Heard of Jason Russell? About a year ago, he was almost unknown. -However, in the space of a couple of days, a few things changed and he became quite well-known. Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 campaign became the most viral video of all time. 100 million views in six days. It was simply unprecedented. Their website went into meltdown, and days later so did Jason Russell. For years he had struggled to get his voice heard—nek minnit, his was the most sought after interview around. Crazy. Where were you a year ago? I was a mere second-year student, single (sort of) and in the midst of planning a whirlwind trip to Mongolia, China and North Korea. Something I find maddening is the old ‘what are you doing next year?’ question. Because the old ‘I’m not sure’ answer never seems to cut it. But what if I don’t know, is that ok? All I can do is try to have faith, and to listen and follow the sound of His voice. Easy to do? Not for me.

Your Year Josh Dye

So when you look back in a year’s time—assuming you do not have a video with 100 million views—what will you remember about 2013? A trip overseas or into Morisset? Breaking the rules, or breaking a leg? Will it be the late nights spent chatting in a friend’s room, or spent chatting up a special friend? Or maybe it will just be the hours wasted in the queue at student finance… Whatever your dreams are for this year, make them happen. Chase them, pray about them, work towards them, and make them happen. Make this year memorable. Because you only live ones.

Ahh, the beginning of another year at Avondale. The first few weeks can be a daunting experience—but everyone’s been through it, and most have survived. Many a social faux pas has been made during this time of year though*, so I want to lend a helping hand to the new students who are perhaps not yet making the lifelong friends promised by the marketing department. And, to even squeeze in a Bible quote, hopefully you will “grow in favour with man.” Don’t be that… • Couple who get caught at Lovers’ Ledge • Thief who steals clothes from the drying room • Fourth-year that dates a first year • Addict who does multiple degrees in a row, just to stay at Avondale • “Artist” who expects to get a job after studying an arts degree • Annoying mature-age student

Don’t be that College student... Mark Tipple

• Gym junkie who hits the protein shakes as they walk into the caf after a workout. • Social sook, suffering severe FOMO from one missed Maccas run • Anti-social who goes to bed before 12 • Tasmanian who sends their food tray through without cleaning off the scraps • Animal who poos in the shower • Cheap friend who borrows someone’s car and doesn’t put petrol in • Child who shoves people’s clothes on the floor in the drying room to make room • Fourth-year who graduates single And, most of all, don’t be that guy

dominating the lecture • Pest starting arguments on Facebook • Hermit who is always in their room or the library

* The writer himself may have committed some of these ‘crimes’, so no one is safe.

• Worship leader leading the charge to the clubs on Wednesday night •

Mark thought he’d never come to Avondale, and his study habits suggest he’s not in a hurry to leave. He likes authenticity and hates people trying to impress others.

Someone once said that 4am was the most raw and honest time of the day. You won’t hear me disputing that—whispered conversations over the rustle of sleeping bags make my heart smile. “What gets said in this room stays in this

The Honest Hour Annalise Lindsay

room!” One thing I’ve learnt in my relatively short life is that everyone yearns to be loved— for someone to be interested in the small details of their life, for someone to listen and care unconditionally. I want to listen to your story—the twists and turns that made you the person you are today. Tell me what makes you tick.

There are many 4am moments to be experienced in 2013. Some with bleary eyes and head bent over a dim laptop screen preparing a last-minute presentation due in a few hours. Some spent crashed on the mattress, out cold. And yet others will be spent in a hallway opposite a friend’s room, the hushed words spilling secrets and sharing souls.

To be honest, I’m not going to remember how the rain affected your busy Tuesday morning, or about how warm the weather was on Friday. But I am interested in who bought you that lovely emerald scarf you wore to last night’s 7:28. I want to know who’s supporting you here at Avondale from home—if not financially then prayerfully, perhaps. Tell me about the hourglassshaped bruise you’re showcasing from that fast-paced basketball game last week. Tell me your best friend’s middle name.

Music: ‘Flume’ by Flume Flume’s self-titled debut album was released in November 2012 and quickly made waves in the mainstream market. You’ll probably hear the album’s singles blasting from all three dorms, but that’s not a bad thing. Flume combines various genres and pulls them together with an electric twist—great for setting a mood and feeling good about life no matter the situation. So, legally download the album, get some good headphones and enjoy an awesome first entry from an up-and-coming Australian artist. Food: Café Rejuve Rejuve is a treasure to its regular customers, but an untapped resource for most indoor students. The setting is laid-back and relaxing, not the idea some may have considering its location at the back of a church. Their emphasis on fair trade and support for various charities is a good representation of active, modern Christianity. Rejuve is a great place to sit and have a coffee, enjoy Wi-Fi that works and meet other people passing through Avondale on their life journey. YouTube: Roman Collective YouTube channel This channel features a range of videos made by Avondale students over the past few years—an unofficial College channel, if you like. Avondale’s recent attempt at a ‘Harlem Shake’ is now online, as well as the Watson Hall videos and other classics from 2012. Keep an eye out for more this year.
