Expo 2020 Dubai: World spectacle to see

I

recently returned from a week visit to Dubai, although it was for The Voice Achievers Award 2021 but I took out time to see the amazing wonder Dubai government has prepared for the world to see. The Expo 2020 pavilion is ready and by the time you are reading this editorial, it would have been declared open for world visitation and viewing to inspire the participating countries on how best to develop their countries for the future now. It has been tagged the World’s Greatest Show. Hosted by Dubai, the first-ever World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region is in and of itself an unmissable sixmonth affair. It is a confluence of 200-plus countries and entities bringing you and your family interactions with robots, food dished out by Michelin-star chefs, treks with gorillas and live shows starring your favourite singers. It all began with The Great Industrial Exhibition of 1851 in London. Fast forward 170 years later, humanity now enjoys problem-solving tech, from our telephones to electric cars, which were first revealed at Expos. Equally thrilling innovations will be introduced to the world at Expo 2020 Dubai (hint: a mode of transport that travels faster than airplanes), which has been running under the slogan of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ for the past eight years whilst under preparation. The World Expos are a global platform regulated by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), taking place every five years. Once the host nation is elected, it then invites other countries to showcase their achievements and inventions in diverse pavilions for a better future. On November 27, 2013, Dubai won the bid to host the 34th World Expo. This time round, great minds are not only envisioning a greener, more sustainable tomorrow but they are also driving action in real time through Expo 2020’s grassroots initiatives such the World Majlis series, 10 Thematic Weeks –

debuting with the critical Climate and Biodiversity Week and the Global Best Practice Programme (GBPP). If this sounds like a lot of information to digest, fear not because the site is split into three Thematic Districts anchored in the sub themes of Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity. Country pavilions located in each wing have something to say about their Pastor Amb. Elvis Iruh Editor-in-Chief progress and aspirations in terms of allocating resources, moving faster and better and unlocking potential within their people. The representative Thematic Pavilions (Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity Pavilions) will become your one-stop source for how we can move forward to meet the world’s most critical challenges. Expo 2020 Dubai will run from October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, after which the site is planned for a major urban project known as District 2020. You can visit the fair on all seven days of the week. From Saturday to Wednesday, the timings are 10am to 12am (midnight); on Thursday and Friday, from 10am to 2am (midnight). If you are in Dubai, I would encourage you to visit, to get inspired and see how countries are advancing into the future. African government should send their thinkers and policy makers to this world exhibition so they can bring the great ideas back to their home country, some African government are being represented in the opening ceremony I gathered. Congratulations to Dubai for this great piece of world wonder; someone said to be DUBAI is becoming the 7th Continent of the world. The truth may be far-fetched. Enjoy your special edition where we report on the recently concluded the Voice Achievers Award 2021 which took place in Dubai. Look forward to more stories in the coming months; we are already looking forward to 2022. God bless you all. Amb. Elvis Iruh Editor-in-Chief

Her Excellency, Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow The First Lady of The Republic of The Gambia

H

er Excellency Mrs Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow is a philanthropist par excellence, the Chief Patron of the Women Enterprise Fund of The Gambia and the First Lady of The Republic. Over the past five years, she has emerged as a national treasure for the country, transforming and safeguarding the lives of Gambian Women, Children, the vulnerable and people with disabilities. In both the rural and urban communities, Her Excellency through her FaBB Foundation has dedicated her time and resources addressing the concerns of her people. Her many achievements include her boundless compassion at the peak of the Covid-19 global pandemic when she tirelessly distributed a Covid-19 relief package countrywide; providing rice, cooking oil, millet, sugar, detergents, hand sanitizers amongst other consumables to the vulnerable. Through the Women Enterprise Fund, she has worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare to strengthen the capacities of 10,000 women and girls owned Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the aim of increasing their income and providing livelihood skills. Her Excellency Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow has led her country through a case management system by raising awareness and sensitizing people on all forms of Gender-Based Violence. Through her collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare (MoGCSW), she has officially launched the national hotlines 1313 and 199 for Sexual and Gender-based violence and Children cases respectively. She also opened the shelter for victims of Gender Based Violence and provided sewing machines for the training of the victims to facilitate their reintegration into society. She supported the training of 45 women in honey processing and the use of honey and honey products to develop beauty products. She visited the shelter for children regularly, providing

financial support and playing equipment for the children. She has provided thirty-four scholarships to potential Gambian doctors to specialise in fertility, embryology, sexual and reproductive health, diabetes cardiovascular prevention and oncology. Her concern for health extended beyond scholarships to providing sanitary materials to two hundred Gambian communities, the Gambia Prisons Department, Tanka Tanka psychiatric hospital, 51 Quaranic Learning Centres, and several conventional schools to help students return safely to schools after several months of school closure due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Her support for education, especially that of the girl-child and the special needs children is great and worthy of emulation. As the slogan for education is to be all inclusive, no ‘Child left behind’ the 1st Lady is very much interested in the general welfare and development of the differently abled children and this includes the need to train Special Needs teachers in the education system to give special attention to those group of learners in our classrooms. Presently there is a single itinerant teacher responsible for a cluster of not less than 12 schools and the ideal situation is to have a teacher or two in every school to cater for not only the educational, but the psychological, and mental needs such children. As the chief Patroness of the Paediatric Unit of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, she constantly supports the Kangaroo Mother Care, the special New Born Unit, as well as first babies born on first January (New Year’s Day) every year. Included in her future plans is to establish a special hospital for babies and new born; as well as a special hospital for cancer prevention, treatment and care. We are proud to say that as First Lady of The Republic of The Gambia, Madame Barrow’s leadership has enriched the lives of many Gambians.

Dear Editor,

Where Is The Justice In Nigeria Under Buhari? By Reno Omokri “Channels Television granted an interview to Sheikh Gumi, in which Gumi repeated his lie that Christian soldiers were behind the killings of Fulani herders suspected of banditry. The National Broadcasting Commission did not punish Channels for that Gumi interview. Now, the Buhari regime want to punish Channels Television for their interview with Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue, in which he spoke the truth? Where is the justice? “ “ A Muslim cleric named Ustaz Abubakar Salihu had in a viral video last month threatened to kill Christians in retaliation for the Plateau killings. Nobody has even invited Ustaz Salihu for questioning. Yet, the Buhari regime persecutes Bishop Matthew Kukah for speaking the truth. “ “Where is the justice in Nigeria under Buhari? Or is it now a sin to be a Christian in Nigeria?” © Reno Omokri

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah on the paradox of the Nigerian society!

“Nigerian educational systems have surprising outcomes. The smartest students pass with First Class and get admitted to Medical and Engineering Schools. The Second Class students get MBAs and LLBs to manage the First Class students. The Third Class students enter politics and rule both the First and Second Class students. The Failures enter the Underworld of crime and control the politicians and businesses. And best of all, those who did not attend school become Prophets and Imams and everyone follows them. What a paradox of life. This can only happen in Nigeria where corruption is the order of the day.”

WELL SAID ..., BISHOP KUKAH www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

The UAE Red Crescent is a member of the world’s largest group of humanitarian non-governmental organisations – the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, which includes societies in 178 countries with almost a hundred million employees and volunteers. The organisation focuses on providing healthcare and disaster management in areas affected by warfare or natural disasters and promotes volunteering as a key humanitarian principle. Mohammed Al Zarooni seems to know so much about the UAE Red Crescent and talks with such conviction about it that it is hard to believe he joined the organisation few years ago. The UAE Red Crescent has 11 overseas branches - in Gaza and Jenin in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Thailand, Indonesia, Somalia, Yemen, Albania, Kosovo and Sudan. the number of volunteers. In 2002, a presidential decree turned the society into the UAE Red Crescent Authority of today, underlying the government’s commitment to humanitarian causes. The UAE Red Crescent is active within the country as well, providing help to needy people and families without discrimination. In 2003, the total cost of programs executed by the organisation throughout the UAE was over Dhs.47 million. This included providing financial support to over twelve thousand needy families, providing free medical assistance and supporting the educational requirements of needy students, caring for prisoners and supporting various activities carried out by the country’s punishment institutions. Orphans and disabled people are also among recipients of aid distributed by the UAE Red Crescent and so are poor Muslims, whom the organisation provides with the treasured chance to perform their Haj pilgrimage. The organisation is very active during the Ramadan and Eid, when it gives the needy the chance to break their fast and gives out clothes and family parcels. With so many ongoing projects, the UAE Red Crescent can accommodate volunteers of diverse backgrounds and interests and Al Zarooni is inviting everyone to volunteer and do their share of good. “I’d like to see more volunteers joining in,” he says.

ashas Group is a hospitality company operating out of Dubai, UAE. The company is owned by Natasha Sideris, the Founder and CEO. The group has 5 brands under its umbrella: Tashas, Le Parc by Tashas, Flamingo Room by Tashas, Avli by Tashas, Galaxy Bar.

Natasha Sideris -CEO & Founder, Tashas Group

Natasha Sideris is the Founder and CEO of Tashas Group and the maverick of the casual dining scene in South Africa and now in the UAE. 3rd generation in hospitality, Natasha grew up at the side of her father, a restaurateur, learning the business from a young age. Even though she studied Psychology at University, she returned to her true passion, hospitality. In 2005, after many years working in and owning franchised restaurants, she founded Tashas, filling a gap in the market for a casual dining concept where the interiors were beautiful, the food genuinely fresh, and the service second to none. From the moment she opened the second tashas, Natasha parted with the cookie-cutter franchising model and decided to make every tashas just a little bit different, providing guests with a surprising, yet delightful experience based on three principles: brilliant food, stunning environments, engagingly delivered. And it’s a recipe that worked. There are currently 15 tashas in South Africa and 5 in the UAE with another set to open in 2020. She is the mastermind, not only behind Tashas, but also Flamingo Room by tashas, Avli by tashas and Galaxy Bar, but she’s also notably humble, putting her success down to the team that makes up TTG. She’s a stickler for detail and a hound for exceptional quality. Natasha now resides in the UAE, where she oversees the

Oasis Africa supports children from Africa’s largest urban slum, Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera has no government services, with very little sanitation or clean water. Unemployment rates are high, resulting in most parents/caregivers being unable to afford education for their children. Oasis Africa focusses on providing access to quality education. We support both boys and girls equally, through offering High School and University Scholarships. A court just confirmed: To be Dutch is to be white By Sinan Çankaya

40

The Hague District Court recently ruled that ethnicity can be used to single out passengers for checks at Dutch airports. That is what Mpanzu Bamenga, a city councillor and academic from Eindhoven, The Netherlands, heard soon after arriving at the airport of his hometown following a short work visit to Italy in 2018. He quickly realized that he had been selected for an extra security check because he is a Black man. After all, he was a Dutch national arriving at a Dutch airport, holding a Dutch passport. It was clear that there was no obvious reason for him to be singled out like this – other than the colour of his skin. This was not Bamenga’s first experience of racial profiling in the Netherlands – this is, after all, not a rare experience for Dutch nationals from minority backgrounds. I myself have been pulled out of the passport control cue at the Schiphol Airport for a “routine” security check in the past. I was on my way to a conference in the United Kingdom, where I would give a lecture on; I am not making this up, racial profiling. When faced with such discrimination, we all want to scream: “Is this because of the colour of my skin, is this because you think I do not look Dutch enough?” but we

But after his experience in 2018, Bamenga decided to do something about it. He first lodged an official complaint. And later, with the backing of rights groups like Amnesty International, RADAR, Controle Alt Delete and PIPLNJCM, he brought a case against the Dutch government to end racial profiling. Marechaussee police force (Kmar), which is in charge of border security in the Netherlands, tried to legitimize its officer’s decision to single out Bamenga for special questioning by claiming that he had “matched a risk profile” because he walked quickly, was travelling on his own, was well dressed, and he looked “not Dutch”. On that day, Bamenga was a lone traveller in a tailored suit walking rapidly at the Eindhoven airport – in many ways; he was no different to thousands of other Joe Travellers passing through that airport every single day. But unlike them, Bamenga was selected for special questioning. The deciding factor, and there is no other way around it, was his socalled “non-Dutch appearance”. In Bamenga, the Dutch police saw not a Dutch professional coming home from a work trip, but a potential Nigerian trafficker. On September 22, The Hague District Court finally reached a verdict on Bamenga’s case. “Ethnicity does not have to be an objective indication of nationality, but it could be,” the judge ruled. Ethnicity cannot be the

only criteria for singling out passengers for extra checks, the court said, but it could certainly be one criterion among

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

others. With this ruling, the court has lumped together skin colour and nationality – it cemented the idea that to be Dutch is to be white. Of course, this was something racialized Dutch people already knew, but the court ruling made it official. The ruling is the legal, and seemingly sophisticated, stand-in for its uncritical and banal version: “Well, ‘we’ are white, and ‘they’ are Black, is it not so?” As a result of decades of migration and colonialism, thousands of people from different corners of the world – some voluntarily, some not – ended up in the Netherlands. And their presence in the country cracked the notion of “Dutchness as whiteness”. The post-colonial migration from the Dutch East Indies and the Moluccas, and later Suriname and the Dutch Antilles, the labour migration from Turkey and Morocco, and the more recent arrival of refugees from Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Congo and so on, shook up the whole idea that being Dutch equals being

white. Or so you would think. But, being “white” or “Black” are not objective indicators of anything. These racial classifications are political, not biological. What we are dealing with here is a colonial legacy. How Black does one have to be to be regularly pulled out of queues in Dutch airports? How white is white enough to not be routinely selected for “random” questioning? These questions are indeed uncomfortable and hard to answer. But what then, for goodness sake, does “Dutchlooking” mean? The court’s assumption that racism or discrimination can only occur if the security forces choose an individual for additional questioning solely or predominantly based on their racial or ethnic characteristics is also problematic for multiple reasons. The ruling gives the impression that there is no problem with racial profiling as long as ethnicity is used “in combination with” other criteria. Moreover, the practices of security forces are often messy and complex. When selecting someone for questioning, they likely rely on an amalgam of different criteria, including but not limited to ethnicity and race. In this context, it is almost impossible to determine what the “predominant” factor is behind an officer’s decision to single an individual out for additional security checks

at an airport, bus station or on the street. Therefore, the court’s decision does nothing to stop security forces from using ethnicity as the sole, or predominant, criteria when deciding who to question. The Kmar, for its part, claims that ethnicity does not play a role in its generalized risk profiles in the first place.

These profiles are composed based on complex statistical calculations, it says, and correspond to a wide range of developments, for example, in the field of migration. It argues that its profiles are composed based not on race, but neutral and quantifiable risk indicators, such as the individual in question’s airport of departure, their airport of arrival, the nature of their plane ticket (one-way or return), the age or gender of those travelling with them, and so on. Considered independently from each other, these indicators indeed seem neutral, but in combination, they clearly can become a proxy for ethnicity or race. And the court’s ruling on Bamenga’s case gives a carte blanche to security forces to continue using such seemingly neutral criteria to legitimize racial profiling. In the Bamenga case, the judge seemingly gave precedence to the alleged effectiveness of the stops above principles of non-discrimination. This was a major failure, as it is the responsibility of the courts to keep the excesses of security forces in check, overturn their problematic decisions and put an end to discriminatory practices. As far as I am concerned, we should rid the world of all forms of racialized thinking – including the uncritical embrace of it among progressives. But let’s first focus on the ingrained racialized thinking in our institutions. We cannot build a post-racial world while our security forces, leading institutions, and courts continue to casually lump together race, ethnicity and nationality. Bamenga was in Italy to give a lecture on the meaning of liberty. Perhaps Dutch courts and other institutions should spare a few hours to listen to what he has to say, to make sure that meaning is not lost in his own country. Zambia’s Chinese debt nearly twice official estimate, study finds

Z

ambia’s debt to Chinese public and private lenders is $6.6 billion, almost double the amount disclosed by the previous Zambian government, the China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) has estimated from an analysis of loan data. Copper-rich Zambia became Africa’s first coronavirus-era sovereign default last November and its ongoing debt restructuring has become a test case of Western multilateral efforts to get countries to disclose their full borrowings. The previous government, led by Edgar Lungu, said Zambia’s Chinese debts stood at $3.4 billion. But the estimate published by CARI on Tuesday chimes with comments from President Hakainde Hichilema, who took office last month, that the debt load is likely to be higher. The finance ministry said its official figures were “broadly consistent” with the CARI estimate, adding that the government’s reporting on public debt was accurate and transparent. “Key creditors and stakeholders, including the International Monetary Fund and advisers to the bondholders’ ad hoc committee have received more detailed data on the makeup of the public debt under each category under non-disclosure agreements,” it added in a statement. International creditors, with which the government is in talks, have complained that the lack of detail on Zambia’s China loans - which carry specific non-disclosure terms, has hindered the process of restructuring Zambia’s debts. “Given the complicated situation ... reaching consensus on burden-sharing is likely to prove exceptionally difficult,” CARI researchers Deborah Brautigam and Yinxuan Wang wrote. The $6.6 billion figure is based on data collected by CARI at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. It does not include penalties or interest arrears that continue to build up.

China is Africa’s largest creditor. It is part of the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), which is supported by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and has suspended debt payments to dozens of the world’s poorest countries. 42

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

But Washington in particular has urged China to provide more data to other creditors about its loans, noting that some Chinese entities have not participated fully in the DSSI. Tuesday’s study estimated that $7.77 billion in loans had been disbursed to Zambia and its state-owned enterprises by 18 major and minor Chinese banks or funds from 2000 to August 2021. Of those, Zambia has repaid at least $1.2 billion. The estimate does not change Zambia’s total debt load of $14.3 billion, the researchers said, but shows that the Lungu government “was not transparent about the heavy weight of Chinese financiers among its many external creditors”. Bwalya Ngandu, finance minister under Lungu, has said it is not true that Zambia’s debt numbers were understated. “We have never hidden any debt,” he said in a statement earlier this month. Asked about the new Chinese debt estimate, he did not immediately provide a response. The researchers found six instances in which Chinese lenders had cancelled debt owed by Zambia, for a total of $392 million.

Countering violent extremism at grassroot Africa continent has come a long way and has a long way to go. Independence in Africa come with merit and demerits. Among the demerits of the newly founded self rule was the founding fathers feel of entitlement, the kind that made the founding fathers run Africa countries in manner to suggest they had earned the right to do whatever they wanted. As a result political father heads created Africa godfathers who ran the

economy and public resources without caution. However that error has slowly faded away with new leadership taking form. In this new error, every woman, every youth, every child counts. Awareness which now recognizes the role of the different stake holders in African society is in realization, there is alot that women are now contributing in leadership. Often than not we are made to feel that the leaders on top are the real deal. However the structure of a society can be strong as her grassroot operation permits. The millions of projects and actions at grassroot level create the monument of a country. In the Kenyan society at grassroot level is a lady called Fatuma-the founder Engange Jamii Initiative. Fatuma Kamene Juma is currently the Director- Engage Jamii Initiatives a community based organization which focuses on connecting women with their children and youth throughout their lives in advocating for effective and conscious parenting in Countering Violent Extremism[CVE] and empowering women economically in CVE, thus empowering community to have stable family units and peaceful nation. Previously, she served as a Gender Officer. Fatuma holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Nairobi and has completed several trainings and professional courses including an Exchange Program to the USAthus an International 54

Visitors Leadership Program Alumni. She is an expert in Peace and Security programs. She is a Mentor and a trainer who empowers women and girls in different spheres of life. Our columnist Jimmie Nicks had a discussion with Fatuma and following is inlook into Fatuma and Engage Jamii Initiative. TV. Welcome to The Voice News Magazine Fatuma. Thankyou for having me TV. Engage Jamii Initiative is a noticeable CBO due to the impact it has had in Kenya communities, what is your story? Fatuma: I was orphaned at a tender age, as a result I grew up lacking parental guidance during adolescent stage, lack of school fees and enduring lots of challenges to complete high school education. Luckily I got school bursary through my previous School Principal Madam Florence Lihanda. Immediately after form four, I opted for early marriage with assumption of running away from worldly troubles, this led to early divorce due to unknowingly marrying a man who had already divorced 5 times. Due to my strong religious background, I picked myself up, got myself an office assistant job, and used my savings to go back to college, did several certificates and diploma courses due to lack of career guidance and later on at the age of 34yrs graduated with the Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Nairobi. TV. Is your experience as an orphan related to the birth of EJI Fatuma. Definately, I truly understand why girls are vulnerable and in dire need of parental love, guidance and support. I also

believe that most parents are hurting their children knowingly or unknowingly by not being there for them therefore they should be trained on conscious and effective parenting in overcoming societal challenges that are currently facing our children. Girls need mentorship to be able to cope up with the changing world that is full of technological exposure. Women need to be economically empowered to be able to

be financially stable since they carry the burden of their families when divorced, widowed and mostly when their husbands abscond parental responsibilities. Women need peace and security to thrive, this is because, when there is violence, women are forced to run with their children, at times they are raped due to their vulnerability during war. TV. Lets talk about EJI Fatuma. Engage Jamii Initiatives is a community based women led organization that bridges the gap between parents and the youth through various training that unites families. EJI was started in 2016, and with the generous support from the US Embassy Public Affairs Section in Nairobi, has managed to successfully train and mentor more than 100000 women and girls in Nairobi areas such as Pumwani, Kawangware, Kariobangi, Huruma, Mombasa areas like Kisauni and Likoni and Kilifi areas like Mnarani, Kiwandani, Mabirikani, Mtaani, Kwa Mwango, Marembo, Kibaoni, Kisumu Ndogo, Mambrui, Malindi, Magarini. In past we have had hundreds of community meetings and training but due to COVID-19 we have had to minimize the physical meetings and introduce online training. Example is four whatsapp groups that EJI is using to do training including Parenting for both parents aimed at discussing challenges and solutions in parenting, Religious group strictly for women for religious nourishment, Entrepreneurship for networking between sellers and buyers and Charity group for sadaqa when

various religious organization and hence pastors and imams can use such opportunities to preach tolerance and help their following to correlate well with other faith organizations. Failure to play key role on right teachings puts entire

community at a vulnerable state. Unlike churches who have more forums, mosques need to come up with supporting systems like hospitals, libraries, financial structures. TV. Has the government been supportive in dealing with issues radicalization? Fatuma. Initially we had alot of stigma surrounding radicalization. Parents of radicalized youths would often get harassed when such occurrences happened. But with more awareness there is now a realization that this parents are equally suffering especially having their kids involved in terror and worst dying in the process. Currently we are in constant working relationship with the local administration to create more awareness. TV. How can parents discern signs in their children behavior to counter radicalization Fatuma. Common traits of youths under radicalization can be noted through the following 1. If your child suddenly became religious 2. When the child begins to withdraw from family but easy with newly found groupings 3. If your child becomes Symantec to terror just over night TV. How do you support this programs Fatuma. EJI runs its programs through donor support, and now that you are asking about it, we are looking forward to more donor support in order to achieve our objective of empowering more women and girls. TV. Your parting shot Fatuma. Our children are what we are as patents, lets join in upbringing our children in the best way possible. By Nicholas Jimmy (Jimmie Nicks)

Although the Gambia is a much smaller country but we are ready to develop and expand the country for

international growth. We now have a President, President Adama Barrow who is working very hard to put the Gambia back to its rightful place in the League of Nations around the world. According to him, we are attracting global partners to come and join us to develop the country for the benefit of the people. His agreement with the Dubai businessman would create more job opportunities for the people of The Gambia, it will create more job opportunities for the people of the Gambia, increase our GDP, open more opportunities for 56

small business owners in the Gambia. The people of Dubai as well as the royal family of Dubai really appreciate the people of the Gambia; it’s a pleasure and honor as a Gambian to establish relationship between the two countries.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the government and people of Dubai for their support and friendship, I will assure them of warm welcoming in the Gambia, and it will increase our tourism and businesses industries. May Allah continue to bless the people of the Gambia, he prayed.

COLUMN YOUNG, AFRICAN AND

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE! By Eva Nakto By Eva Nakato

Many Western media houses and their affiliates have continuously been on the spotlight for painting the African continent as one full of problems, diseases and corruption. The youth have not been spared either since they form majority of the total population. There has always been reports of how the young people are wallowing in poverty, their constant involvement in crime and violence, drug abuse, early marriage of the girl child and the subsequent domestic violence stories, amongst others. Whereas the aforementioned scenarios might be common, there are nevertheless millions of other young people on the continent living exemplary lives and being the forces to reckon with. These youths have done phenomenal work to bring about change in their respective communities and countries. They did not wait on their governments or outsiders to run to their aid nor did they wait for others to speak on their behalf. They also did not wait until they had assumed ‘big’ positions in governmental agencies before they could attempt to tackle the most pressing issues around them and their surroundings. They simply decided to be the change themselves. In 2010 at the age of 26, Jamila Abbas, a Kenyan Software Engineer and Computer scientist decided to join forces with her friends in order to do something about the plight of Kenyan small-scale farmers through the use of technology. Together, they founded MFarm Kenya Limited, an internet-based organization that helps farmers find the best farm implements, seeds, access to weather reports and market information. The outcome of this innovation was unimaginable as hundreds of thousands of farmers immensely benefited from it. Douglas Smith, a 21-year-old Ugandan, is the CEO of Sportrise Uganda. The company manufactures soccer balls directly from plastic waste. They do this to help influence a social change for disadvantaged children and youths through playing football to help take their minds off distractive engagements and instead occupy their time with a meaningful and healthy activity. In Nigeria, Godwin Josiah and his cousins commonly known as ‘Critics’, broke the internet when they went viral for shooting a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) movie with just a smartphone. They

spent sleepless nights on YouTube watching tutorials on how to make visual effects. After saving some little money, they bought a green cloth in order to achieve the green screen effect. They then used their old and broken equipment to shoot their first project, a short sci-fi movie. Godwin maintained that their intention was to not go viral but to let the world know that kids like them could do something different. They have since then shot a number of awesome movies even with the limited equipment at their disposal. Moving on to Burundi, Dieudonne Nahimana’s vision for a national development arose after his father and other family members were brutally murdered in cold blood due to the tragic devastating war in Burundi in 1993. He was consequently unable to complete his education and hence ended up sleeping on the streets as his new home and also as a way of survival. Uncertain about his future, young Dieudonne was left with nothing but hope, perseverance and a vision. On a fateful Christmas Eve, he decided to share his meal with fellow street children. This brought a glow on their faces stirring up a vision within him. This act of kindness led to the birth of ‘New Generation Burundi’, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing street connected children and cultivating them into a new generation of servant leaders. Nahimana’s ability to equip, inspire and mobilize the youth has brought a tremendous healing, hope and dignity to thousands of youths and children in Burundi. Now, the aforementioned youths are not the only ones bringing about change in their respective communities on the African continent. We could actually spend several weeks mentioning all of them. Just like these change makers, there is so much that youths can put on the table in this day and era if given the chance to showcase their ability. We are neither too young or too old, too rich or too poor to make a difference in this world. We all can collectively and effectively make the world a much better place not only for ourselves, but also for the generations to come. The ultimate goal is to not leave anyone behind. Adios!

Fighting poverty not the poor!

W

e had our first son when we recently moved to Belgium. By the time our second son was on his way, we had moved to Ostend from Bredene. When we approached our social worker about birth allowance, he told us bluntly that we were not eligible. Why? I asked curiously. Well, it’s for permanent residents, he told us. I told him that was strange, because in Bredene we had it all arranged by our social worker. And we had not even lived in Belgium for a year. “That’s Bredene, Mr. Nweke” he sounded formal and stern. “In Ostend, nonpermanent residents are not entitled to a birth premium” I told him I disagreed and wanted to formally dispute it... Less than a week later, our social worker invited us back and had our birth premium paid. I told him that I knew a few others in our situation who had been denied their rights. I wondered how he was going to fix the anomaly. He looked me straight in the eyes and sat down. Closing his office door, he took me through what I now recognize as my first introduction to the Belgian culture of “political compromise”. Here was the deal: If I could let go of those who had been denied their rights in the past, he would make sure everyone gets their birth premium in the future. That was in 1996. Fast forward to 10 years later, in the 2006 2012 legislature when I became a councillor for the Green Party at the Council for Social Welfare (OCMW/ CPAS). There were other examples of the denial of citizens’ rights by the same OCMW that should protect their rights. The OCMW council would knowingly reject the rights of citizens to social assistance. The reasoning or strategy was that they will not know their rights and will not go to court. Even when they went to court, the verdict will take some time. Some of those involved would have left the country by then. For those who may still be around, it is a strong message that the OCMW is not Santa Claus. These are bits and pieces of disgusting practices that had won Ostend the crown of poverty capital of Flanders over the years; especially when it comes to child poverty. The Green party has always raised these dehumanizing practices from the opposition up to 2018. With limited success! Now in the local coalition

58

ruling government, what should stop us from dismantling the dehumanization? Isn’t it poverty that must be fought, not the poor? The poor have been hit hardest by the Coronavirus pandemic. And so are the struggling small business owners! In the Special Committee for Social Services (BCSD), we are doing everything we can to ensure that the broad Corona support for Ostend residents who are having a hard time ends up with the right people. This way we encourage people who can no longer pay their invoices. We deploy social workers to show those who need it the way to the Social House. In short, we want to provide material, social, medical, medico-social or psychological help to people who can no longer afford their daily expenses or expenses related to medical care due to the Corona crisis. Files are analyzed individually. By way of example: certain employees who have lost part of their income or who are faced with extra debts, employees in the sub-economic sector, employees working part-time - with a focus on single-parent families, job students, certain self-employed, people with disabilities, . .. are recognized as the needy. According to a recent council release, the interventions specifically cover the following: 1. Assistance with housing. Including the costs with the exception of the rental deposit. 2. Energy assistance. Energy consumption, including social and budgetary guidance or other support. 3. Psychosocial help. Reimbursing the costs of professionals recognized for the treatment of intimate partner violence, anxiety and psychiatric problems. 4. Health assistance. Interventions in hospital bills, medicines, ... and the purchase of mouth masks, gels and gloves. 5. Help with digital accessibility. Digital support to promote online steps, social contacts and school support in particular. 6. Financial help. Unpaid invoices as a result of a decrease in income. 7. Basic needs. Interventions in transport costs, the purchase of clothing, the purchase of medical glasses, ... 8. Help for the families in difficulty. In the context of the fight against child poverty. Through its actions and negligence, the OCMW Ostend has built up generations of poor over the years. Worse,

those who were in danger of falling into the poverty spiral were shortsightedly ignored. The last OCMW board led by Vanessa Vens played a fair but insufficient active catch-up. The current Council, led by mayor Bart Tommelein and BCSD chairman, Natacha Waldemann, have taken the bull by the horns. They provide leadership and direction. And that’s important. Decisions within the council committee are largely taken by consensus. Decisions are not

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mboma admits 400m Olympic ban was “a very bad experience” Namibia’s Olympic silver medalist Christine Mboma and her compatriot Beatrice Masilingi have spoken about their bans from the 400-metre event at Tokyo 2020, describing it as “a very bad experience”, “quite disturbing” and “hard to understand.” At the start of July, a World Athletics assessment found they had differences in sexual development (DSD) and high natural levels of testosterone and, under its rules, must take drugs to reduce their naturally-occurring testosterone for women’s events from 400m to a mile. This prevented the pair from competing in their preferred 400m event at their maiden Olympics. Earlier in the year, Mboma broke the under-20 world record for the distance in 48.54sec, while Masilingi recorded a season’s best of 49.53. Both athletes were able to compete in the 200m at Tokyo 2020, with Mboma setting another under-20 world record of 21.81 to win silver - Namibia’s first Olympic medal since Atlanta 1996. Masilingi recorded a personal best of 22.28 to finish sixth. As reported by Namibian newspaper New Era, the pair has spoken for the first time over the controversy. Masilingi said during the programme titled “Namibian athletes reflect on their journey to success”, which was streamed live by the country’s information ministry, the ban from the 400m was a major source of frustration, and that

driven by the ideological right versus the left, but by right versus wrong. If we really fight poverty, Ostend will win. The high poverty level has taken time to build. Logically it will take some time to eradicate too. But two years after the start of this legislature, we can honestly say that we have made a good start. And independent analyses and statistical data have confirmed the fact. By Collins NWEKE Councillor Special Committee for Social Services | Ostend City Council

focusing on the 200m required very different preparations at short notice. “It was quite disturbing at the beginning; it was hard to understand - but as time went on, we had no choice but to rather focus on the positive side of things,” Masilingi commented. “So, we decided to turn our focus and attention to the 200m and started working on it. “We had to adjust quickly; it demanded that we mentally and physically switch our thoughts very fast ahead of the Olympics. “We literally had to change how we do things on the track.” Mboma echoed Masilingi’s sentiments, explaining the impact the decision had on their training for the Games. “Very disappointed,” Mboma admitted. “It was bad news because our focus was always on the 400m and we had been training for the 400m all along. “But now, you are told you can’t run 400m. “We were not even sure if we could really do well in the 200m, but we had no choice. “It was a very bad experience. “But we had talks with our coach and we decided to do the 200m. “Getting out of the starting blocks during training for the 200m was a bit of a problem - but if you believe in yourself, everything is possible.” Since Tokyo 2020, Mboma won the women’s 200m at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, with Masilingi a silver medalist in the 100m and 200m. Mboma has also triumphed in two Diamond League events in Brussels and Zürich and two World Athletics Continental Tour Gold events in Zagreb and Nairobi in the 200m. First Lady of Sierra Leone to become the new face champion of the United Nation’s Educational Plus Program

H

is Excellency Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio and the First Lady, Madam Fatima Maada Bio held a closed-door meeting on the invitation of the Executive Director of UNAIDS last month during their attendance of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City, U.S.A. The Executive Director of UNAIDS, Madam Winnie Byanyima expressed her delight in meeting with the President and First Lady of Sierra Leone, whose work she has been following individually and humbled to be discussing the way forward for girls and education in the African continent,

as that’s one of the key priorities of the United Nations. Underscoring the importance of her proposal to have the First Lady Fatima Maada Bio become the new face of the United Nation’s Education Plus Initiative, she noted that the initiative is geared towards allowing girls go through formal education and further teach them about sex education and orientation which she believes will ultimately reduce the risk of them contacting HIV/Aids. Madam Winnie gave a highlight of the activities of the

62

First Lady she has been following and how amplified and authentic her voice has been in the protection and empowerment of girls in Sierra Leone, as she continues to impact and influence other nations to replicate what she does in her countries. According to the Executive Director, she was overwhelmed with the speech delivered by President Julius Maada Bio at the United Nations general assembly, specifically how passionately he spoke about girls’ right to education and inclusivity in his human capital development agenda and how he spoke with clear first hand evidence of the progress his government continue to make in that direction. In her concluding statement, she confirmed how impressed she was left, after First Lady spoke passionately, with great knowledge on sexual violence and issues affecting adolescents in the African continent, adding that her voice is authentic and the UNAIDS team would love to work with her as a fearless First Lady using her voice and platform to address issues of inequalities affecting girls. Responding to the Executive Director, His Excellency

Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada expressed his sentiment on behalf of himself and the First Lady, while ascertaining the invitation and offer proposed to the First Lady is timely and quite prudent, giving the clear evidence of the work the she does in Sierra Leone and how she has succeeded in breaking the societal taboo of not talking to girls about sex education and reporting their abusers in cases of rape and sexual penetration. H.E disclosed that the First Lady deals with the advocacy

aspect of narrowing the inequality gaps through the Hands Off Our Girls campaign, while his government works on

the right policies and implementation to give girls an equal chance to be educated and empowered. Highlighting some of the key achievements of his government, President Bio mentioned the One Stop Shop centers for rape victims, the special sexual offences court

for rape cases, the exceptional advocacy work of the HOOG campaign by the First Lady and the overturned of the ban on pregnant girls accessing school after giving birth, stating that statistics have shown an exponential progress on the results from girls returnees in schools and a much higher retention of girls due to the intervention of the First Lady’s Free Sanitary Pad initiative, as she established herself with the girls so much that they feel confident to open up and share their everyday realities with her. President Bio pledged his government’s commitment to work with the UNAIDS agenda, while noting that Madam First Lady’s involvement will be pivotal in achieving great success of the initiative, due to her resounding, authentic and captivating voice that speaks to the hearts of many. First Lady warmly appreciated the reception of Madam Winnie, while noting that her advocacy to ensure every girl has equal right and access to education is stem from her personal ordeal, and her passionate campaign has garner lots of attention from the country’s capital city to the last village and town in Sierra Leone. She mentioned the commitment of Paramount Chief, religious leaders, community leaders, parents, girls’ right movements and civil society activists, whom she continues to work with to create more impact. Madam Fatima pledged her commitment to work with UNAIDS, as their concerns are genuine and should allow radical inclusion like what president Bio is doing in Sierra Leone, adding that her office works mainly to prevent girls from not getting pregnant and have an equal and fair opportunity to stay in school like their male colleagues. In her concluding statement, First Lady stated that, with the way the world is transiting, girls most times prefer to seek answers concerning their sexualities or its related components from outside the home, due to lack of adequate parental communication on sex education and personal hygiene, hence the need to work aggressively in eradicating such myth from society, when it has to do with sex education for girls. Dr. Barryl Biekman addresses UN General Assembly

O

n September 19th, 2021, the President of UN General Assembly allowed Dr. Barryl Biekman as Keynote Speaker to address the Assembly in New York during the UN World Conference Against Racism which marked the 20year anniversary. Dr. Barryl Biekman spoke during the opening session of United Nation’s High-level meeting per its resolution 75/237, the General Assembly held this one-day high-level meeting to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA), at the level of Heads of State and Government, on the theme “Reparations, racial justice and equality for people of African descent”. Dr. Biekman, an African-Surinamese from the Netherlands, is highly recognized in the NGO and intergovernmental communities for her advocacy and bringing worldwide attention to the DDPA. Exemplary to this, she also addressed the formal launching of the International Decade for People of African Descent at the UN General Assembly in 2014. Dr. Barryl Biekman is the Human Rights Commissioner of Tiye International, Council Member of ENGOCCAR (European-Wide NGO Consultative Council on Afrikan

Reparations / Europe, UK), a Member of the Global Pan African Coalition for the DDPA, and former Member of the Technical Working Groups for the development of the African Union African Diaspora Sixth Region Declaration of 2012. She also Chairs the National Monument Dutch Slavery Past, and led amongst hundreds of Pan-Africanists and activists, the preparation processes of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action as an NGO liaison in the Dutch government delegation in South Africa, 2001. Among her many achievements and expert knowledge, which bridge understandings between the empowerment of women and girls, gender equity, human rights and civilization dialogue, Dr. Biekman is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Global African Women’s Day Award for her outstanding contributions on increasing the visibility of the DDPA. Among the speakers at the historic opening session are; President of the General Assembly, United Nations Secretary-General, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Head of State of South Africa and invited members from civil society. Excerpts from her statement to the National Assembly at the UN.

Dr. Biekman addresses a High level meeting to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and programme of Action. ‘Reparations, racial justice and equality for people of African descent “

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the civil society friends from international NGOs in particular those members of the Global Pan African Coalition on Durban plus 20 including the December 12th movement who campaigned for the decision to be taken to hold the 3rd World Conference Against racism. Mr President, My heart cries And I would like to demonstrate this by using the expression “Truth has the

Mr. President, Excellences, Distinguished guests Greetings, I feel much honored to have been selected to deliver the keynote address on behalf of civil society when the United Nations and all people committed to the elimination of racism are proudly commemorating the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the landmark Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. For me personally it was one of the greatest events in my life to be part of the adoption 20 years ago of the DDPA in Durban in a spirit of solidarity and which gave voice to and protected the rights of all victims of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms. People of African descent no doubt treasure the DDPA most as our ordeal was recognized as the first victims group and the transatlantic slave trade and slavery was recognized as a crime against humanity. The DDPA is a peoples document based on a thorough preparatory process and broad participation in the preparatory committee meetings. The 20th anniversary of its adoption indeed deserves to be commemorated. 64

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

inherent power to produce the promised effect”. This is to emphasize that we can only be successful in the fight

against all forms of multiple racism if we do what we have promised. To defend and promote the fully implementation of the DDPA which is the strongest universal document of the United Nations’ programs to realize the rights of all victims of racism in intersectional perspective including Afrophobia, racial discrimination, and reparatory, restorative and climate justice. Because of the structurally persistent negative campaign to defame and undermine the DDPA and its implementation as the DDPA in no way shows that it proclaims racism in particular anti-Semitism. This structural undermining of the DDPA is a blow in the face of all those who campaigned for the holding of the 3rd World Conference against Racism (WCAR) by ensuring the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action through a broad-based democratic process. Without the DDPA we would not have been as close as we are today in having a global platform positioned to recognize the unfulfilled rights of Africans and People of African Descent at the United Nations and global society. But our position is crystal clear, we will not accept any denial of the DDPA in the name of People of African Descent neither shall we settle for anything less than our birth right and our human rights. Mr. President While we are assembling to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of a great UN Programme we cannot be silent on the undermining and defamation of the DDPA that has taken place during the past 20 years and now escalated to the extreme. We wonder why no senior official of the United Nations has stood up and spoken out against the disinformation and false propaganda against the DDPA that has preceded the anniversary and now caused the absence of different countries, including mine, from the

commemoration. We wonder how many lives could have been saved if the UN General Assembly resolutions on DDPA information and outreach programme had been implemented and the DDPA been known in its content to people everywhere. Mr. President, I close by saying that my heart is crying but my heart is smiling too because of the importance of paragraph 1. of the Political Declaration whereby the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action and the outcome document of the Durban Review Conference, adopted in 2009, as well as the Political Declaration of the tenth years anniversary of its adoption, has been reaffirmed. We do think however that a special paragraph should be devoted to ‘Reparations’ as it is already mentioned in the DDPA. The very heart, soul, spirit and the essence of the WCAR and the DDPA is the demand for Reparations. Reparations is a very simply payment for a debt that is owed for crimes against humanity which were committed and, in various degrees and forms, have continued into the 21st century. The DDPA embodies the demand of the masses of African people past and present. 20 years after Durban we will continue to fight. The DDPA will not be disappeared. Reparations will be received. As we said in 2001: THEY STOLE US! THEY SOLD US! THEY OWE US! REPARATIONS NOW! I thank you for your attention

An economy calamity: Africa faces years of post Covid instability

By Bram Posthumus

Damage from pandemic could quash ambitions, exacerbate

tensions and deepen repression in part of the continent. “In the Sahel, the economic impact of the pandemic has further weakened administrations that were already struggling to find resources for security forces, and has aggravated tensions between communities that have helped Islamic extremists make inroads in recent years. Across the region, as elsewhere on the continent, trade routes have been blocked, investments abandoned, and the flow of the remittances from overseas workers and the diaspora on which millions depend for everything from school fees to 66

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

food has been significantly reduced. Overseas aid is also likely to be reduced. Local and national elections have been postponed due to the virus, raising tensions and causing instability.” Oh dear, this is looking grim. It is almost universally… er, how do I put this politely…massively exaggerated? Not as close to the truth as it hopes to be? Distorted? Yup. All of the above. Let’s have a look, then. One: the violence. The impact of the pandemic in the areas where the fighting is happening is…nil. Sure, there has been more police repression in the cities as a result of Covid measures being introduced but villages do not get attacked because there is a pandemic but because the State is absent. To the best of my knowledge, none of the major cities have seen terorist attacks since 2016, I’d say, with the last major one on the coast. And these tensions predate the pandemic by half a decade or longer. Besides, it is becoming clearer that a lot of what the villagers suffer is the result of ordinary banditry, nothing to do with Islamic extremism. Jihadists are absolutely a factor and a presence and they have an uncanny aptitude to home in, laser-like, onto existing tensions and exploiting them. Of that, there is no doubt but the impact and influence of ‘the fools of god’, as they are known here, must not be exaggerated. And it must certainly not be reduced to the only story to be told about the Sahel, as far too many media do. Two: trade. Sure, the trade routes may have been hampered because the borders have been closed but they were never blocked. The coastal countries that closed their borders to the landlocked Sahel made it clear that this would not affect vital supplies like food and medicine. This is why there was never an empty shelve in any shop or supermarket. To see that you must go to Brexit Britain. Trade may have been reduced in some areas as it was made difficult for traders to transport their wares in person. But they took to using tried and tested smuggling routes to get their stuff from one place to another. Three: have elections been postponed? Not to my knowledge… Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea (not in the Sahel, I agree) held highly controversial elections last year. Niger

elected a new president and in Bukina Faso we wil not have elections because none have been scheduled. The two exeptions are Chad and Mali. This is because there were two coups (Mali) and a (mind you: just re-elected!!!) president was killed in battle and then replaced by his son (Chad), another well-established tradition although sometimes the son is so deeply detested that the people put a stop to it, as they did in Senegal in 2012 and arguably in Mali last year. Investments, remittances and aid have indeed been significantly reduced. But this is the effect of measures taken in countries that have been much worse affected by the pandemic than has the continent of Africa, exceptions duly noted. And here also we must be precise. The issue of remittances will have had the largest impact by a country mile. Family members sending money back home keep entire towns alive and thriving, from Louga in Senegal to Kayes in Mali and the many villages across this vast region. As for investments, one should be told where these were supposed to go, so we can assess the impact. For

instance, a lot of investment in Mali and Burkina Faso goes into mining, which tends to have a detrimental effect on the environment and the surrounding communities, while the

employment it creates is negligible. And regarding aid… Suffice here to repeat, once again, that were it to stop today hardly anyone here would notice, with the exception of the well-heeled but tiny middle class this industry has spawned. You would see a few fewer FourWheelDrives out on the

streets and the roads but I am sure people will quickly find better things to do with their time than sit in endless workshops that cost the earth and achieve nothing. In a famous TED talk, the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – and The Guardian worships the ground she walks on – warned against what she termed “the single story”, gross simplifications of complex places and peoples. Perhaps the Guardian could heed her advice and stop pontificating about an entire continent in pieces like these, just like we are currently being spared the dreadful spectre of writers poducing 300 to 700 page bricks about this continent. And to the best of my knowledge this is only done to “Africa”. Why is that? Someone produce a 700-word paper on that, please.

What next for Anthony Joshua after losing to Usyk?

O

leksandr Usyk ended Anthony Joshua’s second reign as world heavyweight champion last month with a unanimous points win in just his third fight since stepping up from the cruiserweight division. Usyk became the third man, after Evander Holyfield and David Haye, to win world titles at cruiserweight then heavyweight. Six years after Wladimir Klitschko’s long heavyweight reign ended, Ukraine has another world boxing champion in boxing’s marquee division. Anthony Joshua could not cope with Usyk’s superior reflexes and punching power, especially off his left, and ended the fight slumped on the ropes after a flurry of punches by the mandatory challenger to his WBO belt. Usyk also took Joshua’s WBA and IBF titles although Joshua has a rematch clause in the deal but many boxing experts are advising him to rush into using the clause to call or a rematch. He needs to study the fight again and know what he did wrong and prepare himself psychologically for another big fight.

Anthony Joshua’s resounding defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk not only saw him lose his world titles but also his hopes of a fight with Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder. There has been much talk in the last couple of years about a possible FuryJoshua fight, but after surrendering his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles in a loss by unanimous decision, that much-desired contest seems unlikely and may never happen. With only his own belts on the line, Fury is thought to have lost interest in facing AJ. The two Brits have dominated the division in recent times but after AJ’s defeat, the landscape has been changed drastically and fans may not get their dream battle. The division could continue to be shaken up as well as Fury faces the US fighter Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas on October 9. Whoever wins the fight would have his eyes on Usyk who is the new kid on the block. The bout will be round three in the pair’s trilogy after they drew in 2018 and then Fury won in 2020 to claim the WBC belt. For Joshua, meanwhile, the question is where does he go from here now he appears to have been pushed to one side on the heavyweight scene. Only time would tell, AJ has cornered himself and he needs to wait for the outcome of other boxers who are in the driving seat now.
