A Letter from our President Welcome to the future! The year 2020 illustrated the importance of STEAM — medicine, research, virtual communication, vaccines, logistics etc. It is exhilarating to begin to see the impact the incredible new Technology Suite — the Innovation Hub along with a drop-in room for ongoing project work — is having on Ursuline students. The world is counting on future generations to create, invent, collaborate and communicate. The Ursuline mission is vital and, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of many loyal supporters to the Innovation Campaign, Ursuline students now have an additional 8,500 square feet of learning and social spaces to keep changing the world. I am also incredibly grateful to the many donors who supported the Annual Fund last year which totaled $945,673. Your contributions were needed more than ever. Whether your gift was restricted to our COVID Assistance Fund (which helped absorb some of the enormous and unexpected costs due to the pandemic) or to scholarship (always a priority), or an unrestricted donation which allowed us to use it where it was most needed, you made a difference! With each solicitation we assure our community that every single gift counts, regardless of amount. Never has this been more true.

As I am retiring in June 2021 and this is my final Annual Donor Report letter as President, I am overcome thinking about how responsive you have been to my requests for support. You have enabled The Ursuline School to be a source of inspiration and empowerment for our students. I am reminded of the words of St. Angela Merici, “Cultivate the vine entrusted to you,” and realize that your generous support has enabled us to do just that for Ursuline students over the years. Thank you for helping Ursuline, our beloved school, continue to lead the way in girls’ education. Eileen Davidson H’12 P’90 GP’19

The Ursuline School Mission Statement The mission of The Ursuline School is to educate, inspire and empower. An Ursuline education prepares young women to be women of faith and integrity, lifelong learners and wise, responsible, global leaders committed to the Ursuline tradition of Serviam – I will serve.

A Letter from our Board of Trustees Chair Dear Members of the Ursuline School Community, Rich Tradition, Bold Ambition. The theme of last year’s Annual Fund, chosen well ahead of calendar year 2020, are just about the four strongest words to describe this community’s response to the events of 2020. It was the rich tradition of The Ursuline School which mobilized the faculty, administration, students, and parents to shift to distance learning within hours of being among the first schools closed in March. It was bold ambition that drove further plans for faculty support, PPE investment, graduation and moving-up ceremonies, welcoming the Classes of 2024 and 2027, and continuing with the Innovation Campaign construction. Another aspect of both tradition and ambition was demonstrated by alumnae who stepped forward in conversation with members of the administration and trustees against the backdrop of this nation’s racial injustice headlines. Shared experiences, feedback, offers of help and connections will make The Ursuline School a place that all feel welcomed and encouraged to reach for their dreams and realize their potential. I am incredibly proud to have been part of the beginning of these dialogs last summer and applaud Ursuline’s commitment to cultivate an environment of equity and inclusion for all. It is said that years like 2020 expose the true character of a community. Ursuline’s community demonstrated Serviam in countless ways – prayers, food and supply drives, sewing and delivering masks to frontline workers, support of each other and many unseen acts for others. Those who could responded 4

with heartwarming support of the Serviam Scholarship Endowment Fund, whose growth remains a priority especially in these challenging times. The Innovation Campaign also benefited from the character of this community, receiving donations of major, multi-year pledges and one-time gifts. There will be much written about 2020. My hope is that the selfless and bold responses of The Ursuline School community becomes immortalized in our DNA. As I complete my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I will forever be grateful for the support of so many fellow trustees who responded to the call to serve. Among these special people, The Ursuline School is forever indebted to Claire McIntee ‘57, Ed Merrigan P’00 ‘02 ‘04, and JoAnn Murphy GP ’07 and ’22, who passed into eternal life while serving as trustees in 2019 and 2020. Each left an indelible and profound impact on the board room, The Ursuline School and me. Ac Fui, gratefully. Finally, I am thrilled that Sheila Sohr P’12 has assumed the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees. Sheila has been involved with Ursuline for many years, as a Co-President of the Mothers’ Auxiliary, author of the 2013 Strategic Plan, Trustee, Committee Chair and Vice Chair. Fortunately, she did not “graduate” with her daughter Caroline so that Ursuline will continue to benefit from her trademark wisdom, steadfast commitment to improvement and the generous commitment of her many talents in the years to come. Forever grateful, Ann Gillin Lefever ‘82 Chair, Board of Trustees THE URSULINE SCHOOL Annual Donor Report 2020

A Letter from Our Director of Philanthropy Dear Generous Benefactors, It is during the most trying times that I am supremely grateful to be part of such a caring community of faith. Thank you for your generosity this past year which provided many, many bright spots in a difficult time. From the moment that New Rochelle became “the containment zone” in early March 2020, the Ursuline family pulled together to support one another and the larger community. Messages such as these from Ursuline alumnae reassured and inspired: “Believing that charity begins at “home,” I am wondering if Ursuline has a special COVID-19 fund to help our families who need it most?” “...Let me take care of the amount in arrears and I will also pay for the upcoming semester’s tuition for her. That way, her mom can get back on her feet and save for next year.” Another fine demonstration of Serviam — I will serve — occurred on April 24. Donations of $24 poured in on our annual giving day, CROWDS4TUS AND4OTHERS. Ursuline spirit always shines, but even greater when times are tough. In response to the extreme need in Westchester County, a quarter of all money that we raised on that day was directed to fighting food insecurity in the community. We raised $75,000 to support Ursuline students, provided two local food pantries with $25,000 and coordinated several meal deliveries as CROWDS Challenges were met. Best. Feeling. Ever.

6

On the Innovation Campaign front, all fundraising concerns were quickly put to rest as Ursuline faithful continued to make multiyear pledges and purchased named hexagons. Campaign Gala guests graciously pivoted when An Evening of Innovation went virtual with great success! Cash and pledges to the Innovation Campaign in the 201920 fiscal year totaled $3,285,457 and, as of the time of this publication, we have surpassed the $7.2 million mark. Once again, I am ever grateful for your support. The finish line is in sight! The Ursuline community’s commitment never waned as the months passed. We know that the effects of the pandemic will be felt for years to come, but it is uplifting to know that our community will continue to offer support, however they are able. And so I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and pray for your good health and safety in the new year. With an abundance of gratitude, Catherine Fay McCarthy ‘84 P14 Director of Philanthropy

THE URSULINE SCHOOL Annual Donor Report 2020

The Annual Fund is our top priority fundraiser. It is a vital revenue source that helps keep tuition increases to a minimum and supports some of the programming that makes Ursuline such an exceptional school. Participation by the entire community in the Annual Fund—Board of Trustees, alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, faculty and staff, grandparents—is often a consideration when we apply to charitable foundations for grant support. For example, programs such as Global Education & Serviam, which includes our new Scholar-in-Residence, is partially funded by a grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation. Similarly, TUSMUNC, The Ursuline School Model United Nations Middle

Rich Tradition BOLD AMBITION

School Conference, and the new Louise Este Bruce Scholarship are funded by grants from the Louise Este Bruce Foundation. Foundation support is also responsible for several of the spectacular facility upgrades such as the reimagining of the Gabelli Library and Room 310, two projects made possible thanks to the extraordinary support of The H.W. Wilson Foundation. We are very grateful to the following individuals, families and organizations whose donations make many wonderful things happen at Ursuline!

“ In the six years I was a student at

Ursuline, I didn't realize then what significance my time there would have on the rest of my life. I learned that there were no limits to the success I could achieve; not my age, race, and especially not my gender. I now try to find ways to give back to my community what Ursuline gave to me. It wasn't until after my time at Ursuline was over that I realized all the names on the wall meant so much. I understand how important those contributions were to my education, so I want to do my part as well. I choose to give back so I can do my part to support the next generation of leaders that will come from The Ursuline School.”

Inspirational Philanthropy In recent years we have seen growing numbers of our youngest alumnae consistently supporting the Annual Fund. This is exciting as it serves as an indicator of Ursuline’s financial future. Alumnae support for a school is critical, and Ursuline alumnae are the very best! Parent Groups

We are so thankful for our parent volunteers! The Ursuline School Mothers' Auxiliary and Fathers' Club are a dedicated group of parents who offer support and encouragement to our faculty and staff, parent community, and our students. We were fortunate to have enjoyed the parent organizations' events of fall 2019: the Father-Daughter Dance, the Communion Breakfast, and the Mothers' Auxiliary Fashion Show, as well as the Morning of Spiritual Renewal in February. When the pandemic forced virtual learning and the cancellation of planned events, they continued to support families by organizing welcoming Zoom meetings designed to keep parents informed and engaged. We offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to all our parent volunteers! (The images in this section reflect events before March 2020)

Thank You Campaign Donors! In a year when words and terms such as pandemic, Zoom, social distancing and remote learning consumed conversations, at Ursuline, we were fortunate to frequently use others - blessings, appreciation, support, community - among them. From the extraordinary gifts made by our leadership level donors to the collective generosity of hundreds of faithful supporters, the Innovation Campaign powered on in a difficult year adding $3,285,475 in new gifts and pledges and bringing the new total to $7,222,647. We are profoundly grateful and proud to list the names of these special donors whose investments in the Innovation Campaign will inspire creative solutions to the world’s challenges, spur invention and innovation, and offer spaces to encourage discussion, debate, collaboration and friendship.

Thank you to those who purchased hexagons in the iHub!

I “ am very excited for the opportunity to cement my name in the new iHub. I spent 7 years at Ursuline, more time than at any other school. Now, with two school-aged girls myself, who anticipate becoming koalas, I hope they will be proud to not only walk in my footsteps, but to be part of a legacy - one whose mission is the successful education of young women.”

“We support the Innovation Campaign to acknowledge the dedication of The Ursuline School’s mission to Educate, Inspire, and Empower our daughters and all women. The expansion of technology-based space and the addition of flexible social space, will enhance our daughters’ skills by closing the male to female S T E M gap and enhance their social skills, respectively. Moreover, the values that Ursuline instills in its students through Serviam are especially timely during these challenging times. The Hexagon is a fitting symbol representing our strength when we organize and work together as a community. What better way to show support and thanks to Ursuline, and give a nod to the girls for working so hard, than putting a couple of Hexagons under the tree? ”

Building on the Tradition of Innovation

An Evening of InnovatioN, Ursuline’s Campaign Gala lived up to its name . . . and then some! Thank you to the incredible Planning Committee who made adjustments every step of the way as our original format — a traditional gala of 500+ guests at the school scheduled for March 2020 — evolved to a fully virtual, in-home celebration in September.

While the year 2020 brought countless challenges, it also created opportunities to reimagine events that provide vital support for key fundraising initiatives. We proudly celebrated the sensational event Honorees in a tribute video hosted by President Eileen Davidson. Auctioneer Pat Tully brought down the house and entertained our virtual crowd. Special deliveries of full catered dinners from Scarborough Fair were delivered to honorees for family gatherings in their homes, and all other guests received grazing boards from Stephanie’s Kitchen Counter and bottles of Maison Marcel wine to enjoy during the festivities. To the best guest list ever, we offer our deep appreciation. This great group of Ursuline faithful took the many changes in stride and demonstrated their enthusiasm by becoming sponsors, taking journal ads, and participating in the auctions and paddle raise. The event raised nearly $400,000 for the Innovation Campaign to support a The Ursuline School naming opportunity of one of the new spaces for President Eileen Davidson. n Evening o Although it was not the event we imagined one year ago, the Ursuline spirit and our generous donors made the Evening of Innovation wonderful in a new and fun way!

Privately-Funded Scholarships & Awards Named, privately-funded scholarships offer an important source of financial assistance. In the 2019-20 school year, these scholarships provided $335,325 or 20% of the total amount of scholarships, grants and financial assistance given to Ursuline students. Thanks to the generous support of individuals, families, foundations and reunion-year efforts, these merit and need-based scholarships recognize students for character, academics, leadership and service. Named privately-funded scholarships provide partial or full tuition and may be funded annually or endowed. Earnings from an endowed scholarship are distributed while the principal remains intact. The minimum required to establish an endowed scholarship is $25,000. Criteria for privately-funded scholarships and awards are established by the donor in cooperation with the Advancement Office, and recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee. Incoming and rising students are informed of scholarship opportunities and invited to apply. Candidates for one-year scholarship awards are recommended to the Scholarship Committee by faculty, staff and department chairs. Through the Stewardship Program, scholarship recipients connect with benefactors through letterwriting and the annual Benefactor Breakfast. In 2020, the latter was celebrated through a virtual Scholarship Awards Presentation and year-end video project. The Scholarship balance as of 8/31/2020 appears below the name of each scholarship fund, along with any new gifts or pledge payments received during the 2019-20 fiscal year. The scholarships and awards in bold are new this fiscal year.

Scholarships Scholarships are multi-year awards for incoming or rising ninth grade students. Select scholarships become available each year.

Katherine Johnson Memorial Scholarship Award

Elizabeth Worland Ford Memorial Scholarship

The Katherine Johnson Memorial Scholarship Award was inspired by the extraordinary life and career of the pioneering NASA mathematician portrayed in the book and movie Hidden Figures who passed away in 2020 at age 101. Ms. Johnson’s work was integral to the success of the early space missions and, in 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This new award was established by alumna Jurate Kazickas ‘60 to recognize and inspire the next generation of groundbreaking African-American women in STEM fields. It will be presented annually to the graduating AfricanAmerican senior with the highest 4-year cumulative average in Science, Engineering, Math & Computer Science courses.

Elizabeth Worland Ford was a woman of many talents and interests who felt strongly about elevating and supporting other talented women. She credited her experience at a Catholic college for women as having a strong influence on her life and career path, and wanted her daughter, Megan ‘02, to have the empowering opportunities that an Ursuline education offers. Elizabeth enjoyed a successful career as an accountant and was often a mentor for new female colleagues. Her positive outlook, quiet confidence and genuine interest in people made her a resource for friends and family members entering or reentering the workforce. Elizabeth also had an affinity for the creative arts and, with her innate ability to understand and encourage others, liked to recognize and promote the works of female artisans. This scholarship, established by Elizabeth’s husband and daughter, will be awarded to an incoming or rising ninth grader who shares qualities of Elizabeth’s character, collaborates with and encourages her peers, and integrates creative interests in her approach to learning.

CROWDS4TUS

AND4OTHERS

On March 3, 2020, a New Rochelle resident became the first confirmed COVID-19 patient in Westchester County. Within days, the city of New Rochelle became the epicenter of the virus — the “Containment Zone”. The National Guard was deployed and the first drive thru testing site in the state opened at Glen Island Park. Like all schools and businesses in the one-mile containment zone, Ursuline closed its campus.

As local workers were laid off, cleaning supplies and food scarce, and children who rely on school lunch programs were home, HOPE Community Services in downtown New Rochelle reported an increase of 364% in the number of meals served from February. 2020 to March 2020 (56,654 meals in March, up from 15,566 just one month earlier). While needs grew exponentially, costs escalated as meals required individual packaging, volunteerism declined, and fundraising events were cancelled.

Thanks to a creative, tech savvy and resilient faculty and student body, the transition to remote learning was done quickly and with ease. The preparedness for that moment was due in large part to Annual Fund support. Our faculty are trained in the latest techniques and technology, we invest in our infrastructure and facilities, and our students receive the support and encouragement needed to adapt. The Annual Fund helps to cover the costs associated with all of these things, so we thank you for participating in fundraisers such as CROWDS4TUS that support the Annual Fund.

58

When crises occur, it is the most vulnerable who are usually the worst affected. Ursuline’s Social Action Club immediately began conducting bi-weekly, outdoor, socially- distant food drives which provided some immediate relief to our struggling neighbors. We also reinvented our annual day of giving to become, CROWDS4TUS AND4OTHERS, allocating a quarter of the proceeds, $25,000, to HOPE Community Services and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. Additionally, we incorporated “Challenges” to benefit the two organizations (see at right).

THE URSULINE SCHOOL Annual Donor Report 2020

Carole Troum, Development Director of HOPE, expressed what the support meant to those working at HOPE, “The Ursuline community caring so much about their neighbors in need gives us the energy we need to get the job done.” THANK YOU to everyone who joined the CROWD last April and made a difference in the lives of Ursuline students and the larger community! Please join us again on FRIDAY, APRIL 23RD AND SATURDAY, APRIL 24TH as we strive to make CROWDS4TUS AND4OTHERS our most successful day of giving yet.

#HeForShe Well before the official #HeForShe movement was underway, The Ursuline School benefitted from the support of men honoring the important Ursuline women in their lives.

Bob Dohrenwend, husband of Patricia Niles Dohrenwend ‘62, not only encouraged his wife’s loyal support of her alma mater, but chose to personally donate to the school as well. “I associate independent thinking and selfconfidence with Ursuline women,” shares Bob, “Patty’s rigorous education provided a firm basis for her career in an era when that was not always anticipated. And her Christian education was invaluable for our family life. Future generations deserve the same.”

It was at the suggestion of Steven Trudel, husband of Barbara Hornig Trudel ‘95, that the Barbara Cunniffe Hornig Memorial Scholarship was established. “Ursuline maintains a very special place in our lives, as it has been home to several generations of Cunniffe and Hornig women. The pride in the school, community and quality of its alumnae have been fixtures of conversations with the family over the 16 years that I have been a part of it. It was natural for me to propose to Barbara a few years ago that we create a scholarship in memory of her late mother. The idea came from the Scholarship Endowment Report sent by the school; and seeing what other families have done. It just felt like the perfect way to honor Barbara, an educator herself, and support a place the family holds so dear.”

Eamon McCooey, father of Megan ’10 and Amanda ’18, is motivated to support Ursuline for the experiences it created for his daughters. “I continue to be amazed by how highly Ursuline graduates speak of their time at the school,” he shares. Eamon feels that during those critical high school years, the foundation set at Ursuline - academically, spiritually and socially — provides young women with the skills and confidence needed for whatever direction their journeys take them. Our world needs strong, smart empathetic leaders and “in an increasingly secular world, Catholic education is needed now more than ever.” The McCooeys continue to support Ursuline as parents of alumnae because they understand that “donations to the Annual Fund and the Campaign allow the school to maintain — and hopefully enhance — Ursuline’s ability to provide opportunities for so many deserving young women.” 60

We are grateful to Bob, Steven and Eamon for their loyal support and look forward to sharing additional #HeForShe stories in future publications.

Annual Fund Contributions by Class Amidst the chaos of 2020, alumnae support slipped. The global pandemic affected all aspects of daily life and certainly impaired our fundraising efforts last year. Our Annual Fund participation rate among alumnae dropped from 14% to 9%. Events such as Reunion and the Christine MacMenamin Memorial Scholarship Reception historically drive Annual Fund participation among alumnae. With the absence of these in-person events in 2020, we saw a dramatic fall off in Annual Fund donations among alumnae from the prior year. CLASS

Every gift, of any amount, makes a difference, not only to address the extraordinary expenses incurred to keep students on campus safe, but especially as we share participation rates with Foundations when submitting grant proposals. Efforts are underway to organize special virtual events so our alumnae can stay connected to one another and to the school in these challenging times!

Planned Giving at The Ursuline School “I belong to Ursuline’s Legacy Society because at Ursuline, girls become women of faith, vision, and intelligence. The curriculum is deep-rooted in Catholic ideals of volunteerism and leadership. We form friendships that last a lifetime, and our love of learning will never cease.” —Mary Jane Kann Reddington ‘41 P‘72

“The Ursulines were role models for me. I felt fortunate to have experienced a community of strong, intelligent female leaders who cultivated and empowered the young women in their care. I also had the great blessing of watching my daughter attend The Ursuline School. Like the Ursulines themselves, the school has kept pace with the times while maintaining special traditions, particularly that of Serviam. Joining the Legacy Society helps ensure the future of education in the spirit of St. Angela.” —Lisa DelPriore Hannan ‘81 P‘15 We encourage you to join The Legacy Society by including The Ursuline School in your planned giving.
