A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Our staff is well into another academic year of providing services and programs committed to shaping the professional, personal and spiritual growth of our students.

We continue to be blessed with a nearly full complement of professional staff. Our University Police Officers are experienced professionals dedicated to ensuring the safety of the University community. So far this semester, the department's outreach has connected us with over 1600 campus community members.

Remaining current in the accreditation process requires significant effort. This illustrates our continued commitment to professionalism in policing and our dedication to improving safety for our students, faculty and staff.

These publications are an opportunity to promote our efforts and the accomplishments of the department. I am always grateful to our staff and the professional services they provide on a daily basis. I am especially thankful to those of you who take the opportunity to read our publication each semester and for your continuous support.

University Police is continually developing new and innovative ways to increase public interactions. This approach to law enforcement allows the department to reach many individuals within the University community.

Our goal is to create collegiate relationships with students, faculty and staff so they feel safe on campus. If we succeed in making you feel safer, then we are doing our jobs.

The philosophy of The University of Scranton Police Department focuses on the expansion of community outreach efforts that enhance relationships with the campus community and support campus law enforcement at the University.

Rather than a traditional focus on militant policing to curb crime, outreach and educational efforts are aimed at softening the presence of the badge and uniform. Police officers fulfill basic law enforcement duties but conduct them in the spirit of the University’s Jesuit mission.

Programming is held in residence halls, on campus grounds and in collaboration with community partners.

You can find us playing corn hole with students at 11:00 PM during our "Games on Green" event or partnering with CHEW to offer ride sharing safety tips during Alcohol Awareness Week.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to interact with the officers as they patrol campus. Our goal is to be friendly and approachable in all situations. If you have a question, or if you are having a bad day, and want someone to talk to, come over and say, ‘hi.’

Whether offering traditional events, like "Coffee with Cops", or newer initiatives like "Pretzels on Patrol", the overarching goal is continued community interaction and increased campus safety.

At the end of the shift, when the badge and uniform come off, we are people just like you. By creating many different outreach opportunities, all officers within the department make connections to the community we serve.

SPOTLIGHT: STUDENT OFFICER PROGRAM Secret Service Director James Murray's Message "Attitude, Aptitude and Courage"

This past August during the Student Officer Academy Week, Secret Service Director James Murray, a University alum, gave remarks to the Student Officer Program's annual luncheon. It has been the tradition for the Student Officer Program to have a guest speaker with a career in law enforcement. Never in the program’s existence has a director of a federal agency come to speak.

One of the biggest highlights of his talk was the idea of “attitude, aptitude, and courage.” He mentioned that no matter what career student officers land, having these traits will help them obtain their goals.

Director Murray was appointed by President Donald Trump earlier this year. He was sworn in May 1st, 2019.

John Sullivan, father of Student Officer Russ Sullivan, was also in attendance. John Sullivan was a coworker of Director Murray.

Director Murray also shared some of the great experiences that he had while working towards his degree at the University.

Before his retirement, Mr. Sullivan held the position of Deputy Assistant Director. Director Murray created some smiles and laughter when he said the following: “This man knows more about me than my parents, and even my priest!” Mr. Sullivan polygraphed the Director before he began his career with the Secret Service.

As a department, we thank Director Murray for taking time to come visit his alma mater. It was a true privilege and honor to have him!

COCCIARDI AND ASSOCIATES Business Partner of the Year 2019 Cocciardi and Associates, a full-service Environmental Health & Safety provider specializes in occupational and public health, emergency and risk management and environmental health.

Cocciardi and Associates is tasked with responsibilities ranging from; ensuring all the University’s health and safety programs are in compliance with regulatory requirements, fire safety, emergency preparedness, air and water quality, asbestos abatement, to the storage of hazardous biological and chemical waste. Additionally, they investigate accidents or injuries that occur on campus to help determine cause and contributing factors.

Cocciardi has been providing EH&S services to The University of Scranton for over 25 years. In an effort to increase efficiency, the University made the strategic decision in September 2012 to outsource all EH&S services to Cocciardi and Associates.

The annual Business Partner Appreciation Dinner recognizes the top 100 companies that make outstanding contributions to Scranton’s ability to deliver a superior educational experience to its students.

Cocciardi and Associates consistently delivers and provides a professional product. That is why they earned this year’s award as the top 2019 Business Partner of the Year.
