We’re conveniently located in the arts district section of downtown Hagerstown, Maryland. Restaurants, after hours parties, and all venues are all within walking distance. 28 South will host Friday night’s after party, Gourmet Goat will host Saturday’s and Bulls and Bears will host closing night festivities!

We will host a pre-party at 5:30pm with “The Walking Dead” actress ANN MANONEY and “Terminator Genisys” actress KERRY CAHILL. Followed by a red carpet and screening. The after party will be at 28 South! Tickets for opening night are $25 and includes celebrity pre-party and screening! The festival continues with films showing simultaneously at other venues. The venues include The Maryland Theatre, Academy Theatre, Bridge of Life and Washington County Free Library.

ACTING CLASSES Two classes will be offered in Frederick, MD on March 30th at Tuscarora High School Cafeteria. Aspen Hall 405 Boyd Ave., Martinsburg. Nestled on seven park-like acres on a stocked trout stream and built of native limestone, this elegant mansion, circa 1750, is one of the most historic homes in our area. Many of the original features of the 22-room house remain. The farmstead was known as “Mendenhall’s Fort” during the French & Indian War which started 250 years ago. The rare blockhouse from this period is still standing. George Washington attended a wedding at Mendenhall’s Mill in 1761.

Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker. Located S of Greencastle. t this year’s end-of-season party for volunteer docents at the Newcomer House on the Antietam Battlefield, we heard from person after person, “I believe I get more from this than you,” and that’s music to any volunteer coordinator’s ears. Sure, we want to have our important historic sites open to the public as much as possible and volunteers are often key to making that happen, but we want there to be a mutual benefit in the relationship – and there is. How fortunate that, by their very nature, volunteers gravitate to places and causes that already hold an interest to them. Others are looking for ways to help their communities or fill a social void left by retirement. The reasons we volunteer are as myriad as our individual personalities. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, in 2014, 62.8 million people volunteered over 8 BILLION hours in houses of worship, schools, medical 46 M ARC H 2 016

facilities, basically everywhere. Volunteers are literally the life blood (think Red Cross blood drives) of our country. The economic value of those 8 billion hours is about $177 billion! It is highly likely that you interact with a volunteer at least once every day. It is also likely that 25% of people reading this article are either volunteers or are considering becoming a volunteer. Happily, there are ample opportunities for folks like you in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. One of those dynamic places is the Newcomer House on the Antietam Battlefield, which serves as the exhibit and visitor center for the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. It is staffed completely by volunteers during April through November. We are currently seeking more volunteers for the 2016 season. While no specific knowledge or skills are required, a willingness to deal with the public in a cordial T H e VA L L EY R e V Ue

manner is a must and interest in Civil War history is a plus. Volunteers will receive mentor training on-site during regular visitor hours. A volunteer’s primary duty is to greet visitors as they enter the Newcomer House exhibit and visitors center, and help orient them to the immediate area and opportunities in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. Newcomer House volunteers also receive opportunities for special programs and tours. This year’s orientation session is scheduled for Saturday, March 19 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; lunch is provided. Volunteers will be invited to take a tour of three sites in the Heritage Area on Wednesday, April 6. Another added benefit is that, through a cooperative agreement with the Antietam National Battlefield, Newcomer Volunteers are part of the National Park Service Volunteer Corps, which is especially exciting during this, the www.vall ey rev ue .co m

NPS’s Centennial Year. The Newcomer House was built in the 1780s as part of a thriving mill complex and farm astride the Boonsboro Pike where the Middle Bridge spans Antietam Creek. The house gets its present-day name from Joshua Newcomer, who owned the property during the 1862 Battle of Antietam. This is the period to which the appearance of the house has been restored. The Newcomer House, at 18422 Shepherdstown Pike in Sharpsburg, is one of only two historic homes on the battlefield open to the public. The other is Pry House Field Hospital Museum. Three exhibit rooms explore the major themes of the heritage area: In the Heat of Battle, On the Home Front and Beyond the Battlefield.
