Bungendore Park Group recently undertook their fifth catch and release monitoring of microbat species, and were fortunate to trap eight microbats, their best effort so far. Echo-location sonograms and trapping have given them a very good picture of the 9 species of microbats inhabiting Bungendore Park. A really great pamphlet “Bats of Bungendore Park”, which has great written information and outstanding drawings of all these various species, is available from the Roleystone Family Centre or City of Armadale Environmental Officers. and Bromeliad plants. Ways of reducing the chance of mosquito breeding in these areas includes buying meshing, cowls and covers, filling drip trays with sand, and drilling holes for drainage in tyres. There are of course many other areas mosquitoes can breed in, and it really is up to everyone to be aware, and act accordingly for your family and pet’s health. It was interesting to hear an attendee at the presentation say that her cat had died through a mosquitoborne disease, and that Murdoch Vets advised they had a number of cats die from similar mosquitorelated disease. A really interesting component of the presentation was lead by SERCUL scientist Rose Weerasinghe, who has undertaken considerable National and International research on the use of biological controls. We were advised of the benefits of biological controls that could be used as part of the coordinated approach to this major issue in WA. Numerous pilot projects have been successfully run in Queensland, and one is currently underway in South Australia using copepods; very tiny crustaceans that live in freshwater and eat mosquito larvae. SERCUL is very keen to pursue this area, and is working with a number of partners to further the opportunities for biological control to be identified as a component of mosquito control in WA. I will give further information To all our loyal advertisers, employees, supporters on this very interesting and and readers, it’s business as usual! exciting opportunity in the next issue of The Valley Reporter. I recently attended a presentation on mosquitoes given by SERCUL, the Department of Health, and the City of Canning. I thought I knew a fair bit about mosquitoes, but it turns out that there is a lot I was not aware of. While there are almost a hundred species of mosquitoes in WA, in the metro area, we have four species. One that breeds in the salt marshes of the wetlands in the Canning River Regional Park, and around the Heirisson Island - Burswood Peninsular area, two that breed in freshwater like backyards and drains, and the one species that makes that annoying buzzing noise when you sleep (but doesn’t bite). It is the female mosquito in the three other species that bites, as she requires the blood to develop the eggs. When they talk about mosquito population numbers, which can breed up in the salt marshes, it is in the trillions. Mosquito control programs by local governments can take out up to 80% of these, depending on the seasonal conditions. The last 2 years, we were advised, had been reasonably good in regards to lower numbers. This was mainly due to the La Nina weather pattern, which influences rainfall and tides. Individual households play a major role in the breeding of mosquitoes, due to availability of standing water. In the summer it only takes seven to ten days for a mosquito to go from egg to flying, whereas it may take several weeks in colder months. Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in standing water, which then evaporates, but the eggs are still able to continue their life cycles weeks later, when water re-enters that site. You may not have thought about it, but there are some areas around your property which are good breeding grounds for mosquitoes, such as pot plant drip trays, rainwater tanks which don’t have insectproof mesh, vent pipes on septic tank systems which do not have mosquito proof cowls, gaps in septic tank lids and leach drains that are not completely covered, old tyres, boats, canoes and dinghies,

Many of us have experienced the discomfort of fungal infections, so I would like to consider four common conditions, as well their treatments and methods of prevention. Oral thrush can affect all ages. Candida albicans is the usual cause, but it can also occur by way of more resistant fungi, such as C. glabrata or C. krusei. Those most at risk of developing oral thrush include now born infants, asthmatics (using inhaled preventer medication), those who are immune-suppressed, or on prolonged antibiotic courses. People with dentures can also be at risk. Oral thrush presents itself as a sore mouth, with white patches on the tongue and inside of the cheeks. Removal of the white plaque reveals a raw reddened surface, which may bleed. It can be treated with topical antifungal drops or gel, which can be obtained directly from the pharmacist. Success is greater when treatment is done as follows: • Four times a day; • Medicine is wiped around the inside of the mouth; • Medicine is held in the mouth for as long as possible, before swallowing; • Given to both mother and child, particularly if they are breast-fed babies. Tinea and Ringworm are two common fungal infections, which are caused by dermatophyte fungi, and are widespread throughout our community. They can be caught from animals, our soil or other people. Tinea infections can occur anywhere on the body, but are most
commonly found in warm moist areas such as between the toes, groin area or under the breasts. Tinea presents itself as an inflamed moist, intensely itchy area of skin, which may also appear white and macerated between toes. When these infections occur in nails, the nails become thickened and discolored, and can be accompanied by patchy hair loss. Ringworm presents itself as a circular inflamed lesion on the skin surface. The ring is often raised with tiny nodules on it, whilst the inside is often scaly and white. Treatment for simple tinea and ringworm includes the use of antifungal creams, lotions, or powders. All must be applied once or twice daily, and should be used for up to 7 days after symptoms have resolved, to ensure that the fungi spores are killed and re-infection does not occur. Nail and scalp infections are often better treated with oral anti-fungal agents, as prescribed by doctors. Pityriasis Versicolor, also known as tinea versicolor, tends to occur over the trunk, neck and shoulders, appearing as pale irregular patches on tanned and dark skinned people, or as darker patches on those who are fair skinned. Treatment is best achieved by the application of topical anti-fungal shampoo preparations. These should be applied either daily, or three days every month over a 4 month period, depending on the product used. These infections tend to be persistent, so long term treatment is often required. If in doubt about what type of fungal infection you need to treat, just ask your friendly pharmacist.

What a great start to 2014 for Girls on the Porch! We are so proud and humbled to announce that we have been awarded a Patron’s Award from the National Breast Cancer Foundation for “Commitment to the Cause”. In February, Melissa and I had the privilege of attending the event in Sydney, where we were delighted to receive the award from Sarah Murdoch, the Patron of the NBCF. The event was held at David on 7, a beautiful venue within the David Jones department store. We were able to meet other community fundraisers from all over the country, the amazing researchers who painstakingly work trying to find a cure, and the outstanding staff of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, who we deal with and who are always on hand when needed. During our stay in Sydney, we were honoured to do a presentation to the staff of the NBCF, letting them all know about Girls on the Porch, such as how we started, how far we have come, all about our amazingly generous donators without whom we would not be able to raise the funds we do, and about our loyal supporters who attend our event each year. This is a great opportunity to let you know that we have already started the process for our event this year! We are pleased to announce that the date of our event will
be Sunday the 19th of October 2014. We will be holding a luncheon at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges. We had such positive feedback from people who attended in 2013, that we are looking forward to holding the event in Fremantle again. Make sure to hold the date in your calendar! This annual event is the highlight on our fundraising calendar. More details will be released in due course. Should you like any further information, or would like to donate to Girls on the Porch, please call Wendy Scott on 0417 983 695, or Melissa Addison-Edgar on 0422 352 187.

Several members of St Christopher’s Anglican Church in Roleystone cooked pancakes on Shrove Tuesday at the Roleystone Shopping Centre, and gave them to the people passing by. The pancakes were free, but any donations given were for the Mundaring Bushfire Appeal, and thanks to the generosity of Roleystone shoppers, we raised $780. It is possible that Coles may match this figure, which would be wonderful to see.

CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “Don’t miss this special performance from one of Australia’s most popular entertainers -- up close in the intimate surrounds of the Kalamunda stage.” “’Simply Sinatra’ has been delighting audiences around the country, so be sure to book early to avoid missing out,” she said. Accompanied by a smaller band of fine musicians, Tom sings over 20 of Sinatra’s greatest hits, and talks with considerable knowledge of some of the highlights of his extraordinary career. From ‘Come Fly with Me’, ‘All the Way’, ‘Lady is a Tramp’ and ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’ to ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, ‘That’s Life’ and ‘New York, New York’ plus many more! Tom’s illustrious career includes acting and singing, to television host and theatrical producer. He first shot to stardom in the ‘80s when he was cast in the title role in the box office hit ‘The Man from
Snowy River’, which became one of the most successful Australian films ever made. This led to a string of starring roles in movies over the next several years. In the ‘90s, Tom revealed that as well as being an immensely talented actor, he also had an amazing singing voice. His first professional singing engagement was as the voice of the young Frank in the Warner Brothers mini-series ‘Sinatra’, produced by Tina Sinatra. 1998 saw the creation of Tom’s hugely successful live musical show ‘Frank – A Life in Song’, which played several times in the Australian state capital cities as well as in Toronto, Canada and Las Vegas, USA. This was followed by the national tour of ‘Now We’re Swingin’!’, another musical show celebrating not only Sinatra, but other stars of vocal swing such as Nat ‘King’ Cole, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr., Bobby Darin and Michael Buble. Tickets cost $40 for adults and $35 concession and are available from the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre or 9257 2558 or performingarts@kalamunda. wa.gov.au; from the Zig Zag Cultural Centre on 9257 2558 or 50 Railway Road, Kalamunda; or online at www.trybooking.com. Calendar Girls Written by Tim Firth Presented by Jally Entertainment Saturday 31 May, 8pm
When Annie’s husband John dies from Leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris set about raising money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four other friends to pose nude with them for a calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, flower arrangements and with the help of an amateur photographer, they complete their project. Based on the true story of 11 Women’s Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history and is now a worldwide comedy hit. Admission*: $42.30 Standard; $38.80 Concession; $35.80 Group (10 or more).

Dance Fit Dance Academy would like to congratulate our scholarship students of 2013, Chloe Brugman and Philipa Cooper. The scholarship is awarded to one junior and one senior student each year, for working hard all year round, and exhibiting their passion for dance in every class. These 2 students have worked incredibly hard, and their dedication and passion for dance means that they will get to dance for a whole year for FREE. Both of them have always put 100% into every dance class they attend, and have set a great example for their peers and classmates, so they are very deserving of their reward.
Congratulations girls! We are very proud of you both, and hope you have a fantastic year of dancing at Dance Fit. Dance Fit offers jazz, tap, ballet, acrobatics, hiphop, babies dance, and boys’ hip-hop and break dancing. We have a new team of teachers on board, who would love for you to come down and try one of our classes. We have a FREE week of dancing from the 7th to the 11th of April, and we will also be taking enrolments for Term 2, which will commence on the 28th of April 2014. Please contact Megan on 0400 093 325 for more information, or find us on Facebook.

roleystone gumnut playgroup
We have had a fantastic start to the new year at Roleystone Gumnut Playgroup. With new members on our committee and new group leaders, we are looking forward to some positive outcomes to improve our Playgroup. I would like to start by thanking all of our members who have helped to sell the Cadbury chocolate eggs for our fundraiser, and a special thank you to the parents for helping sell raffle tickets at the markets. It would not have been successful without your help. We have also had a donation of a wonderful and informative story book called Farmer George’s Busy Morning. Thank you Patricia Brown for your kindness. I’m sure our children will enjoy listening and learning about farming. Our Easter Chocolate Fundraiser has a selection of chocolate eggs and several Easter Hampers being raffled off on the 11th of April. You may have seen this at our stall, run by some of our fantastic members, at the Twilight Markets. If you would like to be in the draw, or would like to buy some easter eggs and support the Roleystone Gumnut Playgroup, you can purchase your tickets and chocolates from our place of play, the Roleystone Family Centre. If you are interested in joining playgroup, come and have a chat with our friendly group leaders between 9:00am and 11:00am on weekdays, about what we offer for your children. You can also contact our President Kerry on 0439 914 011 or kerry.s.davis@ gmail.com, or our Registrar Marie at rpgregistrar@gmail.com. Claire Spry.

particularly grateful that they don’t need to take the children and their pets along to the vet clinic. For cats and dogs, it is recommended to do a multiple vaccination, which covers five diseases in one injection. A thorough health check of the animal is done prior to the vaccination, and this is helpful in maintaining a good level of veterinary care before problems develop. Animals are
much more relaxed having their vaccinations done at home, and it is a good opportunity to ask the vet about particular problems which may be related to the home environment. It is generally much easier to deal with cats at home, rather than having to force them into a cat cage and drive them to the vets. This service is easily arranged by contacting Dr Judith Congrene on 0433 2137 28.
Plaques commemorate old railway line Fifty year ago, on 23 February 1964, the last train made its journey on the railway line that ran between Fremantle and Armadale. The City of Armadale will commemorate this part of its history with the laying of a number of plaques close to where the stations, or ‘sidings’ as they were called, were originally located, along what is now Armadale Road. The original railway line between Jandakot and Armadale was formally opened by the Minister for Works, Mr James Price on 22 July 1907. The railway line transported goods and passengers and played an important part in the development of the Armadate region until the last train ran on the line. While the Fremantle to Jandakot line had been open since April 1906, the final and most important section of 17.3km long linked the Jandakot siding to Armadale. The construction took more than a year to be completed after much public controversy and fiery debate in the State’s Legislative Assembly. City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said the last remnant of the track, a small railway bridge over James Drain, is still visible opposite the new Piara Waters estate. “When driving along Armadale Road in a westerly direction you can clearly see the route of the railway line on the southern side of Armadale Road. “Three commemorative plaques wilt be laid at locations close to the Pine Tree Crossing stopping place, the Forrestdale No 2 Siding and the Westfield Public Siding. “The City will also install plaques at Taylor’s Crossing, near the intersection of Taylor Road, and the other in the vicinity of the railway bridge remnant, when shared paths and road works in the area have been completed,” said Mayor Zelones. If you are interested in discovering the history of the railway line and viewing maps of where the sidings were located, visit the City’s Birtwistle Local Studies Library located in the Armadale Library, Armadale Central Shopping Centre.

As school holidays approach in October, families may be considering spending some time away from home, which may require putting their pets into kennels or catteries for boarding. It is amazing how quickly the year passes, and how easy it is to forget to maintain the vaccination boosters which are required before a pet can be admitted to boarding facilities. Some veterinary clinics also need vaccination certificates to show that patients to be admitted to hospital have been fully vaccinated before they are accepted. Having pets vaccinated at home is an easy process, with minimal disruption to the pet’s normal routine and more convenience for the owner, especially for people who don’t drive, or have numerous pets to have vaccinated. With a busy finale to the season, lots of accolades go to our two State Championship teams, who represented Roleystone over the long weekend and made club history. It is not the first time Roleystone has sent two teams to States competition, but it is the first time that two teams won the title of State Champions in their divisions. Sandy Johnson and her team of U12’s C Division, and Lee Miles and his team of U10’s D Division both achieved victory with five wins out of five. Both teams played convincingly in all games, which gave them all the confidence to take out the titles. Well done and congratulations to all involved in producing this wonderful outcome. Congratulations must also go to Tomas Koval and Joshua Johnson, who represented Roleystone in the TBAWA Super Squad this year. We had our AGM, wind up and presentations on Sunday the 9th of March, with a great turn out of parents and players. Many thanks go to the outgoing committee, who have done a fantastic job over the past year. Since we have quite a few members returning to the new committee next year, in addition to the few new faces joining them, it looks like we will have a great committee to lead the club to future success. We would like to welcome our new committee members, and hope you will enjoy your time with us at the table. Presentations of trophies were made to all team players at the wind up, with a special mention going to some outstanding achievers, including: PICTURED: Perpetual Trophy Award – Cassie Dempsey, Club Person for 2013/14 – Michelle London and Rip tide slip n slide.

If we did not have volunteers like yourselves, we would not have this
wonderful club to thank you for. Also a special thanks to all our sponsors this year; without your support, we couldn’t get the things the kids need to play the game, so thank you very much! Enjoy the off season, and we look forward to seeing you all out on the diamond when tee-ball resumes in October. Wendy Mays Publicity Officer.

Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 NEWS RELEASE OUT OF CONTROL GATHERING CHARGES Investigations by Kensington Detectives into a disturbance on Saturday 8 March 2014, has led to additional people being charged. It is alleged at around 8.50pm, police attended at an address on Longhurst Way in Queens Park in response to reports that around 200 people were at a party and a number were fighting with knives at the front of the house. Upon police arrival, those fighting evaded police by running to the rear of the property. The party, which was being held for a girl’s 15th birthday, was declared an Out of Control Gathering and the party-goers were advised to leave the house. Police withdrew down the street as bottles were thrown at them. Numerous vehicles parked in the street
had their windows smashed, with a large amount of glass being left on the roadway. Significant police resources were deployed to this incident. A number of Move-On notices were issued, and a 19 year old male of Kelmscott was summonsed for Disorderly Conduct on the night. On Thursday, 14 March 2014 detectives charged a 33 year old Queens Park woman with Responsible Adult of a Child who Organised a Gathering that became an Out-of-Control Gathering and she will appear in court at a date to be advised. With almost 170 players registered this year, the Roleystone Netball Club is looking forward to the start of the club’s 38th year, with games commencing on Saturday the 3rd of May, at the Ray Owen Sports Centre in Lesmurdie. The committee has been hard at work already. A special thank you to our Property Officer, Michelle Armstrong, who has done an amazing job of finding a supplier for our new coaches bags, balls and other equipment. Also a very special thank you goes to our club registrar, Sharlene Warnes, for the long hours and hard work she put in last year and this year. Not only did she have the lengthy task of placing the girls into appropriate teams, with the assistance of our Coaches Co-ordinator, Diane Bunten, but she put in endless hours off season to get the club computerised. On top of that, she got the club’s website up and running. We thanked Sharlene at our last committee meeting and gave her a special gift (see photograph). Awesome job Sharlene! Once the teams are finalised, training should start by the 24th of March. Coaches will be in contact with their players soon. A special mention to all the older girls who have taken on the leadership role of coaching some of the younger teams. You are a credit to yourselves and your club! A special thank you also goes to our continued sponsorship from

The Kindergarten students at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott love the opportunity to get their hands wet and dirty as they explore the wonders of the natural world. Under the guidance of their teacher Mrs Michelle Christian, the students are learning about nature and their own place in the world, through a variety of practical and exciting activities. The students are taking great care of the class pet, an axolotl (Mexican salamander) called Bruce! In addition to sharing the responsibility of caring for Bruce, the students are eagerly monitoring the progress of a pond full of tadpoles. The wellwatched tadpoles are in the process of developing their legs and gradually taking the form of frogs. Each week, the class enjoys a science lesson with the school’s science specialist teacher Mrs
Kristy Maher. In science, the class has been learning about the life cycle of frogs, and are now masters at drawing frogs in every stage of development. The class is keenly awaiting the arrival of some six legged friends, with plans being made to set up an ant farm. The garden area is blooming beautifully, with hanging baskets full of flowers and tomatoes. Each child has their own seed pot, for
which they are responsible. They are taking the task of ensuring the pots get daily water and sunshine very seriously. The arrival of the cooler weather is sure to see a fabulous display of loved and cherished plants thriving in the Kindy class.

On Friday the 14th of February, the Year Six class from Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott attended their Leadership Retreat Day, held at Lumen Christi College. During the day, the students learnt about servant leadership, a model where leadership is exhibited by helping others and shown through example. The class was split into four leadership groups, to perform different jobs around the school. The four groups were the Music, Liturgy, and Hospitality team, the Environment team, the Sports and Specials Events team, and the Library and Fellowship team. The class worked together to create a Leadership Pledge that will form the foundation for their roles as leaders in the school this year. By Ella, Gabby, Tara and Jessica.
Leadership Pledge 2014 As a Year Six leadership group, we will lead and show respect to the school community through showing faith, love and laughter. We aim to show service in our leadership, and to teach others the value of respect. We promise to be loyal to our classmates and school community. We promise to learn through God in whatever we do, and we will show others how to do the same. We also promise to share with others, and to use the responsibility that we have been given wisely. We aim to do our best at all times, and to be positive ambassadors for the Good Shepherd Catholic School Community.

It was with great excitement that the Year Six students at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott recently received their Graduation Shirts. The students are wearing their new shirts with pride and a sense of responsibility. The motto of the school for this year is “Responsibility for own learning and actions”. The Graduating Class of 2014 is to be congratulated for having made a promising start to the school year, and for their mature modelling of responsibility to the younger students at the school.
A LOAD OF OLD RUBBISH
The latest exhibition at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda “Are We There Yet?” has been described as a load of old rubbish! But South West artist Chris Williamson doesn’t mind one bit -- because his artworks have been creatively constructed from other people’s cast offs. Influenced by 1960s British Pop and Italian Arte Povera, Chris Williamson has given the term ‘compulsive hoarder’ a new meaning. Using old newspapers from Russia, a 19th century grocer’s wrapping paper, old toy train sets, bus tickets and bits of wallpaper, Chris has skilfully combined these disparate objects into engaging paintings and small-scale sculptures. These intriguing works make up Chris’ new solo exhibition, opening at the Gallery on Friday 14 March 2014 at 6:00pm. CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “’Are We There Yet’ is a fine example of creative re-cycling and will fascinate both young and old alike. There is something for everyone in Chris’ work, which is an inspiring example of recycling and making the old ‘new again’.” “With stories of childhood, a whiff of nostalgia and one or two controversial statements, this is a show which invites us to reflect on the experiences of those whose daily remnants have been given a second life.” While making final preparations for the show Chris said, “This work is influenced by history, inspired by the texture of really old objects and offers people a tangible connection with the past”. The Exhibition runs until Sunday 6 April 2014. The Zig Zag Gallery is located at 50 Railway Road, Kalamunda. LIVELIGHTER ARALUEN’S FREMANTLE CHILLI FESTIVAL 2014
At the end of the day it’s ‘just a herb’, but there is something mystical about the humble chilli that has captured the world’s imagination since the dawn of human history. This fascination was on show with the annual LiveLighter Araluen Chilli Festival, supported by the City of Fremantle, attracting near-record crowds to the port city’s Esplanade Reserve. The crowds also spilled out into the streets of Fremantle, bringing a healthy boost to local businesses. Australia’s largest and most successful chilli festival and arguably the world’s most popular hot food festival, saw around 100 stalls full of everything from chilli plants, condiments, sweets, foods, beverages and more, as well as roving entertainment and cooking demonstrations by local celebrity chefs. Rod Ross, General Manager of event organiser Araluen Botanical Park Foundation, said that since its introduction in the summer of 2003, Araluen’s Chilli Festival has firmly established itself as one of WA’s premier cultural events. “The Araluen Botanic Park Foundation relies on this event as an important fundraising and promotional opportunity to assist its not-for-profit cause at Araluen Botanic Park. At the same time we seek to benefit the Fremantle community. One of the initiatives we employ is to offer all-day pass outs so that visitors can also explore all that the port city offers,” Mr Opening Hours: Mon - Fri: 7:00am - 6:00pm Ross said. Sat: 7:00am - 2:00pm “We are delighted to acknowledge and thank our naming rights partner, Healthway, Roleystone Auto Centre proudly supports local businesses promoting the LiveLighter message. For the health and comfort of others both this event and Araluen Botanic Park are smoke free venues.” “It’s been an ongoing success since the first one was held over ten years ago, but the move to Fremantle in 2011 has given the festival the chance to grow even more and it now attracts thousands of visitors from all over WA - this year was no exception,” he added. With the near-record crowds not only at the event, but venturing though the city’s streets, Fremantle Chamber of Commerce CEO, Tim Milsom, said the event was a big boost to the local economy. “These types of events provide a much needed boost for traders and anecdotally, many local businesses have told me that they did a roaring trade over the weekend,” Mr Milsom said. “The Fremantle Business Improvement District’s (BID) automated people counters showed significant spikes in foot traffic compared to an average weekend. The overall 23% increase in pedestrians averaged out over various locations proves that ticketed events do contribute positively to Fremantle’s local economy.” One business that felt the positive effect was local bar and restaurant, Benny’s, • Thousands of weekly specials with the venue’s owner, Ivan Dzeba, saying the chilli extravaganza brought • Locked down low prices a noticeable increase in pedestrians throughout Fremantle, including South Terrace. “It was a great couple of days and there was definitely an increase in • Freshness guarantee the amount of people in and around Freo. It was an event for the whole family Favourite brands and local seasonal produce which contributed to a great family-friendly vibe through the day and into the night,” Mr Dzeba said. Family owned and run since 1984 “People in Freo are often uncertain as to the knock-on effect of ticketed festivals and events to our local economy, but there is no doubting the positive OPEN 7 DAYS effects of this one.” Other businesses were also buoyed by the weekend’s trading, with the local Monday to Saturday 8am - 7pm grapevine in overdrive. There were reports of many businesses having bumper weekends, some the best they’d had in many years. Thursday 8am - 8pm The event was not without a few hiccups though, with some traffic management Sunday 8.30am - 7pm issues, particularly on the Friday before the event. “An event of this scale is never without a few things going wrong and Public Holidays 8.30am - 6pm Friday’s traffic snarl near the Esplanade as we set up was one of these. As event organisers we take responsibility and I apologise wholeheartedly to Go to iga.com.au for more information commuters and residents for the inconvenience and distress it caused,” Mr Ross said. “We’ve certainly learned a few things from this year that have already been 21 Jarrah Road Roleystone adjusted for next year’s event. One of these is the traffic management plan, which we’ve worked through with the City of Fremantle for next year. I’d like Phone: 9397 5549 to thank the City for their assistance in quickly resolving Friday’s problem and for their involvement in formulating next year’s plan. I’m very confident the 2015 event will be just as big a success as this year, minus the traffic How the Roleystone locals like it issues.” Like to learn more? JD Structural Integration Perth is a manual therapy clinic in Mount Nasura, run by Dr Kathy Menon and Josh Nunn (who also has a clinic in Mount Lawley). Kathy discovered the power of structural bodywork back in 2007, after being sidelined with severe sports injuries. Conventional therapies had not helped, and she could not keep up with the demands of life as a mother of two children, as well as work. Surgery was her last option. After just one structural session from a retired therapist in Perth, she was inspired into a new career, resulting in five trips to the US, and two and a half years of training. In America, she met Josh, an injury-riddled competitive rower and triathlete with a similar story. Already a successful massage therapist, he advanced his training into Structural Integration, and then Physical Therapy in New York City. He subsequently moved to Perth, where he and Kathy are now two of only four KMI structural integrators in WA. With a combined fifteen years experience in bodywork, yoga, personal training, and martial arts, Kathy and Josh practice Structural Integration, which combines strong hands-on manual therapy, with posture and awareness cues to change the way that clients interact with their body. The aim of SI is to release, realign, and rebalance the body through the manipulation of fascia; the dense connective tissue which envelopes the joints, bones, muscles, and organs. Structural Integration can be very effective in relieving chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, anxiety disorders, and it also greatly enhances mobility, injury recovery and performance. Structural Integration may be the missing solution for those suffering from pain which isn’t improving with traditional methods. If you would like to see if SI can help you, book a session with either Kathy or Josh on 0403 840 502, or visit their website at www.structuralintegrationperth.com.au.

College Expo Evening & Bookfair Wednesday 9 April, 5.30pm – 7.30pm
This year the College is introducing on this day, the theme “Giving back to the Community.” This particular school day will also incorporate a “Free Dress Day” which is to be accompanied by a Gold Coin Donation for those students wishing to participate. The Funds raised will be donated to and assist the establishment of the Roleystone Youth Shed, which is to be led by Community Youth Workers, Joyce Arnott and Stuart Hight. The Youth Shed initiative evolved from the 2010 Bendigo Bank Big Ideas Forum held at the Roleystone Hall and is endorsed by the Roleystone Community Alive Group. In addition, Mr Thatcher will be riding a ‘Spin Bike’ from the College’s Gym for the entire 2 hour period in the evening, hoping to generate more small donations on the night. Assistance in this area will be the College’s student leaders. This ‘action station’ will be set near the Library so any remaining ‘loose change’ after families have been to the wonderful Bookfair will be greatly appreciated! There will also be the opportunity for students, mums and dads to hop on one of the other exercise machines positioned there and ‘ride 5 minutes for a good cause’ and make a donation. Riders will have their photo / name taken and will be published in the following term 2 Newsletter and website.Members form the Youth Shed will also be on hand to answer any questions and showcase their ideas. Your anticipated support of such a worthy community initiative is very much appreciated.
Recycling at Roleystone Community College Mrs Cotter in Room 2.5 of Block 2 is the dropoff point for some of your recycling needs. We take ring pulls, mobile phones, accessories, and many different kinds of batteries. If you have any of these items, then please drop them off at our room after 8:30am or 3:00 pm. The College also recycles our paper, cardboard, printer and ink cartridges. The local newsagency will take your printer and ink cartridges but, at a pinch, I can take them at the College. HCA have built a strategic partnership with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) and Armadale City Council to develop infrastructure in the Forrestdale Business Park. A high level of support has been received from both government authorities in relation to HCA’s investment into the region. The news of HCA’s move into the area is also gaining much attention within the local community with economic benefits likely due to increased investment by other industry over the next few years. “We are the first company to commit to this Business Park, which will encourage more industry into this growing industrial area of Armadale,” said Mr Harvey. Construction is expected to commence in April 2014 with the project scheduled for completion in June 2015.

The Greenfield project in Armadale, is HCA’s (Hitachi Construction Machinery - Australia Pty Ltd) most significant investment in key infrastructure to-date, and follows a number of other key investments enabling further national expansion. HCA officially purchased land in June 2013 at Forrestdale West Business Park, making it the first land owners in this new greenfield site. Strategically located adjacent to Tonkin Hwy, the facility is conveniently accessible to surrounding major industrial areas, including Perth Airport, Fremantle Port and Kwinana. This land covers an area of approximately 100,000m2 with an estimated total project expenditure of $100 million once completed. Managing Director of HCA, David Harvey, said the new facility will further expand the company’s support capabilities. “The new facility to be built is a strategic investment in our company’s future, and aims to strengthen our ability to deliver the highest level of support to our customers in the Western Australian market as well as further afield,” he said. The facility will feature a series of specialised buildings incorporating the latest in innovative and environmentally-conscious technologies, similar to those adopted within HCA’s recently constructed Brisbane CSG facility

The first Roleystone Market for 2014 was a market with music, and and it was hot! Literally. The weather provided the heat for the first few hours and the amazing musicians from the Roleystone Musicians Club turned up the heat when the sun went down. The new location of Cross Park afforded the Market Committee the opportunity to increase the number of stalls from 38 to an amazing 90 stalls. The venue and number of stalls might have changed, but the quality and variety have been consistent. Feedback received from visitors and stall holders is that this is what makes the Roleystone Markets so special. The heat from one of the hottest days of the summer understandably kept some visitors away, but once the sun started to drop behind the trees, the Park was suddenly buzzing with people. There were some early stalwarts who braved the heat and enjoyed the opportunity to linger and chat to the stall holders. The kids were well occupied with the perennial favourites of the Bouncy Castle, face painting, and a new visitor to the market, the Bubble Bean train, which wove its way around the Park, bell ringing and kids and parents waving and having fun. Later in the afternoon the Roleystone Musicians Club started setting up, and the area between the stalls and the stage was carpeted with blankets and people enjoying the cooler weather. A slight glitch with the sound system meant that the Concert went beyond its 8:00pm close, which did pose some logistical problems for the Market, as stall holders were keen to leave after a long day in the sun. Thanks to the RMC Kids, Blue Mana, The Redeemers, Hawkstone, Acertijo Latino, Dave & Evie, Lucky & Johnny, and Jacqueline Anne for providing such a wide range of music to please everyone. Overall, despite the heat, 2014’s first market was another great success which demonstrated what our fabulous community can do. Both the market and the musicians will be back for the first market in 2015, but we look forward to seeing what the Roleystone Markets will bring us for the remaining three markets in 2014.

Mount Richon resident finds hilarity of Holmes send-up more than elementary Mount Richon resident Simon James is directing a barking mad comedy version of the Sherlock Holmes classic “The Hound of the Baskervilles” this autumn. Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, ARENAarts is bringing the show to life at the Latvian Centre in Belmont, with three women playing fifteen different roles. The play tells the story Sir Charles Baskerville’s murder, and the intrigues that surround the arrival of the manor’s new lord, Sir Henry. As Sherlock Holmes and offsider Dr Watson dig deeper into the crime, they discover all manner of strange characters, each with a motive and secret. “Whereas the original story was a serious piece of literature, the stage adaptation certainly is not,” James said. “It gets a gloriously funny and rather silly makeover, packed full of verbal humour, visual buffoonery, fast-paced changes and absolute lunacy. Whether audiences know much about Sherlock Holmes or not, they’ll certainly get more than a laugh or two out of how we present this classic story. Some Sherlock Holmes fans may frown at the thought of a comedy version of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, but we’re not ridiculing the characters nor the story – we’re just having a lot of fun in the way the characters and story are presented. It’s a very affectionate spoof of the world’s greatest fictional detective.” In terms of challenges, the original script had next to nothing in explanations of how to stage the production, meaning that James had to come up with many physical comedy ideas himself. “By doing so, we’ve kept the flavour of the piece, which sends up so many theatre techniques and conventions,” he said. “There was nothing about how the quick costume and scene changes could or should be done, so it was a matter of coming up with a lot of logistical things, to make each scene work and flow seamlessly from one to the next.” Currently artistic director of ARENAarts, where he has a 25-year association, James has written and directed more than 50 plays, and has worked with the Old Mill, Stirling, Hayman and Pocket Theatres, Canning Players, Theatre-go-round, Curtain Up Drama Group, and Constable Care over the past 30 years, while also appearing in numerous theatre-in-education productions.
Among his acting credits are “She Stoops To Conquer”, “The Bewitched”, “The Recycling Rabbit”, “A Christmas Carol”, “It’s A Mad World My Masters”, and “Northanger Abbey”. His directing credits include “Antigone”, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”, “Doctor Who: Hellblossom”, “Jake’s Women”, “We Happy Few”, “The Miracle Worker”, “All The King’s Women” and several Terry Pratchett plays. James has been named Best Director at Dramafest twice, for “The Bear” and “When Elvis Met Nixon”, and has been recognised for Best Set Design at the 2012 Finley Awards for “The Miracle Worker”, and the 2013 Hills Festival of Theatre for “The Bald Prima Donna”. As a storyteller, he also has 21 years worth of experience performing “The Storykeeper” during Children’s Book Week, as well as Clay Tales; storytelling and pottery workshops for people with disabilities. “The Hound of the Baskervilles appealed to me, because it was a hilarious play to read with its mix of verbal and physical humour, and the potential to break down some theatre conventions and make fun of them,” James said. “The actors break out of character to address the audience, the stage manager wanders about setting up scenes oblivious to what’s going on, costumes are clothes thrown over the top of other clothes, props appear from nowhere and sound effects pop in and out at will. As a fan of Sherlock Holmes mysteries, it was great to take something I like and give it a comic outing. It’s part Monty Python in presentation, part The Goon Show and part Benny Hill – but all entertainment.” The Hound of the Baskervilles will play at 8:00pm on March 21st, 22nd, 28th, 29th, April 3rd, 4th and 5th, with 2:00pm matinees on March 23rd and 30th. Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for concession, or $15 per person for groups of 10 or more. To book, call 9497 5140, or email arenaarts@ hotmail.com.au. The Latvian Centre is located at 60 Cleaver Terrace, in Belmont (off Belmont Avenue). testimoniAl Dear Maggie, Patrick, Jo and Linda, Thank you so much for your support, very helpful and friendly advice, and for selling our house! Quite a number of people say to us “How did you manage to get more than your asking price?” and we tell them “Because we had the best Real Estate Agent on the job - Maggie and her Team!” We highly recommend Maggie Burke Real Estate to anyone looking to buy or sell their home. Through all the stress and difficulty of selling and buying, we could always rely on warm and professional assistance, which is their hallmark. The level of thought and effort and the close attention to detail that Maggie put into selling our house was astounding! We have never experienced such consideration from any other agent in the past.

This is our second experience dealing with Maggie, over the space of 4 years, and one thing we have noticed is that she is consistent. The warmth with which we were treated on both occasions is not a business façade: seeing Maggie about in the neighbourhood she will ask how the house is going or what the kids are up to, etc. Maggie is so much more than an agent. She is a friend who can always be relied upon to give honest advice, and is just so darn good at doing what she loves best, finding people a place that they can call “Home”! God bless you, Tim and Jacenta Haydon Mackie Road, Roleystone
