Lifestyle Estate Planning

Ensuring Your Final Documents Are Legal and Accurate Publisher’s Note: My mother passed away in October 2015 and as her personal representative, I am still working through finalizing her estate. My goal in sharing this information is to encourage you to consult with an attorney on your final wishes. The consequences of not doing so could create legal issues that make losing you more difficult for your family. In our case, my mother was in a nursing home for several years, and her lack of mobility made it difficult to get her to a lawyer’s office. The fact that she was in Florida and we are in Maryland compounded that issue. We chose to use an online service to update her will (bad move!) and

consequently had her sign along with two witnesses when we visited during spring break. What we all thought were logical decisions in regards to her wishes for her assets, turned into a legal nightmare that cost thousands of dollars to rectify. Had we consulted with a Florida attorney, knowledgeable in the specifics of that state, the process of finalizing her estate would have been much less painful and way less expensive. The one plus side is we have been motivated to seek legal counsel to ensure our heirs will not have the same problems. If you live in Maryland, I recommend Scott McDaniel (see below). –Cecilia “Cis” Rhyne

riting a will can be a foreboding thought – no one is eager to face what’s inevitable. Consulting with an attorney from your state will ensure a smooth process for both you now and your family later. An attorney whose practice is broad but includes simple estate planning and probate matters will work; however, if you have a complicated family or financial situation or a taxable estate, it is recommended that you work with someone whose primary focus is estate planning. One online source to find an attorney in your area is www.lawyers.com. You can search by specialty, city, state, etc. Discuss the costs and your budget with the attorney when

you initially meet. Some will offer a free consultation. Generally, estate planning attorneys charge a fixed fee for most, if not all, of their services. The attorney will guide you through the process to ensure your final documents are prepared properly. Be aware that each state has different laws when it comes to writing wills and planning estates. While states each have their own laws regarding validity of a will, they still have some common requirements. In general, a testator, or someone who has made a will, must be at least 18 or older to create a valid will. They must also be of “sound mind” and “legally competent.” A will should detail continued on page 15

Your attorney will ensure compliance to the specifics of your states’s requirements in all these matters. Preparing for the inevitable and sharing your wishes with your immediate family are important steps – whether you are a senior or young, have much to pass on or just a little. The consequences of not having a will – or sidestepping the correct legal processes – could be devastating to your family in their time of grief.

Northwood Books brings art to downtown Chambersburg by Katie Pryor

Northwood Books over 8 miles of rare used and new books 59 North Main Street Chambersburg, PA 717-267-0606 • Literature • Collector Editions • Easton Press Hours: Tue-Sat 10-5

northwoodbooks.com iterary characters Lcontained cannot be within the pages of the books at Northwood Books. They also come to life in the alleyway on the side of the store as part of a downtown Chambersburg mural project. Northwood Books, located at 59 North Main St., has been a family owned and operated business since 1988. It is the home of over 90,000 books and 70 genres. Ami Plessinger, who has owned the store since 2006, states that about 60 percent of their customers are from out of town. “Bookstores are still a destination point for people because there are treasures here that you can’t find anywhere else,” she says. “We’ve had people from all over come here, such as Ireland, Scotland and Australia, and I’ve visited England several times to find books. There is so much knowledge and education gained and it doesn’t even feel like work to me.” Along with several other businesses in Chambersburg, Northwood Books has been participating in the Chambersburg Community Mural Project to help revitalize the downtown Chambersburg area. This summer, Downtown Chambersburg, Inc. (DCI) partnered with local art enthusiasts to bring the art of Isaiah Zagar to Chambersburg. Zagar, a mural-mosaic artist based in Philadelphia, is working with community volunteers to install two large-scale murals on Main Street in Chambersburg. Plessinger and her husband, Dwain, purchased the store from the former owners, Jack and Evadell Staley. During renovation, they discovered false walls and tunnels that connected to other parts of Chambersburg, which were used by slaves on the journey to freedom in the Underground Railroad. “Believe it or not, 30 n ov emB eR 2016

Chambersburg was the only northern town burnt by the South during the Civil War,” states Plessinger. Literature is apparent in every corner of the bookstore. Along with the many shelves of books, there are also several references to different books and stories throughout the store. As guests enter, they will see the Wicked Witch of the East’s legs peeking out from underneath a box under a table of books. Other references throughout the store include a small Bird Girl statue from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” in the mystery section and the green curtains Scarlet O’Hara used to make a dress in “Gone With the Wind.” Northwood Books drew inspiration from the pages of books for their murals, which can be found on the side of the store. Their silhouette murals include Sherlock Holmes on the trail of the store’s miniature schnauzer Peti, the Headless Horseman from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, Cinderella’s carriage, a Jane Austen character sitting under a tree and Tinkerbell from “Peter Pan.” These murals were painted and funded by the Plessinger family and were completed at the same time other art events were coordinated. Holly Baker Strayer, an art teacher at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, has taught her art students about Zagar and his work transforming Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. Strayer invited Zagar to Chambersburg to do two murals. On July 16, Zagar and local volunteers began work on the mural on a Main Street Deli building at 33 N. Main St. and a mural on The Foundry building 100 S. Main St. DCI launched a fundraiser on gofundme.com to raise $20,000 to pay for the two murals. The campaign raised more than $24,000 in less than a month after the launch. “The Chamber of Commerce has done a great job revitalizing the downtown area and bringing in new business,” says Plessinger. “Through this project, we hope to draw even more people and business here.” The VALLEY R ev u e

Winter Lights and Lore in the Heart of the Civil War

HERITAGE AREA

W

hen December rolls around and the Christmas crowds rally to their ice skating rinks and tree lightings, opt for the road less traveled. Step back in time with these Heritage Area events perfect for a historical holiday weekend – and start a tradition for years to come. Kick off the festivities with the Civil War Encampment. Living historians will camp on the grounds of the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster to recreate how troops celebrated holidays during the war. Highlights include a pay muster, mail call, infantry drill and skirmish, while children are invited to make ornaments onsite to decorate the camp Christmas tree. Devoid of the neon bells and whistles that accompany most Christmas light displays, the Antietam National Battlefield memorial illumination is a beautifully haunting tribute. Volunteers place more than 23,000 candles on the battlefield to represent each casualty from the battle on September 17, 1862. Visitors can dedicate individual luminary bags at the Newcomer House for their own loved ones serving in the military. Check out the Traditional Village Christmas in Catoctin Furnace. Enjoy hot mulled wine, apple cider and heirloom-recipe baked goods to keep www.vall ey rev ue .co m

you warm in the chilly weather. The kids can enjoy decorating wreaths and making ornaments – and don’t miss Kris Kringling, the costumed yuletide tradition of dancing, singing and eating! After enjoying 19th century Christmas celebrations in Maryland, cross the Potomac River to find a host of holiday events including Christmas in Shepherdstown. The celebration will include a parade, living history reenactments, children’s activities and programs held at back on the Maryland side of the river at Ferry Hill Plantation. Nearby, Old Tyme Christmas in Harpers Ferry will be outfitted with live entertainment and children’s activities including a Victorian candy-making workshop and the exciting reenactment “Captain Flagg’s US Quartermaster City, 1864: Prospects of Peace.” Become a part of history and plan your visit to Heritage area for the first weekend in December!
