What an exciting time 2022 was for TLC! The past year has been invigorating, as we came together for the first time in years to celebrate postponed milestones, accomplishments, and initiatives for the greater good of the TLC community. This year our energy and motivation was renewed, and commitment to our mission of improving lives and expanding possibilities strengthened, as we appreciated our time being in the actual, live presence of others. We will never take that for granted! The success we experienced was a result of our cohesive community and generous donors that persevered through challenges and went above and beyond expectations.

We had another positive year of financial sustainability. We sought out as many funding opportunities as possible to strengthen our organization for now and in the future Our community of donors demonstrated their generosity by contributing support to those we serve for new programs and existing program enhancements, capital costs, and additional resources to ensure community health, safety, and success. TLC can continue to provide the highest quality therapies, education, and services because of our active donors.

TLC recognizes the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to make our organization strong and to meet the needs of our diverse community. We have always advocated for inclusion for individuals with disabilities. We have increased organizational initiatives to help promote an inclusive culture. We developed and analyzed a DEI survey

and created follow-up actions. We provided activities and discussion opportunities related to marginalized groups and specifically neurodiversity and racial equity. We expanded DEI knowledge for TLC employees and our Board of Trustees. Below are some of the other highlights of our year.

2022 TLC 70th Plus “Stronger Together” Gala

TLC was delighted to celebrate The Treatment and Learning Center's 70th and The Katherine Thomas School’s 25th anniversaries during our Stronger Together Gala held on April 28, 2022.

We hosted nearly 150 guests, along with our keynote speaker Randy Lewis from the disability initiative NOGWOG. The highlight of the evening

was recognizing our Champions of TLC, including Roberts Oxygen and Bob and Eveline Roberts, The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, GMMB and our TLC staff member of 25 years, Rema Haddad.

This event raised over $132,000 from event sponsorships and a live auction, as well as an additional $60,000 during the event and from those

unable to attend. Funds raised the night of the event support our Caring Neighbor Fund, which helps TLC provide services to individuals in our community who otherwise could not afford them. We are sincerely grateful for those who generously supported the Stronger Together Gala and helped make this event a tremendous success

2022TLCEventHighlights Annual Raffle

Year-end fundraising started off with our “Majestic 7-Day Alaskan Cruise Raffle.” The winning ticket was drawn on October 18th. The lucky winner was our very own Rhonda Dicken, who works at The Katherine Thomas School. TLC’s Alaskan Cruise Raffle was a resounding success, raising $18,200 for our programs and services.

Fall Luncheon

TLC’s 2022 Fall Luncheon was held on November 3rd at Lakewood Country Club.

Thanks to our generous sponsors and guests the event was an incredible success!

Highlights of the event included an inspiring testimony by a current KTS student and a

musical performance by a recent graduate of the school. The luncheon was also a celebration of Melissa Pappas and Athena Consulting, our TLC Champion.

2022TLCEventHighlights 31st Golf Classic

June 10th was a great day to host the TLC Golf Classic. The 54 golfers who participated in the event helped raise over $35,000 for TLC's programs and services. The highlight of the day was a blast from the past, Arnold Palmer, who stood by to congratulate our winners. We especially appreciate our committee members Guy Cooperthite and Andre Jaundoo for leading the charge.

Story

KTS student Isaiah Hamilton, and his mother, Tiffany Hamilton, have had a very busy year. Tiffany developed a new business concept of “activewear with a purpose”, and with Isaiah playing an integral role, brought the idea to life. Together they co-founded Victor Wear--a line of inspirational tee shirts, sweatshirts, and other activewear created with the goal of providing employment and other opportunities to the Autism community. "We want this to be a big successful brand that is primarily run and operated by people with disabilities," Tiffany told 7News, on a story focused on Victor Wear (https://bit.ly/408nzK4).

Isaiah has flourished and applied entrepreneurial skills and instincts he did not know he possessed. He helps with the company's social media pages and designed the logo for Victor Wear. "I drew V, W and then after that a graphic designer finalized it," Isaiah said. He also assists with event planning and logistics, speaks to the media, and is expanding his role as the face/lead ambassador of the brand –all while attending high school at KTS and participating in extracurricular activities! Isaiah’s success has not gone unnoticed in the community The DC Chamber of Commerce recently announced their 2022 Small Business Award recipients, and Isaiah was recognized as a "Young Entrepreneur of the Year."

Isaiah attended the TLC 2022 Fall Luncheon and delivered a moving speech about how KTS has helped him grow into a confident and successful individual with a bright future Intimidating as it is for most students to speak in front of a large crowd, Isaiah bravely met the challenge with grit and poise. Overall Organization

Dr. Patricia Ritter was honored to be recognized as a “Woman Making History” by the Montgomery County Commission for Women and Montgomery Women Organization. She was recognized on social media (Facebook and Instagram) and through a panel presentation for this honor Dr Ritter was featured along with 30 dynamic women in Montgomery County during the month of March, for their 2022 Women Making History event.

TLC is very proud to be recognized across multiple categories as a “Winner” in the Washington Parent Magazine “Washington Parent Picks Reader’s Poll.”

With over 24,000 voters, the TLC community rallied (in high numbers!) to support our organization, recognizing the hard work and passionate nature of our clinicians and staff. It's an honor to be selected a winner, competing against highly-respected organizations in the disability and special needs field TLC was also recognized as a “Finalist” across multiple categories. This year was one of the most competitive, if not most competitive year, in Washington Parent Magazine history.

Outpatient Speech-Language and Occupational Therapy Departments

The Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Departments held a successful in-person summer camp program from June–August 2022.

The Outpatient Occupational Therapy Department began a collaboration with Howard County Head Start to provide OT consultations, screenings and direct services in four of their centers.

The Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Departments held several free occupational therapy, speech-language, and hearing screenings at multiple private schools

TLC Director of Clinical Programs Brigid Baker presented a workshop for teachers at Washington Hebrew School on Facilitating Fine and Gross Motor Skill Development in

classrooms to the Howard County Head Start Community Action Council Preschoolers.

The Family Hearing Center

The Family Hearing Center staff have been busy providing comprehensive hearing evaluations and hearing aid fittings to our community.

Over the past year, we have added new Managed Care groups to our referrals allowing us to fit patients who have hearing aid benefits through their insurance plans.

Speech-Language Pathologists presented a workshop for parents on literacy and language skills at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.

Speech-Language Pathologists attended the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk

The Speech-Language Pathology Department received a generous donation from the 100 Women Who Care in Lower Montgomery County, and were able to purchase several new AAC Devices.

Our Audiology office at Asbury Village in Gaithersburg has been seeing patients every Thursday for several years, and recently a Wednesday clinic was added due to the increase in residents who are in need of hearing healthcare.

Many Lower/Middle School teachers have been certified in Orton-Gillingham reading techniques.

KTS was awarded with three Recognition Badges for PBIS Effort. KTS students had artwork selected to be showcased virtually in the annual Celebrating Through Art: The First Lady's Mental Health Awareness Youth Art Display The Honorary Chair of the Campaign, Maryland Former First Lady Mrs. Yumi Hogan, joined to offer congratulatory remarks at this recognition event.

The Washington Natmobile visited The Katherine Thomas School over the summer, including famed Screech and Teddy. Students delighted in playing

games, drawing with sidewalk chalk, receiving cool Nats swag, and posing for pictures with Screech and Teddy. Screech and Teddy delighted our community and brought many smiles and laughter The Nats also featured The Katherine Thomas School at a game this fall! KTS’ own Dr. Nicole Abera was featured on the jumbotron.

The KTS High School Student Government Association led a week-long fundraising drive to benefit Universal Aid for Children, starting with a goal of $250. This goal was met and had to be increased within 24 hours thanks to the generosity of high school students, staff, and families Over $1,000 was raised by the end of the campaign!

Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling Department

Dr. Melissa Smith and the SpeechLanguage Pathology Department presented a workshop with Fusion Academy, "Changing the Paradigm of Neurodiversity: Acceptance, Inclusion, and Social Justice"

Robyn Davy presented a workshop to teachers at the Butler School entitled "The Circle of Security Workshop: A Roadmap to Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Needs".

Robin Mesnard, TLC Tutor, worked on a summer reading program for Butler Montessori School. Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling provided testing for youth aging out of foster care through Montgomery County Child Welfare Charmyn Henderson led the Howard County Head Start monthly parent group.

Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling renewed our contract with Sidwell Friends for psychological testing.

The Outcomes Service

TLC Outcomes completed its 11th successful Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) Survey. TLC Outcomes began in-person Supported Employment groups in November 2022. The groups met weekly and the focus is job readiness to prepare individuals for paid employment.

TLC Outcomes became an affiliate of the American Dream Network (ADEN) in the summer of 2022 and now provides support to individuals that want to work that receive Social Security benefits due to a disability Through Ticket to Work TLC Outcomes provides job readiness, job seeking and job retention supports, and follows the individual long-term as he or she works towards economic self-sufficiency or improves his or her economic situation through earnings.

Ashleigh Seager was nominated and won this year's State of Maryland

DDA Direct Support Professional of the Year Award

TLC Outcomes offers over 30 inperson Community Development Services (CDS) groups a week. Locations are up-county, mid-county and lower-county.

TLC Outcomes also offers more than 30 virtual CDS groups a week. Topics range from social and communication skills, to Job Club, Bingo, Mad Libs, Sports Club and many other topics After many months of virtual services during Covid, TLC Outcomes resumed providing all of its Pre-Employment Transition Services (PreETS) in-person this year.
