A Message from Birgit

Summer is my favourite season ! When the weather is warm, it’s time to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends ! This year the vintage gypsy magazine covers are about a journey through time: our Lifetime . Our human journey begins when we are forming inside our mothers body which then takes us through amazingly different stages of transformations and experiences: our life. This forms the theme for this years covers. For the winter edition of the magazine I painting a winter scene, dawn, a morning scene, a rare moment, when the sun rises late in winter and the moon is still out. All is still and quiet , a woman pregnant with child. A quiet solitude moment appreciated, shared with her four legged companions. A quiet simplicity in life before the busy time of a new child coming into being. Just as in spring nature becomes a flurry of activity and demands. The spring cover reflected the exuberance of spring in a painting of 2 young children in imaginative play acting. In the spring of our lifetime a wild abandon into activities , trying to find one’s way, gathering experiences, asserting one’s nature and place in the world . Now for summer, women come together to enjoy a canoe trip in nature . Now more settled in lifetime we come together to share, support and enjoy each other’s company.

I had this idea for the summer cover firmly in my mind when I got an invite from friends to spend a weekend camping and kayaking by a lake! What a wonderful time. Although it rained for a good part of the weekend, one of the tents flooded and the cellphones ran out of batteries, the friendly conversations never ceased, meals were shared and kayaking under the moon made our time together Joy. So many beautiful moments shared. That’s what summer is all about . For the summer edition of the vintage gypsy magazine an image of friends gathered to share a good time in nature . I hope your summer will be filled with shared nature activities! What is your favourite summer activity? Perhaps you have a different favourite season?

Vintage Gypsy is about sharing our stories, to inspire women to create positive change within themselves and their circles. Some women find strength in sharing a story, for some it takes great courage to share. Some stories make us laugh, some make us cry, some are very dark, but writing is a healing process and sharing gives us strength. We are emotional beings who carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, sometimes we just want to be heard, and understood, and know we are not alone. Vintage Gypsy is a community to share inspiration, facilitate healing and spread LOVE.

Live In Love

The time is upon us to rise up, it is time to fully accept your gifts and bring them forth in the world. Yes, I am speaking directly to your soul right now, you have so many gifts to bring forth. So, what are you fucking waiting for? What has been holding you back from bringing them forth? Where are your blocks? For me my blocks had been all around thinking about how others would perceive me, feeling that I am not good enough or feeling that what I have to say is absolutely insane. I realize that this judgment is all around us. The collective thinking is infected and off kilter. The world right now needs a shift in thinking. Societal thinking is really fucking off balance right now. The drive for perfection, for success, for obedience is making us sick. Sick in the head, sick in the body, sick in our energetic presence. This drive for conformity and structure is keeping us small. The bullshit all around us is hold us back from really loving ourselves fully. Think about the leaders in the world right now, the masculine energy that exuding fear. This is the energy that needs balancing, the divine feminine and divine masculine within each of us needs to be recalibrated. The fear, the judgment, the anxiety that is coming from the divine masculine is a cry for love. It is a call to action to each of us to first balance the masculine and feminine within us so we can love ourselves fully and send love to the world. I know that this calling is within each of you. And that there is work that we all need to do on ourselves first. The work that I needed to do was a journey into the depths of judgement. It was first judgement of myself and then complete judgement of everyone else around me. This circle of judgment was the biggest block of bringing my gifts into the world. So, what is your block? Reach within yourself, you know what your innate gifts and powers are. If you are saying “Fuck Jen,” I don’t know what my gifts are? I don’t know what work I need to do. I want you to find a place in nature. A place that when you walk there you feel the energy, take your shoes off and feel the earth, feel her course through your body through your feet. Feel the energy come up through your body and fill every cell with love. Sit in this place of divine love for as long as it takes for you to let judgement go. You will feel it in your body, you will feel it in your cells, you will feel it in your thoughts. You will know when you are in that place. Suspend your judgement. It may take you days of doing this practice to suspend judgement, it may take, you weeks, and if you are like me, it may take you fucking years to suspend this judgement. The key is consistency. Do this daily. Find your daily practice. Once you are feeling this energy of love flowing through your veins then dive into your heart and ask the question; what can you do to serve? To serve yourself, to serve your family, to serve your community and through this act to ultimately serve the world. Mother earth is begging for each gypsy to claim her place in the world. To feel herself worthy and to send love to those who are not yet ready to find themselves.

This work will raise your vibration, it will change your energetic blueprint. Think about how you want to walk in this world. How do you want to feel? Ha – it always comes back to that question. And push that question one step further how do you want others to feel in your

presence? This work is of congruency, balance, and recalibration. When you love yourself, others around you feel the love. When you are blocked and in judgment of yourself, you are blocking the love others feel from you and the love that you feel from others. I believe that our energetic currency is love. If we make decisions from a place of love, compassion, joy and grace then we can find the healing we seek within ourselves and send that healed love out into the world. Say yes to yourself. Say yes to rising up. Say yes to doing your own fucking work. Do your work every fucking day until you feel that place of peace within yourself. Then continue to do that work everyday to stay in your highest energetic vibration. Trust that you know within yourself that you are capable to do this work in the world. Trust in yourself, you know exactly what your daily practice looks like. Be open to experiment with your own energy. Observe others, see how they are responding to you. See the subtleties within them. Know that your work is to fully love yourself to be an example for others to choose to fully love themselves. This work is simple, but fucking powerful, and it’s calling you. Are you ready to say yes? Be love Spread love Live Love

Dec 18 2018 pm The energy of love is all around you. Allow this energy into your hearts. You are putting up so many blocks and masks and armour and the love is not getting in. You think you are living in love you think that you are loving others, but it is all a ruse. You are not allowing the full energy of our love into your life. This is why things seem hard, this is why things seem dull. You keep searching for answers outside of yourselves. You hope for signs and for direction and all you need to do is allow the love into your hearts. It is simple. Yes we say everything is simple because it is. Your thoughts are getting in the way, your beautiful minds have created such a construct that disallows anything to permeate it. So it is time for deconstruction. Deconstruction of everything that you know is true. What if everything you have ever believed is false. What if all of the constructs of society are false, what if they are put up from a collective of society that lives in fear. And this fear has brought forth rules, and processes and norms that are not real and they are not true. There is confusion right now about what to believe. There is only one thing to believe in and that is love. It is not the love that you know, you do not know love, you have not let love in. Your view of love right now is tied up in reciprocation and reward to allow you to feel valued as a human. This is not love, this is only a veil. It is time for you to lift the veil. Look underneath all of the lies, look underneath all of the protection and you will find love. You have locked it away in your hearts because you have thought it was so valuable that you did not want to lose it. You have locked it away and it is calling and crying to be set free. Opening your heart and setting free the love that flows from your heart is the healing that you are seeking. Love freely. Love others. Afford them the ability to see you for who you are, really for what you are- which is pure love. Do not expect anything from others, do not expect anything from yourselves. Live in complete curiosity. There is no striving, there is only observing, feeling love and experiencing the present moment. Let all of the past go, you are not defined by your past, you are not defined by your goals or achievements. Those are also lies and ruses, they are buying into society on what success is. Let that go. Experience the world, experience nature, experience all of your senses coming alive in the present moment. Allow your senses to be activated. This is an act of love. Engage your senses and who you are will pour forth, the love will be released into the world. People will gravitate to you because they will not have seen this kind of love before. This is the awakening that is happening. People are afraid of this love, they are sceptical of it because in the past there has been an expectation from this type of love. There is a stigma around it. It is called selfish. This is the lie, the ultimate state is a selfish state – where you know that you are worthy of love, that you are worthy of existing in this world and that you know that others are also worthy of the same. There is no palm up approach to this. Everything is an energetic exchange with no expectation of anything in return. You do not have to expect anyone to return the love, for them to love themselves or for them to become awakened. Your only mission is to live into your love. That is all. Period. There is nothing else for you to do other than love and accept who you are and your gifts. When you do this, when you let your walls down, your guard down, drop your armour, step out from behind your moat and see the love that is everywhere you will start to see the world through eyes of love. You have glimpsed this love, this beauty, this reverence for everything that is around. Now seek it more, you can only see it when you are present in the moment and you can only be present in the moment when you have dropped all of your armour. Allow this to happen, the hurt, the sorrow, the pain will slip away. The armour is what causes us to live in the dark. The more armour we carry around, the more numb we feel. It is the armour that keeps us still in the world, that keeps us dull. Drop the armour, the striving, the hustling. This armour can be workaholism, alcoholism, distraction, you name it and do it to excess you are numbing. You know when you are doing it. So start shedding those layers, start finding yourself amidst the numbing and allowing you to surface. Allowing her to rise, allowing the love to permeate within you. Live in love. -6-

Virago: A strong, brave, or warlike woman.

I want to set a fire ablaze inside every woman that will burn for 1000 years. I want her to know that she is strong, smart, and resilient. I want her to find her voice and stand in her power. I want to help her find her courage. I want her to feel empowered. Women do not love themselves enough, and I was put here to help change that. I believe energy never lies and you should always trust your gut. I will always stand up for what I believe in, even if I must stand against the ones I love. I will fight for what is right, with every bone in my body. I believe the Universe has a plan, and we are meant for great things.

The Wild Moon Child Amanda Aussant 5 am is my favorite time of day. It gives me a chance to sit in silence and take it all in. The air is different that early. Refreshing and new. During the spring and summer, I sit and listen to the birds’ chip and the gentle breeze. During the fall and winter, I sit with the moon. I hold my coffee in my hands and take in the smell, it is still too hot to drink. I contemplate the million things I want to write about, I usually have a few things on the go. One topic will come to light and I pick up a pen and one of my many notebooks. I write a piece; the I rewrite it. Then I read it, then I read it again. I am a “it’ll figure itself out” kind of girl, but not with this. Writing is the only thing I question, the only thing I second guess. The words come naturally, as they always have. I feel the strength of my ancestors when I write. The many women that came before me, spill out onto the paper. Sometimes it is as if the pen moves on its own and I am no longer in control. I let it happen. I used to censor what I wrote, take out the things that would trigger people. Those days are long gone. I like to stir the pot; in the hopes it will arise important emotions and feelings. Bring them to life. I want people to feel something when they read it, feel anything.

I am only one voice, but I am loud, and I am fearless. I drink coffee at night, speak what’s on my mind, and hate to wear a bra. I love to write and believe poetry and nature can save your soul. I howl at the moon, love to dance naked in the forest, and say fuck a lot. I was put here with the purpose to shake your soul alive. So, I come to you, the nature loving hippie. The outspoken wordsmith. The loud-mouthed warrior. The curious truth seeker. The roaming gypsy. The crazy haired, barefoot, wanderer. The free spirit. The wild moon child. Welcome to my world….

Amanda Aussant is a free spirited wild woman who loves to write about the things that people are scared to talk about. There is nothing taboo with this woman. Life and love or addiction and depression, she covers it all. Her passion in life is to help women get their confidence back and stand in their power. Whether it be through helping tell their story or working with them one on one.

Chasing Summer The Season of Dress Up and Make Believe

Written by: Megs Aylward "The Style Muse" Summer: The season of endless possibilities, road trips, love, and imagination. It is the season of dreams and adventures coming to fruition. If there is one season you can be a little dangerous or carefree in your fashion choices it is now!!you can be a little dangerous or carefree in your fashion choices it is now!! My business mantra, “Be your own muse, Be your own artwork” was created on how I feel in the summer in my long dresses and bare feet touching the soft and prickly grass as I dance to a song I have never heard before or an old golden tune like Marshall Tucker Band, “Can’t You See” . It was literally by chance playing every time I tried to write this article. I felt it was a heavy sign for the mood of this piece and maybe time for me to embrace some southern charm into my summer attire. Point being you can pull inspiration from anything in your life if you are taking a moment to feel and see it. With this image comes the smell of vanilla lightly in the air and I feel like a ballerina fully embracing my femininity as I continue to twirl around in the grass. This technique was my way of trying to keep that feeling somewhere with me throughout the whole year. A little keepsake of these golden months of life and it honestly works. -15-

I invite you to do the same. Take a minute and close your eyes. Where are you? Maybe you are in Rome or Paris exploring the architecture and tasting some gelato in a 1950’s inspired fit and flare dress with some kitten heels. Or the opposite maybe you are deep in the jungle somewhere in cargo shorts and a nice comfy tank top and you are forging through the vegetation and animals you have never seen before. Or, you are sitting in the bed of a truck on a back road listening to new summer hits and oldie rock tunes in jean shorts, white tank, and some glorious worn in boots. The list goes on and on. There is no wrong answer. Just trust wherever your mind takes you that you feel magical and like your best self capture that essence and dress accordingly.

It does not matter if it’s pure fantasy or something you have actually experienced. Clothing is the ultimate form of self expression without words and can change your mood and spirit by just having the fabric touch your skin or by catching a quick glimpse of yourself in the mirror. The exercise is to not stress nor worry that you have the right image. It is about capturing the feeling of summer and expressing it in your clothing. Then, in the later months closing your eyes and remembering that vision and feeling when you’re needing an extra zip in your step. This is a time of many events such as grads, weddings, art and music festivals. Also a great chance to try a new look that you have meaning to try. Or, just be bold. This season’s trends offer lots of room to add some splash to an outfit. There are three past decades making a style comeback. So, whether you’re a mid 90’s gal with high waisted straight cut mom jeans and bold pops of color in your outfit, a 70s Farrah with hints of embroidery, bell bottoms, and a shag haircut, the darling 50s in a fit n flare ensemble , or a bit of all three there is no short supply to create a dynamic 2019 summer look.

Lilith’s Sonnet

They called me wicked, but never said free They called me heathen, but never once strong They beckoned me back, but did not force me When I refused they labelled me all wrong Replaced they did as quickly as they could Erased they did so I could not be named Blew winds to earth to vanish where I stood Dare not mention the one that was untamed But I was here, dear one, never forget I was equal and loved and blessed with grace My courage spoke loud, I will not regret Cleared my name from books, forgot my face Made of earth, but tales are written by kings Marked me with horns and stripped my angel wings Poem and Painting created By: Myrna Richter -17-

Why I chose the English Sonnet An English Sonnet, also known as a Shakespearean Sonnet, is a poem consisting of a strict set of rules that one must abide by in order to be labelled as such a sonnet The basics of an English Sonnet is as such: a sonnet has a total of fourteen lines, and each line has ten syllables. The poem can be broken down into three segments of four lines (a quatrain) and ending in a couplet. The must be a specific rhyming pattern for each quatrain of “abab” and the ending couplet must rhyme as well. It is also noted than an English Sonnet is to have a subject content of either love or nature. I choose to use this type of structure when writing my poem I have entitled simply “Lilith’s Sonnet” because of its strict structure and rules. As one of the stories of Lilith goes, she is said to have been Adam’s first wife that created from the earth just as Adam had been created. Lilith was said to have all the same worldly understanding and equal place in the world as Adam. Their physical reproductive bodies were the only noted difference between the two humans. However, the story goes onto say that Adam did not like Lilith’s strong will and independent spirit. Lilith then uttered the Divine Name and was cast out of Eden. God then sent Angels to ask her to return, but she refused and has thus been mainly labelled as a demon in many religious parables. Though there are many religious texts that have omitted the Lilith story all together. “Lilith’s Sonnet” is to show the irony of using the rules of the poem to tell the story of perhaps the first woman to break the rules. However by not abiding by the noted “nature or love” content, the poem itself breaks the traditional rules.

Myrna Richter lives in a small home full of love in Blackfoot, AB with her husband, two children, two dogs, and two cats. Myrna studied English Literature and Sociology (and a little this and that) and received her Bachelor of General Studies in Arts and Science in 2007 from Athabasca University. Today when Myrna is not fulfilling her role as “Richter House Manager”, she enjoys painting, writing, gardening, and overthinking. (She also thinks she is funny).

WHO'S IN CONTROL YOU OR YOUR DEBT?

"IT'S LIKE GRIME UNDER THE STOVE OR DUST UNDER THE FRIDGE"

BY JESSICA GIES

It’s like the grime under the stove or the dust under the fridge. Debt is dirty, has a tendency to pile up, and can become painful to even look at. According to recent statistics, about half of Canadians – a whopping 48% - are $200 or less away from being unable to carry their current debt load. The average non-mortgage debt in Canada is now over $20,000, financial experts say.

A financial advisor can do plenty to help, including kick-starting debt consolidation or recommending ways to pay debt down faster. But before any aid can be offered, a client must first be willing to concede – it’s not working to go it alone.

It appears being a debt-laden Canadian is now as common in our country as the love for Molson beer and hockey, albeit not nearly as desirable.

After reaching out, there could be a surprise on the horizon. Maybe your debt is not as bad as first believed. Or possibly it’s worse. Either way, ignoring the dust under fridge doesn’t make that problem disappear just like denying a debt problem isn’t a successful financial strategy.

The purpose of saying this is to ignite a shift in those deeply indebted from feeling guilty about it to feeling ordinary. From there, it’s possible to realize that it’s an average Canadian thing to need professional help dealing with debt.

Debt doesn’t need to have control over your finances. Feel free to talk to an advisor if you need help.

Sassy Summer

With Chef Jackie Thoms

Watermelon, Feta & Mint Bites

Caramelized Onion Tart with Pear, Prosciutto and Goat Cheese

My friend Carla asked me to make some appetizers for her son's wedding this summer. I played around with several different versions and found these watermelon, feta and mint bites to be simple but so delicious and refreshing. Perfect for summer.

This is another delicious appetizer for summer. Its simple yet elegant and light, perfect for the wedding. You can make the onions way in advance and I used a store bought thin crust pizza crust for the base.

What You Need 1 small seedless watermelon 1 package pre-cubed feta cheese 1 bunch of fresh mint

1. Dice watermelon into bite size pieces. 2. Cut mint into small pieces. Mint is strong, so you don’t need a lot. 3. Place the watermelon chunk on a platter, top with feta and a piece of mint. 4. Stick a toothpick through and serve or refrigerate until needed

For the caramelized onions: 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced 4 cloves of diced garlic

2 tsp fresh thyme Salt and pepper

1. In a skillet, melt a tablespoon of unsalted butter over low heat. 2. Add the onions, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper. 3. Now stir the onions every few minutes. This takes time…30 to 40 minutes. The onions will slowly turn a beautiful caramel color and become sweet and amazing. Your patience will be rewarded. 4. Do not be tempted to crank up the heat as you will only burn the onions. For the tart: Store bought thin crust pizza shell Caramelized onions 1 pear, thinly sliced

3-4 pieces of prosciutto sliced 1 package of goat cheese

1. Cover the bottom of the pizza shell with the caramelized onions 2. Lay the thinly sliced pear evenly over the onions 3. Spread the prosciutto over the pear 4. Top with small chunks of goat cheese 5. Bake in a 400 preheated oven for 20 minutes, I put my mine right on the over rack to ensure the bottom of the tart is crisp. 6. Allow to cool on a cooling rack them slice into small pieces and arrange on a platter. 7 . Arancini (Fried Risottos Balls) The last appetizer I made for the wedding was Arancini. These require a bit more time and energy, but they are the worth it. You need to make a basic risotto recipe first, cool it down and then add more cheese and form the rice into balls and deep fry them. This is a plain version, but feel free to add meat, shrimp or veggies to them. Enjoy!! Basic Risotto: 1 cup arborio rice 4 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 small onion, finely diced

2 cloves diced garlic 1 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 Tablespoons of butter Salt and pepper

1. In a pot heat up your chicken broth, do not boil it, just make sure it is hot. 2. In a shallow, wide pan over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. 3. Add your diced onion, garlic, salt and pepper. 4. Once the onions have softened, add the rice and stir to coat the rice with the butter for 2 minutes. 5. Add the white wine and stir until all the wine has been adsorbed. 6. Now, one ladle at a time, add the chicken broth. Do not add more broth unit the rice has absorbed all the broth in the pan. This whole process should take about 20 minutes. Keep your heat at a medium. If your heat is too high the liquid will not absorb into the rice properly. Pour yourself a glass of white wine and stay by the stove, stirring and adding broth. 7. Once all the broth has been used, taste your rice to make sure it is cooked though. It should be done but not mushy. 8. Turn off the heat, add the grated parmesan cheese and the last 1 tablespoon of butter. 9. Stir again to combine and taste for seasoning. 10. Pour your risotto mixture onto a cookie sheet and allow to cool completely. 11. The rice will firm up so you can form the balls. For the Arancini: 1 batch of Risotto 1 cup parmesan cheese 1 cup provolone cheese

1 egg 1 cup of bread crumbs Canola Oil for frying

1. Add your cooled risotto to a large bowl. 2. Add the cheeses and the egg. Mix gently to combine. 3. Using a small ice cream scoop, scoop rice into balls and toss in the bread crumbs. I made these small as they were an appetizer, but feel free to make them larger if they are going to be served as a meal. 4. Toss well to completely coat in the bread crumbs and place on a tray or baking sheet. Place the arancini in the fridge and allow them to firm up, while you heat up your oil. 5. In a large pot, add your oil. Do not fill the pot more than half way up for safety. Use a thermometer if you have one, to watch the temperature of your oil. Heat to 375. If you don’t have a thermometer, sprinkle a few bread crumbs in the oil, if it sizzles, the oil is ready. With a slotted spoon add 4 or 5 arancini at a time to the oil. Spin them around so they do not stick together. Once a nice golden brown, remove them from the oil and place on a cooling rack or sheet pan lined with paper towel. 6. Allow them to cool for a few minutes and serve with marinara. Delicious!! *These can be made, fried, cooled and put in the refrigerator and reheated in a 400 oven. They remained nice and crispy.

Her previous films This Land (adventure in the High Artic) and 40 Days at Base camp (a journey to Mount Everest) had been about bridging the gap between traditional ecological knowledge and western science and technology. Dianne explained, “Even with the most high-tech equipment a person cannot survive in these harsh places without the knowledge of the people who have lived there.” The idea to embark on the Great Trail came to Dianne after returning home from Everest. “I felt very disconnected, and in spiritual crisis. It was a crisis of the human spirit. The world stopped making sense to me. The rise of modern society and all our technology, while great is coming at such a cost. The oceans are full of garbage and anxiety is at it’s highest rates ever.” “I realized that maybe everything we need to know, we have forgotten. So, the Great Trail Journey is a search for that lost wisdom.” -26-

Dianne began her journey in Newfoundland, and I was honored to have had the chance to chat with her when she arrived in Saskatoon on May 15th, 2019. Already well into her journey, Dianne shared about some of the lessons learned and experiences she’s had thus far. Every morning begins with smudge prayers and wishes for the murdered and missing women. “I wanted to honor them and stand with them on this journey, and I believed that by doing this, it would guide my journey in reconciliation” Dianne shared that she thought she was travelling in the “old way” by paddling and hiking this journey, but it wasn’t until she met an Elder that explained to Dianne that she was indeed not travelling in the “old way.” He told her, “As you walk on the earth, with each step, you must say, as we do, the earth is

sacred, the earth is sacred. With each paddle stroke, the water is sacred, the water is sacred, and the journey is about what you carry in your heart.” Dianne said, “I do this now and it has changed the shape and perspective of my journey.”

"What I've learned is that for all of our differences, what brings us together as Canadians is this land. This trail, the longest in the world, connects us all to the land , and to each other." -Dianne Whelan

“The people I have met along my journey have been the greatest treasure” She explains that she did not know that she would meet any of the people she has met so far, but has had the honor of spending time with the Cree, Ojibwe, Dakota, Lakota, Mi’kmaq, and the Ashinabee peoples along her way. In places along the journey, Dianne has found herself alone for up to 10-12 days and she commented that “Being alone out there with no connection of any kind, really gives you the opportunity to become familiar with yourself and your surroundings, I’m talking to the birds and other animals and myself, she laughed, “Solitude reveals, what a mirror cannot.” When I asked Dianne if she had any words of wisdom for the Vintage Gypsy community, she said this, “As women, we need to seek out the sacred feminine spirit within each of us, we must strive to shift the world through spiritual equality.” Thank you Dianne and safe travels on the rest of your journey.

GYPSY TALES by: Ang McDonald

A huge part of my healing from past traumas, and one of my means of dealing with day-to-day life and stresses, is to get myself out into nature as often as my schedule allows. I find nature's healing a beautiful and empowering experience. Perhaps this is rooted in me and resonates so deeply because nature has always been my solace. In fact, my earliest memories are of horses, wildflowers, wilderness, walks along cattle trails, and listening to wolves howling in the (not-so-distant) distance. My grandmother used to give me crap for being reckless because I would lay down in the beds of straw in the pasture beside the new calves and their mamas. Tag with my siblings was in the tunnels we created between the round bales and we were admonished almost daily for endangering ourselves to the mercy of a slipping hay bale. Finding me basking in the mid-day sun along the grassy hill beside the beaver dam or watching the sunset while waiting to catch a glimpse of the family that inhabited that dam was also a daily occurrence. To be honest, I lived and breathed being in nature, and would spend countless hours on my horse, breathing in the fresh air and absorbing the scenery only to travel home at the end of the day with the reins tied around the horn of the saddle, laid back with

my head resting on the rump of my horse as relaxed as one could possibly get (I'm sure we even wondered into the farmyard a time or two with me fast asleep; we also had had occasions where Gypsy or E.J.,my horses, got home sans rider and I limped in many, many minutes behind them with my pride hurt more than my body.) When I was 14 years old, I experienced a few things that shook me to my core and I withdrew from every aspect of my previous life. Looking back, I honestly don't understand why as I would have benefited exponentially from simply allowing myself to process and heal in the safety of my outdoor sanctuary. Many life experiences and many years later I found myself able to rekindle my love for being in the simple beauty of all nature has to offer. I adore the simplicity of the experience Mother Nature provides: silently sitting on a fallen tree listening to the squirrels chatter at each other, laying on the grass watching the clouds drift and an eagle or hawk ride the wind's current, inhaling the sweet fragrance of the moss... I won't be presumptuous and tell you that you have to get outside so you can experience this same bliss and healing. Perhaps you find that peace elsewhere. What I will do is suggest you give it a try, absorb the beauty that is around us in even the smallest of details. Chase butterflies and dragonflies and wander into a simpler time and, if it feels right, embrace your inner gypsy and the wild wilderness sisterhood.

The Mother

A Legend by: Julianna Maggrah

“Mom, why is it called mother earth?” David asked as he gazed upon a grand tree that towered over him. His mother looked at him with a soft smile. “It’s quite a long story.” She explained. “A very long time ago there was a family. A father, a mother, and a son. The boy loved his mother very much and she loved him even more. She loved everyone. She was a very compassionate person, showed that compassion to everyone and everything she came across. She treated other children as though they were her own, all the people in their small village began to call her “mother”. Mother was so full of compassion, if she knew an animal suffered when it died, she would mourn for it. If she saw a flower beginning to wilt, she would pick and dry it so it could be used for decoration and continue to hold its beauty. She would watch the other children if one's parents had to go away. The children never wanted to leave her side. The young boy was never jealous, as he knew his mother had enough love for the whole world. Talk began of Mother becoming the new medicine woman as the other one was getting very old. Mother felt proud that the people thought so highly of her, but she would tell others that if she were the medicine woman, she would want to heal everyone on earth, not just the people in the village. The people knew that she was meant to be a healer for their people, no one else felt as intensely as she did. Mother began to fall Ill. The current medicine woman tried everything she could, but nothing was working. One day, Mother awoke from a nap and told her son to gather the people, she had something to say. The entire village gathered in and around Mother’s teepee, eager to hear what she had to say. They all hoped she would announce her recovery. Mother did not, she told the people that she had a dream. She was going to die soon, and they must bury her in the middle of the field near the lake. The people were in shock, they were certain Mother would pull through. That evening Mother died peacefully in her sleep; she did not suffer even for a moment. Her husband granted her wish and buried her near the lake. The whole tribe was in mourning for a long time, they felt something missing from their lives, they missed Mother's warm smile. One day, the boy went to visit Mother's grave and was surprised to see what he found. It was an enormous tree right where Mother was buried. He touched it and felt a sudden warmth through his body, the same feeling he would get when Mother comforted him. The boy fell to his knees and wept as he wrapped his arms around the tree, he missed that feeling so much. He ran to his village and told his father, word soon spread. The people realized that the tree was very special. The roots, leaves, amd bark all had medicinal powers. The boy knew that Mother's spirit was in the tree and all its surroundings. When the young boy grew to have a child of his own, he took his daughter to the tree and said, “this is Mother. She'll always be here for you, no matter what.” “So, does everything have Mother’s spirit? Every tree and every flower?” David wondered. “Yes.” His mother replied. “Everything has the spirit of Mother. So, be gentle with her.”

INSPIRED BY CANCER. SAVED BY LOVE. by: Chantelle Rodgers In August 2018, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. I immediately knew that cancer had come into my life to teach me something. My whole life had felt like such a struggle and I was now facing the battle of my life. I was afraid of dying but I was also aware of the fact that I had been wasting my life away by worrying and trying to control everything. I lived in constant fear and lack and the life I was living mirrored it. I was a divorced mom of two. I no longer believed in the business I had built but was afraid to leave it. I became addicted to dating unhealthy men. Life continued to fall apart around me until I was financially broke and totally miserable and unable to enjoy life. My kids drove me crazy when they were with me and I felt nothing but guilt and regret and shame when they were away. I could never get my shit together enough to make anything of my life. I was 44 years old and felt like a failure and a broken mess. Life was a constant struggle and I was at my breaking point. And then it happened - I was diagnosed with cancer. This was a battle I could not run from or put off until later - it was here, now, and I had to show up for myself - and I DID - I surrendered to cancer and allowed the universe to guide me through the toughest, yet most remarkable journey of my life. Long story short, I went through hell and back during cancer treatments, but I continued to fall apart and slowly rebuild. After my treatments were complete, I began to watch Kyle Cease again (kylecease.com) and was totally intrigued by his loving, authentic and real nature. I had been meditating for an hour a day for almost 3 years, but I was always connecting to something outside of myself. Kyle taught me to connect to ME. I didn’t want to connect inward because there was a shit tonne of pain and misery inside, I wanted to avoid. I knew the universe wasn’t pissing around anymore and cancer was the last shit show I needed to experience in order to take my healing seriously. I dove in fully and completely. I began meditating for 2 hours a day and hugged and loved and held the inner child I had ignored and tortured for years. She was beautiful, just truly beautiful. I fell in love with her. She was so full of pain from being neglected and rejected. I made her the most important person in my life and when I committed to caring for her, my life began to shift. I started enjoying life and believing I deserved more than what I was allowing myself to have.

www.chantellerodgers.com

My soul started speaking to me and I began listening. My soul’s calls were gentle and loving. All the years that I had followed my ego shouts and demands led to failure after failure and now through meditation, the call of my soul became so noticeable. I loved its gentle and loving nature. I loved how my soul wanted nothing for me but rest and joy. I stopped needing outward acceptance and support. I no longer cared about money and success and control. I wanted to allow the universe to carry me instead of the usual hustles and battles my ego convinced me were necessary. I began to see the truth about life from my soul’s perspective and it was so totally different than what the world had taught me. I listened to one of the hugest soul calls this year. I had no money, but I registered to see Kyle Cease in Omega for 4 days of meditating and expanding. Kyle worked with me and my stories of lack and even had me tell my story on stage with him. It was the most incredible experience of my life. I left Omega a different person. I am no longer a person full of stories of fear and lack. I am a person filled with love and possibilities. My heart feels so huge and full of beautiful, beautiful love. I see the amazing life I have. I connect with myself and my kids in a real and loving way. I have totally quit my old business that I no longer believe in. I see the beauty and the abundance available to me in every moment. I am love. I am life. I am amazing. I am taking 3 months to do absolutely nothing but meditate, rest, create, hike in the bush and play and enjoy. At Omega, Kyle offered to take my book to his publisher at Hay House and during these 3 months, I am going to write the incredible story of a broke and broken woman who found herself after her cancer journey. This story is going to prove to women that no matter what, all we need to do is find love for ourselves and we will attract pure love and magic into our lives. My story is going to be the story of a mom who is brave as fuck and scared as hell but never ever gives up on herself because she finally sees her value and worth. I am going to show how LOVING + GIVING + PLAYING is the most important job we have. I am totally inspired by people like Kyle Cease but my journey is also going to inspire others to live a truly INSPIRE(D) life. Join me on this incredible journey by following my Facebook page. I promise you, it’s going to be full of delicious magic as I share my honest, messy, and uncomfortable truths with you along the way.

Come and experience new people and places through my words (and a few pictures). My dream is that you will all see the world and others in a clearer and more understanding light. My hope is that my insight will help everyone to know that no matter where we come from or how different we may seem, we all have a life to live and a story to tell that is worthy of others to listen, understand and admire. Love Ya Lorna

Her Strength I didn't cry or scream. The tears held captive But you heard my fear, You fed my fear With exhausting torment And cut ties to a happy name. You bent my heart And misshaped my dignity. My pride was lost And my shame was called to dance. Ambitions Wrapping their wings to protect. Only comfort; Colours of the rainbow, Soft music, Catches these dreams And sings a sad song. Follow the melody But leave him at the door. Blackness fills the space. Find reason to do something And count as the time ticks by. A woman slapped to the ground Stands, wipes her face And holds onto one day at a time. To a lonely keeper Her cage will shine And with the right avenue She may find her strength.

Knock, knock, knocking on Wisdom's Door

by: Dawn Kotzer

If you're reading this? I KNOW you're like me, a wayfinder on the wisdom path. Even though we let unrealistic expectations and fear of uncertainty create doubt along the way, we are absolutely walking toward wisdom. Lucky for us, there's more than one door into the world of Wisdom. The trick is to let go of what you think the door should look like. Difficult to define, wisdom merges knowledge, selfawareness, experience and

-41-

the ability to release judgement. It navigates uncertainty, riding the ups and downs of life with a sense of equilibrium. Most of all, it's a felt experience. In other words, we know it when we feel it. Â But the journey to wisdom? Frick. Feeling anything but peaceful, it's like hiking rocky terrain wearing shoes too small for us. We often arrive in worse shape than when we started. And we're positive we didn't step through any door. Where's the door?Â

Like I said, the trick is to let go of thinking we know what the door should look like. Wisdom doors might appear as the luxurious afterglow of sex or the bitter taste of envy. We feel their presence in the joy of a laughing child or the silence of a bedside vigil. These doors materialize in a rant, a cry, a hike from hell, a song or act of rebellion. Fluent in the language of intuition and dreamtime, wisdom appears when you least expect it and operates outside of time, delivering a message years before we can make sense of it. Then one day, Shazzam! That long-ago message holds the key that unlocks the wisdom door that just popped up on our path. Hi. I'm Dawn Kotzer and I live below a hill, below a hill in the almost wilderness, Saskatchewan. Tucked between the Boreal Forest and the shores of Tobin Lake, I live up close and personal with Mother Nature and the Universal Laws she commands. That I landed here can still surprise me. It shouldn't. I had a premonition when I was 12 years old of this wild space being my HOME. Seems I've been walking towards this wisdom door for decades. But getting here? That was a different kind of wild. An adventure I don't ever want to repeat but one I wouldn't have missed for the world. I was born into a family dynamic cobbled from gifts of curiosity, creativity, humour, enthusiasm, ambition tied up with chaos, perfectionism, trauma, blame & shame. I learned coping strategies that weren't especially healthy. I used blame to self soothe. Projecting pain onto others eased my harsh, dysfunctional inner dialogues. Self-sabotage was my Go-To M.O. It was easier to NOT follow through, to feel the familiar disappointment, self-doubt and low self esteem than test the waters of uncertainty. For the most part having success made me very uncomfortable.

-42-

"I am a lover of what is, not because I'm a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality." -Byron Katie

Curiously, on rare occasions I'd choose something so aligned with who I was at my core and step past my dysfunction, into a calming self-respect. Operating my own businesses allowed me the freedom to follow my nose, use my intuition and hone my instincts. I thrived as a creative entrepreneur. My 'imagine-researchcreate-test-review- improve-deliver' structure built a sense of business wisdom I could trust.

Apparently, I could. Fed up with my people pleasing, perfectionistic, over-promising, soulweary, low-esteem self I sold my floral design/home decor business and a short while later moved away from home and family. The unexpected consequence of that was painful separations from my son. Part of me felt free while the rest of me struggled with feelings of shame and sorrow.

But in other areas of life I'd choose projects, people and adventures that validated my relentless poor sense of self. Sigh. The results always validated my limiting belief.

Ugh. A Wisdom door can also look like sorrow.

Luckily one day an odd, somewhat trivial thing happened and brought me face to face with myself. I was at a party with business friends swapping camping stories and mentioned how much I missed tenting and longed to get out into the forest again. No one believed me. Not a single person. All they could see were my stilettos, fancy clothes and urban storefronts. The more I tried to explain, the more they laughed. Ouch. The real me was invisible. And that was all on me. I'd strategically kept her hidden from view for years. In that moment I knew I was standing on the threshold of choice. In retrospect, I see it was a wisdom door. Could I dare to go through it?

To find a way to heal, to forgive myself for choices made and respectfully re-parent myself, I stopped arguing with reality and came to accept the way life was. As Byron Katie says, "I am a lover of what is, not because I'm a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality." She's right. To argue with reality is to be in pain all. the. time. Awareness of my childhood family dynamics fueled the determination needed to create a life I didn't feel I had to escape from. Building this be real—find freedom life meant giving myself permission to practice self-kindness. (It took a lot of practice.) I discovered a Wisdom door looks like kindness. About this time I was invited to move up to the Boreal wildwoods. Coincidence? No way. Every wisdom door I'd knocked on throughout my life opened me to the healing magic of the forest. I'm convinced we're all walking the path of wisdom. Is it easy? No. But it's easier than you think. Here are 4 things that can help you along.

1) Permission We get to do a lousy job in the beginning, to try things that pull us forward, not push us into line. Give yourself permission to use your beginner's mind, to fail, to make mistakes. 2) Vulnerability is Courage Courage grows in direct proportion to our willingness to be vulnerable. Yeah, feeling vulnerable sucks. But if like me, you have a shame & blame history, vulnerability is the heart-healing guide needed to learn that our truth tastes like freedom. 3) Curiosity Curiosity, sidekick of imagination helps shine a light on our fears and minimize their power over us. Go ahead, follow your nose and take small steps to satisfy your creative soul. 4) Peace Did you know that peace has a higher frequency in our body than love or joy? There is a space within us that is always at peace and requires little from us other than a willingness to show ourselves the same kindness and empathy we show others. Love might make the world go around but peace powers our soul-r light. Wisdom and peace are both felt experiences. To be at peace is to walk with the wisdom that makes a be real—find freedom life possible. Remember, you are never more than one peaceful thought away from knowing you are knocking on wisdom's door. The wisdom in me sees the wisdom in you. Peace in. Peace out. Dawn

Having cancer inspired me to change my life. I knew the universe wasn’t pissing around anymore and it was time to take life seriously and do what I needed to in order to find the joy and abundance I always hoped for. For 12 years, I studied, practiced and taught Energy medicine + Spirituality but fighting for my life taught me that there is no outside pill or session or God that was going to save me from the life of misery I had experienced. I had to find and connect to my inner self in order to truly find and feel love. Daily meditation and connecting to my inner child (my soul) has completely transformed my life and given me the tools necessary to always find inner peace and love and joy. Life is messy and full of surprises but when we learn to feel our emotions instead of run from them: when we learn to accept and surrender to life: when we connect to + listen to our inner child (our soul): when we rest and enjoy + play: when we sit and notice our thoughts instead of engage with them - LIFE UNFOLDS. We expand. We become love. We become abundance. We become a co-creative force. I will be offering sessions and workshops in September, sharing the tools I have used to transform my life of fear + lack to a life filled with love + possibilities.
