Employee faces charges in Post Office theft

Severns

Guilty plea nets 50 years A Drasco man will be spending the next 50 years in prison after pleading guilty Friday to first-degree murder. Andrew J. Severns, 47, pleaded guilty in Van Buren County Circuit Court on Feb. 10 in the February 2016 slaying of Jonas Donahue. Severns told Van Buren County sheriff's deputies investigating the slaying in Shirley that he shot Donahue multiple times with a .22 caliber rifle, according to court documents. Severns said he had been thinking about killing Donahue for a couple of years. Severns also told deputies he drove Donahue from Cleburne County to Van Buren County because he preferred to be incarcerated in Van Buren County, the documents show. Severns was sentenced Friday as a habitual criminal, having been previously convicted of sexual assault in the second degree and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His sentence was 600 months; according to prison intake papers, his release date is Feb. 14, 2066.

A call to authorities about an armed robbery at the Fairfield Bay Post Office wasn't what it first appeared to be, according to authorities. On Saturday, February 11, 2017, Fairfield Bay Police received a report that an armed man had entered the Post Office just as it was opening and had re-

strained the on-duty employee. It was reported that the man had stolen numerous money orders and cash. Investigators from the Fairfield Bay Police Department, the Arkansas State Police and the United States Postal Inspector’s Division immediately began investigating. The investiga-

tion revealed that no armed robbery took place, but instead, the report was an attempt to mislead authorities as to the true nature of the theft, according to a statement from Fairfield Bay Police. Information and evidence led to the recovery of most of the money orders, as well as the specialized machinery used

to imprint the money orders. Stolen cash and stamps were also recovered. The total amount of stolen items is listed as approximately $16,000. Two people, Russell Clint Basinger, 32, and Kristi Holliday, 32, both of Fairfield Bay, were identified as being part of the theft and both will have felo-

ny charges pending in federal court, according to the police statement. Holliday has apparently posted an apology and confession on Facebook. In the posting, she calls her actions a "dumb mistake," and blames an addiction. She says she is prepared to deal with the consequences.

Suspect caught in Oklahoma Law enforcement agencies are investigating a possible link between stolen vehicles and store breakins. On the evening of Feb. 6, a silver Dodge pickup was reported stolen from the Van Buren County Road Department yard. Later that evening, Conway County deputies spotted the pickup and began pursuing it. They lost sight of it, but it was reported seen again

There currently is a burn ban in effect for Van Buren County.

Bill increase

Many of the sanitation companies in the county are raising their rates, citing an increase in cost to them. Solid Waste director Craig Fisher confirms that this is the final year of an increase the county has been paying since January 2015 to the Morrilton landfill. The increase has been 10 percent per year. Sanitation com-

Van Buren County deputies located the vehicle traveling east on Highway 9 and began to chase it on County Line Road in Van Buren County. After a short pursuit, deputies reported the vehicle stopped in

the middle of County Line Road and the driver fled into the woods. A search for the driver of the vehicle included Van Buren and Conway County deputies, Arkansas State Police, the Clinton Police Department, Arkansas Game and Fish, and Arkansas Department of Correction K-9 tracking unit. The

vehicle was recovered but scent was lost and the suspect eluded the searchers. It was later reported that a red dually pickup truck was stolen near the scene of the search later that night. On Sunday, Feb. 12, Oklahoma City law enforcement contacted the Van Buren County sheriff's

lion. The state Health Department ordered several years ago that the Clinton Water system do something to clean up its water. The clarifier was the city's solution. Hink also reported

office that they had arrested Jimmy Joe Moses, 31, the suspect in the case. They also recovered the red pickup. Moses is currently being held in Oklahoma awaiting an extradition hearing back to Arkansas. It is believed, according to the news release, that the suspect also broke into a store in Cleveland and possibly Lowder General Store in Scotland. The glass door

at the Cleveland store was smashed in around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, and according to an employee at the store, cigarettes and some rolls of quarters were taken. Just a few minutes later, around 2 a.m., Lowder's glass door was smashed and the store was burglarized. Owner James Lowder said cigarettes were taken there, too. He has run the store since

1993 and said this is the second time it has been burglarized. The first time was about 10 years ago; that time the door was pried open. This time, glass was scattered about 20 feet into the store, he said. Law enforcement searched for the driver of the stolen Dodge for several hours Tuesday, Feb. 7. The owner of the property in Bee Branch where the search was con-

centrated told The Voice Friday that law enforcement officers were all over his property, then informed him about 10 p.m. that they believed the suspect was gone. Scott Jennette said shortly after authorities left, he found a pile of items from one of his shops just outside the shop door. Jennette, whose buildings were burglarized in December 2016, said he thinks whoever was

running from authorities was planning to return to his property and take the items.

that all the Water Department's bills for the month have been paid and the department "still didn't borrow any money." Also at the meeting, the council, at the request of Mayor Richard McCormac, unanimously approved Alex Kienlin for the Airport Commission. Kienlin

works for the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, the Van Buren County Democrat in Clinton and Dawson Aircraft Salvage in Clinton. He lives in Conway (Faulkner County). At Thursday's meeting, the council also tabled an ordinance titled Prohibiting Trafficking in Ani-

mals. It would ban the "selling, trading, bartering, giving away, otherwise trafficking or attempting to (do) so, of canines or felines of any age, other than at a private residence owned by the one engaged in such actions or at a licensed business owned by the one engaged in such ac-

tions." The ordinance would specifically exclude Mutt-i-gree and the operator of the animal shelter and/or SNYP from the ban. Further, it would allow an individual to transfer a "single animal (no more than one) to the City Police Station to effect a transfer." Councilor Sam

Ward said he would prefer the ordinance be decided upon when the full council is present. Timothy Barnes was not at Thursday's meeting. In closing comments, McCormac said C.G. Bolden Day would be held Feb. 21 with speakers at the Clinton School auditorium.

According to the report, the driver missed Willougby by inches, and Willoughby turned his vehicle around and pursued the suspect north on Highway 65. He said the vehicle was swerving in and out of traffic and driving with no headlights on. Garden Club tours Owl Ridge Farms

Thirty goats live at Owl Ridge Farms. Story and photos by Marguerite Dory

Sixteen members drove Tuesday, Feb. 7, to Jan Ham’s Owl Ridge Farms near Greers Ferry to learn about her very popular handmade luxury soap-making process and tour the facilities and production site. Jan explained the

many hours it takes her daily to care for her 13 females and 17 kids that have been born in the last few weeks. Besides personally delivering and hand feeding the kids, she has to milk, feed , move and doctor. Once her chores and kidding are done, she’s back to the soap room. It’s hard to believe one woman can do so much in a day, but she loves every minute of it. Her love and devotion shows as she names each goat and kid and describes them. Jan’s Owl Ridge Farm was selected by The Arkansas Times and First Security Bank for the 2016 Women Entrepreneurs Edition. Upon visiting her farm, we all agreed it was a well deserved honor.

Fred Hilsenrath was part of the group that toured Owl Ridge Farms.

Here is it February and we are having beautiful warm weather. Praise the Lord! Phillip Ellis is the new VBCAP board president Ed Wood is the new vice president, and Donna McAllister is the secretary. Please give them your support. They have a lot of knowledge about the program. I took several pictures of our seniors for The Voice Valentine edition. We have some goo-looking seniors. Older is better! Let me know if there is something special you want me to write about. I love our seniors. You are all special!

Calla Linn visited her cousin Bobby and Shirlene Ward of Holley Mountain on Sunday. Last Sunday was my 72nd birthday, so Sunday afternoon I just took a nap instead of making calls. I just took my birthday calls and enjoyed the beautiful blooming plant sent to me by Rosetta Sanders. The last thing I expected was for someone to send me flowers for my birthday, that was a huge surprise. Thelma Murray wants to speak

to the collectors of road and street signs in Van Buren County: When your family has an emergency whether it is a stroke, a heart attack, a lost child in the woods, you want help as soon as possible. What if a collector has taken your road or street sign? If a person dies because help could not find the location, it is my opinion that the collector has committed murder. So, think about finding yourself a new hobby. Those signs cost the county a lot of money. And they could save a life.

BREEDING AGE BULLS

Jeff Burgess Crabtree

I was in the Little Rock area last week and saw a flower bed with numerous daffodils in bloom. In our area daffodil flower buds are swelling but no reports of actual blooms yet, but it will be starting soon. While on a night walk last week, hoping to see the eclipse of the full moon, I wondered what Native Americans might have named the February moon. Many cultures give distinct names to each full moon during the year. Turns out the most common name was "snow moon." Doesn't seem to apply much here for us this year. Another name used was "hunger moon" due to harsh weather conditions made hunting difficult. I heard some hunters say a little more cold here would have helped the hunting. And why are there so many robins hanging around the county right now? According to birdsouce.com, "Food availability probably is the major factor influencing the number of American Robins that overwin-

ter in an area." So I guess we have what they want to eat here. If you have info about the greater Crabtree and 16 West community call or text Jeff Burgess 745-1249.

The following is a report from our Scotland Fire department: The Independent Order of Odd Fellows Aaron Lodge No. 4 held their 9th Annual Emergency Responders Dinner Saturday Night Feb. 4th at the Clinton School cafeteria with 150-175 people in attendance. Kathy Felton was given a 20+ years of service award. Sheriff Bradley gave memorials for Arkansas fallen policemen. Judge Roger Hooper and Mayor Paul Wellenberger of Fairfield Bay each spoke of the many hours of volunteer service that our First Responders, EMT’s, Firemen, Rescue Squad and Law Enforcement give to our county each year. Brian Tatum, past president, gave special recognition awards to charter members of the Rescue Squad. They are in their 30th year of service to the county. He gave a history of the rescue squad and the many types of rescues they are trained and equipped to respond to. OES officer Jeana Williams gave an award to Brian Tatum for his hard work to make the VBC Rescue Squad recognized statewide. “His response that it was possible through team-work.” Twenty or more business’s sponsored the dinner. Lowder’s General Store on Highway 95 west in Scotland was vandalized Tuesday morning. Someone kicked the glass door in and stole cigarettes. Church got its start with children’s ministry

Crabtree church today By Jeff Burgess

For over 75 years the ministry of the Crabtree Church has been getting people in touch with Jesus while showing and demonstrating the path of service. Scriptural based guidance is offered in services on Sunday and Wednesday. Numerous regular and special events are scheduled year round to benefit the community as well as for fellowship and fun. The congregation is of mixed ages with many children due to the church’s historical emphasis on children’s ministry. This is a country church that’s country friendly and warmly greets newcomers. Services, classes, regular and special events are open to all seekers. There are plenty of good role models to be found here and plenty of opportunities for service. So come on in and set a spell. If you decide to stay awhile you’ll notice a strong sense of family with kids to the fourth and fifth generation present. This common thread of the importance of family goes back to before the church was built. Early settlers to this area brought their Bibles and used them with their families and friends, but organized worship didn’t start until 1940 when fresh from Bible college, 40-plus yearold Martha Breckenridge was led to start

Martha Breckenridge believed in keeping a smile for others and a song in your heart. a children’s ministry in the Crabtree area. “Every other week we’d go up the creek, walk 2 or 3 miles to have Sunday school in homes along the creek ... When the creek would get so wide it came up to the doors, we had to wait,” said Martha describing her early days of ministry. Her Spirit-led enthusiasm and creativity drew many to the call. A building was needed as the flock grew. And a location “on the hill” was divinely provided and construction on the new church began. Martha’s untiring enthusiasm and successful children’s ministry helped grow the church into its new present-day facility, a welcoming and living house of worship and large modern community hall, site of numerous community events and legendary potlucks. “Many folks helped us to keep this work going over the years. I couldn’t name all the dear folks who blessed us at just the right time,”

The pavilion was used for numerous and varied events for years before construction of the

The new sanctuary and large community room are expected to accommodate church growth for years to come. Martha said. Her philosophy was to strive to “live a holy life, shun the wrong and do the right and God will make a way for you. Live and let live. Keep a smile for others and a song in your heart and lend a helping hand and you won’t go too far wrong.” Many have said they they saw

and felt in her the loving, caring spirit of Jesus. Maratha’s legacy and mission has been carried forward in the ministries of those who followed: Virgil and Joy Lemings, Amon and Connie Collins, Buddy and Becky Hooper and Dennis and Charlotte Ber-

ry. These people and others have continued sowing the precious seed in people’s hearts by simply loving them and teaching the word of God. This has been the attitude and ministry of this beautiful church family on Crabtree Mountain the past 75 years. So you all are invited to

come on in as friends and see for yourself how it works for you. We think you’ll like us. (Quotes attributed to Martha Breckenridge and other information was taken from the book: “Celebrating Fifty Years of Ministry,” compiled by Ammon Collins, 1991.)

Fishing Report North Arkansas

White River (Bull Shoals Tailwater)

(updated 2-82017) Sportsman’s White River Resort (870-453-2424) said water is clear and beautiful and the level is low. Trout are excellent and really taking to the shad. It’s been a very good week for catching brown trout. The biggest one was 22 pounds. It was also a good week for rainbows, with more than 100 fish caught.

Bass biting well in Northwest Arkansas Largemouth bass and striped bass reports are very good in the lakes of Northwest Arkansas these days. Bailey's Guide Service and Southtown Sporting Goods, both on Beaver Lake, have been touting the striper action of late. Steve Daniels backs that up (see above photo) with the 30-pound striper he hauled out of Beaver Lake last week east of Prairie Creek. Daniels said he was using live bait. Meanwhile, Southtown says the largemouth bass are on the bite as well in the lake, as well as crappie, even though the lake is more than 9 feet below normal conservation pool. Nearby is a hidden gem at this time of year for anglers: SWEPCO Lake near Gentry. Recently, one angler caught a couple of 6-pound largemouth bass and another that was nearly 8 pounds in a re-

port passed along to the Fishing Report. Because its water is used to cool Southwestern Energy Power Company's coalfired plant at Gentry, and therefore warm when released back into the lake, SWEPCO Lake is the only body of water north of Lake Atkins that is stocked by the AGFC with Florida bass fingerlings. Florida-strain largemouth bass look like the native northern largemouth, but they will grow larger at a faster rate. However, they need warmer water than is typical in north Arkansas lakes, and SWEPCO Lake provides that, sometimes ranging 20 degrees higher than, say, Beaver Lake in winter. SWEPCO Lake is a great destination for Arkansas fishing early in the new year when it's too cold elsewhere because of the warmed water; and sure enough,

this January the bass really began biting, according to Jon Stein, an AGFC district fisheries supervisor in Rogers. Florida bass start spawning in January. “You can catch them in shallower water in January and February,” he said. SWEPCO Lake fishing was catchand-release until about 2008, Stein said. The creel limit now is 10, although only one bass may exceed 18 inches. “There are tons of small bass in the population now, but there is also the potential for the really big bass, the 6- or 7-pounder.” SWEPCO Lake is easy to find a few miles west of Gentry, and has one public access point. “It’s real popular at this time of year because you can be catching bass like you’d be fishing in April on most of our lakes,” Stein said.

Norfork Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 547.69 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April – 553.75 msl, April-September – 552.00 msl). (updated 2-82017) Lou Gabric at Hummingbird Hideaway Resort said Norfork Lake water level is 547.76 and holding fairly stable. The surface water temperature Tuesday morning was 4849 degrees, which is 4 - 5 degrees warmer than normal. The main lake is clearing and the creeks and coves are still stained, but the water seems like it’s starting to clear. The weather this winter has been amazing with only a few cool days. At 7 a.m. Tuesday, when Lou left his Norfork Lake dock, the air temperature was already in the upper 50s. Early spring-like weath-

er. Lou said he started checking his normal winter spots and found some stripers in 90 feet of water suspended 40-50 feet down close to the U.S. Highway 62 bridge. He was vertical jigging with a spoon and hooked into two fish, but both came off after a short run. His second spot was in Float Creek. Lou marked a few fish lying on the bottom at 70 feet, but they would not take his spoon. He decided to try an area he normally fishes in March heading up toward the Fouts area. Lou was finding fish in 55 feet of water, but again he could not get them to hit his spoon. He then headed into shallower water and found some schooling whites, hybrids and scattered largemouth bass in 2540 feet of water. Bait was scattered and the fish were feeding. Lou says he guesses the warmer-than-normal water temperature is moving the bait fish into shallower water and the fish are following. Unless the weather turns cold for an extended period of time, we should have an early spring bite. Lou said he will try out the night bite sometime this week to see if they can get a good February bite like they had several years ago. The water temperature is almost perfect for the after dark bite throwing a suspending jerk bait.

North Fork River (Norfork Tailwater)

(updated 2-82017) The most productive flies have been small midge patterns (sizes 18, 20, 22) like ruby midges, root beer midges, zebra midges (black or red with silver wire and silver bead) and soft hackles (sizes 14, 16) like the Green Butt. Egg patterns have also been productive. Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective. Try a small bead headed nymph (zebra midge, copper John or pheasant tail) suspended 18 inches below a brightly colored San Juan worm (hot fluorescent pink or cerise size 10). There have been reliable hatches of small midges (try a size 24 Adams parachute) and caddis (try a size 18 elk hair caddis). The fishing is better in the morning.

Buffalo National River

(updated 2-82017) Berry Brothers Guide Service (870453-2424) said the Buffalo is navigable. With cold weather, the smallmouths are much less active. Berry’s favorite fly is a Clouser minnow. Carefully check the water level before entering the Buffalo River. There are no dams, it has large drainages and is prone to flooding during and following any rain event. The water can rise very quickly.
