It’s nice to see so many contributions from the Roleystone and surrounding community, proving that it truly is YOUR Region, YOUR Magazine and YOUR Valley Reporter. I hope you all enjoy reading the many stories in this edition. Perth recently held a Defence Force Air Show like no other and I’m sure the traffic congestion that came with it has all been forgotten. One Roleystone resident managed to be amongst the action and has written a recollection from the day turn to page 4. Finally, there is someone that understands that we need to put the ‘business’ back into small business. Shadow Minister for Small Business, Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs, Bruce Billson, recently attended a business breakfast at Roley’s on the Ridge to discuss how he would like to boost small business in outermetropolitan areas, such as those found in the electorate of Canning. I just wanted to thank you very much for publishing the beautiful touching story of “Goodbye Jana, from Mr Jones”. It was so incredibly heart-warming as was Dr Judith Congrene’s tribute to her beloved Amy. Dr Judith Congrene assisted my golden retriever with his passing (at my home) in 2009. This service was greatly appreciated as it avoided the very stressful return drive to the veterinary clinic and allowed my beloved Monty to pass peacefully in surroundings familiar to him. I have shared the article of Jana’s passing with many of my dog lover friends where I work and it has moved many to tears - even though heart-warming as well. I was thinking how wonderful if would be if there was a regular section in the Reporter devoted to our beloved pets (particularly given all the negative stories about dogs that have been published in the local publications recently). For those about to part with an aged or sick pet, stories like Judith’s (preparing to say goodbye) and the
one from Mike and Cyn Shord (picturing the beautiful Mr Jones saying goodbye) could be very helpful to people who are facing this forthcoming painful journey. Others wishing to share those final moments may find that it could be helpful to those having just lost a pet or those feeling the need to have a peaceful and pain free passing of their beloved companion, who in most cases is regarded as an important member of their family - hence the profound grief that can be experienced by devoted owners at this time. Cheryl Marshall. I wanted to express my thanks to some local good Samaritans who provided assistance after an incident following the recent storms that resulted in my car becoming flooded. A lot of rainwater was running off Migrant Park onto Brookton Highway and I was forced to brake suddenly due to the driver in front of me. Unfortunately I stalled the car, ended up down an embankment and the car suddenly filled with water. It has since been written off due to water damage. I would like to sincerely thank the man who stopped to check I was ok and the lady who called the tow truck driver. Verna Splatt, Roleystone Community College. The new land managers of all of Araluen Botanic Park are the Department of Environment, who have some great plans including a fantastic upgrade of the entrance area and initiatives such as encouraging the public to get to know the magnificent bushland within the park. They have already upgraded the lighting, seating and other areas within the park. I have been advised they will be releasing a more detailed explanation of their plans for the park in the near future, which I am sure you will all be very impressed with. (Note that the Araluen Botanic Park Board manages under contract the area within the park that does not contain the majority of the bushland.) A letter in our other local magazine more or less indicating there would be no real tulip celebrations this year at Araluen could not be further from the truth. In fact there have been many thousands of tulips planted by fantastic volunteers. There obviously will be a wonderful tulip display in springtime, similar to that run over the past two years. Have no doubt thousands of people will come down the valley to see the tulips. It is a ritual for many people and they will have the benefit of a well planned and magical experience. Pat Hart.

Is anyone else concerned about the war going on in Chevin Road? No, I am not talking about an invasion from aliens or terrorists, it’s those pesky cockatoos. These magnificent birds have lived in harmony with all the locals in this area until recently, but now they are not wanted. Why do people who do not like any form of wildlife come and live in Roleystone? I happen to want these birds around and do not appreciate being forced to listen to a gas operated explosive device designed to frighten birds away. Where do you want them to go? For those people who do not have an appreciation for local native wildlife and who want to continue being destructive, why not focus on the feral pigs, rabbits, cats, foxes, toads, foreign bees, or European wasps? Can I please put up a device around my property that makes a big noise every time a cat comes into my place to look for bandicoots, or when I have to breathe in toxic, foul-smelling smoke? When Mother Nature comes knocking, big bangs will not save you, nor will your rifles or big bucks. Our Premier “Colin the Conquerer” sets a very bad example to the people of Western Australia, as he is someone who will blow up, dig up, or put anything in jeopardy for the almighty dollar. Please Roleystone residents, show some respect and love towards our wildlife. If we can welcome horses, dogs, cats, sheep, cows and chickens, why not native animals? Amazing air show Roleystone resident Adam Quartermaine attended the Defence Force Air Show at RAAF Base, Pearce, at the end of May. Here are his impressions from the day: It’s not very often that civilians get the chance to see inside RAAF aircraft so the Air Show was a great opportunity to do this. The largest aircraft on display was the C17 Globemaster, used for transporting helicopters, tanks, jet fighters and other infantry vehicles. It can carry up to 134 troops. Last year Globemasters were used to air lift supplies to areas affected by flooding caused by cyclone Yasi. It was really amazing to see the inside of the C17 Globemaster and gain an understanding of the sheer size of the plane. It can carry around 72,500kg. I met the pilot and asked him how good the visibility was from the cockpit. He told me that having extra windows near your feet was good, especially as the plane was often flown at low altitudes. He also said it was funny seeing the look on the cows’ faces as he

At the request of Canning MHR Don Randall, the Shadow Minister for Small Business, Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs, Bruce Billson, visited Roleystone to talk with local small business people. The meeting took place over a business breakfast at the scenic Roley’s on the Ridge last Thursday, June 7. Mr Randall said the Shadow Minister brought a wealth of knowledge to the forum. “Bruce has a Masters Degree in Business Leadership and has worked in local, state and federal government for many years, in both advisory and ministerial roles,” Mr Randall said. “He is also a family business owner himself and focuses on how to boost small business in outer-metropolitan areas, such as those found in my electorate of Canning.” Mr Billson outlined at least a dozen initiatives the Coalition would implement to “put the business back into small business”. The measures included rescinding the carbon tax, improving small business access to Commonwealth contracts, cutting $1 billion of red-tape costs, making sure there
was a Small Business Minister in Cabinet, and giving small business a say in taxation. “The Board of Taxation has no-one from small business on it – yet the tax office has an impact on all our small businesses everywhere,” Mr Billson said. He also discussed how the carbon tax was lowering consumer confidence, and that a small business loan was 14 times more likely to default than a housing loan. “It (carbon tax) is 18 times the size of the European model – and Europe’s got 22 times the number of people to pay for it. That works out at $1 per European. Ours is $400 per Australian,” he said. “Right now, so unsettled are Australian families and businesses, they are saving – they are doing what the Government should be doing. It’s called economic cocooning. “Small businesses are in every community. The Western Australian Environment Awards acknowledge, reward and recognise the businesses, government agencies, community groups and individuals who make a valuable contribution to protecting and conserving the State’s natural environment. The Awards program has been very successful during the past decade in providing recognition to those organisations, community groups and individuals who are setting new benchmarks in environmental care and conservation. In 2011, the awards attracted entries from individuals and community groups with small, local initiatives through to government departments, small business and large corporations. Entries were received from as far north as Kununurra to Esperance on the State’s south-coast. Individuals, community groups, corporate/ business and government (State and local) can choose to highlight their environmental
initiatives through the following categories in 2012; Corporate Business Leading by Example, Government Leading by Example, Small Business Leading by Example, Biodiversity Conservation, Bush, Land and Waterways, Resource and Waste Management, Environmental Education and Communication, Sustainability, Rivers, Estuaries and Wetland Environments, Community Achievement – Regional and Metropolitan. The 2012 awards will open for nominations on June 5 and close in late July. All judging will occur in August/ September and finalists will be announced in late September early October. Judging is conducted by recognised industry experts in each of the category fields along with sponsors. Award winners will be announced at a presentation dinner to be held on 9 November 2012. Roleystone Matriarch Scores another Milestone
Local Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Marjorie Gibbons was very excited to celebrate her youngest grandson’s 50th game milestone with the Roleystone Junior Football club recently. Luca Sallur is the youngest of Marjorie’s 8 grandsons, and she has been there over many years to see all the boys run through a lot of banners, celebrating 50, 100 and 150 games and been there to watch all the footy action on the field. She has lost count of how many games she has seen. Hundreds no doubt!
Marjorie is a sporting granny as she has also watched most of her 4 granddaughters netball and basketball games at the Ray Owen centre in Lesmurdie. She has been cheering and supporting the girls for as long as she can remember! Weekends are very busy, as she has to make time to get to Subi, or the couch, to watch her beloved Eagles notch up another win. With Will Carrigan in the Y13’s, Luca in the Y12’s for the Tigers, and Sophie Sallur playing basketball with the Roleystone Basketball Club, there will be plenty more banners and games to celebrate.

Roleystone’s Kalani Grant is one out of the box Not content with excelling at one of the usual sports like athletics, netball or hockey, 14-year-old Kalani is landing some big hits in the boxing world. A product of Fox’s Boxing and Fitness Gym in Gosnells, Kalani recently fought and won her first official major bout in New Zealand by a technical knockout, scoring 29-8 from the judges. Cancer fight – get behind the Stone family You may have seen recent media reports of a Perth toddler suffering from a rare cancer being taken to the US for specialised treatment expected to cost his family about $250,000. Two-year-old Jayden Stone is the son of Roleystone-born and raised Danny Chambers now Danny Stone - and his wife Leisl. Little Jayden is extremely sick with an aggressive cancer known as atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour. Tragically, very little is known about the disease. It affects three in a million children in the US and sufferers have just a 10 per cent chance of survival. The Stone family, including brother Luke and sister Layla, have been in Chicago for several weeks now, with Jayden undergoing proton beam radiation therapy – this treatment is not available in Australia, but is believed to target cancerous tissue more precisely than standard radiation therapy and reduce adverse effects, especially in children. Mum Leisl has been writing a daily blog, revealing the emotional and exhausting battle both Jayden and his family have been enduring. Bushcare and Environmental Working Group and Custodians, the following information has been received from The Department of Environment and Conservation who are conducting a survey based on bandicoot numbers in Perth. WA’s main environmental agency has launched a survey to track the number of bandicoots living in Perth amid questions over whether the city’s growth is reducing their population. The Department of Environment and Conservation is staging the survey in conjunction with World Wildlife FundAustralia as part of moves to protect the marsupial. DEC Swan region ecologist Geoff Barrett said bandicoots, or quendas, had once been prevalent across many parts of Australia but their numbers were thought to be rapidly declining. Cats were an acute threat to the animals, while urban encroachment was also a significant problem. WWF species conservation manager Katherine Howard said the survey would compare

Kelmscott Senior High School alumnus Gillian Shilling is starring in a world premiere from Hollywood writer and director David Stevens this June. Best known for The Sum of Us, A Town Like Alice and Breaker Morant, Stevens’ new work is described as a “love story reinvented”. Directed by Mark DeFriest at the Old Mill Theatre, The Beast and The Beauty re-works the classic tale of magic and enchantment and sets it in the Australian outback of the late 1880s. The so-called beast is Tom, a man of the land who was horribly disfigured in a bushfire as a baby. Shilling plays Irene, who runs the local town’s general store with her husband. “Irene loves and respects her husband, and the decisions he makes, especially when he helped save Tom as a baby,” she said. “She can be quite prudish but has a soft spot for Tom and makes allowances for many of his vices.” First performing with Roleystone Theatre seven years ago in the pantomime Mother Goose, Shilling has also appeared in Tea House of the August Moon, Alice in Wonderland and Class of 77, also working on several short films, commercials and corporate videos. “I loved the script for The Beast and The Beauty and was keen to audition for Irene,” she said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in a play and wanted to do justice to a smaller role.

As school holidays approach in July, families may be considering some time away from home, which may require putting their pets into kennels or catteries for boarding. It is amazing how quickly the year passes and it’s easy to forget to maintain the vaccination boosters which are required before a pet can be admitted to boarding facilities. A new project named “Canning Pools” is being undertaken by the Swan River Trust in partnership with the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group and SERCUL. The aim of this long term project is to “identify and protect critical habitat pools to secure freshwater fauna in the Canning River for the future”. This project will be completed in stages, with the first section being
undertaken from the Canning Dam wall down to where Stony Brook enters the Canning. The initial study is to build an understanding of the physical and biophysical attributes of the pools in order to prioritise them and their sustainability. The next step is to develop management strategies for each of the priority Canning River pools. Pat Hart.
ROLEYSTONE SENIORS HOUSING COMMITTEE TO CONTINUE The Roleystone Seniors Housing Committee will continue to exist until the seniors housing development in Robin Road is completed. The committee at its last meeting agreed it was important to maintain its role during the various stages the site has to go through before any development occurs. The committee wishes to acknowledge and thank Kelvin Oliver, a town planner and local resident, who has been part of our committee and has given freely of his time, knowledge and experience. Kelvin will continue in this role for us.
We would also like to acknowledge committee member Trudi Hodges, CEO of Dale Cottages, who assisted us greatly with our questionnaire. It’s a busy time of year for netballers, with training sessions, games, umpiring and for some players, representative commitments. Four players from Roleystone Netball Club, proudly sponsored by Roleystone Real Estate, were part of a 14 years-and-under Kalamunda districts team which demolished the opposition at the Smarter than Smoking Association Championships held over the June long weekend. Congratulations go to Jemma Grayson, Abbey Jones, Caitlin Williams and Sophie Boughton, along with all other Roleystone players who competed at the carnival. Annual Fun Run on Western Australia Day More than 200 competitors – serious runners and those who preferred a walking pace – set aside the Western Australia Day public holiday on Monday 4 June for John Wollaston Anglican Community School’s annual Fun Run. The event started and finished in the school grounds and offered a choice of a 4km or 7km course that took in the nearby Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. This is the second time John Wollaston has held the Fun Run and the school hopes to attract even more participants next year.

Roleystone Community College Aiming High With a wonderful bushland setting, engaging specialist programs and guidance from its forward-thinking Council, Roleystone Community College is fast establishing itself as the school of choice in the Perth Hills. The Valley Reporter recently attended the College’s Open Night Expo to see some of the outstanding projects and activities underway. The Expo followed another memorable College event, the Grow Project’s Food Revolution Day. The winner of The Shadowcatchers Facebook/Twitter book draw is Daniel Holliday who teaches cinematography at RCC, Western Australia’s first and only Department of Education Specialist Film and Television Secondary School. He was awarded with a copy of the book The Shadowcatchers in a contest organised by the Australian Cinematographers Society. At the recent RCC Open Night Expo Aquaponics WA representative Maurice Van Aurich was on hand in the sustainable waterwise garden along with Helen Cotter and Ed Blaker to talk about growing your own fish and vegetables at home. Maurice briefly explained to a small group of parents the many benefits of aquaponics: • Reduced water use. only about 10% of the water required for traditional gardening or aquaculture; • Reduced or only soft/natural chemical use; • Little or no pests when set up in a controlled environment; • No back breaking digging in messy, dirty soil; • No soil borne diseases and virtually no weeds; • Can produce fish and plants all year round. Dad-to-be Jake Howe turns 21 It was the kind of 21st birthday Jake Howe never expected to have. Released from Shenton Park rehabilitation centre for the June 4 celebration, wheelchair-bound Jake spent the day quietly in Roleystone with his family, girlfriend Jessica Morgan and a few friends. Only a few months ago the lively young carpenter was looking forward to buying a new home with Jessica, who is pregnant with their first child. Then his life changed in an instant. Wrestling with a mate on the Barrack Street jetty after a party in March, Jake’s body flipped and he landed on his head. The shocking result of a bit of high-spirited fun was a broken bone in Jake’s neck that crushed his spinal cord and left him paralysed from the armpits down. Mum Carol Howe paid tribute to her son, saying he was “remarkable – a lot of the time he has kept us going, not the other way around. “I would do anything to turn time back, it is has been hard for all of us.” Jake will be a fulltime resident at the rehabilitation centre until late July or early August, just prior to the birth of his child. Carol Howe said the recent removal of a collar
from Jake’s neck would allow him to do far more active physiotherapy and hopefully advance his recovery. “He has made some progress, but he is still numb from the armpits down and although he has some wrist movement there is no hand dexterity yet.” Jake’s employer, Des Milne from Grand Carpentry, has organised a large fundraising event to be held at Gloucester Park on Saturday July 14, with about 700 people expected to attend. And unlike his low-key 21st birthday, there will be a big party in Roleystone when Jake finally comes home.

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Through the funding that we have received under the Language Hub program, we are able to offer an exciting opportunity for a select group of students from Armadale Primary School, Kingsley Primary School and Roleystone Community College to attend an academic extension course in Indonesian for 2012. This opportunity is funded by the National Asian Language and Studies in Schools Program. Selected students from Year 6, along with Year 6 and 7 students from the other schools, will be involved in a broad range of extended learning activities in Indonesian language and culture throughout the year. They will be using technologies such as iPods and laptops in many activities, especially to communicate with other students in Australia and Indonesia, using the Indonesian language. The class size will be limited to a maximum of 18, enabling these students to gain confidence in conversing in Indonesian. Students will need to be motivated learners with a good work ethic and an interest in language learning. A variety of topics will be covered throughout the year, and a term planner will be provided at the commencement of each new term. Students, parents and schools principals will receive a formal assessment at the end of each semester. A few fast facts about Roleystone Community College’s Founding Principal, Peter Thatcher: Born in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, Peter grew up with his three brothers playing plenty of sport. His father was the District Superintendent of the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade for 45 years and young Peter and his mates were “always in trouble” playing with the water, hoses and sliding down the fireman’s pole! After attending Melbourne Boys High School, Peter completed a Bachelor of Business (Marketing/Finance) at Monash University and later, a Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) at Edith Cowan University and a Masters Degree in Education at the University of Western Australia. With a self-confessed love of all sports, competition and coaching, Peter has represented both Victoria and Western Australia at junior and/or senior level in Australian Rules football, kayaking, rowing, cross-country running and boxing. In his youth he spent two years on Hawthorn Football Club’s rookie list and played reserve grade at this level. He also won the University of Western Australia “Oarsman of the Year” award. In WA he has taught in K-Year 12 schools over 30 years, including Wesley College where he coached the school’s First Eight rowing crew in the prestigious Head of the River competition and taught Year 10, 11 and 12 physical education, business and English. In addition he has taught at the District High Schools of Kalbarri, Wongan Hills and Dalwallinu and in K–Year 7 settings at Warnbro, Kelmscott, Balga and Cannington. Further, Peter was named 2007 Principal of the Year for the Fremantle Peel Education Region. Peter is married to Carolyn and has two daughters.

Library budget boost paves way for more guide dogs • State Government commits more than $2million to Association for the Blind • Three-year funding supports improved access to library texts The Association for the Blind of Western Australia can now spend more on guide dogs, after a State Government pledge of more than $2million to the association’s library program. The 2012-13 State Budget commitment will provide the association’s accessible information unit with $698,000 a year Helen Morton for three years, to produce texts in accessible formats. Minister for Mental Health; Disability Services Minister Helen Morton made the Disability Services announcement at a recent guide dog graduation ceremony. “The accessible information service allows people to search an online catalogue of more than 60,000 book titles and download or request texts,” Mrs Morton said. “The digital books can be played on any mainstream MP3 player, including iPods, mobile phones and personal digital assistants. For people without access to the internet, texts are supplied on special re-usable USB cartridges via mail.” The service also provides accessible format conversion (to digital, audio and Braille) to individuals, Government, businesses, educational institutions and the community. “Its potential for social benefit has been recognised through a 2011 Premier’s Social Innovation Grant, which is helping the Association for the Blind develop an online accessible format conversion tool,” the Minister said. The only items not accepted at the Drop ‘n’ Shop are tyres, mattresses, computers and carpet. Funds generated from Drop ‘n’ Shop sales go towards the running of the centre and for community programs encouraging recycling and sustainable living. Roleystone’s recent massive victory over the Cockburn Cobras, 31.19 (205) to 10.11 (71), in the first encounter between the two clubs at Cross 31 19 205 Park had supporters asking if this in fact was a record score by the 10 11 71 club. Bob Stevens, who over the life of the Tigers has maintained a data base on various facts involving the club, was quick to let Tigers fans know that the score sits in sixth place behind the team’s highest-ever score of 40.24 recorded on 2nd June 2007. On that Saturday afternoon, the game was contested at Hillcrest Oval, the home of the Bayswater club, which was restricted to 6.02 (38) by the rampaging Tigers. At Cross Park, the Cobras struggled to hold Roleystone’s Brendon Abbott, who registered 11 goals from various positions in the forward half. The 11 goals was also a long way short of the goal-kicking record for the Tigers, which sits at 17 and was kicked by current club President Jason Hammond against Murdoch back in the late 1990’s. To be fair to the Cobras, they were without a number of key players on the day and the Tigers were able to produce some of their best football for season 2012. In the matches ahead the Tigers will be fighting to qualify for a finals berth with a number of other teams, so all percentage-boosting wins will go a long way to deciding positions on the premiership ladder by the end of the season.

giant chess set
Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School students have been using the School’s new giant chess set. Students have been bringing the giant chess set out every lunch time to play with it and once lunch time is over the school’s prefects pack it away. Because all of the students have been playing with it, their problem solving skills are developing and because of this we will be having a chess tournament. Students will be able sign up for the tournament which will be run by the Year Six Library Leadership team. On Thursday, 17th May, Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School Kelmscott held their cross country faction carnival. The event was organised by our sports teacher Miss Lauren Shaw. The Year Ones were the first group to run and they are to be congratulated for their efforts at their first carnival. They ran one lap of the school oval. The Year Twos were the next to compete, running two laps. The students in Years Three, Four, Five and Six challenged themselves by running the 1.4 kilometre cross country track which is set in the schools grounds. There were four factions competing; Canning came 4th, Ward came 3rd, Xavier came 2nd and our faction Forrest came 1st. By Elena Pizzata & Robert Kelly (Forrest Captains‘12). On the Friday, 25th May Good Shepherd hosted their first ever interschool cross country carnival in the school grounds on Arbuthnot Street in Kelmscott. There were 9 schools competing on Jenny Whitney (A.M.A.N.F.) the day. In each race there were 36 runners (4 from each school.) There were 12 races in total. Dream Consultant Good Shepherd students were strong competitors with first places being won by Year Three Space Clearing student Eliza Mitchell, Mackenzie Henderson from Year Four, Chelsea Henderson from Year Beginner’s Meditation Five & Emma Lange & Zach Bormolini from Year Six. The last two weeks at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School have been a time of great celebration. The students in Year Six received the sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, 27th May. They were blessed by receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit into their lives. Year Four made their First Holy Communion on Sunday, 10 June and for the first time they shared the bread and wine of Jesus Christ. The students and their teachers have been preparing for these important occasions at school and the families of the students are thanked for supporting and guiding the students through these important milestones. The celebrations of the Sacraments are supported by the whole school community at Good Shepherd. Students in Years Four, Five and Six willingly shared their time on the two occasions to come along and sing in the choirs at the Masses. The choirs were supported by two past students. Emma Oorschot (Head Girl 2008) performed as a vocal soloist and Georgia Wells (Head Girl 2010) performed as a Flute soloist. Having our past students come along and share their talents helped to make the occasions very special and highlighted the warm sense of community that is unique to Good Shepherd. The students shared a special cake together at school as part of the sacramental celebration.

Roleystone Karate’s Awesome Foursome Make State Team
Given the consistent success of Roleystone’s Kofukan Karate students at local novice and major state tournaments, it was only a matter of time before they achieved recognition at an elite level. After competing in the AKF State Karate Championships on Sunday 20th May, four of Kofukan’s best have been selected for the WA State Team to compete at the Australian National Championships in Melbourne this August. Kaitlin Brindley, Brooke Williams, Gabby Purser and Cameron Carling have all been training extremely hard and have earned the opportunity to represent WA. Congratulations are also due to Roleystone’s Kate McWalter, who competed at the State Karate Championships as well. She picked up first place in the Female Veteran kumite with an inspiring display of skill and courage. (Kate chose not to nominate for the WA State Team selection due to an impending luxury holiday!!) Sensei Darren considers that the team’s well deserved selection is testament to their skill, ability and dedication to the sport of karate. He says of the crew, ‘They are a fantastic bunch and you couldn’t ask for better role models for junior and senior students alike. I am very honoured to be able to call them my students’. Radio dog fence – how it works How can a radio signal keep a dog safe, protect gardens and allow you to have a fence that looks great, but won’t let your dog through to create havoc in the neighbourhood? Sometimes traditional fencing may not be enough to stop a determined and sneaky dog. What is the Radio Dog Fence difference? This kind of barrier is created using a ‘radio wire’ that runs around the area you want the dog to either be enclosed in or kept away from. The wire is actually the aerial from the radio transmitter. The transmitter lives inside a shed or garage and is powered from a normal power point via a small transformer. When the aerial/wire comes back to the transmitter the radio signal has nowhere to go and it has to expand outwards. So, by turning up the range control on the transmitter, you are putting out more radio signal to keep the dog further away from the fence. The special radio collar the dog wears gives the dog a ‘correction’ in the form of a static pulse if it goes too close to the fence or gateway. This stimulation from the collar is the deterrent to the dog, but it has to be the dog’s decision to stay away after it is trained to achieve success using this kind of system! Be aware that Radio Dog Fences can cause interference with radio signals inside your house and can also be interfered with by other radio signals. This can mean the dog could either escape or receive ‘false corrections’ from stray radio signals. Each property and dog is different so look for reliability and flexibility in a radio dog fence (including surge protection for the transmitter and a warranty).
