Message from the President January Meeting Afterglow! Boy, Oh Boy! What a great night it was! Our ‘kick-off’ celebration and awards presentation was a wonderful success!! My heart was overflowing with emotions as I met many new, up and coming photographers and hugged many more that are old friends, ‘seasoned photographers’. The room was overflowing with faces anxious and excited at the prospects of what the new year will bring. Sheer joy!! We will be posting articles and photos for the next few months, I’m sure. There are just too many things to say about the night in one month. Watch for them!! Creating Excellence; Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Future. My theme for 2015 is, “Creating Excellence; Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Future”. January’s mixture of new and seasoned faces was the perfect beginning of 2015. As We Honor Our Past, and We Embrace Our Future, this is a special time for us to‘bond’ and learn from each other!! Creating excellence can only start at the beginning. g Learning the basics. The rules. Old school ways. With 65 years under our belt, we have an abundance of ‘seasoned’ photographers that just LOVE to share what they have learned. Ask! Most feel honored when asked to share. Don’t be afraid! This might be the beginning of a life long friendship. But, continuing to Create Excellence also means embracing our future by continually learning. Accepting change. Not getting stagnant. Our industry is constantly changing. Sometimes faster than our brain can absorb (at least some of us ‘seasoned’ photographers). That is where our ‘fresh’ faces can help us seasoned photographers!
The heart of PPGH is our members! We have a very diversified group of professionals. No matter what your level of experience in photography; I feel that one of the main reasons that most people get involved in PPGH is to expand their Creativity in Photography! After all, photography is your “expression of the moment” when the shutter is pressed…sometimes that expression is to “record” the moment – sometimes it is to create an image that never could be created without your input. Whatever level of creativity that you want to attain – it is my fond hope that the artists and programs that we present, will assist you in your quest for that unique creative image that you have been longing to show the world! Whether you are a seasoned professional or just starting out in this incredibly diverse and changing profession, the PPGH is here to help you become the best you can be.

Member of the Month Teresa Casillas My name is Teresa Casillas and I reside in Katy, TX. I am currently in the travel industry and have been for over 4 years. This has given me the opportunity to photograph all over the world. We have taken 4 to 5 trips a year since I married in 2011 to my wonderful husband Sal Casillas. Between us, we have four amazing kids, an extroverted dog and two polar opposite cats. I have been studying photography for over 10 years. I started learning photography by studying on my own, watching every video and reading every book I could get my hands on. I signed up at the New York Institute of Photography to gain even more knowledge. Later I attended the Art Institute of Houston where I studied for 3 years under four leading photographers. I learned so much from each of them and mainly what I enjoyed photographing and what I didn’t. I specialize in Newborn, Children, and Maternity Photography. I love my Fairy Mini Sessions and hope to oer more mini sessions soon. My charismatic enthusiasm
is contagious and many say that this shows in my work. I have a zest for life and a passion for newborn portraiture and this is clear to anyone I meet.
It is truly mesmerizing capturing a newborn just days old that will last a family a lifetime. They grow so quickly and it is so hard to remember them being so little and delicate.

Being in the travel industry has its perks. I have been so blessed to be able to say I have photographed from the Rocky Mountaineer, Gold Leaf Train in the Canadian Rockies, stayed in Ashford Castle in Ireland, climbed to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, stepping back to the 50’s in Cuba and so much more.
How did you get into photography? *I have been fascinated with photography since I was a child. I was probably 12 or 13 years old. My first camera was a Vivitar that took 110 roll film. I would take pictures and we would take them to Wal-Mart to get them exposed. After many point and shoot cameras I purchased my first Minolta SLR years later and then my first prosumer Nikon DSLR (D80) in 2006. It was not until this time that I seriously considered photography as a career. I bought a small set of studio lights and a background and set up in my media room. I was terrible, I didn’t know Photoshop or lighting set ups, anything really. I was determined to learn what it takes to make a quality image.
I learned the basics through New York Institute of Photography but ultimately attended the Art Institute to grasp the concepts and put them to work. I learned studio strobes inside and out, my instructors drilled all the lighting patterns in my head. Last year I finally upgraded to the Nikon D810 and have decided this will be my last few months with my current job. Although I love the perks of free travel I truly need to pursue my dream. What is the best piece of photography or business advised you have received along the way? *Doesn’t matter how great of a photographer you are if no one sees your work! You

almost have to be better at marketing and the business side or you will never be successful. What type of photography is your specialty and/or your favorite? *Definitely newborn portraiture. There is something about holding new life that just makes my job not feel like a job. It is an honor to capture those special moments. Name a random item you always have in your camera bag? * Spare batteries of every size. You never know. What is your favorite piece of gear that you could not live without? *Expo Disc, I was introduced to this amazing
tool a few years ago and I won’t leave anywhere without it. It is invaluable, to quickly and precisely set my white balance every time. What inspires you as a photographer? *Other skilled photographers’ work, it inspires me to be better. Also my own clients, seeing the emotion from viewing the images of themselves or their child is so rewarding. What other photographers or artists have motivated you or helped mold you into the photographer you are? *Sandy Puc and Rob Provencher. I have
The Viewfinder - Page 15
attended so many seminars that Sandy puts on and I never leave without something new to implement. Also Rob has made me the Fairy photographer that everyone talks about. I could not have done it without him. Why is Houston a great place to be a photographer? *So many opportunities. We are such a large area that I think that we are our own competition. There is plenty to go around. How did you get involved with PPGH? *My instructor Jim Stevens (Past President) suggested I attend. I enjoyed coming and at that time it was free for students. I put down my camera for a couple of years but ultimately decided I was not giving up on my dream. I finally joined PPGH last year and have met so many wonderful people and everyone is so supportive.

How has PPGH helped you as a photographer? *The mentor program is my favorite. I loved working with Karen Butts and learned so much. Not only did I find a fellow photographer that is AMAZING, I found a friend.

2014 Fellowship Recipients TOM HATHCOCK – HONORARY FELLOWSHIP As stated above, this membership is bestowed upon a person who has gone above and beyond the bounds of PPGH. Tom, who has been a member since 1977, is not concerned with awards and recognition, so he never took the time to submit Fellowship points because he was too busy serving the guild. He has not only elevated the guild as a whole to a new level, but in his endearing way, has elevated individual members of the guild to new personal levels. He truly is a gem! For these things, we recognize Tom with an Honorary Fellowship Degree. He has built his successful business by making sure that every client is always taken care of completely. “I started attending the guild in 1972 when I was a junior in high school. There were senior members in the Guild that were encouraging to me. I have always wanted to give back to my profession and print judging is one small way to help my Guild.” This pretty much says it all!! And he is still here, doing just that, mentoring and judging image competition in the most gracious, productive way! He does not need PPGH, he is a master at everything he does. Yet, he continues to attend and give back to the guild. For these things, Alvin received his Full Fellowship. February 2015 KEVIN FALCON – ASSOCIATE DEGREE Kevin joined the guild in 2012 and got involved immediately with the membership committee by helping Karen establish some processes to improve the new membership application and renewal processes as well as other membership processes. Shortly after joining, he was invited to participate on a few other committees and eventually was invited to become a board member. Last year Kevin taught his first PPGH mini-workshop, wrote several Viewfinder articles and continued to help improve the functionality of the PPGH website. Kevin is “The Man.” He is there to help out where ever needed at a moment’s notice. 2014 Executive Director’s Award 2014 President’s Award MELANIE HALL – ASSOCIATE DEGREE Melanie is a long time member of PPGH, she continues to attend our meetings and occasionally serves as a judge for image competition. She is the owner of Melonhead Photo which was established in 2004 in Willis, Texas. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Photography from Sam Houston State University in 2007 and a year later she earned her Certified Professional Photographer degree. Before moving her photographic focus to portrait art, she worked as the only full time photographer for a daily newspaper. Her business is now a home based portrait studio in Conroe, Texas. Melonhead Photo is a diverse company photographing babies to brides, as well as commercial, schools and sports. She obtained her BS in Photography from Sam Houston State University. Accomplishments Certified Professional Photographer Brazos Valley Photographer of the Year 2012 & 2013 2014 International Photographic Competition Gold Medalist 2015 Director of Education for Brazos Valley PPA TPPA Associate Fellowship 2011 TPPA Presidents Theme Trophy Recipient 2011, 2012, 2013 TPPA Distinguished Print Award She is a brand new member of ASP (American Society of Photographers) 3 out of 4 images merited at the recent SWPPA image competition. She received her Craftsmen Degree at Imaging USA in Nashville. TERI WHITTAKER – ASSOCIATE DEGREE Teri served as our awesome Treasurer in 2014 and did an incredible job of getting our finances organized! And, now she is our new Vice President! She did not, as many photographers, start out in childhood or adolescence with a love of art or photography. In fact, it was the investigation of how to take a particular type of photograph which led to research on cameras and lens that ignited a passion to capture surroundings, emotions and connections in photographs. One of the goals she recorded for herself in February 2011 was to join the Guild, which she did in October of 2011. She became active in the Guild in 2012. Since then, she has been graced with greater direction for her business, greater vision for her photography, and greater fellowship and friendship than she ever imagined. She is thankful for her opportunity to belong to the Guild. She is also a member of TPPA and PPA. Teri has earned her designation of Certified Professional Photographer and is now pursuing her Master of Photography Degree. KAREN BUTTS – ONE BAR Karen received her Full Fellowship Degree in 2013 and her service to the guild includes fulfilling the duties of Membership Chair on the Board of Directors for 2 ½ years. With Kevin’s help, she re-establish the Fellowship program in 2012 while grandfathering in the four

previous years. She also served on The Viewfinder committee, has written articles for the Viewfinder, mentored fellow photographers, presented a Mini Workshop and an all-day PPGH program with fellow photographer, Cindy Crofford and continues to participate in Image Competition. Karen started her business as a second career in 2004. She has always been interested in any creative process from the time she was a small child. She also has enjoyed painting, weaving, pottery, sewing and other artistic hobbies. She stumbled upon photography when she photographed her daughter’s engagement portraits because the wedding package only included either bridal or engagement. Accomplishments Received Best Portrait of a Child for PPGH in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 Received FotoFest’s Curator’s Choice Award in 2014 Received President’s Award in 2013 Received Executive Director’s Award in 2013 Earned her CPP in 2013 Went 4 for 4 at SWPPA in 2013 & 2014 Was a Gold Medalist for International Photographic Competition 2013 & 2014 Received 2 merits in the 2015 SWPPA in Open Category and received first merit in the Master Artist Category She has 4 Loan Prints and 3 Showcase Prints Recently she became and member of ASP (American Society of Photographers) She received her Master of Photography Degree at Imaging USA BELINDA HIGGINS – ONE BAR Belinda has been an active member of the guild for a very long time and earned her Full Fellowship in 2002. She recently served as our VP and is our new 2015 PPGH President. Belinda brings a special warmth to the guild and to the board with her warm, bubble personality. From reading the credits on her website, you can tell that her clients love her, too, as she treats them like family. Her full service studio is in Pasadena on 3.5 acres and she has been photographing 30+ years. She not only loves learning and continuing her education, but also loves sharing with anyone willing to listen to how we use to do it in the “old school days.” She received a bar for her continued service. February 2015
Letters to the PPGH This was the first time that Tina and I were at the Houston Guild meeting pastnder week. a board February 2015 The this Viewfi - As Page 34 member for Professional Photographers of America, it is a real pleasure to visit with different guilds and affiliates in addition to our duties with PPA. I must say that my experience with the Houston Guild was extraordinary.
First there were many photographers there that I have known from my days as a member of the SWPPA when I lived in Arkansas. But what really stood out to me was the atmosphere of “family” that existed at your meeting. It seemed that everyone had gathered together to spend an evening in fellowship and a common purpose. And that purpose was to share and to encourage each other in their journey as photographers. I saw young photographers, students, and others sitting and enjoying the evening with, well let’s just say, “more experienced” photographers. Listening, learning and laughing together as the evening progressed. This was a refreshing sight as there seems to be a feeling of us against them in some other areas that I have visited. Many of us started out as these young photographers are today, excited, enthused and ready to learn and begin their personal journey towards a common goal, to create images that our clients want and will pay for. So, I have to say that I was a little more than impressed with the evening as it unfolded last Tuesday night. I wish nothing but the best for the continued growth of the PPGH and have no doubts that you are well on your way to serving your members in the future. Best of luck to all of you and thank you for a wonderful evening. Thank you for all that you do for photographers, Michael Michael Timmons is a 2015 Board Member and 2016 President-elect of the Professional Photographers of America, ed. What a great evening! I saw friends I have not seen in many years. PPGH was my guild when I first started my business. I met so many great people over the years. I learned so much from the speakers and from the conversations at dinner with the members. Then in 1985 I was ask to give my very first program. Where? PPGH! Since then I have spoken in every state in America, China, Canada, Denmark, England, Whales, Scotland, Mexico and on 5 cruise ships! This would not have happened if I had not gotten my start at PPGH.. Don’ t miss a single meeting! You never know where it will lead! Doug Box, M.Photog. Texas PPA - Executive Director Professional Photographers Guild of Houston Board of Directors and Members: I just wanted to let all of you know how great your meeting on January 20th was! Everything was done just perfectly! Well ok, Belinda could have been a little taller, but giving her a stage would have been overkill. This was a celebration! You truly honored 65 years of service to the Houston photographic community. Seeing so many of your past presidents warmed my heart. I have been attending photography functions just shy of twenty years, and it was these very individuals who offered a hand of friendship and mentorship to us over the decades. I am proud to say that I call many of them lifelong friends. It is easy to forget what people have done to build our organizations. I am glad that you have made it a priority to make sure that does not happen. Having TPPA board members and PPA Board members, none of whom leave in Houston, make the effort to attend shows how well you are respected not only in Texas, but at the National level. The energy and the passion that was put forth for our industry was simply amazing! I had the privilege of speaking at an all day PPGH seminar several years ago. There were maybe 25 people in attendance, tonight you had over 120! It was great to see you honor people’s service, talents, dedication and longevity in front of such a large audience. In my opinion this has been achieved through a shared board vision that has left egos and titles at the curb in order to knock down perceptions. I know this vision has taken several years to grow into fruition. Everybody had to pass the torch. And most importantly, it had to be accepted by the next in line and carried through. The ability to have the vision is not easy, congratulations! I left your meeting excited about what can be achieved. I also left challenged to do more as the Executive Director of San Antonio, and the Treasurer for Texas PPA. Not to run with the torch, but to make sure we have a vision that can be shared with others and passed along to those who wish to serve in the future. Thank you and Congratulations! Trey Homan, Professional Photographers of San Antonio, Executive Director (2015-2016) Texas Professional Photographers Association, Treasure (2015)

65th Anniversary Kickoff Member Articles Honoring our Past, Embracing our Future, Striving for Excellence It was a party not to be missed at our 65th PPGH Anniversary Celebration on January 20. A Photo Booth, Awards and Surprise Honors abounded throughout the night. Spaghetti Warehouse was the place to be as 110 of us “Honored our Past” and “Embraced our Future”. Belinda Higgins opened the party by welcoming several special guests. Michael Timmons, M. Photog. Cr. Photog. and President Elect PPA, Tina Timmons, M. Photog. Cr., Mike Fulton, Board of Director, PPA and his wife Suzy, Trey Homan, PPSA Executive Director, TPPA Treasurer, PPA Council Member, PPA Charities Trustee, Doug Box, M Photog., Cr., CPP, Executive Director, TPPA, and Frank Cricchio, M. Photog., Cr., F-ASP, Past ASP President, Past PPA President, Past SWPPA President and Past TPPA President, were all on hand to honor us as we kicked off our 65th year. After introducing our special guests, all the Past Presidents were asked to stand. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to recognize those who have lifted PPGH up and helped build this great organization. Belinda shared how much it meant to her to see so many familiar faces from the past, and also so many new, young faces of those who are our future. She expressed excitement at the prospect of learning from the new members as we get to know them.
The 2014 Board of Directors was introduced and thanked for their service. The 2015 Board of Directors was introduced and warned of our Executive Director’s ever present guidance with a surprise display of photos that the audience held up on sticks...all of Tom Hathcock’s face. This was a nod to Tom’s contributions and assistance to all those who work within the Guild. Karen Butts presented the Fellowship awards with a lovely tribute to each recipient, including Honorary Full Fellowships for Tom Hathcock and Alvin Gee, both of whom are Past Presidents who have given unceasingly to the Guild. Kim Christensen, as Past President 2014, presented the much anticipated Annual Print Awards. Kim presented the President’s Award to Kevin Falcon, in honor of all he has contributed to the Guild. Tom Hathcock presented two Executive Director Awards for members who went above and beyond in their service to the Guild. Those awards were given to Kim Christensen and Kevin Falcon. After the Awards were given, our very own Carol Andrews Jensen spoke to us about her experience within the Guild

and what it means to her. She moved us with her description of visiting for the first time, intimidated and alone, and Alvin Gee approaching her and saying, “Come, sit with me.” She shared how the Guild had helped to shape her into the Photographer and Businesswoman she had become. Even more importantly, she shared how the Guild had provided her with life-long friends. She encouraged us to seek out one another, to get to know one another, and by doing so to grow together in our journey. Michael Timmons shared information regarding the current state of PPA and various opportunities membership provides. He then described the PPA National Award. It is a very special Award that can be given to national, regional and international affiliated associations which confer this special honor in recognition of outstanding service to Professional Photography performed by an individual, usually in the association’s region. He wrapped up his speech with the announcement that the PPGH had honored our very own Tom Hathcock with the PPA National Award. This was presented in appreciation of his unfailing gift of time, talent and support to PPGH for the past several years. Tom’s dedication in reaching out to members, supporting them and encouraging them to get involved and also grow in their professional journey has had a profound impact on the Guild. It was so exciting to see Tom’s surprise!
