and the concerns may be addressed. We also, as a rule, do not publish unsigned letters. There is one exception: The writer must show an extremely compelling reason for needing to remain anonymous. The written request to have your “name withheld” must accompany the letter. All letters to the editor must contain the writers full name, home address and daytime telephone number so the editor may contact the writer if there is a question or concern. While we try to print as many letters to the editor as possible, writers must be aware that their publication is at the editor’s discretion. Timeliness, space constraints and the amount of letters submitted each month are three of the factors considered.

Magnificent Churchman’s Bushland looking for friends The magnificent Churchman’s Bushland covers an area of approximately 600 hectares and is part of the Darling Range Regional Park. The land has an amazing variety of trees, wildflowers and bird life along with the best natural rockclimbing feature in the metropolitan area. Churchman’s Brook and Canning River run along parts of its boundary, and there are spectacular views through to the coast, down the Canning Valley, and across Roleystone. Churchman’s Bushland has historical significance. Early pioneers of the district once farmed its lower slopes and there is evidence of a private airfield previously used for crop dusting at the top of the bushland. The WA Planning Commission has bought up numerous properties to add to this reserve over the years, particularly on Soldiers Road, and it now links across and into the Crown owned bushland on the Araluen Golf Course that abuts Heritage Drive. In conjunction with WAPC, the Friends of Churchman’s Bushland created a management plan for the area a few years ago. This dedicated group spent many hours creating walks, weeding and keeping watch over the site in partnership with the WAPC. Unfortunately the group was disbanded a few years ago due to ill health, with Freda Dunsmore now the acting custodian. There is a real

need to reform the Friends of Churchman’s Bushland to work in partnership with the Department of Environment, Parks and Wildlife. If there are any interested persons that would like to become involved, whether you are bushwalkers, environmentalists, rock climbers or interested locals, I am more than happy to facilitate the setting up of this group again. From reviewing the management plan and a number of studies to looking after the herbarium and setting up walk trail signs, there will be a role for all interested persons. Please contact me on pathart1@ bigpond.com for more information. Access to this wonderful bushland can be made at the bottom of the reserve towards the end of Stocker Road, or at the top from Beeloo Close that runs off Churchman’s Brook Road. Pat Hart.

The Valley Reporter considers its “Inbox Letters to the Editor” section to be a very important public forum. We make every effort to publish all letters, with those from persons in our readership area taking precedence. However, letters must conform to some guidelines. The Valley Reporter does not publish letters that contain personal attacks or inappropriate, questionable language or content. We strongly encourage writers who do have a personal complaint about a business, individual or organisation to relay their concerns to the source instead of, or at least prior to, voicing them in a letter to the editor. In most cases, it is more appropriate to air those type of issues privately instead of publicly so that the subject may respond

For readers who have tried quitting and remaining a non-smoker, it is never too late to set a date and quit now. Every cigarette you don’t smoke is doing you good. Approximately 19% of Australians smoke, contributing to 12% of all deaths in Australia. On average 7, minutes of life are lost every time you smoke a cigarette, shortening life by 7-13 years. When you smoke, 4000+ chemicals are inhaled into the mouth, throat and lungs, including arsenic, DDT, ammonia, butane, carbon monoxide and cadmium. Nicotine is highly addictive and constricts blood vessels. As a result, there is a reduction in blood flow to lower limbs and the creation of more blood clots. The most common smokingrelated causes of death are heart attack, stroke, and cancer (of the lungs, throat, bladder, pancreas and breast) as well as lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The health benefits of quitting are felt almost immediately. In the first 24 hours, your lungs start to clear out mucous and other smoking debris. After 48 hours,

carbon monoxide is eliminated from the body and your senses of taste and smell are improved. In 3 days, breathing becomes easier, bronchial tubes relax and your energy levels increase. After 12 weeks, circulation improves and, within 3 to 9 months, your lung function increases by up to 10% and respiratory problems such as bronchitis improve. In a year, the risk of heart attack reduces by half verses a continuing smoker, and in 10 years, the risk of lung cancer decreases by half. Finally, in 15 years, the risk of a heart attack becomes similar to a non-smoker (McEwen et al. 2006). It takes will power to quit. Many fear the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine including irritability, anxiety, headaches, dizziness, cravings etc. Yet many give up without the aid of medication or nicotine replacement therapy. To remain a non-smoker, it is important to initially avoid social situations involving alcohol and smoking friends, reduce stress, keep busy and when experiencing the cravings for a cigarette, remember to delay opening the cigarette pack after a few minutes the craving weakens, take a deep breath, drink water and do something else.

Apply now for the Cat Sterilisation subsidy From 1 November 2013 the Cat Act 2011 came into effect. The new State Government legislation requires all cats over six months of age to be sterilised, micro-chipped and registered with their local Council. The City, with funding provided by Round 2 of the Cat Implementation Grant Program 2013-2014, is offering a cat sterilisation subsidy for eligible cat owners that reside in the City of Armadale and meet the following criteria: • The person seeking the subsidy must be a low income earner or pensioner (proof of a Health Care Card or Pension Card is required) and they must pay the full cost of the sterilisation in the first instance. • After the cat is sterilised an application for the subsidy, including proof of sterilisation (on or after 26 August 2013) and residential status must be submitted to the City. • Subsidies are limited to two cats per owner or property. The new cat laws were introduced to promote responsible cat ownership and will allow the City to better manage cats in the community and minimise the nuisance to other residents. We encourage residents to apply quickly as there are only 150 subsidies available to assist eligible cat owners and they must be claimed by 30 June 2014. Owners of a registered cat must ensure that it has a registration tag attached to its collar when in a public place, this will ensure your cat is easily identified. Applications for the sterilisation subsidy scheme are available to download from the City’s website or to collect in person from the Administration Building on 7 Orchard Avenue, Armadale. For more information on the Cat Act 2011 or the cat sterilisation subsidy call Ranger Services on 9399 0111 or visit www.armadale.wa.gov.au.

Round 2 Community Grants Announced Thirteen local groups will continue their great contributions to building a strong sense of community thanks to Community Grants received from the City of Armadale. Grants of up to $1000 have been awarded for projects and initiatives as diverse as the Safe 4 Kids Protective Behaviour Program, Araluen Botanic Park, local playgroups and several sporting clubs. The second round of 2013 - 2014 City of Armadale Community Grants attracted 23 applications from local clubs, community groups and not-for-profit organisations. The funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including costs associated with staging events, workshops and activities, training and small equipment purchases. Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said it was pleasing to see a diverse range of groups being supported with grants. “Champion Lakes Boating Club was successful in receiving a grant of $1000 towards the purchase of equipment to enhance capacity to coach beginner students. “This purchase will assist the club to introduce Kelmscott Senior High School students to rowing, as part of the club’s school program. “Perth Karate Academy, a relatively new club located in the Forrestdale area, will

also benefit from $1000 towards the purchase of a jigsaw mat training floor system for training and competitive use,” said Mayor Zelones. For more information on Community Grants visit www. armadale.wa.gov.au or call the Community Development team on 9399 0642. Community Volunteer Grants $2,000 grants are available to implement a volunteer management plan including reward volunteers in your club. This can include honorarium payment to a volunteer to implement the plan that may include vouchers being distributed to aspiring referees, coaches, committee members, awards or any other incentive and reward ideas you may have. The money can also be used to pay for committee members to up skill, for example the Treasurer could undertake a MYOB training course. By Dr Judith Congrene BSc BVMS CVA the space to hear what our animals are saying. This will help them come to that readiness and let us know it is time. It is not an easy process because deep down we don’t want our beloved pets to leave us – how can we live without them? My strategies for creating that sacred space do not come under the subjects that I learned at veterinary school. They come from my study of alternative healing modalities such as acupuncture, reiki, crystals, shamanic healing, and bringing compassionate connection with the owners and their pets at home. This connection may be developed during palliative care visits to the home to alleviate pain and improve wellbeing, and if the animal has passed, when the owner feels the need for expressing their own grief and assisting their personal healing. On a daily basis, I receive phone calls from owners in distress, trying to make the decision about whether it is time to let their animals pass peacefully to Rainbow Bridge. This is not a simple decision and there are often many variables to consider as far as the quality of life that an animal is experiencing. Many owners tell me in great earnestness that they don’t want their animals to suffer, yet it is difficult to know when it is time to help them pass. Before I can help these much loved pets with my compassionate euthanasia service at home, it is essential for the owner to assess and understand how their pets are feeling. “If only they could talk” is a common statement from the owner who is trying to do their best to understand and make sense of where life is at for their dear pets. There seems to be a lot of pressure to get the timing right. In my experience, we need to create

cholesterol truths Every month or so the Australian media parrot the drug company PR suggesting more people should be taking statins to lower cholesterol. What they say is people with even a low level of heart attack risk should take the drugs which would result in a 10% to 15% reduction in the risk of heart attack. Sounds good doesn’t it. What they did not tell you is that to get that 15% they do a strange type of medical statistics called relative risks. If they use normal statistics it is 0.1% absolute risk reduction or to reduce he risk of one person having a heart attack they had to treat around 1000 people with a drug that has serious side effects. That is why the studies are to tens or even hundreds of thousands of people. If the drug worked well, say 10% they would

only need to treat 100 or 200 people to get results. Here is how they do it. On the statin treatment group 7 people out of 1000 have a heart attack over the period of 5 or more years. In the other control group (no drug) 8 people out of 1000 have a heart attack. Using relative statistics we compare 7 to 8 and there is close to a 15 percent reduction. A bit confusing isn’t it. Using absolute statistics which is what we are all used to, it is a 0.1% reduction from 8 to 7 of 1000 people. So we had to treat around 1000 people to get a 0.1% real reduction. That is a lot of drug for no real benefit not to mention it does not lower the overall death rate. By the way a handful of almonds does much better and has no side effects. Ref: www.drdingle.com. Former Roleystone Theatre performer delivers Noel Coward satire of social snobbery Originally studying Drama, Dance and Music at John Curtin College of the Arts, Harris has gone on to perform with Limelight, Roleystone, Stirling and Melville Theatres, Prompt Corner, and the MS Society, in a variety of productions over the past decade. In 2012, she received a Best Female (other than a lead) nomination at the annual Finley Awards for her role in the musical “Jack The Ripper” at the Koorliny Arts Centre. With “Relative Values”, Harris said that the main challenge is managing all elements of the production on such a large scale. “Tying in with that, I also need to make sure everything is ready when it needs to be,” she said. “But I feel confident with the support I’ve been given by everyone around me. When it came to auditioning, finding the right number and quality of available male actors was challenging, but I’m glad to say it all fell into place for this production.” “Relative Values” will play at 8:00pm on July 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 25th and 26th, with a 2:00pm matinee on July 20th. Tickets are $20 per person ($15 concession). To book, call 9330 4565, or go to www.meltheco.org.au. Melville Theatre is on the corner of Stock Road and Canning Highway, Palmyra.

SBDC launches new small business workshops With strong indications online competition will continue to challenge “bricks-and-mortar” retailers well into the future, the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) is launching two new workshops to equip small business owners with the know how to maximise online business opportunities. Small Business Commissioner David Eaton says while consumers don’t always buy online, they do use the internet to Small Business research products and services and compare suppliers. Development Corporation “Too often we hear small business operators say their business doesn’t need an online presence but if you don’t have one, you’re going to miss out on valuable customers,” Mr Eaton said. “An effective website can be the most important marketing tool your business can have.” The new workshops, “Website Basics” and “Online Marketing – doing it yourself” are offered monthly and cost only $40 per session. “Website Basics” is a practical workshop that explains the basic concepts needed to design and build a website, or to contract a professional website developer. The “Online Marketing – doing it yourself” workshop shows how to create a tailored online marketing strategy using the tools, templates and information included in the workbook provided to all participants. These workshops provide easy-to-follow steps and show small business owners how to become masters of their own websites. Workshop participants are not required to bring a laptop or tablet to the workshops. “Website Basics” and “Online Marketing – doing it yourself” are held monthly at the SBDC, Level 2, 140 William Street, Perth. For more information, visit: www.smallbusiness.wa.gov.au or call the SBDC on 13 12 49 (bookings are essential).

Pictured former Roleystone Theatre performer Tarryn Harris (née Bullock) right, is exploring social snobbery in all its guises as she directs a Noel Coward comedy at Melville Theatre this July. “Relative Values” is a comedy about the old views of British society clashing with contemporary attitudes of American culture. When the Earl of Marshwood chooses a Hollywood actress as his bride, her arrival at Marshwood Manor sends everyone into a tailspin, given that she lives her life off-screen as though she is still in front of the camera. Coward is famous for a wealth of plays including “Hay Fever”, “Private Lives”, “Design For Living”, “Present Laughter” and “Blithe Spirit”. “Relative Values” was first performed in 1951, and adapted into a 2000 film featuring Julie Andrews, Colin Firth and William Baldwin. Harris says she has always loved Coward’s humour. “After directing his one-act play ‘Hands Across The Sea’ last year, I wanted to tackle one of his full-length plays,” she said. “‘Relative Values’ is one of the less wellknown Coward plays, written decades after his most famous ones, which makes it a bit more refreshing in setting and character. I love the interactions between the characters and the individuality of each personality.”

Bringing Quality to Perth

As you know, since 22 August 2012, Airservices has been trialling a change to a flight path that is designed to reduce aircraft noise for some suburbs to the south-east of the city. During the trial, the flight path for aircraft arriving from the north to land at the southern end of the runway has moved further avoiding high-density residential areas including Roleystone, Bickley, Byford, Carmel and Martin and is closer to Karragullen, Pickering Brook and Bickley East. The maps below show actual flight tracks for months before and after the trial began. It is clear that Roleystone has experienced a significant reduction in aircraft overhead since the trial began. A very small number of jets are still tracking south over the suburb. These aircraft have either been directed to use this flight path by Air Traffic Control due to high levels of congestion, or used the flight path to avoid poor weather conditions. Although the area of Pickering Brook has experienced an increase in aircraft overhead since the start of the trial,

most jet aircraft are flying at altitudes of between 8000ft and 12000ft above sea level, which is between 2000m and 3500m above ground level. Therefore noise levels from these aircraft at Pickering Brook will be well below 50dB. The trial will continue until August 2014 when Airservices will review the flight path and decide whether to make it permanent taking into account the full year’s data. This will include an assessment of the noise impacts of the moved flight path and community feedback. We will keep you informed of our decision. It is important to Airservices to be informed of community concerns and I’d like to thank you for your involvement so far. If you’d like any further information, please contact us via: E-mail: ncis@airservicesaustralia.com. Phone: 1800 802 584 – free call to Airservices Noise Complaint & Information Services. The Year 1, 2 and 3 students from Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School were recently challenged by hands-on, inquirybased education programs at Kings Park Botanic Gardens. Each class participated in a separate excursion based on what they have been learning in class. The Year 1 and 2 students explored a bush habitat using observation skills to discover the living things that call Kings Park home. Through their investigations they learnt that all animals need certain things for survival and discussed what might happen to these animals if their habitats change. The students had a wonderful time looking for mini beasts

and animal signs such as tracks and feathers. The Year 3 students travelled through time and learned about the first people in Kings Park and how they used its plants and animals for food, shelter and medicine. They had fun, engaging in role-play and made a journey stick to reinforce this trip through time. They remembered the important people and events that have shaped Kings Park and Western Australia. All students willingly participated throughout the day and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

On Friday 6 June, Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School hosted the South Eastern Single Stream Catholic Cross Country Carnival in the school grounds on Arbuthnot Street in Kelmscott. A total of 10 schools competed on the day. The cross country track at Good Shepherd proved to be a terrific challenge for the runners as they tackled running up and

down hills, twists and turns through the bush and all the while jostling for their position in some very close races. Much to the disappointment of the competitors the track was dry on the day with no puddles to enjoy! There were 40 runners in each race who are all to be congratulated for E: info@roleystoneantennas.com.au www.roleystoneantennas.com.au participating with such enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. counselling, face to face and telephone support, and a Blood Buddies program to pair newly diagnosed people with others on a similar journey. All services are provided free of charge and without ongoing government funding. “There is a 500m or 3.5km route to run, walk, wheel or even skip down and after you sign up you’ll receive a pack of sunflowers to pin to your running gear or to brighten up your sunflower-inspired costume. Our Sunflower Dash will lift the spirits of everyone - those taking part, the unsuspecting public nearby, and the families who will benefit from free support when they need it most,” Andrew said. The Sunflower Dash is a family friendly event and children can dash for free. Adults who sign up before 1 June can do so for the early-bird rate of $30. There is also an option for people to do their own sunflower dare, which gives those who aren’t able to take part in the dash, another way to be involved. To find out more about signing up for the Leukaemia Foundation’s Sunflower Dash or how to organise your own sunflower dare, visit www.sunflowerdash.org. au or call 1800 500 088 today.

Home and Community Care boost for Canning Older people and people with a disability in Western Australia are set to benefit from the release of extra one-off funding announced this week to support Home and Community Care projects in Western Australia, Canning MHR Don Randall today announced. Mr Randall said that Western Australia’s total Home and Community Care program funding for 2013-14 rose by 7.8 per cent to $266.4 million this year, of which the Australian Government has contributed $161.7 million and the State Government $104.7 million. Within this funding envelope, extra one-off funding has been announced to support targeted priority areas of need. “For example, in Canning, $200,000 will be allocated to Anchor Home Help to build a ‘men in sheds’ and community garden

project in Byford, along with $48,400 to re-build an asbestos shed for the Moorditj Program in Armadale,” Mr Randall said. “This is a welcome investment in our community. “The Australian Government believes that older Australians deserve to have the support they need to live active and healthy lives, and to continue to live at home when possible. “We know that many older Australians and people with disability prefer to receive support in their own homes. “The Home and Community Care program provides critical services that help older people and people with a disability stay independent for longer, by providing care where most people prefer to receive it—in their own homes and communities.”

The Leukaemia Foundation is daring Western Australians to dash down the street wearing sunflowers and a smile this June to bring sunshine to families facing blood cancer. Now in its second year, the Leukaemia Foundation’s Sunflower Dash is a fundraising event to help support people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. The event is open to people of all ages and fitness levels, and will take place in Fremantle on Sunday 29 June. The Foundation’s sunniest event draws on the vibrancy of the sunflower and is held at a time of year when for most Australians, the days have turned dark and cold. It is a metaphor for how important emotional support can be for those trying to cope with a life-threatening disease. “This inspired our Sunflower Dash. We chose the symbolic sunflower because even on a cloudy day, it turns towards the sun. It is a beautiful image that makes us think of all the families who have turned to the Leukaemia Foundation to get through the tough times.” he said. Money raised from the Leukaemia Foundation’s Sunflower Dash will be used to support emotional wellbeing through family

Roleystone Community College’s Year 3 Choir upheld a long-standing tradition and recently participated in this year’s Junior Dale Fest at the Kelmscott Hall. Our students sang beautifully thanks to our wonderful Music Specialist Mrs Karen West, who led the children through their musical repertoire. The Junior Dale Fest encourages unison singing and participation with other schools in our district, giving the younger choir members a chance to experience performance on a wider scale. It’s always a popular festival, with many parents attending and supporting our wonderful Junior Choir.

Skateboarding Incursion On Friday the 30th of May, several representatives from Skate Boarding Australia were able to come to workshop skate boarding skills and techniques with select year 7, 8 and 9 students. The day was able to occur thanks to the joint initiative run by the Australian Sports Commission, the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation, the City of Armadale, and Skate Boarding Australia. The day was well received by students, and had all participating students engaged in physical activities, ranging from basic to advanced in skill level. Roleystone Community College thanks Ben Bowring and his team of coaches for a

great day of workshops. The next coaching session that was funded was on Saturday the 14th of June, at the Roleystone Skate Park. If anyone wants any further details, or to make enquiries, jump on the

Skate Boarding Australia website, http://sba.org.au/ Hubs/wa-hubs. Mr Holliday, Sports Specialist Roleystone Community College.

Basketball Clinics On the 27th of May and 3rd of June, students in years 5 and 6 at Roleystone Community College participated in basketball clinics as part of the Physical Education program. Lizzy and Tenny from the Kalamunda Basketball Association taught students a range of skills including passing, dribbling and shooting. We look forward to further developing these skills during the remainder of this term, and hope to produce some future stars! Mr Biddle, Sports Specialist - Roleystone Community College.

Cassie and Megan enjoy a hit-out at the Softball Clinic.

Whilst Tee-ball is in its off-season, some just can’t get enough of the game, and are still out on the diamond. Over the last school holidays, we had two of our girls (Cassie Dempsey and Megan Cantwell) attend a softball clinic in Rockingham, where they learnt some great skills, drills, and had loads of fun. The girls showed pride in their club, and wore their State Championship shirts, putting us on the map down there, and raising questions in the locals about where Roleystone is. Well, now they know! For every Saturday of the past six weeks, we have also had some of our boys attending Little League Transition sessions, run by Perth Heat at Barbagello Park. Kobi Bathgate, Flynn Johnson, Cameron Kraima, Rorke Miles, Josh Johnson, Tomas Koval, and coaches Glenn Bathgate and Lee Miles, had some great interaction with a number of Perth Heat players, who gave them some great

Over the recent 3 day long weekend, our Roleystone Association players and two umpires travelled to Wanneroo to participate in the Netball WA Members Carnival, where teams from all over WA come to play competitive netball. Congratulations to all our girls, who participated in some very tough competitive netball, and also well done to our umpires for keeping everyone in line. It was a long and tiring weekend, but a great time was had by all. The winner of the recent raffle prize, (a pair of sports shoes kindly donated by Blitz Sports Goods) was Ann Bond, whose daughter Rachel plays on Roley Indigo. Congratulations Ann! On a sadder note, we recently heard the sad news that our first life member, and indeed one of our club’s original players, Peta Van Uden, has passed away. We would like to offer our condolences to all of her family and friends. Upcoming events include the Kalamunda Carnivals on Sunday the 29th of June (for 13’s and above) and Sunday the 27th of

July (for 12’s and under). Good luck to everyone participating, and don’t forget to get your registration form in as soon as possible. With the season now in full swing and regrading complete, we would like to thank our club sponsor, the RoleystoneKarragullen Branch of the Bendigo Bank, for supplying many of our teams with their new bibs for the 2014 season. The girls are now wearing them with pride. We would like to continue to acknowledge our on-going sponsorship from Kab Seating, Beaver Tree Services, Metro Mobility, Openica Logistics, Rainstorm Dust Control, The Hon. Tony Simpson MLA Member for Darling Range, Maggie Burke Real Estate, and Blitz Sports Goods. It’s great to have businesses like these assisting our club, so please get on board and support the businesses that support us. With only a few months before our FamilyFest, we are looking for local not-for profit and small business stallholders, performers and between 10-15 enthusiastic volunteers to help man stalls, dress up as characters, help set up and pack down, and assist with the general running of the day (a working with children check is a must). If you are interested in participating, please visit our website www.whws.org. au or call 9490 2258 for more information.

On Wednesday 14 May, Eric McCrumb, i.e. The Bird Man, came to Roleystone Seniors Rooms and gave a talk on birds and all their workings. There was a good attendance of 25 or more people who each held their breath while listening to this very knowledgeable man. What a wealth of knowledge he imparted to us all, and we are all waiting for the next visit (if possible). Eric has a 10-minute segment on ABC Radio 720 at about 7.15am every second Wednesday morning. Tune in and let The Bird Man share his knowledge with you. We know you will be hooked! Dan and Jane would like to thank everyone who took part in the in-shop survey. The response was far more than expected. It has come to our attention that many of the locals would like the Cafe to be open later in the afternoon and are keen on a Sunday roast. We are now preparing for later opening and later closing times for afternoon tea, coffee etc. but the kitchen will close at 1.30pm. It will be beverage and display food only after this time, commencing 9 June 2014. We must stress that if business is slow we will have no option but to close for the day as it is not efficient to stay open for 1 or 2 coffees from 3pm to 4pm. We would also like to advise that we are starting wood-fired pizzas on Monday 9 June 2014. Sunday trading hours will be 11am to 2pm with soup, roast of the day and desert on the menu. You can purchase the special of 3 courses at a special price or as separate meals. Coffee, slices, biscuits and muffins will be available as an extra. This will be commencing 22 June 2014. We cater for functions with different platters at very competitive prices. You can choose from savoury, sandwich, sweet and kiddie platters as well as wood-fired pizzas. We can also lease a slushy machine for cocktails or fruit slushies. Special lunch meals will now be posted on Facebook and written on the specials board at the Cafe. Soup is always very popular during winter.

It was great to see our birds recovered and free to return to their natural environment, even if some of the birds were reluctant to leave! Our purpose is to rescue injured and orphaned black cockatoos for rehabilitation and release throughout Western Australia while engaging the community in conservation action. Our centre is located in the Perth Hills in the suburb of Martin at an old wildlife

This month at Roleystone Theatre sees the start of our acting workshops for this year, with the commencement of our Junior Worskshop Program. This program will be run over the course of the next 12 weeks and result in two plays being entered into Youthfest run the Independent Theatre Association of WA. The course will be facilitated by Bree Hartley, President of Roleystone Theatre, and by Celeste Underhill, who played Peter Pan in last years end of year production of ‘Peter Pan’. The workshop is open to children ages 8 to 18. For more information, please see our website www.roleystonetheatre.com.au. In August we continue with three more workshops – Adult Acting for Screen, Youth Acting for Screen and Youth Dance. These workshops are to be facilitated by

Haley Parker, who successfully ran out Youth Acting for Screen workshop last year. We look forward to having her back. For more information, please head to our website. Our next production for this year (and also our first musical for the year) is ‘The Great American Trailer Park Musical’. This production is directed by Lorna Mackie who directed ‘Avenue Q’ for Roleystone Theatre in 2012. The cast involved include the likes of Cassie Skinner, Joanna Tyler and Therese Cruise, who have all performed with Roleystone before. We look forward to seeing them return to our stage in this hilarious tale of love and life of the Trailer Park. This show promises to sell out. The season runs from the 18th of July to the 9th of August. Tickets are now open, so to book please head to our website www. roleystonetheatre.com.au. We look forward to seeing you at our next production and as always, welcome any new members! Kathryn Ramsell.

It has been another exciting month of football with the mighty Tigers sitting at top spot on the ladder. The Tigers have only dropped one game so far this season to Safety Bay, losing by just ten points in harsh football conditions. But we bounced back and beat Nollamara by 13 goals and Ocean Ridge by 6 goals. Having the Year 8’s play before us when we took on Nollamara was even better

than taking top spot. Although they went down by a couple of goals, the kids showed great potential and they fought hard in typical Roleystone Tiger fashion. We also had the Year 6’s and the Auskickers up at Cross Park. It’s great to see lots of juniors playing for their local club and having the help and support of parents. The future of our football club is in very safe hands. Jake Lewis, Vice President.

Avoiding Winter Chills Winter has finally arrived and for many people this brings colds and flu caused by viral infections. Because antibiotics are rarely useful in treating these infections, what can you do to avoid or treat them? Also, why do some people seem to catch everything that’s around while others catch nothing? It’s all to do with the strength of your immune system. If you have a nice robust immune system then you are less likely to fall foul of infections. However, if your immune system is weak then you will probably get sick more often and may take longer to recover. The factors that may contribute to a weakened immune system include stress, a poor diet, and a lack of exercise, sleep, rest and relaxation. Addressing these factors will help to strengthen your immune system. However, there are other natural things you can do to help boost your immune

system. Vitamin C increases the activity of infection-fighting white blood cells and inhibits viral growth. Zinc is crucial for the development and function of white blood cells. A zinc deficiency can affect your ability to fight infection. Finally, probiotics are friendly bacteria that live in the digestive system, helping to keep it healthy and therefore maintaining a healthy immune system. In summary, to keep winter infections at bay, make sure you eat plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables, avoid sugars, alcohol, white flour and processed foods as these deplete your immune system, exercise regularly, avoid stress, get enough sleep, and increase your Vitamin C, zinc and probiotics intake. You can contact Pam Bailey from Nutrition in Balance at nilbalance@aapt.net.au.

Help boost your immune system NATURALLY, with Vitamin C, Zinc and Probiotics.

Collecting firewood in the Perth Hills area “For personal safety and environmental reasons, you cannot cut down a standing tree, either dead or alive, or cut or break off any part of a standing tree for firewood,” Mr Spencer said. For information about where and how to collect firewood this winter, contact the Parks and Wildlife offices at Mundaring 9290 6100 or Dwellingup 9538 1078. To view 2014 firewood collection maps and a list of outlets issuing permits, visit www.dpaw.wa.gov. au/management/forests/ forest-produce/68-gatheringdomestic-firewood. Firewood can also be purchased from licensed businesses that are supplied by the Forest Products Commission (FPC). People can visit the FPC website at www.fpc.wa.gov.au/ to find their nearest licensed firewood business.

Winter is here and the Department of Parks and Wildlife is reminding Perth residents that a permit is required to collect firewood from designated firewood collection areas in State forest. Parks and Wildlife operations officer Phil Spencer said up to one tonne of firewood for domestic use could be collected every 60 days between 1 June and 30 September. “This year there are two locations within the Parks and Wildlife Swan Region where people can collect firewood – the Chandler area off Albany Highway, 20km southeast of Armadale, and the Kennedy area, 21km east of Dwellingup,” Mr Spencer said. “These designated firewood collection areas are in recently harvested areas of State forest. “It is important people only collect their firewood from these areas and obtain a permit to do so.” Permits cost $15.40 during the winter season and allow for the collection of dead wood on the ground.

Tux and Robo There have been some wonderful foster carers in Roleystone and surrounding areas, doing a fabulous job of ensuring these beautiful animals find loving homes. In some circumstances, they have had a pretty disheartening start to life, but with ample love, care and affection, these foster cats and kittens are now looking for new homes. Tux (the black and white) and Robo (the pure black) were both found with their respective siblings as young kittens. Tux and her brothers were found by a client of Armadale Byford vets, wandering around her backyard and onto the busy road. Luckily, she saved them from any injuries and brought them all in to the vet clinic, where her brothers were soon adopted. Robo and his brothers and sister were found by a maintenance worker in the Armadale police station. He brought them in o the Vet clinic as well, but adopted one of the kittens. One of the police officers also fell in love with them, and adopted two of the kittens. Since all of their siblings have found forever homes, Robo and Tux became lonely and were placed together at www.thevalleyreporter.com.au their foster home so that they would cheer each other up. They have quickly become inseparable best friends, treating each other like brother and sister. Both kittens had rough starts to life, but have benefited immensely from each other’s company. As such, Tux and Robo will need to find a forever home together. Robo is a very adventurous and confident kitten, whereas Tux will take time to get to know you and trust you before she comes out of her GLocal r a v e Gravel, l , R o aRoad d Bbase, a s e , Recycled L i m e s tBitumen one & shell.
