Coast has no confidence in Mayor he FAOC (Federation of Associations of the Orihuela Costa) has once again told the Orihuela mayor, Emilio BascuĂąana that they have no confidence either his management or that of his government team in relation to their dealings with residents on the Orihuela Costa.

They say that despite all the promises at the beginning of his legislature there continues to be inadequate investment and the lack of a public services policy. The absence of both of these are still very much evident on the coast.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, they reminded the Mayor of the numerous motions approved in municipal plenary meetings, which are still pending implementation.

There has been absolutely no movement with the construction of a bridge over the AP7,

the accident black spot leading along Calle Cabo Creus, from La Regia toward Lomas de Cabo Roig and the Fuente Commercial Centre, despite its development being assured (Plenary 29-10-15).

Promises regarding improvements to the state of the parks and their future relationship with the Spanish Association

of Public Parks (Plenary 2611-15) remain unfulfilled, as do repairs and the upgrading of the road between La Zenia and VillamartĂ­n (Plenary 25-2-16); There has likewise been no movement in relation to find-

ing a solution to the problems surrounding the accumulation of rainwater in la calle El Carmen de La Zenia, which runs beachside of the N332 (Plenum of 29-9-15).

Other non-compliances, which are of no less importance include: the repair of the cliffs and the coastal walkway between Cabo Roig and Cala Capitan; The outstanding repairs and asphalting of many local roads and streets despite "repeated announcements of funding by the mayor and the coordinator of the coast"; The provision and repair of refuse containers in many areas, "promised by the Department of Road Cleaning, as well as the cleaning of containers in all areas, which is rarely carried out"; The designation of the beach of La Caleta (Cabo Roig) as a winter beach, "it is completely abandoned during the off-season months"; Improvements to the frequency and quality of urban cleaning and sanitation, "both of which remain inadequate due to a lack of staff and equipment, and which, during the last summer, resulted in a serious lack of hygiene never before seen on the coast."

The FAOC say that they find it difficult "to accept the current shortage of municipal budgetary resources for investments in the coast, particularly in view of the regular statements emanating from Orihuela relating to the receipt of subsidies from other organisations, like the Generalitat or the Delegation of Alicante".

They also state that the IBI (Property tax), "is another disturbing issue for coastal residents, especially in view of the 20% increase that had to pay in 2016, especially following a period which have seen inflation and wage increases far below that figure.”

The FAOC statement also referred to, "the concern of many residents with regard to the high urban growth that is occurring on the Orihuela Costa, which will undoubtedly lead to an increase in demands and far more pressure being put on the infrastructure and services that are already struggling to cope. This problem is likely to become even more serious with the recent announcement of the construction of 1,500 homes in Cala Mosca, thus denying residents and visitors alike one of the few remaining and most beautiful natural landscapes on the Spanish Levante.

The constant unimportance attached to the area by the mayor and his councillors is now beginning to realise an increase in "social alarm" felt by the residents of the coast " the result of which is a steady increase in the number of complaints being directed toward the FAOC, most of which question the ability of the current government to address and to solve the current problems ".

However a spokesman for the group said that following the severe damage caused recently to the beaches and some internal areas, as a result of the December rains,

book ‘Formby’s Lost Love’ written by Los Montesinos author Andrew Atkinson.

“Preston Movie Makers are very

interested in making a film from the book 'Formby's Lost Love', published 2015, that tells the tearful and sad story of George Formby's fiancee Pat Howson,” said Andrew.

Religious education teacher Pat Howson was engaged to Formby on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1961, but the Wigan born film, comedy and singing star died on March 6, 1961, following a heart attack, aged 56.

Pat Howson, who purchased an engagement ring - only days before Formby passed away died, aged 46, of ovarian cancer, on November 22, 1971: “I am looking at film scene locations.

Thereafter the script and the shooting of locations are to be finalised,” said Andrew.

The planned film comes after 'Formby's Lost Love' was acknowledged by The Queen in 2016, who is a big fan of Formby, whose hits include When I'm Cleaning Windows; My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock and Leaning On A Lamppost.

Formby became a friend of the Howson family through Pat's father Fred Howson, the general manager of Loxhams, Preston, where he purchased Rolls Royce and Bentley cars during his heyday, during the 1930s-40s.

Independent company Preston Movie Makers have produced movies on a limited budget.

Andrew said: “The budget will depend on interested businesses who want to get involved.

“Once the cast, script and location details are finalised actors will begin shooting scenes for the film.”

Busiest festive season yet for Spangles Chorus

pangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus love to get into the festive spirit in the lead up to Christmas and this year has been exceptional for the ladies, who have been raising charity funds in several venues.

“This has been our busiest year yet for requests to sing at peoples Christmas celebrations” said Wendy Grant, Chorus Musical Director.

The holiday season started with three events – the first at the Spanglish Bar in Balsicas, with the ladies helping turn on the Christmas lights. This was swiftly followed by a Christmas Fair at the Palm Lounge in Cabo de Palos, raising money for a local animal rescue charity. Two days later, they were singing their hearts out at the Cruz Azul animal charity’s Christmas Fair at the Bulevar Oasis in Los Alcázares.

Spangles held their traditional Christmas Concert at the town hall in Los Alcázares on 9 December and were delighted to help Crescendo Choir raise a staggering 975€ for Age Concern at a concert in Torrevieja the following day.

“Our favourite venue was yet to come” commented Lyn Baines, CoChorus Manager. “We were delighted to sing for the residents and staff of the Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo. They always give us a warm welcome and it’s a pleasure to sing for them each year.”

But it wasn’t over! From Pozo Aledo, Spangles went on to sing a private ladies’ lunch in Sucina!

After a short Christmas break and with many still visiting family, a small group of Spangles chorus members entered a carol competition featuring local traditional choirs and bands. This was organised by

the Asociación Cultural Bahía Traíña.

“It was an honour to be offered the opportunity to demonstrate the barbershop style of singing to a new Spanish audience” remarked Wendy “And we were delighted with third place in our first non-barbershop contest.”

2017 looks like being another busy year for Spangles who will be straight back into rehearsals at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares in January, as they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April. They will also be representing SABS at the European contest in the UK in October.

Three Kings fill unique celebration with magic

S

anta Claus is quite well-known as he delivers toys and presents, but the real stars in Spain are los Reyes. These Three Kings are the ones who followed a star to meet the new King of Kings (Baby Jesus) and offered three presents: gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn child in Belén (Bethelem).

The Day was celebrated last week with colourful parades held across the entire country. However, as the three biblical wise men paraded through the streets there was tightened security in many of Spain’s major city’s.

In Madrid the authorities deployed 800 police officers, some heavily armed, they erected concrete barriers to block access to streets and they also curbed the movement of trucks following the December attack in Berlin on a Christmas market.

Locally the celebrations were much lower key with just about all going off without any problems or major incident.

In Torrevieja, as has been customary for many years, the arrival of the kings took place via the fishing port during the late afternoon. They arrived on a boat belonging to the local firm Marítimas Torrevieja and were greeted by many hundreds of young children along with the Mayor and the

Councillor for Fiestas, Domingo Perez.

After the customary welcomes the kings distributed over 20,000 kilos of sweets and hundreds of small toys as they processed their way to the main church square where they were welcomed by a living nativity.

Mayor Emilio Bascuñana received Orihuela’s 3 Kings at City Hall while on the Orihuela Costa the parade, which got underway from the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, was also attended by many thousands of residents. The procession made its way to La Zenia Boulevard where the evening continued on the main stage with performances by local entertainers.

For the second year running the celebrations in San Miguel de Salinas included an expat king as one of their three majesties where the town parade finished at the Casa del Cultura.

The kings then spent over an hour handing out presents to 200 local children and elsewhere, during their short time in the region, the kings were also hard at work as they visited local hospitals, children’s and old people’s homes where they continued to fill this unique celebration with lots of magic for young and old alike.

Groups unite in bid to save Cala Mosca J ust about every action group, neighbourhood association and political party with an interest in the Cala Mosca building development got together last week to discuss the forthcoming construction of 1500 properties on the very last kilometre of the Orihuela Costa coastline.

The two most vocal organisations in the area, the FAOC-Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa and CLARO - Partido para Orihuela Costa, met with groups, including representatives from Podemos and Cambiemos Orihuela, where everyone was updated on the very latest situation as well as discussing the best way forward in a combined effort to block the project that would put even more pressure on the area’s already overworked infrastructure.

The very final stage of the construction project of more than 1,500 apartments in Cala Mosca, formally called 'Alameda del Mar', is currently under pub-

lic consultation. For many years, action by environmental groups, neighborhood associations and political parties (which even took the matter to the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions) has objected to the development on ecological grounds.

The area shelters protected species of flora and fauna and even a micro-reserve of the plant "jarilla cat head", which they say must be protected at all costs.

The meeting agreed on the need to convene mobilise all other neighborhood groups and residents within the coming days, so that people are able to express their rejection of a project that will see yet another massive construction model that has already proven a failure from the social, environmental and economic point of view. Once again, they say, we are faced with the threat that, finally and despite all the efforts, the last kilometre of virgin beach of the municipality of Orihuela will be buried under thousands of tons of cement.

Natural Park restricts access The management of the natural park in La Mata is restricting access to many areas during the coming weeks while staff carry out maintenance work to the tracks and roads in large parts of the protected area.

Ghostbusters in Vega Baja Hospital

The aim is to stop the deterioration of the pinewood forests and adjoining trails in La Mata which are suffering from constant use by cyclists, motorcycles, horse riders, quad bikes and even cars, and many of which which are in areas that are unauthorised for public use.

The Children’s wards of the Vega Baja Hospital got a surprise visit last week when members of the 'Ghostbusters United España' group, fans of the 1984 film starring Bull Murray and Dan Ackroyd, turned up with presents on the eve of 3 Kings Day,

The works are being carried out by the public company Vaersa. They include the erection of wooden fencing around pine areas and zones that are very busy and suffer from years of deterioration because of their intensive use.

The Ghostbusters visited all of the children throughout the entire hospital making sure that every single one got a gift.

ow many of you remember Women of Fire? This group consisted of ladies that were in business or recently retired and we met once a month to network, support each other in every business need, have speakers within the group and all done over an enjoyable lunch. Many ladies came every month and found the group helpful to them for various reasons.

After seven years, sadly Women of Fire have now extinguished but out of the ashes FOXY LADIES have risen and we are having our first lunch on Friday 27th January at The Banana Tree in Quesada.

As Foxy Ladies, the lunches will be informative, fun, a relaxed way of lunching but still supporting each other. You don´t have to be in business to attend but be like-minded so please bring along a friend or colleague so that we can have a good number attending each month. The difference will be that we can discuss amongst ourselves the direction that we can take, and ways of raising money for charities and that some of you may want to organise the lunch venue of your choice at times. If you do have a business and want to promote any event, or promotion and want to speak to the group, then that will be encouraged each time...so bring leaflets and cards. Any charity

The Rojales sanctuary rescued the donkey, named Dulce Dawn, on Boxing Day in a joint operation with San Javier police, even as the centre itself battled major flooding caused by a week of wet and wild weather.

Dulce Dawn had been found crudely tied to prevent her from moving, with rope wrapping from her head to her front and back legs. A shocking video depicting the hobbled donkey, posted on the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s Facebook page, attracted international condemnation.

The Councillor for Animal Protection, Carmen Morate, has said that the preliminary draft of the municipal budget for 2017 will include an investment of 350,000 euros, which will be used to carry out improvement work and the expansion of the Municipal Animal Shelter.

There were more than 400 animals received in the shelter, many of them chipped, which enabled them to be returned to their owners, however, 3 puppies had to be put down after an outbreak of parvovirus that affected many of the animals during the summer.

The works would extend the area up to 3,150 square meters, adding adjacent parcels of land that now occupy the municipal cars pound.

Councillor Morate said that the shelter is currently housing 29 dogs and 23 cats. In an appeal to the public she asked, particularly at this time of the year, that people are responsible toward their pets, saying that they are not toys just to be given and quickly forgotten.

The councillor said that the project will include new accommodation for the temporary shelter of small animals, also a space for horses, as well as an aviary for birds. Morate said that there is already a project

Zenia Boulevard marks 50 millionth visitor

La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre celebrated the arrival of its 50 millionth visitor just prior to Christmas since it first opened its doors in September 2012 with the unsuspecting shopper rewarded with a trip to New York valued at three thousand euros.

The figure was reached on 23 December which was marked by numerous events including bands and various shows in order to celebrate the occasion.

Almudena Soubrier, Chief Executive of the Zenia Boulevard, thanked all the visitors who have visited the mall since it first opened on the Orihuela Costa "as they are the people who have enabled the centre to become so full of life and to achieve such success. Now we look forward to an even bigger party when we reach the next milestone of 100 million.”

HAND GRENADE FOUND BY ALICANTE SCHOOL The National Police are investigating the discovery of a hand grenade after they were alerted to the object close to a school in Alicante by a woman who was walking her dog.

The find occurred last Monday evening with the area immediately cordoned off by agents from the e Provincial Security Brigade.

EOD experts (Tedax) found the grenade to be of Polish origin, but it was in a very decayed lacking both the ring and the safety pin.

Once the condition was verified, the Tedax officers removed the grenade for later destruction in the facilities of the Explosive Deactivation Group of the National Police in Alicante.

FLOOD DAMAGE OFFICE OPENS The deputy mayor, Rafael Almagro, said on Tuesday that the office for people affected by the floods is now open in Orihuela City and will remain so until 20 January. Staff will provide information on the subsidies currently available from the Ministry of Interior The office is located in the Department of Development and Agriculture, C/Adolfo Clavarana, 6, and is open from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 1pm.

Spain UK Ambassador recalled Spain’s opposition parties are demanding the removal from office of the country’s Ambassador to the UK Federico Trillo and it now looks very likely that their demands might well be met.

It seems that Span are now in the process of initiating his recall after his dismissal was demanded by both the opposition and relatives of 62 Spanish peacekeepers who died when their Russian-built plane crashed as they returned from Afghanistan.

The crash occurred in 2003 following which mistakes were made with the identification of a number of the bodies with 30 families being given the wrong remains. Gen Vicente Navarro, who led the medical team that flew to Turkey to repatriate the bodies, was given a 3 year jail sentence following the debacle, but Trillo is being held as ultimately responsible as he was defence minister at the time.

Trillo’s replacement is taking place as part of a general reshuffle of top diplomatic posts although the Association of Victims of the Yak-42 Flight said in a statement that it would not accept Trillo’s recall being disguised as part of a routine recall of diplomats, adding that it opposed an outcome

where he was offered another job elsewhere.

The opposition Socialist, Podemos and Ciudadanos parties, as well as pressure groups linked to relatives of the victims, hold Trillo responsible for what they regard as the fiasco of the crash and its aftermath.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASED TO 23.50 EUROS PER DAY From 1 January 2017 the Council of Ministers has raised the National minimum wage to 707.70 euros per month, an 8% rise. It also approved a 0.25% increase in public pensions, as established by the General Social Security Act. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Rajoy at a press briefing in the Moncloa Palace The minimum wage in Spain is now 23.59 euros per day or 9,907.80 euros per year.

Rajoy highlighted that "this increase, agreed with the Socialist Group, is the highest in 30 years and is possible thanks to the general state of the Spanish economy".

Alicante hospitals quickest to discharge patients Hospitals in the Alicante province are now the fastest in the country when it comes to discharging their patients.

The average hospital stay is now 5.43 days, the lowest figure in the last decade, compared to and average of 6.66 days nationwide. In the case of the Valencia Province the average stay is 5.51 days and in Castellón it is 6.05 days.

Health officials consider this to be a positive indicator showing that there has been a low rate of

complications with fewer adverse effects.

This practice also helps to further the patient’s recovery in their home environment as well as reducing income and health expenditure.

Amongst the other information to be drawn from the most recent hospital study issued by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) the report also shows that the largest number of hospital stays in the country is due to diseases of the circulatory or the cardiovascular system.

With regard to the longest admissions figures show that average hospital stays for mental disorders due to drug and alcohol consumption are 18.75 days, bacterial pathologies 14.60 and HIV infections 13.44 days. By contrast, childbirth care only involves three days of admission.

A spokesman at Alicante Hospital said that the main factor influencing these good results is less aggressive surgical interventions as a result of which the recovery time of the patient is shorter.

QuironSalud is best Private Hospital The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja is the best private hospital in the Valencian Community, according to the Hospital Excellence Index of the Instituto Coordenadas.

The report analyses the standard of healthcare provided in both public and private hospitals, as well as the quality of care and opinions of 1,450 professionals who work in the centres, or in their environment. The results were based on information collected in November and December of this year.

Hospital excellence implies the sum of quality of care, hospital service, well-being and patient satisfaction, personal attention and efficiency of resources.

According to Jesús Sánchez Lambás, executive vice president of Instituto Coordenadas and Director of the IEH 2016 project, the objective of this initiative is to reward excellence, innovation and social welfare of hospitals since health care is considered as one of the basic pillars of the welfare state.

"Having now obtained the grading of “excellent” this result consolidates Quirónsalud as the highest quality private healthcare group in Spain, according to the announcement in which the Instituto Coordenadas thanks the group for achieving "a new impetus which is constantly improving the treatment that the health system is able to provide to patients".

VALENCIAN COMMUNITY HOSTED 8 MILLION FOREIGN TOURISTS IN 2016

If confirmed, it would mark a new record, with 8.8% more tourists and an increase in spending to over 6.7 billion euros.

The Tourism Secretary, Francesc Colomer, said that the figures show that services, facilities and destinations offered by the Comunitat are exactly what visitors are looking for and that the "double-digit growth during the off-season shows that efforts by tourism agents are also bearing fruit in terms of a more even seasonal spread, which is very positive in ensuring that tourism a dynamic, all year round, activity which will have a far greater economic impact, particularly with the generation of employment ".

He said that the results lead us to believe that, with the inclusion of the December data, the year will close, with the Community having hosted about eight million international tourists, an increase of more than 16% over 2015 ".

All of the markets showed some growth in November, with the exception of the British market that was about the same as last year, 2015.

Catalonia (17 million), the Balearic Islands (12.9 million) and the Canaries (12 million) were the regions that attracted the most tourists during the first eleven months of the year, with increases of 3.8%, 12% and 12.7 % respectively.

The Regional Secretary of Tourism said that the Valencian Tourism Agency was extremely encouraged by the results and now plans to carry out an "extensive assortment of promotional activities during 2017" aimed at "generating addition tourists throughout the year to coastal destinations as well as to those in the city and inland with

There were 14 swimmers this year, including Carl and Simon Morton, his son-in-law and Grandson that were crazy enough to take the plunge in the, much colder then normal, sea.

Because of the recent storms we have had the sea was colder and very rocky underfoot.

From the swimmers sponsorship and money collected on the day, and a raffle which will take place on the presentation night, 26th January at the Blarney Stone, hopefully the total will be around €2500.

I

received a message from Joyce and Henry in the Costa Blanca this week, who are relatively new expats in Spain. They asked me for any advice that I could give them about getting to know people, as they were finding life quite lonely in their new home.

I know that some expats will disagree, but the fact is that for many expats in Spain, their social life exists around a purely bar and restaurant culture. Although this can be an acceptable way of making new friends for those who like bars, it can be a tedious waste of time for others. In smaller communities, such as the Canary Islands, where the choice of social activities is even more limited than Peninsular Spain, there are clear dangers in developing both a sedentary, if not alcoholic lifestyle, which are particularly unhealthy as we get older. On the darker side, we have lost a number of acquaintances in recent years through alcohol abuse, although the victims rarely accepted that they had a drink problem.

When we lived in the Costa Blanca, we found ourselves in virtually an all expat community. Whilst there were some downsides in not getting to know the real Spain, it offered considerable advantages in that we had a social network all up and ready to go. This was a huge advantage; we met many wonderful and interesting people, some of whom we are still regularly in contact with. 'Balcony Hopping' became the order of the day, as neighbours would spot us sitting on our balcony in the evening, and there was always an instant invitation to "join us for a drink". I shall never forget the kindness of so many people that helped us to settle easily into expat life.

Later, as we became more confident with the language and culture, we were ready to move to an allSpanish community. However, for many expats, this can present a major problem. The Canarians, and indeed many Spanish, are totally family orientated and despite their courtesy and friendship on the surface, it is often difficult for many expats to make the friendships and relationships with their neighbours that they may be used to in the UK. This is, of course, one of the many reasons why expats gravitate towards communities representing their own nationality, which in turn leads to some criticism from our Look out for music groups, hosts that we are not ‘joining in’ clubs and flamenco dancing and we are 'keeping ourselves to classes that are often offered by Town Halls ourselves'.

Quesada Bowls Club December has seen the final games of the first half of the winter leagues and it is pleasing to say that the Pearls are topping the first Division and the Diamonds the third division of the South Alicante League. In the Southern League our Swallows are also in first place.

On the 10th December many of our members gathered at The Club for our annual Dinner Dance which was a very successful event, with an excellent Xmas Dinner followed by dancing the night away to the fabulous duo Diverse.

On 16th December we held the Xmas Mufti Triples tournament and all the members did us proud with their Christmas outfits, with the prize for the best lady going to Cathy Skinner and the prize to the best man, a really resplendent Father Christmas, Tony Goddard.

The tournament winners were Tanya Oliver, Steve Fedtschyschack and Derek Sale. The event was followed by an excellent buffet.

The 29th & 30th December we hosted our annual Chrisyear Aussie Pairs tournament, with 24 competing pairs. This was a highly competitive event with some excellent bowling throughout the two days.

The eventual winners were Deidre Leeming and Peter Morgan, winning on an extra end in the final against Pete & Lisa Bonsor who had returned for the Xmas holidays from their new home in Australia.

Carp R Us Extraordinary General meeting Following over a decade of service to the club, both John and Angela Brightling have stepped down from their respective roles as President and Treasurer. On behalf of the members can I take this opportunity to thank them for all they have done for the club over the years, it is much appreciated.

As a result, the club will be holding an EGM on Sunday 15th January at 11.00 am at its HQ, Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off the N322 between La Mata and Guardamar.

The match on 5th January, Round 5 of the Winter Series, was fished on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura. Although conditions during the match were very good, light wind and very mild, the fish were not interested in feeding. Roy Dainty won his first series match with 1.18kg, a single mullet caught on bread flake and waggler. Second equal were Steve Collins and Graham Ledley with 0.64kg (all bleak) and fourth was Geoff tempest with 0.60kg, a single small carp.

Well a few teams were somewhat depleted this early on in the New Year and as such, The Hub v Massey’s game is being rescheduled.

The Hen’s Teeth Chicks only had 4 players but they turned up and put in a plucky performance against the Pint Depot Queens to secure a draw. El Capitan reported for duty at the Ale House but Karl didn’t have enough for a team on the night and so all 12 points are awarded to El Capitan (TBC).

Junction Jaguars got a hardfought draw against Evolution Chadwick. He and team mates Martin Hastings and Phil Waller (100 (yrs)) were first up against Captain Poo Schofield and ex-captains Tracey Simpson and Simone de Lacy (98), but alas all that experience could not hold back the tide and Evo’s took the first leg courtesy of Chadwick’s S19-D17. Evo’s Kain Hickman (76, D20), Sandra Chadwick (85) and Seyhan Rumanor took the second leg too from a fresh and mended Gail Todd (79), Luscious Lisa Ivill and Wendy Woo Hayward. The little Lelly-Bear Eagles (80, 70), Sneeze Green and de Lacy faced the first Evo’s trio again and succumbed to a high-scoring onslaught from all 3 players with a 2nd check-out from master Ron on D7.

On to the doubles and Wendy Woo and our Captain Poo scooped the first win for the ladies with Poo’s first shot at D1. This was quite an achievement against some fine scoring from opponents, notably Waller’s 100 and 140. But Ron ‘Chadders’ Chadwick was not going to let that go and he and Hastings took back the 2nd doubles with some fine scoring from the captain 70, 61, 85 and a D2 finish to beat Lelly-Bear (78) and Simpson (101) who did try their best…eventually after captain Poo told them to buck their ideas up if they wanted to play in the singles. The Jaguars then clawed back another win in the final pairs match with Todd (95) and de Lacy’s 80, D14 clincher

over Sandra and Kain.

After Luscious Lisa’s Lasagne and cheesy garlic bread- there really ought to be a prize for the best darts grub- the big cats came back fighting (and farting) to take the first 4 singles! Wendy Woo (76, 68, 63 D20) v Sandra Chadwick (65); Super Lelly-Bear (70, 95, 60, 98, D9) v Kain Hickman; Gail Todd (80, 74, 57, 71, 67, D13) v Phil Waller (81, 140, 57) and finally Tracey Simpsons (68, 54, D8) v Hastings (57, 57, 76, 95) – well you can tell where he throws for!

So at 6-4 to the ladies they only had to secure 1 win from the final two legs but alas it wasn’t to be as, once again, Captain Chadders came to the rescue with a mighty (100, 99, S14-D5-D15) against de Lacy (65, 73). In the final game, Captain Poo 66, 121, 62) was 200 points clear of opponent Seyhan Rumanor but could she find the finish, could she heck and he just managed to secure the draw for the opposition with a first dart at D16. A night of good fun and banter was had by all, especially when Waller suggested that he be allowed to throw from in front of the ockey as it was more comfortable for him!

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB

I wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2017 and may your bowling get better and better.

Just a quick note on Andrew. Thanks for all the contributions for his electric wheelchair, he is using it now. Not doing wheelies yet but gives his carer a race. Walks about half a mile, showers and dresses, can make a cup of tea and a sandwich. Still cannot communicate verbally and hasn’t any movement in his right arm but is brill compared to this time last year so many thanks. Bowls has some good news as well, Winter League went to Vistabella and the Berleen Team came away with a great win 21 – 8.

So well done to Alex Whyte, Jim Freeman, Mike Surch and Dave Bulfield. The main team managed their usual score of losing 10 – 2 but glad to say we are still not bottom of the league. Our two points came from our Captain’s rink, Dave Hadaway, Carol Smith, Jean Tregoing and Gina Hindle. Roy Hart and fellow bowlers, Steve Hindle, Paul Tregoing and Kathy Manning lost by the smallest of margins while Colin Armitage, Dave Taylor, Lynn Armitage and Mo Taylor just lost by three shots. Thank you to all those players who came in to help our Captain out while others where freezing in the UK. Very nice of the Captain to greet some of us as we arrived at the Airport !!!! Best of luck to all of our teams in the second half of the season. Don’t forget the magic word…. Practice.

New Years Day saw The Silly B*ggers Roll Up, where 28 bowlers managed to shake off their bad heads and had an enjoyable crazy mornings bowling. Many thanks to Cheers Bar for supplying bottles of CAVA, and Janet and Eileen for mince pies, and to Alan for organising the event.

The Demise of La Peraleja?

If you have read this golf column over the last few years you will be aware of the on-going problems in respect of the course condition at La Peraleja but things appear to have taken a dramatic turn for the worse.

When the Seve Ballesteros designed course at La Peraleja was first opened to the public it was very exclusive and very expensive at circa €90 to walk the course and was touted to be one of the best golf courses in the region.

Unfortunately due to salt contamination on a number of the fairways resulting in large bare patches and minimal growth the course condition has deteriorated in recent years and accompanying this was a large reduction in the green fee rate to only circa €30 including a buggy and with this limited income it has proven difficult to generate the circa €350k necessary to repair the course.

There were rumours in recent months of interested parties looking to purchase the course for approx €4m or alternatively to lease the course but none of these have come to fruition.

Only recently local golf agents were notified by the authorities of financial difficulties that the course had with them which is always a bad sign.

I have since been informed by a client of mine that they tried to play the course but were told that the course was closed until further notice.

No announcement has been made by the course management and the telephone lines have been cut so I have no way to verify the situation.

However I fear for the future and if you have bookings as individuals or as a society you may find it necessary to rebook elsewhere.

I will endeavour to find more factual information and seriously hope that the course can get over whatever problems that they have and will keep you updated accordingly.

Campoamor welcomes T.M.G.S. for its first monthly visit of 2017 Yes, we are scheduled to play here the 1st Wednesday in every month for the whole of 2017. We have a completely new schedule and are making frequent visits to those courses that give us a warm welcome, so out

with the old and in with the new! This course is improving on every visit, the 6th green is now back in play and the fairways are in great condition added to that it took our first group just 4 hrs. 5 mins, to play the 3rd round of our Annual Medal Trophy, yes just 4hrs. 5 mins. That’s the big advantage of an early start. It must be said that the “medal” format is not the most favoured by the membership, but once in a while it has to be done. It is obvious that this format is more suited to the lower handicappers and for that reason the competition will undergo a revision before next years’ competition begins. Before I can move on the results for this week’s competition I feel that I must draw your attention to firstly the misfortune and the good fortune within just a few minutes of recently retired school teacher, Derek Sullivan, obviously he has quite accustomed himself to having all of this free time on his hands and as he admits he will be playing a lot of golf from now on. So Derek firstly you have to learn how to pace yourself, taking 17 shots on the par 4 5th and then claiming nearest the pin on the 6th is just a little too erratic ! N.T.P. La Marina Golf Society at Bonalba Our first game of the year was played under blue skies and a warm temperature with shirtsleeves being the order of the day.

The course was in pristine condition, no doubt helped by the rain before xmas.

However, scoring in general did not reflect the quality of the course, but was more of a reflection of the end of the festive season.

Gold winner, with 30 points was Bill Stobo and we understand he also benefitted from a small side bet.

Silver winner was our new Captain Elspeth Craig with an excellent total of 34 points. She also won a nearest the pin prize with the other recipients being Barry Thorogood, Steve Jones and Bill Stobo (again).

El Plantio2 Golf Society by David Swann A total of 23 members, guests and wives took advantage of El Plantio 2's 'Away' Days at La Manga club over the New Year weekend, superbly organised by club vice-captain Lawrence Wanty's wife Theresa.

Very competitive rates were offered for a 3 night's stay at the 5 Star Hotel Principe Felipe, which included 2 rounds of golf on the immaculate yet demanding championship courses with wives taking advantage of the Hotel's facilities.

10 members - some braving seasonal colds - played the South and North courses. Winner on the 1st day was Mel Hope with 28 points and Kenton Wanty triumphed on the final day with a very creditable 34 points. So successful was the experience that suggestions for a similar outing was made for June - watch this space.

Fresh from their triumphs - or disasters - from the weekend on the big courses, some members had to adjust their games from playing 6000 metre courses to

a 1000 metre 9 hole course for Tuesday's Foursome competition. 7 pairings competed playing alternate shots in a 'Medal' format.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Our first game of the year was a Change Partners which was won by the team of John Drakesmith, Terry Field, Annemarie Weisheit and Reg Akehurst with a score of 79 pts.

On Wednesday we played our normal weekly stableford competition where there was one stand out performance with Ulrike Barth coming home with 39 pts to easily win Category Two. The top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Ken Robertson 34 pts 2nd Olga Douglas 31 pts (c/b) 3rd Terry Field 31 pts Cat 2. Ulrike Barth 39 pts 2nd Brian Dent 32 pts 3rd Rod Doel 30 pts We had several guests on the day and the top score was recorded by Julia Samways with a very good 37 pts. A guest also won the contents of the 2's Club with Han scoring the only 2 of the day.

On Friday we played a Waltzer (1-2-3) which was won by the team comprising Geoff Biggerstaff, Rod Doel, Dave Pulling and Pete Dunn.

ORK has got underway on a long awaited four-tier new stand at Segunda Regional Grupo 16 club CD Montesinos at the Municipal Stadium in Los Montesinos, Alicante, as part of a 110,000 euros redevelopment.

Los Montesinos Mayor Jose Manuel Butron announced the news ahead of the New Year, with work commencing in December, which includes wheel chair access throughout the stadium.

"It is good to see that the alterations and improvements of the Municipal Sports facilities within the Municipal Football stadium have begun," said Mayor Jose Manuel Butron.

CD Montesinos, who are currently in third

place of the league table, will also have new changing facilities, to be used by a plethora of teams within the Vega Baja township, from juniors, to the Walking Football team, the 'Monte Mentals'.

"Work has started updating the facilities at the football ground - including a new stand and new changing room facilities," CD Montesinos spokesperson Eddie Cagagio told me.

"A new picnic area, toilet block and a storage room is also within the refurbishment," said Eddie.

A new stand for the supporters has been at the top of the agenda for CD Montesinos, and Eddie said: "Meetings have taken place between club representatives, The Full

CD Montesinos have a fans' base of over 400 supporters - known as 'The Full Monte' Supporters Club - that are the envy of local amateur football within the Vega Baja region.

"The project work has been much needed, and requested, to improve the facilities and it is good to see work has now commenced," said Eddie.

"It is a significant plus that a new four tier stand is being built behind the dug outs at the ground. Everyone at the club are highly delighted that improvements are being made," added Eddie.

Works will also include a new entrance, to and from the Municipal swimming area facilities, linking it to the Municipal Campo.

CD Montesinos host Grupo 15 club Elche Sporting on January 8 in a friendly fixture (KO 4.30pm) ahead of the first league game of 2017 on January 11, away against Grupo Caliche (K0) 9.15pm, to be played at the UD Horadada Athletic ground.

CD Montesinos coach Carlos Perez will see his team host their first home league game of 2017 on January 15 against Benijofar.

SAN MIGUEL GS AT VILLAMARTIN

A perfect day weather-wise and with the course in reasonable condition, although a little damp, a large post New Year turnout of 53 members and 2 guests gathered for a stableford competition. Some difficult pin positions, although somewhat offset by a number of very forward tees, was probably the main reason why scoring was fairly average. A festive season hangover may also have contributed for some. Nick Spicer in Silver Category returned the stand out score of the day of 38 points, followed by Gold winner John Osborne.

The first matches in this year’s SMGS singles matchplay competition took place. Brian Mulligan beat Paul Kelsall 5 & 4, Steve Fleet beat Ray Smithers 3 and 1, and Steve Davis had a tight win over previous competition winner Ken Flaherty, 1 up.

The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Grattan Forber (29), 4th Marg Birtwistle (30), 3rd Chris Hamblett (31), 2nd Norman Padmore (35 on CB), and 1st, El Presidente Phil Birtwistle, also with 35 points.

Our members saw Kevin Harmison coming in 3rd place with his handicap of 0.7 scoring an impressive 37 points receiving 25€ Phil de lacy with his handicap of 15 also scored a great 37 points and claimed second on count-back taking home 35€ and our Tony Smale with his handicap of 12 scored an amazing 38 points collected 50€. EUROGOLF ‘YELLOW PERIL’

On Thursday 5th January in glorious sunshine Eurogolf played a Yellow Peril.

The sunshine and breeze has helped the course recover from the recent flooding and the course has dried out really well.

As it was a long time since we have played a yellow peril a few people were confused with the format and unfortunately the team who thought they had won had to be disqualified. England Women announce squad for La Manga and Pinatar Arena Internationals England Women's head coach Mark Sampson has named an expanded 28-player squad for his side’s two upcoming internationals in Spain.

The Lionesses will travel to Murcia later this month where they will face Norway at the La Manga Club (Sunday 22 January) and Sweden at the Pinatar Arena (Tuesday 24 January).

Notts County striker Rachel Williams returns to the squad for the first time since April 2013. She last played for England in the successful 2013 Cyprus Cup campaign.

Elsewhere, Williams’s Lady Pies team-mates Ellen White and Carly Telford are back following injury while Chelsea duo Millie Bright and Claire Rafferty are also recalled to the squad.

The matches are the first England will play in 2017 as they prepare for this summer’s Euros which take place in Netherlands.

Sampson said: “This camp gives us the chance to kick-off a massively exciting year for us on the right foot.

“Our aim this year is to hit the highest levels we ever have and ultimately to win the Euros, and this camp will give us a strong platform to build our preparation for the summer.

“As we are in pre-season we may be a little off the pace football-wise with no matches or on-pitch training ahead of this camp. However, the players have been aware of these matches for some time so I expect them to be physically and psychologically ready to compete with two excellent teams in Norway and Sweden.

“We have chosen to name an extended squad as we are aware that the players may not be ready for two high-intensity matches in a short space of time at this point of their periodised plan. It also gives us the opportunity to assess more players.

“We have a lot of work to do to be the team we want to become at the Euros and that hard work

Vultures gather as Torry slip to home defeat CD Torrevieja .................... 1 Villarreal ‘C’........................ 2

T

orry got 2017 underway with a home match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium against Villarreal ´C´, no doubt hoping for revenge following the 3-2 defeat handed out in the first away match of the season. Villarreal meanwhile are ccurrently on a poor run having secured only 3 points from the last 15 on offer.

Manager Pedreño has certainly left no stone unturned, in his quest to promote Torry up the div 3 table. It´s become quite obvious to us fans that drastic measures needed to be implemented, if our favourite local side is not to make the dreaded drop into more regional football.

With that in mind, Pedreño has had a clear out.

Out have gone Ruescas, Pecha and Soto (none of whom notched up much game time), but 4 players have arrived to take their place.

Welcome to Central defenders Tato and Jorge, who both join from 3rd div sides (Tato from Buzandada in the Canaries, Jorge from Balearic side Pena). Attacking midfielders Diaby and Ilyes both come in from overseas. Diaby originates from Mali, Africa, and joins from Belgian side Woluwe-Zaventem, whilst Frenchman Ilyes has signed from Roannais Foot.

And more good news in the form of top scorer Pastor, now deciding to stay until the end of the season, and not ply his trade down under, although if the truth be known I understand there

is some difficulty with him acquiring a visa.

Lewis was missing for the 1st of a 4 game suspension, punishment for his sending off in the final match of 2016, a 1-1 draw at Almoradi and also suspended were Jorge and keeper Buba, allowing Lucas to make his first start between the sticks.

But for the leniency of referee Campo Hernandez his debut could have been one of the shortest on record, lasting a little under 3 minutes, when the keeper rushed out of his area to upend Villarreal’s striker Chepe who was clear on goal. Inexplicably Hernandez issued a mere yellow card when a red looked to be the only possible decision he could make. Lucas was a very lucky man indeed.

Fortunately, from the resultant free kick on the edge of the box, Chepe headed wide by a margin.

The visitors certainly had the best of the opening period with Torry still looking like they hadn’t quite shaken off the holiday spirit but it was a half of few chances with the home fans having to wait until midway through the period for ‘the whites’ first opportunity of note. Unfortunately the shot from Matheus lacked any real pace and was easily gathered by Fuoli.

Villarreal winger Andrei almost put the visitors ahead just prior to the interval but his close-range effort was blasted way over the bar. And that’s how it all stayed till the interval with both sides trooping off following a lacklustre first 45.

However, if there was little going on during the first period we had more than enough to keep us on the edge of our seats in the second, which unfortunately began with a goal for the visitors, as Simon opened the scoring from a tight angle with just 2 minutes gone.

But this proved to be the wake up call that the home side needed and as they began to take the game to Villarreal the chances became to fall for Torry.

They were back on level terms in the 66th minute

with debut boy Jorge heading home from a cross

by Luis Carlos, at that stage nothing less than they deserved.

With Lucas making saves at the other end Robles, and Matheus both went close and then we saw the miss, not only of the match but quite probably of the season. On 86 minutes with a wide open goal at his mercy Hugo did the impossible by hitting the post. In an empty area the ball then fell kindly to Robles, a yard off the line and completely unmarked, but rather bizarrely he too was unable to convert, although the players were absolutely convinced that the ball crossed the line.

With play waved on by the referee Villarreal then broke upfield for Lucas to pull off another great save from Akale.

But there was even more drama still to come, Hugo adjudged to be offside when his shot found the back of the visitors net only for Villarreal to break straight from the free kick. With work to do

sub Akale picked the ball up on the half way line, before dribbling it into the goal area and slotting home to give the visitors an unlikely 2nd goal.

This was a game that only moments earlier Torry looked to have in the bag. Quite how it all came to nothing will be a subject for discussion long into the week.

Unfortunately disturbing scenes after the final whistle saw the involvement of the Guardia Civil as red cards were issued to Carrasco and Chepe with a multitude of yellows to the Villarreal bench.

So, whilst the victory keeps Villarreal in the thick of the promotion hunt the Torrevejense will be dismayed to see that a number of their rivals picked up all three points as they, once again, failed to add to their tally, so as they make the short journey to Orihuela next weekend the quest for points against their mid table opponents takes on an ever more important significance.

Daya win a hard fought thriller Daya Nueva 3 - 1 C.F. Atletic Santa Pola Daya created a great chance in the opening moments when a fierce shot produced a good save from the visitors' keeper.

The opening exchanges were pretty even but Daya probably carried the greater threat. On ten minutes Santa Pola took a good free kick that had Jaime in the Daya goal back peddling furiously to take a good high catch.

Moments later a well worked Daya free kick saw the visitors' keeper make another very good save.

On fifteen minutes a slip in Daya's defence allowed Santa Pola to fire in a good effort that fortunately went straight to Jaime in goal. It was end to end football played at pace and at this stage you would be pushed to predict the outcome of the game, although the visitors' keeper was by far the busier. On twenty six minutes Daya took the lead when a beautiful ball out of defence found Franky unmarked on the right, he powered forward into the visitors' penalty area and unleashed an unstoppable shot for 1-0 Daya.

Jaime was called into action on thirty two minutes making a good one handed tip over from a free kick by Santa Pola. Daya took their 1-0 lead into the break. The first half had been fast and furious and highly entertaining but one goal was not going to be enough to win this game !

From the restart the visitors almost equalised as Jaime fumbled and dropped a high ball. In the scramble that followed Daya were awarded a free kick and the threat was over. Santa Pola were now playing long balls over the top causing Daya a few problems. From one of these long balls on forty eight minutes the visitors won a penalty which was duly despatched to level the scores.

So now it was game on and you would be hard pressed to name the winner.

Daya had a great penalty shout turned down and shortly after had a good effort well saved by the visitors' keeper. From a Daya throw in on seventy five minutes Ivan hit an unstoppable shot to,give the lead back to Daya. Minutes later the home side were down to ten men following a very heavy tackle. Daya were now having to defend stoutly as Santa Pola threw the kitchen sink at them.

Daya's third goal came from a quick break on eighty seven minutes when the ball was fired across the box and turned in by Braulio. So 3-1 final score but the game had been much, much closer than the scoreline suggests.

Credit to both coaches for sending out their players to perform as they did. It was end to end from start to finish and a fantastic game to watch for supporters of both sides. Daya Dave Team Sponsor : Segurlab
