Hagerstown Suns 35th Anniversary Season
T
he season-long anniversary celebration will bring some important parts of Suns history back to life, including highlighting some former Suns players who have made their mark in Hagerstown over the years. Fittingly, the promotional schedule kicks off on the night of the home opener on Thursday, April 16. Dane Anthony, who threw the first pitch in Hagerstown Suns history back in 1981, will be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Also that night there will be a ceremony in the beer garden as Antietam Brewery will be unveiling a special 35th anniversary brew and tap, which will be sold throughout the season. 2015 Magnet Schedules will be handed out to fans on opening night and throughout opening weekend, and on Friday and Saturday, April 17 & 18, the first 500 fans will receive a Suns specialty beer mug that they will be able to use throughout the season to receive discounts on beer. Also, on Saturday, April 18, the Suns players will debut their special 35th anniversary throwback jerseys sponsored by the Hagerstown Suns Fan Club, as well as throwback hats that were both designed to combine several looks of the past. These will be worn each Saturday home game, and live auctions will be held for both later in the season. Another alternate jersey the Suns will wear this season will be a camouflage jersey. This jersey will be worn for most Friday home games, as well as some of the military appreciation games. In total there will be three bobbleheads given away during the 2015 season. The first bobblehead will be handed out on Saturday, June 13, and will feature former Suns pitcher Mike Mussina. On Saturday, July 25, a Dane Anthony bobblehead will be handed out to the first 1,000 fans. The final bobblehead giveaway of the year will take place on Saturday, August 22, and is presented by the Hagerstown-Washington County CVB. That bobblehead will be revealed at a later date. Bobbleheads aren’t the only items that fans will get to take home from a game at Municipal Stadium this season. Other giveaway items include a poster with various program covers from previous seasons, a special 35th anniversary logo hat, a pink mini-bat key chain as part of pink weekend, a poster with various baseball cards of Suns players from previous years, and a Suns logo baseball. Many of the Suns traditional weekly promotions will be back this season as well, 4 A PR IL 2015
including “Thirsty Thursday,” “Eats for Seats Tuesday,” and “Sunday Funday.” In addition, there will be new weekly promotions on Monday and Wednesday. Every Monday home game will be a “Mega Monday,” when fans will have the opportunity to purchase four GA tickets loaded with $5 each to be used in the stadium for a total of $40 (a $16 savings). Or, fans on Mondays can purchase a single loaded GA ticket for a discounted price. The majority of Wednesday home games will be “Guaranteed WinsDay,” which means if the Suns don’t win on that particular Wednesday all fans in attendance will receive a free ticket to the next Wednesday home game. As is custom at Municipal Stadium, there will be Fireworks shows throughout the season as well. The first one will take place following the game on Friday, May 15. In total there will be nine Fireworks shows throughout the season, and all of them will be on Friday nights. New in 2015 will be theme nights to go along with each “Thirsty Thursday” game. The first theme will be college night on April 30. Additional themes include country night, ladies night, golf night, 80’s night, and 90’s night. For some theme nights, fans who dress up in that night’s theme will receive a discounted GA ticket. Details on specific theme nights are on the promotions page of the Suns website. Another new promotion in 2015 will be the “Weekday Matinee” for four weekday games (May 4, June 3, August 5, Sept. 2), which begin at 1:05pm. Fans can get tickets to these matinee games for just $5 or $7. Additional special events taking place this season will include two Education Days, four Antietam Cable Date Nights, a college fair, four Nora Roberts Reading Challenge games, and five military appreciation games. In July, there will be Craft Brew night, Kids night, a movie night, Christmas in July and Camp Day. Additional special events include First Responders night and Teacher and School Staff Appreciation night. Lastly, the Suns organization will be hosting an inaugural Beer Tasting Festival, which will take place on Saturday, June 27 from 3–7 pm. There is no game that day as the Suns will be away on the road. Tickets are already on sale. For more information on all of the promotions and giveaways throughout the 2015 season and to reserve your seats at Municipal Stadium, call 301-791-6266, or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com. The VALLEY R ev u e
pring in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air, both figuratively and literally. The warm breezes carry with them the sweet perfume of flowers crowded in boxwood gardens in the colonial towns. The lush green of the rolling countryside provides the perfect backdrop for orchards resplendent with the delicate pink and white of apple blossoms. We invite you and your family to share in our celebration of springtime by attending the 88th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® in Winchester, Virginia from April 24th – May 3rd. During the Festival, Winchester residents open their doors to tens of thousands of new guests and old friends who gather in this All-America Community for the traditional celebration of a promising apple crop. From the pomp and pageantry of the Queen’s Coronation to the mechanized wonder of the Firefighters’ Parade; from the glitter and glow of our tremendous Fireworks Show to the serene beauty of the floats in our Grand Feature Parade, the Festival has something for the entire family. Carnival; midways; footraces; dinners; dances; displays; shows: Make plans for your family to be part of the fun at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, our 88th Anniversary! For additional information call 540-662-3863 or go to www.TheBloom.com for a complete schedule of events.

pril 1865 was a time of relief, as four years of bloody war finally came to an end, and jubilation as emancipation became the law of the land. Maryland’s Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area will commemorate the 150th anniversary of these monumental events. A complete calendar of events is available at www.heartofthecivilwar.org. Highlights include: Civil War Trails Marker Dedication at Gathland State Park Tuesday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. 900 Arnoldstown Road, Burkittsville Nineteenth century literary luminary George Alfred Townsend, who published The Life, Crime, and Capture of John Wilkes Booth, lived at this South Mountain estate until his death in 1914. Written by Saul Levitt April 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, & 26 As told by Chapman from the NY Daily News: “Wirz, a Swiss immigrant and a doctor….had been put in command of this military prison….Wirz testified at his trial, a hundred men died there each day…Torn by awful memories and coldly pursued by his prosecutor he [Wirz] maintains that he ran Andersonville as a soldier acting under superior orders.” The crux of this stirring play raises the question of when the responsibility of the individual to his conscience transcends any power or authority. www.apollo-theatre.org
