Scattered across the Indian Ocean in a double chain of 26 atolls filled with hundreds of small tropical islands, lies one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world: The Maldives. This small island nation is made up of about 1,200 coral islands form around natural ring-like atolls just across the equator and covers over 90,000 square kilometres directly south of India and Sri Lanka. Particularly the island nation is located in a strategic area with access to major international sea routes in the Indian Ocean.
Renown the world over for its white sandy beaches andbreath-taking underwater beauty, each atoll of the Maldives is made of coral reefs encircling turquoise lagoons. These reefs are among the biggest attractions the country has as they are teeming with countless species of marine life and underwater coral gardens. Each atoll has approximately 20 to 60 islands of which only a handful are inhabited. However, there are a few atolls that are basically just single, isolated islands.
Out of the 1,200 islands, only 187 are inhabited while the other islands are used entirely for economic purposes; tourism, fishing and agriculture being the leading economic industries in the country. Located on top of a vast underwater volcanic mountain range, the Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sea-level.
While coconut palm makes up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct difference in the types of plants found in the inhabited and uninhabited islands. Inhabited islands usually have small groves of banana, papaya, drumstick, citrus, breadfruit trees and coconut palms. In the uninhabited islands, you are more likely to find various types of bushes and mangroves along the beach as well as the everpresent coconut trees.
Marshy areas and even small to medium -sized lakes can be found on some islands too. The temperature of the Maldives ranges between 24 and 33°C throughout the year. The country experiences 2 seasons: dry monsoon and rainy monsoon. However, due to global warming, the monsoons have become less predictable each year. Suffice to say that the weather now is warm and sunny most of the year, with only the occasional rainy days regardless of which monsoon it is.
Historically speaking, the Maldives was colonized by travelers from the Indian subcontinent. The earliest written history of the Maldives was marked by the arrival of Sinhalese people in Maldives around 543 to 483 BC.
The country experienced a colonial period back in 1558 when the Portuguese established a garrison with a Viador (Viyazoaru) – or roughly translated as an overseer of a factory (trading post). Somewhere in the mid-17th century the Dutch made a move to the Maldives, by establishing hegemony over Maldives without directly inflicting themselves in internal affairs. They were dispersed off by the British back in 1796 which resulted in Maldives becoming a part of the British protected areas.
The Maldives ancestral pedigree is rooted from Buddhism carried across the Indian subcontinent and made its way in Maldives along with its first settlers. However, in 1193 the Maldives was converted to Islam in the year 1153 AD by a Muslim trader from Maghrib (Morocco) by the name of Abul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary.
Since then, the religion has played a key role in shaping the
Maldivian society. Some of the famous landmarks in the country have been greatly influenced by Islamic architecture.
Following the transition from Buddhism to Islam, the Buddhist King Dhovemi, after converting to Islam, adopted the title of Sultan Mohammed al Adil and was responsible for initiating a series of six Islamic dynasties, which lasted until 1932 when the sultanate became elective. One interesting fact regarding the early sultans of the Maldives was their adopted title or the Sultan’s formal title, which was Sultan of Land and Sea, Lord of the Twelve-Thousand Islands and Sultan of the Maldives, and carried credibility until 1965.
Despite the islands been scattered all throughout 90,000 square kilometers, Maldivians share a similar cultural heritage, history, ancestry, homeland, language and religion. These common factors are the reason for the unity and harmony prevailing in the alluring islands.
Traditionally whenever guests visit a local island, the islanders will welcome them by serving a fresh coconut drink. This tradition has continued to this day so don’t be surprised if
your resort offers a beautifully decorated coconut drink when you reach your destination.
The customs and social behaviour of the Maldivians have been greatly influenced by the Indians, Sri Lankans, Arabs and North Africans who visited the Maldives while traversing through the trading routes of the central Indian Ocean. The Maldives culture is rich and vibrant due to the infusion of various other cultural elements.
Maldives is also renowned for having expert craftsmen, who practice and promote unique and purely Maldivian original lacquer work as well as souvenir crafting. The intricate stone carvings found in the Friday Mosque in Male’ city is a living example of Maldivian craftmanship.
The lacquer crafting is normally practiced on wood, being spun at excessive speed on a handmade motor – like equipment. Sharp edged knives are used to precisely ink in and carve out designs and patterns on them.
A country that had boomed into progress through fishing and agriculture back in the yesteryear period witnessed a paradigm shift and a drastic increase in its journey towards modernism when Maldives was introduced to the field of tourism. Tourism in Maldives was established back in 1972, and Kurumba Maldives was etched into the pages of history when it became the first resort to be opened in the nation. An initiative led by the then President, Mr. Ibrahim Nasir. The second resort to be opened in Maldives was Bandos, and both resorts have since then gone to become landmarks or pinnacles of Maldivian tourism industry and are still in operation.
When the industry started, the country had just two resorts with a capacity of roughly 280 beds. However, today, approximately 150+ registered resorts are operating in Maldives while dozens more are in developmental phases. Apart from the lineage of resorts, Maldives also caters to the tourism industry in the form of guesthouses which sprung up first back in 2009, through a smart move in the regulations that finally allowed tourists to stay among local populations.
The new amendment to the Maldivian constitution which was ratified in 2009 stated the permission to enact and establish hotels or guesthouses in locally inhabited islands – allowing tourists to visit and stay in islands where locals lived. A new breed of thrill seeking and adventurous tourists were attracted through various expos held nationally and internationally, which saw the participation of many entrepreneurs handling or owning guesthouses.
Such networking expos and symposiums allowed to boost the tourist across countries that had middle to luxury class tourists visiting Maldives to a larger demographic of tourists – therefore allowing more flexibility and hospitality options for visitors to experience.
Liveboards, also known in the Maldives as ‘safari boats’, are another attraction for tourists to Maldives. These vessels, which cruise around the atolls on scheduled itineraries; usually lasting a week or sometimes two, are the best for die-hard scuba divers who want to do at least three dives per day as well as see as much of the Maldives as possible. The rich variety of experiences available includes diving with large pelagics, drift diving, wreck diving, channel diving, and exploring thilas, caves and remote reefs. The vessels move to new spots every day and the route usually encompasses more than one atoll.
If this is your first time in Maldives, your point of entry will most likely be the Velana International Airport (VIA) in the island of Hulhule. Depending on the travel plans you’ve made, you’re going to have to catch a boat or a seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As a country of more than 1192 islands divided into 26 atolls stretched over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (34,749 sq mi), the only possible modes of transportation are by sea or air transfer ready when you arrive at the airport.
You’ll most likely be using a speedboat transfer to the resort or hotel if it is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the most distant atolls you’ll most likely get to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your destination in one of the seaplanes.
Velana International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. Then there
are seven domestic airports. However, it should be noted that the Velana International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country.
Male’ city is 10 minutes away from Velana International Airport by taxi. In Male’ there are plenty of taxis available to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise, an airport representative or resort staff will pick you up upon arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer.
A holiday in Maldives would be incomplete without enjoying at least a few of the fantastic excursions available from resorts and guesthouses.
With so many places to see and so much to do, you’d be hard-pressed to enjoy everything, so here’s a small guide to help you decide what activities you can fit into your holiday.
The unmatched beauty of the Maldives marine world is a unique experience that everyone must try at least once in their life. Luckily, all resorts and the majority of the liveaboards that operate here come with well equipped dive centers, staffed by multilingual and experienced professionals. Almost all dive centers in Maldives now offer underwater cameras for rent or purchase, allowing you to take a video of your dive with you when you go back to show off to your friends and family.
Although a relatively new addition to the Maldives experience compared to diving and snorkelling, the Maldives now boasts some of the best surf sports in the world and attracts even world famous surfurs to its surf breaks. The best time for surfing in the Maldives is said to be from April to October but there are surf sports all across the Maldives that can offer excellent experiences to everyone from beginners to professionals all throughout the year. The surf generally ranges in size from 3 to 8 feet although bigger ones are experienced occasionally.
Basically, it’s a bundled package that gives you the chance to enjoy several excursions in one! The ‘island hopping’ excursion usually takes you to another resort, an uninhabited island and an inhabited island all in a day! If getting a small taste of what another Maldivian resort is like isn’t enough, consider that you will get the chance to go snorkelling in the clear waters of a deserted island and relax at the end of the trip by enjoying a beach BBQ under the stars. You will also be able to visit a local inhabited island to experience what a typical Maldivian island looks like.
Available as a full-day or a half-day trip, the Male’ Tour allows tourists to experience the hustle and bustle of the world’s most densely populated capital city. At the Male’ jetty you will be handed over to an external local tour guide who will guide you through the history, politics and culture of this unique country. In Male’ you have several places worth seeing and visiting, such as the National Musuem, the local fish market, fruit & vegetable market, and the Sultan Park. You can finish off the tour by visiting some of the several souvenir shops in the area.
Every tourist resort in the Maldives has a Water Sports center and the same is true for almost every island that operates guesthouses in the Maldives. These offer various activities for the guests but the basic activities available usually are snorkelling, windsurfing, banana riding, kayaking and jet skiing.
However, some Water Sports Centers also offer the more thrilling catamaran sailing, parasailing, kitesurfing, and even Flyboards (Iron Man style water jet-pack) and the Subwing (the personal submarine that lets you ‘’fly’’ throughout the water).
Snorkelling is a good alternative to diving for those who do not want to go through the hassle of learning to dive and getting familiar with the equipment. Just put on a snorkel and you’re good to go. Maldives lagoons are so clear and abundunt with rich marine life that even a short snorkelling trip just a few feet away from the beach over the house reef will yield unbelievable wonders and sights to enjoy.
Take the chance to enjoy stunning Maldivian sunset out on the high seas with a glass of sparkling wine and dolphins to guide your way. Don’t forget to take your cameras, as there’s always a chance to bump into some friendly dolphins who are more than willing to put on a show for you.
Often said to be the best way to enjoy the Maldives if you are a diver, a cruise boat not only offers you the opportunity to explore and visit a lot of islands of the Maldives, it also gives you the chance to dive some of the best dive sites all across the Maldives. That’s not all; being on one of the various sizes of the beautiful luxury liveaboards of Maldives means you get to go on fishing trips too.
For the adventurous types who want a chance to tell the tale of landing the big one! Set out early in the morning and catch an unforgettable Maldivian sunrise while the crew of the boat prepares an energetic breakfast that will keep your energy levels high for the upcoming battle. Then prepare for an epic struggle to land one of the biggest game fish in the Maldivian waters; marlins or swordfish.
The seaplane companies operating in the Maldives offer spectacular flights over the atolls; perfect for photo trips or sight-seeing. Enjoy the aerial view of the beautiful islands of the Maldives as the seaplane fly low to give you the best views from the air as possible.
The world’s biggest passenger submarine is available to take you down to the beautiful underwater paradise of the Maldives. A truly unique experience not to be missed and highly recommended for every tourist to the Maldives. What makes this submarine trip unique is not that you get to see many of the fantastic marine creatures that inhabit the Maldivian sea up close, but the fact that the operators of the trip have arranged an underwater circus for the passengers to enjoy as they gaze out through the portholes of the submarine. Watch as divers interect with the various marine life around the sub, feeding and playing with them. Gasp in awe as a playful giant moray eel comes out from the reef it calls home to swim and play around with the divers, even letting them pet and feed it. Catching sight of a turtle or a shark is also very possible.
Muslim Friendly Travel Rating (MFTR) is a voluntary rating that examines and evaluates tourism properties in the Maldives, specifically the resorts, safaris, airports, guesthouses and city hotels based on their level of Muslim friendliness. It is an annual rating ensuring the services and amenities are in compliance to Muslim etiquettes.
MFTR acts as a stand-alone accreditation business focused on producing trusted and reliable Muslim friendly rating results for domestic and international visitors. The 5-star symbol added to an institution is an award granted after a thorough quality assessment is completed and approved by the MFTR. The process helps a traveler know what to expect beforehand from an institution.
Tourism establishments are graded ‘voluntarily’ from 1 Star up to 5 Stars with 1 Star being very basic in the Muslim friendliness services it offers and 5 Stars meeting the highest requirements.
Tourism establishments are graded ‘voluntarily’ from 1 Star up to 5 Stars with 1 Star being very basic in the Muslim friendliness services it offers and 5 Stars meeting the highest requirements.
When our Assessors perform a grading, they are mindful of the type of accommodation being graded. It is therefore possible for even smaller tourism establishments - for instance, a guesthouse property - to achieve 5-Star category award providing that they meet the requirements.
In short, MFTR is an independent rating system that is grounded on an institution’s overall Muslim friendliness. According to research and experts, the rating system enables and encourages more Muslim-friendly travelers to visit a country or a property, while also enabling the rating to be used as a marketing technique.
One of the most well-known hotels in the Maldives located in the Capital City of Male’, JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La, has achieved the title of the first hotel rated under MFTR (Muslim Friendly Travel Rating) by Maldives Halal Travel.
Muslim Friendly Travel Rating or MFTR is a voluntary rating that examines and evaluates tourism properties in the Maldives including hotels, resorts, safaris, guesthouses based on their level of Muslim friendliness. It is an annual rating that ensures the services and amenities comply to Muslim etiquettes. MFTR is awarded after a thorough inspection carried out at the property to see if the establishment fits into the requirements of Maldives Halal Travel.
An establishment is evaluated on halal food, recreational facilities for male & female, conservative dress code, Muslim-friendly amenities, level of privacy, level of non-halal activities, services in the month of Ramadan, prayer facilities and financial transitions.
Based on our evaluation, JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La scored 5 stars and is now considered as a top class established with exclusive services for Muslim travelers. Maldives Halal Travel Founder and Managing Director Dr. Hussain Sunny Umar
The Property will also enjoy a certification issued my Maldives Halal Travel as well as a stamp identifying them as a 5-star MFTR rated property to be used in their marketing materials.
MFTR acts as a stand-alone accreditation business focused on producing trusted and reliable Muslim friendly rating results for domestic and international visitors. We believe that such a rating system enables and encourages more MuslimFriendly travelers to visit a property, while enabling the rating to be used as a marketing technique.

Velaa Private Island is the realisation of a dream to create a ‘beyond luxury’ exclusive boutique hideaway in the Maldives. Velaa means “Turtle” in the local language – named after generations of sea turtles that flock there to nest and hatch.
From a broader “bird’s eye view” which greets arrivals by seaplane, the island’s exclusive over-water villas are also constructed to resemble the head of a turtle, with the island forming the body.
The resort comprises 47 private villas, houses and exclusive residences. While 18 of the 47 are built over water, the Romantic Pool Residence can only be reached by boat, allowing even more privacy and exclusivity.
