VOICE

Voice The VCM offers voice lessons for students at all levels from beginners to professionals. Students may take lessons for enjoyment, to prepare for the Conservatory examinations, or to hone professional skills. A.R.C.T., A.V.C.M. Department Head Ingrid Attrot is a former student of Selena James at the VCM. Her background includes a Post Graduate Opera Diploma from the University of Toronto, and training at the National Opera Studio, London, England. Ingrid has been a soloist with the English National Opera, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, and has performed with conductors Charles Dutoit, Sir Neville Marriner, Trevor Pinnock, and Richard Hickox. In recital she has appeared at the Royal Opera House and Wigmore Hall (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and Le Monnaie (Brussels).

After a successful re-launch in 2010-11 that saw high-quality productions of excerpts from The Marriage of Figaro and operas based on the works of Shakespeare, the 2011-12 season promises to be hugely rewarding for participants and audiences alike.

Voice Classification

This exciting and sought-after program provides comprehensive training in the many facets of opera for singers. Employing a mix of rehearsals, workshops, and classes leading to performances of opera excerpts and/or one act operas at the end of each term, aspects of training will include acting, movement, musical preparation and coaching, recitative study, audition techniques, and role preparation. Our faculty lineup will consist of well known guest directors, conductors and masterclass clinicians.

Advanced Voice Workshop

This course is an opportunity for advanced students and professional singers to explore all aspects of their performance. Using a masterclass format we will work with technique, style, interpretation, bodywork and presence to create powerful performances and empowered performers. Voice Competitions

The VCM Voice Department runs five competitions each year — English Song, German Lieder, Italian Art Song, and La Mélodie Française. These competitions are open to all registered VCM voice students and provide excellent performance opportunities. There are 3 divisions: Junior: 14 years and under Intermediate: 15-18 years Senior: 19 years and over

English Art Song The overall winner of this competition will be awarded the Margaret Abbott Memorial Scholarship. English language art songs from the British, American or Canadian art song repertoire are performed.

German Lieder This is a competition for singers and pianists celebrating the German Song literature. Competitors are encouraged to enter as a team. A VCM accompanist will be provided for any voice student unable to find a pianist.

Italian Art Song

Masterclasses are open to all VCM voice students and will be held four times throughout the year. Contact us for scheduling and registration information: 250.386.5311; info@vcm.bc.ca.

This annual competition is made possible by the sponsorship of Dr. Erika Kurth. The Italian Art Song Competition is open to Intermediate and Senior Divisions only.

Professional Music School Masterclasses

La Mélodie Française This is the annual competition of the French Song literature.

These advanced masterclasses are open to all students enrolled in the Diploma in Music Program, the Music Foundations Program, Self-Directed Post-Secondary Studies, Opera Studio, and/or the Advanced Voice Workshop. Day and Time: Thursdays
