock climbing last year and I really enjoy climbing Looking Glass Rock and other locations. (continued pg. 6)

• Be generous with praise • Observe your child carefully and comment on the things that are done well. When you see an area that needs improvement, find a positive way to talk about it with your child. • Encourage “personal best.â€? • Help your child by encouraging him or her to do the best in school and at home. Remember, “personal bestâ€? does not mean “perfect,â€? and learning is not the same as high grades. Children, like adults, need the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them. • Make learning a priority. • Your attitude toward school atten-
dance, education and involvement in the school makes a strong and lasting impression on your child. • Show your child, by example, that learning is a priority. • Show interest in school work. • Talk about school each day. • Ask to see classwork. • Have your child read aloud to you. • Read to and with your child from a variety of material in your first language. • Encourage your child to discuss new ideas. • Show appreciation for good efforts. • Offer suggestions for success.

My student teaching was at Independence High School in the CharlotteMecklenburg school system and I taught for a couple of months in Gaston County Schools before moving to Atlanta in 1998. I taught 14 years in Cobb County, Ga. in high school and middle school. My most recent teaching position was at JJ Daniell Middle School in Marietta, Ga., where I was a gifted lead teacher. I chose to become an educator and chose my area of specialization because of an intense interest in history, particularly American History, and also because of the influence of my high school teacher, Mrs. Lillian Cothran. My specific area of expertise is World War II/Holocaust education. I have two children, Jenna, who is 12, and Caden, who is 1. My daughter also has a kayak that she loves to use on the lake. Shopping is another of my favorite activities and I spend a lot of time at the boutiques in Charlotte and Atlanta choosing unique pieces. Brevard College is preparing to welcome its largest enrollment ever to campus this week. Student-athletes were among the first to begin moving in on Monday. New students will arrive on campus on Saturday, August 17, while returning students will move in on Sunday. Classes are set to begin on Wednesday, August 20. Brevard College’s record enrollment includes students from 35 different states and 24 foreign countries. The number of local students attending Brevard continues to grow, thanks to the College’s half off tuition discount for local high school graduates. More than 10 percent of Brevard’s student population this fall comes from Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties. In response to its record-breaking growth, the college has already begun plans to build a new residence hall on campus. The new residence hall is in addition to the recently-renovated Brevard Place, an apartment style residential space just off campus that is available to returning students this fall. The addition of Brevard Place and the new state-of-the-art residence hall will significantly improve the quality of undergraduate housing for Brevard College students and greatly expand campus housing capacities for future growth.

Greg Carter Rosman Middle School 2770 Old Rosman Hwy. Rosman, NC 28772 rms.tcsnc.org (828) 862-4286 I am the principal of Rosman Middle School. I have 34 years of experience in various public middle and high schools. The past 20 of those years have been spent as principal at three different middle schools. I received my bachelor’s degree in education and master’s in education from Georgia Southern University respectively in 1980 and 1987. I earned my educational specialist degree in administration and supervision from Valdosta State University in 1992. Luanna is my wife of 33 years. I have two children: Will, who lives in Black Mountain, and Erin, my daughter, who lives in Hendersonville. I have a 2-year-old granddaughter and a 3year-old grandson. People who get to know me understand that family is important to me. In that respect, the people of Rosman have become my family as well, and I deeply value my relationships there. These past six years I have sincerely enjoyed serving the school and community of Rosman. I would like to extend an open invitation for you to drop in and see me any time. Please never hesitate to take the opportunity to stop by with me and visit. I continue to ask for your support in helping me to continue the good things that have been put into motion here at RMS. I am excited to be your principal. If you have suggestions, please contact me and make your interests known. I will always make time to meet with parents, teachers, and staff. I will continually ask you to assist me in making our community school a great place to learn. I truly want to serve our school and community. Hopefully, through working together, we will make a good school even better. Each year Rosman Middle School works hard to provide a quality education for the young folks of our community. I guess it is no longer a secret because I tell everyone that I speak with that the Rosman school district is one of the best kept secrets in western North Carolina. Rosman Middle School provides a high quality educational program, but yet delivers that with many of the traditional values that all parents deem important to the growth of their children. Personal accountability, citizenship, and a personal learning experience are all wonderful by-products of our educational mission statement.
Donivan Edwards Rosman High School 749 Pickens Highway Rosman, NC rhs.tcsnc.org (828) 862-4284 My name is Donivan Edwards and I am excited to be the new principal of Rosman High School. I have 37 years of experience in education. Eleven of those years I was Band Director at four high schools in South Carolina and Virginia. The past 26 years I have been a principal at three middle schools in Virginia and South Carolina. I am a graduate of Newberry College and my master’s degree is from Lynchburg College. Our family currently resides just north of Pickens, S.C. My wife Judy works at Daniel High in Clemson, S.C. We have two children. Our daughter Anna is a senior at North Greenville University and our son Alex is a senior at the Citadel, where he is a member of the Summerall Guard. We attend Pickens First Baptist Church, where my wife and I are both active in the music ministry and teach Sunday School. One of my goals for this year at Rosman High School is to build on the strong partnership that is present between Rosman High School and the citizens of Rosman. Our first obligation is to our students and their academic success. With strong community support for all of our programs and activities, our students will graduate prepared to meet their future challenges, and our community will prosper. Thank you for your support of our school. I look forward to working with everyone in the Rosman High family. Go Tigers! Kate Lalor Brevard Elementary School 601 Greenville Hwy. Brevard, NC bes.tcsnc.org (828) 884-2001 I grew up in a Navy family and attended ten different schools in Virginia, Hawaii, Thailand, California and North Carolina. I am proud to have graduated from Brevard High School. I knew early on that I wanted to be a teacher and am thankful to have spent a long and interesting career working with
children in public schools, primarily in Transylvania County. I have worked in many of the schools in the county, from Rosman High School to Pisgah Forest Elementary and most points in between. I have worn many hats and am delighted to currently be wearing one that says “BES Principal.” I love my school and all of the folks who work and learn together under our roof. Brevard Elementary School’s School Improvement Team has asserted our identity as a “Joyful Learning Community.” At BES we strive to create a successful and joyful experience for all of our children, equipping students with the skills they will need for productive futures. We are creating happy childhoods and successful adulthoods. I am thankful to have known all those years ago that teaching would be a challenging and fulfilling way to spend the better part of a lifetime. It is an honor to be working with the children, families, and teachers at Brevard Elementary School. Tony Meachum T.C. Henderson Elementary 11839 Rosman Hwy. Lake Toxaway, NC tch.tcsnc.org (828) 862-4463 My name is Tony Meachum and I am fortunate to be the Principal of T.C. Henderson Elementary School. Even though I have just completed my seventh year as the principal here, I have been in public education for 31 years. During my career, I have served in the following capacities: middle school science and social studies teacher, middle school baseball coach, middle school assistant football coach, summer school teacher, summer school site coordinator, middle school club sponsor, elementary assistant principal, elementary principal, middle school assistant principal and middle school principal. I love to work with children, who truly are our future. As the principal of T.C. Henderson, I am very proud of our school community, our students, our parents, and our staff members. We all work together to provide each of our students a high quality education. This is reinforced by the fact that T.C. Henderson has met the federal government's (adequate yearly progress) goals each and every year since its inception. Our school has also always been designated as a "School of Excellence," a "School of Distinction," or a “School with High Academic Growth” each year since the State of N.C. began its standardized testing programs back in the 1990s. In fact, our school was recently recognized as a “Title 1 Honor School.” This achievement means that our school is in the top 10% of all Title 1 schools in our State, in terms of student academic performance. Not only this, but our school has historically been the recipient of tremendous parental and volunteer involvement and support; which enable us to provide each of our students with the very best. My goals for the upcoming school year include: (1) to continue and improve upon our tradition of academic excellence, (2) to increase our business and social partnerships, (3) to expand parental involvement, (4) to enhance our "project-based learning," (5) to fully-develop our school's "Professional Learning Community" to include all staff, students, parents, volunteers, and the community, (6) to fully implement the North Carolina Essential Standards Curriculum, and (7) to research and implement more effective strategies that will enable us to differentiate instruction to better meet the individual needs of each of our students. As one can tell, we are very proud of our school community! Even though we know that we are doing many things very well, we are always researching ways to improve. We welcome your input and suggestions. We would also like to invite you to come visit our school any time: we would love to meet you! Merriman McMeekan Nichols Pisgah Forest Elementary 1160 Ecusta Rd. Brevard, NC pfe.tcsnc.org (828) 877-4481 I am so pleased to be the new Principal as Pisgah Forest Elementary. Although I did not grow up in Brevard, I spent my summers visiting my grandparents and extended family here. My heart has always been in the mountains of western North Carolina. I began my career in education at Western Carolina University as a Teaching Fellow. I earned my master’s degree in school administration from Gardner Webb University in 2005. I have served as a teacher at the high school level, and as an assistant principal at the middle and elementary school levels. I have also served as an instructional coach in an elementary school. I am a lifelong learner and try to approach everything by “beginning with the end in mind.”
I live in Brevard with my husband of 14 years, two daughters, our cat and dog. My vision for this school year is to continue to strive for excellence for all students regardless of their background. I truly believe all students have their own unique talents and gifts, and it is our job as educators to help them cultivate those talents and gifts. I look forward to working with the parents, teachers, and community of Pisgah Forest Elementary this year. Jason Ormsby Brevard High School 609 N. Country Club Rd. Brevard, NC bhs.tcsnc.org (828) 884-4103 My name is Jason Ormsby and I am the father of three wonderful sons. I moved to Transylvania County almost two years ago after living in Sylva for 19 years. I am starting my third year in the Transylvania County School System and my second as the principal of Brevard High School. Before I came here I did not know much about the Transylvania County School System but over my few years here I have learned that we have a dedicated staff, great students, and strong community support. My first year was an exciting time for me as well as a learning time. I learned about the school culture, expectations, and what it truly means to be a “Blue Devil.” This coming year I plan to continue building relationships, continue to improve the learning environment that our students deserve, and continue to provide our outstanding faculty with what is necessary to educate each individual student. My hopes are to provide the students of BHS with an outstanding high school experience which they will carry throughout their lives. Dr. Kerry Putnam Brevard Middle School 400 Fisher Rd. Brevard, NC bms.tcsnc.org (828) 884-2091 I earned my bachelor’s degree at Appalachian State University and graduated from Colorado State University with a master’s degree in 1996. Prior to coming to Brevard Middle School, I was the assistant principal and athletic director at Brevard High School. I enjoy hiking, mountain bike riding, camping with my family and spending time with my son and daughter. I hope you have all enjoyed your summer break and are preparing yourselves for the start of school. It is just around the corner. Scott Strickler Rosman Elementary School 167 Rosman School Rd. Rosman, NC res.tcsnc.org (828) 862-4431 As the principal of Rosman Elementary School, both I and the staff are excited to be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rosman Elementary this year, with a variety of events throughout the school year. Our focus at Rosman Elementary is to give every child a great education and to help all children learn the fundamentals of reading, in order to be successful throughout their schooling and in their life after high school. In my family I have two children, Caroline and Franklin, with my wonderful wife Heather. I have a degree in Education from Appalachian State and a Master’s in School Administration from Western Carolina University. Outside of school, I enjoy playing outdoors with my children and reading. For the past decade, I have had the pleasure of working in Transylvania County Schools as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. I would like to invite you to come and visit Rosman Elementary School anytime throughout the school year. We welcome visitors and would love to see your smiling faces in our building. This is going to be a wonderful school year, and I look forward to seeing you and your children in the coming weeks. Go Tigers! Donna Wilde Davidson River School 1000 Ecusta Rd. Transylvania County Schools will lead teachers, staff and their students through many important changes coming this school year. Welcoming two new principals at two schools and assigning new roles to central office staff, combines with large-scale ongoing updates affecting many teachers and students, to promise a challenging and exciting year ahead. With central office staff undertaking many new roles during this school year, TCS Superintendent Jeff McDaris said, “This team brings exceptional energy and commitment to their work. They are ready to lead Transylvania County into the future through many changes occurring for education on the Jeff McDaris state and federal level. In 2014-15, Transylvania County will once again complete the accreditation process with AdvancED, formerly known as SACS (Southern Assoc. of Colleges and Schools). McDaris noted that TCS was the first district in N.C. to earn this accreditation and has been successful in two previous attempts for this 5-year recognition. Jeremy Gibbs, TCS human resources director, will oversee the accreditation process locally, starting with a broad stakeholder survey and strategic planning update. In addition, Human Resources has recruited at least 36 new teachers to fill open assignments, including 14 retirees among those ending their employment with Transylvania County Schools. New principals will begin at Pisgah Forest Elementary and Rosman High School this year, along with assistant principals and athletic directors coming on board at Brevard High and Rosman High. McDaris added, “Facing a large amount of work and complex challenges during this academic year, our team is excited about working with schools on behalf of our students and community. With the departure of Dr. Scott Elliott to lead Watauga County Schools, several new assignments will be shared among a new leadership team at 225 Rosenwald Lane. Audrey Reneau will continue as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for grades K through 5, with ongoing oversight for the Title I federal funding program. Title I supports critical teaching resources and materials for schools with high percentages of students on the free and reduced lunch program. Reneau’s primary focus for TCS elementary schools will continue to be Guided Reading, which contributed to higher reading scores district-wide. Coming out of NC’s highlypublicized third-grade “Read to Achieve program, every third-grader in
assessments and active learning strategies to help students overcome obstacles to learning yet maintains the same high academic standards of Transylvania County Schools. Our dynamic staff strives to engage learners and their families for the success of each student. Since no two students are alike, each student is looked at individually, scheduled according to strengths and needs, and connected to resources to support individual goals. Each year, we conduct over 300 home visits to meet with parents and keep them involved in their child’s education.
On a personal note, I am happily married to Dennis Wilde and we have six beautiful grandchildren. I am a native of Buffalo, N.Y., but have been in the south for the majority of my life: my husband says I am officially a “southern belle! I love working with my students and enjoy seeing their success in school. I am also thankful to the Pisgah Forest Rotary Club, members of St. Timothy United Methodist Church, and the many other community members who support DRS and our students each year.
Transylvania County was successfully promoted to fourth grade, except those retained by parent choice. Increased reading time and reading across the curriculum contributed to these results. Another area of emphasis will be Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), which enable teachers to work more closely within grade levels, and also to prepare students for transition to the next grade level. This summer, teachers created a curriculum pacing guide for grades K through 5, with a benchmark system to help measure student progress throughout the year and a resource collection supporting teachers at each grade level. With the time saved, teachers will devote additional attention to students and parents in small group and one-onone meetings for vital curriculum support. Two administrators have joined the central office team this summer after serving most recently in TCS high schools. Brian Brian Weaver Weaver, former principal at Rosman High School, will be Director of curriculum and instruction for grades 6 through 12. Arleca Chapman, former assistant principal at Brevard High School, will serve as director of career and technical education and student services (school counselors). Weaver said, “I am Arleca excited about the opportunity Chapman to work with our educators in providing professional development and instructional support. Recognizing the importance of a smooth start for every student in high school, a goal for this school year is to assist with transition plans for our middle school students as they enter our high schools. Chapman added, “We will continue to build on the good work of former CTE director (Elliott) in focusing on updating programs, curriculum and student involvement; and in student services by continuing to build our program, assessing and designing programs to meet the career, social and emotional needs of our students. Middle and high schools will continue to develop and expand CTE programs that provide students with the opportunity to develop skills required to compete for high skill and high wage jobs in an increasingly global economy. In February 2014, Chris Whitlock became director of technology after working on the team of Donys-Kaye Merrill, who retired after 40 years
with TCS. Looking at recent accomplishments and the coming year, Whitlock said, “We will continue to expand our one-to-one (1:1) initiative so that each student will have access to technology in the classroom. We currently have implemented this program in our high schools Chris Whitlock and middle schools. “We hope to continue with devices in fourth and fifth grades, to provide a technology tool for use in the classroom by both teacher and student, added Whitlock. “We will also be working on expanding our network to be able to offer more services to our students and teachers at faster rates. Kevin Smith recently joined the TCS Schools- Kevin Smith Community Relations office to manage the central office presence on the home page (www.tcsnc.org) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Smith also acts as a liaison with outside media, as well as TCS Education Foundation and the district’s partners for special events. “Our schools are busily creating awesome experiences for students every day, said Smith. “I’m excited to discover those stories and bring them to our audience through the media and our many channels: on our website, Twitter, Facebook, and now through Instagram and Flickr. We’re just scratching the surface, and I look forward to bringing teachers, students, and parents into a vibrant ongoing conversation all year long.

AUGUST 14, 2014 • THE TRANSYLVANIA TIMES
As a new school year draws nearer, parents can employ several strategies to help their kids readjust to the rigors of the classroom.
The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends. For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents. Reacclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer. • Establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, parents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their kids’ lives to make the
transition back to school go more smoothly. Plan morning activities so kids can readjust to waking up early each day. In addition, serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time you typically serve it during the school year so kids’ bodies can begin to readjust as well. • Take kids along when shopping for school supplies. If you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input. • Many students are given summer reading lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming coursework. Parents should monitor kids’ progress on such reading lists and even discuss the books with their kids when possible. Read the books along with them if you think it will help engage them. If kids were not assigned summer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books, rewarding kids when they finish a new book. Kids who read throughout the summer may be more likely to start the school year off on the right foot than those who don’t crack a book all summer. • Encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many schoolaged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even non-athletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell of the year rings. Theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year. The arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.
Age 5 is a big year in a child’s life. In many school districts, children enroll in kindergarten shortly after their fifth birthdays. But age alone does not dictate if a child is ready to transition from a preschool environment to kindergarten, and parents may need to work with educators to determine if their children are ready to take the first big step of their academic careers. Many developmental and education experts believe that numerous factors, in addition to age, determine school readiness, including physical, social and cognitive development. Many parents want their kids to begin kindergarten at the same time as other kids their age, but enrolling youngsters before they’re ready could have repercussions for years to come. Students who begin kindergarten before they’re ready may fall behind, resulting in frustration that turns them off from school. With such significant stakes, parents may want to answer a few questions and look for these generalized kindergarten readiness clues before enrolling their youngsters in school. • Does my child have solid oral-language skills? Language is more than drilling letters and sight words into a child’s head through repetition. Language allows kids to share in new experiences and lessons that will expand their vocabularies. The more kids experience, the more their curiosity grows. This opens up opportunities for discussion about a variety of topics and introduces words and concepts that may be new and exciting to children. Research indicates one of the best predictors of eventual reading success is a well-developed oral vocabulary in kindergarten. Children will retain words if they hear them enough and if they’re used in context and conversation. • Can my child listen to and follow instructions? Kindergarten students will be introduced to many foreign things, and some kinds may be in a school environment for the very first time. Teachers will be issuing instructions and seeking cooperation from the class. To keep up with peers and lessons, kindergarteners will need to be able to remain quiet for extended periods of time, listen to instructions and then properly act on them. • Is my son or daughter excited about learning? Some children cannot wait to go to kindergarten, especially those who are excited at the prospect of going to the same school as their older siblings. Enthusiasm about school and an eagerness to learn and discover new things are indicative of kindergarten readiness. A child does not need to have mastery over every skill just yet, but taking the initiative to try and ask questions is a good start to successful learning. • Does my child want to be independent? The phrases “I’ll do it myself” or “I’ll try” can be music to a kindergarten teacher’s ears. Parents
may be in a rush and find it easier to dress kids or get them snacks. But doing everything for kids puts them at a disadvantage. Independent streaks can help kids adjust to school. Kindergarteners may have to go to the bathroom and wash up independently. They also may have to fasten buttons, open up lunches and hang up coats. Children who cannot handle such tasks may struggle to adjust to a school environment. • Can my child recognize basic letters and numbers? Children entering kindergarten should know most letters by sight and be able to count to 10. Preparing for kindergarten can be fun and does not require flash cards or homework. Encourage kids to count objects in the world around them or do some preliminary reading by recognizing letters on signs at stores or places in the neighborhood. Kindergarten readiness is determined by a variety of factors, including age, school assessment, enthusiasm about learning, and signs of independence.
Today’s students have more gadgets at their disposal than ever before. As technology like tablets and smartphones have become more prevalent in the lives of adults, such devices also have become more commonplace in the classroom. Some kids thrive when teachers utilize technology to enhance lesson plans, while others may be distracted by access to technology. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common childhood disorders. ADHD can make it difficult for kids to maintain focus in the classroom, and that focus may be enhanced or further compromised by technology that’s capable of serving many different functions. Kids who use the technology to their advantage may find it improves their ability to grasp lessons, but some kids may be distracted by devices or even other items in the classroom that make it difficult for them to absorb lessons. Parents concerned about their kids’ ability to cope with distractions in the classroom and at home can take the following steps in an effort to help youngsters improve their academic performance. • Speak to your child’s teacher about seating assignments. Students who find it difficult to focus in the classroom may benefit from new seating assignments. Windows or high-traffic areas of the classroom, such as doorways, can compromise a student’s ability to focus. In addition, the back of the classroom is not the ideal spot for youngsters who find it difficult to focus on the teacher, as teachers may not notice kids in the back of the class as readily as they might with students sitting in the front of the room. • Encourage participation. Many teachers recognize the value of active participation in the classroom, but kids who are struggling to focus may shy away from participating because they are worried about embarrassing themselves in front of their classmates. Parents and
teachers can work with students to encourage them to participate, reassuring them that they don’t need to be experts on a given subject to contribute to lessons. Even if students’ participation is limited to asking questions rather than answering them, encouraging kids to raise their hands and participate in class may help them focus more on the lessons being discussed. • Minimize distractions at home. Kids who have no trouble focusing in the classroom may find it’s a whole different ballgame when they arrive home to study or do their homework. Mom and dad no doubt have their own gadgets around the house, and such devices as well as television may be too difficult for youngsters to ignore. At home, parents can create a safe haven from distraction by designating a room or area of the house for schoolwork. Such areas should be clear of distractions like television, telephones, video game consoles, and other gadgets that can compromise a student’s focus. Make such areas off limits to cell phones and block social media websites from computers in such rooms, so kids aren’t tempted to spend study time chatting with friends online. If a child’s study area is not in a separate room of the house, parents should avoid turning on the television until kids have finished their studies for the night. • Consider playing games designed to improve attention and focus. Games designed to improve attention can be a fun way for parents to help their youngsters conquer their concentration issues. For example, the creators behind Lumosity.com collaborated with researchers from universities around the world in an effort to design games to improve visual attention in people of various ages and backgrounds. Few kids are not enamored with games, and games to improve focus and attention may help kids without making them feel as though they are back in a classroom. Parents can speak with their child’s teacher to determine which games might be best suited for their youngsters.

Technology is an important part of many people’s daily lives. Devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games are now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine a life without email, the Internet or text messages. Even children are proving adept at using technology, which can be a valuable tool for educators attempting to reach today’s youngsters. Digital learning is learning facilitated by technology. Not only can digital learning be done in the classroom, but also it can extend to home life as children continue to explore lessons through hands-on interaction with digital devices. According to data from Project Tomorrow’s “Speak Up” study, an initiative of the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization, students are frustrated with the lack of technology in their schools and by the lack of sophisticated use of that technology. The study indicates that students want more of the following: • social-based learning; • tools that increase untethered learning; • development of and connection to a personal network of expert resources; and • a digitally rich learning environment. Students acclimated to technology at home are not content to merely rely on textbooks or CDs in the classroom. They’re more interested in interactive, Web-based tools that enhance communication and collaboration. As a result of this shifting landscape, parents should expect to see more lessons and homework involving interactive technology. To make this transition go more smoothly, teachers and parents can work together to ensure kids are making the most of the exciting developments in education. The following are just a handful of the changes that figure to come about as a result of the transition to digital learning. • lesson plans, assignments and tutoring opportunities available online for continued reference; • learning-centered chat rooms for peer-to-peer interaction and sharing of materials; • digital content in the way of high quality academic materials available through interactive apps and not stagnant PDFs or text materials. Software may range from video lectures to learning games.
Digital learning and technological advancements are changing rapidly and helping to reshape the classroom and how kids are learning.
• increased availability of teachers and professors. Students and parents will be able to reach out to educators beyond school hours if assistance or further clarification of assignments is needed. • supplemental material that comes at the pace of the student, rather than the pace of an entire classroom. Interactive and adaptive software enables students to spend more or less time on lessons to achieve the best level of learning. • digital communication with educators, including online conference scheduling. • smartboards, tablets and laptop use more heavily integrated into classrooms.
digital Internet services are well behind the times. Many cable and fiber optic television providers now offer television, Internet and phone bundles for reasonable fees. Compared to the dial-up services and initial coaxial Internet of yesteryear, today’s Internet speeds are light years ahead. Students who need to stream movies or other content or upload and download large picture or text files often find high-speed Internet invaluable. • Digital planners: Many devices come with calendars and planner functions built in, and those that don’t can often be Parents can speak to their kids’ teachers to determine which devices will upgraded by simply downloading support lessons students are learning in the classroom. an app that performs such funcShopping for back-to-school supplies was once limited to picking up tions. Technology is now an integral part of many classrooms, where may want to lean toward a calendar app that is integrated across many Internet-ready devices such as tablets, computers and smartboards are platforms. This way calendar events can be synched and viewed on part of daily lessons. Many students already know how to browse the Internet, create blogs ents can rest easy knowing their kids are always just a phone call or text or manipulate photos. But they may not know how to make use of digital message away. Depending on the courses they take, students may need additional resources with regard to their education. Students cannot learn such lessons unless they are equipped with the tools to facilitate digital learning. gadgets, such as graphing calculators, scanners and printers. Parents who want their youngsters to embrace technology as part of their education may want to consider the following devices. • Internet-ready devices: Internet-ready devices include desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, and even smartphones. Assignments may require that students use the Internet, and many of today’s teachers create their own websites where they list assignments or post links to supplemental materials. Students may have to confer with teachers via email or share materials with classmates. • Word-processing applications: Whether students are writing a 20page term paper or have to type up a short summary for a homework assignment, eventually they will need access to word-processing software that includes basic typing, editing and desktop publishing functions. Many computer software bundles come with a word processor preinstalled. If not, software is available for purchase or parents can download free shareware. Examples of word-processing software include Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, TextMaker, Corel Write, and Google Docs. • High-speed Internet: Households that have not yet upgraded to
