The Mid-Atlantic Region’s Newest Arts Destination Prepares For Another Year of Success
Photos and article provided by Mainstreet Waynesboro, Inc.
I
t started as one man’s vision in the spring of 2013. Before the end of the year, that vision was referred to as the “greatest thing to happen to our downtown in 30 years.” The Destination ARTS! initiative launched last July in the town of Waynesboro, Pa. For three months, seven vacant storefronts were transformed into full-scale art galleries, each of which was open every weekend. During that time, thousands of people came to Main Street to examine an impressive assortment of paintings, pottery and other works of art. “Many artists who we asked to participate in this project jumped at the opportunity,” explains Andrew Sussman, creator of Destination ARTS! “People who grew up in Waynesboro were happy to have their paintings hang in the ‘Homegrown Gallery,’ but we also had prominent artists from across the Mid-Atlantic region submit pricier options that can be seen in bigger cities.” The galleries were staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, who greeted guests as they entered and sold artwork to anyone interested. Performing artists also played an important part in bringing attention to all that Waynesboro has to offer. Live
music could be heard on the sidewalk each weekend. Because the initiative was so successful, organizers are planning another 15 weeks of Destination ARTS! in downtown Waynesboro. This year’s version kicks off on the evening of Friday, June 27, and a full-slate of artwork and entertainment is already lined up for opening weekend. Sussman says there will likely be fewer galleries open this summer, but that’s a “good problem.” Each of the seven vacant storefronts used last year now have permanent tenants. “Downtown Waynesboro is highlighted by unique architecture, fascinating history, fine dining and a pair of candy stores where mouthwatering chocolates are made. But, now, the town has also been transformed into an arts destination, and we invite you to come see what the buzz is all about.”

he warm mineral waters of Berkeley Springs have drawn visitors over the centuries from Native Americans to colonial notables like George Washington to today's travelers looking for stress relief and a quirky respite from daily routine. The waters flow at a constant 74 degrees in a small state park in the heart of the historic town. They are freely available for the taking from a public tap or for wading in the largest open display of spring waters in the Blue Ridge. A thriving spa community has grown up around the springs. Berkeley Springs boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers with a menu of more than 50 cutting edge spa treatments available daily to 21st century health seekers. Wander charming and peaceful streets in the National Historic District within the 1776 town boundaries around the springs and indulge in all the pleasures of a nationally recognized art town from distinctive shops, galleries and antique malls to fine dining restaurants. Whether you are captivated by the vintage movie house or the Victorian castle on a hill overlooking the town or the Sunday Farmers Market, there is no mistaking Berkeley Springs for someplace else. It's an easy drive or motorcycle ride into the West Virginia mountain wilderness that surrounds the town. There you can find spectacular views and outdoor fun including golf, hiking, biking, hunting and swimming in season. With year 'round festivals that celebrate everything from water to apple butter to quilts, something is always happening. Lace curtains or log cabins, in town or along a forested ridge, with or without pets, there's a perfect place for everyone at a price you can afford. T h E VA L L EY r E v UE
