December is surely the season for celebration, joy, thanksgiving, and the like. Ecclesiastes 3:4 says, a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Take time to laugh and dance with your loved ones. Bring them close, embrace them, and show them how much you appreciate them. Also, reach out to strangers and show them the love of Christ which overflows out of the depths of your soul. Ecclesiastes 3:8 says, a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. The Gift the person of Jesus. Proverbs 17:8 states, “A gift is a precious stone and no matter which way it turns it prospers.” How is this possible? Well let’s look at it. A manufacturer who makes a gift, whatever it may be, is benefited when a merchant purchases it. It then benefits the merchant because he has something to sell a customer. The merchant’s business profits when a customer buys the product. The customer then benefits Elder Calvin Vance because they have something he/she wants to give someone. Lastly, the As the Christmas season progresses recipient of this gift is blessed bewe see people shopping and children cause it is an expression of love from who can hardly wait for “that day.” the one they received it from. Not Just For Teacher’s Only By: Eva Johnson

What is The Tallit (Prayer Shawl)? Numbers 15:37-40 King James Version (KJV) 37

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: 38

39

And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them ; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: 40

That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.

On the plane returning from the Conference in New York, I had the opportunity to speak with a Rabbi who was wearing a Tallit around his waist and I asked him about it. He told me that he is required to wear it every day to remind him of the 613 Commandments of God and to keep him from doing the wrong thing. Of course when I got home I couldn’t wait to research the meaning of the Tallit and why Christians have decided to adopt it. Definition: A Tallit is a fringe garment traditionally worn by Jews. Tallit simply means: “a robe or a cloak.” The Tallit was not originally associated with prayer. The corner fringes called: “tzitzit” in Hebrew, were put on the garment to remind the Jews of God’s laws. According to the Jewish religion, the Tallit is only worn during the daylight hours and is forbidden to be worn in the evening. Jews believe that according to Numbers 15:37-40, “look upon it” implies daytime, when the fringes can be seen. Each fringe contains 8 threads and 5 knots for a total of 600 to correspond to the 613 commandments in the Torah. The fringes also underscore the doctrine of Judaism, “the Lord is one.” Several Rabbinical writings talk about the Tallit. They are the Midrash and the Mitzvah.

Mid·rash[ˈmidˌräSH] An ancient commentary on part of the Hebrew Scriptures, attached to the biblical text. The earliest Midrashim come from the 2nd century ad, although much of their content is older. Mitz·vah[ˈmitsvə] Judaism; a precept or commandment; a good deed done from religious duty. A single strand of blue thread is a reminder of the duties and obligations of a Jew. In Orthodox congregations only the married men wear Tallit. They gather the fringes (tzitzit) in their left hand and kiss them when a paragraph from the Torah is recited. The Tallit actually inspired the design of the flag of Israel.

Facts about the Tallit: Sign of Jewish pride Reminder of Torah’s 613 do’s and don’ts Reminder to live a Mitzvah centered life It is worn under clothes daily It is made of either wool or linen Usually worn by wealthy or distinguished Rabbis Worn at weddings, funerals, holidays Has to have 4 corners Note: After the dispersion of the Jews from Israel they came to adopt the fashions of their gentile neighbors and the Tallit became a religious garment for prayer calling it a “prayer shawl.” ...continued on page 11

Jews would pray with it on and even wrap it around sick children believing that all prayers said while wearing the shawl would help heal the child. We are benefited because by the gift of Jesus, we become God’s children and receive of His Spirit whereby we call him Daddy/Father. We are given His divine nature. We are given the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord and are caused to triumph. We are made kings and priests unto God, we are giving authority over the enemy, receive everything that pertains to life and godliness, we have eternal life and so much more! So as we celebrate this holiday season, let’s reflect on, realize and remember the significance of what God did for us. We are what we are; we have what we have and can do what we do because of. . . “The Gift!” James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes

(Dispersion, The Jews Of The or simply THE DISPERSION, was the general title applied to those Jews who remained settled in foreign countries after the return from the Babylonian exile, and during the period of the second temple)

Okay, so why do some Christians choose to wear the Tallit as well? Well, now it’s your turn to do your own research and find out why. Happy Researching!
