Studio Instruction Studio Instruction

vcm.bc.ca/prospective-students Studio instruction is one of the most popular things we offer. Regardless of your age, level, or instrument, we can find you a teacher that will inspire you to find your individual creative voice. With over 110 faculty members, the VCM will have you playing your best in no time! Whether you sign up for individual or shared* lessons, even more instruments and subjects are now available through our three schools: • The Ann and George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music • The Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music • School of Music Technology and Creativity The first step towards starting your lessons is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. To do this, we ask that you fill out a referral form. It takes about five minutes to complete the form, which you can do online at vcm.bc.ca/student-referral-form, by phone, or in person. We’ll ask you some basic information, including your contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited to your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or “trial” lesson. * Shared lessons: “build your own group” (to a maximum of 3) is an option offered by most of our faculty, and a great way to share an hour of instruction between 2 to 3 beginners, be it siblings, relatives, or neighbours!

Tuition Studio instruction falls into four Fee Groups, ranging from $49.80 to $79.80 per hour, depending on the instructor.

Students typically register for 36 lessons per year (18 each term). However, in consultation with your teacher, you may register for more or fewer. While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available through the summer. Chamber Music and Band/Combo Coaching Playing together as a chamber music ensemble, a jazz combo, or contemporary band is an exciting way to meet new friends, and have a chance to work with one of the VCMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experienced faculty on a regular basis, or as needed, to hone skills, perfect repertoire (set lists), and perform together in public. Opportunities include performing as part of student concerts at the VCM, or through one of the many requests the VCM regularly receives for student performers in the community. The Orff Program Birth - 9 years

Offered Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. A creative, multi-sensory experience, Orff music education is conceptual, child-centred, and non-competitive. Classes embrace many facets of music education in an atmosphere of fun and discovery. Music concepts are taught using speech, story-telling, drama, bodypercussion, dance and creative movement, instrumental play, improvisation, and composition. Infants, Toddlers & Pre-schoolers This new program stimulates awareness of musical sounds, inspiring creative moments and an early love for music. The age-specific, sequenced curriculum explores musical sound in many ways: high and low, soft and loud, slow and fast, and everything in-between! Other musical fundamentals such as rhythm, pulse, phrasing, and instrumental colours will be introduced in a fun way. Each class involves a lively mix of singing, dancing and other movement, as well as playing on instruments. Based on the Kodaly approach to music education, this is the first step into formal music education and moves students into independent music making. Singing in unison allows children to learn how to listen and tune in a group, and to begin exploring tonality. Studio Instruction (Early Childhood Methodologies) Private lessons may be taken individually or shared among 2 or 3 students. Lessons range in price from $49.80 to $79.80 per hour with a minimum of 15 minutes per week. The following are just a few of our individual lesson offerings, using methodologies tailored specifically to young children. Lessons aren’t just for children - we offer individual lessons in a variety of genres on just about every instrument. This simple, fun approach to music is designed to capture the imagination of the young child. Ear-training, sight-reading, and piano playing are taught from the very first lesson. Colouring, stickers and singing are incorporated into this note-reading method to compliment musical elements. Kelly Kirby is offered as individual or shared studio instruction. Based on the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki - the “mother tongue” method - that talent is not inborn, it has to be cultivated within a supportive environment. Children learn to play by ear through repeated listening and immersion in a musical environment. Note-reading is taught once the ear is sufficiently developed and piano technique is secure. String Lessons for Children

Children can begin a string instrument as young as 3 years old. At the VCM, students and parents can choose between Traditional and Suzuki teaching methods. Both methods have tremendous merit and instill the joy of music, build confidence, and improve cognitive skills. Allow us to help you find the method that best suits you or your child.

Traditional Strings Method

Suzuki Group Schedule

Beginner students typically begin with 30 minute private lessons. Each teacher uses a variety of materials; instruction can be tailored for each individual student. Most students immediately begin learning note and rhythm reading, technical skills such as scales, musical terms, and ear training skills. Student progress can be measured in a number of ways. The Royal Conservatory of Music offers a guide through grades 1-10 including yearly exams and theory and ear training components in later years. Students may also gauge their progress through a variety of performance opportunities. Instructor and String Department masterclasses are open to all students on a weekly basis. Instructors may organize their own periodic recitals.

Suzuki Violin and Cello The Suzuki method is taught through listening, repetition, positive reinforcement and gentle yet specific guidance. Individual instruction is tailored to each student’s ability level and develops technique, focus, posture, tone and much more. Group classes are designed to polish skills in a fun, interactive way while building interpersonal skills, community, a sense of teamwork and leadership, confidence, listening skills, and so much more! Paired together, individual and group classes create strong building blocks for successful, happy and skilled players. Level 2: Minuet through Book 2

Expanding on Level 1 concepts, pieces of “nonSuzuki” repertoire are introduced, exploring harmony, improvisation, music theory & history and preparing students to enter the introductory VCM orchestra in the following year. Students are encouraged to attend the same group class throughout the term, however, registered students may ‘drop-in’ to an alternate section occasionally to accommodate classes missed due to illness, family schedule conflicts, etc.

vcm.bc.ca/contemporary /classical-music To ensure continuity, ensembles are full-year courses. New members are welcome to join ensembles mid-year with the instructor’s permission, in which case tuition will be prorated. Adult participants are welcome in all VCM performing groups, which include string orchestras, choirs, wind ensembles, contemporary ensembles and bands, jazz combos, and various small chamber groups. Students enrolled in private lessons at the VCM receive 15% off select ensemble tuition. You can register for all group classes and ensembles online!

Large Contemporary Ensemble

Youth and Adult Rock Bands Participants work together to develop the chops needed to bring it live on-stage as rock musicians. With one of Victoria’s leading rock guitarists and producers, weekly sessions include working through rock hits and standards while allowing each performer’s talent to emerge and playing skills to steadily improve. First Level String Orchestra

Dozens of young fiddlers, many of whom are now professional musicians, learned the art of fiddling during their apprenticeship with the BCFO which exposes students to styles and genres from around the world. Music theory is the language of music – an essential part of musical training. The School of Music Technology and Creativity offers individual and shared lessons, as well as group classes, for all ages and all levels of music theory and composition including Rudiments, Harmony, Counterpoint, Analysis, Musicianship and Music History. Learning how music is created and notated, and knowing how to listen and appreciate all that lies beneath the notes on the paper, is a fundamental part to the development of any well rounded musician. We make it easy and fun to learn, and the benefits speak for themselves. VCM theory classes are designed to encourage students to relate theoretical concepts to the actual sound of the music. Music listening, history and musical style is an integral part of our theory classes and students will be encouraged to keep up with ear-training co-requisites. Melody writing and composition are introduced at every level. Harmony and Counterpoint are offered as private or shared private lessons and classes can be arranged according to student’s needs. Many of the classes listed below comprise a full year 32-week curriculum, culminating with the spring RCM theory examination session, which typically occurs during the second weekend (Friday and Saturday) in May. Theory classes are comprised of 4 to 12 students. Extra sections will be added as enrolment requires. In cases where there are fewer than three students registered for a class, a shared studio lesson will be arranged by the instructor. While our classes prepare students for RCM examination, the exams are not registered through or administered by VCM. Artistic Director: Michael van der Sloot, mvandersloot@me.com Animateur: Micki Stirling, stirling@vcm.bc.ca Voice Program: Ingrid Attrot, sops@shaw.ca Founded in 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities. There are four categories of membership - all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level. Full members are usually between the ages of 13 and 18, and have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally RCM Grade 9 or above. They participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists. Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. They generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium. Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership. Post-Secondary Associates: registered through Camosun as well as through the Collegium, they are expected to participate in all chamber music activities.

Collegium Program

New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available.

Tuition fees The VCM is committed to making this special program available to students who can most benefit from it. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study - in the case of full members by over 50% - through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the VCM itself. NOTE: Collegium Tuition is quoted and payable on a per term basis but students are expected to commit for the full academic year (two terms: September – January and January – May). Full Membership: $1,276.80 per term, after scholarship • 16 one-hour lessons per term • Weekly chamber music rehearsals and coaching • Regular masterclasses with local and visiting musicians (accompanist provided) • Soundings: occasional seminars led by invited guests where aspects of music are discussed • Performance opportunities at the VCM and elsewhere • Credit of $100 per term towards theory, history, or composition instruction taken at VCM. • Services of an accompanist during master classes when required; non-pianists pay an additional (subsidized) fee of $120 per term and receive a scheduled half-hour session with their assigned accompanist once every two weeks. Associate Membership: $395 per term The fee paid by Associate members covers a portion of the cost of their chamber music instruction. Associate members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors. Masterclasses A masterclass is a seminar for music students conducted by a master musician or clinician. Classes focus on repertoire, technique, and performance skills. Typically each student who attends plays a performance-ready piece and, in turn, listens while others play. The “master” will offer advice and guidance to the performer and to the group as a whole, often focusing on one or two performance aspects. Masterclasses, which are often free for currently registered VCM students, offer the opportunity to learn from other VCM instructors, special guests, and each other. Non-VCM students may also take part for a drop-in fee. In addition to regular masterclasses in each department offered by a rotating roster of VCM faculty, past guests have included Jamie Parker, James Ehnes, Pepe Romero, Daniel Taylor, and many more.

A library of over 70,000 titles is maintained at the VCM for the use of faculty and registered students. The resources include music for all instruments, reference materials and books on music, including biographies. There is also an extensive collection of recordings that can be borrowed. The library is also home to the Student Lounge, a place to study, relax, and take a quick lunch break between classes. This sought-after program provides comprehensive training in the many facets of opera for singers. Employing a mix of rehearsals, workshops, and classes leading to performances of opera excerpts and/or one-act operas at the end of each term, training will include acting, movement, musical preparation and coaching, recitative study, audition techniques, and role preparation. vcm.bc.ca/music-therapy Music Therapy Music Therapy is the skilful use of music as a therapeutic tool to restore, maintain, and improve mental, physical, and emotional health. The nonverbal, creative, and affective nature of music facilitates contact, learning, self-expression, communication, and growth. VCM Music Therapy sessions meet the needs of children as young as 18 months old to the elderly; those of all ages with exceptionalities, conditions, or illnesses, and improve the quality of life for all. Sessions may take place in the VCM Music Therapy studios or in such facilities as hospitals, group homes, long-term care and independent living facilities, hospice, geriatric care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Children, adolescents, adults, and elderly with the following may benefit from Music Therapy: • Mental challenges • Physical challenges • Autism Spectrum Disorders • Sensory impairments • Learning difficulties • Brain injuries • Conduct and/or behavioural disorders • Recovery of Mental Health from Troubling Life Events, Substance Use, and “Illness” • Strokes/Alzheimer’s/Dementia • Palliative care Musical activities are carefully designed to meet individuals’ needs and achieve therapeutic outcomes. Multi-Sensory Studio The VCMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state-of-the-art Multi-Sensory Studio offers a peaceful retreat for music therapy participants. This is a studio where one can create, express themselves, find respite from their daily anxiety or pain, meditate and use guided imagery techniques. The equipment in the studio was carefully chosen to meet very specific needs. It includes laser-projected lighting, a Somatron vibro-acoustic recliner, flat-screen TV, bubble tower and fibre-optics.

VCM is home to two fine performance venues: the 800-seat Alix Goolden Performance Hall, voted Top Live Music Venue in Victoria by Monday Magazine in 2014, and the more intimate 100-seat Robin and Winifred Wood Recital Hall. In addition to the many fine concerts presented by VCM students and faculty each year, our venues host world-class performers from all genres of music, as well as speakers and authors. The Alix Goolden Hall is also the perfect venue for weddings as a unique, picturesque, historical and nondenominational former church sanctuary that is both spacious and intimate. Getting Started COURSE SELECTION If you or your child plans to register for studio instruction for the first time, you may take a single “trial” lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Prospective students also may audit one group class session per semester before committing to the remaining classes.

Studio Instruction

Students typically have one lesson per week for 36 weeks (2 terms) from September to June, unless alternate arrangements are made directly with the instructor. Students may begin individual lessons at any time during the academic year. Students will be referred to an appropriate instructor based on: musical background, goals, availability, and fee options. Contact us or visit our website to facilitate the referral process. Students may request lessons with a specific instructor, though the VCM cannot guarantee availability. Once an instructor is assigned, the instructor will contact the student/parent to make arrangements for lessons.

Group Classes & Ensembles

Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly – please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits and the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Some courses may require an application, interview, placement test, or audition as indicated in this course calendar.

STATUTORY HOLIDAYS Studio instruction that falls on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher.

VCM STUDENT CARD

Privileges and benefits of the VCM student card include: • Use of practice studios • Participation in the weekend noon concerts • A 15% discount on select ensemble tuition • Free participation in most masterclasses • Free admission to select concerts in the annual VCM Presents concert series • Discounts at several area music stores

PRACTICE ROOMS Currently registered VCM students may use practice rooms on a first come, first served basis, subject to availability. Policies for practice rooms and assigned keys are available at the administration office. Requests for practice rooms can be made through the front desk during regular business hours, and through the custodial staff when the office is closed. Custodial phone: 250.812.6134

PARKING The Downtown VCM parking lot is reserved for staff and faculty passholders at all times. Street parking and public lots are available within short walking distance.

Registration, Refund and Withdrawal Policies

VERY IMPORTANT: Instructors are directly dependent upon timely student payments. If payment is not received, the instructor is not paid. Your cooperation is appreciated. Other Fees: Returned Cheque $20.00 charged for any cheque refused for any reason by the bank. Subsequent payment can only be made by certified cheque, debit card, money order, or cash. Refund Processing Fee $25.00 Late Fees* $10.00 per month

The Fine Print

TUITION Tuition and other fees must be paid before a student is admitted to a lesson, class, or ensemble. Payment may be made by phone, email money transfer, mail, or in person. Cheques should be made payable to the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

* Tuition is due by September 15th for Term 1 and January 31st for Term 2. Mid-term registrations require immediate payment.

TRANSACTION FEES Transaction fees of $2.25 will be charged once per receipt.

PAYMENT Payment is required in full at the time of registration for the current term. A payment plan is available. If the payment plan is chosen, the balance is paid over equal monthly installments by pre-authorized debit on the 15th of each month, beginning with the first month of enrolment and continuing over a period of your choice, ending no later than the end of term. Transaction fees will be charged based on the number of payments selected.

CREDIT CARD POLICY The VCM does not accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. Credit cards are accepted for group classes, concert tickets, donations, and other fees.

CANCELLATION POLICY If a student cancels a private lesson with reasonable notice, the instructor may wish to arrange a make-up lesson, pending the instructor’s schedule and the availability of studio space. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to make up the lesson, particularly if insufficient notice (under 24 hours) is given. Students are expected to be present for all scheduled lessons. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc. If an instructor cancels, they are obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available.

REFUNDS & WITHDRAWALS There are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, except in cases of illness/injury accompanied by a doctor’s note, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term. Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a doctor’s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by email to the Registrar’s Office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to the following schedule and are subject to a $25 processing fee: • • • • •
