Fiona Newland – EDITOR/PUBLISHER This month’s issue is jampacked with extra events to do with the Roleystone Primary School, as you’ll see when you have a look through the pages. I’m sure a lot of people will agree that it seems sad that we are leaving behind our beloved school in central Roleystone. However, we are about to begin a new chapter with much trepidation, but great anticipation as well. Best wishes to all the staff and new students commencing at the Roleystone Community College in 2012. This issue also brings some great ideas for last minute Christmas gifts, and as always The Valley Reporter encourages all its readers to shop smart by shopping local. You’ll get all your shopping done in next to no time! The City of Armadale is hosting some up and coming events at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. Whether you are a competitor up for the challenge or an avid spectator, make sure you mark these down on your calendar. The Australian Open Water Championships are from February 17th to February 19th, and the Australian Rowing Championships and Interstate Regatta are from March 5th to March 11th.
Don’t forget to check out the Roleystone Schools Parents and Citizens’ Association Raffle results on page 12, because you never know, it may be you that will be receiving an early Christmas bonus! This month’s Valley Reporter is showcasing the Roleystone District High School Year 10 Class of 2011 on the centre pages. Check out all the wonderful photographs! All these young students have certainly grown up into fine ambassadors for Roleystone, and The Valley Reporter wishes them all well in their future endeavours. If you are after something to keep the kids busy these school holidays, then why not check out the Armadale Arena. They have Monkey Play, Junior Skills Clinics, a creche, Junior Netball Competition and even a Teen Boot Camp. There’s bound to be something for everyone, so turn to page 25 for the full list of programs available. Our own Roleystone Scouts are proudly presenting an under-the-stars movie fundraising event. They are screening Disney-Pixar’s ‘Up’, a hilarious uplifting adventure where the sky is no longer the limit. This event will be held on
Saturday 11th February at the beautiful Karragullen Oval, where you can bring your blankets, chairs and picnic or enjoy a gourmet sausage sizzle. Turn to page 27 to see where you can get your tickets. For some, the start of December has just been one big rollercoaster ride so far, so if you’re in that boat, make sure you take some well-deserved time out at the Roleystone Country Club’s Children’s Christmas Party, which will be from noon onwards on Sunday 18th December. There will be lots of free entertainment for all the family, including face painting, sausage sizzle, raffles, free lolly bags, live music, and of course a visit from Santa. Everyone is welcome. Lastly, one of the greatest joys of the festive season is giving, and The Valley Reporter wants to take the opportunity to give a great big thank you to all our readers, and wish you all the very best for the New Year!

A friend and I recently attended the Roleystone Theatre’s latest production of “Little Women”, which I personally must admit I thoroughly enjoyed. I’m not a big fan of musicals in general, but the good storyline kept me enthralled throughout the performance. Even though it had a rather small cast in comparison to other productions, the audience was not let down. For the people who aren’t familiar with it, “Little Women” is a coming-of-age drama which chronicles the lives of the four March sisters; brassy, tomboyish, aspiring writer Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth, as well as their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts. I would just like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Director Paul Treasure and Musical Director Tim How on a wellaccomplished WA Premier Broadway musical. I’m sure the rest of the community will agree with me that we are very lucky to have it here at our doorstep in Roleystone. A Great Christmas Gift Idea! I have just published a photo book of wildflowers photographed by me in the Bedfordale area. It is a unique book, which has had a very pleasing reception from all those who have seen it so far. On the Friday of our recent long weekend we (and several other friends) had been invited to a barbeque lunch by a good friend we hadn’t seen for a while, who also lives in Roleystone. Unfortunately, just before we were about to leave our home, I got a phone call from our friend in a distressed state to say she would have to cancel the barbeque as her neighbours had a bobcat operating in their back yard and that had been going since the morning. The noise was so loud I could barely hear her voice over the phone. As our friend had not been very well due to a work accident, I was concerned and decided to give her a call the following morning. When she answered the phone I could again barely hear her due to an earpiercing, high-pitched noise that sounded like a dentist’s drill. To my dismay, she informed me this often happened on a Sunday - usually throughout the day - but this weekend it looked like it was going to continue both Saturday and Sunday (which as I found out later, it did). She told me that on several occasions she had to leave her home just to get some peace. Again it was the same neighbours operating power tools outside. I felt very angry that some people could be so inconsiderate of others. I thought there must be guidelines on restrictions for noise control on weekends. After a call to Armadale Council I discovered this was correct. The operation of power tools and loud noise in general in a residential area must be between the hours of 7am and 7pm on weekdays and Saturdays and 9am and 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. More importantly, I discovered the noise is to be restricted to TWO HOURS –

According to Robin Clarke, Chairperson of the Gold Plate Committee, “The Gold Plate Awards program was started in 1967 by the Wine Service Guild, and has since grown from a small, low-key affair into one of the premier events on the Western Australian Hospitality Industry calendar. The program provides professional recognition for quality, and enables the Catering Institute of Australia to achieve one of its core objectives, which is to encourage and reward excellence”.

Water Corporation Incursion Earlier on in Term 3 representatives from the Water Corporation came to Roleystone Primary School and held water information sessions for all students from K-5. We learnt very valuable lessons about how to look after our water and why it is such an important resource. Through this incursion the Water Corporation contacted a local Rotary Club who then purchased a classroom’s worth of microscopes for us. They also supplied batteries for each one, which can be very expensive.
At the presentation we have Mr Andrew Heddle and Mr Sam Youssef, from Kenwick Rotary and Mrs Karen Tabner from the Water Corporation. We are very greatful to them all for their support. This initiative was started by our Chief Scientist, Dr Lyn Beasley because she saw how valuable it would be for all children to have access to a microscope. A bevy of Olympic rowing stars and hopefuls will descend on Champion Lakes Regatta Centre next March, with national titles and selection for the London Games on the line. Armadale will play host to an estimated 1,250 athletes competing in the 2012 Australian Rowing Championships and Interstate Regatta, from 5-11 March. Triple Olympic gold medallist Drew Ginn will join Western Australians Ben Cureton and Todd Skipworth – gold medallists at the recent World Championships in Slovenia – and WA Olympian Sarah Tait, as highlight competitors at the event. The Australian team bound for London will be chosen in April, so performances at Champion Lakes will be of the highest calibre, said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones. “This is a magnificent opportunity to witness world and Olympic champion athletes in action, at an equally outstanding facility,” Cr Zelones said. “Champion Lakes is Australia’s newest, purpose-built rowing course and it is a jewel in the crown of WA sporting venues. “Rowing WA bid for the 2012 national titles after successfully running the Australian Masters Rowing Championships at Champion Lakes in 2010.
“It will be the first time since the mid 1990s that WA has hosted the Australian Rowing Championships and Interstate Regatta, underlining the importance of having a worldclass facility. “The City of Armadale is proudly supporting this event and we are excited about the opportunity to showcase Champion Lakes and the wider region to participants, officials, supporters and spectators.” Rowers from around the nation – representing open/elite, junior and schools categories - will compete in more than 600 races throughout the week-long national championships program. Among the stand-out events are the eight “state v state” races which include the prestigious King’s Cup (men) and Queen’s Cup (women). The history of the Interstate Regatta can be traced back to the first intercolonial race between NSW and Victoria men’s crews in 1863. The pick of the open events - the men’s pair race, the men’s double scull, women’s double scull and women’s single scull - will feature medallists from the September 2011 World Championships and Olympicbound crews. The City of Armadale is looking for feedback from Roleystone residents to provide an indication of how some parks may be upgraded. The City will be conducting a phone survey in December 2011 to collect feedback from residents to assist with future developments. The City has appointed Patterson Research Group to conduct a random telephone survey of residents in the relevant areas of Roleystone. Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones says, “The survey is intended to ascertain resident preferences for upgrades to some of the public parks in the area. “The results from the phone survey will assist in guiding future decisions by Council on how the remaining funds from the Public Open Space Strategy may be allocated in the Roleystone area.” Survey questions will be based on three options for park upgrades to parks in the Roleystone area. Funding may be used to undertake one of the three options below: A) Option A - Construct a public toilet facility in Borrello Park; B) Option B - Undertake upgrades to several parks around the suburb, which have existing recreational uses (Borrello Reserve, Warwick Savage, Roleystone Heritage Trail and Lina Hart Reserve); or C) Alternative upgrades and/or upgrades to an alternative park that is not identified in Option’s A or B above. Residents will be randomly selected to receive a pre-notification letter, which provides an overview of the proposed phone survey. If the oval is purchased and retained for public purposes, will
ongoing events held on the oval in the future impact on the amenity of those who will be living in the senior’s housing and surrounding homes? Do the small number of people who wish the Council to purchase the school oval for their perceived uses realise there are numerous Council reserves throughout Roleystone that could be used for that purpose? Canning MHR Don Randall is inviting local small businesses to identify areas of red tape that can be cut as part of the Coalition’s Deregulation Taskforce. Established by Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Mr Randall said the Taskforce will be headed by Senator Arthur Sinodinos AO, Chief of Staff to John Howard from 1997 – 2006. “Arthur Sinodonis has such credibility in this area and the focus will be on cutting the red tape that impacts jobs growth and productivity,” he said. “Since Labor was elected four years ago, the Federal Government has introduced more than 12,835 new regulations and repealed only 58.” Mr Randall said figures provided by the South East Metro Small Business Centre showed there were more than 50,000 ABN registered businesses in the Canning electorate that red tape would be affecting. He said the Peel Small Business Centre would hopefully be able to tap into feedback from the State Government’s Reducing the Burden review undertaken by the red tape reduction group in 2009, Chaired by Liza Harvey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Small Business. “Tony Abbott has set the target of reducing the cost of red tape by $1 billion per year at least for the first term of a Coalition Government,” Mr Randall said. “The fact is red tape is getting worse – it takes small business people away from their families and hinders them from growing their business. “I encourage small businesses in my electorate to make a submission to the Taskforce. They can do this by sending me their ideas and recommendations, which I will then provide to the Taskforce,” Mr Randall said.

The Community have their say – Cross Park Skate Park
On Thursday 8th of December, the City of Armadale hosted design workshops concerning the future Cross Park Skate Park with Roleystone people interested in having their say on its development. The project has been in development and consultation since a comprehensive study in 2007, with significant research and evaluation continuing with the upcoming community design consultation. The first meeting was attended by a good crowd of youths, who had the opportunity to meet with Rohan Buckley, a design consultant from Convic International specialising in the design and construction of skate parks and recreational areas. Rohan will now gather all the ideas and feedback given by Roleystone locals in order to ascertain what is wanted for the Cross Park Skate Park. A second consultation, which will bring initial design concepts to interested parties, is anticipated around mid to late February 2012. These workshops are a great way for the local youth and wider community to get involved. In addition to the workshop exclusively for local young people, there was a community workshop for all other local residents, so that the project fits the needs of users and the local community.

Just imagine the magic of many people gathering along the Swan and Canning Rivers, focusing on their precious waterways as the sun rises to herald a new day. At 6am on Saturday 10th of December, this was the scene at the blessing of the Canning River, which was held at Roley Pool, just below the steep stairs on Collins Drive, Roleystone. It was a simple ceremony, which lasted about 20 minutes, with tea and coffee made available afterwards. This event provided all who attended time to: • Consider why our community cares for the Swan and Canning Rivers, as well as the associated waterways and wetlands; • Appreciate all the amazing attributes of these precious waterways, and their significance to our community; • Think about how we can all assist in maintaining and conserving these natural landmarks that we are so fortunate to have in our lives; • Give thanks for all those who are

We have seen another rise in vandalism at Cross Park, and the last thing the community should be doing is running and hiding. There has been strong advocation for “removing the youth”, and although the idea of throwing them all in a hole might be appealing when it’s your stuff that has just been broken, it just won’t do for a long term solution. Every child and every youth is a building block for our future, whether we like it or not. They need supervision and guidance until they grow up and the hormones settle. So what to do? The State government has design guidelines applicable and relevant to similar needs and situations. The State Planning Commission’s Design Out Crime outlines how youth should be given a place that allows them to congregate,
which should also be highly visible. The idea, which they call “natural surveillance”, is that the public can give our youth the freedom they want whilst still keeping an eye on them. The issue in our case is the youth congregate away from the road, in an area that is not very visible. The guidelines recommend that the congregation points are either relocated closer to roads, or that the community is brought to the congregation points. Admittedly, this is easier said than done - established areas have infrastructure which can not be easily moved, and the community is unlikely to have any desire to get closer to a poor area of razed equipment and broken glass. It’s my opinion that the balance should be tipped back to the community. The guidelines recommend that focus be put on: • Improving maintenance by removing “indicators of crime”, perhaps by better reporting?; • Incorporating “preventative maintenance measures”, such as vandal-proofing park features, which were the subject of a recent Council report; • Making places more secure by populating them, and creating a mix of uses that promotes extended surveillance. As well as being a rehabilitation centre for sick and injured wildlife, Kanyana is also home to a breeding colony of Bilbies. Over 100 bilbies have been born at Kanyana. Our regular nocturnal tours give you an opportunity to see the Bilbies in action. Our location provides a magnificent setting in which to see some of Western Australia’s most endangered mammals, as well as some birds and reptiles which can still be found living in the Perth Hills. Guests are invited to arrive prior to 6.45pm to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the heritage-listed Paxwold House. Tours commence at 7pm with a short talk about Kanyana’s role in the community, followed by a guided walk around the property after sunset. Our nocturnal residents, including Bilbies, a Burrowing Bettong (Boodie), Brush-Tailed Bettongs (Woylies), Tawny Frogmouths and Sugar Gliders can be seen feeding and interacting. The Echidnas, Elle and Arouba, usually come to greet visitors and, on some occasions, we are fortunate to view Southern Brown Bandicoots (Quendas). Tours are scheduled for the 1st Friday and 2nd Saturday of each month. We can also book special tours for groups of 10 or more. Tours are conducted by members of Kanyana’s dedicated Education Team and cater for around 30 people. Tours usually 9291 3900, from 8:30am-5pm take about 1 1/2hrs. Elite swimming is coming to Armadale! Only months out from the London Olympic Games, the nation’s top distance swimmers will be competing at the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships from 1719 February at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. The prestigious Armadale facility will host more than 300 swimmers, plus many more spectators, supporters and officials over the three-day event, supported by the City of Armadale. Racing in 5km and 10km events, open and age group competitors will vie for selection in Junior Pan Pacific and Oceania Championship teams, as well as national glory. Distance star Melissa Gorman - the 2009 world champion in the 5km open water event - is already qualified for Olympic selection and will swim the women’s 10km, while national champion and WA’s own Rhys Mainstone will also be in action. Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said it was a major coup for Armadale and Swimming WA to secure the Australian Open Water Championships in an Olympic year. “This is a predominantly Sydney-based event, so we believe the quality of the

Sympathy? Mary Monica Lynch (1905 - 1989) was an asthmatic for all of her adult life. She was a mother to eight children, one of whom died at only 20 months old due to accidental strychnine bait poisoning, hence the attached. She was the wife of a wheat and sheep farmer, and managed to cope with her condition in an environment loaded with dust and grain. She inhaled medication from a hand pump atomiser day and night. It was so much a part of her routine that the sound of her wheezing breath became permanently seared into the memories of her children. Her farmer husband, James Benedict Clune (1907 - 1990) was a physically powerful man. When prodded to demonstrate his physical strength by those who didn’t realise its extent, he would sometimes walk to a full wheat bag, drop his hanky over the binder-twine stitching, lean over the

This term marks one of the busiest times our P&C has ever encountered. The amalgamation will have many positives for the P&C when it operates from one site. However, the process of getting there requires a lot of hard work and financial outlay. For example we have to refit a whole new uniform shop, decorate the school canteen after the alterations have been made to accommodate the larger number of students and stock the new uniform shop to name but a few. I am sure I don’t have to remind you that the P&C benefits every child in our schools in many ways and for the majority of the time we achieve this with the support of a relatively small group of parents. But as mentioned the amalgamation has presented us with a unique situation which puts us in the unprecedented position of having to ask our parents to help us in a way we haven’t done before. Here is how…. 1. Can you give us some of your time? To pack the uniform packages in January or offer to look after a friends children to enable them to volunteer to do this job, packing for the move, helping on moving day, cook up volunteers (half a day in January) and help out for one hour on the food stall at the P&C Farewell to the Primary School. 2. We know not everyone has time to donate so perhaps you can contribute towards a specific item on our wish list; Cash registers, plastic storage boxes, shelving or wood to use to make shelves, signs, sheds, picnic benches, shade cloth, baking trays, pie warmer, bain-marie warmer, crock pot, hot chocolate machine, floor covering – uniform shop, rice cooker, roller blinds – canteen and uniform shop, v-slicer (for onions etc), notebook computer and printer. Maybe a group of parents would like to get together to fund one item. Perhaps you have one of these items at home and you no longer use it. 3. We need the help of skilled tradesmen….. Do you know anyone you could recommend or who would volunteer some of their time? 4. Finally if you aren’t able to answer yes to any of the above then our final request is for you to make a donation to the P&C of $10 per family. Our birds were stolen from our back yard over the weekend. They were only visible from our back gate. As we live on the Araluen Estate, I think it is a timely warning to all residents that thieves are living amongst us. Drummond Golf WA State Competition, September 2011 Local Roleystone boy Jordan Howell played in the State Final at the Lake Karrinyup Golf Club against a field of 106. The Lake Karrinyup Country Club is widely acknowledged as Western Australia’s premier golf club, and was home to the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2002 and 2003. The game was a handicapped stableford event where Jordan scored 43 points, equivalent to 9 under par. Jordan was able to beat his own father, Todd Howell, on the last par 5 hole, by one strike. He was also in the team that won the team competition, with a team score of 53, equivalent to 17 under par. Jordan’s efforts won him an all-expenses-paid 2 day trip to Melbourne to play in the National Final, as well as a golf bag, golf balls, golf hat and a golf polo shirt. Drummond Golf National Competition, November 2011 In Melbourne, Jordan played a practice round on the Thursday, before being treated to a sumptuous dinner with all State Finalists and Brett Ogle at the Victoria Golf Club. The Victoria Golf Club is acclaimed by golfers the world over for its fine hospitality and superb world championship course. Situated in the heart of Melbourne’s rolling sand belt country, in the beachside suburb of Cheltenham, it offers a sporting experience on par with the worlds best. The beautifully landscaped par 72 course is designed to challenge both the amateur and professional golfer and was the host club for the 2002 Australian Open Championship and the 2010 Australian Masters. The Club will also be holding the 2011 Masters Tournament later this month. It was there, at the VGC that Jordan played in the National Final the following day. The game was again a handicapped stableford event where he scored 34 points, 2 over par. Considering the winner shot 38, 2 under par, this was a fantastic achievement on such a hard course. At the presentations after lunch, Jordan received his State Finalists Tour Golf Bag. All in all, it was a great experience that Jordan will certainly never forget. Congratulations Jordan! This month we take a look at some of the popular styles of white wine. Sauvignon Blanc This light, crisp-style wine is usually described as being green or grassy and has flavours of asparagus, gooseberry and sometimes peach and passionfruit. Because of its fruit salad characteristics and the fact that whites are drunk chilled, it is perfect for those warm summer days and goes well with cheese and sushi. Semillon This slightly bolder white wine is often associated with lemon or lime flavours and usually has hints of apple and pear. This is because of the high malic acid contained in the grape. made famous by the Kath and Kim series where it is referred to as ‘cardonnay’ - is usually light and mild, with flavours of melon and butterscotch. It can also have notes of white peaches and nectarines. To enhance its flavours, chardonnay is often oaked, which makes it bolder. A good chardonnay, when aged, will fill your mouth with rich, buttery, cashew nut flavours. It is most commonly paired with roast chicken and other white meats such as turkey. Heavily oak-influenced chardonnays do not pair well with delicate fish and seafood, but go better with smoked fish, spicy south-east Asian cuisine, garlic and guacamole dips. Mellow chardonnays are often paired with “earthy” dishes like mushroom soup and aged cheese. Dessert Wines Not a specific varietal, these wines are usually made from riesling or semillon grapes, which are either left on the vine until they look like raisins, or are allowed to be affected by botrytis mould. This causes the grape to lose much of its water content and increase its sugar levels. This concentrated fruit is then fermented, giving a rich, sweet flavour that goes perfectly with desserts. Or they can be enjoyed on their own at the end of a meal. I have covered only some of the wines styles available and my descriptions have been quite general, because taste can vary so much depending on the climate, soil and weather conditions. But it should be enough to get you onto the right track. When you make your next visit to your local liquor store, get the staff to help you by telling them what you want in a wine and what you intend to use the wine for. Is it for a BBQ, a formal dinner, or just to be enjoyed with some great company? How much do you want to spend (not all good wine will cost you and arm or a leg). The Benedictine monks who own the land and buildings of SIC did not renew the fifty year lease, which lasted from 1913 to 1963, and during that time, the closest anyone came to matching my father’s performance was a K.B. Many people are quite prepared to remove all existing native vegetation and replace it with “fire-retardant” vegetation. Before you do, there are a few things you may like to know…. The CFA Victoria discourages residents from relying on published lists of “fire-retardant” plants1 and the NSW RFS directs residents to the CSIRO publication Landscape & Building Design for Bushfire Areas2 that details vegetation management and plant qualities thought to influence a plant’s flammability – moisture/oil/mineral content, leaf fineness/density, amount of dead foliage/bark3. A further study by the CSIRO, Ignitability of Leaves of Australian Plants4, has determined that the main factors influencing flammability are moisture content and leaf thickness. The study demonstrated previously recommended “fire-retardant” plants, were of greater flammability than expected. For example, the Lilly Pilly (Acmena smithii), burnt nearly twice as quickly (18 sec) as the Grampians Gum (Eucalyptus serraensis, 33sec). Many so-called “fire-retardant” plants were less moist than expected and often with thin leaves4. Most WA plants previously listed as “fire-retardant” 5,6,7,8 are saltbushbluebush-dunebush-desertbushswampbush varieties because they were suspected of being low flammability due to their expected high salt/water content - but none of them have been properly tested and none with leaf thickness in mind. The two main disadvantages to this are - 1) the “fire-retardant” plant lists are probably inaccurate – the species may be “fire-retardant”, but many low flammability plants would not have been included and 2) many of the “fireretardant” plants listed, are listed because of their saline/drought affinity and are less likely to grow well in Roleystone or be commercially available. So what is “fire-retardant”? Officially no plants are “fire-retardant” because all plants burn1,2. However the advice from the Fire Authorities relating to vegetation maintenance is still valid - remove dead material and ‘prune shrubs down and trees up’1,2. Luckily most of Roleystone’s native shrubs are short and less hazardous and the more hazardous species, such as grass trees, can be kept tidy by pruning/burning. For the “fire-retardant” die-hards, nearly all of Roleystone’s “strappy plants” have been listed as “fire-retardant” – kangaroo paws (Anigozanthos spp), purple and yellow flags (Pattersonia spp), morning iris (Orthrosanthus spp), cotton heads (Conostylis spp) and lilies (Dianella spp) as well as the ground covers - purple robes (Scaevola spp) and coral vines (Kennedia spp). Also, local to the Swan region and
commercially available - are the swan river pea (Gastrolbium celsianum), hopbush (Dodonaea spp), poverty bush (Eremophila spp), snail hakea (Hakea cristata), golden wattle (Acacia saligna), swishbush (Viminaria juncea) and swamp sheaok (Casuarina obesa). More ideas? “Give me a home among the GUM TREES, with lots of PLUM TREES….” The plum family, Prunus (plums, cherries, peaches, apricots, nectarines & almonds) are frequently recommended “fireretardant” plants. Fruit and nut trees come recommended because they will be well watered & moist year round - they are the only plants specifically recommend by FESA. “Fruit trees give excellent fire protection – plant as many as you like, all around the house”9. This year, the Roleystone Primary School is closing and moving to the High School for next year. Many may not remember, but back in 2005, when the Primary School celebrated 100 years of primary education in Roleystone, my granddad Ronald Murby (often known simply as “Ron”) made and donated a model of the very first school in its humble beginnings of 1905. Looking at how the school once was over a century ago, it’s hard to believe how much it has changed and grown into the wellloved facility it is today. We can only imagine how it will look in the future when it moves to become one with the high school in 2012. A Bushfire Ready Group is a number of neighbours working together to prepare their properties and street for the bushfire season. Skate Park Etiquette Guidelines on Appropriate Behaviour at Skate Facilities There are a number of ‘unspoken’ rules when it comes to skating. Below is a list of some of the common issues/things to be aware of if you are new to visiting skate parks. This list is not definitive however is designed to provide guidance to new skaters and parents. Be Honest About Your Skateboarding Skills Being new to skating isn’t a bad thing! Most skating injuries occur in new skaters so you need to be careful and don’t attempt any tricks or use equipment which is beyond your skill level. Even if you have been skating for a while,

don’t go trying to jump down a set of stairs before you can jump off a curb. Protect Yourself To help avoid injuries (particular when just starting out) it is important to wear safety equipment. Your head may seem pretty tough, but concrete is much tougher, so be smart and wear a helmet! Knee, elbow and wrist protection are also encouraged. Check It’s Safe to Skate When you arrive at a park check if it is safe to skate. If there is dirt or water on the park your wheels are more likely to slip. Glass on the park is especially dangerous. Falling onto broken glass isn’t pretty. If the park is supervised, let someone know that the surface needs to be swept. If there is no way of making the park safe, find somewhere else to skate. Only Bring What You Need A few bucks and a phone in your pockets are much easier to keep track off than a backpack in a crowded park. Watch For Other Skaters Cutting across someone’s path can cause problems for other park users and may lead to some bad injuries if you collide. Be patient, wait your turn, watch out for each other. New skaters usually struggle with this rule, particular if they are young as their spatial awareness is still developing. If a skater is continually causing problems help them out, explain nicely what they are doing wrong, and demonstrate the right way. If You’re Hurt Ask For Help If you fall off of your skateboard and aren’t hurt get straight back up and move out of the way. Lying in the middle of a skate park can lead to worse injuries – skateboards can hit you, people can land on you, etc. But if you are badly injured, ask for help immediately! Wait Your Turn In a crowded skate park, taking turns at having a run is important. Don’t cut in front of someone who has been waiting
ages to go. Think Before You Sit When you sit or stand in the skate park, you are putting yourself in danger of being hit as well as irritating other park users. If you sit down in a skate park, you are likely to be blocking the rail, ledge or ramp that someone wants to use. If you’re having a break, move off of the park and out of the way. Follow The Traffic Flow In most busy parks, skaters will naturally tend to skate in a certain direction around the facility. Skating against the flow of traffic is dangerous. Watch Your Board Anyone who has been hit by a skateboard knows it can hurt so keep an eye on your board! If your board slips out from under you, and is heading towards people let them know. Yelling “Board” can give someone enough of a warning to move out of the way. If your board ends up flying off of the park, make sure you give your board a shake/wipe down to remove any dirt. Tramping dirt onto the park can make the park dangerous to skate. Avoid Marathon Runs When it’s your turn to skate avoid doing a massive run. Watch what other skaters are doing, and make sure that your turn is around the same length as theirs. Doing an occasional long run is acceptable if you are landing a lot of tricks but always taking forever will irritate the skaters waiting for their turn. BMX/Scooters Most of the time skaters have to share parks with people riding BMX and scooters. Be respectful of each other is the easiest thing to do in this situation. If someone on a BMX is using a bit of the park you’d like to use, just ask them if you can have a go for a while. Remember if you’re nice to them they are more likely to be nice to you. Help Each Other Out If you see someone trying to land a trick over and over again – try not to embarrass them by doing the trick right in front of them to show them how easy it is for you. You can always offer to help them out, if you know what they need to change – for example if their foot positioning is wrong. Say Sorry If you accidently break one of the ‘rules’ or collide with someone, simply say ‘sorry’. It’s easy to do and people will respect you more. Respect The Park You should be proud of your local skate park, so do your bit to make sure it looks good. Put your rubbish in the bins provided. Tagging/graffiti isn’t a good look and can also make the surface slippery and hard to skate. Everyone Has to Start Somewhere Once you have been skating for a while it can be easy to forget how hard it was when you first started out. Try and remember that the young kids often just need someone to point out the rules. Try not to be hard on them, you were just like them once! Following successful general gradings the week before, Kofukan Karate Roleystone added three more black belts to its ranks at the final senior grading for the year on 27 November. After a challenging grading lasting almost three hours,

Sensei Darren proudly tied black belts around the waists of Glen Baker, Elrina Hartman and Kaitlin Brindley. Roleystone’s newest Shodans have all been training for years, for as Association President Matt Beaumont put it in his postgrading speech; ‘karate is a sport in which there are few short-term goals’. Glen Baker provided an unfortunate Rocky moment, as an accidental blow during the sparring gave him a black eye he was still sporting at the Christmas party a week later. Sensei’s Cameron and Brooke were training partners for the candidates, providing them with someone to demonstrate their various takedowns and throws before the grading panel. Sensei ‘the floor is my friend’ Brooke even got a little emotional as the candidates received their new belts, or she could just have been thinking about the half a dozen first or so 1st kyu students already planning to attempt black belt next year. The following Saturday saw the entire dojo plus family and friends get together at the Roleystone Hall for the annual Presentation and Christmas Party, where grading certificates, new belts and trophies were presented. Our big crew of Little Guys were especially well behaved, waiting patiently until the formalities were over and they could tackle the bouncy castle and bucking sheep ride provided. Club DJ Mark Hollings got almost everyone out on the dance floor, with the noticeable exception of Sensei Darren who was going for an operation the following Monday for a (non-karate related) back injury. Like the rest of the club, he is looking forward to a good rest over the Christmas break, then back for another eventful year in 2012. Merry Christmas everyone! Quenda or southern brown bandicoots (Isoodon obesulus fusciventer) have all but disappeared from Australian cities yet they can still be seen throughout Perth, particularly where dense low vegetation persists. Conservation planning by the South West Australia Ecoregion Initiative has recognised the importance of protecting natural values across the Perth metropolitan area, and the bandicoot serves as a flagship species for protecting suburban biodiversity values. The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) will survey for bandicoots throughout greater Perth in spring 2012 and results will be compared with an earlier 1984 survey to see how numbers have changed over the past 20 to 30 years. Karate Pemberton Camp October 2011 With the car all packed we headed off for the 4 hour drive down to Pemberton! Yippee!!! We were on our way for a well earned Queen’s Birthday long weekend of kicking back with the Karate mob. Friday morning, over coffee and breaky (with the kids all giving the local birds their breaky as well) relaxed plans were made. Many of the kids – both young and old enough to know better – headed out to the BMX tracks. Since last year, the Pemberton Council has put in some more tracks for off road bike riding – man what a ride! “Whoops” and “Wheeeee” were heard all the way down, then there were big smiles all round at the bottom. Melinda was so happy she hadn’t fallen off that she fell off her (stationary) bike in all the excitement.

An afternoon drive to Moon’s Crossing was a nice trip out, but the water level was much higher than last year so only two brave guys ventured across. The Friday night shared meal was just fantastic. The kids ran around with glow sticks, the fire was stoked and a few bevies were had. Saturday brought relaxing with a book for some, others went canoeing at the Karri Valley resort,
or wine tasting, or even a 4WD adventure to the beach. So the Camper’s Awards go to: The Band Aid award goes to everyone who fell off at the BMX track: Ben McWalter, Georgina McWalter, Jeff (sorry mate, too many witnesses) and Melinda for stacking it while standing still. The Blue Run Award goes to the Baker family for completing the (difficult) run, and a small trophy to Gary who (allegedly) made it, although there were no witnesses. And lastly, The Thank you Award goes to all those who stayed in the camp to look after the kids so that your friends / family could go and blow off some steam. The kids said that the best part of the camp was the BMX track, and trail bike rides and the 4WD-ing. I asked some of the adults around the Saturday night camp fire and they said the same things. As you may know, at around 11:16am on Thursday 24th November, a fire was reported to be burning in the eastern part of Martin, in the City of Gosnells. Seventy-five career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fire Service and Department of Environment and Conservation firefighters were at the scene, with two water bombers also deployed to protect crews and homes. As the fire was burning in the Banyowla Regional Park, there was no immediate threat to homes, however due to the strong fire behaviour, resources including earth-moving machinery were used on site to contain the blaze by afternoon. Douglas Road between Feldts Road and Canning Mills Road was kept closed for the safety of motorists, who were told to avoid the area and to be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. As a precaution, the Roleystone District High School and the Roleystone Primary School were evacuated. The WA Police would like to take this opportunity to remind people that 000 should only be used in the case of an emergency. People can get current information on the bushfire situations by calling FESA on 1300 657 209 or listening to your emergency broadcaster, ABC Local Radio for regular updates. Roleystone Bushfire Street Meetings The Valley Reporter attended the last of the Bushfire Street Meetings held on Sunday 27th November at the Roleystone District High School oval. As shown by the photographs, there was a very good turnout, no doubt a result of the recent Martin fire being fresh in people’s minds. Chris Cairns and Robbie van Uden from the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade conducted the information session on the day, along with Ruth, a FESA representative, who was able to answer a number of the questions posed by the crowd who attended. An array of FESA stickers, magnets, DVD’s, printouts and brochures were on hand for people to take away and read. The main message conveyed throughout the meeting was the importance for people to be prepared early. In order to
be “bush fire ready”, there are 6 things to consider and learn: • How can you reduce the amount of flammable materials around your property? • What should you do to make your property safer? • What should you do to keep your livestock and pets safe? • How can you protect your home from embers? • Where can you access information during a bush fire? • How can you prepare, whether you stay and defend your home - or decide to go early? The reality is that in a major bush fire, a fire appliance may not be available to protect every home. This means that residents and homeowners need to be responsible for their own fire safety. Now is the time to join your local Bush Fire Ready group and work together to prepare for bushfires.

The Roleystone Settlements Gala Day was a great success with 20 teams from across the metropolitan area taking part. The day commenced with the traditional ‘spider’, which was won by our very own Alison Brown. The morning round of bowls was followed by a scrumptious lunch and the final games in the afternoon with the presentations held over afternoon tea. Winners on the day were a team from Sorrento, with last year’s winners from the Perth and Tatterstalls Club coming in a close second. In club events, Margaret Munn continues her good form with a win in the Ladies’ 100-Up competition after defeating Shirley Thomas in the final. The plate was won by Eileen Green. Unfortunately the unseasonal weather caused the cancellation of the third week of the Bendigo Bank Community Bowls, which is proving to be as popular as ever with several new teams playing for the first time. Away from the greens, club members enjoyed their annual Christmas get together with a luncheon at the Manse Restaurant in Armadale.
