New Year’s Eve Celebration Dec. 31•9pm-1am w/ The Flashbacks

he warm mineral waters of Berkeley Springs have drawn visitors over the centuries from Native Americans to colonial notables like George Washington to today's travelers looking for stress relief and a quirky respite from daily routine. The waters flow at a constant 74 degrees in a small state park in the heart of the historic town. They are freely available for the taking from a public tap or for wading in the largest open display of spring waters in the Blue Ridge. A thriving spa community has grown up around the springs. Berkeley Springs boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers with a menu of more than 50 cutting edge spa treatments available daily to 21st century health seekers. Wander charming and peaceful streets in the National Historic District within the 1776 town boundaries around the springs and indulge in all the pleasures of a nationally recognized art town from distinctive shops, galleries and antique malls to fine dining restaurants. Whether you are captivated by the vintage movie house or the Victorian castle on a hill overlooking the town or the Sunday Farmers Market, there is no mistaking Berkeley Springs for someplace else.

It's an easy drive or motorcycle ride into the West Virginia mountain wilderness that surrounds the town. There you can find spectacular views and outdoor fun including golf, hiking, biking, hunting and swimming in season. With year 'round festivals that celebrate everything from water to apple butter to quilts, something is always happening. Lace curtains or log cabins, in town or along a forested ridge, with or without pets, there's a perfect place for everyone at a price you can afford. T h E VA L L EY R E v uE

ou’re invited to celebrate the splendor of the holiday season with self-guided tours of historic houses of worship in two cities— Frederick and Hagerstown—on December 26. Visitors can step inside 20 churches within a five-block radius of Hagerstown’s City Square and 12 sites in downtown Frederick. Festooned with traditional decorations and illuminated by candlelight, there is no better time of year to visit. Live music, hot refreshments, and architectural guides offer something for everyone. Many of the participating houses of worship served as Civil War hospitals following the Maryland Campaign of 1862. After intense fighting in three gaps along South Mountain on September 14, 1862, and then the bloodiest one-day battle in American history at Antietam on September 17, towns like Frederick and Hagerstown became “one vast hospital” for wounded soldiers. While some were treated on the battlefields www.vall ey rev ue .co m

HERITAGE AREA

heartofthecivilwar.org or in tents just outside them, many were transported by rail or in wagons on the few roads paved with macadam (crushed gravel) to these two closest cities. Soldiers convalesced in privately owned homes and barns as well as community institutions, such as churches and schools. Many churches had to halt worship services during the winter of 1862-3 as the pews had been converted to accommodate hospital beds. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the houses of worship tour in Frederick, which will run from 4:009:00 PM on Monday, December 26. The Hagerstown tour will take place between 3:00-7:00 PM and includes a shuttle from the Visitor Welcome Center. Learn more about both tours at www.heartofthecivilwar.org. D E CE M B E R 2 016
