pring in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air, both figuratively and literally. The warm breezes carry with them the sweet perfume of flowers crowded in boxwood gardens in the colonial towns. The lush green of the rolling countryside provides the perfect backdrop for orchards resplendent with the delicate pink and white of apple blossoms. We invite you and your family to share in our celebration of springtime by attending the 90th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® in Winchester, Virginia from April 28th – May 7th. During the Festival, Winchester residents open their doors to tens of thousands of new guests and old friends who gather in this All-America Community for the traditional celebration of a promising apple crop. From the pomp and pageantry of the Queen’s Coronation to the mechanized wonder of the Firefighters’ Parade; from the glitter and glow of our tremendous Fireworks Show to the serene beauty of the floats in our Grand Feature Parade, the Festival has something for the entire family. Carnival; midways; footraces; dinners; dances; displays; shows: Make plans for your family to be part of the fun at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, our 90th Anniversary! For additional information call 540-662-3863 or go to www.TheBloom.com for a complete schedule of events.

pril is National Poetry Month, a great time to take a fresh look at the Ballad of Barbara Frietchie. Written in 1863 by John Greenleaf Whittier, the poem recalls the story of an elderly woman who waved an American flag before Confederate troops marching through Frederick in 1862—an event which historians have not been able to confirm. The poem’s heroine pleads, “Shoot if you must, this old gray head/But spare your country’s flag.” Whittier was a part of a circle of “Fireside Poets”— so-called because families read their words while sitting around the fire. The group included William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., who came to the area searching for his wounded son after the Battle of Antietam. They used their art to share folklore alongside contemporary politics, often suggesting a call to action. www.va l l ey rev u e . co m
Anti-slavery sentiments and staunch unionism sparked inspiration for these bards. While Whittier likely romanticized actual events in his poem, Barbara Fritchie did experience a significant chapter of history in Frederick from 1766 to 1862. One of her neighbors on the National Road (Patrick Street), Mary Quantrill, displayed a large Union flag on her porch on September 10, 1862. Quantrill, like other women during the war, used the flag’s symbolism to express her discontent with “the passing horde” of Confederates. These daring actions were immortalized through Whittier’s poem—along with some artistic liberties. Visit barbarafritchie.org to see a new documentary about Fritchie and learn about her reconstructed home along Carroll Creek, open most Sundays from May through August. APRIL 2017

he warm mineral waters of Berkeley Springs have drawn visitors over the centuries from Native Americans to colonial notables like George Washington to today's travelers looking for stress relief and a quirky respite from daily routine. The waters flow at a constant 74 degrees in a small state park in the heart of the historic town. They are freely available for the taking from a public tap or for wading in the largest open display of spring waters in the Blue Ridge. A thriving spa community has grown up around the springs. Berkeley Springs boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers with a menu of more than 50 cutting edge spa treatments available daily to 21st century health seekers.
