Can Gunners Fend Off Man City?

The Premier League title battle is shaping up to be a two-horse race between Arteta’s Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. To add extra spice to the battle, Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad Stadium for three years.

Guardiola was undoubtedly a great tutor to Arteta, but the Arsenal boss is looking to get one over on his former mentor. The City manager has won four Premier League titles during his time in Manchester, with two of those coming while Arteta was his assistant.

Arteta’s Glittering Career in England

Barcelona gave Arteta his senior debut back in 1999, as the San Sebastian-born man was given a chance in the C team. He was promoted to Barcelona B before moving to Britain in 2004 to sign for Rangers in Scotland.

After a brief spell back in Spain with Real Sociedad, Arteta was subsequently loaned to Everton before signing on a permanent deal at Goodison Park in 2005. Arteta was popular in Merseyside but the move to Arsenal in 2011 was the biggest of his career. The Spaniard spent 11 years in the Premier League, racking up almost 300 Premier League appearances for Everton and Arsenal combined.

Carp-R-Us report

The second round of the Carp-R-Us Spring Series was fished at the El Bosquet complex.Pegs 17-25 were used for the first time in several weeks and it was hoped that the warmer weather would have stimulated the fish in this section into feeding, and so it proved with four of the top five weights coming from this stretch.

For the second week running the winner of the match was Roy Dainty who had 13.30kg on pole and bread from the much fancied peg 27.Second was the ever consistent Dave Hutchinson with 11.38kg from peg 17.Dave caught on both maggot and bread.Third, ably coached by his pet dog, was Doug Hornblow with 10.80kg caught on pole and maggot from peg 24 and fourth with 8.52kg from peg 20 was Tony Flett who used pole and bread.

After missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification on the final day of the 2021-22 campaign, Arteta’s time at the Emirates was at a crossroads. However, the London club has used that disappointment to kick on and have their best season since the glory days of Arsene Wenger.

They made an excellent start to their campaign and have not looked back. The London clubhas had a few disappointments along the way, but Arsenal has been incredibly consistent and has remained top of the table despite a serious challenge from current champions Man City.

Of course, there will no doubt be plenty of ups and downs along the way, with the battle likely to go to the wire, but Arsenal has given itself a terrific chance of getting its hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time since the 2003-04 “Invincibles” campaign.

Bottoms up for Balaton Crew

With the start of the SAMM race season looming, members of the Balaton boat share group worked hard to get their three 6 meter Sailfish 18 boats race ready. The project was led by group chairman Julian, helped by various members, Bob, Jurgen, Paddy, David, Jez, Willie and Rona, over the course of a week.

Starting with Sirocco, they sailed her to Los Urutias marina to be worked on. First task being to lift her from the water and remove the weed and barnacle growth from the bottom of the hull. This is excessive in the Mar Menor, probably due to the higher water temperature, and greatly reduces the hulls efficiency and boat speed. The easiest way to remove it is by a hot water jet wash as soon as the boat is lifted before the encrustations dry out then, after being allowed to dry, a quick rub down and a fresh coat of anti-foul paint can be applied. The upper hull and deck were then lightly sanded and repainted with epoxy marine paint and new decals applied. Finally a check was made off all the rigging and ropes before she was returned to the water.

QUIZ FROM PAGE 14: and Arteta remain the best of friends

Whatever happens from now until the end of the season, Arteta has got Arsenal playing the right way again and has brought back the feelgood factor that was missing for so many years. Still, getting the better of Guardiola and guiding Arsenal to the Premier League title will be Arteta’s greatest achievement in football.

She was followed by similar work on both Vision before the first race day and Ginetta soon afterwards. They should now all sail well and give the smaller dinghies a run for their money.
