YOUR Region. YOUR Magazine. YOUR Valley Reporter.
This month’s magazine is chock-full of all sorts of stories, so pull up a chair and enjoy the read. A heart-warming story from the Make-A-Wish Foundation is on the front cover and on page 8 of this issue. Please take the time to read how the gift of a pony has brightened up a sick little girl’s life. The Roleystone Markets were once again a big success. There was an array of stall holders, a good turnout at the car boot sale, beautiful weather, and something for everyone. If you are in need of a holiday, then Travelways Gosnells have got a bargain for you. If you would love to go cruising on the Diamond Princess for 12 nights, then turn to page 13 for further details. Check out page 14 to see
who’s our Local Star for this month. Please keep the submissions coming, it’s always good to profile what great people we have within our community. The long wait endured by our local youths for our Roleystone skate park is finally over. The anticipated opening by the City of Armadale is temporarily pencilled in for the 26th of October but this is yet to be officially confirmed. Construction is now complete and after dodging the rain, some youth have already put the new skate park facility to the test. Turn to page 15 and see why a group of people got dressed in their flannies and mullets to support a recently held fundraising event in Cannington. A staggering $6,000 was raised from the night, with all the much-
Fiona Newland EDITOR/PUBLISHER needed funds going to Levi’s Gift charity. The Pickering Brook Heritage Group has once again compiled a ‘Toilers of the Soil’ 2014 Calendar which will go on sale at the Karragullen Expo on Saturday the 12th of October. It’s a great Christmas gift idea and something for everyone to enjoy. As we get closer to Christmas, please show your support for local community groups who are busy getting their creative wares ready for the annual Christmas Fairs. These are great for last-minute Christmas gift ideas for family, friends, or that special someone.
MEET THE FOUR CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR JARRAH WARD On Tuesday 24 September, you are invited to meet the 4 candidates who have nominated to fill one vacant seat as a Councillor to represent the Jarrah Ward with the City of Armadale. A public meeting will be held from 7.30pm at Roleystone Senior Centre, Jarrah Road, Roleystone. This is a great opportunity to meet the candidates, find out what their election platform is based on and to pose questions. While Local Government voting is not compulsory, every ratepayer should take the opportunity to have input as to who is elected to represent them in making decisions that have short and long term impacts on us all. Enquiries Pat Hart 0407 477 254.

SHIRE MERGES Perhaps the WA Government Master Plan 2012-2018 (www.finance.wa.gov.au) is underwriting its procedure to merge Local Governments. The plan is to: 1) “Decentralise Government office accommodation from the CBD and the CBD fringe; 2) Locate Government office accommodation in metropolitan activity centres; 3) Co-locate Government agencies in regional towns.” The WA Government currently leases about 275,000sqm of Perth CBD office space, which has an A grade annual rent rate of about $850/sqm + outgoings. Without those outs, I estimate the WA Government is paying the lessors of that CBD space (say $725/sqm) about $200 million per year plus about $8,500 per year for each secure CBD car bay. The “work point” office space listed in the Master Plan 2012-2018 is 15sqm. So, with 275,000sqm, that equates to about 18,000 WA Government employees currently in the CBD. Local Governments occupy and enjoy Crown land courtesy of vesting orders. They don’t own it, except any Alienated Crown land they’ve bought, but not reverted to Crown Land. After all Local Government merges are done, supposedly some 15 Local Governments will be dissolved - but not the 15 administration buildings they once occupied. If those buildings average say 4,000sqm each, that means about 60,000sqm of office space will be available into which the WA Government could relocate about 4,000 of its CBD employees and stop annually paying lessors about $44 million in net rent plus more in car bay fees. But, as to decentralising the remaining 14,000 CBD WA Government employees into “metropolitan activity centres”, I can’t help but question where are the 210,000sqm of office space (equalling three QV1s plus Allendale Square) for them? And, the WA Government has apparently promised the employees of any dissolved Local Governments to keep them employed until July 2017 - which is until just six months before the Master Plan 2012-2018 ends. Roleystone WA 6111 Mobile: 0418 912 023 The Football and Cricket Club, Rotary and local trades people donated their time to help, while the youth and their parents were always willing to lend a hand and offer suggestions. There have been many attempts to sideline the skate park through competing interests, including efforts to reduce the allocated skate park budget to support a toilet block at Borello Park. These tactics have delayed the skate park over and TS • SHEDS • GARAGES • CARPOR over again and resulted in increased costs. ING • RAINWATER GOODS NC FE • S OP SH RK WO • However, those who have fought long and hard for the skate park rose to the occasion and voiced their opposition, and at last we have a skate park for our youth. To ignore and take credit from those who have worked and fought long and hard for the skate park is disrespectful of our community spirit to say the least, and a poor indictment on those who call themselves our representatives. I would like to express my appreciation to the mums of Roleystone for getting behind the ‘Give Jeans a Chance’ initiative for Uniting Care West’s Tranby Use our Online Booking Form to book your car in for a service today, go to Day Centre. Thank you to agrademechanicalservices.com.au the Roleystone community for supporting Perth’s homeless. Special thanks to the jean donations from locals and to Roleystone Real Estate for acting as a drop off point. Through a collective effort, over 390 pairs of jeans will be distributed to people experiencing homelessness in Perth. Your acts of kindness will definitely go a long
way with the individuals at Tranby Day Centre. A lot of people who seek support only have the clothes on their backs and have no opportunity to change or do their laundry. Tranby Day Centre provides breakfast, take away meals, showers and clothing for five days of the week. The Centre assists nearly 160 people each morning and has seen a dramatic increase in the number of families seeking support. We are in constant need of clothing, such as socks and underwear, as well as travel sized toiletries. To make a donation to the Winter Appeal, please contact Uniting Care West on 1300 663 298. Thanks again and best wishes Sue Ash, CEO.

As CORE Cider-maker Ragan Wood says, “It is our ambition to stretch the boundaries of cider making, and to challenge typical cider profiles.” Our latest CORE offering is “CORE-rupted”, a rare and limited release that is an excellent example of cider-making as an art form. Six-year old Fae Spearman from Byford has always dreamed of having her very own pony, and thanks to Make-A-Wish® Australia, that dream became a reality on Sunday the 8th of September, when Fae was presented with her special wish; a pony called Gypsy. Fae was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in March 2012, and has since endured countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, immune therapy and lengthy hospital stays. For Fae, the thought of one day having her own pony gave her a reason to stay positive. “Fae absolutely loves horses. We took her for a ride on a pony in April 2012, not long after she was diagnosed, and she has not stopped talking about it since. She couldn’t wait to have her own pony to look after and ride whenever she wants,” said Fae’s mother Toni. Fae arrived at Roleystone Orchard at 11:30am on Sunday in a stretch limousine, to the welcoming cheers of over 100 guests. Gypsy, the lucky pony now owned by Fae, was presented to her with a huge pink bow, painted pink hooves, a pink and purple halter and lead rope, a pink grooming kit, and all the horsey accessories a girl could want, thanks to the generosity of Nagmart Saddlery in Kenwick. After properly meeting Gypsy, Fae had the chance to groom and ride her new pony for the first time, a sight that brought many a tear to the family, friends, Make-A-Wish volunteers, Nagmart Saddlery and Roleystone IGA staff who attended. Fae’s parents, Toni and Glen Spearman, were interviewed on the day, giving insights into their daughter’s battle with her illness, and her reason behind her wish for a pony. Scott Hine, the Western Australian Partnership Development Manager for Make-A-Wish Australia, gave a talk on the impact that a wish has on a seriously ill child, and what it means to Make-A-Wish to be able to fulfill those dreams. “This is one of the most inspiring and heart-warming wishes I have come across during my time at Make-A-Wish,” said Scott Hine. “It’s the perfect example of a local community coming together to help make a seriously ill child’s wish come true, with everyone chipping in to ensure Fae has the best day imaginable.” Thanks to Sally Rainoldi from Roleystone Orchard, Gypsy will be looked after free of charge, and will have other ponies to frolic and roam with, that is of course, when she’s not being showered with love and affection from Fae. Make-A-Wish Australia began in 1985, and since then has granted the cherished wishes of over 7,000 seriously ill children like Fae. International research shows that Make-A-Wish wishes have a significant positive impact on the health and wellbeing of wish children, with 97% of parents surveyed observing a noticeable improvement in their child’s mental and emotional health following the granting of their wish. Physical health was also seen to improve in 75% of cases. To donate to Make-A-Wish Australia, and help grant a wish for a seriously ill child like Fae, please visit www.makeawish. org.au, or call 1800 032 260.

The success of the Roleystone Markets rests in community involvement: we are always looking for new and interesting ways for local community groups and teams to be involved. For instance, we were very pleased to present a cheque of $400 to the Roleystone Lawn Bowls Club in return for their overseeing of the Car Boot Sale at the last markets. No Australian event is ever complete without a sausage sizzle or cake stall, which have been offered at each Markets by the Girl Guides, ‘Ride to Conquer Cancer’ Girls, the Roleystone Community College P&C, Good Shepherd School Netball Club and Dale Little Athletics. Furthermore, the Men’s Shed have been hammering away in their shed in recent months, creating some great ‘old school’ carnival games for everyone to try. There was a ‘Splat the Rat’, a chocolate wheel and a strength tester, which one of our locals proved too strong for! No doubt they are back in the shed as we speak, ‘fiddling’ with the settings. This entertainment was provided free of charge, and we cant thank them enough for their involvement from the beginning. In conjunction with the Roleystone Markets, the Community Garden is a wonderful initiative that complements the event. The garden offers free soil testing, a selection of free fruits and vegetables as well as a beautiful collection of hand painted plant pots for sale, which are painted by our local and very talented Art Group. Shop 4a /2756 Albany Highway The Roleystone Markets focus is on ‘hand-made, handKelmscott WA 6111 crafted and locally produced goods’. Although there are (next door to Domino’s) some stalls that don’t perfectly fit such a description, we make a special effort to see the majority fulfill the goal. We are also looking for other ‘locally produced’ groups to come on board and start a relationship with us at the markets. If you belong to a local group, club or team and would like to be involved in any of the markets, contact Caren Dorman on 0421 363 220 to discuss the possibilities.
On the 13th of October, the group will have a Revegetation Day that will include Dieback treatment at Warwick Savage Reserve, Simons Drive, Roleystone. Signs will indicate the location of the trailer from Simons Drive. Please bring gloves and a small trowel if you have them, although there are some spares. If the weather is inclement, please check our website to
ensure the event is still being held. New volunteers welcome. Participants will also be able to borrow the equipment to treat their own trees against Dieback. Morning tea will be provided. For extra information on the location, go to www.roleybushcare.com.au or look at the Roleybushcare notice board at the Roleystone Shopping Centre.

“Adverse Affectation” can be part of property valuations, of which the two main ones are market and summation. Market refers to the prices struck between willing buyers and willing sellers while summation is the total cost of buying the land, obtaining approvals, site works and the costs to erect all improvement and fit-out. In a scenario where market exceeds summation by 25%, developers will spend $1m to buy land, build and deliver a completed property to the market in the anticipation that it will realise $1.25m. If the margin is less than 20%, most developers will not take the risk. When and where properties are affected by nearby land uses, such as gaols, increases the risk of Adverse Affectation - perhaps up to 25%, which brings me to the recent classification of “Fire Risk Zone” in Roleystone. This could deliver an Adverse Affectation factor against properties, perhaps even down by 20%. For example, to buy and complete site works, driveways, buildings and fit-out in Roleystone at a $1.2m summation will deliver a market price of only $1m due to the Adverse Affectation “Fire-Risk”. This can be seen with properties along the Darling Scarp, which is no longer subliminal courtesy of the recently created “Fire Risk Zone” classification. When we bought a house here in late 2001, we became aware of a subliminal fear of fire in the collective mindset of buyers from Perth coastal suburbs. However, if dwellings in such zones had powerful independent fire fighting equipment plumbed to on-site independent supplies of water to attack approaching fires or embers (whether it be stand alone tanks or swimming pools), the potential “Fire Risk Adverse Affectation” would disappear. For instance, a standard garden hose delivers 20 litres of Water Corporation water per minute. With a 60 PSI pump driven by an independent motor plumbed to an independent reserve of water, there are water jets available that throw 200 litres per minute each in 30 metre diameter circles. If each house has two jets, that’s 400 tonnes every ten minutes for 100 houses. Didn’t helicopters drop a total of 280 tonnes during the February 2011 fires? Paul Clune.

At Stokes & Associates Pty Ltd,
HALF DAY TOUR of ASHENDON FOREST leave for future generations. The issue must be resolved in 2013 before we are locked into another destructive 10 year logging cycle. To prop up an un-economic and destructive industry with taxpayer funds rather than making an effort to move into the modern world of plantations for timber and forests for their myriad of other uses including climate change mitigation and profitable carbon storage, is to sell short a wonderful State asset. It would be better if, in this round of discussion on the future of our forests, we engage in a rational dialogue rather than the destructive adversarial approach taken to the issue during 1995 - 2001 when, only after dangerous conflict, the issue of logging Old Growth Forest was resolved. It is understandable that timber industry workers fear the end of an era. However they, more than anyone else, know that we have pushed our forests to their limit and that their long term employment will be in plantations for timber and in the enormous task of maintaining and protecting the native forests, which they have grown to respect and enjoy. Patrick Weir, Co-ordinator Forest Legacy Project WA.

On the 10th of September we took a diverse group of people into Ashendon Forest within the Canning River catchment on the outskirts of the Perth Metropolitan Area. To say that the group was appalled at what they witnessed of the destruction and proposed destruction of forest is an understatement. The timber industry is in crisis because the “amount of waste v. quantity of quality of timber that can be extracted from the forest” has reached an unsustainable limit. The damage now caused and the waste created in the logging process has to be seen to be believed. “Business as usual” is not a suitable response to the issue of forest management in WA's South West native forests. The proposed log between 1,500 - 2,000sqkm of forest over a 10 year period at a cost to taxpayers of over $9M per year v. the opportunity to gain an income from carbon credits at a rate of up to $400M per year would appear to be a “no brainer”. The government and the Forest Products Commission must look at the information available and enter into discussion with the public about how best to utilise the wonderful forest legacy we can

ROLEYSTONE KARATE STUDENTS COMPETE IN NATIONALS Months of training paid off for Brooke Williams and Gabby Purser from Kofukan Karate Roleystone, who were selected for the state team competing in the Australian Karate Federation Nationals, held in Hobart from 7th -12th August 2013. Travel and accommodation costs were not cheap, so the two competitors organised their own fundraising. A presentation night was held on Tuesday 6th August, attended by Sam Saffioti of Roleystone Real Estate, our club’s major sponsor. Following the draw of the raffles and jelly bean guess, Sensei Darren presented a cheque to Brooke and Gabby on behalf of Kofukan Karate Australia for $1,000. Sam Saffioti then surprised our national competitors with a generous donation from RRE covering the balance of their competition expenses. Brooke and Gabby arrived in Hobart with the Western Australian team for a final training session on the Thursday morning. The afternoon was left up to the athletes to explore Hobart. Not surprisingly, the famous Cadbury Chocolate Factory was the first stop and allowed some big kids to reveal the little kid inside. Mount Wellington provided a spectacular view of Hobart and surrounds, although it had snow on top and was a bone-chilling minus one degree celsius. Friday brought the start of the Nationals with an excellent day of Kata competition. On Saturday the Kumite weight divisions commenced, where Gabby performed admirably in her event and scored some great punches. Brooke also fought well and scored a spot in the Bronze medal match, unfortunately lost on decision. Sunday was a chance for the WA competitors to compete in the open and team divisions. After a late call up to the Women’s Team event, Brooke was placed in the team as a reserve and achieved a bronze medal. Our national competitors would like to wholeheartedly thank major sponsors Roleystone Real Estate for their continuous support of Kofukan Karate Roleystone, together with Kofukan Karate Australia and the efforts of the members, family and friends who supported their fundraising.
Without this support and belief in their ability, the memorable trip to Hobart would not have been possible. Brooke and Gabby hope that their Nationals experiences will aid the growth of the association. The experience they have gained is invaluable and they hope to assist fellow students who will one day also compete for their state. By Brooke Williams.

Roleystone’s Local Star Dear Editor, While visiting my Mum in Roleystone, I came across the advertisement calling for mention of Local Stars and I felt compelled to drop you a line. I believe my Mum is a local star of Roleystone. I am putting forward Francine Brereton as a local star for the work she has commenced in the Roleystone community through the not-for-profit organisation MADI Works Inc. She delivers innovative, engaging and fun programs that teach children and adults alike the power to speak and the power to respond to any situation that makes them feel unsafe (from minor issues to someone needing help to deal with a serious situation of abuse). Towards the end of 2012, Fran ran a version of one the programs “Mega MADI Super Star’ at the Roleystone Community College. With the program based around a short play, the students took part in learning and discussing the messages of MADI before the kids performed the play which included song and dance to their peers and teachers. As a result, the children were able to pass on the protective behaviour strategies
in their own unique way. There seems an ever present need in the media for programs like this, however I think people can be frightened of how their problems can be dealt with and who they can go to. With a little bit more exposure, I believe that MADI Works Inc. will address the issue of protective behaviours in a fun nonthreatening way to all sorts of groups, sporting groups and after school care etc. The MADI Works aside, Fran is engaged in many projects and has a unique and wonderful way of relating to people of all ages and walks of life. She is also the Director of the dance company Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. who are due to be running some performing arts workshop classes in Roleystone in the October school holidays. This will give local kids some extra options for fun and physical activity over the school break. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Kind Regards, Tamara Artemis.
Unplugged Acoustic Folk Roots & Blues A massive thank you to everyone who came along to the ‘Unplugged’ session on Sunday September the 8th. At first, I thought I was going to be it for the afternoon, and asked the bar staff to phone ‘Rent- A-Crowd’ for me, and with that the room filled almost instantly. It was great to see both new faces and old friends. It soon became so packed at one point, that I thought we would run out of time before I could get everyone in front of the mike. A couple of new faces created great interest, and international singer, songwriter, and musician Andrew Bond lit the room up with several selfpenned songs and a couple of covers. Andrew has been living here for 5 years, and hails from the UK. Local guitarist Andrew Bond and general classy entertainer Mike provided some smooth blues guitar and vocals. Two thirds of ‘Beatzwukin’ played us through some easy listening, having just released their new CD. If you’re interested in a CD, you can go to their website. Mike Our next meet-up will be on Sunday the 13th of October, starting at 3:00pm at the Roleystone Country Club. For more details, contact Mel at mgyoung@ westnet.com.au, or text 0406 190 822.

No matter what, the pain of losing a child will always be one of the most devastating emotions a parent can feel. By providing our items we are hopeful we can help in some small way at a time of absolute despair. Receiving your babies ashes in a zip lock bag and box is utterly heartbreaking, so through items such as Huggle Bears, we aim to ensure the process isn’t any more distressing than it already is.” Any one wishing to donate or learn more about Levi’s Gift is encouraged to find them on www. facebook.com/levisgift or email levisgift@gmail.com.

On Saturday 3rd August, the Cannington Bowling Club welcomed people from across Perth as they arrived in their best bogan attire. The entertainment was nothing short of classic bogan as footy shorts and lycra were split from fits of laughter. The Roleystone contingent did not disappoint, with several tables booked out by some rather foxy ladies and one or two hunks of spunk. Silent auctions were bid on, games played and some rather competitive bogan pride displayed when vying for King and Queen Bogan. Despite being an excellent excuse to get out the flannies and mullets, the event was a brilliant platform to raise much-needed funds and awareness to Levi’s Gift charity. Considering the nominal ticket price was just $15.00 per person, the night was a huge success in raising over $6,000. Levi’s Gift was set up in honour of Levi Joseph Sawkins, who was born still on 22nd October 2012. It is a multifaceted charity that aims to assist families experiencing the heartbreak of losing a child as well as supporting children in need. Levi’s Gift is currently fundraising for Cuddle Cots and Huggle Bears. A Cuddle Cot is a system that uses a small machine to circulate and cool water through to a small pad placed in a cot. This enables grieving parents to spend precious time with their baby before it is sent to the mortuary. With a pouch and receptacle for baby’s ashes, a Huggle Bear is invaluable comfort for parents after losing their baby. Here is a message from Lucy Sawkins, Levi’s mother and co-founder of the charity.

The RJFC celebrated 40 years in the community with a fantastic day at Springdale Park. A highlight of the event was the ‘Old Boys’ game, which saw many present and old members of the club strap on the boots and give the body a workout. Cliff ‘Cometti’ Mazzucchelli had the right idea by commenting on the match instead of playing, while Karl Turpin ‘miked’ himself up as he grabbed the Umpire’s whistle! The winner between the Roley Originals and Roley Hillbillies was the Club, with a huge crowd turning up to cheer on the lads and enjoy the match. There were many catch-ups and laughs, with former members enjoying old memorabilia and photos of past teams and players. The clubs first coach, Joe Valenta, was also there, still going strong. RJFC thanks Chris Horgan, ‘The Ferrymen’ and Kim Bettenay for entertaining the crowd and playing some fantastic rock music, while thanks must also go to Rod and Judy Thorne for their hard work and long day in the Canteen... the food was wonderful. Finally, congratulations to Samantha Saffioti and her team for organising the 40 Year Anniversary, which proved to be an outstanding success for ‘The Mighty Tigers’.

DDSA Cross Country Last month, students from Roleystone Community College competed against five other schools in the annual DDSA interschool cross country. The event was held on the grounds of Roleystone Community College. The course for year 4 and 5 students was 1.5km while the year 6 and 7 students had the demanding challenge of 2km. With the weather holding off for most of the day, Roleystone runners were highly competitive, placing well inside the top ten in most year groups. This added to our team total, which eventuated in RCC taking out the title for the second year in a row. Final standings: RCC 140 points, Kelmscott PS 113 points, Armadale PS 78 points, Challis PS 55 points, Westfield PS 21 points, and Neerigen Brook PS 19 points. Congratulations to the whole team of runners including our reserves who helped push the team towards success. Thanks to all the house captains and parents who assisted on the day in marshalling and place judging, and a big congratulations goes to the individual medallists who
took out 1st, 2nd or 3rd place medallions. 1st place medallists: Kasey-Lee Berrington year 4 girls, Callum Walmsley year 5 boys and Fayth Rimmer year 6 girls. 2nd place medallists: Tia Littlecott Year 5 girls, Tomas Koval year 5 boys and Sam DeAndrade year 5 boys. 3rd place medallists: Abena Selormey year 5 girls and Mia Williams year 6 girls.

Registrations were held at the Roleystone Shopping Centre last month, and we are very happy to see that the number of registrations has gone up from last year. We are now tackling the task of sorting them all out into teams for the upcoming season. We will be fielding 10 Tee-ball teams in total this year. We will have the Bears, Dragonz, Rockets and Supas for our U8’s, the Braves, Rollers and Royals for our U10’s, and the Bandits, Dugites and Nitros for our U13’s. The club would like to wish Joshua Johnson, Tomas Koval, Cassie Dempsey and Connor Olesen all the very best in the tryouts at TBAWA for places in this year’s Supersquad. If chosen, they will participate in demonstration games at TBAWA-organised carnivals and some Perth Heat events. On Sunday the 1st of September, TBAWA organised a “Have A Go” Day at Langley Park in Perth. Luckily, the rain held off for a while, allowing all who attended to have a most enjoyable day. Perth Heat players mingled and talked with some very impressed youngsters, who have big hopes of making the big league one day, just like their idols. It was a carnival-style atmosphere with batting cages, pitching machines for the older children and foam bats and balls for the really young. We would like to thank our sponsors for this year, and would encourage everyone to use their services in appreciation of their support to our club.

The request for a skate park by our young people goes back a long time. In fact, many of the youth who first requested a new skate park are now adults and more than likely have their own children. Back in the early 2000s, the community was unhappy with the general appearance of central Roleystone with its rundown skate park, toilets, playground, hall and surrounding areas. The breakthrough came in 2005 during the state election. Geoff Gallop (then Premier) travelled to Roleystone Shopping Centre and lobbied to commit $250,000 to the area if the Labor Party was reelected. Despite victory, Gallop’s reelection commitment and action was slow. As a result, Denise Hardie and myself held a community workshop through (then) Roleystone Drug Action group. White paper was stuck up on the walls of an empty office in Roleystone Shopping Centre for the community to write down their ideas for revitalisation of the area. The issues previously identified resurfaced with the majority wanting the hall upgraded, new toilets and playground
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS 19 OCTOBER 2013 CITY OF ARMADALE JARRAH WARD VOTE 1 FOR THEO DEN HAAN My family and I have lived in the City of Armadale for the last 40 years, with the last 28 years in Karragullen. Having recently retired, I find myself the position to use the skills, knowledge and experience gained during my career for the betterment of the community in which we live. Prior to retirement, I worked both as an employee and a self employed consultant in the mining and aviation industries locally throughout Western Australia and overseas in Papua New Guinea. From my career experiences I am able to bring the following to bear on the position of Councillor: • General and strategic management experience; • Change management skills with both organisations and communities; • A balance of corporate and operational experience; • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills; • Understanding of and empathy to the needs of local and external stakeholders. If elected, I would apply all my skills, knowledge and experience to the issues facing our community including, but not exclusive to others, the ever present danger of bush fires in the Jarrah Ward, community infrastructure and recreation requirements and strive to make our community a better and safer place to live. The Club’s annual sausage sizzle and cake stall at the Ray Owen Sports Centre took place on Saturday the 24th of August. The committee members would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped out on the day, especially the kids on the cake stall who were more than willing helpers! PET FIRST AID COURSE AT FOOTHILLS ANIMAL HOSPITAL Foothills Animal Hospital will offer a pet first aid course on 6 October 2013 from 2:30pm at Foothills Animal Hospital, 23 Thomas St, Armadale. The course will be lead by Dr Nathan Mannix, who has spent 5 years as an emergency and critical care veterinarian in the US and Australia. The course will cover handling and safety of injured animals, CPR, poisons, snakebites and bandaging. Places are limited to 20 people and the cost is $40 (includes a free pet first aid kit). Call 9497 7488 or visit www.foothillsanimalhospital.com. au for more information. Snakebites can be life threatening for pets, but quick action can save your pet’s life. Dr Nathan Mannix of Foothills Animal Hospital warns owners to be vigilant for snakes as warm weather approaches. ‘We have already seen a snakebite this spring, and as the weather gets warmer, pet owners need to understand and be on the lookout for snakes and the signs of snakebite. Snakebites can be difficult to detect. Often a pet owner won’t see bleeding, swelling or bite marks. Immediate reactions to a snakebite include vomiting, rapid breathing, trembling, clumsiness or collapse which may lead to paralysis or death. I encourage anyone who thinks their pet has been in contact with a snake to take them to a vet. The sooner a pet is treated with anti-venom, the better chance they will have to recover from a potentially fatal bite.’ If your pet has been outside and shows any of these immediate reactions: • Do NOT try and catch the snake for identification; • Keep your pet calm and still; • Get them to a veterinarian as soon as Emergencies till 9pm 7 days “Warm Hearts for Cold Noses” possible. ‘If treated immediately, pets have a good chance of survival and recovery. The best course of action is to keep your pet as calm and still as possible.’ Snakebites are relatively common with fatal effects. The potency of venom is highest • 10 Years Experience during the warmest months of the season, • Waxing • Tinting • Spray Tans while the length of the bite dictates how severe • Lash Extensions (using clusters) your pet’s reaction will be. • Manicure/Pedicure - Acrylic & Shellac Nails Owners are urged to keep their pets on a leash Appointments during school hrs preferred in areas such as dunes, long grass, bushland, and along rivers.

Infrastructure Asset Management Plan The City has prepared an “Infrastructure Asset Management Plan” for major asset classes - roads, stormwater drains, pathways, public open space and buildings. Asset management planning is essential to maintain service and facility standards. Interesting points to note included; The majority of the community were satisfied with the City’s asset performance. The current “asset portfolio” (current replacement cost) is $800million constituting $450million roads, $150million buildings, $130million drains, $50million paths and $15million parks. As the City grows from 70,000 to 122,000 residents in 15 years the City’s “asset portfolio” will grow from $800million to $1300million. There is 4.8million m2 of road seal, 5.3million m2 of road pavement and 1million metres of kerbing assets. Around 80% of the road network is sealed in asphalt (over 500km) and around 15% is bitumen seal (120km). There are 600km of stormwater pipes with a replacement value of $72million. There are 355km of pathways - 320km of concrete, 10km of asphalt, 10km brickpaved and 15km redoxide asphalt, all with a replacement value of $50million. The City has 163 buildings with a combined floor area of 51,000m2. These include 32 clubhouses, 22 Community Recreation Centres, 5 family Centres, 5 suburban fire stations, 3 Libraries and 7 Town Halls – all together a current replacement cost of $150million. Most of the buildings are thankfully in good to fair condition. The City has 519 Public Open
Spaces, with 1100 fixtures and structures, 440 pieces of furniture, 280 lights, 240 water facilities and 200 play facilities with replacement values of $6.8million, $1million, $2.6million, $7.6million and $3million respectively. This report can be found in the September 2013 Technical Services Committee minutes. City of Armadale 2013/2014 Budget The Council has passed the Annual Budget (see August Committee minutes). The Technical Services budget - approximately $50million expense ($12million roads, $7million employment and $24million project works - civil, parks, property and waste), includes allocations for “Streetscapes” in Jarrah road precinct, upgrade to Hellenic Road, speed cushions on Waterwheel Road, resurfacing Karragullen Hall carpark, new paths on sections of Hart, Tyres, Trestrail and Peet roads, 2 bus shelter renewals on Brookton and Holden roads, new security at Churchman’s Brook Community Centre, minor improvements to Karragullen Hall, Roleystone Guide Hall, Roleystone Hall, Roleystone Seniors Centre, further allocations towards Cross Park and Karragullen bores/irrigation and BBQ renewal at Springdale. The Community, Development and Corporate Services budgets include $6.7million, $4.7million and $3.8million for employment respectively. Caroline Wielinga. Year 2 Incursion On Wednesday the 11th of September, the Year 2 students from Good Shepherd in Kelmscott had an incursion visit from Scitech Spacedome. The kids had so much fun in the dome, and were so excited to see how the sky looks in both night and day. Codi learnt that the stars are out all the time, but all the light that shines from the sun during the day stops us from seeing them. Reem liked it when the dome was spinning around, because she actually felt like she was spinning too! School in Kelmscott enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture and history at the Hills Forest Discovery Centre in Mundaring. They took part in the ‘Moodjitch Binar’ program, which gave them excellent opportunities to learn from experienced leaders about traditional Nyoongar culture. The program allowed students to role play a day in the life of an Aboriginal child, through traditional singing, face painting and jewellery making. The students also had the opportunity to engage in hunting and gathering, using traditional Nyoongar tools. The students willingly participated throughout the day, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 4 Excursion to the Fremantle Prison On Monday the 9th of September, Year 4 students from the Good Shepherd Catholic Primary in Kelmscott left the campus to begin their day of fun and learning at the Fremantle Prison! This term’s program is designed to support learning outcomes in the Society and Environment learning area, particularly the “Time, Continuity and Change”, and “Investigation, Communication and Participation” strands. The Fremantle Prison tours are designed specifically to fit in with these strands, which made it The Convict History Tour the perfect excursion. The students in Year 4 were filled with excitement as they ate their recess overlooking The Fremantle Prison. When we hit the gates of the Fremantle Prison, WA’s only World Heritage building, Year 4 students were transported back in time to learn about previous inmates, how the prison began, and the process that saw it close. Students experienced living history as they saw the tiny cells in which people lived day after day, the stunning art painted onto the walls and the inspiring convictmade architecture. Students were fascinated, and at times scared, as they made their way through the echoing prison. Overall, the Year 4 students enjoyed a fantastic day out in the world, learning about the history of WA’s most famous prison.
It’s been said that sunshine is the best disinfectant, a saying that certainly rings true in the groundbreaking world premiere of the darkly funny “Alice and Margo”, opening at the Subiaco Arts Centre on the 17th of September. Entertaining, compelling, heartbreaking and uplifting, “Alice and Margo” is the story of two longtime friends who enjoy their yearly weekend away from home, but come to realise one year that they are both in abusive marriages. The play was written by Anne V. McGravie, the author of “Wrens”, “Poppins”, and the “The Cairn Stones”, and directed by Jenny Davis, who has worked with Agelink Theatre, WA Youth Theatre, and the Perth Theatre Company. Film, television and theatre actress Libby Stone is returning to Perth stages after years in Melbourne to play Alice, with fellow “Stingers” actress Sharon Kershaw as Margo. The Perth season will run from Tuesday the 17th to Saturday the 28th of September, with hopes for a regional season, and perhaps even a production trip to America, to follow. In particular, there are hopes of playing in Chicago, the home of the play’s author. The “Alice and Margo” production has partnered with The White Ribbon Campaign and launched a Pozible campaign, since it is essentially without any funding. You can go to the website here: http:pozible.com/ aliceandmargo. To book tickets to the play, go to Ticketek.

Walk the Zig Zag is a unique free community event which combines the picturesque Zig Zag Scenic drive in Gooseberry Hill with the fun of a family festival. Now in its 13th year, the annual Spring walk down the Zig Zag Scenic Drive attracts over 4000 participants as walkers of all ages wind their way down the 3km scenic route, enjoying the beautiful scenery and a range of entertainment and stalls along the way. To get there, we offer a free park and ride service from Stirk Park in Kalamunda and Maida Vale Reserve on Ridgehill Road to the top of the Zig Zag. Local government elections occur every two years and this year, after persuasive encouragement from members of our community, I have decided to nominate for the vacant position as elected representative for Roleystone and Karragullen. In 2 years time, the Armadale Council will be merged with the Shire of SerpentineJarradale. I am well-versed with the amalgamation process proposed by government, and will advocate for our community not to be disadvantaged. For the past 3 years, I have being working with a group of likeminded people in establishing the Community Men’s Shed and the Community Garden. I am also the current chair of the garden group and project coordinator at the shed. I have witnessed senseless petty crimes at the Men’s Shed and Community Garden. I strongly support the Armadale Police station becoming a 24 hour station, and regardless of that outcome, will advocate for an increased police presence, and endeavour to rebuild Neighbourhood Watch. The fires that tore through our community in 2011 demonstrated how vulnerable we are. The capacity of the Volunteer Fire Fighters stationed in Roleystone must increase, so that fire mitigation plans can be achieved. An additional

light tanker permanently stationed in the district will be a step in the right direction. Bio-security of the productive orchards is important to us all, as it is a feature of our community that makes it a unique and a pleasant place to call home. The livelihood of second and third generation orchardists must be protected. I have set myself a big challenge, but with time and determination I hope to be successful. Still, I can not achieve what I hope without your help. I seek your support on election day. I am willing to discuss these, and any other matters of concern. THE CLUB IS NOW OPEN MONDAY TO FRIDAY – REFER TO CALENDAR FOR ACTIVITIES
testimoniAl 21st August 2013 Dear Maggie, Patrick, Jo & Linda, Ernie and I were most impressed with the results that your team achieved in the short time our house was on the market. After having our home on the market two years previously with 2 other agents, we were very apprehensive. We feared a repeat of a very lack-lustre marketing campaign and poor negotiating skills. We subsequently took the property off the market. From our first meeting, it was evident that your marketing skills and methods would pay dividends. We weren’t disappointed. After only 2 ‘home opens’ and 13 days on the market – we were elated when 2 offers were presented. This is proof that your expertise and knowledge of the local market are the winning combination that gets results. Little things, such as a list of recommended local Settlement Agencies made our selling experience stress-free. We have already recommended MBRE to friends in the area and will continue to do so.
