The Second Bite Community Connect program are looking for volunteers to help in their cause, so turn to page 6 for all the information about the program and full contact details. National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community nature care event, with thousands of people doing their part for the natural environment on Sunday 29th of July. The City of Armadale is proud to support events which will see thousands of native trees and shrubs planted in local areas as part of this national celebration. There have been inquiries as to what happened to the water tank at Cross Park, and it’s a good question. It was due to be replaced during the last financial year, but is only just being replaced now. The replacement process will also include the pipes and sprinkler fixtures at Cross Park. This is part of a citywide aim to improve irrigation efficiency in the face of decreasing water supplies. The water tanks at Springdale and Karragullen are also in this year’s draft budget for replacement. Cross Park-Springdale “Master Planning” If you are in a group or club in Roleystone, and would like to express your interest in using public land or property, please read on. The precursor report relating to the City of Armadale’s current and future needs in the established areas, “Active Sporting Reserves and Community Hubs Study”, was released publicly in February of this year. For perusal you can go to www.armadale.wa.gov.au/ Home/Your_Council/Agendas_and_Minutes/ Download_Agendas_and_Minutes?timesp an=2012-02-01|2012-02-29. The Council report states that “The objectives for the study included: 1. Development of guiding principles to achieve sustainable use of community facilities. 2. Development of community hubs that can be used by the broader community. 3. Achieving optimal use of the sporting reserves.”
The study apparently “revealed the high cost associated with the maintenance of the reserves and the room for improvement in terms of community use and access to reserve infrastructure”, and also “highlights duplication of infrastructure on some sites which will need further investigation with a view to consolidation of these buildings and other infrastructure. This approach will have a number of benefits including improving efficiency of infrastructure and lowering ongoing costs to the City for maintenance and operation.” This broader study across the City of Armadale has led to the detailed studies at Roleystone (Cross Park/Springdale) and Kelmscott (Rushton Park/John Dunn Reserve). Sporting and community groups are urged to consider what infrastructure they use, require or wish for and write it down and send it to the City as soon as possible. All of the main groups will also be independently contacted by the consultants conducting the new detailed “master planning” study. Groups should not only think about what they require but also how they can work with or colloborate with other groups. Also of interest are the basic numbers of how many are in the group/club and how often you meet etc. The main focus appears to be on consolidation and maintenance cost saving, but not to the detriment of social amenity. Make sure you let the City of Armadale know how important your group or club is! Caroline Wielinga.

An ancient technology rediscovered to aid modern learning An exciting learning aid has made an appearance, sparking new interest in its value. Indications show that if it catches on, all electronic gadgets will be rendered junk. The device is known as Built-in Orderly Organised Knowledge. The makers generally call it by its initials: B.O.O.K. It can claim many advantages over the learning and teaching aids which most people are brought up with nowadays. Roleystone Community College Verge Rehabilitation Project The Roleystone school has very highly valued residual vegetation on its grounds, the best example of which is the area of vegetation on the corner of Brooks and Raeburn Roads. Every year, we have been treated to the beautiful natural display of orchids and wild flowers amongst the large Marri and Jarrah trees, but this bushland has now been dealt a harsh blow by recent construction of car bays and excessive clearing by the contractor. By the end of the works, all of the verge vegetation was removed to about 8m off the final pathway, and much of the topsoil was scraped off. Finally thick mulch was spread over the cleared area, which may prevent any of the native plants from regerminating. With support from the school, volunteers organised by Roleybushcare spent a morning scraping away over 10 large trailer loads of mulch, in the hope that some of the orchids, fungi, and seeds may remain and germinate this winter. The plan is that after seeing how much vegetation returns, the area will be replanted with trees, banksias, and bushes that used to be on the site. We have remarkable, undervalued, and unprotected natural heritage here in Roleystone. The reality is that only a small fraction of the original diversity will probably return to this verge. It will take hundreds of hours of volunteer time, as well as plant and machinery costs to rehabilitate the verge. If you are interested in helping out, contact Paul on 0400 521 184. The Second Bite Coles Community Connect Program works with Armadale Youth Resources to deliver nutritious and healthy fresh produce as well as bakery items to over 8 highly disadvantaged schools and community programs in the Armadale Area. In our first month, we delivered over 250 kilos of produce from our fantastic partners at Coles in Armadale, Seville Grove, and Kelmscott. We expect this to grow as Coles staff become more familiar with the program. The food which is only discarded because its no longer “shelf presentable” is selected by the produce and bakery managers after the questions “Would I eat it myself?” and “Will it last 48 hours?” are asked. Instead of going to landfill, the food gets delivered for use in school breakfast and lunch programs, cooking classes, community cooking classes and emergency relief. One school has a big cook-up once a week with parents, and the food is then frozen ready for use by school families who find themselves in crisis or with a big event on their hands, like a new baby in the house. We’ve found that lots of teachers were spending their own money on feeding students who simply were not getting breakfast, lunch or dinner otherwise. To keep the program running, we are looking for volunteers with a clean driving license to help us out for just two hours a week. Training is provided, as is a vehicle. We do food runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and we’d like volunteers to be available from 2-4pm. We are also looking for donations of working deep freezers to help the schools store items. National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community nature care event with thousands of people contributing to the natural environment on Sunday 29 July. The City is proud to support events which will see thousands of native trees and shrubs planted in local areas as part of this national celebration. “The City is renowned for its landscape and beautiful lush surroundings. National Tree Day is an opportunity for residents to physically contribute to the natural features which we, as residents, value the most,” said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones. Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group’s (AGLG) National Tree Day event will be held at the Urban Waterways site, Riverside Lane, Armadale from 9am to 12pm on Sunday 29 July. In just over 3 months time we will be holding our 6th annual “Girls on the Porch”, a fundraising event for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It will be held at 1pm, Sunday the 21st of October at Views 101 of Araluen Golf Resort, Roleystone. The tickets, which afford you high tea, a complimentary drink on arrival, and entry in the door prize raffle, will be $70 per person. Tickets for the fundraising event will start being sold in September at the Bendigo RK Community Bank, one of the many local businesses which have shown major support for “Girls on the Porch”. Tickets numbers are limited. This year the event will be a cash only event. As in previous years, we are again collecting old bras and swimwear to send to Project Uplift, so if you have any you would like to donate, please bring them along to the event. A prize will be awarded to the person with the largest amount of bras donated on the day. Should you be unable to attend, don’t worry about

By the newest kids on the block, a unique vocal group who are set to make quite the entrance with their debut concert this month. Naya Chorale, the recently founded brainchild of Martin local musician Adam Brockway and his business partner Jeremy de Vries-Turnell, is a choir that combines the considerable talents of 38 men and women of varying ages and experience, many of them graduates from specialised music programs at Perth Modern School and Churchlands Senior High School. Lead by their Conductor Adam Brockway, a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Naya Chorale’s music pushes the standard of choral music with its high quality, uplifting a cappella performances. Hannah Brockway, sister to Adam and proud member of Naya, has described the group’s repertoire as “fantastic - the kind of stuff that gives you goosebumps.” Other singers from Naya will tell you that the choir is fast-paced, challenging, and a thrill to be a part of. Adam himself commented, saying “Naya Chorale is the group I have always wanted to conduct.” While other more developed choirs in Perth are still grappling for singers (particularly male ones), Naya Chorale, only four months into its inaugural season, started out with a well-balanced group of nearly 40! And that’s just counting the one who made it through the auditions! “We had such an overwhelming response, it’s clear that a lot of musicians were looking for the same thing that we were” said the choir’s business
manager, Jeremy de Vries-Turnell. “The choir is open to anybody up for the challenge of performing powerful choral pieces, but in particular, we wanted to provide a group that students graduating from music schools could transition to. Graduating music students are looking for the next project to get involved in, so we aim to provide that.” Approximately six months after the serious Roleystone bush fire, Naya Chorale was the focus of a photo shoot in the hills of Martin, where scorched and blackened trees were already somehow sprouting fresh branches and leaves. Whilst the choir’s repertoire is by no means limited to Australian music, they still wished to show their cultural roots. “We liked the symbolism of having our new choir alongside the new green growth of the bush, and the energy and life that it embodies.” It’s quite a fitting image for a choir with the first name “Naya”, a Sanskrit name meaning freshness and renewal. Naya Chorale has plans to film a music video later this year, as well as to record several pieces for their debut album. Naya’s official unveiling will be at their debut concert on Saturday, July 28th at the John Curtin Theatre in Fremantle. Winter is a busy time on the Perth Eventing circuit and naturally, Rainbow Riding School is out and about in the thick of it. A crew of seven Rainbow riders and their horses entered the Kelmscott Pony Club Show Jumping, Dressage and In-hand Series three, on 17th June. Perfect weather, riders and ponies combined to make a fantastic day. Roleystone rider Aviv Cohen, 17 years old, came first riding Denny in their first ever 80cm show jumping round, placing third overall. Her good friend Hannah Woods, 15, rode instructor Cindy’s Bella to fourth place overall, after a lovely 1D Dressage test. Shannon Meakins, 11, rode Chantilly exactly to optimum time in both her 70cm and 80cm show jumping rounds, winning both events and placing second overall in both of her classes. A huge congratulations goes to our youngest rider Chelsea Bawden, 7, who rode Judaroo Lowri in her Eventing debut to take out second place overall in her 30cm class. Louise Woods, 13, took out fourth place overall riding Peppe in the heavily subscribed 60cm Show jumping/1C Dressage 11-14yo class. Overall, our Rainbow ponies recorded zero 478 faults for the day, painting a vivid picture of our love of jumping here at Rainbow. The following week, Rainbow Riding School entered five riders in Wallangarra Pony Club’s second One Day Event (ODE) for the year. Riders competed in Dressage, Cross Country and Show jumping across the day. Rainbow’s newest instructor, Cindy Black, showed the crew how it’s done by winning her open B grade (95cm) class on her super horse Bella. Shannon Meakins rode Chantilly over her first C Grade (85cm) class, taking out fourth place in a huge bracket. Emily Dagnall, 18, rode Denny in his first ever ODE, placing twelfth overall in the large E Grade (45cm) Mini Face Primer class. The Andrews family have resided in Roleystone for almost 25 years, and sent all of their children to the local Primary and District High School. On Saturday the 26th of May, 2012, Chris and Sue Andrews came together with about 25 other close family and friends to celebrate their daughter Shannon’s marriage to James Cook. The happy couple had the pleasure of taking their wedding vows at the stunning Ayana Resort in Jimbaran Bay Bali, and were luckily blessed with divine weather on the day. The event was definitely a family affair, with Shannon’s niece Chloe (currently attending Roleystone Community College) as flower girl. The Cooks and their guests dined on 7 courses at the open air reception, were entertained by traditional Balinese dancers and fire twirlers, and finished off the special evening with cocktails in the resort’s amazing “rock bar”. They went on to honeymoon in Maldives and Singapore.

Former Roleystone performer takes on Ibsen classic Former Roleystone Theatre performer Carmen Miles is taking to the stage this July in a theatre classic, Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Hedda Gabler’. The title character has often been referred to as the “female Hamlet” in theatre circles, given her strong and complicated nature, and an energy both attractive and destructive. Hedda chooses to marry a kind, bumbling academic but (even on her honeymoon), feels trapped in a world for which she feels only contempt, making her wonder what her chances are of fulfilling a life of passion unless she has the courage. Described as one of Ibsen’s most famous masterpieces, ‘Hedda Gabler’ was first performed in 1891, before becoming a major Broadway sensation in 1902, and winning Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Revival in 1992 and 2006. Miles plays the supporting role of Thea Elvsted, a caring and nurturing woman who’s character has been described by her portrayer as having “femininity that is kind of an antithesis to the character of Hedda”. Miles has said “Thea could quite easily be reduced to a one-dimensional character, if I didn’t think too much about the lines. I’m trying to go through the play and acknowledge the many complexities and nuances of Thea’s character, which Ibsen has subtly added.” Performing since she was 16 years old, Miles has appeared in numerous musicals with Roleystone Theatre and several plays at the Old Mill, Melville, Phoenix, KADS and Harbour Theatres. Her repertoire has included ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Emma’, ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes and the First English Gentleman’. Just last year, she won the Peter Kemeny Encouragement Award at Dramafest (the annual state drama festival), for her role in Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’. Miles has also been a character performer at Florida’s Walt Disney World, as part of Disney’s International College program,

In their first loss, the Tigers had practically no impact against a rampaging Osborne Park side, which had winners in nearly ever position on the field. The Park were eventual winners by 84 points. In the Reserves fixture, the Tigers had a good chance of winning the game, and took it right up to the home side despite being undermanned.

One of Shakespeare’s great comedies is being brought to life at Roleystone Theatre this July. Described as a joyous romp, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ celebrates brave soldiers returning triumphant from the battlefield, only to find themselves bewildered by love. It has been performed in a plethora of stage productions over the years, including a 2011 show featuring Doctor Who actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate. There have also been numerous television and film adaptions, such as the popular 1993 version, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and starring Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves and Kate Beckinsale. Roleystone Theatre Director Paul Treasure said ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is one of his favourite Shakespeare plays. “It always seems very modern,” he said. “The relationship between Beatrice and Benedick is one I have seen many times with people I know, and I love it. The play also has very strong and forthright female characters. Like all Shakespearean comedies, there are three or four different plots going on at the same time, but it’s primarily a play about two intelligent and witty people, and the way everyone else tries to get them together.” While people often think Shakespeare’s language as difficult, Treasure said it can be surprisingly easy for actors to breathe life into the words, simply because Shakespeare wrote for actors. “The main and most exciting challenge is going through the play with a fine toothcomb and finding all the little hints and suggestions that Shakespeaere has buried in there,” he said. “His plays can often be like a jigsaw or crossword.” Involved in theatre since 1989, Treasure has appeared in more than 100 productions, from
Aristophanes’ ‘Lysistrata’ through to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘By Jeeves’, with theatre companies including Marloo, Roleystone, Blak Yak, KADS, Kwinana, Garrick, Park, Pit and Acorn Theatres, and the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. He has been nominated three times for Best Director at the annual Finley Awards for his work in ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Little Women’, and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, and has also won awards for his acting roles. Treasure describes his production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ as “traditional but radical”. “Because the Kenneth Branagh version is one of the most beloved Shakespeare films, people forget the play is not set actually set in Tuscany, but in Sicily, which is on the complete opposite end of Italy”, he explained. “We are setting the play in Sicily as it was originally written, and since it’s rarely done this way, it makes this a radical interpretation. Also, because Shakespeare wrote only a few really good female characters, and we have so many good actresses, we have changed the gender of many roles. The town of Messina will now be a town devoid of any men, except the parish priest, because they have all gone off to fight in the civil war, making the returning soldiers the only male characters.” Much Ado About Nothing will play at 8pm on July 20th, 21st, 25th, 27th and 28th. With Kwinana’s oldest amateur theatre company taking its final bow after 43 years, Roleystone Theatre is one of several dramatic clubs around Perth to receive costumes, props and flats that would otherwise go to waste. Reduced membership, lack of volunteers, escalating performing rights fees and other associated costs took their toll on Kwinana Theatre Workshop, causing its unfortunate closure. “With the lack of volunteers, we were always struggling for help with set construction, lighting, sound, the cost of the lease,
overheads and the rights to put on shows,” president Pauline Lawrence said. “These amounts became too much with the lack of patronage, which has dwindled greatly over the years.” The award-winning club started in 1969 after a card was left in the window of local newsagents, calling for people interested in forming a theatre group. With only about six original members, they began holding drama workshops and rehearsals in each other’s homes, before hiring out the Medina Hall for their first performance of ‘The

I know the theatre had given her much joy over the years when she was involved. The Roleystone Musicians Club recently held their Ultimate Music Quiz Night. It was a fun musical night with heaps of prizes. A big thank you goes out to the Roleystone community for all their support. After a few successful years, the group was offered a house in Atkinson Road, which they transformed into a 64seat theatre, and performed in a style known as “in the round”. Over the years, Kwinana Theatre Workshop took part in many state drama festivals and won several Finley Awards, recognising the best production of the year for shows such as ‘Night Must Fall’, ‘Find Me’, ‘Too Far To Walk’ and ‘Deckchairs’. In 1990, Kwinana Theatre Workshop moved into the Koorliny Arts Centre, which State and Federal governments agreed to build with the proviso that the theatre would be involved in the building. Until recently, the theatre would perform five plays, one musical and a Christmas show each year, and had an average annual membership of about 80 to 90 people. Members built all the internal fittings, stage and flats for building sets, and suffered the major headache of sewing the original black curtains. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my position on the committee

Andrew Chinn Visit Tuesday the 3rd of July was a wonderful day of faith, fun and celebration for the school community at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott, when Australian singer and songwriter Andrew Chinn paid them a visit. The day began with a small group of students working with Andrew to compose a school song for Good Shepherd. The whole school contributed ideas from which Andrew will create the lyrics for the song. It was terrific to see so many parents at the concert, especially when some were brave enough to join in the singing and dancing! Recently the children of Good Shepherd welcomed a new addition to the school, a very cute baby goat of just 8 months, who will join the school’s much more senior goat Roger. The Assistant Principal, Mr David Tunchon gave all the children the job of naming the new goat, a process which all the classes participated in with much enthusiasm. Many great ideas were put forward, but the winning name came from the 3 year old Kindy class, who came up with the name ‘Mini-Me’, due to the striking resemblance between the baby goat and Roger. Mini-Me was generously donated by a family in Bindoon. Before

coming to Good Shepherd, Mini-Me spent a lot of time with the children in the family, so he probably thinks he’s in seventh heaven now, with a whole school of children to play with! He loves escaping from his enclosure and the highlight of his day is being led by children around the school on the lead. He is a well-fed goat, enjoying daily delicacies from the students lunchbox scraps, goat fodder and favourite gum leaves.
Once again proved to be a wonderful success for the Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School Community. After weeks of finding sponsors, students from Kindy to Year 6 walked distances from 2-5km around the streets of Kelmscott on Wednesday the 20th of June. As usual, the school walkathon was supported by local businesses and the school Parent Group, who donated prizes and morning tea for the participants. A range of prizes were available for every child in the school, with 3rd prize being an Ipod Shuffle, 2nd prize an Ipod Touch and 1st prize an Apple Ipad. These three prizes were won by Kylah Weeding, Benjaman McNamee and Michael O’Shea. All money raised will be used by the school to further provide resources and learning opportunities for the Good Shepherd children. This year we are fundraising for a new Early Childhood playground. The students, staff and parents would like to thank local businesses and the Parent Group for their support and encouragement during Walkathon 2012.

I joined the local Organic Growers, and after a year of living here, started to screen-print shirts and sell them at the Kalamunda Markets. I then started to search for organic cotton and Eco Peko was born. I originally started it as a babies clothing label, with organic cotton t-shirts emblazoned with sayings like “100% organic and natural, no pest inside”, and I later added bibs, pants and organic denim jeans to the stock. A year after I added my bamboodie (a bamboo hoodie - great for sun protection and first layers), which was received so well that I expanded from kids’ sizes to adult sizes as well. In the last year I have started a semi-formal range for bubs, kids and mums that is made from organic cotton and dyed with plants. I’ve also added some organic cotton leggings, which I’ll have an adult range for in Spring. Furthermore, I have also just added some messenger bags made from coffee bags. A couple of weeks ago, Eco Peko won Runner Up for Best Eco Label in the Australasian Kids Fashion Review Style Awards. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me! Eleven of us from Susan Angwin’s Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday art classes in Roleystone drove up to New Norcia for an extended weekend of inspiration, relaxation, and fun. We were very lucky to have dry weather the whole weekend, especially when those bursts of sunshine helped us capture an endless supply of subject matter. Susan made sure we had no shortage in inspiration, taking us around the Museum and Art Gallery and commenting on the religious and contemporary paintings to us. We also had the chance to go for a walk around the various Church properties on the site. As we strolled, Susan encouraged us to view the buildings and surrounding areas from a different perspective. We were shown how to look for shapes, colours, contrasts of light and shade, to see the effect of trees against the buildings, interesting decorative work and even a colourful group of oil barrels filled with cans and bottles. After, we had a coffee break, and then time to wander on our own and do some painting/drawing. We all met up later for the evening meal and a chat, which gave us a chance to get to know each other better. On Saturday morning we did more drawing, and got to see Susan’s excellent example of trees against the monastery wall in ink over a watercolour wash. We had a bit of a Faulty Towers moment during lunch at the hotel, when it turned out we could have pumpkin or minestrone
soup, but could only have minestrone after the pumpkin had run out. Unfortunately, it didn’t! In the afternoon we went down to the river, and although it was rather chilly and grey, some good work was still produced. Back at the hotel, we gathered for a look at each other’s work and some useful constructive comments from Susan. The evening certainly gave us our fill of relaxation and fun. We had our own private dining room, and after an excellent meal and a bottle or two of wine, we were entertained by Austin with fantastic guitar music and songs. Some very loud music and dancing soon followed, rounding out a great evening. Sunday was a glorious day, spent finding more inspiration as Susan took us on a tour of the hotel interior. Even a rumpled bed and stacked chairs in the bar were pointed out as possible subjects, and indeed some came to life when we went our separate ways for further drawing or painting. Late the next morning, we met up one more time to share and discuss our work, before packing up and heading back down to Perth. Altogether, it was an excellent weekend spent drawing and painting. It was an unforgettable experience that really fit into the concepts of inspiration, relaxation and fun. We can’t wait for the next weekend away! Dorothy Tingle.

Having a dog chained up or in a cage restricts the dog’s ability to live life properly and enjoyably, and could also lead to antisocial behaviour such as excessive barking. A Radio Pet Barrier set up around your property gives your dog the ability to roam the property freely whilst still keeping it safe, and less likely to destroy your garden. In the last issue we explained how a Radio Dog Fence works by creating the radio signal from the wire that surrounds the property, garden beds or gateways. The dog receives a mild “correction” from the receiver collar it wears upon close proximity to the wire. The correction is a static pulse, similar to what you get after rubbing your feet on the carpet and touching a metal door handle. You can adjust the levels on the collar to make training more comfortable for the dog, allowing them to learn to stay away from the radio signal and decide not to escape. Programmable levels will help train the dog slowly, and higher levels will help keep more determined dogs secure. All Radio Pet Barrier Dog Fences work in a similar fashion, but there are a few key things to look out for to ensure long lasting success. Each component that goes in to making up a Radio Dog Fence is critical, meaning that if even one item fails, the dog can escape and end up at the Vet or Pound. Power surges can damage the transmitter. A transformer or power plug with a “third earth pin” will protect the system from excess energy coming through the house’s main power, or back through the boundary wire. Look for a system that has full surge protection as well as a warranty that covers fusion damage to the circuit board. Lightning strikes can send damaging electrical surges through the boundary wire (which is often buried under driveways) and back to the circuit board on the transmitter. Again, the third earth pin on the transformer and a good warranty will protect the system from damage and stop the dog escaping.
Questions have been raised about the issue of radio signal interference, but not to worry! An FM radio frequency will not be interfered with by stray radio signals. The only likely situation in which signals may function is if two properties sharing a fence/property border have Radio Dog Fences on the same fence. The Warranty on the collar ensures that the product you buy will not only last you, but will also be readily replaced in the case of a malfunction. Dogs are tough and can test the durability of the collar. A long warranty that includes dog chewing shows how tough some collars can be. Keep an eye on the battery life of the collar, as rechargeable collars often need to be discarded after a year or so, since the batteries can’t be changed over. Remember to seek advice on which system is the best for your dog and your property. If the dog fence you choose to buy doesn’t work properly, you could end up going to the Vet. If so, then get your skates on and head to Hackett Hall from 10am on July 29th, for a chance to be in the WA premiere of the musical “The Rink”. Playlovers Theatre is looking for a variety of men and women aged from 18 to 50, as well as two girls aged 7 and up, to perform and sing in the production. Written by the team behind hits like “Chicago” and “Cabaret”, “The Rink” is set in a rundown rollerskating rink on the east coast of the US in the 1970’s. “It’s a story of forgiveness between a mother and daughter as they try to find a way of letting going of the past and moving into the future,” director Alida Chaney said. “This is a musical with many highs and lows.” Anyone who would like to audition will need to prepare a song of their choice that best showcases their vocal skills, and bring either sheet music or a backing track on a CD or iPod. “They will also be required to do a reading and perform a small dance routine, which the choreographer will teach them, so people should wear suitable, comfortable clothes and footwear,” Chaney said. “All the men and the little girl need to rollerskate in the show, and we’ll have an instructor to help with this in rehearsals. strain. The steep hill proved too much for the winch to pull the Cruiser up, so the decision was made to try to turn the car around and go back down the hill. With a little patience (and 5 grown men hanging off the sides as the Cruiser teetered on the slope) the car headed downhill, only to get hung up on the rear diff, lifting both tyres off the ground! Another short winch downhill and Shane finished tackling hills for the weekend. Our final night camping overlooked the dam from the pine forests, giving us all a great view. Harvey and Brunswick are really great places to have fun, tackling the challenging tracks. The best part of our trip by far was the company and laughter provided and shared by the great bunch of people who came together for a weekend away. We are all looking forward to the next weekend road trip in the forest tracks and hills. Julian Graziani.

On the WA Day long weekend in June, the WJ & KS Automotives extended family headed down to the forest tracks in and around Brunswick Junction and Harvey for a weekend of camping and four wheel driving. Saturday was spent exploring tracks, trails and some steep, slippery terrain which tested both our nerves and machines. The first serious uphill battle was made light work of by Wayne and Jo Van Uden in their mighty Patrol, which caused some shrieking when it lost control as it descended back down, sliding down until it rested on a mound at the bottom. To Wayne’s disbelief, Karel Foster drove up the hill just as easily in his Hilux, thanks to a secretly installed diff locker switch. Shane Plowman and Carly only got 10 metres up in their 79 series Cruiser before before sliding back down into the bank. John and Monique Andersen’s 80 Series Land Cruiser emulated Shane’s efforts, but made quite the mess when it reverse-slid into the bank, filling its exhaust pipe with mud. His next attempt splattered the mud everywhere in one big whoosh, making everyone laugh. After many more attempts at the hill (minus the lockers), the group moved on to other tracks. Camp was set up in the bush and food was prepared around the campfire, or “bush television”, as young Aerin and Lorien Graziani-Murray called it. Considering it was June, the weather was still quite comfortable, with sunny, rainless days. Sunday was another day of track-tackling, which was complicated by some deep slushy mud that Ned Amey’s 60 series Landcruiser (affectionately known and now re-plated as MUDWAGON) got into like a feral pig. The big surprise came when a hill attempted in the early morning proved an easy climb for the Hilux, 60 series, 79 series and 80 series, but was too much for the big Patrol, lockers and all. Julian’s Pajero couldn’t make it either, and we did not want to damage less equipped cars, like Jason Van Uden’s Ranger. That afternoon the crew drove back up the highway to the hills of Harvey to pursue more tracks. A certain hill in Harvey was conquered by foot first, then driven up by Karel in the Hilux, which made it look easy. Other cars made it up fine, but half-way up, Shane’s Cruiser only had rear-wheel drive, and promptly got stuck at a bad angle. The winch was brought out and attached to a small pine tree, which creaked and groaned under the
