Thank you for attending the 2015 Digital Masters Awards Tonight was both a celebration of talent, and a reminder of how far we, as an industry, have come. The array of brilliant executives leading European companies to global success is testament to the strength of Europe’s digital ecosystem. The winners embody the qualities that have underpinned this success: bold leadership, innovative thinking and the courage to take risks. We feel privileged to have been able to honour them tonight. Now in their second year, we are delighted that the Digital Masters Awards are already widely recognised across Europe as the benchmark for excellence in the digital disciplines. This is, in large part, due to the calibre and hard work of our distinguished judging panel, chaired once again, with great skill, by Robin Klein. We thank them for their dedication and wisdom. We are also very grateful to our sponsors for supporting the Digital Masters Awards, many of whom have been involved since the beginning: MMC Ventures, Google, Silicon Valley Bank, Criteo, Mazars, eBay Enterprise, Colt, King & Wood Mallesons, Hired, Mosaic Ventures and Eventbrite. Thanks too to our community partners Tech City and Tech London Advocates, as well as the Guardian Media & Tech Network for spreading the word. Finally, we would like to thank all of you for joining us in honouring these outstanding people. The green cubes are in good hands this year. Roll on 2016! Message from the Chairman of the Judging Panel Anyone who doubts Europe’s capacity to produce outstanding digital executives need only glance at this year’s nominees. These talented individuals exemplify bold, inspirational and effective leadership, and it has been a pleasure to review their recent careers as Chairman of the 2015 Judging Panel. It’s been much harder, of course, to determine the winners! I am most grateful to my fellow judges for their dedication to this difficult task, and I hope you’ll agree that the 2015 winners are amongst the very best at what they do, and inspiring examples to the next generation of digital executives. I am delighted to see how the Digital Masters Awards, in only its second year, has already captured people’s imagination across Europe. To see these largely unsung heroes given public recognition before such an impressive audience is truly special, and I’m pleased to have been able to play a part in it. Robin Klein

SoundCloud has almost doubled in size, and now has more than 300 staff from 36 countries located in four offices across the globe. Caoimhe has grown the People function at SoundCloud to 25, and in the last six months has reorganised the team around a strategic business partner model. Last year SoundCloud launched a partner programme, which allowed creators to make money from the platform for the first time. It now has more than 100 premier partners signed up, including emerging artists, music labels and audio creators. Caoimhe’s team sourced the sales, marketing and content teams to implement the programme, and opened SoundCloud’s first office in New York.
RUNNER UP Ann-Marie Cooper, Chief People Officer, Huddle
RUNNER UP Ciara Smyth, Chief People Officer, King
Working closely with Huddle’s CEO and President, Ann-Marie Cooper helped take the business from a small startup to one that employs 176 people across four different offices in the US and UK. This includes hiring more than 60 new people in 2014 on the back of a Series D funding round of $51 million.
Since joining King in 2013, the headcount at the company has doubled each year. Ciara Smyth’s team has managed a rigorous process to support the growth needs, while focusing on quality and the right cultural fit. Thanks in part to Ciara’s efforts, King was named Sweden’s best employer in both 2013 and 2014.
To enable the business to scale, she introduced a People Plan to focus on making Huddle an even better place to work; focused on leadership and management, building career progression and succession plans and offering training across all levels. Ann-Marie also helped to launch “Huddle Together”, Huddle’s first ever global company offsite.
At the same time she helped prepare and shepherd the company through its successful public offering. Post-IPO, Ciara made sure the company had the infrastructure to both attract new hires and retain staff.
This focus on development has continued in 2015 with Huddle’s first in-house leadership development programme launched in Q1 this year.
Ciara has helped align HR strategy to the business, while making sure that employee satisfaction is always prioritised as the business continues to grow.

Stephen Morana, CFO, Zoopla Property Group Stephen Morana’s most notable achievement in the past 12 months was leading Zoopla Property Group to a successful IPO in June 2014, which valued the company at close to a billion dollars. A complex pre-IPO shareholder base and a difficult market made Stephen’s work offering all the more impressive. Most recently, Zoopla Property Group initiated the acquisition of uSwitch, the price comparison website, which is expected to complete in June 2015. Prior to the IPO, Stephen oversaw the relatively seamless integration of VizziHome (June 2013) and SmartNewHomes (September 2013), helping make Zoopla Property Group the market leader in its space and putting it in a very strong position pre-listing.

In the background Stephen and his team have created a first-class finance function to support life as a public company. This involved building out a stronger, more resilient and broader finance organisation that includes legal, investor relations, strategy and business intelligence.
RUNNER UP Peter Sterky, CFO, Spotify Spotify is currently the undisputed music streaming market leader and the second-largest revenue source for the music industry. Achieving this involved investing in scaling the business to 1,500+ employees servicing 60 million users in 58 markets across the world. Peter Sterky has played a pivotal part in this, leading numerous financing rounds – attracting capital from high-profile European, US and international investors, including top mutual funds – at increasing valuations. According to recent media speculation, Spotify is now valued at more than $8 billion. In the past 12 months Peter has built an even more robust and powerful investment team, which is enabling Spotify to align its astonishing user growth with its balance sheet.
RUNNER UP Belinda Wrigley, CFO, WorldRemit Just one week after Belinda Wrigley joined the WorldRemit team, investment activity commenced that would result in one of the largest Series A fund raises in Europe during 2014. Belinda was the finance lead in a small team that successfully secured $40 million from Accel Partners in February 2014. A year later WorldRemit took on an additional $100 million in Series B funding from TCV. Both of these investment successes were delivered alongside improving the day-to-day management of the operational finance requirements of the business. Belinda built out a finance team of 20 people, implemented a new finance system and increased reporting transparency and control. She also delivered significant margin improvements across the business through supplier management and negotiation.

Henrik Landgren, Global VP Analytics, Spotify On joining Spotify, Henrik Landgren built up an analytics team from scratch, which now consists of 45 people, and is seen as a vital part of the music streaming service. Spotify now possesses a centralised team of experts with embedded analysts that work across all the departments. Every decision at Spotify is informed by data and insights and Henrik has helped introduce an experimental mindset into the company’s DNA. Today, Spotify tests new ideas and analyses measurable outcomes before investing in large projects, which has helped make the company both more cost efficient and more focused on what its users want. The free mobile product that Spotify released in December 2013 was born out of this approach.

Henrik has also ensured that all data is centralised and available to all departments, combining large operational, survey-based and financial datasets.
RUNNER UP Vince Darley, Chief Scientist, King With more than 17 years experience in data science, Vince Darley oversees a team working on all aspects of analytics and business intelligence at King, including downstream and upstream data pipelines, data warehousing, real-time and batch reporting, segmentation and real-time analytics – information which is used across the business to improve the player experience. This presents significant challenges: very varied data and identifiers need to be carefully merged together to create a clear picture of the individual player; the volume is immense (10-20 billion events per day); and the data is noisy. Vince’s work has been an important part of King’s phenomenal success.
RUNNER UP Adam Wright, Business Intelligence Director, JUST EAT JUST EAT is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the FTSE 250, doubling in size every 18 months. The analytics function that Adam Wright has built from the ground up over the past eight months has helped underpin this. JUST EAT now has analysts in six major countries and a central data team, which partners with marketing and tech teams, meaning every decision, however big or small, can be informed by data. Thanks to Adam, JUST EAT makes better data-led decisions. The marketing analytics he’s introduced highlight which campaigns are the most effective, allowing a better return on marketing investment, whilst the web analytics and research programme has helped make its sales process more effective. The speed at which Adam introduced the analytics function to the company is impressive, and Google is currently writing a case study on JUST EAT focusing on how an analytics function can be built at speed.

RUNNER UP Bjorn Lindberg, CCO, iZettle iZettle has launched a game-changing mobile payment product and service in 10 markets including Mexico and Brazil. Bjorn Lindberg was responsible for sparking this expansion, as well as contributing to the company’s impressive €2 billion yearly run rate. During this process, last year iZettle also implemented a new sales organisation structure, which hugely improved efficiency and reduced customer acquisition cost in all markets. As Chief Commercial Officer, Bjorn was responsible for setting up the local sales offices and introducing the new sales organisation across the territories.
RUNNER UP Mikael Wintzell, Deputy CCO, Klarna In a fiercely competitive market Klarna has managed to grow by an average of 40% per year in the past two years while still remaining profitable. It has become the market leader in the Nordics and has recently launched in the UK. In the past 18 months Klarna has roughly doubled the size of its sales organisation and, following an acquisition, successfully integrated the merging of two companies with different sales cultures. Under Mikael Wintzell, Klarna has become a valuebased sales organisation and in the process has separated the direct link between cost and price. Under Nicolas Brusson’s stewardship BlaBlaCar raised $100 million in July last year. It was France’s largest venture capital funding round in the past decade and one of the top 10 largest tech-funding rounds in Europe in 2014. BlaBlaCar raised the money to fuel expansion, and on the back of this Nicolas oversaw launches in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and India and led several acquisitions. He is now turning his attention to Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Adrian Blair is directly responsible for JUST EAT’s P&L across 15 countries, leading a team of over 1,000 people. Signing up new restaurants is a key driver of the company’s growth, and in 2014 Adrian’s sales teams signed up 9,300 new restaurants globally. In Q1 last year he led an initiative to fundamentally redesign the company’s sales model. Having transformed the productivity of the sales team in one city where the new model was trialled, he is now rolling out the lessons from the initiative globally.
Alongside international expansion, BlaBlaCar more than doubled the size of its community. Its headcount has also doubled to more than 300 employees, and the company has opened nine offices globally. More than two million people now travel with BlaBlaCar each month – more than twice the volume of traffic on the Eurostar.
Company culture is incredibly important to JUST EAT and last year Adrian worked very closely with the HR team to define specific behaviours associated with the company’s values. He has personally trained every manager in the UK business in staff coaching and development, and introduced the concept of “undercover takeaway” to his management team, where periodically they go out and work in a JUST EAT restaurant for an evening. This helps ensure that strategic and personnel decisions are grounded in an understanding of the reality for restaurant owners.

RUNNER UP Simon Lambert, CTO, Wahanda
In the past 18 months Tictail has more than doubled its user base to over 75,000 online stores entirely through organic growth, transformed from a desktop-based to mobile-first entity, and managed to turn the US into its fastest-growing market less than 12 months after launching there. As Co-founder and CTO Siavash Ghorbani has been a pivotal part of this success.
Launching four mobile apps in the past 12 months is paying off for Wahanda with 40% of its business moving from desktop to mobile in just nine months. Alongside this mobile transformation it has grown from a small London-centric startup, to a panEuropean leader that has launched in eight markets in less than six months, while posting 240% growth year-on-year.
Key to these achievements was growing the Tictail tech team from two to 22 in three years. Siavash recruited talented engineers with diverse skills, and has built a collegiate and agile product development process that has enabled the team to deploy updates and improvements to users on an hourly basis.
Simon Lambert led the company’s mobile project, which included the acquisition and integration of Lithuanian-based mobile app developer, Lemon Labs. He also led the initiative to internationalise the Wahanda platform, including the integration of the systems of Salonmeister, a German equivalent of Wahanda, which it acquired in October 2014. Cait oversaw the rebuilding of Shazam’s iOS and Android apps from the ground up, and focused on moving Shazam from a pure utility to content discovery tool. The redesign involved introducing a content-led news feed, putting more music content on the app, revamping major sections, better integrating streaming partners and delivering more successful native advertising units, which drove up ad revenues. RUNNER UP Nikki Lambert, Marketing Director Europe, Spotify Spotify’s brand awareness is now at an all-time high and this is in no small part due to Nikki Lambert and her team. The online music streaming market leader enjoyed a landmark year in 2014, hitting 60 million users and securing and activating multiple major partnerships with the likes of the BBC, Vodafone, Uber, Shazam and Sony PlayStation. A significant proportion of the subscriber growth was in Europe where Nikki heads up Spotify’s consumer marketing efforts, educating the audience and giving them reasons to try the service. She’s particularly active in attracting a student audience to Spotify. And although the partnership deals are the result of cross-department co-operation, bringing these partnerships to market, driving their awareness and making them relevant and meaningful to a consumer audience is very much the responsibility of Nikki’s team.
RUNNER UP Charlotte Harper, (formerly) Group Marketing Director, Zoopla Property Group Zoopla is now the UK’s best-known property portal. At the heart of Zoopla Property Group’s communications is an integrated marketing strategy revolving around a ‘smart knows’ idea. Charlotte introduced the concept of ‘smarter property search’, which has burrowed its way into the very fibre of the brand and is now a part of the company’s DNA. Charlotte was also responsible for rationalising and strengthening the Zoopla Property Group brand portfolio post-merger with the Daily Mail Property Group in 2013, redefining the portfolio into two clear brands – Zoopla and Primelocation. RUNNER UP Tanya Cordrey, Chief Digital Officer, Guardian News & Media Last year, the Guardian achieved record global traffic of 122 million monthly unique visitors to overtake the New York Times as the world’s largest English quality newspaper site. It also achieved record digital revenues in the process. Tanya Cordrey and her team played a key role in these achievements. She oversaw several major new product launches in 2014 including the Guardian website, new Guardian apps, a new content management system and a real-time analytics system. Tanya’s team’s effort significantly amplified the distribution of the Guardian’s award-winning journalism; for example, the improved website led to higher retention rates, the new apps doubled the user base, and social sharing more than doubled, helping the Guardian to become one of the biggest global publishers on Facebook.
