It has been a year since the tragic death of Ryan Birch, a death which spurred his family members, Russ, Ruban and Lu Lu, to compete in the 2013 Dunsborough X Adventure Race, in his memory. On Sunday the 23rd of March 2014, Ryan’s family members Russ, Ruban and Adelle once again entered the X Adventure Race. Ruban took the first leg of the 1.5km ocean swim, struggling against 2 metre high swells, high winds, and plenty of cloud cover. Despite the unfavorable conditions, he managed to make great time (29 minutes and 28 seconds), and gave his sister Adelle a good start for her 12km run. Adelle ran over the rocky beach, into the ocean, back to the beach, and up and down the hills. Unfortunately she took a hard fall in the 4kms, but managed to get past the pain and finished strong, giving Russ a good start to ride his 22km mountain bike ride. Russ took over a few people on the upward stretch, racing through to the finish line in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 33 seconds. The Birch family came in 12th place, in a field of 49. It was a tight race, with the winning team finishing in 2 hours and 56 minutes, and the Birch gang finishing at 3 hours and 31 minutes. Once again, the Birch family gave everyone a run for their money! The Roleystone Girl Guide unit is looking for an amazing lady to help nurture, guide, and lead this group of charismatic young ladies. Girl Guides is an organisation that helps build confidence, skills and independence in girls and young women. It is fantastic that we have a Girl Guide unit here in Roleystone, but one leader is not enough to keep a unit going. If you would be interested in volunteering, or know of anyone who would be interested in volunteering, we would love to have you on board. The Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Reforestation Project involves the restoration of a 38 hectare site of black cockatoo habitat within Banyowla Conservation Park in the Perth foothills. The project will focus on native plant species known to be important to the feeding, breeding and roosting cycles of the three endangered/threatened black cockatoo species unique to the southwest corner of WA. By reforesting an old orchard and grazing property in Banyowla Regional Park the project also enhances local flora and fauna, and forms an important carbon sink. Area for Reforestation Carbon Neutral will reforest and revegetate cleared areas of highly degraded land with the Banyowla Conservation Park with a mix of native species that match the surrounding bushland. A priority will be placed on native plants and trees such as banksias, dryandra, hakea, grevillea, eycalyptus species (including sheoak, marri, jarrah and wandoo) that provide a long-term food source for black cockatoos. Volunteer Opportunities Only 40 minutes drive from Perth CBD, in an area of natural beauty with sweeping

views over the swan coast plain, this planting project offers excellent corporate volunteer opportunities. Groups will have a hands on experience getting involved with planting of revegetation areas in the winter of 2014 and will learn first-hand about the importance of biodiversity in Western Australia, Volunteers will receive a tour of the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre situated adjacent to the planting area and learn how they will be directly assisting with conservation efforts to help black cockatoos. “The importance of restoring biodiversity cannot be underestimated - through the revegetation of degraded areas in Banyowla Conservation Park we are able to provide much needed feeding, roosting and nesting habitat which is critical for ensuring the survival of the black cockatoos that aggregate on our coastal plain.” Sonya Creese, Environmental Projects Manager, Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre. City of Gosnells Mayor Dave Griffiths said the Awesome Antics program was always popular in the holidays. “This year we have some great workshops including video game making and a photography workshop explaining how to get the most out of your smartphone camera,” said the Mayor. The photography workshop, held by professional photographer Luke Thompson, will incorporate an outing based workshop which will give participants tips on how to improve their photography with whatever camera they’re using. They will then be taught how to edit the photos with software and share them on to social media platforms. The Awesome Antics School Holiday Program provides leisure activities for 20 young people a day, with five places reserved for people with a disability. The program is restricted to young people who live or go to school in the City of Gosnells. Kids get Nearer to Nature in the Perth hills Autumn is a great time for kids to explore the environment and the Perth Hills Discovery Centre in Mundaring has some exciting activities planned for the school holidays. As part of the successful Nearer to Nature program run by the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Perth Hills Discovery Centre is hosting two sessions each day of the holidays. There are heaps of activities to choose from, including Cocky Capers on Monday 14 April from 10.00am - 11.30am, which suits children aged four to seven years. Kids can meet cockatoos up close, discover the types of places they call home, what they eat and why they have such unique features. On Tuesday 15 April from 10.00am 3.00pm, trek through the bush and learn some awesome survival tips including traditional and modern navigation techniques, methods to collect water, firemaking skills and how to signal for help in an emergency as part of the Bush Survival activity for eight to 12-year-olds. Sore throats are a common complication of the common cold. Use of aspirin gargles, antiinflammatory lozenges and iodine gargles can relieve symptoms rapidly. Again, check with your pharmacist if such medications are appropriate for you. Prevention is always better than a cure. Resting and avoiding close contact with others, as well as covering mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing, reduces spread of infection through the community. There are many natural remedies available which help to boost our immune system (natural defenses), so that we are less likely to succumb to cold symptoms. Included amongst the products are the herbs Echinacea, angiographis, garlic, as well as vitamin C and zinc. news, and happily it meant that Ruby could chase her ball – her most important focus in her daily life. Over the next few months, there were some setbacks and at all times, my work with Ruby included ongoing discussions with her family as to how far we could help her to improve her quality of life. This is very difficult to determine when such a bright little bundle of kelpie seems so determined to just keep going. Shona expressed her gratitude for the extra time she was enjoying with Ruby, and the time which also allowed the family to prepare themselves to let her pass when she needed this. A combination of circumstances, including the onset of seizures, resulted in the decision to help Ruby pass to Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace, Ruby. You were a bright shining star patient.

Last year I was asked to visit a very bright and active little kelpie called Ruby. Her Mum Shona asked me if I thought acupuncture could help Ruby, as she had reached the end of the conventional treatment options at the veterinary hospital, unless further diagnostic work up was done with a view to later surgery. Ruby was having a difficult time controlling her legs, due to a loss of control in the nervous system, which sends messages to and from her brain. It was likely that a possible injury to her neck about 2 years earlier was the cause of the symptoms, and the long term nature of the condition meant a poor prognosis for getting Ruby back to a normal gait. I videoed her most unusual gait, and thought how amazing it was that she was able to get around at all, yet her attitude and spirits were bright and enthusiastic. Keeping Ruby still for her acupuncture was a bit of a challenge, but with repeated treatments, this clever little dog worked out that she felt better after this strange process, and was more co-operative. One day she even presented her back to me, as if she was saying “I’m ready” for her needles. Smoker’s Ceramics Exhibition a Highlight for Gallery An exhibition of ceramics and pastel drawings by Joel Smoker reflecting the colours, textures and scale of the Australian landscape was officially opened in the Zig Zag Gallery at 6:00pm on Saturday 12 April. Joel is a renowned Australian artist, ceramicist, photographer and musician. His contributions as a country music song writer, performer and visual artist is well recognised in Western Australia. Joel works in many mediums and has exhibited throughout Australia since 1978. His upcoming exhibition presents a diverse collection of colourful and textualised works inspired by the Kimberley region of Western Australia, the outback, where he was born and raised. As a ceramicist Joel has produced slab vases, platters and bowls, as well as special interest tiles and murals. His pieces are exhibited in solo

and group shows and are part of private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Joel has received a number of awards for his creative endeavours including the Fremantle Arts Centre Invitation Ceramics Award, Winner of the WAM Song Contest: Country Category and becoming a Fellow of the Crafts Council of WA. MOSQUITOES: BIOLOGICAL CONTROLS

Research shows that natural predators for mosquito larvae in our waterways and wetlands are an effective way to manage their numbers. The problem we currently face in many locations is that very poor water quality plus chemicals have severely reduced many natural predators and allowed the mosquito numbers to reach unacceptable levels. There is a large amount of scientific investigation and trials being undertaken throughout the world to address biological applications as a component of an integrated approach to mosquito control. Some of our native fish eat mosquito larvae, but native fish are on the rapid decline due to poor water quality and degradation of waterways and wetlands. The introduced fish – Gambusia – doesn’t eat mosquito larvae but instead eats native macro invertebrates, fish eggs and some small native fish. Some frogs play a vital role, but like our native fish, they too are under pressure. One of the success stories in biological control is copepods, a group of very tiny crustaceans

found in the sea and most freshwater habitats. They are typically only 1 to 2 millimetres with a teardrop shaped body and large antennae. While they generally tend to feed on a mixed algal diet, they also eat mosquito larvae. Copepods are very easily grown and therefore can be economically used in many areas to reduce mosquito numbers. Copepods have been effective in waterways in New Jersey and Louisiana USA, successfully trialled in north Queensland and currently trialling in South Australian waterways. In North Vietnam, where the use of chemicals has been prohibited since the war, rice growers place copepods in streams next to the rice fields, which have proven to be very successful in their fight against Dengue fever. SERCUL believe that, given the simplicity of growing copepods, they are worth trialling in WA, and is looking for partners to undertake a project to prove they are suitable to use in an integrated approach to mosquito control in this State. The Year Six students at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott have just returned from the school’s annual Year Six Camp. The four-day camp started bright and early with a train ride to Fremantle, where students divided into two teams and participated in a treasure hunt around some interesting sites in the port city. These sites included the Roundhouse, Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison and the Shipwreck Galleries. There was great excitement as the students examined the Welcome Walls in search of the illusive Robert Doyle,

learning that he travelled to Fremantle on a ship called the Himalaya. It was a weary group of campers that arrived at the very picturesque Point Walter campsite in the afternoon. Their tired walking legs were soon revived with a swim in the camp’s beautiful pool. The students revelled in three days of exciting activities such as paddling in canoes, testing their archery skills, zooming down the flying fox, reaching great heights in crate climbing and orienteering. The camp gave students a fabulous opportunity to challenge themselves and grow

as individuals through working together and supporting each other as a team. The Year Six class teacher Mr Chris Burns was exceptionally proud of the student’s fine behaviour and commended them on their willingness to embrace all the exciting opportunities that the camp had to offer.

On Tuesday 25 March, the Year 1 and 2 students from Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott got the opportunity to participate in a unique program developed by SciTech, called ‘Get A Grip’. The Science Roadshow gave students the opportunity to play, explore and discover together. There were many volunteers to join the fun as the children were kept entertained

with a lively mix of interactions and amazing demonstrations. This fantastic incursion encouraged students to hold on tight as they learned and discovered about friction by completing numerous hands-on activities. All students had a wonderful day, which concluded with an exciting demonstration that included sounds, sparks and many gasps from the audience!

THE ROCK & WATER PROGRAM The Year 5 students at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott have had the opportunity to work with the Principal, Mr David Tunchon, on a wonderful program called ‘Rock and Water’. This highly engaging program aims to enhance the social, emotional and spiritual development of boys and girls. Budget The City of Armadale has started its budget workshops and planning earlier this year. So far the main areas to be looked at are the Technical and Community directorates these hold most of the interest to residents because they are in charge of many of the obvious aspects of the Local Government such as the parks, footpaths, roads and community buildings for Technical and the coordinating services for art, tourism, events, libraries, rangers, volunteers, families, youth, seniors and more for Community directorate. So far some possible highlights for the next years budget include ongoing upgrades to the Jull Street mall - the lighting and paving needed upgrading, but the vision is for more finishing touches than just the “nuts & bolts” with preliminary reports suggesting some artwork (still in design phase). The Kelmscott CBD is still on the budget for landscaping and entry statements and there may be other landscaping works funded for other main highways and roads of the City of Armadale in an effort to continue to improve amenity. These are unfortunately more expensive than one would expect due to traffic management costs. There are also proposals to start funding public art projects both the classical statue/structure style and some urban art for underpasses.

Urban Development Institute of Australia Conference

I recently attended the Urban Development Institute of Australia Conference and was very impressed with the lineup of speakers. There was both the immediate past town

planner from New York City and the town planner who designed Singapore and many Chinese cities and further abroad. The common theme from these eminently qualified planners was how towns and cities must be designed - as silly as this sounds - for people - it means for pedestrians not cars and for communities not just individuals - public places where people do what we like best - being together - or at least amongst each other. Another interesting theme related to the densification of Australian cities starting obviously with Sydney and Melbourne they have finally reached the point where people would just rather be in a town house closer to town than the length of a gazillion freeways and highways away in a house. There were also interesting economic talks about the mining boom and of course China our main trading partner the reason for the boom. Some negative talks about the end of the boom and some more moderate so I was not left feeling totally confident the boom was over, slowing down or steadying. There were also some mentions of art, amenity and nature and their value in our towns and community, which was refreshing as many Australian places seem like they’ve been built in such a hurry there was no time for frills, so maybe that’s changing, maybe even in our own City of Armadale. Where am I going to get the minerals that my body needs to repair itself if there aren’t any in my water or my food? Why is it that I can’t lose weight despite lots

Approximately 60 other people enjoyed this very entertaining talk and I am really looking forward to the upcoming talks that the Roleystone Family Centre are hosting focussing on the answers to these questions and many more. The first Basketball Super Camp is on for 2014. My partner and I moved to the hills above Kelmscott in November, and I’m pleased to receive this local magazine. I’ve noticed requests for information on people in our community. Well, this is a bit odd, because I’m writing to “nominate” myself, but my motives are right (I hope!). I’m an elite level ultra distance runner. I have represented Canada and Australia at international events in long distance running (e.g. 80km trail, 24 hour running). I have broken several national records. The primary reason I thought it might be good to get a mention in the magazine is because I really hope to promote healthy living and fitness. I don’t expect anyone to become a “freak” runner like me, but I started with the simple goal of running a few kilometres to burn off the wine and chips. I certainly never thought I’d be any good at it! I also run the Perth Trail Series, which conducts bushrunning events. Some of these are in our local area. So, if there is interest from the magazine’s perspective, I’d love to have the opportunity to try and inspire a few more people to get out the door into nature and run for a bit of fitness and fun. The RMC has a Big Outdoor Stage We just bought a massive 8m x 6m stage this month for outdoor gigs. A stage of this size would normally cost over $1000 to hire for a day - normally out of the reach for a lot of non-profit community and fundraising events. The plan is to make it available for member bands and the local community. It’s a big deal for us, as the Roleystone Musicians Club does not receive any grant money or any other handouts. Following the success of last year’s Skateboard Build, Roleystone Community Youth Workers Stuart Hight and Joyce Arnott together with Roleystone Men’s Community Shed are excited to announce the opening of Roleystone Youth Shed. Starting on Tuesday 29 April from 4pm to 5.30pm at the Roleystone Men’s Community Shed, the Roleystone Youth Shed will give Year 8 – 12 boys and girls the opportunity to participate in engaging activities such as bicycle repairs and reconstruction as well as various artisan projects. Youth workers, men’s shed members and other local artisans will assist the program with their knowledge, expertise and creativity. The cost is only $30 for a year, excluding project costs. If you’re interested in becoming involved with this wonderful local initiative, registration is essential. Armadale Detectives are calling for the public’s assistance with their investigation into an armed robbery in Armadale on Saturday, 15 March 2014. At about 5pm, a 19 year old man was riding an off road trail bike with a friend at the Waterworks located on the corner of Twelfth Avenue and Tonkin Highway. The man noticed two other bikes riding in the area after he became separated from his friend. The two riders chased him, with one of the bikes coming up along side him. The victim felt a blow to the back of his helmet by an unknown object, causing him to fall off his bike and lose consciousness. When he regained consciousness, one of the offenders was trying to start his bike. The victim managed to push the person away and flee on his bike. The first bike was a l25cc 4 stroke black trail bike in bad condition. The male rider is described as being 16 years of age, approximately 165cms tall with dark skin and a solid build, and brown wavy hair with blonde streaks. He was wearing a green motor cross helmet and a red t-shirt, black shorts and white shoes. DESPERATELY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE TO RECTIFY AN INJUSTICE The second bike was a 250cc 4 stroke THAT HAS RESULTED FROM THIS white motor cross trail bike.
