IL-ĦAJJA FUQ GŻIRA Dal-Baħar Madwarha hija l-esibizzjoni tal-arti kontemporanja ewlenija ta’ Valletta 2018 li tesplora l-identità tal-abitanti tal-gżejjer, il-Gżejjer Maltin u l-Baħar Mediterran. Il-viżitaturi huma mistiedna jwettqu vjaġġ fir-realtajiet soċjali u politiċi kontemporanji tal-Mediterran u l-Gżejjer Maltin, bl-ispirtu tal-ħajja fuq gżira bħala gwida. L-idea tal-“gżira” hija antika, iżda waħda li dejjem tiġi aġġornata permezz tal-ħin, post, storja u kultura. U għalhekk, hija wkoll mingħajr żmien, dejjem ġdida. Din hija esibizzjoni mingħajr post fiss ħlief għall-idea tal-“gżira” stess; vjaġġ kulturali madwar dak li hu fluwidu u mibni, storja ffurmata minn ħafna stejjer. 22 artisti rinomati u emerġenti – kemm internazzjonali kif ukoll Maltin – jippreżentawna b’xogħlijiet kontemporanji li jitkellmu dwar l-identità Mediterranja. Il-Belt Valletta u ż-żoni tal-madwar tagħha jospitaw dawn ix-xogħlijiet artistiċi, li kull wieħed minnhom jisfida u jilgħab bir-realtajiet soċjali, politiċi u kulturali tal-Gżejjer. Il-Gżejjer Maltin u l-mitoloġija tagħhom, il-Baħar Mediterran u l-identità talabitanti tal-gżejjer kollha jsiru s-suġġetti tax-xogħol artistiku. Il-blata stess, minnaħa tagħha, issir oġġett ta’ kunflitt, tikxef narrattivi ta’ taqbid, punti ta’ mistrieħ u ta’ inkwiet. Id f’id mal-komunitajiet tal-gżejjer, ix-xogħlijiet multidixxiplinarji tal-esibizzjoni jitfgħu dawl fuq il-kuntest storiku tal-art u l-baħar, fuq l-istorja ta’ dan l-arċipelagu uniku u narrattiva usa’ tal-ħajja fuq gżira. Minn immaġni u tessuti li għandhom x’jaqsmu mal-preżenza kontra l-inviżibbiltà, għal installazzjonijiet li jikxfu l-konsegwenzi tad-dinja reali ta’ oġġetti li ma jiġux indirizzati u xogħlijiet ta’ konverżazzjoni li jiżvelaw konnessjonijiet kemm fil-fond kif ukoll arbitrarji bejn oġġetti u kunċetti kulturali – din hija storja li qiegħda dejjem tinkiteb u terġa’ tinkiteb mill-ġdid, mittiekla sew mill-melħ u l-baħar.

Introduzzjoni
// OF ISLANDS AND “ISLANDNESS” The Island is What the Sea Surrounds is Valletta 2018’s major contemporary art exhibition that explores the identity of islanders, the Maltese Islands, and the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors are invited to embark on this journey through the contemporary social and political realities of the Mediterranean and the Maltese Islands, with the spirit of “islandness” as a guide. The idea of ‘the island’ is an old thing, but one that’s constantly sloughed by the turning tides – of time, place, history, and culture. And so, it is also timeless, always new. This is an exhibition with no place to call home except the idea of the “island” itself; a cultural journey through the fluid and the built, a story formed of many stories. 22 renowned and emerging artists – both international and Maltese – present us with contemporary works that speak of Mediterranean identity. Valletta and its surrounding areas host these artworks, each of which challenges and plays with the social, political, and cultural realities of the Islands. The Maltese Islands and their mythos, the Mediterranean Sea and the identity of islanders all become the subjects of the work of art. The rock itself, in turn, becomes an object of conflict, revealing narratives of struggle, loci of rest and unrest. Hand in hand with the islands’ communities, the exhibition’s multi-textured works shed light on the historical context of the land and the sea, on the story of this unique archipelago and wider narratives of “islandness”. From images and textures that deal with presence versus invisibility, to installations that reveal the real-world consequences of things left unaddressed, and conversational pieces that unveil both deep-seated and whimsical connections between objects and cultural constructs – this is a story that’s always being written and rewritten, well-worn by salt and sea.

XOGĦLIJIET ARTISTIĊI // ARTWORKS: Uprooted; Ġiraffa; Arċipelagu; What Will Fall Ippreżentati f’uħud mill-aktar spazji ikoniċi tal-Belt Valletta u żoni madwar il-kapitali, dawn l-installazzjonijiet sorprendenti jesprimu wħud mill-aktar kwistjonijiet urbani u soċjali urġenti li qed jaffaċċjaw il-Gżejjer Maltin illum. Il-konġestjoni tat-traffiku u l-inflazzjoni fil-prezzijiet tal-proprjetà huma tradotti fi djar improvizzati; krejn tal-kostruzzjoni ssirlu trasformazzjoni; xbieki tas-sajd irkuprati jġibu t-tniġġis marittimu fuq l-art; u artisti mill-Mediterran jaqsmu l-esperjenzi tagħhom. Dawn l-interventi jistiednu lil nies minn kull qasam tal-ħajja biex ikunu involuti mill-qrib mal-belt, u biex jirrikonoxxu l-isfidi ta’ għajxien fi spazju limitat imdawwar mill-baħar bla limitu. Staged in some of Valletta’s most iconic spaces and areas surrounding the capital, these surprising installations express some of the most pressing urban and social issues facing the Maltese Islands today. Traffic congestion and inflated real estate prices are translated into makeshift homes; a construction crane gets a makeover; recovered fishing nets bring marine pollution to land; and creatives from the Mediterranean share their experiences. These interventions invite people from all walks of life to engage with the fabric of the city, and to recognize the challenges of living in a limited space surrounded by the unlimited sea.

Ir-relazzjoni kontroversjali ta’ Malta mal-konġestjoni tattraffiku, l-iżvilupp tal-proprjetà u l-ġentrifikazzjoni huma inkorporati f’karozzi nomadiċi li jokkupaw spazji pubbliċi fil-Belt Valletta, li joffru “akkomodazzjoni għal ġurnata” li tista’ tkun riżervata minn qabel. Malta’s controversial relationship with traffic congestion, real estate development, and gentrification are embodied in nomadic cars that occupy public spaces in Valletta, offering ‘one-day-accomodation’ that can be booked in advance.

Hawnhekk, il-krejn ġgantesk fuq il-Port il-Kbir huwa ttrasformat f’ġiraffa tirgħa, filwaqt li jenfasizza tħassib f’waqtu dwar fruntieri u migrazzjoni. This intervention places an ‘alien’ subject in a familiar space. Here, the towering crane over the Grand Harbour is transformed into a grazing giraffe, highlighting timely concerns about borders and migration.

XOGĦLIJIET ARTISTIĊI // ARTWORKS: Who by Fire; Lampara; Why Do You Ask?; Aljotta; What We Have Overlooked; The Column; Al Araba Al Madfuna III; The Bridge; Where Land Meets Sea L-arti viżiva u dik akustika jistgħu jqanqlu l-memorja u l-assoċjazzjoni. Se jirnexxilhom dawn l-elementi jiffjorixxu f’viżjonijiet nostalġiċi, skoperta mill-ġdid ta’ oġġetti midfuna żmien ilu jew il-ħolqien ta’ forom ġodda? Eki tal-istorja jiġru fl-installazzjonijiet akustiċi u tal-vidjo, filwaqt li jimxu bil-mod għal ġol-preżent. Is-siti taċ-Ċentru tal-Eżamijiet ta’ Sant’Iermu u ċ-Ċisterni ta’ Taħt l-Art, li xi darba kienu jintużaw bħala xelters tal-gwerra, joffru taħlita ta’ ansjetà u nostalġija. Il-programm tal-arti tal-vidjo jittratta temi diversi bħar-romantiċiżmu, provvista u domanda moderni, vjaġġ u spostament, konfini marittimi, nazzjonalità, qawwa anċestrali u kontroll tal-fruntieri. U fil-fond ġewwa ċ-ċisterni, installazzjoni akustika emozzjonali tistieden lil dak li jkun biex jieqaf u jisma’ t-traċċi tal-ħin. Sight and sound art can jog memory and association. Will these elements flower into nostalgic visions, a re-discovery of things long-buried, or the creation of new shapes? Echoes of history run through the exhibition’s sound and video installations, bleeding into the present. Set inside the St Elmo Examination Centre and the underground cisterns that were once used as war shelters, the sites themselves are charged with a mix of anxiety and nostalgia. The video art programme deals with themes as varied as romanticism, modern supply and demand, voyage and displacement, marine boundaries, nationality, ancestral power, and border control. And deep inside the cisterns, a poignant sound installation invites one to stop and listen to the traces of time.
