Enriching Lives Through Music Vision A Centre for Excellence and enjoyment of music through education, performance and music therapy.
Mission To enrich lives through music in a thriving community accessible to all.
There is no question – music inspires and soothes our souls from the very first days of our lives. As babies, lullabies rock us to sleep and help us bond with our parents. As toddlers and young children, we begin to really hear music, recognize it and dance to its beat. As youth and adults, music inspires us to move even more and express our thoughts and feelings when our own words just don’t quite fit. Your life-long journey with music can begin within the halls of the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM). Founded in 1964, the VCM has enriched lives through music by fostering a thriving community of musicians and music lovers who celebrate the teaching, learning and performance of music at all levels. When you study music at the VCM, your teachers will be among some of the best in the world, providing you with an inspirational environment where creativity and artistic expression is always encouraged. Nurturing and instilling a love of music in our students is what has sustained the VCM to date, and it is this same passion that will propel us to an extraordinary future. We’re very proud to offer private lessons in a variety of disciplines including piano, strings, brass, wind, voice, jazz, percussion, composition, theory, music therapy, as well as group classes and continuing education opportunities. Of special significance is our Children’s Music Department — it is the most comprehensive in Victoria; offering fun, creative musical activities and outreach programs that are founded on the research that proves that music builds improved cognitive and social skills crucial to a child’s development. There is no question that the VCM has the educational experience that’s right for you. Passion, soul and heart are filling the halls of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and we invite you to share in the experience! Make this year your year to make music at the VCM!
Jane Butler McGregor CEO, Victoria Conservatory of Music
“As a future professional musician, studying at the VCM from a young age gave me an amazing foundation. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend my childhood and teenage years; the programs I’ve participated in have been incredible and the top notch faculty are a constant inspiration. I will take what I learned here with me on all my musical endeavours in life.” — Natasha Galitzine, former VCM student, now studying at Juilliard

Getting Started Group Classes & Ensembles Participating in group classes at the VCM is a great way to gain musical experience in a fun and supportive environment. Our group classes offer students a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, play great music and learn from amazing instructors. These group experiences add to the richness of music education through sharing it with others – and participating is really just plain fun! In the VCM Course Calendar you will find the group classes by age group and by department. Fees, duration, and timetables are included with each class description. Most group classes are full-year courses that run for 32 or 34 weeks (two terms) from September to May. Adult Continuing Education classes follow the same terms as other group classes, but are often broken out into shorter modules. Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly – please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits, and if the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Some courses may require an application, interview, placement test, or audition as indicated. Beginning August 1, 2012, you can register online for selected group classes and ensembles.
Individual Lessons
Call to Register!
One of the most important things the VCM offers is private instruction for a wide range of instruments and styles. Regardless of your age, level, or instrument, we can match you with an excellent teacher that will inspire you. With approximately 140 active faculty members, the VCM will have you playing your best in no time!
Call today and speak with our helpful staff. We are here to answer all your questions and guide you through the registration process.
We are here to help make registration easy! Sample Registration and Referral Forms are on the next page. You can fill in and mail your forms, visit VCM offices in person, or call us to register by phone. The first step is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. We’ll ask you for some basic information, including contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited for your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or “trial” lesson, and then you’ll be on your way! Typically, students register for 36 lessons per year (18 each term). However, in consultation with your teacher, you may register for as many, or as few, lessons as you wish. While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available through the summer. Another option for those interested in learning to play an instrument is to share lessons with a small group — 2 or 3 students share lessons together, and the cost is equally divided among them. This is a great option for friends, parents and children, or musicians who want to work on chamber music. If you are a single individual interested participating in shared lessons, let us know during the referral process, and we will do our best to match you with other students of similar interest and ability.

Children’s Music Welcome to the Children’s Music Department! Providing a child with a foundation in music is one of the most valuable things a parent can do. Studies show that when children take part in music classes, their social and cognitive skills are impacted in extremely positive ways. Music facilitates learning, instils respect and pride, and increases self-esteem and positive social interaction. Discover our wonderfully creative and innovative collection of music classes that will be the start of your child’s lifelong journey with music. Department Head: Dr. Johanne Brodeur PhD, MTA Dr. Brodeur is Head of both the Music Therapy and the Children’s Music Departments. Previously, she was an instructor in the Music Education faculty at the University of British Columbia, as well as in the Music Therapy program at Capilano College. Johanne is the former President of the Canadian Association of Music Therapy and has served on the Scientific Committee for the World Federation of Music Therapy and Music/Medicine. She is an international lecturer and a published author.
“There is absolutely no doubt that the VCM is your #1 choice for music education for children of all ages and abilities. Please come and celebrate the positive power of music in children’s lives and let us inspire and enrich the lives of your children.” — Dr. Johanne Brodeur

Families Making Music
The Orff Program
A fun, popular music program for the whole family! Sing, dance, try new instruments and play fun musical games. Bring the whole brood, from babies to five year olds, for a music program at a great family rate. Offered in English or in French.
Orff-Schulwerk is a holistic approach to music education. The Orff program is based on the philosophy that the gift for sound, rhythm, movement, problem-solving and creative expression is innate in each individual, and that each child is capable of artistic expression, reasoning, learning, and creating. It is a child-centred approach where music-making is experiential, non-competitive and performed in an atmosphere of fun, joy and discovery. Orff classes embrace all facets of creative music education and all concepts of music are taught through speech, stories and drama, body percussion, dance and creative movement, instrumental play, improvisation and composition.

Musical Curiosities
Birth-14 months 9:50-10:20am These classes for baby and caregiver inspire babies’ curiosity as they are introduced to bouncing rhymes, lullabies and rhythmic movement. Bubbles, scarves, puppets and small instruments, i.e. bells, shakers and drums, are used to introduce basic musical concepts such as loud/soft, fast/slow and high/low, all while developing speech, concentration, memory, social behaviours and gross motor skills.

Colourstrings
3 months to 5 years Sing! Move! Create! These classes are based on the Colourstrings method – an innovative, child-friendly approach to music education based on Kodály, Orff and Dalcroze principles. Developed in Europe and recognized world-wide, these age-appropriate, multisensory, playful classes will inspire your child while building a solid musical foundation and a lifetime love of music! Core music skills are developed through a variety of multi-sensory activities – singing, playing instruments, improvising, listening and creative movement. Each child’s imagination is captivated as they explore and respond freely to activities in a non-performance based atmosphere. Classes are split by age and tailored to the intellectual, musical, emotional and social development of the children, changing and growing as they do. The Colourstrings curriculum is sequential – yearly registration is encouraged. The Colourstrings song books and CDs ensure seamless continuity between home and class. They are available for purchase at the VCM office. Instructor: Duration: Tuition:
Emily Nagelbach (pending certification) 12 weeks/session (3 sessions per year) 30 minute classes: $120/session 40 minute classes: $160/session 45 minute classes: $180/session
9:00-9:40am
Explore the natural connection between music, movement and early learning. Kids at this age love to move – through creative movement, toys and songs, their timing, coordination and language skills will improve. A strong sense of beat is developed and the musical concepts of loud/soft, fast/slow and high/low are reinforced. *walking independently
Musical Adventures 2-3 years
11:25am-12:05pm
In addition to singing and creative movement, new instruments like triangles, rhythm sticks and tone blocks are introduced, and the concepts of rhythm and of making music together are explored. Creativity, social skills, confidence and self-esteem are developed through interactive role play and turn-taking games that gradually encourage children to become independent of their parents.
Musical Interactions 3-5 years
10:30-11:15am or 3:45-4:30pm
Singing and movement activities continue to evolve, and melodic percussion instruments, such as glockenspiels and xylophones are introduced. Interactive partner and small group games gradually incorporate concepts of rhythm, pitch, tempo, form and dynamics, which help to develop a deeper musical understanding. The ensemble aspect of music making is emphasized and imaginative ideas are put into musical language so that children begin to understand written musical notation. Children are encouraged to participate in the 3-5 year old class independent of parental support, however parents may attend until their child feels comfortable.

History of Rock ‘n’ Roll Explore the evolution of the world’s most popular musical genre, from its roots in African-American culture to the full blown frenzy that surrounded rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. The first term of this two-part class examines the origins of rock — the fusion of four musical genres to create a musical “Big Bang”. Learn about major artists and their contribution within the context of the social, economic and political climate of America during the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s. Term two focuses on the birth of the rock ‘n’ roll genre as we know it in the 1950s. Keyboard
Piano, Jazz Piano, Pipe Organ, Accordion & Harpsichord The VCM keyboard department offers lessons for all ages, interests and learning styles. Most students register for one-on-one studio lessons, but the Victoria Conservatory of Music also offers shared lesson and group instruction for both children and adults. Group instruction is often a good choice for the beginner or elementary level students. Choose from classicalor popular-based instruction — there is something for everyone! A specific teacher may be requested, otherwise the Department Head will recommend a teacher with every effort made to match students’ needs with instructors’ particular expertise. The VCM has keyboard instructors fluent in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Mandarin. Department Head: Walter Prossnitz BMus, MMus (Juilliard) Walter was born in Victoria and studied at the VCM from 1970-78. He then went on to receive his degrees from the Juilliard School and, after graduating, moved to Switzerland where he has lived for the past 25 years, pursuing a career as a teacher and performer. Walter has played and recorded in major cities such as London, Paris, New York, Washington DC, Budapest, Munich, Beijing and Hong Kong and has given masterclasses in several countries. As the new keyboard department head, he is looking forward to new challenges at the VCM. He encourages all piano students to enrich their musical educations and take advantage of the many VCM masterclasses and concerts.

Suzuki Piano ages 3 and up With the Suzuki Piano method children learn to play by ear through repeated listening and immersion in a musical environment. Music reading is taught when the ear is sufficiently developed and the piano technique is secure. Parental involvement is required. The parent attends each lesson with the student, assists in daily practice, and plays the Suzuki CD at home. With the teacher’s guidance, the parent learns how to help the child with the weekly assignments. Although designed for preschool beginners, the Suzuki Method can be successful at any age.
Kelly Kirby Piano Method 4 to 6 year olds This simple, fun approach to music is designed to capture the imagination of the young child. Kelly Kirby Piano is performance training in which ear-training, sight-reading, and piano playing are taught from the very first lesson. Singing, colouring, and crafts are incorporated into this note-reading method to compliment the musical elements taught. Kelly Kirby is offered as private or semi-private lessons. Instructors include Linda Low, Stella Barbon, Erin Fisher and Nicole Lavallée. Please contact Linda Low, Coordinator, 250.386.5311, ext. 2050, for more information regarding shared piano lesson options.

STRINGS & GUITAR
Strings & Guitar The String Department of the VCM has instruction and programming for students of all abilities. Our String Department has a rich resource of dedicated faculty in the disciplines of violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar (classical, steel string and electric), harp, historical instruments and folk fiddling. We offer comprehensive programming for those who wish to pursue music in a variety of more in-depth settings. In addition to high-level private instruction and introductory group classes, three levels of string orchestra, two levels of cello orchestra, and two levels of guitar orchestra ensure a place for students of every level. We also arrange chamber music opportunities for students of similar ability. These four aspects of instrumental instruction, when combined with performance opportunities and additional VCM classes, allow students of any age to enjoy the well-rounded and enriching experiences that studying on a string instrument can offer. Department Head: Michael van der Sloot, violin/viola BMus, MMus (British Columbia)
“Bringing music to the hearts and minds of students opens up worlds of imagination and creativity. The confidence required to present these ideas, along with the discipline to harness them, prepares a student to face any challenge in life.” — Michael van der Sloot
Michael van der Sloot began his musical studies with one of Canada’s foremost string teachers, his brother William van der Sloot. He later received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in viola at UBC, studying with Gerald Stanick, with Post-Graduate studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria with Thomas Riebl. Michael has played with most of the symphonies in Western Canada. His performances have taken him throughout Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Italy. Michael’s talents as a teacher and adjudicator are very much in demand. His students frequently receive top awards at National and International competitions.

THEORY AND COMPOSITION
Theory and Composition Music theory is the language of music - an essential part of musical training. The VCM offers individual and shared lessons, as well as group classes, for all levels of music theory and composition, including Rudiments, Harmony, Counterpoint, Analysis, and Musicianship. Taking classes in Theory and Composition provides an ideal foundation for all students of music. Department Head: Stephen Brown ARCT Composition; ARCT Theory
“Our world would be vastly different if we did not have musical notation. Operas, symphonies, string quartets, and sonatas would not exist. One cannot construct a cathedral without a blueprint. One cannot compose a musical work of any significance without a score. It is the blueprint of a musical work.“
— Stephen Brown
Stephen Brown is an accomplished composer, conductor, and teacher. He joined the VCM in 1992 and, in addition to his duties as Head of Theory and Composition, has served as Director for several VCM Festivals, including the 2010 Bach & Company Festival and the 2009 Mozart-Haydn Festival. He is the Artistic Director of the Sidney Orchestra, and a theory syllabus and examination designer for the VCM. Learn more about Stephen at www.stephenbrown.ca.

Shared lessons or group classes will be created as needed in the subject areas listed on the previous page. Our experienced faculty can design a program to suit your needs, whether you are preparing for an exam, working toward high-school music credits, brushing up in anticipation of post-secondary music study, or are simply interested in the theoretical aspects of music. Theory group classes begin the week of September 10 2012, except those affiliated with the Camosun College Music Department, which begin the week of September 3. Where “consult instructor” is indicated, the day and time of that class will be determined at registration based on students’ availability. Contact us for more information: 250.386.5311; info@vcm.bc.ca. Many of the classes comprise a full year, 32-week curriculum, culminating with the spring RCM theory examination session, which typically occurs during the second weekend (Friday and Saturday) in May. The registration deadline for spring exams is early March. For more information, visit the RCM Examinations website: www.examinations.rcmusic.ca/ Theory classes are typically comprised of 4 to 12 students. Extra sections will be added as enrolment requires. When there are fewer than three students registered for a class, a shared private lesson will be arranged by the instructor. Students are responsible for the cost of textbooks. Payment may be made in full at the beginning of the year, in two installments (September and January, no fee), or monthly ($20 service fee applies to monthly installment option).
Theory by Correspondence If you live in a remote area, a different country, or for any reason cannot attend classes in person at the VCM, distance education can be a great option. Studying music theory will help you become musically literate, with a better understanding of how music “works.” Correspondence instruction is available for the following:

This program may be used as the foundation for the Associate of the Victoria Conservatory of Music (AVCM) in Teaching — a certificate that is recognized by the Registered Music Teachers Association (RMTA) and the Music Educators Association (MEA). Completion of this course, along with Theory co-requisites, a Grade 11 instrument-specific practical exam, and VCM Grade Five or equivalent in piano, leads to the AVCM Teacher Certification.

THE V C M AD V AN TAGE
Nurturing a Community of Gifted Young Musicians Founded in January 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities. There are three categories of Collegium membership — all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level.
Full Members
Full members are students between the ages of approximately 13 and 18 who have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally Grade 9 or above. Full members participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists.
Associate Members “Perhaps my favourite part about being a student in the Collegium Program was noticing how enjoyable it is to be part of a community full of caring, devoted, interesting people who were so much fun to be around.” — Student
Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. Associates generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium.
Junior Members
Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership. In every category, Collegium membership is open to all qualified students, whether or not they are studying with VCM faculty. Teachers are invited to encourage their students to audition for the Collegium. When a student is accepted, the Head of Collegium and the studio teacher collaborate to provide an enriched program addressing the student’s individual needs. New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available. Visit vcm.bc.ca/departments/collegium/ for more information and to apply online.

The cost of instruction in the Collegium Program is much higher than the fees listed below. For example the actual cost for each full member of the Collegium is about $1,900 per term. Fees for Associate and Junior members are also subsidized. The Victoria Conservatory of Music is committed to making this special program available to students who can most benefit from it. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study — in the case of full members by over 50% — through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the Conservatory itself.
Full membership: $1,150 per term Every Collegium student who is a full membership receives a scholarship of $200 per term, resulting in a net tuition of $950 per term, which includes: s s s s

Associate Membership: $350 per term The fee paid by Associate members covers a portion of the cost of their chamber music instruction. Associate members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors and occasional participants.
Junior Membership: $350 per term The fee paid by Junior members covers chamber music coaching or membership in a VCM orchestra or choir; group theory instruction; and occasional masterclasses designed especially for Junior Collegium members. The fee paid by Junior members represents a discount over purchasing those courses separately. Junior members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors and occasional participants.

The VCM now accepts payment via Electronic Fund Transfer. Simply fill out the form (available from the VCM administration office or online at vcm.bc.ca/the-fine-print) and your payments will be automatically debited from your bank account.
Credit Card Policy
As of September 2010, the VCM no longer accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. Credit cards will continue to be accepted for group classes, concert tickets, donations and other fees.
IMPORTANT: Instructors are directly dependent upon timely student payments. If payment is not received, the instructor is not paid. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Payment Plan:

Late Fees:*

*Tuition is due by September 15th for Term 1 and January 15 for Term 2. Mid-term registrations require immediate payment.
Cancellation Policy
If a student cancels a private lesson with reasonable notice, the instructor may wish to arrange a make-up lesson, pending the instructor’s schedule and the availability of studio space. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to make up the lesson. Students are expected to be present for all scheduled lessons. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc. If an instructor cancels, the instructor is obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available.
Did you know? We keep fees low so that as many people as possible can share the experience of music. 68% of the VCM’s annual funding is generated by tuition fees. We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of individual donors, grants, corporate gifts and sponsorship for 32% of our funding.

Refunds & Withdrawals There are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term. Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a Doctor’s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by email to the Registrar’s office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to the following schedule and are subject to a $25 processing fee: One week before the first lesson During the first two weeks During the third week During the fourth week After the fourth week
100% 75% 50% 25% No Refund
We regret that there can be no refunds for registration fees.

The VCM encourages students to remain with the same teacher throughout the term for which they have registered. However, in exceptional circumstances, transfers may be requested through the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar will consult with the Dean and the respective Department Head on a case-by-case basis. The VCM does not guarantee transfer to a different teacher, but every effort will be made to ensure students are placed appropriately with an instructor that meets their individual needs.
Statutory Holidays Individual lessons that fall on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are often closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher. Lessons not billed in the 36-week academic year: Christmas Break Office and building closed Spring Break Office open Teachers may choose to make up missed lessons in this week please consult your instructor
VCM Academic Calendar 2012-2013 Please refer to the VCM Academic Calendar on page 9. The VCM Course Calendar is published before the beginning of the academic year, and while every attempt has been made to ensure its accuracy, the information within is subject to change. The VCM reserves the right to alter or cancel classes at any time, in cases of insufficient enrolment, instructor absence, etc. Group class and ensemble meetings that are cancelled as the result of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances will not be re-scheduled; private lessons cancelled for such reasons may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.
