ElEPhonE boxes are few and far between in Visitorland these days, and those that survive are more likely to contain a stack of second-hand books, a community notice board or a defibrillator than a coin-operated phone. So I thought it was high time I got myself a mobile phone, just in case the car breaks down miles from home or I break down when walking the country footpaths alone. But when I encountered the multitude of contracts offered by the various phone companies and the bewildering choice of handsets priced from nothing at all to a three-figure sum, I wished the thought had never crossed my mind.

I was shown mobiles which would enable me to take photographs, play FM radio, connect to the internet and send text messages and e.mails. I could sign up to tariffs that would give me countless free minutes of calls every month, allow me to send numerous free text messages, guarantee me a free upgrade when the phone becomes obsolete and, I seem to recall, insure me against dropping it down the lavatory. I was told all about coverage, deadspots, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, about megabytes of memory and megapixels of display, about where and how to download an enormous range of ring tones, and about how I could synchronise the phone with my iPad, iPod and computer. The latest generation of mobile phones give me, said the salesman, ‘untethered access to information and applications’. I was bemused.

Do you, I asked, sell a mobile on which I can simply make and receive phone calls, that doesn’t demand that I wear my reading glasses every time I want to use it, that has keys large enough to accommodate my podgy fingers, that is cheap to buy and use. The answer, of course, was ‘no’. nowadays modern gadgetry comes equipped with all imaginable bells and whistles, which my dictionary defines as ‘speciously attractive but superfluous facilities’. The adverts, leaflets and sales

spiel are designed to convince us not only that we want all these facilities but that we actually need them because they will improve life in some undefined way.

Whether we want them or not they all have to be paid for, either through the price of the phone and the call charges or through the contracted monthly direct debit.

When I see people walking or driving down the road with a phone pressed to their ear, or chattering endlessly into their infernal machines in pubs, restaurants, shops, trains and buses, I wonder how much is just time-filling chitter-chatter, talk for the sake of talk, talk for fear of silence. All I want and genuinely need is a mobile phone to use if I really need to talk, but sadly the manufacturers’ marketing men view the concept of ‘the right tool for the job’ as hopelessly old-fashioned in this electronic age.

Sir, having recently re-located to Cornwall, I was delighted to discover that Spectra Musica from Wincanton were performing as part of The Callington Festival on 6th July. not wishing to miss this opportunity to wave the Wincanton flag, we duly turned out to meet a few familiar faces, but above all, to listen to this superb choir, and their guest soloists, perform a complete range of music ranging from Palestrina to Lloyd-Webber, as conducted by the very professional S. K. Twiselton.

If any readers have the opportunity to attend any of their future events, be assured you will not be disappointed.

(I believe their next outing is going to be in September at Cheap Street Church Sherborne.)

SSDC - The draft local plan

Sir, I thought I would write to you with my thoughts on how the inspectors rejection of the local plan affects our area. The inspectors summing up the Councils draft local plan stated: ‘Whilst I am not ruling out the suspension option, I would need the Council to put a compelling case to me to be persuaded that a suspension is the right way forward. Under the circumstances the Council should therefore also consider the option of withdrawing the plan.’

This is a damming inditement of the submission made by the liberal Democrat ruling group, the Conservative opposition told them this would be the outcome many times, I would estimate this stubbornness and arrogance has cost the South Somerset

ratepayers in excess of £250,000.

The inspector is clearly stating that South Somerset's local Plan is so bad they should consider totally scrapping it and starting it again. At a full council meeting in the Spring I made all these points to the liberal democrats and said: ‘We are trying to help you, when the inspector says your local plan, which you have refused to change is declared unsound don't say we didn't tell you.’ And now that is exactly what has happened.

With regard to our local market towns employment land the inspector said the following: ‘Additional employment land requirement to be identified in Allocations DPD’.

This is exactly what we have been saying, the council put on paper that we should have additional hectares of employment land (varying from Wincanton, Castle Cary and Bruton)but in reality had allocated none and if they were serious about bringing more employment to the town they would need to identify and bring forward specific parcels of land to attract the new employment needed.

Inspector hoggar also appreciated that Wincanton has had most of our housing requirement delivered in the early part of the plan and that the town must be given time to allow the new housing to be absorbed.

South Somerset District Council will now have a major job on their hands correcting all their mistakes, unfortunately at great cost to South Somerset ratepayers. nick Colbert nccolbert@aol.com 01749 812986

Sir, The pathetic and sad author of the article concerning the spelling of the word honorary should engage brain and get their facts right before wrongly accusing and tarnishing Trevor's good name. Its angered and upset a lot of club members who find it disgraceful, disgusting and

abhorrent that this minor incident was made public. Its touched on a very sensitive issue that the Plaque is in the memory of Malcolm Green a well respected club treasurer. Anthea Green stated the words mean more than a minor spelling mistake or is it a mistake?

According to o.E.D. it states during the 18th. & 19th. century the word honorary with a U was an alternative spelling and having spoke to the Manufacturers of the plaque it can be spelt either way.

If there was a problem why did you not contact a committee member or better still myself, Garry newton, who authorised and passed the artwork.

Since Trevor came to live in our village he has become a very valuable asset, totally committed

to the cause of helping the village community, hence I think he deserves a public apology from the author, so stand up and be counted.

Dispatches Government commitment to improving transport infrastructure could be good news for A303

The commitment to improving Britain’s transport infrastructure, announced in the Spending Review, has been welcomed by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce as a positive step towards improving the A303 and an opportunity to boost economic development within the county.

The Chancellor announced £50billion of capital investment in 2015, with £300billion capital spending guaranteed to the end of the decade. This will include the largest programme of investment in our roads for half a century.

In partnership with Somerset County Council, the Somerset Chamber has lobbied for improvements to the A303 for some time, and will continue to do so in light of the government’s pledge to improve the UK’s road networks.

Although local government budgets were hit hard as part of the Chancellor’s £11.5billion spending cuts, improvements to the A303 would be funded by central government. Any enhancements to the route will bring investment for the area, creating jobs and improving access to london and the South East for Somerset businesses, as well as increasing the attractiveness of the county from an inward investment point of view.

Somerset Chamber CEo, Rupert Cox, says, ‘The Somerset Chamber is supportive of the Chancellor’s wish to invest in transport infrastructure and calls on him to instruct the Department of Transport to prioritise the long overdue enhancements to the A303 so that it becomes a dual carriageway for its entire length.

This investment will not only create jobs during the construction period, but make the south west of England more competitive with the creation of long term employment due to increased investment from new investors into the county.’

Bruton Girls Win French Pop Video Finals

A team of four French GCSE students from Bruton School for Girls won the Routes into languages South West Pop Video Competition in their age category.

The girls, Georgie lewis (score, piano and violin), harriet Sheves (voice) and olivia Bishop (video and montage), and head of Modern languages Mrs Xaviere harvey, attended the award

ceremony, which was held at the University of Exeter in June.

This was the culmination of a superb team effort from the girls, who started work on this project back in February when Mrs harvey challenged them to produce a pop video in their French lessons and lucía García del Arco, at Bruton School for Girls on a short-stay visit, came up with the lyrics.

The girls were the youngest participants in their age group (1518 years old) and faced fierce competition as the standard of all participants was high.

Mrs harvey said, ‘This success is due credit to the talent and endeavour of the girls. It was a big ask to expect them to produce something that was so far removed from everyday lessons, and they did it with enthusiasm, demonstrating creativity both in their flair for the language and in their musical composition.

I am absolutely thrilled that they won this competition and hope that this will help to further enhance the standard of and enthusiasm for Modern languages

here at Bruton School for Girls,’ she added.

Bruton School for Girls are always seeking new ways of crossreferencing the curriculum, of which this is an example. Whilst the team was in Exeter receiving their prize, the Spanish class were heading to lanzarote on a Geography fieldtrip in which they will also be utilising their language skills with a real sense of purpose.

Bruton girls are always up for a challenge and a bit of fun, and the school believes that the humanities and the Arts are excellent avenues for language practice.

A fellow participant at the competition in the Public Speaking section, Tom Daley, explained via Skype on the day, the relevance of learning Modern languages and how they have helped him in his diving career so far. These girls are sure to follow his advice!

Showtime at Carybrook

Residents at Carybrook residential home in Castle Cary recently enjoyed a delightful afternoon show by the pupils of the l. E. Ray School of Dance. Dance teacher ‘Miss louise’ and her pupils aged from 4 to 16 prepared and performed a medley of dances, demonstrating their skills in ballet, tap and modern dance.

The afternoon was an immense success and appeared to bring back many happy memories for Carybrook residents who suffer from various dementias. The delight in the faces of the residents was obvious to see and the show a great focus for discussion.

‘Miss louise’ said that the girls were very excited at the prospect of performing for older members of the community and she herself was enthusiastic about organising a performance for residents with dementia as she has personal family experience of the condition and the distress it can cause.

Staff at Carybrook were delighted that the children were able to come and perform and are hoping that they will return later in the year for another performance.

‘Residents often have little contact with children and are always delighted to have them visit. having such talented children visit was an additional bonus.

Any community involvement and volunteers that can enhance the lives of residents with dementia at Carybrook are always very warmly welcomed.’

Q1. My company provides website hosting for businesses based in the UK and in other countries. For VAT purposes is this treated as a sale of goods or services?

Robert Stone replies:

There is an easy rule of thumb to decide whether something is goods or services for VAT purposes: can you pick it up and hold it? Yes: goods, no: services.

Website hosting can't be physically picked-up therefore it's a service. There are some complex VAT rules for selling services across international borders. You need to know whether your customer is in business or not.

Broadly if the customer in another country is a business you do not charge VAT. We need to talk through the detail of what you declare on your invoice and what evidence to collect from your customer.

Q2. I run my own consulting company in the UK, which pays my Brazilian wife a small wage for answering the phone and preparing marketing materials. Can the company pay for her to complete an advanced English course at the local college?

Robert Stone replies:

Training for any employee can be charged through the company if it is relevant to the employee's duties or future duties. An ability to speak and write correct English is necessary for your business so the proposed English course is work-related training for your employee. Your company can pay for the course, and receive a tax deduction for that cost. There will be no benefit in kind charge for your wife. The company can also pay for travel to the course. You should list the duties your wife performs for the company, and both sign the document as part of her employment terms with the company. This description of her duties will justify the training cost, should the Taxman ever ask.

shAFtEsBURy – business focus Allum & Sidaway celebrate a double triumph in UK Jewellery Awards

As one of the South West’s most prestigious jewellers, Allum & Sidaway were delighted to be finalists in three categories of the 2013 UK Jewellery Awards, sponsored by leading industry magazine Retail Jeweller.

So when the Industry’s finest gathered in the extraordinary surroundings of the natural history Museum, london on 4th July to see which 16 lucky winners from the Best of the Best would take home an elite trophy, Allum & Sidaway could only hope that they might win one of the three categories. To be triumphant in two Awards was a victory for Allum and Sidaway and staff as they celebrated their extraordinary achievement.

The first award was for Retail Employer of the Year when one of the judges said ‘I want to work here. Just fantastic’! however, a second triumph was waiting for Abigail Stradling, the Salisbury manager, winner

MOTOR VINTAGE Motor Cycling MoToRCYClInG IS and has always been a very social pastime which is perhaps strange when you mostly ride solo. Whether you take part in some form of two wheeled sport or just riding on the road then the social interaction becomes an important part of these proceedings. I have recently been to a couple of bike meets where motorcyclists meet purely for the sociality.

Some meets are properly organised affairs and some entirely informal gatherings, built up over the years to become well established. locally an example of an organised meet is the one that takes place at Poole Quay every Tuesday evening during the summer months. Sometimes up to three and a half thousand motorcycles can assemble there on a sunny summer evening. A small

charge is made to attendees which is then given to support local charities. A concours judge selects the best bikes in various classes and at the end of the summer all winners go forward for judging for the champion of the year. All participants just go there to talk to other enthusiasts for an entertaining evening. Some riders travel from as far afield as Cornwall, Birmingham and london.

Informal meets have grown up at places such as West Bay, Wincanton and the Southern Counties Shooting Centre at Warden hill. The later takes place on Wednesday evenings and is now being held at the George Albert hotel rather than the Cabin Café.

All these events give an aspect to motorcycling which is easy and carefree where friendships and camaraderie abound. Machines can take part whether new or old. Give it a try and see if this is an activity which suits you. My picture this month was taken at West Bay and shows a Triumph and a Vincent (both machines being immaculate) being admired by onlookers.

I have recently noticed several superbly built specials at various events. Most people bought a new machine and immediately made subtle changes to suit themselves.

It might be something quite small and insignificant or major alterations, either way few new machines remained absolutely standard for long. These changes become part of the history of the machine and can add to the charm or individuality of that particular bike. It therefore becomes difficult for later owners to restore the machine to concourse condition, which in theory is the condition it was in when it left the factory new.

If the modifications are done sensibly and add to the usability of the machine then I like to see them retained in the restoration. More major alterations might include changing the engine for that of another manufacturer. Many have been made over the years and become accepted and well known, such as Triton, Tribsa, and norvin. others are less common such as Velton, Mabsa, Trigreeves and as many more as your imagination can dream up. Proper manufactured amalgamations have also been made and look supreme.

Rickman Metisse, Egli, Cheney and Seeley to name a few. Providing these machines are properly engineered and assembled they do make very desirable machines

which are a pleasure to own and ride. When buying a bike most people will be looking for the totally original machine, whatever its condition, but spare a thought for the ‘Specials’ they may be a lot more interesting than you think and certainly different from the usual run of the mill stuff.

August has another plethora of events all designed to provide enjoyment for the classic motorcyclist. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section has a guest speaker at its club night on the 12th and they will have a stand at the Popham Show on the 18th. The Somerset Section has for its club night a ‘bring an interesting object’ on the 1st (always a fascinating evening). They have their Sign Post Rally on the 11th starting at Creech St Michael, and on the 15th they have an evening meet at Blagdon. The Dorset Section has its Pre 73 Border Run from Gillingham on the 4th, an Autojumble and Barbecue for its club night on the 14th, the Jeff Clew Memorial Run from the haynes Museum at Sparkford on the 18th and a Mid Week Run on the 21st. Dorset also has its usual lunch meet at West Stour on the 7th and the Breakfast Meet at the same venue on the 31st. Can I recommend to you the Jeff Clew Memorial Run on the 18th. Jeff wrote for this magazine for some

years and his contributions were well received. This event attracts about a hundred entrants and with two routes available the run is able to cater for machines of all ages (some will be in excess of 100 years old).

Another event not to be missed is the historic Vehicle Rally held at the Sherborne School Courts organised by the Rotary Clubs of Sherborne. held this year on the 25th August an optional road run will start at 11am and by 2pm hundreds of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles will have assembled. The setting for this event is superb, the crowds are entertained by the Sherborne Town Band, and a jolly good tea is provided to all entrants. A wonderful day out and all monies raised will go to local charities. For further details on any of the above events ring 01935-872528. having finished this article I am now off to the shed where I know I have a spare Royal Enfield frame and a JAP engine, a Sunbeam gearbox and some norton wheels and a Velocette tank. This new creation could be called a Roejap or perhaps a Japfield. I might even paint it red all over with black spots so I can call it The Ladybird, or maybe I could paint it bright yellow and call it the Flying Banana. The possibilities are endless.

The billion pound industry preying on our insecurities aside, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make the best of what we have. In fact sparkly eyes and glowing skin can be a sign of a healthy body. Well beauty comes from within (in more ways than one!) so in this article I want to focus on some of the ‘nutricosmetics’ I think are the best, the ones to look out for in a good skin supplement.

Pycnogenol – An extract from French maritime pine bark.

Pycnogenol is a potent antioxidant with a broad spectrum of therapeutic uses. Eye health, veinous support, allergies and high blood pressure have all reportedly benefited from the use of this supplement. Used in supplements as a skin protective agent and to support the important collagen matrix, some sources say it may also be helpful for pigmentation disorders and psoriasis.

MSM – Methyl sulphonyl methane, a sulphur containing compound with a special affinity for the connective tissues, skin, hair and nails. WINCANTON surprise that after 36 years of use some maintenance was necessary. The much-needed Wincanton bypass opened in March 1977, at long last taking the constant flow of A303 traffic out of the town centre. Eleven years earlier, in March 1966, trains were taken away from the town with the controversial closure of the Somerset & Dorset line between Bath and Bournemouth. Wincanton was effectively removed from the map of long-distance road and rail traffic flows and reverted to being a quiet market town.

In its earliest days the town was probably no more than a collection of houses at the bottom of the valley of the River Cale, where routes to Bristol, Exeter and the south coast converged. Here, too, were the mill and the church.

The shop on the corner of Carrington Way was originally a two-storey building but the third storey was added as long ago as 1837.

Wincanton’s priceless assets, the recreation ground alongside the River Cale. This large expanse of flat wellmaintained grassland is ideal for ball games, be they informal kick-arounds or organised cricket matches, and a footpath along the wooded east bank of the river leads to a children's play area.

The main path follows the

course of the river beyond the recreation ground all the way to Southgate Road, opposite the lidl supermarket and at that end of the path are the skateboard ramps so popular with teenagers.

wetland garden and summer garden. The children’s play area will be transformed into a play garden and a new bridge across the river will link it to the cricket field. A network of footpaths is proposed with additional entrances to the park from Pines Close and from the business park at lawrence Hill, and extensive planting of native trees and shrubs and an avenue of ornamental trees will help to enhance the rural atmosphere. The entire project is likely to cost around half a million pounds, but sufficient has already been raised to make a start shortly on the play garden and the new river bridge.

For indoor activities such as short-mat bowling, archery and amateur dramatics, Wincanton Memorial Hall takes a lot of beating. Opened in January 1960, it was built as a memorial to local residents who had fought, and in some cases died, in the Second World War. It contains a large hall with a sprung dance floor and a stage with excellent lighting, a lounge bar, well-equipped kitchen and some smaller rooms. And it now has a smart glazed entrance porch and new noticeboard.

Thanks to Wincanton Royal British legion the town also has a war memorial, completed in 2007, that stands proudly in the grounds of the Memorial Hall. The hall is available for hire for events and private functions – for details phone 01963 33397.

Parking is free and easy.

The Memorial Hall car park has been extended behind the shops on the south side of the High Street with a pedestrian exit emerging opposite the precinct to the Co-op supermarket. The brick arches fronting the precinct and the adjacent Papertrees stationer and newsagent are all that remain of what was for many years Ireson Garage.

Most of the garage, established in 1917, was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the supermarket and small shopping precinct. The shop at no.25 was demolished at much the same time to give access to the supermarket site and land that was about to provide sites for a health centre, library and police station. The new road through the site is called Carrington Way as a reminder of Ebenezer Carrington who lived and traded at 23 High Street for 40 years. His shop

Cycle-Babble IT IS BASTIllE DAY in France as I sit and type these words.

Cycling fans around the world are glued to their screens watching one of the most anticipated stages of this year's Tour de France unfold in front of them as 189 riders hit the slopes of the fabled Mont Ventoux, otherwise known as the Giant of Provence.

It is a devil of a climb. A true monster. Twenty one kilometres of constant climbing take you from the town of Bedoin to the top of the mountain, perched 1,912m above sea-level. The road climbs mercilessly through precipitous wooded slopes before turfing you out into the full glare of the Provençal sun. A left-hand bend at the famous auberge Chalet Reynard, leaves you with 6km still to go through a barren, white-rocked landscape. Here nothing grows but your suffering.

The heat radiates off the boulders and the wind saps the spirit – if there's one thing that is harder than riding up a mountain, it's riding up a mountain with a strong wind in your face. And, unsurprisingly given its name, the Ventoux can get a tad breezy - winds approaching 200mph have been recorded here. It is a legendary mountain that has been visited 14 times by the race before today's stage, with some of the sport's greatest names having scaled its might at the head of the race. So: the Ventoux, on Bastille Day, during the 100th edition of the Tour de France. A day then for France's riders to come to the fore. Hundreds of thousands of fans are lining the route to the top of the mountain and they want to see a home rider claim France's first win of this year's race. Bastille Day always brings the French riders out from the pack. For the 99% of riders for whom an overall Tour win will always be an impossible dream, a stage win will be the pinnacle of their career. For a Frenchman to win today of all days adds icing to an already luxurious cake. A Tour win on Bastille Day will bring him sporting immortality in his country. It doesn't happen that often, just five times in the last 20 years. The last being

David Moncoutie in 2005.

On that day Moncoutie escaped on the final climb of the day, with over 30km still to ride to the finish in Digne-les-Bains.

In broiling heat and with so far still to go, he surprised his fellow breakaway companions by opting to go alone. It was a move based on instinct, one made with the heart not the head. It should have failed. His lead never breached more than 30 seconds.

He should have been reeled in before the sprint for the line. But he wasn't. Buoyed by the crowds that lined the streets and roared him on he completed a famous win. It was a terrific solo victory, one that was crafted not engineered. That is how the French like their riders.

Craftsmen not engineers. For them the only thing that tops a French stage winner on Bastille Day is a win that comes with a dash of panache. And that is what they are hoping for right now on the slopes of the Ventoux. Which Frenchman will rise to the top of the bunch today. Which Frenchman can today follow in the tyre tracks of David Moncoutie?

REACTION TO THE NEWS last month about bully boys Anheuser-Busch has been unanimous; all condemned their idiocy in attacking the tiny microbrewer Belleville of Wandsworth.

Indeed, one correspondent decreed that ‘A-B think that all their customers are idiots, for it would only be an idiot who confused Belleville with Belle Vue; two very different styles, let alone different names!’ I must say I do agree, so to all drinkers of Bud and similar, the message is clear; we the brewers have no

respect for you, our customers, who make us untold billions each year!

On a different note altogether, by some work of the hand of fate, I surfed in on ‘Bloomberg TV’ whilst looking for a particular unrelated item on the news. This is a channel which deals with business/stock market news, and by co-incidence, in the studio was none other than the founder of Sam Adams Brewery, Jim Koch, complete with a pint of beer in his hand from which he took the occasional sip. Talk about promoting your own products, and by the eloquent way he spoke, it was obvious that it is not just a business to him but is something he truly believes in.

His criticism of the ‘Big Boys of Brewing’ in the states was tactful if thinly veiled ‘they have their place, but we were looking for a niche market for those looking for something a little different’ (or words to that effect). The brewing for what was to become ‘Sam Adams’ started in 1984 and now has about 1% of the market in the U.S.A, so again even their share is not going to get those in charge of A-B and Company losing any sleep. I have to admit to trying their products on the odd occasion, I was even lucky enough to pick up a couple of

appropriate glasses from a charity shop in Sturminster Newton (coincidentally along with a couple of Belle Vue ones!) Their Boston Lager is worth a try – yes, a lager, after all they use good quality ingredients, and even take their employees on a trip to Bavaria once a year to choose the hops. Certainly getting the workers involved to this degree in my opinion helps to retain them, increases their interest and commitment and stimulates that certain esprit de corps so sadly lacking in so many businesses today. I wonder if AnheuserBusch has a great deal of worker

My dislike of Champagne is a topic that arises now and again, and Sam Adams produced a special beer specifically for those of us who would rather toast the New Year with a beer than the French stuff. Named ‘Infinium’ it had a strength of 10.3% and cost $20 per 750ml bottle. ‘The first beer produced under the Reinheitsgebot (the Bavarian pure beer act of 1516) for over 100 years’ - they claimed. All I am thinking is; it’s a shame we couldn’t get hold of some!

The article in question is headed ‘We need to put pubs not festivals first’ which Sue qualifies in a very reasonable way. As she rightly says; festivals are mainly for the converted, and at the same time may well take trade away from pubs, even though there may be many pubs that do some extra trade in the particular festival area as the

punters travel to the event. How many pubs, she asks, would be most grateful for just a fraction of the customers seen at many beer festivals? The last two we attempted to visit were sold out, and to be honest I wasn’t completely unhappy about this as I know I would be tempted to try rather too many beers - with the subsequent effects. Selling all the tickets must be good for the organisers so I can make a guess just how many would be attending. With so many pubs still closing their doors for the last time every week – 28 at the last count, to get people into pubs should be the priority, and quite frankly I don’t care if they drink real ale or not – get ‘em in first!

The Great British Beer Festival may well be a great show-case for the wonderful products available to us enthusiasts, but perhaps mini festivals held in pubs would be much better for all concerned. I include the brewers/pubcos in this as well, for it is them that need to have more flexibility. Too many tenanted landlords are practically held to ransom by their Lords and Masters, even to the point of refusing certain ales from within their own portfolio. Would it really hurt a brewer for a pub to even take a pick from their local micro brewery every now and

again? I don’t think it would. As Sue Hart rightly points out, there are sometimes difficulties getting enough staff to man a festival, and there has even been a noticeable drop in the number of attendees. However, whilst a mini festival would not be putting money in the bank for CAMRA, at least there are people getting into pubs which is what CAMRA is all about isn’t it? Well; isn’t it…?

Wine & Dine at their cheapest and most plentiful. Most summer fruits are suitable for using in a Rum-Pot but you must always make sure they are perfect fruits, no imperfections or bruises. Use granulated sugar and dark rum.

After each addition of fruit, sugar and rum cover the pot opening with cling film to make it airtight and replace the lid.

Do not stir your pot and keep it somewhere dark between each addition.

After you’ve added the last lot of fruit, around November time, leave the pot to stand for a couple of weeks before tasting … it will keep indefinitely and is a special treat for Christmas. The fruit is delicious served warm over vanilla ice-cream, or in a trifle (for adults only of course). The liquid is a superb liqueur.

Student Beckii Goffe looked on anxiously as judges tasted her competition dish of Crispy Skinned Mackerel during the Lyme Regis Mackerel Festival.

Student’s Fish Dish wins Top Chef’s Competition

Professional Cookery student Beckii Goffe has won the final of a competition run by top chef Mark Hix. The contest was part of Lyme Regis’ Mackerel Festival and supported by Mr Hix, chef, award winning food writer and owner of the Hix Oyster and Fish House in the town. Beckii (16) of Sherborne was one of just three finalists who made it to the cook off on Friday 12th July 2013 on Lyme Regis seafront.

Beckii created a recipe for crispy skinned mackerel served with radish, beetroot and cucumber salad with foraged seaweed salsa. It was one of three personally selected for the final by Mr Hix, who chose the winner with Simon Bennett of

the Watch House, Tony Colston of By the Bay and Lin Pidsley, Head Chef at Hix Oyster & Fish House.

They chose the best recipe based on taste, presentation and creativity.

Mr Hix said ‘All three contestants produced great flavoured and well thought out dishes. Competitions are always tricky to judge, but Beckii's dish just had the edge, not on flavour, but the ease of execution in a restaurant scenario and the simplicity.’

WHAT A CONTRAST to last summer! As I write the days are hot, the sky is blue with a few greyish bits but no rain for a while now. Forecast is still fair but a bit of rain on the horizon which will be more than welcome as the grass is looking terribly brown, and the garden in general is lacking in moisture. So what happens next? The ideal would be a couple of days steady rain – not too heavy but gentle steady rain, preferably fairly small raindrops that soak into the ground rather than an enormous deluge which runs straight off into the water course! I am not asking for much, but it does seem to be all or nothing over the past

couple of years. We’ve had really cold, really wet and now really hot weather. Extremes. That was mentioned by the meteorologists earlier this year when they gave their predictions regarding the effects of global warming; we would be subject to more extremes of weather. How do we manage this situation? The key is thinking ahead. Far too often we wait until things happen before we take action. As a garden centre we sell more water butts during a drought than we do when it’s wet! Pre-planning for extremes is challenging but not that complicated. Depending on what you want to protect, looking after the soil is important and the more organic matter you can

add to it, then the better it will do. You really don’t have to worry about digging it in, just spread it on top and the worms will do that for you! You can do this anytime and it will always be worthwhile, but if the soil is dry it would be a good idea to water first then add the mulch. [Mulch is defined as a layer of material applied to the surface and is usually but not exclusively organic. It could be gravel as easily as it is bark or well-rotted compost].

So far no hose bans, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t happen somewhere in the country. If it does then gardeners need to decide where precious water should be used. I would use it on pots, tubs and productive vegetable crops. Annual plants will never have the welldeveloped roots systems of perennial plants, and will dry out more quickly. Big plants in small tubs are another cause for concern, but they can be moved into the shade to reduce the

amount of water they lose.

When is the best time to water?

Early in the morning when everything has cooled down overnight is the best time. Failing that, in the evening when the heat of the day has passed.

Watering in the middle of the day when everything is warm means that a large percentage of the water you use will evaporate straight away and be wasted. If you’re on a meter then you will feel that when the water bill comes in! If it is mid-day and your favourite plant is looking poorly by all means give it some water then chuck a bit of netting or cloth over it to shade it. Water droplets on green leaves act like magnifying glass lenses and cause scorch marks when the sunlight hits them.

Pest and disease problems change with the weather; wet conditions encourage slugs, grey mould, potato and tomato blight, black spot and downy mildews.

GARDENING aphids, insect pests in general, powdery mildews and rust. Good air circulation helps reduce fungal problems, and if the plant is not under stress from lack of food and water, then it will have a better chance of survival.

Plant of the Month

So much to choose from – some just going over, some just coming in.

Phlox paniculata; the perennial border phlox is a long established group of garden plants. There are a number of other species, several of which are best grown in the rock garden.

A quite superb fully hardy herbaceous perennial, with sweetly fragrant panicles of pink, white and purple/blue flowers, which appear from mid-summer, sometimes earlier through to late autumn. It is the ideal herbaceous or mixed border plant and can be used informally in a cottage garden. It is also good for

cutting and flower arranging.

Phlox can be used to attract wild life such as bees and insects into the garden.

Phlox ‘Nora Leigh' has a variegated leave form and is well worth growing in the border.

Phlox likes a well prepared soil that has been enriched with rotted compost or manure and is moisture retentive but does drain.

Full sun is best but it can tolerate partial shade and is fully hardy.

All the cultivars have an upright habit so may need support in the shape of a stake or birch twigs. Phlox paniculata will require staking when planted in borders alongside other herbaceous perennials.

Dead heading will prolong the flowering period. In late autumn cut the stems right down to the base and mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost in early spring.

There is also an annual Phlox called P. Drummondii of which there are several really worthwhile varieties, tall for mid or back of the border as well as lower growing sorts for the front.

The ornamental garden [i.e. the bit you face when sitting in the deck chair] should see a burst of activity with deadheading, cutting back and all that – see above. You can always add pot grown plants even in the height of summer to take care of the odd gap.

Courgettes are particularly prone to mildew – that’s the white powdery coating on the older leaves. You can help a young plant by removing diseased leaves but older plants will probably collapse. Roses are often badly affected

by Black Spot and Downy Mildew – look for irregular purple-brown marks in the middle of the leaf. If you are spraying, use Rose Clear or Fungus Clear every 2 or 3 weeks but if you are not spraying, clear away the debris and in both cases give a light pruning, feed and mulch.

Summer pruning of top fruit – especially trained trees, is very important to create good fruiting wood, and it also takes out soft growth prone to insect damage.

Cutback side shoots to about 5 leaves. Spray cherries, peaches and plums – after picking – with a copper fungicide to limit the

damage caused by bacterial canker. This is the infection that causes the sticky exudate to ooze out of bark and fruit and will eventually finish off the tree.

Lawns should be left a bit longer in dry weather; they will recover so much more quickly.

IT WAS A SAD DAY but I guess it had to come. The end of June saw the retirement of Fanny Charles, the editor of the Blackmore Vale Magazine. She came to the BVM from the Western Gazette in 1989 when it was still owned and run by Alan and Ingrid Chalcraft and was its first professional reporter.

Within a year she had become the editor, and over the past 23 years she has moulded the magazine into what is now an indispensable local weekly paper. The Chalcrafts sold the magazine in 1993, since when it has been owned by a succession of national newspaper publishers – currently the Local World part of the Northcliffe empire – but Fanny has succeeded in maintaining the integrity, the independence and the high standards of the Chalcrafts while coping with the demands and expectations of the faceless owners. I can’t believe that she really wanted to retire, so I’m sure she will continue to involve herself in countless activities in the Vale. I wish her a long, happy and active retirement and trust that her successor, Fiona Dart, will continue to champion the issues so dear to Fanny’s heart.

Gillingham Matters that started last October. I’ve now seen a copy and can report that it is A5 size and is printed in colour throughout. Its 48 pages are full of news from the town council and local schools, churches and community groups plus, of course, adverts from local traders and businesses. It’s a real local paper and I wish it well.

Which town will the BVM team target next, I wonder.

A Yeovil reader sent me a cutting from the 24th May issue of the Blackmore Vale Magazine reporting that ‘the Higher Ground Meadow near Dorchester has been awarded the title of the best Natural Burial Ground in South West England’, and that the owner has dedicated the award to the memory of her mother who ‘taught me to be fussy about things and the importance of detail’. My correspondent points out that the meadow is in the parish of Corscombe, some 18 miles or more north of Dorchester. It depends what you mean by ‘near’, I suppose, but the reporter clearly thought it was not an important detail.

I wrote last month that advertisers have been known to do some strange things. Here’s another one from the Western Gazette that caught my eye. The advert promised, in large block capitals, a ‘half price full English breakfast’ to anyone presenting the advert at the Bridport café between 8.30am and 10am. ‘Valid until 30th April 2013’, it stated, which must have come as bad news to hungry bargain-hunters.

The Western Daily Press’s astrologer intrigues me. Every weekday she appears somewhat windswept at the top of her ‘stars’ column, until Saturday’s issue when her hair appears all dolled up and dyed. On occasional Mondays her photo appears in the page 2 contents column, by which time she’s back to ash blonde but very neat and tidy to start the week, as shown in the photos above. What does she get up to at the weekends, I wonder.
