Composed of more than a thousand coral islands scattered across the vast Indian Ocean, the Maldives Archipelago is one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations.
Composed of more than a thousand coral islands scattered across the vast Indian Ocean, the Maldives Archipelago is one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations. Out of the 26 atolls, over 170 islands host operational resorts, while the local population resides on fewer than 200 islands. With a population exceeding 500,000, the Maldives operates on GMT +5, and its currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). The US Dollar is widely accepted, with an official conversion rate of 15.42.
Renowned for its pristine sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and exceptional hospitality, the Maldives also boasts a vibrant cultural mosaic influenced by Arabian, African, European, and Asian elements, blended seamlessly with its maritime and island lifestyle. The Maldives is believed to have been first settled by people from Southern India and Sri Lanka around 1500 BC. Historically rich in spices, coconuts, fish, and pearls, the archipelago also hosted abundant cowry shells, used as currency from Africa to China until the 16th century. This attracted traders from various regions, who left a lasting impact on Maldivian society and culture.
Music and art are deeply ingrained in Maldivian daily life, reflecting a rich tradition of artistic expression. The Maldives is home to highly skilled artists excelling in stone carving, boat building, traditional attire details, and jewelry making. Before embracing Islam, the Maldives was a Buddhist nation renowned for its art of stone carving. Intricately carved statues and buildings from this period still stand, and Arabic artistic influences emerged post-Islam, evident in ancient mosques adorned with elaborate designs and calligraphy.
Liyelaajehun, one of the Maldives’ most distinguished handicrafts, is believed to have been inherited through ancient trade with China. Initially, it enhanced the durability of wooden products in the humid island environment. Today, liyelaa jehun is primarily practiced for decorative purposes.
The lacquer used in liyelaa jehun is sourced from neighboring countries, with its preparation being the first crucial step. The lacquer is heated and mixed with pigments to create vibrant colors, including a local pigment called uguli. For yellow lacquer, a traditional
medicinal ingredient known as risseyo is added. Once the pigments are blended through a process of flipping and beating, the lacquer is flattened, cooled, and cut into strips, ready for application.
Craftsmen typically use durable woods like Alexander Laurel (funa) for the base. The sculpting process begins by attaching the wood to a spinning tool, traditionally powered by a pull rope. Precision tools of various shapes ensure a smooth, refined finish. Once shaped, the laa jehun process begins with applying yellow lacquer, followed by successive layers of colors according to the artisan’s design. After polishing and smoothing each layer, a final black lacquer coat is applied as the canvas for intricate designs. The top black layer is then carefully scratched off, revealing the colored layers beneath. These freehand designs, crafted without stencils, give each lacquered object a unique identity, showcasing the artisan’s skill and artistic vision. The range of lacquered products is vast, from small jewelry containers to larger ornamental pieces. Traditional colors—red, black, and yellow— remain favored for their timeless elegance. Each
liyelaa jehun creation is a testament to the skill and creativity of Maldivian artisans.
While liyelaa jehun reflects the Maldivian artistry, other traditional crafts such as fangi viyun (thatchweaving) provide practical and cultural value. This sustainable method of creating roofing materials from coconut palm fronds (fangi) has been employed in constructing homes and huts for centuries. The process involves cleaning and splitting the fronds, then weaving them into durable, weatherproof panels using a criss-cross technique. Fangiviyun is popular in building resorts and eco-friendly structures, offering a natural connection to the Maldivian traditions.
Similarly, thundu kunaa mat weaving showcases the resourcefulness of Maldivian artisans, transforming screw pine leaves (Pandanus odorifer) into detailed works of art. The leaves are harvested, boiled, dried, split into strips, and dyed with natural pigments. The elaborate hand-weaving process creates geometric patterns in natural hues. Once used for sitting, praying, or covering floors, thundu kunaa mats are now prized
as decorative items and souvenirs, reflecting the weaver’s skill and attention to detail.
Craftsmanship preserves heritage in many forms, as do music and dance, which are essential expressions of the Maldivian spirit. Bodu Beru, one of the most iconic traditions, is believed to have been introduced by African sailors and traders around the 11th or 12th century. Its African roots are evident in the rhythmic drumming, call-and-response singing, and communal spirit. Over time, Bodu Beru has evolved into a symbol of Maldivian identity, particularly spreading from the southern atolls like Seenu and Huvadhoo.
Performed by groups of men, Bodu Beru features drummers, singers, and dancers. The performance begins with a slow, steady beat on the drums (beru), accompanied by chanting and singing. As the performance intensifies, so does the rhythm, with the dancers moving more vigorously in sync with the escalating tempo. This gradual build-up creates an electrifying atmosphere, often reaching a euphoric climax.
Whether experienced in a local village or during a resort performance, Bodu Beru continues to captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into the heart of Maldivian culture. While modern adaptations have blended traditional beats with contemporary influences, Bodu Beru retains its roots in the African and South Asian rhythms that first inspired it. Its vibrant drumming, captivating dance, and collective participation continue to be the heartbeat of Maldivian music and dance.
With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the Maldives offers more than a luxurious escape; it reveals centuries of tradition, craftsmanship, and artistic expression. From the intricate patterns of liyelaa jehun and thundu kunaa mats to the rhythmic energy of Bodu Beru, each tradition is a piece of a greater whole. The Maldives is a cultural mosaic where diverse histories, vibrant artistry, and enduring customs meet, creating a harmonious blend that invites visitors to explore the soul of the islands.

Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that true leadership comes from humility. To lead a team effectively, especially one as diverse as ours, it’s essential to stay grounded and foster a collaborative environment.
With over 15 years in the Maldivian tourism industry, you must have spearheaded many innovations. What would you consider the greatest innovation you’ve introduced?
I’ve always believed that true innovation in the tourism industry is never the result of a single individual’s effort. It’s about collaboration, especially when working in a multicultural environment like the Maldives. Every voice matters when introducing something new, and that collective input is what drives successful innovation.
One of the standout innovations that I was part of was reshaping the surf experience at Lohis in the Maldives. Initially, surfing was available to everyone at the resort, but over time, we recognized the potential to elevate this into a more specialized offering. We developed the Lohis Surfing Package, which is unique not just in the Maldives but globally. We crafted an experience that wasn’t only for the surfer but also for their families and non-surfing companions. This “surf village” concept allows for a holistic surf experience that caters to enthusiasts and provides an ultimate holiday experience for everyone involved. This innovation created a niche within the surfing community, making it more than just a sport but a fullfledged vacation experience.
Another pioneering initiative we introduced was the 24-hour Premium All-Inclusive concept for four-star properties. Traditionally, all-inclusive packages in the Maldives were quite basic, often limited to standard alcohol brands and restrictive dining options. We saw a gap in the market, particularly for the four-
star segment, where guests were increasingly seeking a more premium, all-inclusive experience. By introducing the 24-hour Premium All-Inclusive model, we provided guests with access to premium beverage brands, a dine-around concept, and a host of value additions that weren’t available before. This concept was the first of its kind in the Maldives, offering guests a higher level of service and luxury, without the price tag of a five-star resort.
Even at Heritance Aarah, we continue to push boundaries. At Aitken Spence, we don’t just follow market trends, we aim to set them. Each of these innovations was a team effort, where we collectively understood the evolving needs of our guests and delivered something that redefined the experience they could expect from the Maldives.
In your extensive career in the Maldivian tourism industry, how have your values and philosophy influenced your approach to leading sales and marketing at Heritance Aarah?
Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that true leadership comes from humility. To lead a team effectively, especially one as diverse as ours, it’s essential to stay grounded and foster a collaborative environment. At Heritance Aarah, we have a multicultural sales team with representatives spread across continents, each bringing their unique perspective and expertise to the table.
One of the core values I hold dear is the importance of providing equal opportunities. We believe in developing local talent and giving everyone in the team the exposure they need to grow, both professionally and personally. Whether it’s sending a new team member to an international market or allowing them to take the lead on key projects, we ensure that everyone has a platform to shine. This isn’t just about business growth it’s about building future leaders from within, especially in a destination like the Maldives, where nurturing local talent is critical to the sustainability of the industry.
What I truly enjoy is how my team often challenges me. it’s a dynamic where I don’t just lead them, but they push me to stay ahead, to think creatively, and to constantly innovate. That healthy tension drives us all to strive for excellence. At the end of the day, leadership, for me, is not about dictating from the top but empowering each individual to realize their potential, which, in turn, strengthens the whole organization.
Who or what have been the key influences in your career, and how have they helped shape your professional journey?
There have been several pivotal influences in my life that have profoundly shaped my career. First and foremost, my parents and the teachers at St. Peter’s College in Colombo played an essential role in laying the foundation of my character and work ethic. They instilled values of discipline, perseverance, and humility, which have been invaluable throughout my journey.
However, the most significant influence in my career has been my wife. Her unwavering support and the peaceful, stress-free environment she creates have allowed me to fully focus on my work with a clear mind. The sacrifices she has made for my career are immeasurable, and her understanding and encouragement have been fundamental in every achievement I’ve had.
I’ve also had the privilege of working with exceptional leaders throughout my career. Early on, several senior figures within the company recognized my potential and provided me with opportunities that pushed me to grow. I was entrusted with key responsibilities at a young age, which not only accelerated my professional development but also allowed me to mature into the role I am in today. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Lastly, I believe that more than talent, it’s your spiritual beliefs that guide you on the right path. I’ve always felt that being grounded in these values has been instrumental in attracting the right influences and associations throughout my career. It’s difficult to list all the names because I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many inspiring individuals who have had a hand in my success.
Heritance Aarah is celebrated for its seamless blend of Maldivian tradition and modern luxury. Could you share your involvement in the resort’s design and conception?
When we embarked on the journey to create Heritance Aarah, we recognized that we were entering a challenging and competitive market. We took a step back to analyze the landscape and identify gaps that existed within the Maldivian hospitality sector. While many resorts were focusing on luxury experiences, we found that few were offering authentic local experiences that truly reflected the rich culture and heritage of the Maldives.
With the Heritance brand’s DNA centered around heritage and inheritance, our guiding slogan became “Where Tradition is Alive.” This philosophy drove every decision we made during the resort’s design and conception. From the architecture to the decor, we aimed to create an environment that not only exuded modern luxury but also celebrated the essence of Maldivian culture.
Our commitment to this vision extended to how we present ourselves as representatives of the resort. At trade shows and industry events, our team proudly wears traditional Maldivian attire, marking us as the first resort chain to embrace this practice. We believe that this visible commitment to our roots reinforces our brand identity and fosters a deeper connection with our guests.
To enhance the local experience, we curated a range of cultural activities for our guests, from traditional Maldivian dance performances to cooking classes featuring authentic recipes passed down through generations. One of our proudest achievements was developing a lacquer-painted corporate gift that we give to our partners, showcasing local craftsmanship and artistry.
It’s gratifying to see that our initiatives have inspired other resorts to follow suit and incorporate local experiences into their offerings. By highlighting the beauty of Maldivian culture alongside modern luxury, we not only differentiate ourselves but also contribute to preserving our heritage for future generations. At Heritance Aarah, we’re not just creating a resort; we’re telling a story one that connects our guests to the vibrant culture of the Maldives.
In a competitive luxury market, how does Heritance Aarah differentiate itself in terms of guest experience and unique offerings?
At Heritance Aarah, we strive to redefine luxury by offering a distinctly personalized and immersive experience that resonates with our guests on multiple levels. One of the key pillars of our differentiation lies in our culinary offerings. We are proud to be recognized as a premier culinary destination in the Maldives, having won the Most Outstanding Culinary Organization Award twice. Our culinary team has also demonstrated exceptional skill and creativity, bringing home 13 medals from prestigious events like the Culinary World Cup and Culinary Olympics. This commitment to culinary excellence allows us to provide our guests with extraordinary dining experiences that celebrate both local flavors and global cuisines.
In addition to our culinary prowess, we focus on creating unique moments that elevate the guest experience. From private dining on secluded beaches to bespoke wellness programs, every aspect of our service is designed to cater to the individual preferences of our guests. We believe that these tailored experiences foster deeper connections between our guests and the breathtaking surroundings of the Maldives.
Moreover, our commitment to sustainability and community engagement further distinguishes us in the luxury market. We actively involve our guests in local initiatives, giving them a sense of purpose and connection during their stay. By supporting local artisans and engaging in eco-friendly practices, we not only enhance the guest experience but also contribute to the preservation of the beautiful environment that surrounds us.
At Heritance Aarah, we are dedicated to creating a holistic experience that goes beyond mere luxury one that engages the senses, nourishes the spirit, and fosters a meaningful connection to the rich culture and natural beauty of the Maldives.
What are some of the most significant challenges you face in the luxury tourism market, and what strategies are you employing to address these challenges effectively?
One of the most significant challenges we face in the luxury tourism market is differentiation in a rapidly evolving landscape. The Maldives has long set the benchmark for innovation and luxury experiences, and as competition intensifies, maintaining a unique offering becomes increasingly difficult. Coupled with this is the rapid pace of technological advancement, which continuously reshapes guest expectations and preferences.
To address these challenges, we have adopted a multifaceted approach:
Continuous Innovation: We prioritize innovation in our offerings by regularly evaluating market trends and guest feedback. This proactive approach allows us to introduce fresh concepts that resonate with our clientele.
Tailored Experiences: Understanding that luxury travelers seek personalized experiences, we focus on customization at every touchpoint. By leveraging guest data and insights, we curate unique itineraries that reflect individual interests, whether that’s private excursions, wellness retreats, or culinary adventures. This level of personalization not only sets us apart but also fosters deeper connections with our guests.
Sustainability and Authenticity: Today’s luxury travelers are increasingly conscious of sustainability and the cultural impact of their travels. At Heritance Aarah, we are committed to sustainable practices and community engagement, which resonate with eco-conscious travelers. By offering authentic local experiences and showcasing Maldivian culture, we create meaningful interactions that enrich our guests’ stays.
Investment in Talent: We believe that our people are our greatest asset. We invest in the continuous training and development of our team, ensuring they are equipped to deliver exceptional service and anticipate guest needs. This focus on talent not only enhances the guest experience but also fosters a culture of innovation and excellence within our organization.
Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborating with local artisans, chefs, and cultural ambassadors allows us to infuse authenticity into our offerings. By building strong partnerships within the community, we can provide guests with unique experiences that highlight the rich heritage of the Maldives.
In conclusion, while the luxury tourism market presents its share of challenges, our commitment to innovation, personalization, sustainability, and community engagement positions Heritance Aarah as a leader in delivering unparalleled guest experiences. We embrace change and continuously seek ways to elevate our offerings, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of luxury hospitality in the Maldives.
Sustainability is a key focus in tourism today, and Heritance Aarah has made strides in this area. How do you ensure your sustainability initiatives are not just resort-driven but also involve and benefit the local Maldivian communities? (share an example of a successful community-led project?)
At Heritance Aarah, we recognize that true sustainability extends beyond the boundaries of our resort; it must encompass and uplift the local communities that surround us. Our sustainability initiatives are carefully designed to be inclusive, ensuring that they benefit both our guests and the Maldivian people. Here’s how we achieve this:
Local Sourcing: We prioritize purchasing goods and services from local markets, supporting local farmers, fishermen, and artisans. This not only strengthens the local economy but also ensures that our guests enjoy authentic Maldivian experiences. By integrating local products into our culinary offerings and resort amenities, we create a direct link between our operations and the community.
Community Engagement Programs: We actively involve local communities in our sustainability initiatives. For example, we organize workshops and training sessions to educate community members about sustainable practices and eco-friendly farming techniques. These initiatives empower locals to adopt sustainable methods, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and fostering a sense of ownership over their natural resources.
Collaborative Conservation Efforts: We partner with local NGOs and environmental organizations to undertake conservation projects that benefit both the environment and the community. This includes marine conservation efforts, such as coral reef restoration and marine biodiversity monitoring. By involving local fishermen and residents in these projects, we create a sense of shared responsibility for preserving the Maldives’ unique ecosystems.
Cultural Heritage Preservation: Understanding the importance of cultural heritage, we integrate local traditions and customs into our guest experiences. The resort features a live Maldivian Village Museum which gives a glimpse into the traditional Maldivian way of life. This not only enriches our guests’ stays but also promotes appreciation for Maldivian culture among visitors. We host cultural events, craft workshops, and traditional cooking classes that engage local artisans, ensuring they benefit directly from tourism.
Investment in Education and Capacity Building: We are committed to supporting local education initiatives. By collaborating with local schools, we provide resources, training, and scholarships to students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism. This investment in education empowers the next generation, enabling them to participate meaningfully in the industry and ensuring the longterm sustainability of tourism in the Maldives.
Guest Participation: We invite our guests to take part in our sustainability initiatives through hands-on activities such as beach clean-ups, tree planting, and local community projects. This engagement not only fosters a deeper connection between our guests and the Maldivian culture but also reinforces the idea that their travel choices can make a positive impact.
At Heritance Aarah, we believe that sustainability is a shared journey. By collaborating with local communities and creating opportunities for mutual growth, we strive to ensure that our initiatives are impactful and sustainable, contributing to the wellbeing of both the environment and the people of the Maldives. This holistic approach not only enhances our guests’ experiences but also ensures that tourism becomes a force for good in the communities we touch.
Does Heritance Aarah have any exciting or secret plans in the pipeline that you can share with us?
Absolutely, we have several exciting projects in the pipeline at Heritance Aarah! While I must keep the specifics under wraps until their official launch, I can assure you that these initiatives are designed to significantly enhance our guests’ experiences and further our commitment to sustainability.
One area we’re focusing on is the introduction of innovative wellness programs. We recognize that wellness is becoming an increasingly important aspect of luxury travel, and we’re committed to creating offerings that not only rejuvenate the body but also nourish the soul. These programs will incorporate local traditions, natural elements, and sustainable practices, ensuring a holistic approach to wellness.
Moreover, we are always exploring how we can innovate and elevate the guest experience. Our team is continuously brainstorming new ideas and concepts that align with the evolving desires of our guests. This dedication to enhancing experiences is not just about introducing new features; it’s about creating memorable moments that resonate with our visitors long after their stay.
Rest assured, as we move closer to unveiling these initiatives, we will share more details. For now, I can confidently say that our upcoming projects reflect our ongoing passion for providing exceptional luxury experiences while embracing our rich Maldivian heritage and commitment to sustainability. Stay tuned for what’s to come!
Adaaran properties are renowned for being family-friendly, and as a family man yourself, how do you envision the future of travel for the next generation, and what values do you hope to instill in your children (or grandchildren) about exploring the world?
As a family, we believe that travel is one of the most profound forms of education for our children. It opens their eyes to the beauty of diverse cultures, the importance of environmental stewardship, and the significance of forging connections across borders. I envision a future where travel not only becomes more sustainable but also serves as a vehicle for personal growth and understanding.
In my family, we prioritize experiences that enrich our lives. I hope to instill in my children the values of curiosity and respect for the world around them. I want them to appreciate the stories behind each destination and the people they encounter, understanding that every culture has its unique perspective and wisdom to offer.
Moreover, I believe it’s crucial to teach them about environmental responsibility. As we explore various places, we must also recognize our role in preserving the natural beauty and resources of those destinations. This means practicing sustainable tourism and leaving the places we visit better than we found them.
Ultimately, I hope my children will view travel as an opportunity to create meaningful connections and a chance to contribute positively to the communities they visit. By nurturing these values, I trust they will grow into compassionate global citizens who embrace the world with open hearts and minds, continuing a legacy of exploration and respect for generations to come.
If you could create a personal mantra that captures your life philosophy in just a few words, what would it be?
This mantra embodies my core beliefs and guides my journey both personally and professionally. “Believe” reflects the importance of having unwavering faith in myself and my team. It’s about recognizing our potential and embracing challenges with confidence.
“Empower” emphasizes the significance of collaboration and uplifting those around me. I believe that when individuals feel valued and supported, they can achieve incredible things together.
Lastly, “Evolve” speaks to the necessity of pushing boundaries and embracing change. In a dynamic industry like tourism, continuous growth and innovation are vital. This mantra serves as a constant reminder that success comes from believing in ourselves, empowering one another, and always striving to evolve into something greater.

The Maldives, renowned for its stunning encounters with majestic pelagics and expansive schools of fish, also reveals a hidden paradise for macro diving enthusiasts. Beyond the allure of whale sharks and manta rays, this tropical haven offers a wealth of intricate marine life waiting to be discovered.
With a diverse array of marine ecosystems, from vibrant coral reefs and seagrass meadows to mangrove forests, the Maldives presents exceptional macro diving experiences. Its unique reef systems, teeming with life even in smaller areas, ensure that every dive uncovers new and fascinating details.
While the Maldives is celebrated for its large oceanic creatures, it is equally captivating for those who revel in the minutiae of marine life. Nearly every dive site is teeming with a mix of large and small fish. Cleaner wrasses, performing their essential cleaning duties, and fish like the emperor angelfish and peacock wrasse, during their juvenile stage, display distinct appearances and are commonly seen, offering a glimpse into this bustling underwater world. Among the smaller fish, gobies and blennies are favorites, with the exclusive Little Combtooth Blenny and the harlequin filefish adding to the variety. The Maldives also hosts its own “Nemo” cousin, the Maldives Anemonefish, or Black-Finned Anemonefish, which, along with its baby eggs, can be spotted on the reefs. For those with a keen eye, masterfully camouflaged fish such as the ornate ghost pipefish, painted angler fish, and paper scorpionfish can be found among the corals.
Nudibranchs and sea slugs add another layer of intrigue to the Maldives’ macro diving scene. These colorful sea slugs inhabit seagrass, coral reefs, wrecks, and even structures like jetties. With over 100 recorded species, including dorids, dendronotids, aeolids, and other sea slugs, the Maldives offers a stunning variety of these marine mollusks. Unique native species like Moridilla Maldivensis and Phyllidia koehleri make for exciting finds, and some sites even boast hundreds of nudibranchs.
The nooks and crannies of the Maldives’ underwater habitats are rich with crustaceans. Encounters with shrimps and crabs are common, with cleaner crew members such as the Banded Coral Shrimp and Skunk Cleaner Shrimp frequently observed. Standout species like the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, known for its extraordinary vision and powerful punch, and the visually captivating harlequin shrimp add to the diverse crustacean population.
Despite its modest size on the map, the Maldives boasts the seventh largest reef system in the world, with one of the most diverse marine ecosystems. Home to over 250 recorded species of corals, and 1,200 species of fish, the Maldives’ coral formations reveal a vibrant and intricate world. From colorful Brain Corals and Mushroom Corals to tiny Zoanthids, each coral showcases a range of colors, patterns, and textures when examined up close.
To fully appreciate and photograph the Maldives’ macro life, specialized equipment such as macro lenses and magnifying masks is essential. Local guides with a keen eye and deep knowledge of marine habitats can significantly enhance your chances of spotting elusive creatures. Adopting a patient approach with slow, careful movements helps avoid disturbing delicate marine life, while maintaining buoyancy control protects these fragile environments.
Exploring various dive sites, including considering night dives, can unveil a host of fascinating nocturnal behaviors and creatures. The Maldives invites you to discover the enchanting world of macro diving, where every dive promises to reveal new and mesmerizing details. Embrace the adventure and immerse yourself in the vibrant, intricate beauty of this underwater paradise.

When people think of the Maldives, they imagine sundrenched beaches—places where fashion effortlessly blends with the tropical landscape. But beyond the breezy resort wear that often accompanies these island getaways, the Maldives is home to a rich cultural heritage.
At the heart of this cultural richness lies the Dhivehi Libaas and its intricate Kasabu Bovalhu, which represent a fascinating cultural melting point of Maldivian tradition.
We had the pleasure of exploring this cultural gem with Fathimath Naduha AbdulMuhsin (@ Gathaatales), a radiographer turned expert on the Kasabu collar. Naduha’s dedication to preserving and teaching the art of this remarkable attire provides a deeper understanding of its historical and cultural significance.
The Dhivehi Libaas, translating to Maldives Dress, is a knee-length garment featuring long sleeves and an underskirt (Feyli). The centerpiece of this attire is the Kasabu Bovalhu, an intricately embroidered neckline made from a blend of imported cotton, silk, and metallic threads. Known as Kasabu Viyun, this embroidery showcases a dazzling array of colors— green, gold, silver, red, and black—arranged in elaborate designs that reflect the fusion of cultural influences.
The craftsmanship of the Kasabu Bovalhu involves a distinctive set of tools: a short wooden vessel called a Gathaa Fai, a cloth cushion known as the Gathaafaige Boa for securing the threads, and about 34 wooden weights—sometimes fashioned from fish bones— to stabilize the threads. Additionally, the process incorporates three distinct ribbons: Hiru,Bagiyaa, and Rodhigandu.
Naduha’s insights reveal that the art of creating Kasabu and Libaas has been an integral part of Maldivian culture for generations. This traditional craftsmanship, passed down through families and communities, served as both a means of relaxation and a deep connection to cultural heritage. Her use of X-ray imaging to study a “Ranrihi”libaasuncovered the historical use of precious metals like silver and gold, further illuminating the garment’s rich legacy.
Situated in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives has long been a crossroads of Eastern and Western influences. This unique geographical position has enabled the Kasabu Bovalhu to evolve into a garment that embodies a vibrant cultural melting point. Theories suggest connections to Egyptian craftsmanship, African artistic traditions, and Middle Eastern and North African Bedouin weaving techniques, illustrating a dynamic cultural integration.
Trade with regions such as the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East has played a significant role in shaping the design of the Kasabu Bovalhu. Although older libaas may feature different color patterns and techniques, the core pattern of the Kasabu Bovalhu has remained consistent, showcasing its enduring significance and cultural unity.
According to Ahmed Shafeeq’s writings, the Kasabu Bovalhu, first worn by Radhun Muizzuddheen’s Kalhu Gomaa, has preserved its design since the 19th century. Historical photographs by German photographer C.W. Rosset and accounts from figures like Pyrard reveal a remarkable consistency in the garment’s appearance, highlighting its historical and cultural richness.
Today, the Kasabu Bovalhu and the Dhivehi Libaasstand as symbols of Maldivian identity and hospitality. They exemplify the country’s historical openness to various cultures and its ability to weave diverse influences into traditional practices.
Fathimath Naduha AbdulMuhsin’s ongoing efforts to preserve and teach the Kasabu Bovalhu ensure that this rich tradition remains a vibrant cultural melting point, blending tradition and innovation for future generations.
My art is very emotive and raw. Oftentimes it’s very therapeutic to work through thoughts and feelings by painting and as such, to explore themes of identity and self.
What inspired you to pursue art? How long have you been creating art?
I’ve been fortunate to have my parent’s support from childhood to pursue art. So in that sense, I have been expressing myself creatively for as long as I can remember. Over the years I have experimented with different visual mediums and am grateful for all the experiences that continuously help me grow as an artist.
How would you describe your art? What messages do you hope to convey through them?
I would say my art is very emotive and raw. Oftentimes it’s very therapeutic to work through thoughts and feelings by painting and as such, to explore themes of identity and self. Our traditional and cultural ways of life as Maldivians and how it’s evolving in the fast paced times is another such theme I find myself drawn to along with nature and our environment which is a huge inspiration to me.
My art has evolved over the years and it ranges from very detailed line work to abstract compositions but always with bright colours and graphic style.
In your opinion, how can art related activities elevate guest experiences in the tourism industry?
In my time as the resident artist in Kandima, I’ve had many beautiful experiences with guests where I helped them paint in art classes. While not all guests who joined came of their own accord, granted that
their family or partner wanted to paint together, everyone left smiling. Not only are they happy with making something of their own to take home as a souvenir or to even hang up in their home, the quality time getting in touch with their own creativity and good conversations makes a difference, especially in Maldives where the natural beauty is the main selling point for resorts.
What are your favourite mediums to use and why?
Digital medium for most client works with the ease of changes it affords. I tend to work with acrylics more often due to their drying time however I now love using mix media for paintings to also explore textures.
How do you handle creative blocks? Can you tell us some of the things you do to maintain your productivity?
It’s definitely a struggle to get over periods of time where it’s been difficult to create. Waiting for the right inspiration might not work well given that one’s skill is also dependent on muscle memory which needs to be constantly practiced. With that in mind I try to get back into sketching and doodling whenever I can.
Who are some of your favourite artists and how have they influenced your work?
There are many local artists whose work I’ve admired and influenced my own. Afumeeha, Mamdhuh, Araaka, Toxicrew, Gulsampa, Huda, KethiStudio and Iman Rasheed to name a few. I like to observe and take note of how another artist has expressed a certain emotion or detail in even just colours and learn what I love about it and use that feeling when I paint or draw and see how it translates.
To keep making a lot of art and experimenting to explore different mediums and subject matter and not be confined to one.
With social media and access to so many artists around the world, it’s sometimes overwhelming with the amount of content we have come to expect from artists to keep the hype. It’s sometimes daunting to even post and share something. However what matters is that you keep on creating and working on improving your art.
How do you think local art can be blended into the tourism experience? What impact can it have on the overall guest experience?
I believe that the tourism sector has always been linked to art but it’s only in the recent years that more local artists are getting opportunities. It’s very important that art and artists are both regarded with the high value we can bring to the resorts as murals or paintings and even guest experiences as resident or guest artists. Not only can artists assist in the paintings but the real value is how we can connect as Maldivians to the guests who come to appreciate our country.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey evolved over the years?
Growing up in a Ski resort in the Swiss Alps, I was always intrigued by tourism and its global reach. Having started after secondary school with a chef’s apprenticeship at Hotel Pardenn in Klosters Switzerland, I gained international hospitality experience spanning more than 35 years, including F&B and management roles with luxury hotels in Switzerland, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives.
I took up my first general manager post at Kurland Hotel and Polo Club in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, subsequently moving into the same role with Mövenpick Jeddah Al Nawras in Saudi Arabia, Mövenpick Hotel & Spa Bangalore in India, and Oberwaid in St Gallen, Switzerland.
My journey in the Maldives began in 2016 as Regional General Manager for Diamonds Athuruga and Thudufushi Maldives, adding Sandies Bathala Maldives to my responsibilities in 2018. I then joined Dusit Thani Maldives in 2019 for three years, followed by Alila Kothaifaru Maldives in 2022.
Can you share some of the significant changes you have witnessed in the luxury hospitality sector throughout your career and how you have adapted to the evolving trends and guest preferences?
One significant change has been the shift towards self- centric, more personalized, and immersive guest experiences. Guests now seek unique, bespoke
experiences rather than just luxury amenities. In response, we’ve integrated more local culture into our offerings and embraced technology to enhance personalization. For example, at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, we use guest data extensively to tailor experiences and offer custom excursions. Additionally, sustainability has become a crucial focus, and we’ve adapted by truly implementing eco-friendly practices and promoting responsible tourism.
What are some of the unique offerings at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives that distinguish the resort apart from other luxury resorts?

The resort’s ecofriendly approach uses locally sourced materials and sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact. Its oversized beach villas feature expansive, open-plan spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, providing stunning views of the turquoise waters and pristine beaches, ensuring a luxurious experience while preserving the island’s natural splendor.
Additionally, we emphasize authentic local experiences, such as guided cultural tours and Maldivian culinary classes. Alila Kothaifaru also invests in empowering the local community through internship, employment, and partnership opportunities, in line with the resort’s holistic sustainability framework.
How does Alila Kothaifaru include Maldivian culture and heritage into the guest experiences, and what impact does it have on the overall experience?
To integrate local tradition has always been my passion. At Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, we immerse our guests in Maldivian culture through a variety of
enriching experiences. We offer traditional cuisine, vibrant cultural performances, and local arts and crafts. Guests can participate in Maldivian cooking classes, explore the Maldives’ history through storytelling by our cultural ambassadors, and engage in unique activities such as the “Art of Coconut” and “A Day in the Life of a Maldivian.” These authentic experiences deepen the connection to the destination, fostering a meaningful and immersive stay that bridges our guests with the local community and culture.
The festive season is nearing. Could you share some of the festivities planned for Alila Kothaifaru Maldives?
This festive season, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives is thrilled to offer a range of special events. We’ll feature themed gala dinners with international and local cuisines, live music and dance, and exclusive private dining experiences. Our celebrations also include charity events, captivating shows, wellness retreats and underwater adventures with Santa Claus.
We’re committed to creating a joyful, mindful and memorable holiday experience for our guests to escape from their daily life.
If you weren’t in the hospitality industry, what other career path would you have chosen?
If I weren’t in hospitality, I might have pursued a life within the tourism industry, probably in the airline industry.

A faint blue streak across an ink-black sky forewarned the approaching dawn. A middle-aged man carried on with his post-fajr walk, deep in thought, intently staring up at the heavens he was so familiar with. Nisfu (Yusuf) was well-known as “Handhegirin” in these parts since his appointment as Home Minister to Sultan Usman from Fehendhoo. There was a sense of change in the air as he spotted a small paddle boat and her two oars approaching the Furamale’ (Pre-Eminent Male’) beach where he stood. The vessel fatefully thudded against the eroded rise
along the coastline, and a small shriek pierced the deep blue morning as Gólhâvehi Kan’bulo fell belly-first onto the beach, much to the concern of her husband, Fageeru (poor) Hilali Kalo. That very morning, Handhegirin was overheard telling Sultan Usman that a pregnant “toad” had “belly flopped” into Male’ and that under no circumstance should they be permitted residence on the island, for grave misfortune will befall the Sultan should he do so. “We musn’t make life even harder for the poor couple,” replied the Sultan.
Soon, the expectant couple were granted permission to settle down at the outskirts of the city around Lonuziyaaraiykolhu where the Dhun’gethi (Glory Bower) trees grew wild. The couple were ordered to tear down their thatched palm house after Handhegirin deemed the moment too auspicious. Always a step ahead, Gólhâvehi Kan’bulo instructed her husband to break the stilts holding up the structure. The King’s intervention allowed them to reconstruct the house again; the new stilts were placed right atop the old ones, foiling the old Vizir’s plans.
It was around the same time that Handhegirin was also expecting a child. Even though his meticulous planetary calculations showed that his son will be born at a prosperous time, the Hilali twin brothers were born at that time. Handhegiri’s son, Mohamed Manik was born soon after Hassan and Hussain, all of whose fates intertwined throughout what would result in the chaotic, violent, and revolutionary 180-year-old Hilali Dynasty. .
The manipulations of the Vizir didn’t end there, however, as he convinced the Sultan that the “kind” thing to do would be to take one of the twins under his wing and raise him in his household. The younger Hussain was taken from his mother’s arms, while the older Hassan was sent off without warning with a ship from Noonu Landhoo when he was nearing his teenage years. The infamous narrator of Maldivian folklore, Buraara Mohamed Fulhu touted that an unnamed mysterious vessel laden with gold and numerous treasures was discovered by Hassan one day in Landhoo. At which moment he decided to take over the Sultanate, we can only guess.
He arrived with a crew to Male’ and convinced the Sultan it was a good idea to leave the capital on a sharkfishing expedition in the rough outskirts of the atoll - only he wasn’t able to join the Sultan at departure after saying he was going home to get the gear. The Sultan soon grew impatient and set off with his cabinet (including Handhegirin and his son Mohamed Manik) as well as the younger Hussain. Legend says that upon hearing the gunshot announcing the Sultan’s leave via Gaadhookolhu (eastern Malé harbor), Hassan made
his way to the Nabus-khana (palace drumhouse) and banged the drums and essentially calling upon both military units into the fold and succeeding with the coup.
Somewhere between Male’ and the Funadhoo islet, the Sultan’s barge made a last-ditch effort to turn around and return just as Hussain jumped overboard. For all to overhear, Hussain is said to have suggested that the Sultan settle down in Kolhumadulu Guraidhoo which Handhegirin famously shouted, “Hassan, then Mohamed (his son)”. Hussain is said to have replied, “Hassan, then Hussain, then Mohamed”.
Sultan Hassan-ul-Hilali Sri Vira Bovana Maharadhun officially ascended the throne with all the pomp and circumstance of the coronation (Koli) upon the death of Sultan Usman while still in exile in Guraidhoo in 1388. The Fehendhoo Rasgefaanu Ziyaarai (monument) and grave still stand today. As for Handhegiri, his son became Dhanna (learned) Mohamed Rasgefaanu, about 23 years after the decade-long reign of Sultan Hassan ended with his death. It was truly Hassan, then Hussain, then Mohamed.

General Manager
Ifuru Island Maldives
At Ifuru, we focus on providing a fun and lifestyle-oriented stay. We not only offer an all-inclusive meal plan but also ensure it’s a premium all-inclusive experience.
How did you know hospitality was your calling, and how has the industry changed over the four decades of your career?
I come from a hospitality family and grew up in a hotel. It was natural for me to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather and father and pursue a career in hospitality. When I was young, I started out as a pastry chef. As I grew older, I transitioned into operations, sales & marketing, and eventually into resort management.
In the last four decades, the internet and OTA booking platforms have transformed not just the hospitality industry, but all major industries. While operations have become easier with the help of new tools, the importance of providing excellent service remains unchanged. Hotels & resorts have evolved in appearance and amenities, offering more lifestyle, active, and relaxing options to everyone
How do you adapt to the ever-changing hospitality trends and customer preferences to ensure the highest standards of service?
To adapt to new trends in hospitality management, it’s important to stay informed through industry publications and networks. Engage with customer feedback to gain insights into changing preferences. Invest in training for staff on new technologies and customer service practices. Enhance communication with guests and personalize their experiences.
Can you tell us a bit about the Premium All-inclusive offerings at Ifuru Island Maldives? How do you think it enhances the overall guest experience?
At Ifuru, we focus on providing a fun and lifestyleoriented stay. We not only offer an all-inclusive meal plan but also ensure it’s a premium all-inclusive experience. This means that all our restaurants, including the daily changing buffet, Palm Grill, and waterfront à la carte menus, are available to our guests without any additional charges
Do you enjoy skydiving? What are some of the offerings at Ifuru which makes it the perfect dropzone?
I haven’t tried skydiving yet, but I’m really looking forward to trying it soon. I can say for sure that there are no better places in the world for skydiving. This is based on the experiences of our guests and the jumps we’ve had here in the past years. Floating down to one of the four drop zones, you can enjoy the beautiful
blue, clear waters, and coral. What more could anyone ask for in one of the best resort locations in the world, offering activities all year round?
If you weren’t in the hospitality industry, what other career path would you have chosen?
When I was young and up until my mid- 20s, I never considered not working in hotels. However, for a brief period, I did contemplate becoming a doctor.

The Maldives as a tourist destination is more than just the iconic sunsets, crystalclear waters, and postcard-worthy resorts. There is an intricate tapestry woven behind these picturesque scenes that transforms this destination into the paradise we all know and love. At the heart of it all lies safety in its many forms – occupations, food, and fire – ensuring that guests can enjoy the Maldivian experience without a
worry in the world (aside from perhaps the question of which cocktail to try next).
Safety is not just a checkbox; it’s the secret ingredient that makes a fun vacation into a memorable adventure, allowing guests to relax, explore, and soak in the tropical sun. From behind the kitchen doors to resort corridors or during a fire drill, safety keeps stress at bay and joy at the forefront.
LET’S DIVE INTO THE KEY AREAS WHERE SAFETY TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT IN ENSURING THE PERFECT ISLAND VACATION:
It’s true nothing ruins a vacation quite like food poisoning. Tourists come to the Maldives to savour fresh seafood and exquisite cuisines, and food safety procedures ensure their only takeaway is a delightful memory and not a stomach bug.
Key ingredients for food safety include proper handling of food and its storage, allergen management, and sustainable sourcing.
Proper food handling and temperature control are vital to prevent contamination. No one wants an unexpected ‘extra ingredient’ in their dinner! With diverse guests come various diets and allergies, transparent labeling and ingredient management are crucial to avoid accidental emergencies. Ensuring that the produce is fresh and sustainably sourced guarantees the quality of the meals is exceptional.
With high standards of food safety, tourism businesses keep guests healthy, their standard of services excellent, and their kitchens humming with happy diners.
While flames may seem at odds with a tropical paradise picture, fire safety is a crucial element of the equation. In an industry built on hospitality, a single fire incident can cause serious damage—not just to property but to lives and reputations. Some of the key fire safety practices include ensuring fire prevention systems such as smoke detectors, fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency exits are in place.
With these measures in place, resorts and hotels minimize risks, allowing guests to focus on which spot on the beach is best for lying around rather than worrying about a fire.
Behind every seamless hotel experience lies a dedicated crew, and ensuring their safety is paramount. From housekeeping to chefs and tour guides, the tourism workforce spans a dizzying variety of roles, each with its own set of risks.
Whether it is slippery floors or heavy luggage, tourism has its fair share of hazards. Safety measures like non-slip mats, lifting techniques, and hazard signage help protect employees from injuries, ensuring the operations are carried out smoothly.
Long hours in less-than-comfortable positions can take a toll on anyone. By providing proper workstations with supportive chairs, employees remain happy and healthy and, by default, are able to work efficiently.
From first aid to fire drills, well-trained staff are the backbone of safe operations. Employees who have undertaken the relevant training are better equipped for unforeseen circumstances, prevent accidents, and handle emergencies calmly.
Safety, the silent superstar, ensures that travelers have a holiday filled with fun, special moments, and, of course, safety. Whether it’s the quiet hum of a well-placed fire alarm or the unseen cleanliness of a kitchen, safety works tirelessly behind the scenes to foster joyful experiences. By ensuring that everything from culinary delights to fire safety is top-notch, businesses not only fulfill their legal responsibilities but also cultivate the trust and loyalty of their guests. In today’s tourism landscape, safety is paramount, and it’s easy to see why.

What can one say about raivaru, a form of poetry almost lost in the sands of time? This ancient Maldivian oral tradition was once a vibrant part of daily life, now it lingers on the fringes of modernity - yet it carries the whispers of a simpler, more melodic time. A time when words danced on tongues, and verses flowed as naturally as the waves on the shore. The lyrical sounds of raivaru were woven into the fabric of Maldivian life, expressing love, laughter, and the playful exchanges of the island communities.
Once upon an age, raivaru was more than just poetry; it was the heartbeat of communication. Islanders would exchange verses while tending to daily tasks –women collecting coconuts, men gathering under the shade of trees to jest with each other, or even social
critique directed at the powers that be. The verses carried messages of love, flirtation, and mockery, all wrapped up in a delicate rhythm that mirrored the ebb and flow of the ocean itself. Each raivaru was unique, with words that could be playfully rearranged, allowing the speaker to express themselves in clever and often humorous ways.
This free-form expression of raivaruwas spontaneous and artistic, the words crafted to roll off the tongue with a melodic charm. In its early days, raivaru had no strict structure; rather, it was a fluid and dynamic form of speech. Later, however, it was codified – perhaps to the dread of today’s school children– into stanzas of three to six lines, with specific rules governing the arrangements of syllables and sounds.
A performance of raivaru is not complete without its signature rhythm and melody. Traditionally, the poetry was recited without music, relying instead on the natural cadence of the speaker’s voice. This gave the verses a hypnotic quality, a lilting melody that made each recitation a unique performance. In the past, one might have heard raivaru recited under the stars during island gatherings or within the solemn courts of Maldivian sultans. In the royal courts, raivaru could be used as praise or, more cleverly, as veiled criticism of rulers.
As the Maldives has modernized, raivaru has gradually faded from the spotlight (with natural and casual use within communities dying off around the 1950s). Today it survives mainly in classrooms, where students reluctantly learn its structure. However, this formal education strips raivaru of its oncevibrant spontaneity, leaving many young Maldivians disconnected from its deeper meaning.
For older generations, raivaru remains a treasure, a reminder of a time when words and music were intertwined with everyday life. Efforts have been made to preserve this art form, but in an era dominated by globalized culture and modern entertainment, raivaru struggles to find a foothold. However, it continues to hold cultural significance, offering a window into Maldivian history and identity.
Ultimately, raivaruis more than just an ancient form of poetry. It is a testament to the creativity, humor, and emotional depth of the Maldivian people. Its words once served as a bridge between individuals, whether expressing love, jest, or critique, and though it may no longer hold the central role it once did, raivaru remains a crucial part of Maldivian culture. For those willing to listen, its verses still echo the rhythm of the ocean and the spirit of the islands.
In a world that moves ever faster, the slow, melodic cadence of raivaru reminds us to pause, listen, and appreciate the artistry of the spoken word—a tradition that, though fading, continues to leave its mark on the Maldivian soul.

The Maldives is a picture-perfect paradise with its azure waters and breathtaking natural beauty. Gazing into the endless blue, you might feel like you have entered a dream. And, beneath the shimmering surface lies an extraordinary underwater world, bursting with lively marine life and stunning coral gardens—a living tapestry of nature. Diving in these Maldivian waters truly feels like nirvana.
While pinpointing the best diving spots in this vast archipelago is challenging, one thing is clear: the capital city, Kaafu Atoll, is where diving adventures begin. It is celebrated for its striking underwater scenery and is recognized as one of the most explored diving areas in the Maldives. The northern parts boast some of the finest coral reefs, while the southern stretches are alive with manta rays, octopuses, moray eels, and other unique reef residents.
Banana Reef is the first dive site discovered in the Maldives, and it remains a beloved destination for both novice and seasoned divers. This protected marine area is renowned for its dramatic reef formations and abundant aquatic life. You can encounter sharks, trevallies, barracudas, and black snappers amidst stunning rock formations here. Divers often find themselves surrounded by schools of reef fish, including up to a thousand yellow snappers, humpback red snappers, and Oriental sweetlips, which add brilliant colors to the reef. The site is beginnerfriendly, with diving depths ranging from a minimum of 4 meters to a maximum of 30 meters.
Just 25 minutes from Hulhumale’ lies Black Faru, another must-visit dive site. The house reef is famous for encounters with Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, turtles, and sharks, providing an exhilarating underwater experience for divers. This site features depths from 5 to 30 meters, making it suitable for divers of all skill levels.
Another remarkable location is Coral Garden. This Giri-type reef is a favorite for its tranquil underwater environment and vibrant oceanic life. At depths ranging from 4 to 30 meters, divers can expect to see schooling reef fish, Oriental sweetlips, moray eels, and graceful stingrays.
At the heart of this diving paradise is Abdulla Hasrath (Hatthu). With over 32 years of diving experience, Hatthu’s journey began as a dive master on liveaboards. His passion for diving led him to work at various resorts from 1997 to 2010, where he honed his skills and deepened his knowledge of these breathtaking waters. In 2010, he founded Dive Club Maldives, which has since become a cornerstone of the Maldivian diving community.
Under Hatthu’s guidance, Dive Club Maldives has grown to offer unforgettable diving experiences, with a strong focus on safety, exploration, and a deep respect for the marine environment.
His expertise and dedication have enriched the diving community and played a crucial role in the ongoing exploration and preservation of the Maldives’ underwater wonders.
Whether you are a seasoned diver or a curious beginner, the allure of Kaafu Atoll lies in its ability to connect you to the dynamic pulse of the ocean. From the majestic coral formations to the bustling schools of fish, this subaquatic haven invites you to explore its depths and discover its secrets. With every dive, you become part of a greater narrative—a celebration of nature’s beauty.
