The report called for a cross-departmental approach and for the inclusion of ‘Activity’ in the title. Dr Randall welcomed the Government’s new Plan, but cautions against the use of language that reduces movement to a series of competitive sporting experiences. Looking ahead, she advocates for greater clarity about Physical Education and hopes initial teacher education and

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
MA/PgDip/PgCert
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Philosophy of Education at Winchester explores both educational issues and the study of education from a philosophical perspective, whilst giving you the opportunity to develop advanced analytical and research skills. COURSE OVERVIEW The philosophy of education is about asking the most important questions that inform educational debate today: What is education? What are its aims? What kind of education do we need? For whom? Can education make us into better individuals, or cure societal problems? This course examines the ways in which a variety of philosophical ideas and resources can be drawn upon to evaluate contemporary and historical educational concerns more profoundly. Along with an introduction to the field of contemporary philosophies of education, we consider questions of the social, ethical and aesthetic dimensions of education, drawing on canonical and present-day texts, as well as case studies, film, literature, and personal experience, to enhance our appreciation of policy and practice. You are provided with one-to-one support in the production of a dissertation, which is a substantial piece of independent research of between 12,000-15,000 words. MPHIL/PHD
MPHIL/PHD Studying for an MPhil or PhD at Winchester provides you with the opportunity to make a major and original contribution to knowledge. This rewarding experience involves direct engagement at the cutting edge of a chosen field of study and the chance to explore ideas and problems in depth and in innovative ways. Please visit winchester.ac.uk/research for the most up-to-date information. OVERVIEW Through a substantial programme of research, you critically investigate and evaluate a specific topic and demonstrate an understanding of research methodology appropriate to the field of study. Your topic may be a personal interest, an area of study related to an earlier qualification or an issue an employer would like you to investigate. If you wish to study for a PhD, you will first need to register for an MPhil. If your research is good enough, you may be able to upgrade through viva voce examination to a PhD programme. You can also take an MPhil as a qualification in its own right if your research project does not have enough scope for a full PhD. An MPhil requires a shorter thesis than a PhD, but you will still need to complete a viva to qualify. You will work on your topic of interest with the support of at least two supervisors who will provide subject and methodological expertise. The team is led by a Director of Studies together with a second supervisor and may also include specialist advisors. This leads to the production of a thesis or creative work, depending on your subject, which is examined by viva. Alongside progressing with your research, you undertake research skills development through a Postgraduate Certificate, enhanced by the Research Training Opportunities (RTO) Programme. The RTO enables you to join other students for relevant seminars, study groups and symposia. You also have a dedicated Postgraduate Research study space. In addition, we provide a training programme if you wish to pursue a teaching career in higher education and there may be opportunities for you to undertake paid part-time lecturing and tutorial work, if appropriate. If your research proposal needs further work before you embark on the MPhil/PhD, Preparation for Research is available. For a oneoff fee, you receive up to six supervisory meetings, with IT and Library access in order to develop a revised research proposal. If it is satisfactory, you will be invited for interview.
OUR VALUES – COMPASSION, INDIVIDUALS MATTER AND SPIRITUALITY – UNDERPIN EVERYTHING WE DO. WE HOLD THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION HR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF OUR OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH AND SUPPORTING THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OUR RESEARCHERS.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Normally a first or upper second-class Honours degree or a Masters degree (or equivalent), relevant to your chosen discipline. This should be supported by two academic references. If you don’t have a degree in a related discipline, you must demonstrate relevant experience and engagement with the subject area. APPLICATION PROCESS: You need to submit a research proposal on Form A (which can be found on our website). Before you do this, you are strongly advised to discuss your ideas with a potential supervisor whose research interests complement your own. visit winchester.ac.uk/study/research-degrees/ research-supervision IF ENGLISH IS NOT YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE: IELTS 6.5 (including 7.0 in academic writing) or equivalent DEGREE DURATION: Up to 4 years full-time; up to 7 years part-time TUITION FEES (subject to approval by the University’s Board of Governors)*: Full-time UK/EU/Channel Islands and Isle of Man students: £13,200 maximum total cost for the first 3 years; thereafter, there is an ‘until completion’ fee of £100 per month Full-time International students: £40,500 maximum total cost for the first 3 years; thereafter, there is an ‘until completion’ fee of £100 per month Preparation for Research: £500 total For a breakdown of part-time, pre-thesis, thesis and additional costs, please visit winchester.ac.uk/research-degrees START DATE: September and April STUDY/SUPERVISION TAKES PLACE: At mutually agreed times RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE CENTRE E: PGRAdmin@winchester.ac.uk T: +44 (0) 1962 827483 W: winchester.ac.uk/research-degrees
