The fine weather has finally begun to arrive, so why not get into the great outdoors and enjoy some of the walks planned for around our area, or soak up the sunshine at one of the Araluen Botanic Park’s School Activities with the children. There should be no excuses, there’s something for everyone to do out in the nature. Don’t forget, Christmas is just around the corner, and The Valley Reporter has some great Christmas gift ideas inside this bumper issue for you to consider. Make sure you mark down St Christopher’s Christmas Fair on Saturday 25th of November in your calendar. There will be plenty of home-made goodies on offer at the stalls for those keen to grab a bargain. Response to Cr Hart’s letter I was disconcerted by ex-Cr Hart’s letter (VR #85 Aug/Sept‘11 pge 10). She seems to be insinuating a youth-vs-aged paradigm about this important issue which not only does not exist, but is inappropriate in our caring community. I know of many Roleystone residents who are extremely appreciative of the efforts and contributions made by our senior members over the years. I also note that many supporters of the retention of the Robin Road green and treed surrounds are members of our older demographic. The current movement towards retaining the oval and treed perimeter, whilst developing the larger parcel of rear land for seniors’ independent living, is neither selfish nor greedy. It is instead a fair and equitable compromise that would benefit our entire community, including our aged population. The site is of significant cultural, historical, environmental and social importance to Roleystone as a whole. I do not consider that the numerous uses for the oval are limited or restricted to a minority demographic. Quite apart from the oval’s current use as a site for community markets, concerts, junior sporting activities and family recreational activities, we need to remember that the Robin Road oval was a vital mustering

point for emergency services and media during our bushfire crisis earlier this year. As a parent, I also note that our Roleystone kids have enjoyed playing there for decades and would like to think that their children will have the same opportunity. There are currently few areas in Roleystone that are grassed, level, shaded, set back from busy roads and are not regularly utilised by sporting groups, where young children can safely and imaginatively play. From an historical and environmental aspect, the perimeter contains several oldgrowth resilient jarrahs and significant plant species that would lend themselves well to successful revegetation. Many bird species, including Tawny Frogmouths and endangered Black Cockatoos, are regularly observed at the site. The land also features significant evidence of some of the first logging carried out in the area, with these huge old stumps utilised by current school children as beloved and unique ‘bases’ for imaginative play. In terms of a seniors’ development on the site, surely retention of the green and surrounds would not only increase the ambiance of the area and add value to individual property prices, but would also provide a privacy envelope from Robin Road for future residents. The leafy canopy provides a peaceful and unique setting that is almost cathedral-like. All of this is located in the very heart of our town centre and is easily accessible by the entire community. There is no doubt that a calm and informed approach is required in order to resolve this important community matter to the benefit of all Roleystone residents. Karen Fouweather, Roleystone.

Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 NEWS RELEASE ROLEYSTONE INDECENT ASSAULT Police are looking for a man who indecently assaulted a 14 year old teenage girl as she was walking along Orchid Drive in Roleystone on 29 August. The man forced her to the ground before the girl managed to break free and run from the area. The man is described as being approximately 18-19 years of age, of fair complexion with some pimples on his skin, medium length dark brown hair, of slim build, around 175cm tall and with grey/green eyes. He was wearing black track pants with a single white stripe down each side, with a dark blue polo shirt. Anyone who can help identify the person is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

HERITAGE WALKS – 18th September 1.30pm The Kelmscott History Group is planning a series of heritage walks that will take place on the 18th of September. The first walk will explore 2 of the oldest churches of the district; the Congregational Church and St Mary’s Church of England, and its surrounding cemetery. Kelmscott, as one of the first settlements in the colony, boasts a very rich heritage. The walks are planned to showcase the places of significance in the historic precinct, which was recently recognised by the City of Armadale.

Visitors on the walk will learn of the lives of local pioneers buried in the graveyard, and their contribution to the growth and development of the district. If you wish to be a part of the Heritage Walk, meet at the Kelmscott Hall on River Road (opposite the Deli near Orlando Street) at 1.30pm on September 18th. Local artist, illustrator and author Katy Jiang has just self-published an illustrated children’s book called “Sandy and the Magic Chinese Book”. Katy has been drawing, painting and writing since her early childhood, but this is her first published book. She was born and raised in Shanghai, China and became an Australian citizen in 2008. The book idea originated 3 years ago, starting off with a series of traditional hand drawings and the birth of her first child Thomas. Over time, and with much encouragement from her friends, she’s been able accomplish what she set out to do. The book is aimed for the 4+ age group and is suited for both boys and girls. Katy’s book focuses on a young girl called Sandy, who starts out having a fun afternoon with her friends, which soon changes into a magical journey through a Chinese wonderland. Will she find her way out? And who is the mysterious Winter Girl? It’s a beautifully illustrated story, filled with all the ups and downs of a classic fairy tale. Katy would like to get more books published in the future, and already has some illustrations on paper. The next proposed series of books would have a chinese proverb or meaning behind each one, and would still be bright, appealing and easy for children to read and understand. Fun afternoon for Netballers at the Country Club

City launches new history book of Armadale region

     

After four years and several tumultuous centuries in the making, a fascinating and comprehensive book detailing the history of the City of Armadale is about to be released. “Settlement to City - A history of the Armadale district and its people” brings to life the events, people and stories which shaped the region as we know it today. Researched and written by respected historians and authors, Jennie and Bevan Carter, the book contains many photos, images, documents and anecdotes taken from oral histories. Starting with the area’s original landowners and the relationship between local Indigenous people and the new English settlers, the history covers every period up to and including the devastating February bushfires. A civic launch for “Settlement to City - A history of the Armadale district and its people” was held on Tuesday 13 September with invited guests from Federal, State and Local Government, along with noted authors and other special guests. This will be followed by a public launch at Armadale Library

on Thursday 22 September, from 10am. Authors Jennie and Bevan Carter will give a brief talk and be available to answer questions and conduct book signings. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the City commissioned the new history book in 2007 and that it had been a mammoth project for the Carters. “This book follows the first history of the region, ‘First Stage South’, by Daphne Popham, in 1980 and really expands on its research and coverage of significant events and issues,” Cr Reynolds said. “Jennie and Bevan’s well-indexed source documentation verifies the authenticity of this history and we believe it will be an invaluable tool for future historians.” The book will be on sale from the City’s Administration Centre, the City’s libraries at Armadale, Kelmscott and Seville Grove, Armadale Visitor Centre and History House Museum from Wednesday 14 September. It retails at $88 for a hard bound copy (limited numbers available) and $55 for a soft bound copy.

My name is Laurie Scidone, and I am nominating for the Jarrah ward at the forthcoming elections. Shortly after the 2009 election, I decided that I enjoyed the challenges of representing my community and wanted to do it all again. I believe that there are many public projects that I want to see completed by Council, and four years on, my desire to represent my community is still strong. This enthusiasm has driven my nomination for this year’s local government election. I believe it would be an honour to once again represent the people of Jarrah. I am currently involved with the steering committees that are endeavouring to establish a Men’s Shed and a Community Garden. I am also actively involved with the working group seeking to rezone the Roleystone Primary School site for seniors’ accommodation. I have maintained regular contact with my former colleagues and I am aware of the pressures facing council. As a well-liked and respected former member of council, I will be able to tackle those pressures effectively and immediately, whilst providing valuable representation if elected. Having managed budgets in excess of $26 million, I have the skills and abilities to ensure that the City maintains sound and sustainable financial management practices. These skills stood me in good stead as chair of the City’s Audit Committee during my first term. A mixture of residential, rural and regional parks, the tranquil beauty of the Darling escarpment makes it the unique place that we call home. This particularity also means we have different needs to the rest of the City. Much more can be achieved if we work together to continue making our neighbourhood a special place to live in. The P&C was approached by Lyndal (a parent at the school) who suggested putting together a recipe book of recipes supplied by families of the school and the wider community. The P&C were delighted to support the idea, and have worked over the last 6 months with Lyndal to produce this wonderful book. Recently I sent a letter to the CEO of the City of Armadale, detailing my concerns regarding the new proposed “Fencing Local Law”. My concern is that this new law will be put in place without local residents being aware of the possible impact it will have on them both environmentally and financially. In many cases, the cost of complying with the new ‘sufficient fence’ law for just acre blocks could be as much as $20,000, thanks to the requirements of the proposed new legislation. Typically, an acre block would have a boundary of approximately 240m, and since new fencing would cost at least $90 per metre, that’s $21,600 gone instantly. That doesn’t even include the cost of removing the existing fence if it doesn’t comply with the new laws. Many neighbours in Roleystone have coexisted for over 30 years without any dividing fence, or with a post and rail fence or a cyclone or metal post and chain link fence. In

many cases, these conditions have existed from before the City of Armadale brought in its 1988 Local Law (amended in 1992) or Local Laws Relating to Fencing in 2000. With the new laws, I can foresee a situation where a new neighbour might attempt to use the Local Law to insist that their neighbour share the cost of providing a new fence from the residential schedule. Before visiting the office of the CEO, I had called into the library, but there was no copy of the Fencing Local Law to view. Since sending the letter, the only response I have received is verbal confirmation that the request for the new laws to not be retrospective is being considered. I had hoped that by raising these issues, it would give the authorities the opportunity to address the situation appropriately, but the lack of a considerable response doesn’t make me very confident that any real action will be taken. I am a Roleystone resident and some months ago, I entered an International Christian Poetry Writers’ Competition. The poems were sent to Canada from all around the world as part of an ongoing search for Christian poets. To my amazement, I soon received an email notifying me that I had won a prize for one of my poems. Since it did not state which prize, I assumed that perhaps I had been fortunate enough to win, at best, a $50 Honourable Mention. However, a few weeks later, a letter arrived from Canada, delayed by the volcanic ash which had grounded so many flights. When I opened it, I was overcome to see that I had won First Prize in this International Competition - and that there was a prize of $300 enclosed. In the letter, the Executive Director of the Utmost Christian Writers’ Foundation congratulated me on my success, describing my poem as an “outstanding piece” brought about by the gift given to me by God. My poem is now on the website of the Foundation for those who wish to read it, but here it is for all my fellow Roleystoners’ to enjoy. Christine Nash.

Local Indigenous children have become the first authors in a pilot Western Australian literacy program aimed at engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse families to create pre-schoolers’ books. We are Champion Children features photos, artworks and fun text inspired by 17 children from Armadale’s Challis Early Childhood Education Centre and the Department for Communities Best Start children’s program. The City of Armadale is one of six WA communities participating in the Creating Books in Communities pilot project, as part of the State Library of Western Australia’s Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds launched We are Champion Children – which is the first book produced by the state-wide pilot – at Seville Grove Library on Wednesday 7 September. “This is a wonderful book for pre-schoolers which just begs to be read over and over again,” Cr Reynolds said. “It contains artworks and photographs of the children and text drawn from the fitness activities, story times and art sessions they participated in this year at the City’s Champion Centre and Seville Grove Library. “The book will obviously be special for the children and families who contributed to it, but I believe it has a wider appeal for our local community and schools. “Literacy and encouraging a love of books and reading among children are priorities for our libraries and

The sessions have taught me that here are 3 keys to unlock happiness, 3 different styles of parenting and 5 keys to communication. Through the Australian Guidelines, I have also learnt how alcohol can be safe when in moderation, and that as parents we are not alone. There is so much information out there for us to find if we just look for it. I have thoroughly enjoyed the small interactive group, where we have all been comfortable enough to willingly and openly ask questions, get involved in THIS FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY THE VALLEY REPORTER AND FN GRAFIX the discussions, whilst still respecting one another’s requests for discretion and confidentiality. These sessions have reaffirmed my belief that a parent’s responsibility is to help build their children’s identities, beginning with positive feedback that affirms their value and worth, and helps them identify, enjoy and develop their unique strengths, so they can move forward in all areas of life. More than half of West Aussies could pay higher premiums The Gillard Labor Government is again under pressure to fix another broken election promise as petitions with almost 35,000 signatures opposing the Government’s proposed cuts to private health insurance rebates were presented at Australian Parliament House recently. The signatures came from HBF members in Western Australia – with 1,928 of those coming from the Canning electorate. Canning MHR Don Randall said, it sends a strong message to the Labor Government that the rebates are essential to encouraging the take-up of private health insurance. He said, the Government

was undoing the good work of the Coalition where private health insurance coverage increased significantly from 34 per cent in 1996, to 44 per cent by 2007. “Despite Nicola Roxon making a promise at the 2007 election that, Federal Labor has made it crystal clear that we are committed to retaining all the existing private health insurance rebates’ – here we are debating this legislation for a third time,” he said. “The Gillard Government’s proposed changes will force people to drop private health insurance and push more people into an already overstretched public hospital system.

“These changes will increase insurance premiums by up to $935 a year at a time when many families, seniors and students are struggling to pay the bills. More than half of Western Australian’s have private hospital cover and would feel the impact of these changes. “In fact, it’s expected more than $3.8 billion in extra costs will be directed to the public health system under these measures, and I receive regular contact from people in my electorate who just don’t understand why the Government would want to do this. All Australian’s should have a choice in healthcare, and have affordable healthcare.”

nominatION for apprentice of the Year Local Roleystone apprentice carpenter Brod Slaney has recently been nominated for the Apprentice of the Year Award. Along with two other state finalists, Brod has been nominated for third year Skill Hire Apprentice of the Year in his trade of Carpentry and Joinery. The criteria for the nomination was a combination of Brod’s results during the year at the Australian Trades College, his performance gauged onsite by the employer and his potential recognised by the Skill Hire state supervisor during regular onsite visits. Brod has been working with local host/employer/builder David J. Willis Building Pty Ltd for the past three years, and has worked on many projects within the Roleystone area. The extensive experience Brod ranges from small and large decking projects, medium to large renovations and/or extensions to existing homes, as well as some large two-story additions most recently. According to builder/carpenter David Willis, Brod’s attention to detail, genuine love of the trade, reliability, honesty and polite respect for his clients’ homes are what make him worthy of the prestigious nomination. The awards night is to be held this month at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. We wish Brod all the best of luck and will keep you posted on the results.

Cr Jeff Munn, Deputy Mayor of the City of Armadale, has opened what’s believed to be the very first clinic of its kind in Australia. In August he had the honour of cutting the ribbon and declaring the Southern Suburbs Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minutes Clinic open. Cr Munn said, “I’m very pleased to be invited to help launch this business here in our area. Cigarette smoking costs 6:44:40 PM Australian families, Australian businesses and the Australian Government.” The social costs of tobacco abuse in 2004-5 totalled just under $31.5 billion, more than 56% of the total estimated social costs of drug abuse in Australia in that year. The negative impact that smoking has on workforce labour is valued at $4.5 billion per year. In the same year, the net healthcare costs of smoking to the government were estimated at $249.3 million (including $21 million lost due to cigarette-caused fires and smoking paraphernalia.) The cost to smokers and their families for loss of unpaid household labour in 2004-5 was valued at $9.8 billion that year. Smokers and their families also bore an estimated $11.8 million in healthcare and nursing home costs, plus a further $16.4 million in costs caused by smoking-related fires.

My Grandad in the UK contributed several poems to your magazine under the name ‘Hicky’. He sadly passed away on June 5th at the age of 89. Before he died, he compiled a booklet of poems to raise money for the ‘Contact the Elderly’ charity in the UK. The public inquiry “A Shared Responsibility” (wa.gov. au/perthhillsbushfirereview) aims to encourage cooperation between agencies and residents. Very few of the houses in our region meet the fire building standard “AS 3959”, predominantly due to their age. Residents can retrospectively make their houses safer for themselves by introducing boxed eaves, evaporative air conditioners, ember screens, and metal wire fly-screens, which can all prevent “ember attack” in the home. Similarly, gaps in the walls, roof or under the home need to be blocked. FESA recommends forming a circle of safety around the home to reduce the fuel load, specifically by removing the fine, dry flammable matter. In their “Prepare, Act, Survive” brochure (www.fesa. wa.gov.au/safetyinformation/fire/ bushfire/Pages/default.aspx), FESA recommends cleaning up gutters, weeds, long grass, excess leaf and twig litter, as well as pruning the lower branches of ‘bushy’ trees and branches that overhang the home. It’s not rocket science, just a bit of work. In FESA’s “The Homeowner’s Bushfire Survival Manual” they cover landscape planning for directly around the home, discussing non-flammable or low

major award for armadale gosnells landcare group A long-term commitment to improving the environment, backed by the dedication of many local volunteers, has resulted in a major state award for Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group. AGLG won the Urban Landcare category of the 2011 Western Australian Landcare Awards held last week in conjunction with the State Natural Resource Management Conference. AGLG secretary, Councillor Pat Hart and AGLG Coordinator, Crystal Gillam, were presented with the Urban Landcare award by the Governor of Western Australia, Malcolm McCusker and the CEO of Landcare Australia, Heather Campbell. The community-based landcare group, which is supported jointly by the Cities of Armadale and Gosnells, will now represent WA in the 2012 national landcare awards in Sydney next year. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the achievements of AGLG deserved to be officially recognised. “This group was established 13 years ago in response to community concern about the declining health and degradation of the Canning and Wungong Rivers,” Cr Reynolds said. “The hard work of their 30 active members

An Interview with Pat Hart by Petra White, 23.08.2011

I read in the Valley Reporter that Pat Hart was intending to retire. I have always respected and admired Pat for her committed involvement in local issues, as well as her status as a positive role model for women. I was delighted that Pat was willing to meet with me and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to her, hearing about her humble beginnings, experiences, projects and visions. She is certainly someone who can see outside the square. In her own words, “My experience and qualifications are my knowledge and relationships with the community”. Q: Who was your greatest role model when you were young? A: My dad. He was a returned serviceman from WW2 who I am very proud of. He always said “You can do anything you want to”. He inspired me. Q: How do you transform your ideas/visions into reality? A: You need to have a strong belief in yourself and others. Wait for the right moment. Don’t rush into things and everything will fall into place. Q: What drives and challenges you? A: If I see something that I and others agree is needed, but isn’t being provided, then it challenges me to try and get that need addressed. Most challenges can be met if you have a positive attitude, respect for peoples’ points of view and good communication. Everything happens for a reason and you have to be open to new challenges and changes. The Roleystone Golf Course challenged me with my concerns with the possible impact on the river – it’s what led me to becoming a Councillor. I have been involved with many local community groups and organisations in the City of Armadale for many years. My first involvement was about 37 years ago, when I and a friend set up the first toy library in Armadale. We funded it by selling fresh strawberry and cream sponges, along with $100 we successfully gained from the City of Armadale. Soon after this I became secretary for the Armadale Primary School P&C – and from then on I have had involvement with numerous community organisations. As I previously said, the path that led me to becoming a Councillor really began with the proposal to build the Araluen Golf Course Estate. Living on Croyden Road, I and other residents of Croyden Road were worried about the impact we believed it would have on us. I was also very concerned with the possible impact on the Canning River. I organised community meetings and wrote many letters and submissions, but eventually it was approved. The local councilor then resigned her position the night the development was approved and this created an extraordinary election for the position. I had never

Pat with grandchildren Casey and Whil Hart. considered running for Council, but on the Tuesday I decided to take up the challenge. I nominated on the Wednesday, was elected unopposed on the Thursday and was sworn in on the Friday by the Mayor Ian Blackburn. I attended my first Council meeting on the following Monday evening, despite having never been to a Council meeting before. Twelve months later I was elected to Deputy Mayor, which was a position I held for three years till I resigned in 1996 to further my work in environment. During my role as Deputy Mayor, I had the occasion to chair a Council meeting where I became the first woman in 100 years in the City of Armadale to chair a full Council meeting. Q: How did you cope and fit in with mainly male councilors? A: No problems - we are all on the same team, working for the same purpose Q: Who is your greatest supporter? A: The “wind beneath my wings”, as the song goes, was and still is my husband Graeme. He is my greatest supporter, and has been for many years. Q: What future do you see for the City of Armadale? A: The current rapid population growth makes the future look both exciting but challenging. As long as there is strong investment at all levels, combined with a very positive community spirit, I am sure the future will be great for all involved with the City of Armadale. Q: What about your personal future? A: The environment has always been important to me. I was brought up near the river in Mosman Park, so I’ve always felt a close connection to the river and land. My leadership role in regards to the environment came when I was challenged by the possible impact on the Canning River by the Roleystone Golf course. I called a meeting at Armadale Council and formed “Armadale River Care’”. From there, it expanded to “Armadale Gosnells Landcare”. This eventually led to the creation of SERCUL, (South East Regional Centre of Urban Landcare) which has become one of the largest community landcare organisations in Australia. My main focus for now is to continue my role with SERCUL, and I look forward to whatever else the future holds. Trees, plants, rivers and animals have no voice. We must all be advocates for their welfare and survival. It is satisfying to think that when I do finally hand the baton over to others that I will have done as much as I could to care for and nurture our natural environment.

In Praise of Robin Road (Primary School) Bushland down on your hands and knees and count, you’ll find about 80 species (not too bad for degraded bushland!) A significant proportion of these species are ones that rarely produce seed, multiplying instead by spreading their own root systems. These species are not available from commercial nurseries, but are keenly sought after by mining companies who have to use expensive micropropagation methods to grow them. Its feel This is difficult to quantify or describe but I believe that the ‘feel’ of this bushland is something truly special. When I am in the Jarrah Road bushland, (which I also enjoy), I tend to focus on the understorey plants and the green warmth that is present. On the other hand, when I wander through the Robin Road bushland, I focus on the trees, which make the bush seem more stately. Both pieces of bushland have their many individual merits and we are fortunate to have two such contrasting forests in the centre of Roleystone. I was motivated to write this “In Praise of” article, so as to put my two cents worth into the local debate regarding the future of the school grounds. It is my personal opinion that it would be wonderful to retain this bushland, which I would love to be able to wander through when I’m living in a seniors’ unit in my golden years. Ian Colquhoun. There is a small piece of bushland near the centre of Roleystone that holds a special place in the heart of many residents who attended the Roleystone Primary School or had children at the school - it is the bushland in the school grounds on the corner of Robin and Jarrah Roads. As a local resident with interests in botany, ecology and tree pathology, this bushland fascinates me. A recent consultant report classified the bushland as degraded, but even so, it is still a wonderful piece of nature that is unlike any other in Roleystone. Why do I think it is so wonderful? Its resilience Over the last fifty years, thousands of children have swarmed over this bushland, making cubby houses, playing chasey, and many other energetic games. Despite this enormous level of ceaseless trampling, reminiscent of a herd of mammoths, most of the trees have survived to this day. As a bushcare person who is committed to protecting trees from dieback, the resilience of these trees has always amazed me. I am sure the dieback pathogen is on the site and has been for many years, but tree deaths are still a rarity. Extraordinary! Its history There are some very old trees here. The oldest stumps are those of trees that were logged in the mid to late 1800’s. When you look at the site through a historian’s eye, you can see a stump, see where the original tree fell, see the huge branches of the tree, and see the gap where the sawlog was removed. And now, you can see the emergence of a newer tree growing in that gap, fulfilling the forest’s regeneration cycle. It is difficult to age the larger trees, but it seems likely that the big ones are over 200 years old. Some have huge fire scars from blazes that occurred about 100 years ago. But not only do these trees hold the secrets of the past, they hold the promise of tomorrow - many of the larger trees act as nesting sites for the black cockatoos which have been classified as rare. Its plants A cursory look at the bushland would suggest that there are very few plants species present. However, if you get

Of all the five senses, our hearing is perhaps the most precious. Helen Keller once said that “Hearing loss is a worse misfortune than being blind. When you lose your vision, you lose contact with things, but when you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people”. The weight of this problem costs the Australian economy almost $12 billion a year. There are a few reasons why we choose not to do anything about our hearing loss. Firstly, hearing loss often occurs gradually, which makes it difficult for people to identify and recognise the change. It can be easy to make excuses such as “they don’t speak clearly” or “I hear everything I want to hear”, rather than accept the truth. While I was reading “A Shared Responsibility the Report of the Perth Hills Bushfire”, I was very interested to see a section that quotes from the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience that I must share with you all. The strategy has an explicit focus on building disaster resilient communities and goes on to say: People understand the risks that may affect them and others in the community. They understand the risks assessed around Australia, particularly those in their local area. They have compressive local information about hazards and risks, including who is exposed and who is most vulnerable. They take action to prepare for disasters and are adaptive and flexible to respond appropriately during emergencies. I am sure that this is a description we would like to have for our community and all those in fire-prone areas. We can help develop this ideal by undertaking our own ‘bushfire ready’ requirements, getting involved in local Bushfire

Ready Groups, addressing the risks on our properties and having an action plan. We need to receive regular up-to-date information from the State Government and Council as to how and when recommendations in this critical report on the February bushfires are being implemented. We need to have community awareness forums where we, as a community, can learn more about things like retrofitting homes, and have the opportunity to ask questions on the various aspects of things we may not be sure of. All the questions often queried by community such as SMS and radio alerts, and evacuation procedures are identified in this report with the appropriate recommendations. If we all make a commitment to fully embracing this idea of “shared responsibility”, with all the information and support we have, we will be able to successfully identify, accept and fulfil our individual roles within our community.
