A Show of Books Why The Song of the Lioness would make an excellent TV series Story by Andrew Linde Entertainment Editor
Author Tamora Pierce has written several series. The Song if the Lioness book series, with Alanna: The First Adventure
Avec bisous Ton ami, Ricardo
With so many wild theories about what is going on in Game of Thrones, now is better than ever for a book series to be adapted for TV. And with all of the wonderful fantasy adventures books out there, I wonder why HBO picked Game of Thrones? It’s an incomplete book series where the author is taking his sweet time writing the next one. The TV show is going to have to now move beyond the books. HBO wouldn’t of had this problem if they adapted The Song of the Lioness book series instead. The Song of the Lioness is a series of four books that follows a young girl named Alanna who just wants to be a knight. To that end she switches places with her brother so that he will get the training in magic that he has a sword. To do this she must pretend to be Alan, a secret which is hard for a growing girl to keep. As a TV show, this series has plenty to keep fans coming back for more. Alanna is very bright but can be brash at times. She She meets the Prince of her land, perhaps starting a romance with him. She also meets the king of the thieves in the city, catching his eye as well. Also, Alanna is a great symbol of what women can accomplish when the glass Alanna: The First Adventure, In the Hand of the Goddess, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant
ceiling isn’t holding them back. Over the course of the four books, Alanna defeats a few villains. She is the sole focus of the narrative, but the other characters have arcs as well. Her brother, Thom, becomes adept with magic and that makes him withdraw from others. He sees himself as better than everyone else, except his sister. His journey is just as interesting as her’s. I originally read these books in high school. They aren’t as gory or sexy as some from those topics. Part of Alanna’s narrative is her growth into womanhood and her fear of pregnancy. She wants to choose when to become a mother and not have that choice made by a man. She is also an outlier in years. Some groups aren’t kind to her. It also helps that there are over twenty books in total that take place in this same universe created by Tamora Pierce. Once Alanna’s story is done, the TV show could focus on another, such as her daughter’s. The

We’ve become so dependent on it where, if something were to happen—like if our Internet went out, for example, or our phone died, or there was something, anything, we relied on that didn’t work—we wouldn’t have anything else to do. We would just be kind of lost, and I think that’s bad in a way. Before, technology wasn’t that big. No one relied on it that much, and people still had things to do. Xavier Madrigal Mathematics

Probably one of my biggest pet peeves is when people are walking, but they’re on their phone, looking at it at the same time, but they’re going really, really slowly, just inching along. It just seems like if you can’t do both at the same time, pick one, and just text whoever, then stop, and when you’re done, just keep walking.

“What are your technological pet peeves?” I feel fat and lazy with how technology is now. Everything is easy to do. Upon entering this school’s campus, I turn Wi-Fi, but it seems that I just can’t anymore. Sometimes, I remember a funny video or picture that I had seen the day before and just want to show my friends, BUT I CAN’T! I communicate with most of my buddies through Facebook’s messenger app so we can meet up or something, but I never get connection and have to resort to my mobile data, which doesn’t even work at its full potential while on this campus. I receive “Connected to ‘Beachnet+’ (Secure),” but it quickly disconnects and I’m left with blank pages and errors while trying to surf the web and send people messages. It’s like my phone getting anywhere but closer to death from an overheating battery. I just want Wi-Fi! Is that so hard to understand?

Cultural Fusion Students accepting their multiracial realities Intro by Richard Mejia
Racial diversity is the vibrantly-thorned rose that has nourished the nation since the country’s inception. By Vanessa Moore I have enjoyed my experience as a bi-racial individual thus far in my life because it has been beautifully challenging. The beauty is in what the challenges have given me so far. Every single obstacle I have faced has offered me a grand opportunity to grow as a person. The first challenge I had to face was accepting how different I am, physically, from my family. My mom , who is 100% Polish, raised me on her own. I am half Polish and half African-American. Even though I am a mixture of both of my parents, I do not resemble either of them. That alone prompted people to ask my mother if I was adopted whenever we were out and about at the grocery store, park and school. It never bothered my mom, but it always made me feel isolated from my family as a child because I did not look like them. Being so young and realizing I did not mirror anyone in my family left
By Emily Ayers me confused and far removed from those who I loved. What made me different from her and others in my family was a negative presence in my mind. I had to learn through my interactions with other bi racial and multi-racial people about accepting the mix, my differences, and the mere beauty of two culturally different people coming together to create me, even if I do not look like either of my parents. I learned that there are more meaningful aspects about being family than physical characteristics. I embrace my differences now because of this experience and others in my life. I’ll never forget the various and similar moments that shaped me into the beautiful individual I am today.
“Instead of being instantly judged based on appearance, people are forced to see me as a human being .” — Emily
“What are you?” my co-worker asked me. “Are you Hispanic? You seem exotic, maybe Brazilian? Puerto Rican?” This guessing game happens constantly and it has taken time to appreciate the confusion that my ethnic background creates. To understand that my mystery allows me to transcend certain race-based boundaries created by stereotypes. There are always many puzzled faces and shocked expressions when I tell them that I am actually black and white; the result of AfricanAmerican, Native-American, Italian, German, Dutch-Scottish, and some Irish descent. They don’t see it. My hair isn’t curly enough, and I don’t quite have those “features.” Until recently, people not knowing my background made me feel like an outsider with no cultural ties. I was not black enough or white enough, but somewhere in between. As a child, a constant sense of displacement plagued me. I grew up with my mother’s family, my white side, and society let me know that I mom why I was so dark, or why she left me in the sun for so long. I once her skin and give it to me and then I It was an odd feeling when kids at school would ask if I was adopted. I would get defensive and explain how I had a white mother and a black father. And despite my mom’s constant reassurance that being two
races was special, I still felt confused I was always trying to prove myself, but white girls never saw me as one of them and neither did black girls. It wasn’t until high school that I actually felt accepted around black students, primarily. With this as a stepping stone, my self-growth and awareness was able to emerge as I explored what it meant to be a mixed girl. I sought out my own cultural identity and gained enough solely on my vision of what it meant to be multiracial. I found that each culture carries a rich history of its own, all of which I am entitled to have ties to. And although my journey to this point has taken twenty-one years, it is freeing to no longer look to society for approval. Feelings of irritation that used to come from people’s lack of knowing my race have been replaced by an understanding that their lack of perception means I can easily blend with various cultures. It is much nicer to be allowed to say who you are without people trying to do it for you. And instead of being instantly judged based on appearance, people are forced to see me as a human being

By Veronica Guillen-Craft My mom is a first generation Mexican-American, and my dad is “hapa” (half Caucasian and half Japanese), making me half Mexican, a quarter Caucasian, and a quarter Japanese. Growing up, my parents were divorced, so I was mainly raised in a Mexican-American household with my mom, brother, nana, and papa. My childhood was heavily influenced by my Mexican heritage, where I learned the value of family and a love for Mexican food, but my dad also instilled in me an appreciation for Japanese culture and food. While I always knew that I was multiracial, it wasn’t until middle school that I really became aware of the significance that is placed on race. Entering middle school, all my friends had gone to a school in different districts, so I was forced to start over and make all new friends. While race wasn’t all that significant in elementary school, in middle school it became one of the defining qualities in what group you were accepted into. Middle school is already a nightmare for a pre-teen girl, but throw in racial identity issues, and it’s a clusterfuck. While I am half Mexican and mostly identified with being Mexican-American, to many, I look predominantly Asian or “hapa.” Trying to find a place where I fit in was something I struggled with through most of middle school, and somewhat in high school. I

By William Odis Martin always felt like I wasn’t Hispanic enough to fit in with the Hispanic kids, Asian enough to fit in with the Asian kids, or white enough to fit in with the white kids. While I was never truly ostracized or bullied because of being multi-racial, I was definitely made aware of my otherness with nicknames like “Hello Kitty,” because of my Asian features, or “Blanca,” because of my pale skin. At one point growing up, I remember really wishing I had different features: that my skin was tanner, or my eyes were rounder, or my hair was blonde. I just wanted to look fully Caucasian, Mexican or Asian, so that I fit in. But since then, I’ve learned to appreciate my unique multiracial identity, and realize that because of it, instead of having just one heritage or culture to embrace, I have multiple. Now, every year for the holidays, my family acknowledges and celebrates the diversity in our family by having an American Thanksgiving, Mexican Christmas, and Japanese New Year.
My family tree has extremely deep multi-racial roots on both sides. My mom is first generation Peruvian-American, but both her parents were bi-racial. Her father was Afro-Peruano and her mom had Swiss and Spanish in her bloodline. My father’s family history in America can be traced back to the early Native American tribes of Choctaw and Cherokee. According to Ancestry.com, my family on both sides have been intermingling centuries before it would become socially acceptable. I remember spending countless hours with my grandparents and great-grandparents on my mom’s side in hopes that I could absorb even an ounce of their precious culture. I never felt like I needed my dad but as I grew up, my desire to learn about him and his side overwhelmed me. I knew inside there was half of “me” out there that was left unaccounted for. I did not know my dad growing up, and at points in my life, I believed he was dead. Whenever I would inquire about his heritage, I would get a pointed, “He’s WHITE” response from my mom. Finally after doing some solid investigative work on MySpace (unfortunately I AM OLD enough to have had one), I was able to locate my dad. After a few conversations on the phone, he made the eight-hour drive up to the Bay Area from the Mojave Desert to meet me and introduce me to my half brother and sisters. When we first met, I could see
tears rush into his deep-set eyes that were attempting to hide behind the industrial grade bifocals resting on his sharp face. Finally, one slid down his Choctaw red skin as we embraced for the first time in over 20 years. Immediately after we shared that touching moment, we fired up a doobie and cracked a couple of brew in an attempt to compose ourselves. We talked about everything from pastimes to psychedelics. He kind of reminded me of a cross between an aged Matthew McConaughey in “Dazed and Confused” and Christian Bale in “The Machinist”. He had my smile though—crooked and unsymmetrical. Never in my life would I have imagined him being so much like me. Where my mom and I clashed, we clicked. Although we grew up in completely different worlds, hundreds of miles apart, we had an undeniable kindred connection. Immediately I discovered where I inherited my stubbornness and unflattering hairline. Later on I would learn where I got my irrefutable competitive spirit, but one thing he blessed me with was a big heart. It forced me to consider the ancient argument that nature is more important than nurture, but more so that we are all one family. We are one race, the human race.

Do’s and Don’ts Of Studying
Story by Richard Mejia Managing Editor
Navagating through the storm that is homework
The easiest and hardest task for any college student to complete is studying. Just think about it. You simply review the material you’ve been taught, read a few chapters, take it all in, and there you go. It’s such an elementary process, so why aren’t students dedicating more time to their studies? Well, it’s complicated. College students now have part-time jobs (in some cases more than one), several extra-curricular activities to boost résumés, and family obligations. These are the typical excuses. You also have professional procrastinators, kids who don’t have their priorities straight, and a bevy of other not-so-great reasons. When studying, you always want to make sure you’re in a comfortable and quiet setting.
cool. There’s almost a “panicked energy” in the air and you better believe it’s contagious. Being able to relax and focus more time on your studies than your surroundings is an integral part to academic success. Keep away from distractions. Yes, I know going out the night before with friends is more enticing
and I get that picking up an extra shift means more money in your pocket, but you need to dedicate time to your studies! The holy grail of distractions is your phone. Regardless if you have access to a computer while studying, the little phone screen will always pop up and I’ve always felt that worst thing you could do as a student is cramming. I’m sure that might be the most common method of studying, given that it is the very last resort for those who either couldn’t or didn’t want to study earlier. Cramming over exhausts your mind and gives you a very small chance to pass with such poor preparation. What’s worse, you won’t remember that material after the project or exam passes. Ultimately, we are in school to learn and better ourselves so that we set ourselves up for success in the future. If you do not properly give yourself the time to study and retain the knowledge then what’s the point? Sure, you passed the class, but what did you believe in yourself and your studies. It’s all up to you.

VMAzed and Confused The looks on this year’s red carpet were anything but expected Story by Madison Gallegos Arts Editor The most important part of any awards show—besides the thing actually being awarded—is the fashion. Everyone wants to know who wore what and who wore who. And at this years Video Music Awards, celebrities’ The overall theme seemed to be bold and outrageous, although some opted for the classic, sexy look. Meanwhile, others *cough* men *cough* looked like they barely tried. Now before we talk about Miley, which is a whole ordeal on its own, let’s go through some of the best and worst looks of the night. The best looks (sorry but not surprising) came solely from the ladies. My top three favorite looks include: FKA Twigs in a stunningly sexy, mostly sheer, black dress by Atelier Versace; Nicki Minaj in a goddess-like and the least) gold dress by Labourjoisie; and Gigi Hadid in a gorgeous goldenrod half body suit, half dress by Emilia Wickstead. Rose in a jumpsuit and Chyna in a dress, both covered in big, colorful misogynistic slurs, such as “slut,” “bitch,” and “gold digger,” they passively protested the idea that a woman’s her worth. There were way more misses than hits, which makes it harder to decide which are the worst. Demi Lovato barely crossed the line between chic and what is … just not, as her geometric dress ended up just resembling pink tire tracks. Taylor Swift wore a sequined houndstooth crop top with matching joggers by Ashish. It was color blocked with gold, silver, and bronze, paired with black banded striped shoes with a gold pointed toe and a silver heel. It was all bad, and visually unappealing in all forms. Kim Kardashian was so close to chic in an army green Balmain dress ... well I guess head designer Olivier Rousteing was so close, had
he not added these baggy, oversized pockets, interfering with the curves of her body and ruining the overall aesthetic. Britney Spears made an appearance, and by Britney I mean 2000 Britney gone bad. Her too tight dress and Barney colored hair make her look like she’s going through a pre-midlife crisis—hard pass. Models Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne, in what I can only assume was an attempt to mix dressy and casual, ended up looking frumpy and almost underdressed. Speaking of underdressed, let’s talk about the men. They weren’t the stars of the show not match up to the glamour and Nick Jonas wore the same (like dude it’s not gonna make you look cool), Pharrell Williams attempted to rock denim on denim, Justin Bieber transformed into a middle-aged soccer mom overnight, and Kanye West had on a large shirt with

Similar to Lady Gaga when she pulled out all of those elaborately absurd costumes. Even Lady Gaga has grown up, taken a step back and classed it up. I think it’s time Miley does, too. We get it, you smoke weed, you’re not a little girl anymore, now let’s move on.
Recreating History Downtown Abbey costume design takes you to the twentieth century Story by Amanda Dominguez-Chio Literature Editor The beloved British period drama is ending! Downton Abbey, a show that follows the Crawley family and the lives of their servants, won my heart with it’s exciting, historypacked plotlines and complex characters. As time passes in the series, the clothing becomes less constrictive, allowing the hemlines to get shorter and reveal ankles. In one of my favorite moments of Downton Abbey, Lady Sybil, the youngest Crawley daughter, wears harem pants rather than the traditional post-Edwardian attire. The shock on her family’s faces always makes me laugh! I adore the attention to detail. We begin to see a lot of beads embedded on the women’s

Movies on the House: Jurassic World The true sequel to Jurassic Park
Jurassic World Run Time: 2hr 4 min Directed by: Colin Trevorrow Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio
Story by Jordan Scott Contributor Illustration by John Mueller Graphics Illustrator When it comes down to talking about Jurassic World people are broken down into two categories: those who have seen Jurassic Park (plus it’s sequels to a lesser extent) and those who haven’t. For those who have seen the original stick around a while and I will lay out how World compares to Park and what you will need to do to enjoy watching the newer entry. For those who haven’t seen Jurassic Park, why don’t you meet us down after the next two paragraphs? Okay Jurassic Park veterans, let’s get

This is a true sequel to the 1993 classic and it makes that clear in the themes it tackles: divorce and how children are impacted during the splitting of a family, the breaking down of someone’s walls when it comes to children, the way people connect during tragic circumstances, humanity’s vanity, how nature shows people their place in the world, and why it’s a good things millions of years separated us from dinosaurs. It even whose importance in Park seemed minimal but in World he plays a pivotal role. All of these themes and connections make one thing clear to me. Before sitting down in a theater or at home to watch Jurassic World, you should really watch Jurassic Park. This might be controversial to many people who saw Jurassic Park when they World is thriller/horror genres. The characters in the monsters with a few of them trying to eat our protagonists. Bryce Dallas Howard is the cold, emotionless, bottom-line focused manager of the theme park and she plays it as well as she can. I argue that the two leads should have switched roles: Pratt as the cold park manager uncle and Howard as you might agree it would have been more interesting but they both do what they can with the script they were given. The rest of the cast, including the always fantastic Vincent D’Onofrio, do well in their roles but nothing really stands out because the script isn’t the best. Remarks by the Future President and Solo Artist Extraordinaire in the State of the Union Address
By Kanye Asada
Fellow citizens of the universe: Bro, listen to the kids! We are 15 years into this new century. Fifteen years,
have dawned six studio albums onto this Earth where I grow as an artist and as God’s vessel on this planet. But my greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live. You don’t have to be scared of me, because I am loyal. Why are people so scared of creative ideas and so scared of truth? All I want to do is do good. I feel like I’m too busy writing history to read it. I liberate minds with my music. That’s more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or
whatever. But for me to have the opportunity to stand in front of a bunch of executives and present myself, I had to hustle in my own way. I can’t tell you how frustrating it was that they didn’t get that. No joke—I’d leave meetings crying all the time. George Bush doesn’t care about black people. Sometimes people write novels and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed. I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book’s autograph. I am a proud non-reader of books. I see stuff from the future, and I’m such a futurist that I have to slow down and talk in the present. I know I got angels watchin’ me from the other side. I don’t even wanna give myself any form of a title anymore. I’m not calling myself a genius. I’m not calling myself
a visionary. Only thing I could say is that I’m a servant. Bro, the problem was the contradiction. The contradiction for artists, but somehow was disrespectful to artists. I didn’t know how to say the right thing. You should only believe about 90 percent of what I say. As a matter of fact, don’t even believe anything that I’m saying at all. I could be completely fucking with you,
and the world, the entire time. And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president. If you have power, you should empower… The people in the people… Bro, the people chose me to be the people’s champ I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice. Deuces, Your future prez
“What’s Good, Miley?” Hey Miley, I’ve had the same hairstyle for a few years now and I need a new do. Everything By Miley Cyrus in the magazines is so overplayed. I want something new, different, and exciting. Something to make my ex-boyfriend drop his jaw at. Do you have any tips for a gal like me? -Tangled Girl Hey, Tangled Girl! New do? Do the dew ;) besides, you know what? I’ve heard so many girls say that they’re goin’ through the same #struggle as
you. Luckily, we as the females of our earth mother have the right to wear out hair however way we want. Don’t forget though, girlie, - only change up your “do” for you not for some penis popsicle! DO the shit you wanna do, gurl! Like smokin’ some of the plant or goin’ topless and puttin’ some glittery pasties on your nips. Anyway, here’s some sick hairstyles that are REALLY new, unique, and will totes change up your look: 1. Put in some dope cornrows in your hair. Like my girl, Kylie Jenner, cornrows is the new in. They’re ethnic and
exotic af! Rockin’ these bad boys will totally make you the hot “it girl” to start the trend in your area. 2. Get some dreads on your head, girl! Just go to the store and buy one of the high quality dreadlock wigs. They’re super different and so easy to manage. If they start to itch your head, like mine started to do at the VMAs, you can just take the wig off and just give your hair a weekend chill. With this sick do, you’re gonna shock everything with the way you embrace and wear other cultures!
3. Go for the Senegalese twists! You go into any hairbraiding hop in the Harlem and you’ll see all the ladies getting this. Phillipa Steele modeled this chic NEW hairstyle in Teen Vogue a couple months back. 4. If you’re feeling extra kinky, you can try out the bitchin’ bantu knots. Originating from Pinterest, you can totally DIY this on your own, gurl. That’s all I’ve got twerkin’ for you. Don’t forget to buy my rad new album. It’s like taking all the drugs at once.
