It is that time of the year when reptiles come out of hibernation. Lizards and snakes look for a cleared space, preferably a dark surface which attracts heat, to warm their bodies, giving them vital energy to allow them to move. The road is an ideal place.

It is easy to run over snakes and lizards either by not seeing them or thinking that they have been killed. The observant driver can save many lives by pulling off the road to a safe place and encouraging the little creature off the road, or in the case of the slow moving bobtail, picking it up by placing a finger and thump securely around its neck. The bobtail may appear frightening when it opens its mouth, but it is not dangerous. Dubbed “The Happiest 5K on the Planet” the Swisse Color Run brought swarms of colourful runners through Perth’s Langley Park on Sunday 3rd of November. Around 3,000 kilograms of blue, pink, orange and yellow coloured powder was used across the day for the 16,000 participants. More than $67,000 in proceeds from the event will go to the Princess Margaret Foundation, which works in the community to raise much-needed funding for the Princess Margaret Hospital. The event originated in the US in January 2012 and is inspired partly by the Hindu Holi Festival, with its tradition of welcoming spring by throwing natural coloured powders. I recently found the ‘for sale’ sign near my home pushed over and destroyed. This mindless vandalism seems to be on the increase around Roleystone and it makes me irate. What a wonderful official opening of the Roleystone Skate Park! It was a long awaited celebration of the tireless and persistent efforts of many wonderful people in our community. Thank You! I would like to thank the young people of our community. You earned it, so take pride and ownership in the gift you have received. I would also like to thank the Armadale City Council and, in particular, Bianca and Lisa, as they created a perfect event that was enjoyed by all. Thank you to the Mayor Henry Zelones for taking the time to officially open the skate park. Roley’s on the Ridge set to receive 2014 Prix D’Honneur The 2013 Annual Gold Plate awards were held on 28th October at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The prestigious event celebrates the winners of the coveted Gold Plates. A great number of WA restaurants from Broome to Margaret River compete and are anonymously judged throughout the year. Local restaurant Roley’s on the Ridge has again been victorious, winning the Gold Plate in Family Dining for the third consecutive year. Roley’s is the only restaurant to have achieved this, and will be awarded the highest honour: a 2014 Prix D’Honneur Award. Family dining is close to the hearts of the owners. With two young children, they understand many of the things that parents appreciate when dining out. These include having some healthy menu items combined with the traditional favourites and the value of innovative presentation. Roley’s has a kids corner with toys, books, an art board and even an old fashioned till! Kids are encouraged to wander down, have a play, enter the monthly colouring-in competition and give Mum and Dad a little time to themselves. Roley’s has excelled in the lengthy judging criteria. The Catering Institute of Australia judge venues more than once and even employ their own private health inspector to randomly complete a full check of every aspect of the kitchen. In turn, the restaurants have no idea who the ‘mystery judges’ are. There were many entries in this year’s Family Dining category, with six finalists in the final round of the competition, including Gnarabar at Gnarabup, Jetty’s Restaurant at Hillarys and Lo Zucchero at City Beach. The owners say that the secret of their success is their amazing staff and the wonderful customers who have shown so much support over the years.

MIA FLORA CRAFTY DAY The weather was perfect, the crowd came and 20 stall holders turned up for the first Crafty Day held in the lovely gardens of Mia Flora. There were many items for sale including rustic reindeers, birdhouses, bonsai, textiles, wood-turned items, patchwork and much more. There was an overwhelming response to the “Expressions of Interest”, although it was a bit disappointing that some who had registered did not turn up. Requests were made for this event to become an annual item on the Roleystone calendar and this will be considered for the future. A big thank you must go to John at Mia Flora for allowing us to use the lovely surrounds and also to the wonderful crafts people who responded and participated. The total stall charges for the day ($125) were donated to the Cancer Council. A huge thank you to the stall holders for their donation. Everyone went home with something they had bought and were very happy with some things they had sold. Thank you one and all. Marjorie.

ART EXHIBITION - 4 IN DIVERSITY Three members of the Armadale Society of Artists, Christina Verbrugge, Isabel Colenutt and Irene Young along with Wayne Jeffery, a brilliant local sculptor from Byford, will be exhibiting their art at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda from 16th - 30th November 2013. The exhibition is called “4 in Diversity” and showcases the artists’ love for Australian fauna and flora in a wonderful display of art produced in different mediums around the theme of nature. In partnership with Kaarakin: The Black
Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre, 10% of art sales will help rehabilitate the beautiful yet endangered Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos and Canabys Cockatoos living in our local habitat. There were many friendly faces showing their support on the opening night, with lots of visitors enjoying a close up experience with the Cockatoos. In late October we took a road trip to Kalgoorlie with our 9.5-year-old sons Jude and Beck. We’d never been to this area before and wanted to do some gold prospecting, visit the Super Pit and see the Anthony Gormley sculptures at Lake Ballard. I love road trips because the journey is part of the holiday. We spent the first day walking around Kalgoorlie town centre and its fantastic Museum. We had lunch at Hammond Park overlooking the replica Bavarian Castle and then wandered around the old pioneer graves of the cemetery. The wide streets and old building frontages evoked a feel of the Wild West. We experienced the fantastic Super Pit Tour the following day. We saw the huge dump trucks drop their payload into the crusher and the enormous amount of ore crushed just to get 3 house bricks of gold. We then went to Hannan’s Tourist Mine to try gold panning. It was a lot of fun and I even found several small flakes of gold. We had hired professional grade metal detectors at Reed’s Prospecting and took them up with us. It was very hot and unfortunately we didn’t find anything beyond bits of tin… a great experience nonetheless. Driving off track in our 4WD was a new and exciting experience. One of the highlights was a dust devil going straight through our path in the bush around White Flag Lake. After being sand blasted, the

boys were very excited and wondered if I’d been sucked up. On one of the days, we took a 2-hour drive out to Menzies and Lake Ballard. Although the lake was stunning with a huge hill rising up from nowhere followed by 51 metal sculptures, the area was barren, desolate and a little eerie. I was fooled by the water effect haze in the distance and now understand the dangers of walking in the desert to an ‘oasis’ you can ‘see’ in the distance. We went to Danny’s Restaurant on our last night and the food was excellent. On the way back, we stopped at Coolgardie and checked out the fantastic Town Hall and Pharmacy Museum as well as Jack Carin’s old shack on the outskirts, which he lived in for 30 years. Our last stop was at the earthquake site in Meckering. I didn’t even know we had earthquakes so close to us. We had a great time discovering this unique part of Australia and enjoyed being immersed in so much history. It’s well worth checking out and you wouldn’t need more than a few days. Others expressed concern that millions of animals, birds and plants of the forest would be killed in the logging process. Also, the survival of many forest species will be threatened under the plan to log between 1,500sqkm and 2,000sqkm of native forest over the duration of the intended 10-year plan. Mr Weir said that conservationists’ concerns should not to be taken lightly by the State Government as the Minister for Environment moves closer to signing the proposed 10-year Forest Management Plan covering the 2014-2023 period. Forest issues have the ability to ignite public passion and bridge the gap between political parties. This was evident between 1995 and 2001 when the debate raged across the political spectrum and brought many high profile people into the debate.

On Saturday the 19th of October, the Last Stand Rally in Forrest Place attracted over 1,000 people as the forest debate in Western Australia re-emerged into the public arena as a major issue. Throughout the rally, passionate speakers raised grave concerns about the past and future management of South West native forests. Patrick Weir, the coordinator of the Forest Legacy, staged the rally. The goal is to see a paradigm shift in forest management that would end all logging in South West native forests, build a bigger timber industry in plantations (in line with the example of South Australia), and preserve all South West native forests to earn an income from the sale of carbon credits and reduce the risk of climate change. ‘Logging South West native forests is a killing industry, a dying industry and an industry on life support at a cost to taxpayers of $9.5 million each year. With any life support, there comes a time when it must be withdrawn and that time has come for the Native Forest Timber Industry,’ said Mr Weir. Speakers expressed great concern that forest areas of high conservation value containing trees up to 600 years old are being logged to supply woodchip to the international market.

SMARTER THAN SMOKING AWARDS Roleystone Community College is excited to announce that our Year 8 film students have been awarded top honours in this year's Smarter Than Smoking Young Directors Festival. The winning 30 second commercial will be screened at Armadale Grand Cinema before each movie during the summer. More than 200 community members, students, teachers and families attended the gala awards event, which debuted the first screening of youth made antismoking television commercials. The competition was tough, with six schools in the area submitting 7 entries. The judges were lead by a panel of
leading WA health agencies and Murdoch University. A Smarter Than Smoking youth committee member said Roleystone Community College's commercial with the tagline of 'Live life, love life, don't smoke’, successfully communicated the social cost of smoking. All youth made television commercials are now available for viewing at http:// www.futureinyourhands.com.au. Coordinated by the Smarter than Smoking Project and South Metropolitan Public Health Unit in Armadale, the Smarter than Smoking Young Directors Festival is an innovative approach to health promotion in the school setting.

Girls on the Porch has seen a few changes in 2013. We said goodbye to Sarah Holland and hello to Melati Hall and welcomed a change in venue for our annual fundraising event. After the success of our Mother’s Day High Tea in May, we charged into the preparations for the annual October event. For the first time since its establishment in 2007, Girls on the Porch travelled to Fremantle, where Events Manager Anthony Brandis helped create a memorable function at the Fremantle Esplanade by Rydges. Once again, we were blown away by the donations from our more than generous donators. There were amazing prizes in homewares, pamper, food and wine, jewellery, deluxe accommodation, silent auction and the much anticipated “Big One”. A huge thank you to all the businesses, local and further afield, for your support. We were very privileged and excited to have representatives from the National Breast Cancer Foundation attend our function. Gabriel Lacoba, Manager of Community Fundraising, spoke about current research projects and the hope that by 2030 there will be no more deaths from breast cancer. The feedback from Sydney regarding the event has been more than positive. To all those who attended, they pass on their thanks to you for helping raise much needed funds. Maggie Munkley was our speaker for 2013. She spoke about dealing with breast cancer after feeling a lump the size of a pinhead, reinforcing the importance of having the slightest difference quickly checked. Maggie, thank you for your support and best wishes for the future. It goes without saying that we send a huge thank to our Pink Ladies Maria, Gina and Melati for all their help. A very special thank you must go to the helpful staff at the Fremantle Esplanade and our helpers Fiona, Tania and Renee. We thank Ze Photography for providing a photo booth for our guests to capture memorable moments. There was also entertainment by Pretty Fly and Abbasalutely. If the number of people dancing was a gauge, the day was a great success. Thank you to Karen and her bands… you were amazing. CANE TOAD IDENTIFICATION The Department of Environment and Conservation recently celebrated the launch of Western Australia’s first cane toad identification app for mobile devices. Developed by the University of Western Australia and the DEC, the app helps people distinguish between cane toads and native frogs. “People can download the smart phone and tablet app from the iTunes store and use the visual, audio and written information to help differentiate between cane toads and native frogs of the Kimberley region,” said DEC State Cane Toad Initiative program coordinator Corrin Everitt. The app contains three main areas: • Frogs and Toads - seven native Kimberley frogs and toads in three stages of the life cycle (juvenile, metamorph and adult) are profiled.
The information includes size, colour, distinguishing features, breeding and location, plus high resolution images and an audio file. • Frog Log - enables the user to document frog sightings, establish a GPS location and utilise the mobile device’s camera and recording functions. • Cane Toad - provides more information about toad handling, reporting toad sightings, and URL links for more information. The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) is encouraging people to use the app on their mobile device as well as their computer to distinguish between native frogs and cane toads. All cane toad sightings should be reported to the Cane Toad Hotline by calling 1800 449 453, by texting a photograph to 0400 693 807, or canetoads@dpaw.wa.gov.au.

Sprouts are a delicious and nutritious addition to any meal. They are simple to prepare and their magic works while you don’t. All you need is good quality water and something to sprout in a bowl! A personal favorite is Mung beans. Just place whole, raw Mung beans in a bowl of water and set aside on the bench top to sprout (if it is hot, leave overnight). Rinse and replace with fresh water daily. Once the sprouting process has begun, place in the fridge to avoid over fermenting and mould. If mould does appear, discard into the garden immediately. Add to salads, raw ‘fried rice’, nori, curries... or eat as they are. They are a deliciously addictive snack. Mung sprout salad Below is a simple salad and dressing recipe that will be a hit with the whole family, including the children. Feel free to chop and change ingredients to suit your taste, the seasons and what is growing in your garden. Ingredients: • 2 cups Mung sprouts (2 days sprouting optimal) • 1 zucchini, finely diced • 4-6 kale leaves (depending on size and how much you like); cut into small pieces • 6 cos lettuce leaves, cut or broken into sizes of your preference. • 1 grated carrot • 1 cup sunflower seeds • 1 cup pepitas • 1 ripe avocado (diced, or roughly chopped into chunks) • 1-2 celery sticks, finely diced • Fresh herbs to your taste (parsley is great) • 1 lemon, juiced • 1 orange, juiced (let the pulp fall in if you like) • Salt and pepper to taste Photograph courtesy of Deanna White. • Good quality olive oil For flavour and health benefits, add a touch of apple cider vinegar (make sure you buy good quality apple cider vinegar as it is wonderful for putting the ‘good bugs’ back into the stomach). If you decide to add apple cider vinegar, balance the dressing with some honey or agave as it adds a little heaven to the earthiness of the other ingredients. Alternatively, you can add currants or dried blue berries. Place all the ingredients into a bowl and shower in olive oil, citrus juices and apple cider vinegar (optional). Mix thoroughly with your hands. Add a few leaves of your chosen herb and a sprinkle of seeds on top. Add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy this nutrient dense salad. Serve with egg and sourdough bread for a lovely breakfast, or place salad into cos lettuce leaves for a tasty ‘bread wrap’ alternative. The Kelmscott Library provides local writers of the group Come Write In with a venue twice monthly to meet and progress writing skills in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The group recently published its thirteenth anthology of members’ creative prose and poetry. ‘Initially, members focused solely on family history, but the session has grown into a wonderful platform for people who enjoy writing to explore the expressive power of the English language’, says group member Neil Macdonald. There are no special requirements
to join and new members are always welcome. The first two visits are free. Members pay $20 a year ($10 for six months) or $2 per session. If you love writing, this is the perfect environment to share your creative skills with other like-minded people. Members improve their writing skills through constructive feedback and sometimes proceed to publish their own work. The Roleystone Christmas Market will be held on Sunday 8th December from 2pm til 7pm and promises to be an awesome chance to get the Christmas list sorted. To fit in with the holiday theme, students from local schools will be performing on stage. The Roleystone Singers will also be performing Christmas carols and some crowd favourites, while Paul Peacock has very kindly donated his time and fabulous voice to entertain us all. We have received confirmation from the North Pole that Santa will be popping onto the oval to visit all the children in the afternoon. We have advised him that landing the sleigh would just be impossible with all of our wonderful stallholders set up, and he has spoken to a friend of his who has offered him a novel solution to get around and meet all the kids.

ACTORS NEEDED FOR ‘BRILLIANT LIES’ Garrick Theatre is looking for actors in its first season of 2014 when Director Dale James will be directing David Williamson’s ‘Brilliant Lies’. Williamson is known for his extensive range of plays including Don’s Party, The Club, Travelling North, Money and Friends as well as the screenplays Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, Phar Lap and Balibo. ‘Brilliant Lies’ is described as a serious comedy about sexual harassment in the workplace, focusing on political correctness and changing social values. It was made into a 1996 film with Anthony LaPaglia, Gia and Zoe Carides and Ray Barrett. PERTH RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER with weary legs, but with our last pit-stop at Preston Point Reserve in Bicton, we were ready for the final 15kms to Macallum Park and the glorious finish line - 113.8kms later. We did it! Day one commenced with a 5am wake-up followed by a 7am race start at Macallum Park in South Perth. From here, we made our way along Albany Highway, with a quick stop at Fancote Park, on through Byford with lunch in Serpentine. The next 30kms proved to be the hardest of the weekend, with the rain pounding down and the wind blowing us backwards. 103kms later, we finally made it to camp in Pinjarra. Coffee, massage, yoga, warm showers and yummy food awaited us along with inspirational stories and people all fighting to conquer cancer. Day two saw us back on our bikes at 6.30am, up the freeway, along Safety Bay Road with lunch at Rockingham. The next 40kms was a bit hairy riding in traffic

On the 3rd of November, Roleystone Theatre celebrated its 80th birthday with a picnic party at Churchman Brook Dam. A barbecue lunch was followed by fun and games, including the classics pass the parcel, an egg and spoon race and pin the tail on the donkey. Our next production, Peter Pan, is due to open on the 22nd of November. Soon, the lights will go up on this exciting story of the boy who never grew up. This production promises to be entertaining for both young and old. On the 28th of October, Roleystone Theatre sadly lost one of its long time theatre members with the passing of Don Morris. Don joined in the 1970’s when he moved to Roleystone and started working at the then Roleystone Primary School. He has performed and participated ‘behind the scenes’ in numerous productions since joining the
theatre, most recently in The Crucible. He will be greatly missed by many. We are pleased to announce the following productions for our 2014 season: March: The House that Jack Built. the Snakes are on the move As the weather heats up the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) is reminding people to be on high alert for snakes. DPaW wildlife officer Matthew Swan said snake encounters were on the rise as reptiles emerged from their winter hideouts. “Snakes are most active over the next few months and we expect the number of calls from concerned residents who encounter a snake will rise sharply,” he said. “When it comes to snakes, extra care should be taken when venturing outdoors particularly near swamps, lakes and bush land.” “Snakes will normally try to avoid humans, however, people still need to be aware and take precautions such as wearing long pants and enclosed shoes when walking along bush trails.” Mr Swan said most snake bites occurred when people tried to catch or kill the snake. He also urged dog owners to take extra care when walking their dogs near wetlands and bushland areas as they rarely survive a venomous snake bite. “Residents can also reduce the risk of having a snake in their backyard by keeping their yards clear of long grass and discarded household rubbish and building materials,
which provide snakes with shelter,” he said. “Outdoor aviaries often attract snakes and keeping the aviaries and their surrounding area free from discarded bird seed would deter the snakes favourite prey items such as rats and mice.” He said it was also not unusual to find venomous snakes, including dugites and tiger snakes, in the Perth metropolitan area. If you are concerned about a snake on your property, bring your children and pets inside. You can also contact DPaW’s 24-hour Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055 for details of licensed operators who can safely remove and relocate snakes.

GOOD SHEPHERD NEWS The Good Shepherd Catholic School community gathered together in a musical celebration on Wednesday, 30 October. Held in the superb facilities at The Lumen Christi Performing Arts Centre, it was the school’s annual Music Night. Students in Year 3 through to Year 6 all participated in the concert and presented a variety of creative treats for the appreciative audience of family and friends. The evening opened with the Year 3, 4, and 5 choir singing three songs complete with eighty straw hats. The Year 6 class presented two entertaining percussion ensemble pieces using some very sophisticated instruments, plastic buckets and beetroot tins. The evening featured the instrumental music program with performances by the School Band and two woodwind soloists. The concert finished with the Year 6 Choir singing a medley of songs based around the theme of “Under the Sea.” Music Specialist Diana Newman praised the students for their fine performances, thanked the parents for their loving support and praised the staff for helping make the evening a success.

This term the Year 3 students have been focusing on ‘Australia’s Neighbouring Countries’ with the challenge of answering the following essential question: ‘Where are Australia’s neighbouring countries located and what are the similarities and differences between their natural and human characteristics?’ With this in mind, the students have set to work creating a poetry book and developing
Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School celebrated all things Science a few weeks ago. The students from Kindy to Year 6 were treated to a variety of Science based activities, including making slime, monster toothpaste, rainbow bubble snakes, making and tasting sherbet, creating exploding volcanoes, excavating dinosaur fossils, having fun with drawbots, air surfing with walk along gliders and much more. Lumen Christi College joined the Expo once again, generously sharing their time and materials with the students. The Ribbons of Blue ‘Water Catchment Model’ was also on display for students to recognise how important it is to keep our waterways clean and learn ways to be more sustainable. An Open Afternoon was held for the students and their families to enjoy all the activities. The Year 5 and 6 students led the afternoon superbly and were fantastic ambassadors for Science and their school. Students were able to lead their families through the new on-site frog pond ‘Tiddalik’s Place’, which environmental agency SERCUL installed with the help from the Good Shepherd Environment Team. The children were thrilled to see the ecosystem brimming with new life with the arrival of tadpoles. Science Specialist Teacher Kristy Maher is already in planning mode for the 2014 Science Expo. It’s safe to say, at Good Shepherd Kelmscott, GSK also stands for Great Science Kids.

It has been a very busy month at the Club so far. The Quiz Night on the 2nd of November was a huge success, with all tickets sold out in no time. Everyone had a great night with plenty of crowd interaction and fantastic prizes. The Melbourne Cup has come and gone once again. Everyone who attended our Melbourne Cup day came out a winner. The weather was fantastic and the ladies were ravishing in their Cup day finery… even the guys looked very smart, with our Vice President suited up to the nines. The ladies fashion parade, great food and wonderful music made the day fun and lively. Councillors Notes Cut your Grass With the season heating up, fire safety becomes very important. Please remember to mow/slash/ pull any tall grass. A general clean up is also a good idea – sweep and rake up the leaves on paths and drives, and clean up any dead branches. It is a good idea to prune vegetation a few meters away from the eaves and house and check gutters. More information is available on the City and DFES websites. If you are concerned about the fire risk of a property, you can write to the City and request the Rangers inspect. The Rangers have the authority to ask residents to clean up their property if it is determined as dangerous. If you receive such a notice, it is important to act within the given time frame otherwise contractors will be utilised to do the job and the bill will be sent to the resident. The verge and You The verge is part of the ‘road reserve’, a portion of land that is allocated for the placement of power/water/gas/sewerage/

drainage services and for the placement of the actual road and a footpath. The verge is crown land. It is not owned by the Local Government but is ‘vested’ to the Local Government for management. No concomitant funding is vested in the Local Government to maintain the verge. It is preferred that the adjacent resident maintain their verge and garden at the same time. It must be understood that if residents are unable or unwilling to maintain their verge the City will maintain it if deemed dangerous (for fire or sightlines), but the City may not have the funds available to neatly tend to the verges by hand as it is more economical to use a machine. Bethania. A huge thank you must go to Susan Towler for all her efforts and also to the boys who helped Terry run the sweeps. Up and coming events include the Annual Kids Christmas Party on the 22nd of December commencing at 11am until 4pm. There will be a big bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, face painting, drippy dragon puppeteer act and ‘Father Christmas’ will arrive on the fire engine. There will also be live acoustic music from 3pm on the lawn, so come along with the kids and bring your picnic rug. We now have James Squire Orchard Crush Cider on tap for those hot summer days. Also, Chase the Joker is packing the crowds in on Monday and Wednesday nights, with the current prize amount at $2,550. Finally, the new summer menu at our restaurant Windows on Wygonda will start soon. On a sadder note, our first life and foundation member and long-time Roleystone resident Vic Every recently passed away. He was a tireless worker, patron and friend to all at the Club, and we all offer our deepest sympathies to Gwen, Peter, Sue, Ken and family. May the wind always be at your back and the seas calm. Prepare Your Bushfire Survival Plan It Could Save Your Life! If you live in or near bush, developing and using a Bushfire Survival Plan is critical. This plan will help you take action and avoid making last minute decisions that could prove deadly during a bushfire. When developing your plan decide if you will leave for a safer place, which may be to relocate to family or friends, or stay to actively defend your home. Your plan must be prepared and practiced with all members of your family or household before the start of the bushfire season. If you live alone you may like to form a plan with a neighbour. Make sure you write it down, give everybody their own tasks and have a list of actions to take if there is a bushfire. Your plan needs to take into account what you will do based on the Fire Danger Rating. On days of catastrophic or extreme fire weather it is safest to leave early, that is the night before or early in the day. You must decide in what conditions you will stay, if any,
and when it would be best to leave. Do not forget to think about what you will do with your pets and livestock if there is a bushfire. Practice your plan regularly and review it every year, keep it in an easy to find place and make sure everyone knows where it is. Everyone’s Bushfire Survival Plan will be different depending on individual situations and circumstances. A Bushfire Survival Plan guide and further information can be found in the DFES Prepare. Act.
