T

HE DEvEloPMEnT of new medicines starts with a technique called High Throughput Screening in which researchers screen large collections of chemical compounds in the hunt for molecules that could be potential drugs or be used in drug development in other ways. Although pharmaceutical companies have built up large libraries of compounds over the years, access to their collections has been tightly restricted to in-house use by the owners, but this is set to change. The beginning of this year saw the start of an innovative Europe-wide project which is set to give a major boost to drug discovery. A unique joint compound collection is being established to contain more than 300,000 compounds contributed by pharmaceutical companies and an estimated additional 200,000 compounds generated by universities, research organisations, public bodies and nonprofit groups. Called the European lead Factory, it aims to combine the power of the pharmaceutical industry’s previously inaccessible compound libraries with the innovation of the academic communities to become a centre of excellence in Europe for small molecule drug discovery programmes. It will provide guidance in the design of the experiments, support on medicinal chemistry and help in setting up partnerships with others if needed. In the UK the universities of Dundee, leeds, nottingham and oxford are taking part in the project, which runs for five years and is part-funded by the European Union, and one of the people who has worked tirelessly to get the project off the ground is Dr Robert Stockman, Associate Professor and Reader in organic Chemistry at nottingham University. I mention it in this column because Robert was a child of Visitorland, born a Castle Cary lad in 1971. His interest in the sciences was sparked at Hazlegrove School where his former chemistry teacher James Craig remembers him as a bright student. His education continued at King’s School in Bruton before he went on to study at the universities at Bath and then Bristol where he gained his Doctorate. He is now lead

professor for all the UK universities participating in the project. And if you think the name Stockman is familiar, you are right. His father, Gordon Stockman, has headed Castle Cary Carnival Committee for many years and has been actively involved with the Cary Comedians carnival club since its formation. And with wife Sue he was instrumental in 2010 in setting up the Carnivals in Somerset Promotions Project which not only promotes the carnivals but also records and preserves their history and tries to ensure that young people are enthused and trained in the skills needed to keep the tradition alive. He tells me that the project’s website is now receiving around 25,000 hits each month. Country carnivals and molecular chemistry are poles apart, but here in Visitorland we can be pleased and proud that a local family is nurturing both. NN.

Letters to the Editor Where do we stop?

Sir, I was saddened to see that you received complaints (letters, May issue) regarding a cartoon in the previous issue of The Visitor. Someone, or something, is always the butt of a joke. This has been the case forever, from the cartoons depicting cavemen with their clubs to the last issue showing Margaret Thatcher arriving at the Pearly Gates. There have been jokes about men being hen-pecked, impotent, short, tall, ginger haired, bald, portly, etc. Seaside postcards regularly stereotype women, showing the older ones as harridans with a massive bosom, whilst the young are invariably lissom and wearing a skimpy bikini. Jokes about the Irish, Welsh, Scots, and indeed every nationality abound. There are also jokes about blondes from Essex, spivs from East london, or bumpkins from Devon. I’ve even been known to make jokes about people from Chiselborough! one of the oldest jokes asks, ‘How can you tell when a politician is lying?’ The answer, as we all know, being ‘You can see their lips move’. Whilst this implies that no politician is capable of telling a truth, we readily accept that this is merely stereotyping for the sake of humour. For the record, there are many honest politicians ... and not all accountants are boring either! Whatever the joke subject, the vast majority of people can see the humour, even when they themselves are the butt. If we must censor these cartoons to omit gypsies, other nationalities, Muslims, Christians, people from norfolk, and so on, where do we stop? We will become a completely humourless society, more worried to open our mouths in this country of free speech than the eastern Europeans were under strict communist rule. lighten up please complainers. It is only a joke! Mike orchard norton-sub-Hamdon

... and more ...

Sir, After reading your apology in May's edition, and the two complaining letters demanding an apology (page 5) I just had to look back at my April edition to

see what all the fuss was about. Well, I can't believe anyone didn't find that cartoon amusing, it was spot on. Can only suggest the complaining bodies should get out a bit more and lighten up to what really goes on in the real world. D Hunt Email

... and more ...

Sir, oh dear! Visitor is in trouble from a pair of very rare birds you don't often see. Brits without a sense of humour. nigel Gann and Mrs Coombs are unable to see the funny side of the cartoon in the April issue depicting missing Pearly Gates, suggesting that it is racist. other countries recognise certain traits with the British, a stiff upper lip, binge drinking, and a peculiar sense of humour, often called gallows humour, being just three. Unfortunately Britain hasn't been a World leader for many a long year, probably since nelson gave two prominent E U members a stern ticking off at Trafalgar. Since then we have gradually slipped to second division in the World's who's who, but remain top of the ladder internationally when it comes to humour. We see traits associated with other countries. Thus Americans are gung-ho and gullible, the Germans are humourless, Australians are all ex-convicts, the French are surrender monkeys, and the English depict the Scots as being tight fisted and mean, and the Irish as being, well, a bit thick. We even categorise smaller groups which might include many different races and creeds, for instance politicians are all crooks, civil servants are all shirkers, sailors are all homosexuals, teachers are all left wing and so on. These may well be unfair generalisations but it does make it easy for the Brit sense of humour to click in and identify a group trait to make fun of. Furthermore nothing is sacrosanct. Hence jokes about Savile, Margaret Thatcher's death, horsemeat, the Boston bombing as recent examples, are doing the rounds within hours of a public announcement. This doesn't make the British racist or sick, it just means that we are able to see humour in any set of circumstances, a fact that the

Ganns and the Coombs of this world are too blinkered to understand or accept. Gil Star Shaftesbury Email

Visual Impairment?

Sir, Are you, or is someone you know, visually impaired? If you are then this letter is important for you. local Government cutbacks have resulted in many of you no longer being able to receive our free volunteer service, which offers help with many day to day issues including help with attending appointments, shopping and regular friendship and support. visually impaired people will now find it much harder to access this free service and many of you will no longer qualify for it at all. In order to reach everyone with a need for help, Somerset Sight is pleased to announce the launch of a private service to anyone who may be struggling to manage with reduced vision. A volunteer can help with many things which you may find difficult. You will be expected to contribute towards the cost of running the service but this can be much less than

paying carers to help you with the above and this will be fully explained to you if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. All income for our charity goes towards helping people with visual impairment in Somerset. I would be very happy to discuss what is on offer for you, so please do get in touch if this affects you, or someone you know! Claire Packwood volunteer Co-ordinator Somerset Sight Tel: 01643 708382

Sir, At fifty seven point seven nine percent The Mere area had the highest turn out of voters for all the divisions of The Wiltshire Council local elections. I would like to thank all 1464 people of the Mere Area, which comprises Mere, West Knoyle, Kilmington, Stourton with Gasper and Zeals, who voted to re-elect me on the 2nd May to Wiltshire Council. I was privileged and honoured to receive the highest number of votes of any Wiltshire Councillor. I would also like to thank those of the electorate in Mere who gave me 1136 votes, to re-elect me to Mere Parish Council. George Jeans Mere

Beer & Skittles - P A Baxter

Sir, I always enjoy this column and the one by Chronicler. I don't recall Mr Baxter ever mentioning Boules (or petanque) which is an increasingly popular pub game. I play at The Plough in Manston but it is played at other pubs such as The Kings Arms in East Stour. There is a website - just Google 'Dorset Petanque league Home Page' and you should find more information. Many players of boules/petanque are keen skittlers and switch in the spring to boules and back in the colder and darker months to skittles. I hope that Mr Baxter could use part of his entertaining column to mention our particular pub game which is played in many Dorset towns and villages especially those twinned to French towns and villages. Bruton School for Girls awarded Eco-School Ambassador Status  2013 - 2015

The school is one of only 11 nationwide to have been chosen for the role, and the only educational establishment to achieve the accolade in the South West. Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life. Each of the 11 Ambassadors has been given their own specialism. Bruton School’s is ‘Raising Money through Recycling’.

Catch up - with Queen Camel Tuesday Group

In April, they were introduced to the 'Funny side of Funerals' and strange as it may sound, this talk was just that, witty, amusing and, as one person put it, 'If I thought that Mr. Wakely was going to deal with me, I would die tomorrow!' later in the month they visited 'Chiff-Chaffs,' near Penselwood and

had a very pleasant tour around Mr. Potts delightful garden before enjoying afternoon tea. A return visit to Wyke Farm Cheeses near Bruton followed, this time to see the cheese making process, before some good tasting and buying. In May the Group enjoyed a wonderful illustrated talk by Bob Ayers on 'The Hospitals of london' filled with historical information and enthusiasm. Plus a stunning Art Display by one of the talented members. next month, is a return visit by Rev. Mary Teed talking about 'Pompeii Then and now.' The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. They would love to see you there, and maybe join their very popular ladies group. Dispatches Wincanton Parish Church

In 2009 Wincanton Parish Church underwent a Quinquennial Report. This report identified part of the church roof, the nave, as being in need of urgent repair. In March 2011 a fundraising committee was formed, faced with the daunting task of raising £243,000 which would enable the roof to undergo repair. various avenues of raising this money were explored - grant funding, donations and fund raising events to name a few. With such support, including the local community, enough funding was secured to enable work to commence and at the end of october 2012 scaffolding was erected which would create a safe working environment for the builders. The interior of the church

was also rearranged so regular services could continue in the south side. Work continued all through the winter and was completed at the end of April 2013. The church of St Peter & St Paul is now fully operational thanks to the support of many people from within our community and grant funding bodies and to express appreciation to everyone, a day of celebration and thanksgiving will take place on 8th June 2013. The day will commence with a Celebration Fete in the Church Grounds from 10am - 2pm. This will feature Country Dancing, Books, Jewellery, Plants and much more. It will include lots of fun for the family. Refreshments will be available. In the evening a Free Thanksgiving Concert will take place within the church at 7pm. It will feature The Pilgrim Singers, King Arthur’s School Musicians and Wincantata Handbell Team. Interval Refreshment will be available. These events will provide a platform to formally thank everyone for their generous

Local Natural Burial Ground wins people’s hearts

In a unique new award based on the experience of bereaved families across the UK, Higher Ground Meadow, near Dorchester has been named the best natural Burial Ground in South West England. The natural Death Centre Charity scrutinised the written accounts of experiences of over a thousand members of the public who had buried a family member in a natural burial ground as part of The People’s Awards for the best natural Burial Ground in the UK 2013. Unlike other awards which grade the facilities available on sites or cover environmental issues, The People’s Awards are all about the personal service received when someone arranges a burial in a natural burial ground, and the impact that the manager or owner had on the bereaved families that they helped. ‘Jo’s attention to detail and thoughtfulness were consistently mentioned by families in their feedback forms,’ said Rosie Inman Cook, manager of the natural Death Centre. ‘Time and again, families mentioned how kind and compassionate she was, and that is what The People’s Awards are based on – the human touches that make all the difference at a time of great sadness.’ ‘We are delighted to be able to name Higher Ground Meadow as

the best natural burial ground in South West England on behalf of the many people who chose it as the final resting place for someone they love.’ ‘We’re thrilled at winning this award’ said Jo vassie. ‘We’re committed to giving families choice, space, time and understanding, and families who choose Higher Ground Meadow have come from all over the country. one of the things I find most rewarding is when families or mourners say after a burial ‘I actually enjoyed that’. ‘I’d like to dedicate the award to the memory of my lovely mother, Marjorie Bristow, who died on the 21st April this year aged 99 and was the 105th person to be buried here. It was she who taught me to be ‘fussy’ about things and the importance of detail.’ Burials at Higher Ground Meadow cost between £495 and £695, with the use of Higher Ground Barn for a ceremony and the planting of a native tree included in the price.

Wincanton woman to trek along the Great Wall of China for Alzheimer’s Society

Wincanton resident Rachel Woods has taken up the challenge to trek the Great Wall of China for the Alzheimer’s Society. Rachel said ‘I decided to trek the Great Wall of China for the Alzheimer’s Society after my meeting some individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their carers last year. It was a humbling experience and made me realise how precious our memories are. I can’t think of a more worthy cause. I’m hoping that by doing this to raise funds more support can be provided for carers as well as allowing the Society to continue its search for a cure.’ Rachel hopes to raise over £5,000. H O T E L & R E S TAU R A N T Mark and MELaniE Haddigan are celebrating their 15th year of trading at the northover Manor Hotel, ilchester. Since taking over the Hotel they have undertaken a comprehensive refurbishment programme including the addition of new kitchens and extra accommodation taking the number of letting rooms to 21. More importantly they have established a dedicated and professional team – to include a hotel manager, wedding co-ordinator and an experienced chef and sous chef. With this teamwork in place it ensures high standards are maintained but without losing the individuality and attention to detail that only a privately owned business can offer.

Excellent Food

Head Chef Stu Turner is passionate about good locally sourced food – freshly prepared and at a reasonable price. Together with sous chef Robbie Moore they are able to maintain quality and consistency, this is reflected in the menus. Here, is just a sample to tempt you. To start: Leek, Onion & Somerset Camembert Crumble or Crayfish & Chorizo Frittata with roasted vine cherry tomatoes and saffron aioli. To follow, Dill & Beer Battered Pollock with triple cooked chips, garden peas and homemade tartar sauce, or perhaps, a Pan Seared West Country Rib Eye Steak cooked to your liking. And for dessert a Wild Strawberry Bakewell Tart or a selection of local cheeses. Everything on the menu is homemade including the ice-cream and the freshly baked bread. The relaxed bistro restaurant is open Monday to Saturday evening and a three course menu starts at just £13.95 (available Monday to Thursday changing daily). The traditional Sunday Roast is extremely popular and bookings are strongly advised. Bookings are now being taken for Fathers’ Day. Book a table for 4 on Fathers’ Day and receive a complimentary round of golf for 2 at Yeovil Golf Club (date to be agreed, no Saturdays).

Weddings a Speciality

The northover Manor has become renowned as a wedding venue. It is licensed to perform civil ceremonies and the stunning function room makes it an extra special venue. With exposed walls and a beamed ceiling the function room also has a glass wall giving stunning views over the grounds. Functions for 120 can be catered for and the event is tailored to your personal requirements. This venue is ideal for anniversaries, birthdays and corporate events.

new Venture - Parent and Toddler Sessions

on Wednesday the 5th of June a Parent and Toddler session with Em and Ben will be launched at the northover to include a lunch for the children which is devoid of additives, including dishes such as Cheese & Breadcrumbed Organic Chicken Nuggets with homemade tomato sauce followed by fairy cakes with real fruit icing and chocolate sprinkles. The sessions cost £7.50 and will run every Wednesday from 9.30am until 12.30pm, giving parents a chance to meet with other parents in a relaxed atmosphere, knowing the kiddies will have a good time – and a healthy lunch. The northover Manor – the perfect venue whatever the occasion. For further details and bookings please call or visit the website for full details. Ample parking to the rear of the Hotel.

CAStLE CARY ‘THERE ARE FEW little towns more beautiful than Castle Cary.’ So says Anna Perra who has just opened a new fashion shop and studio in the town. The tourism department at the district council agrees. ‘local hamstone gives Castle Cary a golden charm’, it boasts in its Market Towns brochure, adding that ‘there are excellent shops and the handsome Market House, rebuilt in 1856, is home to an interesting museum’. It was certainly looking beautiful when I visited on a warm Spring afternoon in early May. And the excellent shops were certainly bustling. Traditional trades still thrive in

the busy shopping streets, and the multiplicity of independent retailers selling high-quality goods and offering friendly personal service appeared to be attracting visitors from far and wide as well as catering for local needs. Attractive old shopfronts add period charm to the town centre, and seldom does a shop here remain vacant for long. no sooner does a business close down than another moves in to fill the space, almost always a small specialist business aiming to fill a niche in the market. Castle Cary bears few signs of the dull uniformity of most of the national chains. There is still no soulless superstore on the edge

of town to drain the vitality from the centre. The nearest is six miles away at Wincanton, and most people I have spoken to think that is quite close enough! And still no Costa or Starbucks. Instead the town is well-provided

with characterful cafés, restaurants and pubs offering a wide choice of fare, and some have outdoor seating that creates a continental atmosphere on warm days. Castle Cary still displays the bustle of a thriving

CAStLE CARY when the first stretch of the Great Western Railway’s new line to langport was opened as far as Charlton Mackrell on 1st July. The magazine’s predecessor, the Castle Cary visitor, carried reports of the opening celebrations and invited readers to contribute verses to mark the occasion. The following summer the rest of the line was opened, making it part of a new direct link between london and Taunton and the West Country. Unfortunately the bridge at Castle Cary carries the only road between the station and town, so visitors arriving by rail will face a

stretch of the A371 road used by visitors from Bristol and the Mendips will be closed completely for 19 weeks from Monday 8th July so that network Rail can replace the bridge over the main line west of Castle Cary Station, then it will be open for single file traffic only for a further fortnight until 1st December. The closure had originally been scheduled for last Summer but was postponed following complaints from local residents and traders about network Rail’s failure to introduce measures to reduce the impact of the closure. The bridge dates from 1905 The town’s impressive Market House is being refurbished to provide a warm, dry space for community events and exhibitions.

old market town, and long may it stay that way. The town was bustling, too, in the sense of being busy with plenty going on. A quick glance at the noticeboard by the post office showed it to be overflowing with posters promoting a wide range of activities, events and organisations – a sure sign of a vibrant community. The impressive Market House is being refurbished to provide a warm, dry space for community events and exhibitions – the work is scheduled to be completed by november – and the museum on the first floor is open throughout the summer. If the town’s history intrigues you, it’s well worth

spending an hour or two there among the exhibits reflecting local industries, agriculture, lifestyles and people through the ages. It’s open Mondays to Fridays from 10.30am till 12.30pm and 2.00pm till 4.00pm and on Saturday mornings, and admission is free. A survey of local residents carried out several years ago revealed that 61% of respondents agreed that ‘the future of Castle Cary depends on attracting more visitors’. Sadly that is going to be well-nigh impossible to achieve this year because, as has been widely publicised, the town is going to be cut off from the north for nearly five months. A short

walk of a generous mile over the hill to reach the town. It takes almost half an hour (it took me half an hour, but you might be younger, fitter and faster) starting with the footpath uphill across the field to the main road. Go straight across and along lower Ansford to the church on the left, then ahead along the footpath with panoramic views on the right and straight across Churchfield Drive on to the path alongside the playing field. This leads down to Florida Street and Bailey Hill with its famous lockup behind the Market House in the town centre. In fine weather it is a thoroughly pleasant stroll, but not so much fun if it is wet and windy. Inconvenience for local people and businesses will be massive. Communities north of the railway – Sutton, Alhampton, Ditcheat, lamyatt – will face horrendously long diversions to reach the shops, services,

schools and jobs in Castle Cary. Rail commuters from Cary and Ansford will face similar difficulties in reaching the station. Car and bus commuters to Shepton Mallet and the Bristol area will have much longer journeys. Haulage and delivery companies fear that the diversions will have a dramatic impact on their fuel bills. network Rail’s consultation day to hear the concerns of local people was unfortunately held too late in May for me to report it in this article. Despite the gloomy prospect the town will certainly be open for business as usual, and if you live anywhere south of the railway your journey will not be affected by the road closure. For a town so small, Castle Cary has so much to see, whether your interest lies in the countless old buildings that reveal so much about how people lived in bygone days, or in the many high-quality shops that cater for how we live today. Make the journey and not only will you come away enriched by the experience, you will also have helped to boost the visitor numbers in this difficult year for the town. Roger Richards.

CAStLE Castle Cary Welfare Benefits Surgery set to open

A welfare benefits surgery is set to open to the public in Castle Cary on Friday 24th May. It’s an opportunity for residents to drop in and seek advice or speak with a Support officer in a pre-booked time slot about their welfare benefits. The surgery has been organised by SSDC so that residents can check what benefits they may be entitled to, receive help in applying and review ‘what if’ calculations if their circumstances

change. Three slots are on offer for residents who want to book in advance – 9.30am, 10.30am and 11.30am. These slots can be booked by calling 01935 462462 and asking for a referral to the Welfare Benefits team or by visiting SSDC offices at Churchfield in Wincanton. This service is on offer to the whole of South Somerset in addition to the local surgeries. The Castle Cary surgery will be held at the Methodist Church in Castle Cary and will be held every other Friday, first one will be held on Friday 24th May. It runs between 9.30am and 12.30pm. If an appointment has not been booked you can still attend and hope to be seen if there are free appointments. Councillor Tim Carroll, Deputy leader and vice-Chairman of the Executive said, ‘The local welfare benefits surgery gives residents the opportunities who wish to personally discuss their benefits the chance to do so. We are hoping that the surgery gets so popular that we will have to turn it weekly rather than fortnightly.’

ARTS Moish Sokal Exhibition – ‘Changing World’

Traveller and watercolour artist Moish Sokal is seeing the world change around him. His exhibition Changing World telling this story opens at the Malthouse Gallery, East lambrook Manor Gardens on Monday June 3rd. Following his successful exhibition in the Grant Bradley Gallery in Bristol last autumn, Moish Sokal set his sights for new inspiration. ‘Last year I discovered Morocco for the first time’ he says, “I was so inspired that I decided to visit again in search of new and exciting subjects to paint.’ Sokal landed in Fez home of Morocco’s first imperial dynasty, ‘I dived straight into this ancient city which was initially overwhelming but once I adjusted to the pace, the medina revealed its charms in the most unexpected ways, it was like stepping back in time’. Winding his way through the seemingly blind twisting alleyways, Moish discovered that they lead to squares with exquisite fountains, souk homes, filled with the rhythmic hammer music of copper beaters. A local Diary lost in Fez was where the fun really started. From Fez Moish travelled north to Chefchaouen, sited beneath the peaks of the Rif Mountains. This village with its blue-washed houses and distinct Spanish flavour inspired many colourful paintings before he headed for Rajasthan in India. Moish Sokal’s paintings are colourful, vibrant and atmospheric whether they are scenes of Morocco, India, or his beloved Somerset. Don’t miss his exhibition at East lambrook Manor Gardens which is open daily 10am - 5pm from Monday 3rd June until Saturday 20th July.

BRUTON - a business focus The Montague Inn Best of British

Here at The Montague Inn we champion local, in fact at times I fear we can be a little parochial. However, when surrounded by the very best of produce it seems a little pointless searching the globe for ingredients? our Beef is often grazed in the village, our venison sausages are made with our own mix, while my Best man John Ewins gives us a cracking white wine from north Brewham, Alex grows his salads in Castle Cary and our top cheeseboard is 5 Cheddars all from within 5 miles of the pub. I really don’t think I

need to go on, but I believe British and local certainly are the best!

LOOKING GOOD & FEELING FINE Family Health with

Jenna Evans Superfoods - part 30

THIS MONTH we are taking a look at some super seaweeds. Also called sea vegetables, these powerful nutritionally dense foods are found in both salty and some freshwater areas. A form of algae they have been consumed for at least 10,000 years by the Japanese. Britain also has a rich tradition of consuming sea vegetables, with the traditional Welsh dish laverbread being one example. Sea vegetables contain a broad mineral profile, making them an excellent addition to most diets. They are a rich source of calcium, iodine, and sodium as well as providing good quantities of magnesium, potassium, iron and B vitamins - including B12, which is rarely found in plant foods, making them a great addition to a vegetarian or vegan diet. The lignans in seaweed are thought to

possess anti-cancer effects and the fucons may provide antiinflammatory activity. Sea vegetables are easy to add to the diet and most can just be added to or sprinkled on to your usual foods. There are half a dozen or so commonly found seaweeds on your health food shops shelves, so here are a few ideas on which seaweeds to use for specific purposes. Female Health – Anaemia and hypothyroidism are relatively common problems for younger women. A seaweed called Dulce is packed full of iron and iodine, nourishing the blood and supporting thyroid function. For older women concerned about developing osteoporosis, bone boosting Hijiki can be a useful addition to the diet. Hijiki is very rich in calcium and is also considered to be an excellent skin and hair tonic. The good levels of magnesium and B vitamins found in seaweeds are considered heart protective and the lignans may help manage menopausal symptoms. Try adding Wakame to soups and stews for a nourishing, soothing boost. Fluid retention – Dulse is a potassium rich food that may help with fluid retention. Heart Health – Kombu is an all round tonic, thought to contribute to cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure. The high potassium Wakame may also help manage blood pressure while fibre rich Agar Agar may help manage cholesterol levels. Digestive Health – The soothing fibres found in seaweed, especially Agar Agar, can help manage digestive aggravations and relieve constipation. These fibres are very filling and make a good dieters friend by filling you up without skimping on nutrition. Muscles & Joints – Seaweed provides good levels of minerals important for musculoskeletal health. The proteins provide

Hypnotherapy can help overcome sleepless nights

Hypnotherapy can help insomnia sufferers by dealing with underlying factors that contribute to the condition. Around a third of people suffer from some form of insomnia at some point in their lives, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night or waking up too early in the morning. The effects of prolonged sleeplessness can range from fatigue, lack of motivation, irritability, reduced problem solving skills, inability to cope with stress, reduced immunity and weight gain. Local Hypnotherapist Karla Howes explains ‘Anxiety is a common cause of insomnia, and of course worrying that you’re not sleeping only makes the problem worse. It’s not long before a vicious cycle sets in and the harder you try, the more elusive sleep becomes. It can be really debilitating and can seriously impair a person’s ability to function normally or enjoy life.’ Hypnotherapy can help insomnia sufferers by addressing the underlying anxiety, which may be caused by work, relationships, health or financial worries, for instance. Ruminating on problems serves to amplify their significance and even small issues can get out of proportion in the middle of a sleepless night. Hypnotherapists work with clients to alter their habitual responses to problems and develop more helpful coping strategies. By changing unwanted patterns of behaviour, clients’ anxiety levels reduce and sleep often improves naturally. Karla Howes is a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist practising in Ilminster and East Coker. local photographer achieves regional Success

Somerset-based photographer, Graham Hiscock LBIPP, has received recognition for his work in Wedding photography after achieving a Bronze award and two certificates of merit at the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) South West Regional Awards. When asked about his achievements, Graham said ‘To

have gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the BIPP awards is a real confidence builder in progressing forward in my career in photography’. Graham’s affiliation with wedding imagery began in 1991, while working as a professional videographer. It wasn’t until a decade later that he transitioned from video to print, applying the same level of creativity in his wedding photography as he was known for

in video. This prompted him to pursue a qualification with the BIPP, and in 2005 Graham achieved his Licentiateship in Wedding photography. He describes his approach to Wedding photography as providing a ‘mix of modern contemporary images, together with relaxed traditional and reportage styles. Concentrating on what the bride and groom want from their day is paramount

Though known to cover weddings and parties across the country, most of Graham’s work takes place within an hour of his custom built studio in Wincanton, Somerset. Here he conducts both portrait and product shoots, as well as lifestyle shoots on location. More recently, Graham has been working alongside top London fashion and hair photographer, Barry Jeffrey. BIPP President, Roy Meiklejon FBIPP, stated ‘I was delighted to present the 2012 South West Awards. The images are a wonderful example of professional photography in the region, and highlight why people should always use a qualified professional’. The BIPP Awards are amongst the most highly regarded in the industry. Entry allows members to benchmark their work against that of their professional peers, and success in these awards shows an incredibly high standard of work. Not only are the judges looking for composition and technical ability, but also creativity, interpretation and that ‘wow factor’. House & Home turn a blind eye to your conservatory

In Britain we've had a love affair with conservatories since the 18th century when they were originally used by the affluent as a place to cultivate potted plants and as a link between the home and garden.

Today a well-designed conservatory will be bright and spacious, a stepping stone from indoors to outside. But there's no point in adding an extra room unless you give it an identity and use it on a daily basis. During the cooler weather especially (which let's face it, in the UK

probably amounts to around eight months of the year) it's easy to turn your back on the conservatory and use it as a place to dry washing or even store the bikes! ‘With space at an everincreasing premium, homeowners are looking for clever ways to extend their homes,’ says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. ‘A conservatory can offer just the solution and become a wonderful – and incredibly flexible enhancement to any home.

‘However, without blinds it can suffer from the ‘goldfish bowl’ effect leaving you feeling rather exposed. It can also get too hot in summer and rather chilly during cooler weather. By adding blinds you can provide much needed protection from the heat of the sun, reduce glare and of course help to give it that all important wow factor.’ Here are Sarah’s top tips when thinking about choosing and fitting blinds.

wand operated blinds if they’re going to be left in place most of the time, say in a south facing conservatory. • Always go for one blind per glazing panel wherever possible - smaller blinds are easier to operate, will last longer and are more reliable, plus the design of the roof is maintained. Covering more than one panel at a time will cost less initially but may be the least cost effective overall. • Consider conservatory blinds as an investment. Think about the cost of the furniture and other soft furnishings that you’re putting in the conservatory. Blinds, especially those with a high performing reflective coating will prolong their life by protecting them from the sun’s damaging rays. • It's less critical to have reflective coated fabrics on the sides of the conservatory, but pleated blinds are still a great choice as they fold away to almost nothing when rolled up and can fit snugly into the

put’ and undertake home improvements rather than moving home.

New kitchens, bathrooms, cloakrooms and en-suites are always high up the list of

priorities for homeowners looking beyond surface decoration to more ambitious home improvements.

• Roof blinds will often look lighter than blinds at the side window as the light filters in at different angles. Go for a complete contrast to eliminate this effect. • If you’re after a sleek and contemporary look in your conservatory where the blinds fit flush to the window, allowing windows and doors to be opened with ease, opt for a pleated or venetian blind in a PerfectFit frame. This system is perfect for sealed unit double glazing as the blinds fit seamlessly, with no need for drilling or screws, giving enhanced privacy as they ‘hug’ the window and cover any light gaps.

House & Home When these sizeable investments are made many homeowners don’t think about protecting them with a water softener, yet most English counties are classified as having hard to very hard water and in these areas the shine soon comes off, with unsightly scale and scum around sinks, shower doors, baths, taps, toilet bowls and showerheads. But limescale is not only a visible blight; it causes serious damage to household plumbing and domestic appliances. The resulting build-up of scale restricts the flow of water in pipes and means central heating systems, immersion heaters, dishwashers and washing machines all run less efficiently and are more prone to breakdown. In boilers the deposits impair the flow of heat into water, reducing their efficiency. Mark Nepstad, Consumer Director of Kinetico UK Ltd, comments, ‘Limescale will quickly take the shine off your new bathroom or kitchen, so why not ensure they always stay looking as good as new with a water softener?

‘Softened water makes hair feel soft and silky; laundry is softer and easier to manage; shower doors, taps, glasses and dishes

will all sparkle. It also means spending less on detergents, cleaning products and toiletries. There are important longer-term

benefits too with lower energy bills, reduced maintenance and a longer-life for water-using domestic appliances.

House & Home ‘With the build-up of limescale, boilers and central heating systems operate much less efficiently and, with households currently faced with record energy price rises, installing a water softener is now regarded as one of the best energy saving measures you can take. ‘So, apart from the lifestyle benefits of having soft water in the home, in pure monetary terms a water softener can save a household up to £400 a year.’ For more information about the many benefits of installing a water softener visit the Kinetico website at: www.kinetico.co.uk.

kitchen Styles Classic kitchens

The classic kitchen is a kitchen that has a neutral palette, is simple with unfussy details and is timeless. These kitchens can be made to suit your personality with coloured paints, funky small appliances or coloured glass. All of these being very easy to change and therefore making your kitchen take on a very different look at a low cost.

traditional kitchens

Traditional kitchens are usually wood or painted wood. They can be very detailed with arches, moulding, raised panels, frames, cornice and pilasters. The woods can range from very dark to very light. The painted ones are usually pastel colours.

Contemporary / Modern kitchens

A contemporary / modern kitchen, it is difficult to define between the two. Contemporary is usually kitchens that are of the moment, which are usually designed using the latest trends, technology, materials and colours. Modern is more likely to be about the design style rather than the actual kitchen units. Big banks of units, very straight lines etc.

transitional kitchens

The transitional kitchen is a cross between the Traditional and Contemporary. So take the design of a traditional but make it simpler, leaving out the pilaster, cornice etc. (all the fancy bits) with the simple lines of the Contemporary style. So probably

cleaner has tiny pores in the bag which clog causing suction to drop. Over five years these vacuums can require up to 40 replacement bags and five filters costing up to £175. Not so with a Dyson. Dyson vacuums don’t use bags and they have lifetime washable filters - so there are no extra costs. Dyson’s cyclone technology captures more dirt and microscopic dust than any other cyclone. It traps particles down to 0.5 microns in size - including pollen, mould spores and bacteria. Trapping allergens and expelling cleaner air makes them ideal for allergy sufferers. Dyson has been continually refining its cyclone vacuum technology since inventing it more than 20 years ago. Radial Root Cyclone technology is the latest development. The airflows have been remodelled to maximise suction power. Improved flow efficiency reduces turbulence and preserves air pressure and more microscopic particles are extracted by the inner cyclones. Dyson vacuum cleaners are built to last and you can choose from upright or cylinder; full size or compact; wheeled or ball. All upright and cylinder vacuums are covered by a 5 year parts and labour guarantee. For more information on Dyson vacuums and to take advantage of the special offer currently available, contact A. Leisure spectators turned out to enjoy the exhilarating cross country. This year showjumping in the main arena over all three days will provide even more of a spectacle for visitors, and an array of trade stands and a food corner selling delicious local produce will ensure it’s a fantastic day out. There is a complete mix of trade stands, from jewellery and kitchenware, to furniture and hobbyhorses, to equestrian clothing and saddlery. For a special treat, there are organic cheese picnic boxes to buy and enjoy out on the cross country course where coffee and tea are sold throughout the competition, fresh coffee and cakes and a farmers griddle. Organiser John Colson said: ‘The food corner is a really popular meeting point, as well as a place to sit down, relax and have chat. It’s just off the main arena so not far from the show jumping action which gives a real sense of involvement in the excitement of the competition.’ Classes range from BE100, which is novice level, to a CIC2* which is an international class.

Last year top honours went to locally based Kate Allen from Shepton Mallet who rode her 11year-old gelding Final Encore to victory. Mr Colson said: ‘Nunney Horse Trials is a wonderful way to get out into the countryside, enjoy top level competition and support the local businesses which will be attending to sell their wares. ‘Last year was the first time we staged the event at Southfield House, and it was an incredibly successful competition. We’ve made several changes this year, such as having all the showjumping in the main arena and introducing a lottery to find the title sponsor. As we move forward, we will continue to innovate and make changes where necessary so that it firmly establishes itself as one of the top events in the West Country.’ More information available at www.nunneyinternationalhorse trials.co.uk Follow Nunney on Twitter at @nunneyhorse or find them on Facebook http://www.facebook. com/NunneyInternationalHorse Trials

Cycle-babble AS I WRITE THESE WORDS, Sir Bradley Wiggins is fighting to save his season. Whilst I sit here in Somerset, tapping at my laptop, 1100 miles away, a time trial is in full swing at the start of the second weekend of the Giro d'Italia. The Giro is Italy's version of the Tour de France: a threeweek odyssey around the land of Leonardo da Vinci, the man credited with having foreseen the invention of the bicycle thanks to a sketch, dating from the late 1400s bearing an uncanny resemblance to the modern-day bike, being uncovered in one of his notebooks during restoration work on his Codex Atlanticus (a collection of drawings and writing that ran to 12 volumes). Back to Wiggins. There he is, perched atop a machine not overly dissimilar to da Vinci's imaginings. He's crouched over his handlebars, back stretched flat, long-legs spinning at over 100 rpm, driving his bike forward. An aerodynamic dart whistling through the Italian air. This is his specialty, riding alone against the clock. The race of truth it's known as, and for good reason: nowhere to hide, no teammate to shelter you, no-one to help, no wheel to follow. Just you and your bike and the wind. And the ominous sound of the clock: ticktock, tick-tock, tick-tock. Seconds passing by, never to be recovered. In time-trials huge time gaps come in relatively short distances, which is why anyone hoping to win a major stage race like the Giro needs to be adept at racing against the clock. Last year's Tour, which Wiggins famously won, contained 100km of time-trialling. That in a race of nearly 3,500km. In those 100km Wiggins gained over half of his final winning margin: nearly two minutes of his three minute, 21 second win. Break those figures down and you realise that 60% of Wiggins' margin of victory came in just 3% of the race distance. That's just how important time-trials are in the battle for a Grand Tour win. The Giro is widely regarded as cycling's second most important stage race, after the Tour. Its list of former winners reads like a who's who of professional cycling: Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Jacques Anquetil all having triumphed in the race. Whilst the circus that follows the race is markedly less manic than the one which trawls around France every July, the race is no less difficult. Quite the

contrary. The mountain stages are often longer and steeper than their French counterparts and the socalled flat stages are more likely to include brutish bursts of climbing – short and steep tests of stamina. Throw in the May weather, which even in Italy can still throw a curve-ball to the peloton, especially in the mountains, and you have a race that is not only incredibly tough but also virtually impossible to predict. A fact that came to bear just 24 hours before this time-trial I'm watching when, with the Italian roads glistening with freshly fallen rain that rendered them treacherous, Wiggins lost control of his bike and fell during the descent to the stage finish. He wasn't hurt but he was clearly shaken and continued the descent at the pace of a snail. The result was a loss of over one minute on his main rivals for the overall win. And so to today. The Giro is Wiggins' main target this year, an idea that had been floated as early as September last year. All of his early season preparation had been geared towards getting him onto the startline in peak form. That's why today's race of truth is so important. His season depends on it. It was meant to be the day he puts time into his rivals on his way to victory, but now, thanks to the Giro's unpredictability, things have changed. Now he needs to use today to get back time lost yesterday. Time to see how he did. Well not as well as he might have hoped. He's made up time, but not enough. Nowhere near. His main rival, Vincenzo Nibali rode a stormer and is now in the lead, still over one minute ahead. This will be a real test for Wiggins now, tougher even than last year's Tour. And he has just one more race of truth to come. Will he do it? By the time you read this we will know but right now we still have two weeks of unpredictable racing to come. Just time to let you know of a regular Wednesday night ride in Sherborne. Organised by Dorset Cyclists Network, it takes place every Wednesday, starting at 6pm in Culverhayes car park until midOctober. I'm told the one to two hour ride is at a relaxed pace and has even been known to take in a pub stop. All welcome. For further details contact Peter Henshaw or Anna Finch on 01935 389357. Alternatively just turn up. Giles Belbin. THE VISITOR June 2013 35

Elderly More About Dementia from Hendford Care Home

With a new building like Hendford Care Home they have been able to ensure that the design of the building supports people living with dementia. So for example, you’ll find coloured doors and reminiscence boxes outside the doors to stimulate the memory of ‘this is my room.’ You’ll find that bedroom doors are offset so as not to encourage entry into others’ rooms. You’ll find pictures on the walls that stimulate memory of life years ago. But however good the architecture, maximizing the quality of life for a person living with dementia is about how you relate to them as people, acknowledging that with dementia comes a permanent change – perhaps in mood or in memory, perhaps in personality. For friends and family that in itself can be very difficult to deal with, having to get to grips with the fact that the person you love has changed in ways you would

HartMobility Yeovil Disability & Mobility Products

not have chosen for them and doing so can involve a sense of loss or even bereavement for you. Dementia does not have to be the end. If properly managed it can represent new beginnings. Moving forward with Dementia then becomes a matter of creating a sense of belonging; a sense of purpose – and of continuing to love the person who needs to be loved as much as they ever did. To do this Aurora Care centre their attention on the person and emphasise that they are themselves - not a diagnosis and not a disease. With patience and understanding they look beyond the illness to draw out what is important to your relative; what it is that makes them feel safe and secure; who is important to them. Then they can ensure that daily routines focus on what matters most. Seeing pictures of people that matter most; talking about what is most important; stepping into the reality of the person. All this, ultimately, is what the buzz words ‘person centred care’ is all about.

Caring for the Elderly Independent Bathing Systems

As we get older our bodies just don’t work as well as they used to and although most elderly people want to maintain their independence by looking after themselves in their own homes, this become increasingly difficult for them. In particular climbing in and out of the bath becomes difficult and hazardous for some people and yet being able to relax in a warm bath is a pleasure most people don’t want to forgo. A battery operated bath lift is

the answer and ‘independent bathing systems’ is a local family business which has been specializing in bath lifts now for the last 10 years. They offer installation, servicing and repairs to all types of bath lift and can also offer advice on the range of equipment available.

Cary Brook Residential Home

On 21st June 2013, the UK’s Care Homes will take centre stage in ‘National Care Home Open Day’ providing events and activities to connect care homes with local communities – showing the wider world what life in a care home is all about. We are already ‘blessed’ with support from the ladies (and some gentleman) of The Churches Together group, who visit us regularly (first Monday of each month) and who have brought friendship/chat/support to our residents and staff for many years now. We would like to widen this ‘circle’ and so on 21st June it will be Open House at Cary Brook in Millbrook Gardens, with the aim of turning our neighbours into good friends and creating opportunities for links with people of all ages from the community of Castle Cary, Ansford and surrounding towns and villages. Our agenda for the day will include drumming and singing sessions, picnic lunch, fancy dress wheelchair race, cream teas, BBQ and pub themed entertainment. Our staff and residents are looking forward to welcoming new friends in to our home; the ball is already rolling with two new babies born to members of staff Holly - a daughter to Night Supervisor Cara, and Max - a son to Care Assistant Emily. We hope that you will join us

for a drink and chat on our open day – we believe you will be pleasantly surprised. These attractive talking atomic watches speak the time and date in a clear voice with radio controlled accuracy and they automatically adjust between summer and winter time. Includes the option of an alarm and hourly time announcement. Supplied with a silver tone case with stainless steel bezel and either a leather strap at £54.95, or a stainless steel bracelet strap at £62.95. Battery included. Business Robert Stone & Co Chartered Accountants and tax advisers in Ilminster answers questions from small businesses in Somerset Q1. My company has been trading since 1 March 2013, but my first sales invoices haven't been paid yet, so there is no cash available to reimburse me for the expenses I've incurred personally. Do I have to complete a P11D for 2012/13? Robert Stone replies:

The annual form P11D reports expenses reimbursed to, and benefits in kind made available to the employees and directors. As you haven't been paid any expenses by the company, there is nothing to report on the form P11D. If you have any benefits in kind provided by the company, such as a car, a P11D would be required.

Q2. I've heard about the great tax breaks available under the SeIS scheme. Is this something I can use for my business? Robert Stone replies:

The seed enterprise investment scheme (SEIS) provides investors in small companies with 50% income tax relief, and

an exemption from tax for 50% of the gains they reinvest in SEIS shares (for 2013/14). However, you can't use SEIS to invest in a company you control, as the investor and his associates (basically close relatives), must not own more than 30% of the company. The trade undertaken by the company must also be less than two years old, so to use SEIS the company has to be undertaking a new venture, and be a new clean company. If you have an idea for a new business and you are willing to involve other investors, you may be able to use SEIS to fund that business. But please talk to us first, as there are a number of trades that can't use SEIS, and other conditions to meet.

Q3. I am employed by my company M ltd, and my wife's company T ltd. M and T have completely separate trades and operate independently. I currently take no salary from M ltd and have a modest salary from T ltd. However, HMRC have split my personal allowance 2/3 to the PAYe code issued to M ltd and 1/3 to T ltd. Can I get this changed, and if so how? Robert Stone replies:

All you need to do is ring HMRC on the number shown on your PAYE code notice and ask them to change your PAYE codes. You will need to have your NI number to hand, and estimates as well as the expected level of dividends, interest or other income to be received in 2013/14. If you have an urgent query, do not hesitate to contact Robert Stone on 01460 55661 or email your questions to: info@thevisitormagazine.co.uk

BEER & SKITTLES P. A. BAXTER

IT WAS IN 1957 that I heard Tommy Steele ‘Singing the Blues’. That started a life-long love of all sorts of music. I was shocked that I had never even heard of Cajun and Zydeco until 20 years ago, I was further shocked to learn about 10 years ago of a genre referred to as Klezmer. Isn’t it strange that when you think you have your handle on certain aspects of your loves in life, then something comes along and gives you a surprise? Thus it was that I was introduced to the Dorset Petanque League, thanks to reader Mike Williams, who

informs me that this is often the summer occupation when the winter skittle leagues are not running. Are you surprised? Yes, me too, for despite living in the fair county of Dorset and having always held a bit of a fascination for the game after a visit to France, I was completely unaware of the existence of this league. For those of you who are not aware of the gentle art of Petanqe, or ‘boules’ as it is more widely known, it is perhaps best described as ‘small bowls that one throws rather than rolls’ the object of the game however is still the same as its large relation, and that is to get closer to the jack (or ‘cochennet’) than your opponents. The playing surface is not generally grass and can be stony and indeed rough and even with various obstructions, and although ideas about where it can be played vary, the object is still the same. I have two small booklets on the subject, and one author even goes as far as to say it was not bowls that Francis Drake was playing when the Armada hove into sight, but boules, his reasoning being that it was not possible to make a really flat green and keep it nicely manicured as the lawn-mower had not been invented! I have actually seen boule pistes (or courses, or pitches, depending on which you favour) at the Mitre

Inn Sandford Orcas, The Kings Arms at East Stour, and somewhat surprisingly at The Sherborne Hotel, Sherborne, (where Tesco want to end such frivolous activities’!) Whilst there were no matches in progress at these sites at the time of my stumbling upon them it was pretty obvious what they are there for. So how can one play in the league or even just the

occasional casual game? Well, the best idea is to Google ‘Dorset Petanque League’ for details of pubs and boule clubs and more information, and maybe you too will soon be enjoying the game during our wonderful summer (pause whilst hysterical laughter dies down) and perhaps as news travels via a column such as this and the internet, then boules can be played more regularly in the pub pistes - or even just in a quiet corner of the car park. Another pub game not seen regularly in this area is bat and trap, although word has reached me of the game being played locally. We gave this a plug last month, and when our children were smaller, I made many sets for their friends and neighbours. Fortunately we hung onto some and we still get loads of fun even now – and why not? In Kent and Surrey there are many leagues

with thousands of people playing every week, and countless numbers playing for fun in their local pub or playing field. I can assure anyone, without fear of contradiction, that anyone who plays will soon be surrounded by kids of all ages who soon enquire ‘Can I have a go?’ Joking aside, I thoroughly recommend a serious

look at this game, particularly if you are a hard-pressed landlord looking to get customers in (although to play you will need some room in the beer garden). Sets are available from wellknown makers of games as I have easily discovered on the Interweb, and a serious hand-made set made with top-quality wood

can put you back well over £100, although a set to get you going can be as low as about forty quid – not a bad investment if it gets people through the door of the pub. However, to make your own is far more rewarding and fun, and they last well as I have proved. It’s a game you can play whatever your age or ability, and even still play with a pint in your hand! Oh, and just to let you know, the pivot or ‘spoon’ to give it the traditional name, on my present model is made from Ash and really does take the punishment. There; that’s set you thinking, hasn’t it? I am somewhat bewildered that the Campaign for Real Ale – CAMRA, do not encourage pubs to get more games going, after all, when we skittle each week there are plenty of places

we go where we wouldn’t have gone (and some where we really would not like to have gone either!) as it’s a guaranteed extra 16 people a night if you have a match – plus possibly a few hangers-on. I recently witnessed a pool match which had attracted quite a few spectators, and this was an inter-town match. It was mildly amusing to me as there was a lot of posturing by some of the players, most of whom did not seem to be far out of their teens, if at all. Still, whether I was interested or not didn’t matter; it got people into the bar and money in the till. We had one of our last skittle games of the season at a snooker club, which already had two skittle alleys and another was added recently. I hear that there are plans for yet another ally as snooker and indeed, pool, are not attracting the numbers that they used to. Skittles goes on forever it appears, despite predictions of the doom-mongers. A game that does appear to have been around forever is Backgammon – mentioned last month and played at a couple of venues in Bradford Abbas. I attended both the pub (Rose and Crown – Marstons Ales) and the Sports Club (Yeovil Ales, bottle-

conditioned), where turn-out was an encouraging 11 and 10 participants, although the club (an informal one) is in its infancy. The game goes back for up to (as far as?) 5000 years – depending on what source you turn to, and one thing is certain; it’ll be around long after any of us. Learned in minutes but taking a life-time to master, fortunes can be won or lost if you (foolishly?) play for money.

Beers tested this month include ‘Tapping the Admiral’ from Shepherd Neame, a fairly run-ofthe-mill 3.8%ABV beer but a pleasant stand-by (and only 99p from a supermarket), various Ginger Beers of the alcoholic persuasion for the better half of the relationship (although I do steal a sip or two) and all had likeable qualities. This is quite a surprise to me, and perhaps you may consider them worth a try –

your local pub may well stock one or two, as ours does. Yeovil Ales IPA as mentioned (5.4%ABV) not too much sediment but still take it gently – a very good ale by the way. I was not able to try the stout as they’d sold out which I take as a good sign! We liked him last time so we have invited him back . And finally: the local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation. “He’s a funeral director” she answered. “Interesting” the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now - in her 80’s - a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”  TooT TooT!!!

Celery

CELERY WAS FIRST introduced into Britain in the 17th century as an Italian salad food. However, English cooks soon developed it as a cooked vegetable and today it is included in soups, sauces and savoury hot dishes, as well as salads. Celery is grown for its roots, stems, leaves and seeds - all of which can be used. Wild celery, from which cultivated strains have been developed, was used both gastronomically and therapeutically as smelling salts. For a long time both popular opinion and gastronomic writers considered celery to be an aphrodisiac.

Celery - The Facts

Season - Celery planting starts at the end of February with harvesting (depending on the weather) starting in early June and finishing in early November. At its quickest growing rate celery takes just 11 weeks from planting to mature into a crop ready for harvest. hand harvested - Celery is still all harvested by hand in the open field using a special shaped knife – cutting by machine just doesn’t give the same quality of product. healthy Snack - Celery has long been regarded as an ideal food for those trying to manage their weight due to its low calorie status and high water content. However, it's a good source of potassium and high in calcium too – which is important for healthy bones, blood pressure and nerve function. And don't forget the leaves either, and the darker the better, as they contain carotene and more minerals and Vitamin C than the paler leaves. Only 2 Calories per Stalk Celery is extremely low in calories - 1 stalk contains just 2 calories – and is virtually fat free, making it a great snack or ingredient for slimmers. Celery’s high water and fibre content and crunchy texture

Wine & Dine are not only brilliant for helping feel satisfied, but also for getting people to chew their food well and ensuring they stay fuller for longer. Reduces Blood pressure Traditionally used in Asian medicine to treat high blood pressure, more recently studies have found that animals given celery extract (the equivalent of 4 stalks) had reductions in blood pressure of between 12 - 14% within a week. Urban myth - Celery has negative calories i.e. it takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. We hate to admit it, but this is a myth! Fresh and full of flavour, the following sweet and sour satay dip will not only give friends and family a taste of the Orient, but also provides a perfect contrast to the cool fresh crunch of the celery too.

Satay Dip with Celery Wedges

Ingredients 50g/2oz desiccated coconut 240ml/8 fl oz hot water 5 tbsp crunchy peanut butter 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 small clove garlic, crushed 1-2 fresh green chillies, seeded and finely chopped 1 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp lime juice Serve with plenty of celery! Method 1. Put the coconut into a bowl, pour over hot water and leave to soak for 15 minutes. 2. Strain the mixture into a saucepan, pressing well to

extract all the liquid. Discard the coconut. 3. Add the remaining ingredients and stir over a low heat until well blended. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Celery creates a great base flavour for lots of different casserole recipes and is especially good when cooked down with shallots and garlic in the following tasty summer dish.

Saffron Braised Chicken with Peas, Almonds and Garlic

Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 4 free-range chicken legs, cut in half 4 shallots, chopped 2 sticks of celery, chopped 4 cloves of garlic, sliced 1 tbsp flour 200ml dry sherry A pinch of saffron 1 pint chicken stock 2 bay leaves Salt and pepper 150g shelled fresh peas (approx. 500g unshelled) Bunch flat leaf parsley, chopped

100g toasted almonds, roughly chopped Method 1. In a large flameproof casserole pan, fry the chicken in the olive oil for 2 to 3 minutes on both sides or until golden, then remove and set aside. 2. Next add the shallots, celery and garlic, cook until translucent and lightly golden, about 6 to 8 minutes. 3. Stir in the flour, sherry, saffron and stock, stirring all the time until the sauce comes back to the boil. Add the bay leaves and then season with salt and pepper. 4. Add the chicken back into the casserole pan. Place on the lid and cook on a low heat for ½ an hour or until the chicken is starting to fall away from the bone. 5. When the chicken is almost cooked, add the peas and cook for a couple of minutes, turn off the heat and add the parsley. 6. Divide between 4 warm bowls and sprinkle with almonds. MoToR VInTAGe Motor Cycling I HAVE SPOKEN before of the importance to attend your clubs Annual General Meeting. It is the one time in the year when you have the opportunity to have your say as to how the club is run, and hopefully to make a positive contribution to the future. I am lucky in that the AGM for the VMCC is held each April at the National Motorcycle Museum on the outskirts of Birmingham. A trip of 150 miles each way for a rather dry meeting may not seem like fun, but this years meeting was well worth the effort. Firstly we travel up early in the morning which gives us at least two hours to look at the impressive display of around 400 machines all of which are of British manufacture. All machines are to show standard and there is such a variety of machines on display. There you can see makes of bikes either previously unheard of or perhaps only read about in books. I go to the museum at least once a year and always find something different and interesting to look at. With the nice restaurant and conference facilities it is a fine place to visit, whether for a day trip or a club outing. Treat yourself to a day at the National Motorcycle Museum, you will not come away disappointed. My picture this month shows three machines from this collection. From the left is a Royal Enfield, a Rover and a Clyno. All very rare and a minute part of this motorcycle assembly. Slipped into the last budget there were a few changes that received no publicity. One of these changes was that 1973 vehicles no longer pay Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax). When the exemption first came into being the applicable date was rolled forward by one year each year. Then a government

stopped this issue and the VEL exemption got stuck on December 1972. Now our government has seen fit to bring the exemption date forward to December 1973, thus allowing all vehicles registered before 1st January 1974, to qualify for a free VEL. Remember you still need to display the VEL, it is just that you no longer have to pay for it. Nobody yet knows if this was a one-off gesture or whether there will be another rolling year next year and thereafter. Another change is that once a vehicle has been sorned (Statutory Off Road Notification) it will remain on SORN for as long as the owner wishes. No longer do owners have to make a new SORN each year. A bit of common sense for once. I mention this every year that June sees the running of the Banbury Run. This is a national event held specially for the pre 1931 machines. As usual there will be around 600 machines taking part with entrants travelling from all over the United Kingdom and many coming from the continent. I suspect there will be riders from America and Australia as well.

Nowhere in the world will you be able to see such an assembly of machines all taking to the roads. The event will take place on June 16th from the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon, Oxfordshire. If you are interested in any form of motorcycling there are two events at which everyone should either spectate or better still get out and take part. Those two are the Banbury and the Isle of Man road races. Another good suggestion for a splendid day out. Locally our riding events continue apace. During June the Somerset Section has a Ride a Bike Night on the 6th followed on the 9th with the Girder Fork Run from Emborough and lastly they have an Evening Meet at the Lamb Inn, Spaxton, on the 20th. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section has a Run from Shearstock (Gillingham) on the 2nd and has a guest speaker at its club night on the 10th. Dorset has an Evening Run for its club night on the 12th, a Mid-Week Run from East Stour on the 19th, and the Purbeck Run from Bere Regis on the 23rd. For more details of these events ring 01935-872528. Other clubs are just as busy so check them out. Come along to any of these events and you will be made welcome but be warned that these activities can become

addictive and you can easily become more involved. I am writing these words over the early May Bank Holiday. We are enjoying superb motorcycling weather being pleasantly warm and dry. The last few days have been a delight to be out and about on two wheels. I am not alone with this because as I have travelled around it has been noticeable the incredible increase of motorcycles on the road. I dearly hope we have a good summer this year so the fun can continue unabated. We are certainly due a decent summer as the last few years have been a washout, literally. My workshop facilities are now reduced to zero as we prepare for the demolition of our existing dwelling and the building of a new one. All very exciting as things start to happen, and for ease and convenience I am restricting my riding to three bikes this year to cut down on maintenance. I have other facilities available to do some cleaning and tinkering but for an easy life we will keep things as simple as possible for this year. Therefore no progress has taken place on my Rover and other projects. But watch this space when the new buildings are completed. Rod Hann.

GARDENING GARDenInG MonTHlY by Richard Cumming Orchard Park In Blossom at last!

IT SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN longer than ever to get the blossom to come, but it has eventually happened. I think we probably missed some of it because the foul weather at times has driven us back indoors! Hopefully by the time you read this we will be enjoying a blissfully warm and pleasant summer month. So, on the plus side late blossom has missed the frosts and we should get a bumper fruit crop. We more or less missed out altogether last year when the early start to the year petered out leaving us feeling that we had been robbed! Our summer had been stolen. This year will be different;

already the barbecue has been cleaned and used a couple of times, and I am really keen to make the garden easier to maintain so that we can have more time enjoying it and spend less time working on it!

types providing there is good drainage. They prefer a position that is sunny and not too exposed. If you are replacing old roses with new ones, ensure that the old soil is removed and replaced with fresh soil; this will avoid the soil sickness problem that is associated with roses. Ideally a site that has never grown roses is best. Container grown roses can be planted at any time of the year providing the ground is not frozen

GARDENING can make. The Hampton Court flower show is often used as a launch pad for new roses. Certain rose types like the species, ‘musk’ and ‘old English’ can be added to mixed borders to create the cottage garden effect. There are roses for every aspect of the garden, from cladding walls and pergolas to providing informal barriers. Rambling roses can be used to cover old stumps and unsightly fences or walls. Local clay soils suit roses down to the ground – just as long as you can add plenty of well-rotted compost or manure, as they do best with plenty of organic matter in the soil.

tubers are swelling will give a great reduction in yield. If you have got a water butt nearby then at least you can water without guilt! Save water by applying it early in the day so that it doesn’t evaporate before it can soak in. Wet leaves over night are never a good idea as those are the perfect conditions for fungal disease to develop. No potato blight yet, but I am signed up for blight warnings by phone text, when temperatures are above 10ºC and humidity is greater than 75%80% for 2 days or more. So will use a preventative copper spray on the leaves if conditions require it. It is not absorbed into the plant but stops fungal spores carried in the wind from developing. Carrots can be difficult; best results come when sown thinly in a fairly firm and even seed bed. For really productive use of a limited area of land, come and cut again salads are well worthwhile. These are a range of leafy vegetables which can be grown as cut and come again, including: Amaranth, basil, beetroot, chicory, coriander, chard, corn salad, dandelion, endive, komatsuma, land cress, leaf celery, lettuce, mizuna, mustard, pak choi, parsley, purslane, radicchio, red kale, rocket, sorrel and spinach. And there are crops usually grown for their roots such as beetroot, radish and turnip which also have leaves that are tasty when harvested young. Spinach can be sown repeatedly – treat it like a salad crop sowing a little every couple of weeks to get a constant supply. In the vegetable garden plant out runner beans, tomatoes, courgettes and anything else you’ve been hanging on to. Leeks should be planted out, carrots sown [late crops are less likely to

GARDENING be attacked by carrot root fly] onions hoed, sweet corn sown, parsnips sown and herbs planted out. Greenhouse tomatoes need constant removal of side shoots and weekly feeding – switch from general fertiliser to tomato fertiliser as the first flowers appear. Greenhouse capsicums and aubergines need to be kept growing so that they are strong enough to produce and support a good crop – again feed is important. Grow-bags are very poor in nutrients they only act as a growing medium, if you don’t add feed then the plants won’t produce. Outdoor bush tomatoes don’t need side shooting as their habit is quite different. Outside the veg plot, taller growing plants such as Delphiniums and hollyhocks need support, then take out flowering spikes as soon as they have finished to keep plants flowering. Weeding is vital this month if you want to keep on top of it; Ready-to-Use spray bottles of glyphosate are really useful and are specially formulated to last

for quite a while. Every good gardener should have a push hoe somewhere nearby to use on the seedling and annual weeds. Cheapest and safest method [once you’ve got your weeding eye in!] Lawns need regular mowing to

keep down the broadleaved weeds and encourage the finer leavedgrasses. If you mow and remove the clippings then you really should feed it. Good multipurpose lawn treatments are not nearly as expensive as they used to be and the difference is

noticeable. The pest and diseases are now evident, greenfly and black spot will be the most common especially on roses. The weather will govern the amount of mildew or botrytis we see. Hot weather will produce powdery mildews,

GARDENING and wet evenings will encourage black spot on roses and downy mildews. Cold wet weather generally encourages botrytis – good ventilation will help. Combined rose fungicides and insecticides work well, and if you make sure the plant doesn’t get under stress by giving it adequate feed and water, you should be able to get the best out of them. June is often dead plant month, as so many problems suddenly show up at this time – plants that have suffered over the winter, can live on their sap for a while

then suddenly collapse. Cut back to healthy growth if possible. If it’s not possible plant a new one. Most evergreens can be trimmed to maintain their shape; keep wall shrubs and climbers tied in and prune off the growth that is obviously heading in the wrong direction.

RECYCLING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

the end bit... PAPeRCHASe

COMPUTER spell-check software is clearly no substitute for careful proof-reading. Here are two recent examples that jumped off the pages of the Western Gazette and the Blackmore Vale Magazine. In the 25th April issue the Gazette’s property editor wrote that ‘one of the first things you’ll need to way up is cost’ (no way is way the weigh he means) and in a BVM company profile in the 26th April issue the businessman is quoted as saying that ‘my father leant me the money and set me up’ (clearly dad’s leaning was towards lending). Both misspellings passed the spell-check because they’re in the software’s dictionary and would be correct in a different context. Property advertisements provide me with an endless source of amusement. Two that caught my eye were in the 19th April issue of the Blackmore Vale Magazine. One agent publicised a ‘spacious maisonette with views of downland, storage and an off road parking space’ (since when has a view of a parking space been a strong selling point, I wonder), and another was selling a ‘stone three bedroom character cottage with period features with a good sized garden in need of modernisation’ (although I suspect it’s the cottage rather than the garden that needs modernising). And why won’t the agents use hyphens when they would make the meaning clearer? This classified ad in the property lettings section of the same issue

intrigued me. The cottage to let is claimed to be ‘on working farm, 7 miles south of Shaftesbury, 10 miles north of Sherborne’ which is a geographical impossibility. I wonder where it really is? For an example of resurrecting old copy to fill a bit of space, how about this from page 11 of the Western Gazette property supplement on 2nd May? A halfpage feature titled ‘5 things to know before installing solar panels’ endeavoured to answer such questions as ‘Is your property suitable for the installation?’, ‘Do you need planning permission?’ and ‘What is the difference between solar thermal and solar photovoltaic panels?’ It was the fourth question that raised my doubts – ‘How much do solar panels cost and what grants or ways of making money are available?’ – because although a lot of figures

were quoted there was precious little on feed-in tariffs. Then came this sentence: ‘The government’s Renewable Heat Incentive is expected to come into force during 2011’ and ‘the details are not yet available’. Five months into 2013 and nobody bothered to read and update the copy before going to print. You might think the previous paragraph seems vaguely familiar, and you would be right. You read it before in last September’s Paperchase after the same out-of-date feature had been printed in the 26th July issue of the Gazette. Clearly the paper is still wedded to its old slipshod ways. The Gazette’s property supplement in the 18th April issue contained a four-page feature entitled ‘Living in Castle Cary and Bruton’, and what a misnomer that turned out to be.

Sudoku

by

To separate the adverts there were short articles on conflict, commerce and royalty in Castle Cary’s history, Cary’s historic buildings and museum, Cary’s clubs and societies and Cary’s shops and market, together with a ‘factfile’ of supposedly useful Cary telephone numbers and four photographs of Cary. Tucked away at the end of one of the articles were four short sentences about Bruton. If I were one of the Bruton businesses that had been persuaded to advertise in this feature I would be demanding my money back. And resolving never to be conned again by the Gazette’s advertising reps. Finally, how about this from the front-page of the Western Daily Press on 10th April? I’m surprised the spell-check didn’t pick it up and offer a correction. Chronicler.

Castle House Nursing Home Keinton mandeville Gold StandardS accreditation A resident receives one-to-one attention from Activities Co-ordinator Annette Lock, in the Reminiscent Room.

Jo MARSHALL and her staff at Castle House Nursing Home, Keinton Mandeville hold the prestigious Gold Standards Framework Award national accreditation. This ensures that residents wishes are paramount, clearly understood and acted upon in their latter days - e.g. not in hospital or with a priest in attendance. At Castle House the ethos is very much home-from-home and the residents freedom of choice and individual requirements are to the fore - throughout their stay. This is reflected in many ways in the home, including the monthly residents meeting where they can air their views and make their requests on light-hearted matters such as what they would like for Christmas Day Lunch - when incidently, a glass of bubbly for everyone was requested! (and received) - through to more serious matters on any concerns or queries they may have. Big or small choices are

The bright and airy Sun Lounge overlooks the attractive garden.

important to everyone to keep their identity. The re-decorated purpose-built Nursing Home is light and airy and all on one level, so residents have easy access throughout the home and gardens. Fresh flowers throughout, the pet cat called ‘Wilma’, a pet rabbit called ‘oscar’ and gold fish all add a homely touch. There is always a daily programme of

activities for those that wish to take part including quizzes, sing songs around the piano, flexacise etc., and activities co-ordinator Annette is bursting with new ideas. Proving popular are visits from a group called the Reminiscent Angels - who choose a different topic to reminisce about on each visit, such as Somerset - this would include tastings such as a Somerset cream tea, costumes from days gone by, old photographs and a film show. A programme of events has already been planned for 2013. Castle House supports St. Margaret’s Hospice and they hold events regularly to raise money. These, like many events at the home, are supported by the local community in which the home tries to take an active part, in turn supporting village events. Castle House offers 28 single rooms and 2 doubles - all have ensuite facilities and television. Residents are actively encouraged to bring in their own effects to personalize their room and their name is on the door with any photos they may care to add. Pets can be accepted at the home on request. Volunteers are encouraged to call in for an hour or so each week and to chat to the residents. This acts as fresh stimulation and also assists the social companions employed by the home who talk to residents who perhaps prefer not to join in the group activities but like to chat or do puzzles on a one-to-one basis. There are plenty of places for residents to enjoy each others company including

the Sun Lounge which overlooks the garden, the Reminiscent Area with its books and albums and the Lounge / Dining Area. The home is set in six acres of beautiful landscaped grounds and the residents are actively encouraged to take an interest, including their suggestions for flowers and colours they would like to see planted. The kitchen garden supplies the kitchen with fresh produce and herbs. All the food is locally sourced and freshly prepared. Residents look forward to meal times as there is always a good choice of menu. Special diets can be catered for and for those who like a drink with their meal - the tipple of their choice can be provided. Looking good is important whatever your age so hairdressing, chiropody etc. are readily available, as are full medical and dental requirements. Clergy from all denominations visit regularly. Being a nursing home ensures that should the health of a resident deteriorate there is no need for the upheaval of moving. This family run home offers a high standard of individual care in a homely environment. If you would like to know more or would like to visit, please call 01458 223780 or call in person. Respite and day care facilities are also available. A Visitor Profile.
